elcome to the May edition of mmm Magazine – your refuge from the world of politics, general elections, coalitions and all of those seemingly endless opinion polls! Certainly, if you enjoy your politics, the last few weeks have been absolutely fascinating. But there does come a point when you need to relax and let your mind stray to other things – and that's where we come in. We have a little something for everyone inside this month's edition from fashion to travel, food to beauty and, of course, a healthy helping of celebrity. We take a look at the remarkable career of Daniel Craig – rapidly becoming everyone's favourite James Bond and currently filming the latest 007 movie, Spectre. He is a fiercely private actor, despite his global fame, so look inside as we lift the lid on just what makes him tick. Elsewhere, we dance the foxtrot with Sevenoaks' Anton du Beke. Looking back to the day he first discovered the delights of dancing, to his long spell on the BBC's Strictly Come Dancing; he has been at the forefront of the ballroom revival. Keeping with the talent show theme, we also profile Amanda Holden – the bubbly judge from Britain's Got Talent. She's certainly had a fascinating life full of ups and downs. Find out more inside. I was lucky enough to escape for a break recently – taking my mother away for a wonderful break which will live long in the memory. Getting away from everything – even the pleasure of putting together mmm – does certainly recharge the batteries and I'm really looking forward now to the summer months; as, I'm sure, are you. we take a look at Daniel Craig’s rise to the top

sk most teenage boys what they would like to be when they grow up and the chances are being James Bond, earning a fortune and marrying a famous actress would figure highly on

their list. So little wonder Daniel Craig has become a man envied and respected in equal measure. As the man credited with adding an edge to 007 and delivering, on his last outing as the super spy perhaps Bond’s finest moment yet in Skyfall, he is assured a place in movie history as well as becoming a global pin-up.

In fact it is hard now to recollect the animosity of so many when he was announced as the man to follow in the footsteps of the likes of Sean Connery and Roger Moore. Not that he is any one-trick pony. His portfolio of major movies – certainly assisted by the pulling power of the Bond franchise – is impressive. He’s starred alongside Nicole Kidman in the Golden Compass, Harrison Ford in Cowboys and Aliens, been cast in the war-time drama Defiance, provided his voice to an animated big movie version of a classic Tintin book, and appeared in the English language version of best-selling book The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. a

In addition to that, after shooting psychological thriller Dream House he embarked on a romance with his Academy Award-winning co-star Rachel Weisz. The pair had long been friends. But just six months after they started dating in December 2010, they tied the knot in a private ceremony in New York. In a manner very much in keeping with a couple who like to keep their private life just that, just four guests attended – two of which were the couple’s children from previous relationships – the then 18-year-old Ella, Craig’s daughter, and 5-year-old Henry, Weisz’s son. It was not Craig’s first marriage. In 1992, when he was 24, he married the Scottish actress Fiona Loudon. The marriage would only last two years before they divorced. Ironically, it was the same year he first met Weisz in a theatre production the two young actors were performing in. He would go on to have a seven-year relationship with German actress Heike Makatsch, best known for her roles in Love Actually, Resident Evil and The Book Thief, before embarking on a five-year romance with Satsuki Mitchell.

Weisz, meanwhile, was fresh from a nine-year marriage to the American director Darren Aronofsky. At the time they separated he was working on Black Swan, a movie which would become his best known and secure five Academy Award nominations. They announced their split just weeks before she went public with her new romance with Craig. Since then, they have remained tight-lipped about their relationship – refusing to discuss it in interviews. While Craig is almost equally as reticent to discuss his childhood.

“My background was not well off,” he admits, “and fame and fortune is really quite scary. As a result, there aren’t many people you can talk to for advice on how to deal with that.” Which may go some way towards his silence over what makes him tick. Born in March 1968, his father Timothy was in the Navy, and his mother, Olivia was an art teacher with aspirations to be an actress. When his parents divorced when he young, he followed in his mother’s footsteps. She had been a

offered – but did not take – a place at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Growing up on the Wirral in Liverpool, he quickly became a regular in school plays and by the time he was 16, having failed to excel academically, he set out to seek his fortune in London. There he joined the National Youth Theatre, where he would take part in a number of touring productions. He moved on to the Guidhall School of Music and Drama in 1988, where other class mates included the likes of Ewan McGregor and Rhys Ifans. Before he had even graduated he won a role in the film the Power of One, alongside TV appearances

in the likes of the Young Indiana Jones and Drop the Dead Donkey. Continuing in successful theatre productions, it was in 1996 when he got his big break – a starring role in TV series Our Friends in the North, alongside Christopher Eccleston and his close pal Mark Strong. He would go on to enjoy roles in plenty more big movies, among them the likes of the English Patient, Obsession and Elizabeth. But it was securing the role as James Bond which saw his career reach the stratosphere. First in Casino Royale, then Quantum of Solace and most recently Skyfall. a

“There is no doubt it’s changed things,” he admits. “It might have been different if we didn’t have the success Casino Royale enjoyed. “But I’m sure I get offered more roles now than I used to.” Right now, he’s filming the next 007 instalment – the eagerly anticipated Spectre. Directed again by Skyfall’s Sam Mendes, it will be the twenty-fourth Bond movie and Craig’s fourth. The storyline is being kept a closely guarded secret but filming has already taken place, reprising the criminal organisation that is Spectre. The production crews have been in London, Rome and Mexico for a film which will surely be one of the most anticipated when it is released later this year.

It may just confirm his position as one of Britain’s most admired superstars. And, who knows, finally wrestle that position held by Sean Connery as the world’s favourite Bond. mmm

Southern Steam Sunset Event, Tenterden, 23rd - 25th May oin us for the Southern Steam Sunset Event at Tenterden’s Steam Railway over the late May Bank Holiday. This exciting steam event will celebrate how heritage railways have successfully reopened train lines following the Beeching Report of 1963 which led to steam services in the South ending on 9th July 1967. It also marks 25 years since the reopening of Northiam Station. Now, five decades on from this period, the Kent & East Sussex Railway will recreate scenes reminiscent of the final years of branch line steam travel, featuring visiting locomotive Drummond M7 Class 30053 which will be hauling typical Southern Region green liveried stock. Other locomotives in use will be three of the lines’ resident steam locomotives, USA Class tank locomotive No 65 and two of the famous Terrier locomotives, 32670 built in 1872 and 32678 built in 1878. The Terrier locomotives will work a variety of small trains including a mixed train of passenger and goods vehicles, which historically were a feature of many branch lines. The “modern” diesel taking over the branch line will be represented by Class 03 D2023 hauling a small freight, so typical of the last years of the K&ESR.

During the 1960’s, 30053 worked the push-pull services from East Grinstead to Three Bridges before moving to Bournemouth to work the Swanage line. When steam travel on British Railways Southern Region finally ended, 30053 was sold by British Railways to the Steamtown Museum in Bellows Falls, Vermont in the USA. 30053 was repatriated to the UK in 1987 for restoration and now resides on the Swanage Railway. During the weekend visitors can travel between Tenterden and Bodiam stations. Some train services will also be timetabled to take the journey over a new section of restored railway track between Bodiam and Junction Road. The new track is part of a major reconstruction project which will ultimately extend the current line from Bodiam to Robertsbridge. I more or less knew that I wanted a particular designer therefore I focused on the wedding shops that stocked them and saved myself time and petrol travelling across Kent for my dress. Look at images in magazines and online and also search for images of real brides in dresses that you like the look of. 3. Take the right people with you. You need people around you who are going to give you their honest opinions in a positive way. Some bridal boutiques limit the number of people you can take with you so be sure to ask this when booking. 4. Keep in mind your venue and/or wedding theme. However themes can be adjusted, ultimately go with the dress you love.

5. Enjoy it! If you’re dragging yourself out every weekend trying on every dress in town, never ﬁnding ‘the one’ and hating every second then take a break, go back to the drawing board and discover exactly what you are looking for in a dress. You’ll, hopefully, only have one wedding dress so enjoy the experience, drink Prosecco with your entourage while discussing the pros and cons of each dress you’ve tried and be conﬁdent that whichever dress you choose your husband-to-be will still think you are the most beautiful bride there ever was. hoosing your live wedding music is an important decision that can set the tone for the entire day. Make the right decision, and you’ll add to the atmosphere that you’re looking to create. Make the wrong decision, and you can be sure that your guests will remember it! Now we’ve put together this list of our tips to help you to choose and work with the perfect acts to suit the style of your day.

Appropriate acts for setting and audience There are many different parts of your wedding day that you may want accompanied by live music. Whether its a choir for your ceremony itself, a string quartet for your reception or a party band for the evening entertainment, be sure to choose an act that not only sounds appropriate, but also looks the part. Think about where your wedding day is taking place – are there certain types of acts that may be more suitable than others? Or if you have a predominantly older or predominantly younger guest list, be sure to pick something that will appeal to them. Listen to the bands in advance When it comes to music, written descriptions of a band’s personality or style aren’t enough: you’ll want to see them in action before booking to ensure that they’re right for your big day. Or watch a video of all the acts perform online, ensuring that you can gauge whether they are right for you before you make any enquiries. Clear guidelines on what you do/don’t want Any good wedding act will provide you with a list of the pieces that they play, so that you can decide in advance whether there are any that you definitely do or definitely don’t want played. A good wedding band will advise you as to which tracks work well together as a combination, but they will also happily go through their repertoire with you so that you can select the songs that you’d like to choose. Most bands will also be happy to learn the piece that you choose for your first dance, while some acts will offer to perform a piece or a song that isn’t in their standard repertoire free of charge. However, double check with string ensembles: as these pieces will require more arranging, a non-repertoire piece is likely to incur a fee at around the £25 mark.

Work out whether you need additional equipment Before booking your entertainment, check in advance that they’ll be bringing all of the equipment that they need, or whether they have additional requests – there’s nothing worse than getting to the day of your wedding and finding that something vital is missing.

If your act needs a power supply, check that the venue has this arranged in advance – the same goes for any speakers or other equipment that the venue is providing. By double checking everything in advance, you’ll be sure that this element of your day will run smoothly. Bear in mind also that some venues have sound limiters: make sure you are aware of your venue’s live band policy, because this will not always work with all acts. For instance, a jazz act that was recently requested for an event were told that they weren’t allowed to bring their own speakers to the venue. Finally…make sure your acts are looked after! Certain acts love being part of a good wedding – it’s a happy occasion and they’re pleased that they can bring something to the party and help you and your guests to celebrate. They can only play their part properly, though, if they’re kept fully informed about what you want, the timings of the day, parking information and anything else that you think will help them on the day. Non-alcoholic drinks are a must, to help to keep the act’s members performing at their best – and a hot meal or buffet is also vital, especially if they’ll be playing for a while. Ultimately, the act that you book is there to help you to celebrate your big day in exactly the way you’d like, meaning that communication both in advance and on the day is key.

n October 2013, Amanda Holden made a rare visit to Kent to sign copies of her autobiography – a revealing revelation of a remarkable life. As the fans queued up at the Bluewater complex in a bid to share a few words with the star, the book itself charted a career which has now stretched for nearly 20 years – the majority of which have been at the very top of the show business tree. From TV dramas such as Wild At Heart, West End success in the likes of Shrek The Musical, and, of course, a long spell as one of the judges on the annual TV hit Britain’s Got Talent, have seen Amanda become a household name. But inside the pages of that book, No Holding Back, there were plenty of the stories behind all those headlines she had generated within the pages of the tabloids.

They had hungrily devoured her relationship with the comedian and game show host Les Dennis – the two married in 1995 – Amanda a young rising star of just 24, Les a TV veteran and nearly 20 years her senior. They had revelled in news of her affair with Men Behaving Badly star Neil Morrissey and the subsequent damage and ultimately divorce it caused. But the book also gave her very personal views on tragedy too in her bid to have children – and a disturbing incident when she was assaulted by a famous TV comedian. It occurred shortly after her ﬂing with Morrissey as she and Les Dennis were trying to get back together. “During our ﬁrst tentative weeks at trying again,” she explains, “we went to an event together and on my way back from the loo I was cornered by a famous comedian, who tried to kiss me and put his hands in places they shouldn’t have been. 

“I was scared and tried to push him away, making light of it so he would leave without causing a fuss, but he wasn’t put off. “As I tried to fight him off, I caught sight of our reflection in a mirror. My body went limp, and I just stood there as he groped and nuzzled me, observing myself from afar.” She has never named the man who assaulted her. But that was far from all. After meeting and dating record producer Chris Hughes, they had their first child, a daughter, Lexie, in 2006. But attempts for a second were met with tragedy; suffering one miscarriage in 2010 and a still born child at seven months a year later. Finally, twelve months later, and despite complications which saw her heart stop beating during child birth, she gave birth to her second child; another girl, Hollie. A third, however, appears to have been ruled out. “If I could,” she reflected, “I would have more kids. But I can’t put my family through that again. We’ve spoken about it and how if we’d met earlier then we may have had more, but you end up with the ones you’re meant to have and we’re incredibly happy to have our girls.” But while she admits to a “sad but good life”, her career has certainly been a string of successes.

Now 44, she is a currently host of This Morning standing in for regular co-host Holly Willoughby while she is on maternity leave. The on-screen chemistry with Phillip Schofield ensuring she has proved a hit with viewers. She has also recently signalled her intention of stepping down from the Britain’s Got Talent judging panel that she’s been on for a decade. But, not just yet. For the fourth year in a row she has appeared alongside judges David Walliams, Alesha Dixon and former Dover school boy Simon Cowell. “I think the ratings prove that the show is still working. And I think as a result, it’s a case of if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. “However, I couldn’t do another ten years on the show – I’d be far too old. I think it’s got another two or three years though.” Born in Portsmouth in February 1971, her childhood was far from straight forward. Her father left the family when she was young. “My biological father, Frank, was hardly ever there when I was young,” she remembers. “He was a drinker and craved what he thought was the high life. But he loved booze more than he did us and he abandoned his children. “My mother divorced him on the grounds of his unreasonable behaviour. The court gave him weekend access to me and my sister – but he never bothered to come.” They would be reunited in the early 1990’s – although Amanda admits it was a difficult meeting. “I am not bitter or sad, just disappointed he only came back into my life when I started to become famous and not when I actually needed him. “But I was lucky. I have a dad. Les Collister was my mum’s second husband and I love him dearly. “He and my mum decided that they couldn’t afford any more children, so he sacrificed having children so that he could raise us as his own. a

“I have no room in my life for another father but I’ve decided I’ll keep in touch with Frank on a basic level and on my terms.” Her first appearance before the cameras was, oddly, as a contestant on the game show Blind Date in 1990 when she was just 19. But it was on ITV’s Wild at Heart, in which she starred alongside Stephen Tompkinson, which would elevate her to genuine stardom. “We were all on three-year contracts and I just didn’t renew mine,” she said of the drama which would see her jet out to South Africa to film. “It just got to the point where I couldn’t take Lexi out of the country for six months of the year. It wasn’t really fair on my family or her. “She was a babe in arms in 2006, so I had her on set all the time. But she inherited the noisy gene from her mother and she wasn’t really quiet on set, so we both got told off a lot.” It wouldn’t be a decision she would regret. Regular TV work followed and that wasn’t all. Before filming Wild at Heart, she had been nominated for a Laurence Olivier theatre award for her role in the West End production of Thoroughly Modern Millie. And it was the stage she returned to in 2011 for Shrek The Musical, where she portrayed Princess Fiona to rave reviews. Now, after years of success, she shows little sign of slowing and has some exciting projects in the pipeline. “I’ve got some more hosting jobs coming up. Duck cooked two ways

Asian and British influence combined Method • Turn the oven to 180 degree Celsius. In a tray place the duck leg, fat star anais, half garlic, salt and pepper, then cover with tin foil and place it in the oven for 2 hours. Take the duck leg out of the oven, remove from the fat and let it cool down. • Score the skin of duck breast then marinate by adding 2 tbs rapeseed oil, half garlic clove, half lime juice, salt, pepper and 10ml of soy sauce. Cover with cling film and place it in the fridge. • Remove the duck leg from the bone then shred the duck legs meat into pieces, then add half of the finely chopped chilli and 10ml of soy sauce, soda water and plain flour, stir all added ingredients. Let it rest for 5 minutes. • In a bowl place half of the chopped chilli, finely chopped ginger, half lime juice, 15ml of soy sauce, and 1tbs of rapeseed oil, then mix them together. Add the shredded carrots coriander spring onion, and sliced mango, combine them together and add the sesame seed. Cover with cling film then place in the fridge. • Take the duck breast out of the fridge then fry skin side in a very hot frying pan with a tiny drop of rapeseed oil. Once the skin is golden brown place it on the tray, then finish cooking in the oven for 180 degree Celsius for another 10 to 15 minutes. • In a bowl place the shredded potato add salt and pepper to taste and half of finely chopped shallot mix all the ingredients then place into a medium heat frying pan with a drop of rapeseed oil fry both sides until golden brown. Then cut the rosties into four triangles. • Place 250 ml oil into the frying pan, let it heat up to 170 degree Celsius. Once the oil reaches the right temperature start frying the duck leg by spooning the mixture into the hot cooking oil. This should make 8 duck leg fritter 2 per portion. • For glaze, pour the wine, ginger, shallot, lime, sugar and the rest of the soy sauce, reduce until it reaches a cream like consistency. • Remove the duck breast from the oven and let it rest for another 2 minutes. • To finish place a quarter of the rosti on the plate a top with sliced duck breast, 2 confit duck leg fritter, Asian slaw then drizzle with glaze.

Ingredients 1 duck leg 250 ml cooking oil 250ml duck fat 1 star anais 2 garlic cloves 20 grams plain flour 20 ml soda water Pinch of salt Pinch of pepper 1 medium size red chilli finely chopped 4 duck breast 1 Large potato shredded Half shallot finely chopped 3tbs. rapeseed oil Handful coriander (remove from the stem) 5 grams ginger (finely chopped) 1 mango (skin and stone remove meat sliced into strips) 2 spring onions (chopped) 1 carrot (shredded) Half cucumber sliced or shredded Tsp sesame seed 1 lime 75 ml dry white wine 75ml soy sauce 1/ tbs brown sugar

Method • In a large saucepan, gently fry the shallot and garlic in the oil until soft. • Add the wine and continue to simmer for a few minutes to burn off the alcohol and reduce the liquid slightly. • Stir in the double cream, then add the mussels. Turn up the heat and pop on the lid for 3 to 4 minutes until the mussels open • Discard all unopened shells and stir in the fresh herbs. with fennel sauce Method • Put white wine, fish stock, chopped shallot and thyme in sauce pan, bring to boil until reduced to half, then add double cream, boil on medium heat until the sauce thickens, pass through strainer then add fennel seed and pernod. • Divide monkfish into two portions, wrap bacon around each fillet and put into baking tray with a bit of oil, bake in oven at 240°C for 20-25 minutes. • Once cooked slice and put onto the plates, warm up the sauce and pour on top.

Meet the Sevenoaks star who puts the style

into tV show hit strictly

he 21st century’s reawakened love affair with ballroom dancing – sparked by the phenomenon that is the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing, has reignited many a career. But in addition to allowing the nation the opportunity of watching the likes of Ann Widdecombe and John Sergeant strut their stuff for our amusement and entertainment, it has also launched into the limelight a host of new faces.

The professional dancers which unite on the dance floor with their celebrity partners have become almost as famous as those they seek to teach. And perhaps the most famous of them has been Anton du Beke. A regular in the show since it began in 2004, he has partnered a host of stars among them Ann Widdecombe, the former Maidstone MP; singer Lesley Garret, presenter Esther Rantzen, former Bond girl Fiona Fullerton, TV presenter Kate Garraway and plenty more besides.

But away from the TV screens during the show’s long run, he tours the UK with his long term dance partner Erin Boag – another Strictly regular – thrilling crowds with their performances. He also pops up regularly on a host of TV shows. In short, he’s had a strong career – and at 48 there’s plenty of life in those legs yet... especially as he’s frequently been hinted as a future judge on the show. Born in Sevenoaks in July 1966 – with the rather more modest name of Anthony Beke – his father, Antal, was Hungarian and his mother, Ascension, Spanish. He adored his mother – but refuses to discuss his “nightmare” father who he claims was an abusive alcoholic. He attended the local Wildernesse School, excelling at sport. He played football at county level and even

tried his hand at boxing. And at 14 discovered his local dance school – the Holton School of Dancing in the town. “One day,” he recalls, “I just wandered into a dance class full of girls and that was it. I thought, ‘Hang on! I’ll have a bit of this’. I went back a week later and got dragged up by the teacher. It wasn’t a massive calling. “But it wasn’t the cool thing to do. Everyone else was into disco, but that was never my thing.” Bitten by the bug, he took his first dance exam a few months later and started competitive dancing a few years later.

When the dance school closed in 1987, he left school at 16 to pursue a career in dancing – opting a year later to specialise in ballroom, supplementing his income as a salesman for a bed company in Petts Wood. It was a decision he would not regret. After toiling on the amateur circuit he partnered Erin and the two became a hit. He explains: “We travelled around the world competing. It was very serious; it was all or nothing. It cost me everything I had to follow my chosen path, but people were taking the mickey out of ballroom in a slightly ignorant way, which I didn’t care for. “The old Come Dancing TV show and stereotype did get a bit ridiculous – professional dancers on telly with fake tans and elbows out because they took it so seriously. It just looked funny.” But Strictly would take the dance and transform it. And Anton and Erin were obvious choices as two of the professional dancers.

“We were wary at first,” he admits, “but we decided we’d rather be in than out of it, and as soon as we got involved we thought: ‘Blimey, this is great!’ Introducing the celebrities knocked the edges off – it gave the show humour – but it retained its wonderful showbusiness feel.” Now 12 years in, the show is an annual ratings smash hit. Even if Anton has found himself stuck with some of the, how shall we put it, more ‘interesting’ characters. So what of the former Tory MP – who remains one of the show’s most loved contestants? “Ann really was something,” he explains. “I was worried when I heard we’d be partnered together that she’d be really serious. But as soon as she walked in and we began I realised it would be fun.” Strictly has certainly been a key part of his life. During its three-month run, there’s also two months of preparing for the show. Yet, with Erin – who had a brief break to have a

children – they keep constantly busy...only recently concluding their latest nationwide tour. Other notable highlights include choreographing the hit stage show Simply Ballroom which toured internationally for two years, to four acclaimed sellout tours. In addition, Anton has presented BBC cookery show Step Up To The Plate, been a team captain on BBC show Hole in the Wall and Channel 4’s Draw It! He’s even found time to write two successful books on dancing. So what of the future? And was he tempted to apply for the presenting job

when Sir Bruce Forsyth was forced to step down due to ill health? “The BBC never spoke to me about it,” he admits. “But I’m glad Bruce retired when he wanted to and they didn’t ask him to leave. “Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman were in situ. What would have made me unhappy would have been if they’d asked some random to do it. “It would be a lovely opportunity and I would do it if I was asked. A dancer’s career is short – you just keep going until your legs pack up. “Oh, I don’t know,” he ponders, “I’ll continue to dance forever.” mmm

The nine days of the Dunkirk evacuation lasted from May 26th to June 4th, 1940. Winston Churchill later stated that: “wars were not won by evacuations”, but admitted that this one was a miracle when men from the British Expeditionary Force and the French army were snatched from the jaws of certain death. This was ‘Operation Dynamo’, an operation that was to see the little ships of the Kent ports play a very large part

y late 1939 and early 1940, the German military machine had encountered little resistance to their advance across Europe. The Blitzkrieg tactics of dive bombing and vast tank movements, so successful during the earlier Spanish Civil War and the rape of Czechoslovakia and Poland, were unstoppable when on May 10th, 1940, the German army crossed the borders of Belgium, Holland and Luxembourg. With the obvious threat of an invasion by Germany foremost in the minds of the French and British, an army known as the British Expeditionary Force was sent to France to help stem the rapid advance of the enemy. Great faith was placed in a defensive measure known as ‘The Maginot Line’, a huge concrete wall that was built along the borders of Belgium and France to separate them from Germany. Consisting of tunnels and gun positions it was deemed impregnable to any army approaching from the east. In the event the enemy approached from the west and outﬂanked the Maginot Line. The invasion of France had begun.

The speed with which the German army crossed France shocked everyone. From early May they captured town after town, village after village and all the time pushing the BEF and the French towards the Channel ports. Adolf Hitler was said ‘to be beside himself’, with the ease and speed of the occupation of France. Back in England, the news of the invasion was received with trepidation. His Majesty, King George VI speaking on Empire Day in 1940 called for a national day of prayer. He continued that it was obvious that German intentions were to conquer the British Empire and then the world. As the allies fell back to the French coast, Calais was the first port to fall into German hands followed by Boulogne. As the retreat continued the British and French commanders and troops were being squeezed into one area, Dunkirk. After two weeks of hard and constant battle, the troops arrived on the sands and awaited a certain capture. In Kent news of the plight of the men was received with trepidation, fear and sadness. In Dover the flag officer of the port, Vice Admiral Bertram Ramsey,

was given the order to implement Operation ‘Dynamo’, the evacuation of the allied army from Dunkirk. One problem was that he only had a few naval vessels at his disposal. These included several destroyers, cross channel ferries, coasters, barges and tugs. How on earth could he hope to rescue the 45,000 men trapped on the beaches with so few ships? On May 14th, 1940 the BBC made the following announcement :- ‘ The Admiralty have made an order requesting all owners of self propelled pleasure craft, between 30ft and 100ft in length to send all particulars to the Admiralty within 14 days from today, if they have not already been offered or requisitioned’. In Kent the response exceeded all expectations. From the main ports, Dover, Ramsgate, Folkestone and the smaller harbours such as Whitstable, Sheerness and Faversham came the answer: ‘Yes, we are here to help’. Instantly boat owners began to check that their boats were ready to cross the Channel. Upon them slowly came the realisation that enemy aircraft or mines might sink or damage their boats or that the unpredictable Channel might prove too much. Yet all of this was brushed aside as further news came of the plight on the other side. Within a few days the ‘Little Ships’, including the Kent lifeboats, were awaiting orders from the Admiralty. Destined to play a major part in the rescue were the boats operated by Southern Railway. Familiar names like ‘Maid of Kent – Isle of Thanet – Isle of Guernsey and Brighton Belle’ were requisitioned to assist. One particular boat, the ‘Medway Queen’

became famous for its exploits when the ‘Brighton Belle’ hit a submerged wreck just off the Goodwin Sands. Crowded with troops, it was the ‘Medway Queen’ that came to her rescue. Although on fire herself from enemy attacks from the air, she managed to take on board the soldiers and crew from the ‘Belle’ before she sank beneath the waves. From halfway across the Channel the crews of the rescue boats could see the fires started by enemy bombing. Overhead in the dense black smoke, fighters and bombers of the Luftwaffe continued to bomb the beaches whilst the RAF gallantly continued in their attempt to stop the slaughter down below. As the ‘Little Ships’ approached the moles and piers of Dunkirk, the sight of so many devastated troops spurred the crews on to rescue as many as they could. Despite the intense bombing they moved in to take on as many as their boats allowed. Some troops were off-loaded to waiting destroyers lying just off the beach before they turned back again and again to continue the rescue. Others crossed the Channel directly to Dover, Deal or Ramsgate only to turn around and once again cross to Dunkirk. As May 27th, 1940 dawned, the rescue continued unabated. At Dover Vice-Admiral Ramsey, desperate for more ships, was told that reinforcements were coming from Felixstowe in the form of Motor Torpedo Boats. These fast craft were needed to ensure the maximum number of troops were taken off the beach with increasing deployment and ferried out to the waiting naval craft out to sea. One of the crew later recorded his baptism of fire. 

“ We left Dover at 06.35 on May 28th and it was not long before we came under ﬁre from the guns in Calais and Gravelines. The MTBs were scattered and eventually reached Dunkirk at 08.30. The town was being bombed and there was a lot of shelling. We anchored close inshore and began to take on troops whilst under ﬁre. They were exhausted and still carrying their full equipment. Few were able to climb on board and had to be hauled in through the torpedo stern doors. We made several trips to and fro the beaches and managed to transfer over 300 troops to the destroyers. At 21.00 the wind began to freshen and a rough sea got up but the evacuation continued. We left there at 05.50 the next day and returned to Dover for repairs where the enemy had managed to hit us “. And so it continued until June 4th 1940. Since the beginning of Operation ‘Dynamo’ on May 25th, 338,226 British and Allied troops had been landed in the UK with the main disembarkation being in Kent. There now began a major headache for Southern Railway, tasked with transporting the troops to various locations throughout the country. Trains were waiting at Dover, Ramsgate, Folkestone and many other Kent ports as the weary army transferred from the ships in their hundreds. Waiting patiently at stations such as Paddock Wood, Headcorn, Maidstone and many others were the women of Kent with a ready supply of sandwiches and tea or coffee for the tired and hungry troops. What was left of The British Expeditionary Force had returned home safely. It had not been achieved without dreadful loss. The BEF lost 68,111 men

killed, missing, wounded or taken prisoner. In addition hundreds of guns, lorries, motor vehicles and motorcycles, military stores and ammunition were left behind for the enemy to acquire. Over 240 ships were sunk with the RAF losing 474 aircraft. With most of Europe now under the control of the German military machine, Great Britain stood alone. On June 4th, 1940 Winston Churchill spoke in the House of Commons: “ When a week ago Mr Speaker, I asked the house to fix this afternoon as the occasion for a statement, I feared it would be my hard luck to announce the greatest military disaster in our long history. I thought that perhaps 20 or 30 thousand men might be re-embarked. But it certainly seems as though the whole of the French First Army and the whole of the BEF were rescued. Sir, we must be very careful not to assign to this deliverance the attributes of a victory. Wars are not won by evacuation. But there was a victory inside this deliverance which should be noted. It was that of the RAF who whilst not seen over the beaches, were fighting inland to stop the enemy aircraft reaching the beaches. We shall go onto the end. We shall fight in France, we shall fight on the seas and oceans. We shall defend our island whatever the cost may be. We shall never surrender “. Dunkirk showed Adolf Hitler the strength of the British resolve. Perhaps the evacuation of our troops

from under his nose helped inﬂuence his decision not to invade Great Britain in September 1940. We will never really know but had he done so, our lives would have taken on a very different existence to that of today. BY ROBIN J BROOKS

the victims “44” OWNER BACKS HELP FOR DOMESTIC ABUSE VICTIMS or the past year, Ashford Domestic Abuse Forum has been chaired by Elizabeth Tweed, owner of “44” gift shop and gallery in the lovely village of Charing. “I was invited to take on this role a year ago, because I had served on the Select Committee on Domestic Abuse at KCC and learned a lot about the cost to the taxpayer of this awful problem: not only does it ruin lives, but the hundreds of millions of pounds spent on treating victims, policing and bringing to justice the perpetrators as well as in some cases providing drug and alcohol rehabilitation, could be spent on other services if only the cycle of domestic abuse could be broken. Some years ago the ﬁrst step was taken by the Forum in setting up the very successful One Stop Shop in South Ashford, where victims and others affected by domestic abuse can get free advice and help. We are very fortunate to have multi-agency support in delivering this service, including two ﬁrms of family law solicitors, the Police, NHS, Childrens Centres, the Womens Refuge, DWP and Early Intervention Team. In addition to helping victims get through a crisis situation we can then encourage them

I am delighted that Ashford Borough Council have been so impressed with the work we are doing that they are supporting the One Stop Shop with funding for three years. This enables us to concentrate on raising more funds so that we can expand the help we can offer. Even so, we couldn’t do any of it without the Members of the Forum, ranging from teachers, social workers and housing ofﬁcers to the Kent Fire and Rescue Service and the Police and NHS. If they didn’t give their time to co-ordinate the work necessary to help those women (and men) suffering domestic abuse, it probably wouldn’t happen. I am hugely grateful to all of them.”

Gatwick to launch £20 million fund to support and incentivise new domestic and reGional air services Gatwick Airport will establish a £20 million fund to support new air services to Gatwick from around the UK in the ten years following the opening of a second runway. Gatwick already serves 11 destinations within the UK compared with seven at Heathrow. This initiative is designed to ensure that the benefits of a second runway also extends to further improving connectivity between the regions, nations and London. Gatwick’s plans for a second runway will also encourage the growth of regional airports and the development of international services outside London and the South East. Gatwick’s plans aim to strengthen the whole of the UK’s network of airports whereas Heathrow’s plans aim to concentrate international traffic through Heathrow itself, restricting the growth of airports outside the capital.

The fund can be used to incentivise airlines to introduce new services. The fund can also be used to provide jointly-agreed marketing support to regional development or other tourism bodies in regional England or Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland for new services. Along with the fund, Gatwick will also: • Propose and consult on changes to charges to support the growth of national and regional air services and encourage easier connection between airlines • Support funding applications for new Public Sector Obligation services • Work with Government to explore how to safeguard slots for new national and regional services. “Expanding Gatwick will provide more competition and choice for passengers all around the UK.”

tunBridge Wells legal advisOry COmpany Ordered intO liquidatiOn Legal Support and Assistance Limited, a company based in Tunbridge Wells that provided legal advice, often related to insolvency matters, has been ordered into liquidation in the High Court on grounds of public interest following an investigation by the Insolvency Service. The company’s sole director is Mr Gerard Hyde, a struck-off solicitor. Mr Hyde informed the investigation that most of the company’s clients were aware of his being struck-off the roll of solicitors. The servicemen and women were put forward by the Royal British Legion, Team Britannia’s Charity Partner and BLESMA (British Limbless Ex-Service Men’s Association). They come from army and navy units including the Royal Marines, Paras, Welsh Guards and Royal Artillery. Those selected will join ocean-racing legend Alan Priddy and his crew in a £2.9 million waveslicing boat. Team Britannia hopes to set a new world record, for the fastest circumnavigation in a powerboat. Mr Priddy hopes to shave up to seven days off the current powerboat record of 60 days 23 hours 49 minutes, held by New Zealander Pete Bethune. The boat, designed by Professor Bob Cripps utilises a revolutionary design that will see the vessel slice the waves like a torpedo, rather than surfing on top of them. With a super-efficient hull, and powered by a innovative fuel emulsion that slashes harmful pollutants, Mr Priddy says the boat will set new fuel efficiency and emission standards. Freedom Fitness maidstone £165k reFurbishment underway Freedom Fitness Maidstone on St. Peter Street is benefitting from £165k worth of improvement works. The refurbishment is being funded by Freedom Leisure which took over the former LA Fitness club in December 2014 with the aim of encouraging more people in the area to become active. A new studio is being added and will be opened in May 2015 to accommodate an enhanced group exercise timetable, along with a new functional floor in the gym in line with the latest fitness trends. kEnt MEdiAtion hElp victiMs of criME Kent Mediation, a charity in Kent, has been awarded a grant by the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner to promote its free service for victims of crime. The charity uses professionally trained volunteers to offer a service called ‘Restorative Justice’ where victims and perpetrators of crime can meet to discuss the crime, in a safe and supported way. It offers victims a chance to explain the impact of the crime, and encourages the offender to acknowledge and take responsibility for their actions, and any harm they may have caused. All parties must be willing to take part in the process, which is facilitated by Kent Mediators. The process gives a fair and balanced approach to the needs of all involved and allows both parties to reach an agreed outcome.

When energy worker Steve Winterton went on holiday with his headteacher wife, little did he know it would lead to a fund-raising drive at his Maidstone office. Steve is a surveyor in Bircholt Road with UK Power Networks, the company that owns and maintains the electricity distribution networks serving more than eight million properties in the South-East, London and East Anglia. His wife Leanne is Headteacher at Rodmell CoE Primary School, near Lewes, and she likes to visit local schools wherever they go on holiday. About five years ago they visited Gambia and got to know about the Sir Dembo’s Primary School in Wellingara, about 10 miles south of the main tourist area of the West African country. Steve said: “When we returned home we

wanted to do something to help the children at the school. It’s a poor nation and we are comparatively rich. So we did some fund-raising at the school and with the highway assets team at my office and raised about £300 to buy some tables and chairs for the school.” Tomorrow, the couple are heading out to Gambia again and this time will be taking about £640, half of which has been raised by colleagues and half by UK Power Networks as part of the company’s match-funding scheme. While there, the Wintertons will find out what the money will be spent on. He said: “It really is wonderful that my colleagues have taken the school to their hearts. Their generosity is so valued by the children and their community in Gambia.”

White Mill is a smock mill located in Sandwich that was built in 1760 and restored between 1960 and 1981. Whilst not a working windmill, it is a rare survival of a complete milling site, retaining its original wooden machinery, outbuildings and a furnished miller’s cottage.
