Finally spring is upon us – and what a month we have to look forward to. Mother’s Day is a real highlight. I believe that it is so important to enjoy as much time as possible with your mother, after all it is those memories which will remain with you throughout life and sustain you. I know I'm planning to spoil mine with a trip away. With the weather improving too, there are so many wonderful places to explore incorporating activities whilst enjoying the diversity of our county. Among my favourite places when the sun shines are the likes of Howletts and Port Lympne – glorious countryside, magnificent views with some of the most incredible wildlife. Certainly as the days become longer and lighter, we all feel so much more invigorated. With the blooming of natures wonderful flowers the season is something to truly behold. I was gifted a marvellous book by the remarkable Jeff Leatham, artistic director of the Four Seasons Hotel George V in Paris. His work is truly magnificent, with amazing displays of floral art. I whole heartedly recommend it to you. If your thoughts extend a little further, there's also the Holiday and Leisure Show in Dover later this month – more of which can be found inside. Talking of mothers, we feature a remarkable mum this edition - the multi award-winning Meryl Streep. So plenty to look forward to in this issue and the whole month. I hope you all enjoy it. And just before I go, I would like to say a very big thank you to our growing list of subscribers – you make it all worthwhile.
See you next month!

She has acted, sung and danced her way through a remarkable career... and it’s showing no signs of slowing just yet... We take a special look at Meryl Streep the undisputed Queen of Hollywood here are few actresses more assured of legendary status than Meryl Streep. Because as she approaches the 40th anniversary of securing roles in major Hollywood movies, she has a portfolio second to none. A clutch of Academy Awards – three at the time of writing - form the centre piece of shelf upon shelf of gongs recognising her achievements, while the list of her movies reads like Hollywood’s finest moments. From the emotional clout of the likes of Kramer vs Kramer and her range of accomplishments are significant Deer Hunter to The French Lieutenant’s Woman, Out of Africa and Postcards From the Edge. By the time you’ve sprinkled in performances such as The Devil Wears Prada. Mamma Mia, the Iron Lady (where she portrayed none other than Margaret Thatcher) and She Devil, you have an actress as versatile as she is successful.
T
What’s more, she still has box office clout after appearing in Disney’s Into the Woods, released recently, and which saw the stars – which included James Corden, Emily Blunt and Chris Pine – shooting scenes within the grounds of Dover Castle. Her next film may be the least predictable role for her yet. In Ricki and the Flash, she portrays a hard-rocking singer and guitarist who gave up everything in her pursuit for fame and fortune, but now returns to repair her family life. It’s not the role you necessarily expect of a 65-year-old. But then the film does give her the opportunity to star opposite her real-life daughter – Mamie Gummer. Now 31, it is not the first time they have shared screen time. When Mamie was just 20 months old she appeared with her mother in the comedy drama Heartburn. The movie also starred Jack Nicholson. a
mmm 11
12 mmm
Since that early appearance, Mamie – who is best known in the US for her portrayal of Emily Owens MD – has grown into a woman who bears more than a little passing resemblance to her mother. Mamie, born Mary, is one of four children produced by the actress and her husband Don Gummer - a sculptor, the couple have been married since 1978. But it was a relationship born out of tragedy. Streep’s first love had been the actor John Cazale. He had a remarkable talent – appearing in five major motion pictures all of which received an Oscar nomination for best picture. He appeared in the likes of the Godfather movies, the classic Dog Day Afternoon and the Deer Hunter. He and Meryl had met before they appeared together in the Robert De Niro classic and they had lived together for some three years. But, before shooting of the Deer Hunter had begun, he was diagnosed with terminal lung cancer. Shooting on the movie was organised to ensure both his and Streep’s scenes were completed first. He would never live to see its release, dying in March 1978. He was just 42. Speaking of those terrible final months, his close friend Al Pacino remarked of his relationship with Meryl: “I’ve hardly ever seen a person so devoted to someone who is falling away like John was. To see her in that act of love for this man was overwhelming. “She was just mad for him and he was mad for her and they found each other.” His passing left a terrible scar on Streep’s heart. Speaking years later she reflected: “I didn’t get over it. I don’t want to get over it. No matter what you do, the pain is always there in some recess of your mind, and it affects everything that happens afterwards. “I think you can assimilate the pain and go on without making an obsession of it. a
mmm 13
14 mmm
“He wasn’t like anybody else, he wasn’t like anybody I had ever met, it was the specificity of him and his humanity and his curiosity about people, his compassion.” Some six months after his death she married Gummer. “I haven’t got over John’s death,” she said at the time, “but I have got to go on living.” A friend of her brother, he had offered her the use of his flat following John’s death – to allow her to escape from the apartment they had shared. Don was off travelling at the time. But upon his return, the pair grew close before a romance blossomed. And the pair have been happy ever since, with children Henry, Mamie, Grace and Lousia, growing up in a sprawling million pound private estate in Connecticut, before upgrading to a £2.5m mansion in Los Angeles. Fuelled by the relentless success Streep has enjoyed as an actress. Perhaps in keeping with their desire to maintain as normal a life as possible, the family moved back to Connecticut by the mid 1990’s. Although she herself admits she is amazed her box office clout has continued for so long. She explained: “When I was 38 I remember saying to Don ‘well it’s over now’. But then we kicked the can down the road a little further. “I’ve been given great, weird, interesting parts well past my ‘sell by’ date. “I can’t remember the last time I really worried about being appealing. “It’s freeing as an actress, but whether a director likes it or not is a different thing.” Certainly, she is perhaps a little unusual for a leading actress to enjoy such an extended career in a world so often referred to as a young person’s game. Yet she continues to occupy a very special place in the hearts of the movie-watching world.
mmm 15
She is, perhaps, a link to our own past, but we continue to be bewitched by her performances. And, it would appear, she has no intention of slowing down any time soon. She was back in Kent last year to shoot scenes at the Historic Dockyard in Chatham for Suffragette. In it, she portrays feminist icon Emmeline Pankhurst. Not to mention Ricki and the Flash and a biopic of the opera singer Florence Foster, titled ‘Florence’. What’s more, she has used her profile to considerable benefit too. She has donated more than £1m – including the entire $1m fee for her role in The Iron Lady – to the National Women’s History Museum in the US. She’s donated money to set up scholarships at a US university and supported projects to spread female empowerment and saving theatres too. It’s hard not to be impressed. Hard not to accept that in 100 years people will still be speaking of her remarkable talents. mmm

Mother’s Day Flowers
F
lowers speak a thousand languages. They are the best way of expressing your feelings and emotions for your mum on her special occasion. Although carnations are the traditional Mother’s Day flowers, the choice should depend on what your mother loves. So, be it a mixed bouquet, lilies, daffodils, roses, tulips irises or any other flower, the main thing is making your mother happy. Flowers are the best way to do so. Whether she is a working mother or a stay at home mum, these beautiful gifts are sure to make her day. Flowers can also serve as an add on gift with any other Mother’s Day gift idea.
Clothes for the Well Dressed Lady
Y
our mother is someone who loves dressing up on occasions and even without them. She is probably the person whom you consult whenever you have to take decisions regarding the latest in fashion and the trends in clothes.
Maybe she is just particularly well turned out and concerned about making the right impression. Simply said, the choice of a Mother’s Day present for her is wha\tever makes her feel attractive. Gift her items which might range from a new dress, to work out clothes, from formals to informals and from traditional ethnic wear to western wear.
A day to Remember
I
f your mother is working round the clock, be it home or office or someplace else, she deserves a day or more off for herself. Make sure that you plan the day or days so that it becomes the best gift possible for her. From taking over all or most of her responsibilities or sharing them with someone, to pampering her with a visit to the spa, shopping, dinner or movies. You can even take this a step further and organise a trip for her, a getaway for her with whoever she chooses to go with.

This way you can give her multiple gifts that also suit her nature and her sense of style. Ragdale Hall spa gift set £25.00 Marks and Spencers
Art Work or Collectables
I
f her busy schedule makes it difficult for your mum to appreciate the small pleasures in life, like collecting art or music or decorating and designing, a gift of art or other collectables can be and should on your list of gift ideas.
Accessories
Y
our mother is someone who balances both work and household duties with ease. She is a multi-tasker and someone who values organisation. So, a gift that suits her lifestyle and attitude might be accessories. On Mother’s Day you can compliment her with gifts that flatter her and are also useful to her. Stylish Mother’s Day accessories like watches, scarves, handbags, footwear and hats are all good choices for a gift that embodies all these qualities.

DAVID TENNANT From Doctor to detective The nation’s love affair with David Tennant
erhaps just once in a generation you get an actor whose versatility, and ability to combine the mainstream and the niche elevates him to a level of popularity which genuinely appeals to all ages and tastes. David Tennant is surely that man today. From tapping into the global stardom afforded by portraying the science-fiction hero Doctor Who, to the nitty gritty of hard-hitting drama Broadchurch, and from the big screen phenomenon of Harry Potter (where he portrayed Barty Crouch Jr. in the Goblet of Fire), to regular appearances with the Royal Shakespeare Company. It would be easy to assume everything he touches turns to gold – something reflected as he picked up a ‘special recognition’ award at the National Television Awards earlier this year. Not bad for someone, who at 43, still has plenty yet to give. He’s no stranger to Kent either. In October 2011 he spent several weeks in Margate, filming the True Love drama – a challenging, often improvised, tale which saw him spend time in the offices of Thanet District Council, where his character worked, and shooting along the town’s coastline. It’s certainly a long way from his humble beginnings in Scotland where he grew up in Renfrewshire.
P
Born David McDonald in April 1971, his father was the Very Reverend Dr. Alexander McDonald, a local Church of Scotland minister and moderator of the Church’s General Assembly. He has said he was first bitten by the acting bug at the tender age of three when, ironically, he became a big fan of Doctor Who. “I was always going to act,” he says, “literally ever since I was tiny. “I remember a conversation with my parents about who the people on the TV were, and learning they were actors and they acted out this story and just thinking that was the most fantastic notion, and that’s what I want to do. “I wanted to become an actor after being obsessed with Tom Baker, the fourth Doctor Who, in the 1970s. His was the definitive performance of all time in anything.” His talents were apparent early too. At 11, he was spotted by the actress Edith MacArthur who told his parents he had what it took to become a successful stage actor. Appearing in drama productions in school, he attended weekend classes at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama – passing an audition to join it, full-time, at 16.
It was here he changed his name – pinching the surname of Pet Shop Boys’ frontman Neil Tennant – to avoid a clash with another actor called David McDonald already on the books of actor’s union Equity. Not that his parents were completely convinced a career treading the boards was best for him. Speaking after his son collected the National Television Award in January, his father admitted: “David’s mum and I tried to persuade him to do something in life that would be more permanent than acting, that would give him a longer career. “The rector of his school wanted him to go to university to study English as he is a very good writer. “But he was really keen to
be an actor and he was accepted by the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama the first time he applied.” Now 77, he says he is delighted at his son’s career and that he is “a proud father”. And so he should be. Tennant is charming and a solid inspiration to youngsters keen to follow in his footsteps. He conducts himself well, and if he has a rampant ego, he certainly disguises it well. Asked how he feels about being a pin-up, he dismisses the idea. “It’s not to do with you, is it,” he says, “it’s to do with characters you play, it’s not to do with who you are, or even what you look like. “I still find it ridiculous when I read a script that says something like ‘good looking’ or ‘fanciable’. I just think, ‘that’s not my part’ because when I was young, I always played the weird, geeky outsiders.” But pin-up he most certainly is. To many he remains the definitive Doctor Who – quirky, fun, deep – and had a wonderful chemistry with his travelling companion Billie Piper; a sexual tension at times which added considerably to the series’ success. He had secured his first professional acting roles prior to even leaving school, appearing in a public information film when just 16. An early TV role saw him portray Davina – a transsexual barmaid in the Scottish comedy Rab C Nesbitt. While filming Takin’ Over the Asylum in 1994, he met the actress Arabella Weir. It would become a life-long friendship. He moved to London with her and became her lodger for five years. He is now godfather to her child. During that time he became an established force on the stage, performing some of the classics with the Royal Shakespeare Company.
The Noughties saw him emerge more and more onto our TV screens, and when he appeared in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire he was becoming a familiar face, albeit often in smaller roles. That, however, would all change when destiny came calling. After the successful revival of Doctor Who with Christopher Eccleston, when he announced he was to quit, Tennant was lined up as the replacement. It didn’t take long from the 2005 debut to become an established fan favourite. He would retain the role until finally bowing out in his final episode, broadcast on January 1st, 2010. While many feared he would forever be tarred with the Time Lord’s brush, he quickly put those fears to one side with a string of diverse roles. From a drama on the obscenity court case over the controversial Lady Chatterley’s Lover book, to Single Father, about the struggles of one man trying to raise five children following the death of his partner, the work never dried up. Especially with his theatre work continuing. ITV drama Broadchurch would deliver his next major success – seeing him team up with Olivia Colman in a crime drama which gripped the nation. His stardom though has made him closely guard his private life. He once said: “Relationships are hard enough with the people you’re having them with, let alone talking about them in public.” Remarkably, his marriage in 2011 to Georgia Moffett created a Doctor Who fan’s dream. Georgia is the daughter of actor Peter Davison – himself a former Doctor. They have two children together, while Tennant is also step-father to Georgia’s child from a previous relationship. Tennant, it seems, has it all and there seems to be no let up in demand for him on screen or stage. mmm

Paloma’s pitch perfect assault on the senses Ahead of a major open-air show in Kent this summer, we look at Paloma Faith’s slow but steady rise to national treasure status
lowly but surely Paloma Faith is becoming one of the UK’s most treasured, and popular, recording artists. She’s not had number ones by the bucketload, or played the biggest arenas or stadiums...yet. But that will all change this month when she embarks on her most ambitious tour to date. Her UK jaunt will take in the classic big venues such as the O2 in London and NIA in Birmingham. Just last November, she was performing at the likes of Folkestone’s Leas Cliff Hall. It is a sign of her growing love affair with the British public. And this summer she will headline an outdoor show at the Bedgebury Pinetum in Goudhurst, near Tunbridge Wells. Perhaps unsurprisingly, her performance on June 20th has already sold out months in advance. It is, however, of little surprise that she is making such an impression. Not only is she a hugely talented singer, with a distinct style which straddles styles and eras, but she is almost a walking work of art. Her fashions define her – normally, bright, colourful, striking. And if that was not enough, her frequent appearances on chat and panel shows have revealed a dazzling personality too. After growing her fan base with her first two albums – Do You Want The Truth Or Something Beautiful and Fall To Grace – she then knocked them dead with last year’s A Perfect Contradiction, which spawned the hit Only Love Can Hurt Like This and the Pharrell Williams produced Can’t Rely On You. Little wonder, then, she’s proving such a big hit. Not that she’s unused to being in the spotlight. a

“
if you decide to change something, at the beginning you have to force it, but eventually it just becomes instinctive. If you’ve done It enough tImes It becomes you
”
Before she hit the big time, she dabbled in various careers such as a magician’s assistant, a life model and even a ghost on a theme park ride. “My style has always been the same even before I was famous,” she explains. “I think I’ve always been a bit of a show-off or attention seeker. I think I like being observed. “Even before I started singing, I would often perform some how – even if I wasn’t speaking. I just enjoyed being watched. “I think all extroverts are closet introverts, so of course I want to hide and I think there are two very different versions of myself that are the performer and the private version. “Sometimes I wake up and I can’t be the performer and I am the private person and I want to hide. But I think when I have to perform on those days I just focus on the performance. I never ever don’t feel like performing.” Her desire to perform is deep rooted. Born in Hackney in 1981 (she initially claimed she was born in 1984 as she feared her age may prevent her from being signed by a record label), her father was Spanish and mother English. They separated when she was just young and raised by her mother in Stoke Newington. Her mother introduced her to dance and she attended regular ballet classes. She explains: “My parents split up when I was two. Both were from Norfolk, which is where they met. I had a good relationship with my dad when I was small, as I would see him regularly at weekends and go and stay with him in Spain in the holidays. “But my mother is a remarkable woman. She had wanted children for 10 years before I was born – and she was 36 when I arrived. So she desperately wanted me, and as a single parent our bond was only ever strengthened.
“I get my dark sense of humour from my father. My mother brought me up to be very well behaved and with quite strong feminist values. I was aware, though, as a child how hard she had to work to bring me up and I didn’t like to be naughty or upset her. “I think now I am kind of rebelling and letting that side of my character out. She always says that I should mention that I was brought up on Jungian principles – she read a lot of books about psychology. “What she taught me is that if you decide to change something, at the beginning you have to force it, but eventually it just becomes instinctive. If you’ve done it enough times it becomes you.”

After completing her A-levels, she headed to the Northern School of Contemporary Dance to study contemporary dance before going on to study an MA in theatre directing. Her studies bankrolled by those unusual jobs which also included working as a sales assistant at lingerie store Agent Provocateur and as a singer in a burlesque cabaret. She was given a foot up on the road to success when a local producer tipped off her future management team that she was worth keeping a close eye on. As her management team started fine-tuning her, she started performing in a band called Paloma and the Penetrators but a special showcase for Epic Records ended badly when she
stormed off after the talent scout refused to stop sending text messages during her performance. But Epic kept close tabs on here and eventually offered her the deal she was after. Her debut single was released in the summer of 2009 and made the top 20 while her first album in the September performed in a similar manner on the long player charts. But it was a strong start. She would become something of a slow burner – her singles gathering pace, and her TV and stage appearances acting as a snowball...slowly gathering pace until, finally, we reach the avalanche we’re at now. a
Good news for those who have already secured tickets for this summer’s Kent show – or her other big shows – is that this tour is shaping up to be her most theatrical yet. And you can’t imagine Paloma delivering any less than an experience. Like all the very best performers, she sees what she does as an art – from the designs, fashions and hair colour, it is all designed to deliver a certain impression. For Paloma, that impression is likely to be a glorious explosion of influences and, most importantly, entertainment for all those that witness it. Paloma Faith performs at Bedgebury as part of the Forest Live shows on June 20th. Tickets are sold out. mmm

NEOLITHIC AYLESFORD
Kits Coty
In 1972 a blockbuster film hit the cinema screens. ‘2001-A Space Odyssey’ attempted to tell the story of human evolution through the discovery of several large black monoliths on earth, the moon and Jupiter. Here on our own planet the village of Aylesford and the entire Medway Valley is reminiscent of such large monolithic type discoveries, though these are of the Neolithic period and are just rock. Robin J Brooks put on his hiking boots and climbed to the highest point of the Medway Valley to find out more... ook up the word Megalith in any English dictionary and it will tell you the word means ‘a large stone that denotes a prehistoric monument’. Add the work Neolithic and we read ‘it is the latest division of the Stone Age dating from 4000 to 2400 BC’. It is the combination of the two that strangely we find in the little village of Aylesford in Kent. A village and civil parish four miles NW of Maidstone, Aylesford today covers more than seven square miles with a population of over 10,000. Classed as a medieval village, there has been Neolithic activity in the area since the fifth millennium BCE. Recently archaeologists have discovered bronze-age swords, whilst a Roman villa was discovered at nearby Eccles. It is recorded that before this, a battle of Aylesford took place between the Germanic Hengist and the Welsh Vortigern Horsa and later Alfred the Great defeated the Danes. Following the Battle of Hastings in
L
1066, the manor of Aylesford was owned by William the Conqueror. Many of the buildings in the village date back to the Norman invasion but it’s the Neolithic monuments that continue to fascinate archaeologists and the public alike. The Neolithic period began in the 5th millennium BCE, the period that humans began to build monumental structures on the landscape. These were representative of graves or tombs which contained either members of one family or members of several families. In Aylesford we have a fine example of a chambered long narrow grave in ‘Kits Coty House’ or just ‘Kits Coty’. Sitting prominently on a hill overlooking the Medway Valley, the site consists of three very large and heavy rocks formulated in the shape of a rock temple. It also marks the position of several long barrows or trenches dug to accommodate the bodies. Reaching to a height of three metres and although damaged by ploughing, the entrance to the tomb survives. a
In 1722, the site was sketched by William Stukeley which showed the burial site, which he called the ‘grave’. Other notable figures have visited Kits Coty House. Samuel Pepys mentioned it in his diaries saying: “Three great stones standing upright and a great round one lying on them, of great bigness, although not so big as those on Salisbury Plain. (Stonehenge) But certainly it is a thing of great antiquity, and I am mightily glad to see it”. The site was further visited in 1854 by Thomas Wright who found evidence of pottery from the Neolithic period. The modern author, George Orwell, when visiting it in 1938 called the structure ‘a druidical altar’ due to the fact that the structure reminded him of a mini Stonehenge. It does in fact attract a branch of Druidism at certain times of the year most importantly during the summer solstice.
Stonehenge
Just a little way further down the hill is another collection of strategically placed rocks known as ‘Little Kits Coty’. Also known as the ‘countless stones’ today it is seen as a chaotic pile of stones, although it represents another early form of burial chambers. In 1989 it was the subject of an archaeological evaluation which had hoped to find further evidence of a burial ditch. This was not forthcoming although signs of iron age activity were found nearby.
There is no doubt that Aylesford and the Bluebell Hill area are of great historical and archaeological interest. Like the monoliths in the fictional film, ‘2001-A Space Odyssey’, a film that provoked thought to many people about human existence, the Neolithic Megaliths will continue to do the same, but unlike the film, will still be around thousands of years from now. Essential Tips for Designing your Kitchen mmm delves into kitchen design, with helpful tips on how should you take each step...
T
he art of designing a good kitchen isn’t so much to do with the way it looks but the way it functions. And the first step is finding the layout that best suits the space, as it is this that allows the sink, appliances and storage all to be placed in a way that makes the kitchen both easy and a pleasure to use.
mmm 69
How to approach kitchen design
Kitchens are really the soul of the house and are for more than just cooking but also for congregating, so they need to be put in the context of the home’s public spaces or the adjacent spaces. In a lot of older houses, the kitchen tends to be isolated and often small. Today, people want a kitchen that incorporates both a workspace and a casual space for dining or even working.
What people look for in a kitchen
To create a practical large kitchen it’s important to zone your spaces well. Family and guests tend to congregate to islands, so locating the hob and prep sink to the island will create a kitchen that is friendly to guests. Refrigeration and ovens are important to have close by to whoever is cooking or prepping at the island, but remember that sometimes there may be more than one user in the kitchen at a time - for this reason two sinks are really useful. People want an efficient work space, always wanting storage, and, even if they don’t immediately realize it, they want some basic parameters to separate the wine-drinking guests from the action in the kitchen. a
Storage Solutions
Retrofit your kitchen; helpful products that can be installed into your existing kitchen, without having to start from scratch. Make life easier on yourself. If you have a smaller kitchen then think about adding shelves or rails to create space. Lacking in kitchen cupboards doesn’t have to mean limited storage space. Putting up open shelves can not only help you utilise empty wall space, it can also become a design feature too. Store your food in pretty jars, add a few baskets, or put your favourite crockery on display. Adding ornaments, picture frames or plants will make your kitchen really homely. Looking for something at the back of a cabinet is not a fun task. Organise your jars, bottles and containers with pull out storage, which allows you to see everything at a glance. For the tricky corner units, install a shelving unit or carousel, depending on your preferences and the shape of the base unit.

Desirable lighting elements in a kitchen
Lighting is important in any room of the house, but is especially so in the kitchen, which is often used for many different functions. Whether you want to set the mood for some intimate dining, illuminate the space for some work at the kitchen table or shine a bright light on food preparation areas, flexibility is key to your lighting options. This means working different lighting styles into the heart of your design. Lighting should be one of the first things you consider when planning your kitchen, because it may affect the style of kitchen
units and worktops that you choose. Light is absorbed by textured, soft surfaces and reflected by harder, glossy ones. So if you want to make a room feel bigger you should choose materials that will reflect light around the room. Also, no matter how effective artificial light is, most people prefer the way natural light makes their home look and feel. You should therefore take a look at your windows and try and maximise the natural light by using reflective surfaces in the places where it rests, and adding more artificial lighting options to those areas in shade. So before you start ordering those cabinets and creating your bespoke worktop, have a look through our guide to presenting your kitchen in the best possible light.
Good piece of advice for someone designing a kitchen
There’s no ideal kitchen shape, whether it’s a galley, U or L-shaped, plan for the sink, fridge and cooktop to form a triangle, with no more than six feet between each for ease of movement. There’s no such thing as too much counter space. Choose a surface that’s easy to work on and care for, but keep in mind that grout between tiles is hard to maintain and that stainless steel will scratch very easily. Don’t reuse appliances or items from the old kitchen. It may seem as if you’re saving money, but an old appliance will stick out like a sore thumb in a new environment. The biggest mistake people make at the planning stage is not allowing for enough storage, use every nook and cranny. Put overhead cabinets right up to the ceiling, rather than leaving a gap on top that collects dust. Make your kitchen as safe and family-friendly as possible by planning for good visibility to the backyard and indoor play areas from the cooking area. Don’t forget to plan for garbage and recycling bins. Consider whether you want built-in bins cleverly disguised behind a cabinet door, or a sleek, stainless-steel garbage container that’s positioned out of the way.

‘Questeds’ lovely detached 1950’s hoMe Property - ‘Questeds’ Address - Canterbury Road, Westgate-on-Sea Bedrooms - Seven Bathrooms - Four Price - £899,950 ‘Questeds’ ‘Questeds’ is an attractive detached listed period home, standing on a large plot of just under two acres. The original house dates back to the mid 1500’s with later additions in the 1800’s. The property is beautifully presented by the current owners and provides generous family living accommodation having three reception rooms and six - seven bedrooms depending on your requirements. The heart of the house is the stunning kitchen/diner with a vaulted beamed ceiling and comprehensive range of cupboards with quartz worktop and a large central island/breakfast bar with glass worktops. The kitchen also offers integrated appliances including:- induction hob, stoves oven, wine cooler, microwave and coffee machine.
There are many appealing features including stone floors, beamed ceilings, sash windows and attractive fireplaces, mixed with modern contemporary bathrooms and shower room including a steam room. ‘Questeds’ is accessed via a long driveway from Canterbury Road. The main garden is laid mainly to lawn with a variety of plants and mature trees and with a large paved terrace to the side with raised decked area. There is also a 24’ 2” x 19’ 5” double garage. ‘Questeds’ offers a unique opportunity to acquire an imposing home close to the town centre, with its variety of shops, golf course and the seafront. Westgate train station provides connecting services to London with the high speed link running direct from Ramsgate to London St. Pancras in approximately 75 minutes. The nearby A299 Thanet Way provides good access to the motorway network.
mmm 79
The dining room dates back to around 1550 but the house was completed sometime around the 1800s. Questeds is now an exquisite, seven-bedroomed family home. The pillars by the entrance give it a grand feeling, with four large bay windows at the front, providing natural light and great views over the front garden and forest. The back has a completely different brick style, giving more of a country cottage feel. Inside, with much of the original flagstones, the entrance hall opens up to the main three reception rooms, including the original dining room. A corridor then opens up into the kitchen, with its original beams and exposed brick wall, with a log burner and doors to the front and back garden. This is the owners favourite room, where much time is spent during all of the seasons. It’s bright and fresh in the summer and cosy in the winter and Christmas, with the log burner and other open fires going.
The house, especially the kitchen with the adjoining front and back patios, lends itself to entertaining. The current owners have enjoyed many parties over the years, including a 40th with a marquee at the back and a 16th around the large spa at the front. Westgate is lovely, with its cinema, cafes and beaches, as well as the railway just a stone’s throw from the back garden. Spring gardening
The end of winter is finally upon us, which means it’s time to prepare your garden ready for the start of the new season. ake note of tree limbs that should be removed or cabled, especially those that overhang structures. Hire an arborist to maintain large trees. Cut down last year’s perennial foliage, and toss it into the compost pile. Rake mulch from beds planted with bulbs before foliage appears, and refresh mulch in other planting areas after soil warms. Check fences, steps, and pathways for disrepair caused by freezing and thawing. Order Tools and Plants Tune up tools so everything is ready when things start growing. Make note of what is missing, and order tools for the new growing season. Choose new plants for the garden. Order perennials, trees, and shrubs for spring planting.
M
Get Ready to Mow Send the mower and leaf blower for servicing, or if you have the right tools, sharpen the mower blades yourself. Refill your mower with oil, install fresh spark plugs, and lubricate moving parts if necessary. Clear the lawn of winter debris, and look for areas that need reseeding before mowing.
82 mmm
Prune Trees and Shrubs Remove dead, damaged, and diseased branches from woody plants. Thin and trim summer-blooming shrubs such as butterfly bush, hydrangea, and most roses, except for oldfashioned once bloomers. Prune cold-damaged wood after plants resume spring growth. Prune spring-blooming shrubs and trees after flowering. Take a Soil Test Check soil pH with a home soil- test kit, taking several samples from different planting areas for an accurate reading. Enrich soil as necessary: Add dolomitic lime to raise the pH or elemental sulfur to lower the pH. Prepare New Beds Clear the planting area as soon as soil can be worked, removing sod or weeds and debris. Spread a 4-inch layer of compost or well-rotted manure and any amendments over soil, and cultivate it to a depth of 10 to 12 inches with a spading fork. Fertilize Apply balanced fertilizer, fish emulsion, or other soil amendments recommended by soil-test results around trees and shrubs when new growth appears. Spread high-acid fertilizer and pine-needle mulch around acid-loving shrubs like azaleas and camellias. Begin fertilizing perennials when active growth resumes. Plant Plant bare-root trees, shrubs, and perennials such as hostas and daylilies by early spring. Choose a cool, cloudy day if possible. Transplant container-grown plants anytime during the growing season except midsummer; be sure to water them thoroughly. Sow seeds of cool-season flowers like sweet peas, poppies, calendula, also vegetables such as lettuce, parsley, and spinach.
What to plant in March...
• Plant gladioli and acidantheras, thin the roots of herbaceous perennials. Sow hardy annuals in situ and prick off those sown earlier. • Prune newly planted bush fruits. If the weather is dry then water the newly planted fruits and spray against pests and diseases (do not spray if the trees are in full flower). Use nets to protect flowers on fruit trees from frost.
mmm 83
Start a Compost Pile Start a compost pile, or use a compost bin, if you don’t have one already. Begin by collecting plant debris and leaves raked up from the garden. Chop these up first to speed decomposition. Add equal amounts of “brown” (carbon-rich) materials like dried leaves and straw and “green” (nitrogenrich) materials like grass clippings and weeds, in even layers with water and a compost bioactivator. Turn regularly. Continue adding to the pile throughout the season for rich, homemade compost next spring. Clean Bird Feeders and Baths Disinfect the feeders by scrubbing with weak bleach solution (1/4 cup bleach: 2 gallons warm water). Rinse and dry the feeders thoroughly before refilling them.Scrub birdbaths with bleach solution, then rinse them thoroughly and refill, changing water weekly. Clean birdbaths and feeders regularly throughout the season. mmm

The walk returns for a 4th year to support those facing breast cancer. The walk will take in the striking grounds of Leeds Castle as well as the stunning Kent countryside. This year, there is an option to walk a new shorter five mile route, as well as the 10 mile and 20 mile options. The shorter route will be open to families; children over the age of eight will be able to take part and the age limit for the 10 and 20 mile routes has been lowered to 14, so it’s a day the whole family can enjoy together. This year, approximately 1,300 people living in Kent will receive the devastating news that they have breast cancer, but with your help the charity can continue to offer them vital support.
Lucy Johnston, UK Walks Events Manager for Breast Cancer Care says: “This year we need over 750 participants to join us at the Leeds Castle Ribbonwalk to help achieve our target of over £193,000. Every year nearly 55,000 people are diagnosed with breast cancer in the UK so we really need Kent residents to sign up to take part in 2015!” Participants will be asked to raise £100 in sponsorship to help fund Breast Cancer Care’s specialist services which help people live with, through and beyond breast cancer. It costs just £30 to register to take part and £15 for under 18s, and you will also receive free entry to the venue grounds (with a reduced entry fee for friends and family). There is no minimum sponsorship for under 18’s. Every participant will receive an event pack with details, a pink ribbon to write a personal message on, a Pink Ribbonwalk T-shirt, medal, celebratory hot post-walk meal and a certificate.
bEn fOgLE HELpS LAuncH nETWORK Of nEW gLAmpIng TEnTS Broadcaster and adventurer Ben Fogle took part in the launch of a new network of glamping tents called Ready Camp, at the Caravan, Camping & Motorhome Show at Birmingham’s NEC. The exciting new glamping product is aimed at adventurous young families, and couples who don’t want the hassle of hitching up a tourer, pitching a tent or manoeuvring a motorhome, and is owned and run by The Camping and Caravanning Club.
Ben said: ‘Camping and caravanning holidays are perfect for families that have a healthy spirit of adventure. Adventures can be big or small – you needn’t necessarily cross Antarctica on foot, or the Sahara. There’s nothing more fun or healthy than exploring the natural environment, and camping puts this simple joy within reach of everyone”. The Ready Camp tents can be found on 17 highly acclaimed Camping and Caravanning Club Sites, including Canterbury in Kent, and offer value-for-money holidays close to many of Britain’s most loved tourist spots. The network allows holidaymakers to tour and explore Britain without the added expense of having to purchase their own camping equipment, safe in the knowledge they’re staying with a trusted campsite operator. Stretching from Luss and Scone in Scotland, to Bala in Wales, Sandringham in East England, and Veryan in Cornwall, the campsites have been carefully selected to ensure there are plenty of local activities nearby for all the family to enjoy. The range of Camping and Caravanning Club Sites that offer Ready Camp glamping tents means holidaymakers will be able to tour around the UK and explore the best that Britain has to offer. It’s a great way to experience camping for the first time – and at a fantastic price.

HOuSES SELLIng OuT fAST AT KIngS HILL Following excellent sales in 2014, the success of Help to Buy and the imminent arrival of a third school, new properties at Kings Hill – recently named by the Daily Telegraph as one of the best places to bring up a family - are fast running out and there will be a gap before more are built. “Once our current phase of house building is completed there will be a lull until we start development of the next Kings Hill neighbourhood,” said Susan Davies, Liberty’s estate manager on behalf of Kings Hill New Homes, a marketing forum which includes Kings Hill developer Liberty Property Trust, Kent County Council and house builders developing on site at any one time – currently Bellway Homes, Crest Nicholson and Hillreed Homes. “Whilst we aim to provide an even supply of new homes to the market, we are finalising design and phasing of the planning consent which was granted late last year for a further 635 homes and we will then need to put in new infrastructure before we can invite home builders to start construction.
“Realistically, it will be some months before the next phase of housing will be available. So, apart from the remaining properties in the current development and a small development of top-end apartments which are yet be built, availability is dwindling fast.” Another driver in the excellent sales record at Kings Hill is Help to Buy, but, said Hillreed’s Claire Keulemans: “there are concerns that the scheme could change and not be so widely available after the election so this is a key point in the market for people looking to buy a home at Kings Hill.” Kings Hill is a contemporary garden village where masterplanning developer Liberty Property Trust and Kent County Council are creating a vibrant community where people can have a live/work/play lifestyle. To date Kings Hill has almost 2,750 new homes together with shops and cafes – including Waitrose and Costa Coffee, schools and extensive community, leisure and sports amenities. There are also over 200 businesses in the business park providing some 5,000 jobs on the doorstep. Planning permission has just been granted for a further 635 much needed homes, a new primary school – the third at Kings Hill, an extension to the community centre, additional allotments, trim trails and sports pitches for Kings Hill Sports Park. Land will be gifted for the development of a place of worship. For more info please visit www.kings-hill.com/live

dEcIdEd IT’S TImE TO SELL yOuR HOuSE? HERE’S SOmE TIpS TO HELp yOu It can be daunting to put your house on the market, particularly if you’ve lived in the same home for a long time. As the saying goes, it can be one of the most stressful things you do. We’ve set out some information designed to speed the process and hopefully make it less stressful. Estate agents should know the market and in particular, understand your type of home and the area where you live. Sometimes, it makes sense to contact a couple of agents so that you get the benefit of two view points and estimates of value. • You should be looking for an accurate valuation, not too high that it puts off prospective buyers, but fair to you so that you can get the right price for your home. • Look for an estate agent with a local presence i.e. lots of “sold” boards, look in the local papers and on the online sites such as Rightmove and Onthemarket. • Try to obtain personal recommendations from friends/family who have recently sold their property. • Agree the fee level for the sale. 12-yEAR OLd’S bIRTHdAy bOOST fOR cHARITy Instead of recieving birthday gifts Josh Houry decided to donate his money to Virgin Money Giving - neting £418 for the Rainbow Trust Childrens Charity. Mum Samantha Holland said: “He’s always been a very generous boy and gives his unwanted toys to charity shops – but this was quite extraordinary! It was all his own idea, but we helped him set up the ‘giving’ page so our relatives and friends could donate.” Josh’s father Chris got the ball rolling with a £100 donation and his granddad waded in with a further £50 – the sort of sum he would have spent on a present for Josh. Mrs Holland said: “Like all children, Josh generally gets lots of bits and pieces from our family and his friends – it’s surprising how it all adds up.” A former pupil of the Discovery School at Kings Hill, Kent, big-hearted Josh now attends Sutton Valence School, near Maidstone, where his selfless gesture received a commendation in the school assembly.
If your house requires a “spring clean”, ensure you do this prior to the property being put on the market. Consider the following: • Finish off any DIY jobs that have been left uncompleted. • Consider redecorating, particularly if your home has distinctive colours – magnolia is still the top-selling colour. • De-clutter and organise rooms so prospective buyers can see the full potential of the property. Getting rid of clutter now saves doing it when you actually move. Consider putting larger items into store – self storage is a relatively quick and cheap option. • Make the garden look attractive i.e. colourful plant pots and neatly mowed lawn. Once you’ve instructed a selling agent, you should agree the asking price. Think about the new Stamp Duty fee bands when agreeing the price, your agent will help with this. Agree all the marketing options and approve the brochure. If you’ve looked at brochures for new homes you’ll see the developers cover so much more than just the houses. Give your selling agent as many useful documents and facts about your home as you can. • Gas and electrical certificates. • Building regulation certificates. • Council tax, utility, buildings and contents insurance bills (potential buyers can then estimate the running costs). • Service charge and ground rent bills (for flats). • You may also provide details on local schools and amenities. This will ensure that they have all the information required to sell your property. Once the property is on the market and viewings have been booked in, think about how you would view the property if you were looking to buy: • Avoid strong food odours - don’t cook food which will cause a smell to linger just before the viewing. The smell of freshly-baked bread or fresh coffee though is said to provide a welcoming feel to a home. • Ask friends or family to look after any pets during viewings. • Try and make viewers feel comfortable. Offer them a coffee and ask them if they need any further information about bills or local amenities. As soon as the property is being actively marketed choose and instruct your solicitor. You may want to select a solicitor who is an accredited specialist through the Law Society Conveyancing Quality Scheme (CQS), which requires higher levels of training and procedures to be satisfied. Solicitors complete the conveyancing process for a fixed fee so once agreed, you will know how much it will cost. If you have a mortgage, it’s also important to advise your lender of your plans and check for any penalties for early redemption of your mortgage as this might impact your timings. If also buying a property, you’ll obviously need to sort your finance for the purchase. Your solicitor will then issue client engagement letters and arrange for the standard property information forms fittings and contents forms to be sent out to you prior to an offer being accepted. So, as soon as an offer is accepted, your solicitor can send the legal documentation out to the buyers solicitor without delay – helping to secure the sale. The legal steps can then begin.

Maidstone Parade, 4th July chools, charities and voluntary groups in Maidstone are getting the chance to go ‘Around the World’ as part of plans for this year’s Maidstone Parade. Parade project manager Barbara Dunford said: “This is the chance for schools and voluntary groups to get involved – and show their creative flair!” Groups will get financial assistance with their costumes - and there will be training and support to help with costume-making – so a chance to learn some new skills too. The ‘Around the World’ theme also gives those involved a fantastic opportunity to create some innovative and colourful costumes. Mrs Dunford said: “With live music and bands pounding the beat, the parade is a chance for participants to – literally – bang the drum for the county town!” The spectacular is part of a programme of events over the summer being organised by the Maidstone Town Team. Details can be found on the Town Team website and facebook page. Sponsors are being sought to help individual participating groups and Mrs Dunford would be delighted to hear from any businesses which would like to sponsor a walking party in the parade. Individual group sponsorship starts from as little as £50. Some 20 groups took part in last year’s parade but this year’s is expected to be even bigger and better. However, with a maximum of 40 groups, it will be a case of first come, first served. Although still six months away, groups who want to take part are now being invited to register their interest by contacting Barbara Dunford on 01622 630584 or email info@kentcommunityevents.co.uk

I see that life if turning on its head and others will be looking at things from a very different angle. Sometimes in life we need to make a stand. Work/Finances: You are going to be the one in control now over your ambitions and things that are going to take you outside of your comfort zone, but they will make you feel energised and in control. You may get frustrated with someone close to you who has been taking you for granted in work/ money matters.
Cancer 22nd June – 23rd July Love/Family: A very needy person who has been draining your energy has led you to realise that you have made some brilliant changes in your own life. You are far more positive now and you can only give energy to people who deserve your attention. Work/Finances: You are going to meet a person who smiles sweetly but has an agenda that isn’t so sweet. I can see mischievous behaviour around you and you will see straight through them and react in a calm but firm manner. You go with your intuition when you meet someone and you want to back away from them and not get involved, this usually means there is something not genuine about them.
Leo 24th July – 23rd Aug Love/Family: A personal meeting with someone new will make you feel a little nervous or shy from this, there will be a choice of whether to meet up again. I can see that this connection doesn’t have to be romantic (although it can be) it can be a friendship or someone who is willing to help you in some way. Work/Finances: A conversation regarding a plan to reroute or move will be around you this month which will lead to an actual move from one location to another for this person. This move will not be just down the road but there is a long distance to it. There will be an exhaustion linked to money temporarily but in the long run there is more money flowing in because of this change.
Virgo 24th Aug – 23rd Sept Love/Family: You have decided that you need to leave the past in the past and move on with your life; you have been thinking far too much about what has been and not enough about the flow of positive thinking in the good relationships around you now. These Relationships can be wonderful with a little more understanding on both sides. Work/Finances: You are finding it difficult to see the serious side in anything linked to work or money this month. You have a person close to you who is bringing out your carefree side and this is good thing. You have been feeling a little insecure over work or financial matters and you can’t do anything about it for the moment apart from to wait and see, so you may as well enjoy yourself until then.
Libra 2th Sept – 23rd Oct Love/Family: You have felt as though someone has held you back at the moment. You need to make some very clear decisions linked to your future plans which will free your life up more. You have stood your ground over something important to you by using your dry sense of humour. You are aware that life is about to take a change in direction in your personal life but this is for the better. Work/Finances: There are words and feelings of triumph and achievement around you at this time and you just can’t believe you’re on the pathway to success. I can see a person who has been very dominant around you and has been boosting you up to achieve bigger and better and this is what you have needed to push yourself forward.
Scorpio 24th Oct – 22nd Nov Love/Family: You are going to find yourself standing at a crossroads in your emotional life and you are trying to picture the outcome of each road and work out which one will make you the happiest. This isn’t a competition but more like a lesson about you. Do you know which outcome will make you the happiest? There are two people standing beside you and you feel responsible for their happiness too. Work/Finances: You have to deal with an emotional eruption in your work/financial life as there is someone close to you who is not being honest with you. You will start to look closer at what they are saying is happening to their money as things aren’t adding up and you just want the truth.
Sagittarius 23rd Nov – 21st Dec Love/Family: You have already looked deeper at yourself and your own actions relating to a recent fall out or misunderstanding. You have had enough of the judgement and you are now going with the flow for an easier life. The lessons that you have had to learn in the past made you not judge one particular person so harshly when you hadn’t realised the whole story. Work/Finances: A nurturing energy is around you at this time, like a mother figure or a very caring person and they are fussing about your wellbeing both financially and emotionally. There is a double sided person close to you who is being very outspoken and making you remember things from the past that you would rather stay in the past.
