here can be no clearer sign that the summer is finally dawning than a calendar festooned with outdoor events. And June is packed with some real treats – from classic car shows, to gardening events and food and drink festivals. Plus plenty more besides. In fact, there is so much going on over the coming weeks, we've got an extra big leisure section inside this month's edition so you don't have to miss a thing. Certainly there have been some great events already in recent weeks. It was hard not to smile during the RHS Chelsea Flower Show recently. The displays are so inspiring and so beautiful they quite take my breath away. What's more, there's so much more to look forward to this summer too, what with the likes of the Kent Show at Detling in July and the Whitstable Oyster Festival too. We really will be spoilt for choice. However, I'm sure I'm not alone in hoping, above all else, for some prolonged good weather. There is nothing more likely to put a spring in my step than warm, sunshine and long, mild evenings. What's more, we are really blessed in Kent to have such a great variety of places to enjoy our time – beautiful coastline, rolling countryside, bustling towns and cities. We really are very lucky. So while you're planning your next trip out with friends of family, we hope you'll find plenty to enjoy inside this month's issue. We've got a little something for everyone in this edition. Including Top Gear star Richard Hammond and his remarkable career. There's also a special look at the fascinating story of scientist William Harvey – who made a major medical discovery and remains one of Kent's most celebrated sons. FULL SPEED ahead for Top Gear’s survival guy As speculation continues over his role in the TV show
WE LOOK BACK OVER THE REMARKABLE CAREER, SO FAR, OF RICHARD HAMMOND
n September 20th, 2006, the Top Gear production crew were ready for a day’s shooting at the RAF Elvington airbase near York. It was not unlike any other onlocation shoot for the team – another day of highspeed hijinks for the millions of fans of the show. But this would turn out unlike any other – perhaps the single biggest defining moment in the show’s history (prior, of course, to Jeremy Clarkson’s ‘fracas’ which brought the curtain down on its long-lasting presenting line-up). Richard Hammond was to be the star of this day’s filming – a chance for him to get behind the wheel of a jet-powered car which had the potential to reach speeds of up to 370mph. Although there was no bid to set any record, the idea was for Hammond to experience the sort of speeds necessary. After six successful runs piloting the Vampire dragster – the same vehicle which Colin Fallows had set the British land speed record at 300mph in 2000 – it was decided for one final run to get some additional footage for the upcoming new season of the show.

The run started smoothly and Hammond was travelling at an incredible 288mph when, all of a sudden, things took a terrible turn. A front tyre on the vehicle burst, the vehicle veered off the runway and overturned on the soft grass verge. As the car span, Hammond’s visor on his crash helmet was pushed up and soil forced into his face and mouth. His helmet embedded in the ground. Emergency crews on stand-by were on the scene in seconds. Hammond was alive but badly injured. The car was turned upright and Hammond cut free from the wreckage and rushed to hospital by air ambulance, going in and out of consciousness. But the impact of the crash was perhaps not obvious at first. He had suffered a severe head injury and would spend the next two weeks in a coma. For the British public, it quickly became apparent just how serious his condition was, with many fearing he would not survive. It was a traumatic moment for his wife and daughters who rushed to his bedside – alongside his Top Gear presenting team, Jeremy Clarkson and James May. His brother in Tunbridge Wells waited nervously for news.
For a week the nation was on a knife edge – the popularity of the then 36-year-old accelerating. Remarkably, he awoke and started a long road to a full recovery. By the January the following year, he was back on our screens, fronting the opening show of the new season of Top Gear. His recovery thanks, in no small part, to his skill behind the wheel. A report by the Health & Safety Executive into the crash found: “Hammond’s instantaneous reaction to the tyre blow-out seems to have been that of a competent high performance car driver, namely to brake the car and to try to steer into the skid. Immediately afterwards he also seems to have followed his training and to have pulled back on the main parachute release lever, thus shutting down the jet engine and also closing the jet and afterburner fuel levers. The main parachute did not have time to deploy before the car ran off the runway.” It added that the accident “may not have been recoverable” even if Hammond had reacted as fast as humanly possible. Now, nearly 10 years on, and the impact of that terrible day still remains.
He explains: “I had some pretty tricky years afterwards. It was a great deal to adjust to. The knock-on effects of the injury meant I was susceptible to depression, obsession, compulsion and paranoia, although I wasn’t aware of that at the time. “It gave me an unnatural platform from which to observe my own mental state. “I lost the ability to connect emotionally, for a time. I began picking away at my own personality and that was exhausting.” Today he reflects that the only difference between him now and then is that he now “likes celery” but he admits it took its toll on his family, friends and colleagues. “I wasn’t easy to work with for a good while. The team were very patient. I was difficult on shoots, losing my temper, feeling threatened by everything and always being very defensive. “I massively needed to know if the crash was my fault, because I’d risked the girls growing up without their dad. The telemetry showed I’d done everything right and it was an accident. It was a great relief.” It may also, ironically, have been the making of him. a CELEBRITY FEATURE

The enormous public reaction underlined just how popular a presenter he was and, of course, the size of the Top Gear fanbase. But the crash opened him up to a whole new audience and since then he has been seen on far more than just car shows. In 2008 he was helicoptered into Tunbridge Wells to film the Christmas advert for supermarket giant Morrisons, while he also picked up presenting jobs including the prime-time UK version of global franchise Total Wipeout. He fronted a science show,

And the future of his role in that seems, it would appear at least, to be over. Since the BBC opted to end its relationship with Jeremy Clarkson after he hit a producer during filming on the show, the contracts for Hammond and James May also appear not to have been renewed. around the world will, it seems, have to wait and see. In recent weeks, however, he has been reunited with Clarkson and May for a series of live shows – they were forced to drop the Top Gear branding after the Clarkson fall-out – playing to arena size crowds around the world. It seems unlikely the trio will not continue to work together in some capacity in the years ahead. But for Hammond, his role as a presenter shows little sign of the work drying up. He remains, for now at least, committed to other work on the BBC

and commands not only a big audience but an equally as big salary. He lives in a £2m “pretend castle” in Ross-on-Wye and has an eye-watering collection of sports cars and motorbikes. He’s certainly not short of a bob of two. Born in December 1969 in Solihull, Warwickshire, his family moved to north Yorkshire in the mid 1980s and he attended Rippon Grammar school before he says he was “booted out”. After college he sought a career in the media, working for a string of local BBC radio stations. a

He explains: “I spent the next 10 years slogging away in local radio and missed out on a lot of fun. I was trying to get my career going so I didn’t do a lot of stuff that 20-year-olds did. You need dedication – when luck comes calling.” Certainly 2002 would prove a lucky year. Not only did he tie the knot with Amanda ‘Mindy’ Etheridge – the couple now have two daughters – but he also landed the role in what, up until this year, was the current line-up of Top Gear.
Few presenting roles last so long, or appear to go from strength-to-strength. But the chemistry between the three presenters and a diet of fast cars and humour proved a winning one. The show would go on to become an enormous global success. As for the future, the only thing which seems certain is that Richard Hammond will not be leaving our screens. Hopes of him remaining in Top Gear, however, maybe a wish too far. mmm

Béarnaise sauce drizzled over salmon with grilled summer vegetables Recipe by: Tudor Park Marriott Hotel & Country Club
Ingredients 200g clarified butter 3 egg yolks Small splash of white wine vinegar Juice of half a lemon Salt and pepper Small pinch of fresh chopped tarragon Small pinch of fresh chopped chervil Small pinch of cayenne pepper
Method • First, make the clarified butter. In a saucepan, slowly melt around 250g of unsalted butter, and simmer gently until the foam rises to the top. Skim off the foam and then pass the liquid through a fine strainer, or piece of muslin, reserving the clear liquid. • Put the egg yolks and white wine vinegar in a bowl and sit over a pan of simmering water. • Whisk until the egg yolks begin to thicken and become paler in colour. Look for the `ribbon effect’ drag your spoon through the mix and, if it leaves a trail for a short while, it is ready. Don’t walk away from the stove while doing this as it is easy to overcook and scramble the egg. • Remove the bowl from the simmering water and slowly pour in the warm, but not hot, clarified butter while still whisking until all is combined. The mixture will gradually thicken towards the end. Be careful not to pour in too quickly as the mixture will separate. • Stir in the lemon juice, herbs and cayenne pepper and adjust seasoning to taste. The sauce needs to be used on the day as it will split if refrigerated and then reheated. • Serve drizzled over grilled meats or fish.
Chef’s Tip On our summer menu, I serve Béarnaise sauce with salmon steaks and grilled baby veg, including Little Gem lettuce – yes, you can cook lettuce. Cut the lettuce in half, brush with oil and season with salt and pepper. Place under the grill or on the cooler part of a barbecue, for 3-4 minutes, until the outer leaves are charred. And if you are going to the trouble to make clarified butter, do it in large batches. It will keep in the fridge for 3-4 months or can be frozen ready for use. FOOD AND DRINK

Salmon gravlax, citrus cucumber & wasabi emulsion Method For the salmon gravlax (prepare 24 hours before) • Mix together the salt, sugar, coriander seeds, peppercorn seeds, lemon zest, orange zest and lemongrass and sprinkle heavily (both sides) all over the salmon fillet, wrap in cling film and leave for 12 hours to cure. After 12 hours gently rinse the cure from the salmon and dry on a j-cloth. Lightly spread the Dijon mustard on top of the salmon and sprinkle the chopped dill to cover the mustard. Wrap tightly in cling film and refrigerate. For the lemon gel • Bring to the boil the sugar, water & lemon zest and peeled lemon, then pass and bring back to the boil, add the agar agar, and use a blender to mix together thoroughly, re-boil for 2 minutes to ensure the agar has cooked, and then set in a tray. When set, blitz in a blender with the juice of 1 lemon to bring it together to form a gel. Adjust consistency with a splash of water if the gel is too thick.
For the wasabi emulsion • Mix the wasabi powder and water to form a paste, whisk in the egg yolk and vinegar to the wasabi paste to combine all together. Slowly add both oils to the wasabi mixture whilst whisking to form the emulsion. Season with lemon juice and salt to taste. To serve • Portion the salmon into 12 cubes, remove blood line and serve 3 pieces to each guest. Evenly use the lemon gel and wasabi emulsion to garnish the plate, and assemble the other garnishes as desired.
Ingredients Salmon: 600g salmon fillet 300g salt 90g sugar 5g coriander seeds (crushed) 5g white peppercorns (crushed) Zest and juice of 2 lemons Zest and juice of 1 orange 1 stick lemongrass (crushed) To finish the cured salmon: 50g dill finely chopped 1 tbsp Dijon mustard Lemon gel: 100ml water 100g sugar 1 whole lemon (zest, remove pith, cut lemon in quarters) 3g agar agar Wasabi emulsion: 20g wasabi powder 25g pasteurised egg yolk (1-2 eggs) 1g table salt 5ml lemon juice 25ml olive oil 50ml vegetable oil 2ml white wine vinegar 10ml water

ou may think of windsurfing as a sport of the 1980’s or perhaps you would consider it necessary to be a professional in order to do well, but the sport really has progressed As the typical English summer is pretty unreliable and prone to the odd bit of low pressure, windsurfing is a sport that can take advantage of these conditions. With the UK being one of the windiest places in Europe, windsurfing is the ideal sport if you enjoy the outdoors. The Kent and Sussex coastlines offer an abundance of beaches with excellent waves and wind. You will meet some very friendly people of all ages if you take up the sport, or even if you just fancy going down to the beach for a day trip. A few of the most popular Kent beaches boast the best places to visit and experience windsurfing. Minster on the Isle of Sheppey is easy to get to from Maidstone or Medway. There is easy parking on the shingle bank, with a friendly welcoming crowd on the weekends. It’s a great place to learn and also nice and shallow at low tide. There is a windsurf academy situated there too. Whitstable, Tankerton and Minnis Bay have similar conditions and can be sailed at several heights of the tide (check with the locals though). Further down the coast, Hythe, Dymchurch and Littlestone are also very popular.

Although not in Kent, Camber Sands (Broomhill end) is popular when it’s windy. You’ll need to have some experience to windsurf here when the wind is up, but with a few lessons and at low tide it’s definitely worth a try. The beach is even popular among the professionals - who can sometimes be seen practising freestyle moves, wave sailing and loops. Watch out for the shipwreck nearby though, at low tide it’s exposed but if you’re not sure where it is, ask someone to point it out to you. Either way, it’s pretty much the windiest beach in the south east when we get Atlantic swells or a south westerly wind. Windsurfing is a great way to make friends, enjoy days out with family and friends and see some of our wonderful coastline.

Cygnets Model Boat CluB ygnets Model Boat Club was formed in 1959 and has had an active membership ever since. It has had the exclusive use of the lake at Mote Park since 1978. We have excellent facilities and in 2012, a new compound was built as part of lottery funding given to the Park to improve facilities. At the moment The Club includes all sections of Model Boating, Scale, Sail, IC and Fast Electric. The Club runs its own competitions throughout the year including Sail, IC and Fast Electric racing. They hold a number of regattas throughout the year such as Boats on the Mote for all classes, Tugs and Warships day for the scale modellers, OMRA Z Class racing and MPBA Multi-racing.

The life and Times of
William Harvey Folkestone to the royal court and a ground-breaking discovery
just who was the man who lends his name to one of the county’s biggest hospitals?
n the 1960’s, part of Kent was undergoing a transformation and Ashford, in particular, was earmarked for significant expansion. As part of a bid to create major areas to allow for the movement of people from a rapidly overcrowding London, the Kent market town was identified as a place which could support sufficient growth. As a consequence, facilities needed to be upgraded and expanded – among them the need for a new hospital. The existing town centre site was sufficient for the town’s population, but not for the influx of thousands of new homes. As a result, the decision was taken for a new hospital, outside the town centre, and on a larger site. By 1973, and with a budget of £8 million, work began on making the plans a reality over the following six years. By 1979, the new hospital, in Willesborough, one of the suburbs of the town, was complete and ready to welcome its first patients.

All that was left was to choose a name. And who better than to name it after than one of the county’s most celebrated scientific sons – one behind one of the most significant discoveries in medical history? William Harvey had been born in Folkestone on April 1, 1578; his father a man of high repute and regard in the town. Thomas Harvey served as mayor in 1600 and was a judge of fact – rather than law – in the town. He was a key inspirational figure to his sons and embedded into them the desire to succeed for the greater good. A bright scholar, he attended a local school, learning Latin, before he spent five years at Canterbury’s King’s School, leaving to attend Cambridge University, graduating in 1597. He then travelled through Europe to enrol at the University of Padua two years later. There he studied medicine, tutored by the scientist and surgeon Hieronymus Fabricius. Fabricius was already making a name for himself with his pioneering work. He pioneered public a HISTORY FEATURE

anatomical dissections – allowing medicine students to make essential discoveries about the way the body works and operates. In particular, he realised the veins in the human body appeared to have one-way valves. It was one key step on the path to discovery which would forever etch the name of William Harvey into the history books. The young William would be just one of a number of famous students he would teach – graduating as a doctor of medicine, at the age of 24, in 1602. He then returned to the UK where he returned to Cambridge before joining the College of Physicians

in London in 1604, shortly after which he married Elizabeth Browne. She was the daughter of the personal physician to Elizabeth I. It was an influence and an access to the highest levels of power that would give Harvey an enviable position on which to develop his own research. By 1607 he became a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. Over the following years he was appointed as a physician at St Bartholomew’s Hospital, becoming the ‘physician in charge’ at the famous hospital in October 1609. Living in Ludgate, he was paid the princely sum of £33 a year for the role. By 1615 he was appointed to the office of Lumleian lecturer, a role which saw its members deliver lectures spreading the increasing knowledge of the anatomy throughout the country. The notes he used remain in the British Museum. During this period, he continued extensive dissection of animals, with a particular focus on the blood’s circulation. He began to reveal his findings in 1616. Combining his role with the Lumleian organisation and St Bart’s, he added another prestigious feather to his cap when, in 1618, he was appointed physician to King James I and subsequently Charles I. He was even called upon by the king to intervene in cases of witchcraft. Harvey did not believe in the existence of magic and his intervention prevented several women from being killed amid allegations of witchcraft.

But it was in 1628 when he published perhaps the work which defines him so many hundreds of years later. Exercitatio Anatomica de Motu Cordis et Sanguinis in Animalibus – or, in English, An Anatomical Study of the Motion of the Heart and of the Blood in Animals – would advance previous theories with key scientific observations. In doing so, he became the first to explain that it was the heart which propelled the blood in a circular motion through the body. Applauded in England, many across the Continent dismissed his findings at the time. Back then, the theory accepted was that there were two systems in the body dealing with the transportation of blood around the body. It was believed the dark red blood veins came from the liver and the bright red blood in arteries from the heart. It was felt the liver and heart made the blood and then it was used up by pumping it around the body. What William Harvey confirmed, after his dissection of both animal and human bodies, was that it was simply impossible for the liver theory to be correct. He correctly identified that the blood
flowed through the heart in two loops – one went to the lungs for oxygen, the other to the organs and blood tissue to transport the oxygen. The heart, he concluded, was simply the pump which powered the blood through our bodies. He continued to serve the royal household through the English Civil War and he developed a close bond with Charles. He remained, throughout his life, fascinated by the human body. Although only proved years after his death, he suggested the theory that fertilisation was caused by the combination of an egg and sperm. However, his personal life did not match his success professionally. Although it is not recorded when, his wife died before him and the two never had children. Perhaps reflecting the high circles in which he mingled, he enjoyed a long life. He passed away on June 3rd, 1657, aged 79, of a stroke, in Roehampton, in the home of his brother Eliab. His remarkable discoveries and achievements would comfortably out live him. mmm

As yet another ancestral home prepares to become exclusive apartments
Robin J bRooks looks at the histoRy of the latest, PReston hall neaR aylesfoRd and its Vad connections he present building was the design work of well known architect John Thomas, but a manorial mansion had been on the same site since 1102 when it was owned by the Culpepper family. For over 400 years it remained in their hands until the death of Alicia Culpepper in 1734. The mansion and estate then passed to the brother of her husband, Dr Charles Milner, who lived there until his death in 1771 when it was willed to a nephew, Charles Cotton. In 1848 the estate was acquired by a successful railway contractor, Edward Ladd Betts, who promptly demolished the house and had a new one rebuilt in a more modern Jacobean style. Betts was responsible for the construction of the Medway Valley railway line which still runs through the Preston Hall estate. Despite having great wealth by building railways in other parts of the country, he

became bankrupt in 1866 and was forced to sell the estate to another railway magnate, Thomas Brassey. Like Edward Betts, Brassey became a benefactor to the village of Aylesford including the establishment of the village school. He later became a Deputy Lieutenant and High Sheriff of Kent before dying in 1891, whereupon the estate passed to various relatives until 1906 when it was sold to Robert Horner of Spitalfields. He declined to take up residence and a year later it was sold to Robert Sauber. It is at this point that the manor became part of the history of the First World War. In 1909 a voluntary nursing service known as the Voluntary Aid Detachment (VAD) was established with the help of the Red Cross and the Order of St John. Its duty was to provide nursing for service personnel injured during the course of their duties. With units both in the UK and in parts of the British Empire, by the summer of 1914 over 2,500 VAD HISTORY FEATURE

establishments were working in the UK alone. One of the detachments was at Preston Hall where the widow of Robert Saubers had allowed the estate to be used for the injured and gassed servicemen returning from the battlefields of Belgium and France. Badly wounded both physically and mentally and suffering from the effects of gas, the need for constant nursing became prevalent but it was not only nursing that was provided. After many months of living on very little good food at the front, the wholesome cooking and clean linen at Preston Hall made life more bearable for the troops. Although not trained in advanced skills such as surgery, the nurses nonetheless gave comfort and sustenance to

the men as they sat in the lush grounds of Preston Hall to recuperate from their ordeals. Towards the latter years of the war in addition to its recuperation activities, the VAD unit became well known and experienced in the treatment of Tuberculosis. The end of hostilities had seen the Leeds Fireclay Company Limited purchase the entire estate but when the War Office decided that the house should continue its commitment as a major TB centre, it was sold to Industrial Settlements Incorporated in 1919 for the sum of ÂŁ30,000 in order for it to continue the good work. To further improve the rehabilitation process, a sanatorium was built together with bungalows close to the house for those undergoing treatment. Every day the patients could be seen a

the coming of the National Health Service at the end of the war, the hospital passed to the local health board. It did remain within the confines of the British Legion village at Aylesford and as part of the Legion’s 50th anniversary celebrations, the Queen granted the Legion the prefix ‘Royal’. With a gradual rundown of the colony, due to the fact that Tuberculosis was now being

taking the fresh air sitting on the balconies and resting. At that time both were considered the best cure for Tuberculosis. Recognised as the main treatment centre for the disease, it was decided that a larger organisation should take over the facility. Accordingly the British Legion which had been formed some years earlier and who had an establishment at the nearby village of Aylesford, agreed to take over the colony from April 1st, 1925. This prompted a rise in patients, so much so that by the end of 1928, the colony had grown to over 500. Once again with the outbreak of the Second World War, the hospital was requisitioned by the government in July 1939 and again became a rehabilitation hospital for the war wounded. It served in this role for the six years of war but with

treated by modern anti-biotics, the cottages and shop were incorporated into the Royal British Legion Housing Association. Preston Hall itself became the headquarters of the Maidstone Health Authority between 1983 and 2012 with much of the surrounding ground accommodating various departments of the health service. However, with the economic situation in many local government departments including health becoming subject to cut-backs, the house was sold by the Department of Health to Weston Homes in March 2014.
The company are proud to be associated with such a prestigious building and have promised to return the mansion back to its former glory. Sadly the cottages of the colony had fallen into disrepair over the past 20 years and are now scheduled to be pulled down, thus allowing the ground to be re-developed for housing and industry. With the exception of the mansion, very little will remain as a reminder that Preston Hall was once at the forefront of the treatment for Tuberculosis and a Voluntary Aid Detachment. The popular attraction, part of the award-winning Continuum Attractions group, was named winner in the Best Customer Service category of what has been dubbed the Oscars of the museum world. The awards attract some of the biggest names in the industry, which this year included the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Tate, the National Trust for Scotland, and the Natural History Museum. NEW SURVEY REVEALS CONSUMER UNCERTAINTY ABOUT HOME LOAN APPLICATION PROCESS New research from credit information provider, Equifax, conducted in collaboration with What Mortgage reveals that four in ten (42%) of those surveyed in the South East thought they would not find it easy to provide all supporting evidence of expenditure information needed when applying for a mortgage. However, of those who had already applied for a mortgage in the region, less than half of this number (19%) actually found it difficult to provide all the information required, with only two in ten finding they had overestimated what they could borrow. The release of the research coincides with the anniversary of the new affordability rules which came into effect last April and demonstrates the contrast in consumer perceptions about the
mortgage application process and the reality of the property purchase process since the new rules came into effect. Holly Williamson, 26, a secondary school teacher from Essex recently went through the mortgage application process as part of the ‘Help to Buy’ Scheme. “I was aware that I would potentially need to supply a lot of information when applying for a mortgage but I wasn’t sure exactly how much detail was needed. It turned out to be a lot less than I had originally thought. I had to go through my income details with the bank and also some recent statements from my current account in a bit more detail. Kent to Benefit from acceSS to international lawyerS People and businesses in Kent can now access a new network of international law firms to advise on legal issues in the EU and further afield. This includes any legal issue where there is an overseas element, such as commercial and business dealings, and private wealth issues, including inheritance and property matters. The new service is being offered through Cripps through its membership of MarcAlliance – a network of law and tax firms – as the network’s England and Wales representative. Established in December 2013, MarcAlliance has a strong presence in the European Union as well as members further afield in countries such as Thailand and Brazil. Its aim is to cover all mature legal jurisdictions in the world within five years. “We have an increasing number of clients working in foreign jurisdictions. We already have good relations with many overseas law firms but we felt we needed a more formal arrangement,” said Cripps managing partner Gavin Tyler. “Dealing with legal matters abroad can be a minefield even for seemingly straight forward issues and requires in depth knowledge of the legal system involved. THOUGHTFUL IMPERIAL COLLEGE STUDENT HAS ACCOMMODATION FEES PAID FOR Uniplaces, the fastest growing online booking platform for student accommodation, has today announced Francisco Goiana da Silva from Imperial College London as one of five friendly students who will be awarded its first ever Living the Dream scholarship. BRITS’ IGNORANCE OVER INTOLERANCES REVEALED New research out today, and in time for Coeliac Awareness Week, has revealed we’re still a nation that’s ignorant about intolerances despite over one in five of the UK thought to have a food allergy or intolerance. The research, by Udi’s Gluten Free, has revealed that more than one in ten (11%) have now switched to a gluten-free diet. Indeed 29% of those aged 18-24 have cut gluten out of their diet. Despite this, ignorance of coeliac disease is still widespread. Just 14% of young adults recognise the symptoms of gluten intolerance; with 9% thinking ‘coeliac’ is a famous Italian restaurant! However, as a nation, 91% claim to know what coeliac disease is, but of those, a muddled 2/3rds don’t know what the symptoms are! Confusion continues with more than 3 in 10 Brits believing that gluten is a type of carbohydrate found in potatoes, breads and pasta. Meanwhile, one in ten do not realise pasta is not suitable for those with coeliac disease and the same have no idea beer can contain gluten. Holly Wales, product development director at Udi’s Gluten Free comments; “Allergies and
intolerances are on the rise and as a nation it seems we need to be more aware of such things. “Our research also identified that just under a half (41%) of the UK feel sorry for those living a glutenfree diet. People who are coeliac or are leading a gluten-free life don’t want to be felt sorry for; they want to feel normal and eat free-from foods where they don’t have to compromise on taste.” The study also revealed that other conditions, which baffle us, include irritable bowel syndrome, with 1 in 20 people thinking that IBS is a Silicone Valley computer company. On average 50% of the UK population have suffered at least one of the main symptoms of coeliac disease, but 61% of those mistook the symptoms for IBS. 1 in 10 of us self-diagnose our symptoms, which can lead to serious problems. Even so, only 2 in 10 sought help from their GP and the same amount didn’t think their symptoms were important enough to waste their GPs time. Brits continue to be confused over a number of conditions/illnesses and their symptoms with many (66%) confusing malaria with the flu and just 1 in 10 people able to recognise the true illness. SURvEY SHOw UP TO 30 SHOPwORKERS IN THE SOUTH EAST ARE ASSAULTED EvERY DAY Shopworkers trade union leader John Hannett has today released survey results which show that last year, on average, 30 shopworkers were assaulted every day across the South East of England. The survey also reveals that almost 35% of shopworkers were threatened by customers and over half were verbally abused, both above the national average. John Hannett – Usdaw General Secretary says: “Our survey shows that life on the frontline of retail can be pretty tough for many shopworkers and there is still a lot to do to help protect them. So we welcome Labour’s manifesto commitment to ensure staff who work with the public are given greater protection, with tougher penalties for those who assault them. “We launched our Freedom From Fear Campaign in the face of growing concerns amongst retail workers about violence, threats and abuse. The campaign works with retailers to promote respect and make workplaces safer for staff and customers alike.
“All too often criminals who assault staff are not even sent to court, and those who are can receive derisory sentences. In other cases, where the offender often isn’t charged at all victims are left feeling that no one cares that they were assaulted. “Retail crime remains too high and there needs to be action to protect shopworkers. On four occasions in the current Parliament, Conservative and Liberal Democrat MPs combined to defeat Labour amendments to legislation that would have provided stiffer penalties for those who assault shopworkers. “It is time for the Government to act and the record shows that a Labour Government will deliver. Retail staff have a crucial role in our communities and that role must be valued and respected.” Yvette Cooper – Shadow Home Secretary says: “I’m a big supporter of Usdaw’s Freedom From Fear campaign, raising awareness and ways to make people feel safer at work. KENT HELP TO BUY FIGURES PLACE ASHFORD IN LEAD FOR INCREASE IN HOMEBUYERS Recent figures released by the HCA reveal that Ashford has demonstrated the biggest overall percentage increase in the number of homebuyers using the government backed Help to Buy scheme in Kent over the last three months. Ashford has seen a 67 per cent increase in numbers of those taking up on the helpful five per cent homebuying scheme in the last quarter of the year. In terms of overall figures for Help to Buy, Dartford and Tonbridge and Malling are the leading Kent authorities for the total number of homebuyers using the helpful five per cent deposit scheme. The scheme, now two years old, enables anyone to put down just five 5 per cent as a deposit for their new home and take advantage of a Government equity loan providing access to more affordable mortgage rates. FM CONWAY TO MAINTAIN ROCHESTER BRIDGES A five-year contract to maintain the bridges over the Medway at Rochester has been awarded to FM Conway, a leading infrastructure services company. The Kent-based construction business, which has its headquarters in Dartford, will be responsible for the upkeep of the iconic Grade II listed Rochester Old Bridge, the 1970s New Bridge and the Service Bridge, as well as associated assets owned by Rochester Bridge Trust.
FM Conway, which has a specialist bridges and structures division, previously worked for the Trust on a complex project to clean and inspect the river wall below Rochester Esplanade. Sue Threader, chief executive of Rochester Bridge Trust, said: “The Trust is committed to maintaining its bridges to the very highest specifications both in terms of their structure and their appearance. “FM Conway is one of the UK’s leading independent construction companies, which has won multiple awards for its work. WIND FARM ExTENSION GETS UNDERWAY OFF KENT COAST Swedish energy giant Vattenfall has kicked off construction of a multi-million pound extension to its Kentish Flats wind farm. The extension - which is expected to cost over £150 million - will be the only wind farm to be developed offshore in UK waters in 2015. Construction started over the weekend, as the foundations for the 15 turbine scheme were laid. The new turbines - which will sit around eight kilometres offshore - are due to be installed this summer. The first power from the new turbines will be generated sometime later in the year. Piers Guy, Vattenfall’s UK Country Manager, said: “We’re proud to be carrying the UK offshore wind flag this year as the only developer building offshore. It’s important the UK pipeline keeps delivering – and Kentish Flats Extension does that in a modest way so that British suppliers can maintain a foothold in the sector and help capture the significant economic opportunities that go with it.” LOCAL NEWS

When and why did you start taking an interest in photography? I have had an interest in photography for the last seven to eight years, initially general subjects, but more recently wildlife especially in Africa. I particularly aim to get action shots rather than just animal portraits. These require both luck and patience, together with knowledge of animal behaviour. I therefore go with local (to Africa!) companies that organise specialist photography trips and who have good local knowledge together with expert photographer guides.

However, most wildlife photography has to been done from a distance and then the correct equipment does matter. It is easy to spend thousands of pounds buying suitable lenses and cameras. Close up photography, such as of insects and plants, can be very rewarding, can be done in your own garden, and requires far less equipment.
