pril is a month rather unfairly labelled as being the one of showers. But really it is something of a gateway month; leading us through spring and giving us a few tantalising glimpses of the early summer which lurks just around the corner. Or at least I hope it does. I don’t know about you, but I am in desperate need of some revitalising sunshine! Because the sun rays means we all start to explore this wonderful county of ours – be it with walks through the daffodils or to see the newly born lambs, or trips out with family and friends to enjoy a day out at a top attraction. We recently produced our latest guide to the best places in the county. Our Best Attractions in Kent has proved phenomenally popular so far, with thousands upon thousands already snapped up and distributed to tourist offices and hotels around the county. It’s us doing our bit to put the spotlight on the top sites in Kent and make sure they flourish. I’m certainly already using it to plan future days out – pick up a copy and I’m sure you will too! We’re also working on our next edition of the Best Places to Dine – a guide which did for our restaurants what the tourism guide is doing for the attractions. If you want to make sure you’re included, please make sure you get in touch as soon as possible. For now, though, we have another jampacked edition of mmm featuring all your favourite sections; fashion, travel, days out, beauty and so much more. Our celebrity interview this month is Sir Ian McKellen – best known for his roles in the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit movies. We think he will sprinkle some of his wizard magic over this edition. or a man who has crafted a career by being the epitome of a tough, no-nonsense, gun-tottin’ all-action actor, Jason Statham has a rather odd background. From a grammar school in Great Yarmouth to being part of the England 1990 Commonwealth Games diving team, his career path is certainly one with plenty of twists and turns. Today he is globally famous for his roles in the likes of the Expendable movies, Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and the Transporter franchise. He shoots, he punches, he leaps through flames…he is tough and he is fearless. What’s more, he stepped out with Rochester’s very own Kelly Brook for seven years – the pair first meeting in 1997 when Kelly was just 18. Together they started flying up the celebrity league table and Kelly professed he was her first love. But it was to crumble seven years later after she met Titanic star Billy Zane. Yet the set-back did not deter Statham. In 1998 he hit the big time alongside his former school pal Vinnie Jones in Guy Richie’s Lock Stock movie and has never looked back. His desire to be a stuntman saw him do all his own daredevil stunts in The Transporter movies. While his schoolboy love of a range of martial arts ensured he was well equipped to take on tough man roles in the likes of the remake of the Italian Job, as an SAS soldier in the star-studded the Expendables and in the most recent Fast and Furious movies. a ©2013 Lionsgate

And he’s long since found love too – he announced his engagement to long-time girlfriend, the Victoria Secret model Rosie Huntington-Whiteley – although the pair prefer to keep their private life just that. “We’re best mates. He makes me laugh every day,” she says. “I almost feel like I never had a proper boyfriend before. “‘It’s more work to put your relationship out there than it is to keep it behind closed doors.” Born in Derbyshire in 1967, Statham’s mother was a dancer and his father a street seller. After moving to Norfolk he went to the local grammar school where he played football alongside friend Vinnie Jones who would go on to reach the top of the game with Wimbledon and England. But despite his footballing talents, it was diving which put him on the road to stardom. For 12 years he was a member of Britain’s national diving squad, competing at the Commonwealth

Games and becoming one of the best divers in the world as a consequence. So why not push for an Olympic place? “I just thought to make the Olympics I would have to train for another four years and I thought better of it,” he says. Having quit diving he continued modelling for a sports company – he had previously landed a contract with the brand French Connection and even appeared in pop videos for the likes of The Shamen and The Beautiful South – and supplemented it with a little street selling of his own. And, legend has it, it was there he was spotted by the now ex-Mr Madonna – director Guy Richie. “It was just one of those chance things,” he says. “You don’t usually meet directors on the streets.” But he impressed enough to get a role in the movie. And the roles have not dried up since. a

“I really enjoyed working with Guy Ritchie,” he says. “Firstly, it gave me a career, and two, they’re probably a couple of the best films I’ve ever done. I thought The Bank Job was a really quality movie. “Working with Luc Besson and doing the first two The Transporter movies were pretty good. “You’re always aiming for something and trying to push yourself to do something good. A movie, it’s like a very complicated timepiece. There’s a lot of wheels in a watch. And some of those wheels, if they don’t turn right, then, you know, the watch isn’t going to tell the time.” He has, however, become somewhat typecast as the classic antihero. But that hasn’t stopped him diversifying from the classic action flick. He’s voiced a character in the animated take on the Shakespeare classic, Gnomeo and Juliet, plus appeared alongside the likes of Miranda Hart and Melissa McCarthy in the action comedy Spy. a

“I’ve always been apprehensive about trying to do a comedy, because they’re either brilliant or they’re terrible,” he admits. “At least in making an action film, there’s always going to be someone who wants to see a car chase. Even if a lot of the people don’t like it, there will be a lot of people that do. But bad comedy is just garbage. But Spy works, and I give all the credit to director Paul Feig and the writing.” He’s even appeared in video games too – including the likes of Red Faction II and an early Call of Duty game. Now 48, he has 25 films to his name – his latest, Mechanic: Resurrection is due out later this year. Granted, he’s not everyone’s cup of tea – but then explosion-heavy action movies rarely are – but there’s a huge market out there for just that and Jason Statham is managing to mine a very rich seam indeed. What’s more, as he gets older he seems to be picking up even more roles and his reputation grows. With marriage around the corner, and a personal fortune estimated to around the £30 million mark, he’s certainly come a long way since those days of football and the diving board. Equipment Needed: Set of light dumbbells (3-5 lbs), a chair, interval timer. What to Do: Perform all exercises for 45 seconds and rest 15 seconds after each one. Complete each routine three times and rest one full minute after each circuit. Each workout equals 17-minutes, making them totally doable! Monday Leg raise, plank, hip extensions left side, hip extensions right side and march in place. Speedy kale & ricotta tagliatelle Ingredients 300g essential Waitrose tagliatelle 200g pack essential Waitrose kale 3 tbsp olive oil 1 large red chilli, seeded and ﬁnely chopped 2 cloves garlic, ﬁnely chopped 4 salad onions, thinly sliced ½ x 25g pack fresh basil, leaves roughly torn 125g essential Waitrose Italian ricotta 1 tbsp Cooks’ ingredients toasted pinenuts

Method • Cook the tagliatelle in a large pan of boiling salted water for six minutes, then add the kale and cook for a further three minutes. • Meanwhile, heat the oil in a small pan and add the chilli and garlic. Cook gently for two minutes, then add the salad onions and cook for a further minute.

• Drain the tagliatelle and kale and return to the pan. Stir in the garlic mixture and most of the basil. Gently fold through the ricotta. • Divide between four shallow bowls then scatter over the pinenuts, remaining basil and a good grinding of coarse black pepper.

Shrimp Risotto Ingredients Tablespoon extra virgin olive oil 1/4 cup finely chopped onion 1 garlic clove, grated or minced 1 cup Arborio rice 1/3 cup dry white wine 3 1/2 cups hot chicken, vegetable or seafood stock zest of 1 lemon pinch of saffron 8 jumbo shrimp, peeled, deveined and butterflied 3/4 cup freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese Tablespoon fresh thyme

Method • In a medium saucepan gently cook the onion in the olive oil over low heat for about five minutes, until onion is a little soft. Add the grated garlic and cook for a minute more Increase heat to medium and add the rice. Cook for about three minutes, stirring a couple of times. Add the wine and cook for two to three minutes, stirring. Add about one cup of the broth, the lemon zest, saffron and stir. Cook over medium/low heat so that the rice is just at a low simmer. When the liquid is almost completely absorbed, add about 1/2 cup of broth. • You know it’s time to add more broth when you run a spoon through the risotto and the liquid doesn’t pour back onto the bottom of the pan. Keep adding broth a little at a time and stir occasionally until the rice is just tender, about 25 minutes. • Meanwhile, bring a medium pot of water to the boil. Turn off heat and wait a couple of minutes. Add the shrimp and poach in this hot water for about two minutes until shrimp turns pink and is just done. It doesn’t take long, then drain.

• Add the cheese and about 3/4 of the thyme to the risotto and blend. Taste and if it needs a little salt, add it now. Divide risotto among four plates. Top with two poached shrimp each and sprinkle the rest of the fresh thyme on top. You can take a vegetable peeler and peel strips of extra Pargmigiano if you want for garnish.

SEASONAL FRUITS ripe for April DISCOVER THE SOURCES OF NATURAL VITAMINS, FIBRE AND ANTIOXIDANTS

ARTICHOKES

Why should you make them a priority this month? One steamed artichoke has around 65 calories and a large 10 grams of fibre, and they’re an excellent source of vitamin C, folate, and potassium. Plus, they contain the antioxidant silymarin, which helps protect from heart disease and helps your liver do its job. • The artichoke is one of the most popular edible flower buds of the Mediterranean region. Known as “Ankinara” in Greek, its use as a vegetable is well known to the ancient Greeks and Romans who advocated it for its medicinal and health benefiting qualities. Botanically, it belongs within the thistle family (Asteraceae), in the genus: Cynara. Scientific name: Cyanara scolymus. • Each artichoke globe measures about 6-10 cm in diameter and weighs about 150 g. Fuzzy; immature florets at the centre of the bud constitute its “choke.” These are inedible in older, and larger flowers. Edible portion of the buds consists primarily of the fleshy lower portions of the involucre bracts (triangular scales) and the base, known as the “heart.”

CARA CARA ORANGES

These were originally discovered in 1976 at Hacienda Cara Cara in Venezuela. This orange has reddish-pink flesh and a sweet, tangy flavour similar to strawberries and cranberries. Because they’re seedless, many people prefer using them in recipes like fruit salad, salsa, or dipped in dark chocolate. • The Cara Cara is sometimes called the red orange fruit because, while it resembles a navel orange from the outside, the inner flesh is pinkish-red. The flavour is like that of an orange but slightly tangier. It imparts a range of nutritional value, including vitamin C, folate, vitamin A and potassium. The nutrition in these fruits help you meet your daily needs for several vitamins and minerals.

SCALLIONS

Also called green or spring onions, scallions are in season beginning late March. They’re somewhat sweeter than onions, with a slight peppery bite. For the best ﬂavour combination, use the green tops for sweetness and white ends for crunch. Scallions are versatile and can be added to most any dish where you want a hint of onion-y ﬂavour, like pasta salads, soups, pizza, guacamole, salad dressing, and scrambled eggs. HEALTHY EATING

AND VEGETABLES SPINACH

This leafy green is an excellent source of ﬁbre, folate, and vitamin K. It’s also brimming with minerals like calcium, iron, and magnesium. In fact, spinach is one of the best sources of the antioxidant lutein, which helps keeps your eyes and your skin looking great. To get the most nutrition out of your spinach, look for those with vibrant, deep leaves - pass on those that are wilted. • Bright, vibrant-looking spinach leaves are not only more appealing to the eye but more nourishing as well. Recent research has shown that spinach leaves that look fully alive and vital have greater concentrations of vitamin C than spinach leaves that are pale in colour. Sir Ian McKellen knight of the acting realm

From sci-fi and wizardry to Shakespeare’s finest, Sir Ian McKellen on his relatively late switch to the big screen and the fame it has delivered

f every actor desires a broad portfolio in order to ensure regular high profile work, then look no further than Sir Ian McKellen. As famous for his work on the stage portraying Shakespeare’s finest creations as he is in the world of big budget blockbuster sciencefiction movies, he has enjoyed a career stretching across seven decades. And, as a consequence, he is perhaps better known today than ever before. His role as the wizard Gandalf in the Lord of the Rings movies – and the following trilogy for The Hobbit – saw him appeal to an entirely new generation and win wide critical, as well as popular, acclaim. While his role in the X Men movies as Magneto had underlined his ability to defy his years in an industry often so focused on the young. Now aged 76, he filmed scenes for the movie Mr Holmes, released last year, at Chatham’s Historic Dockyard – a movie which saw him portray the famous detective brought out of retirement for one final case. He’s a regular on the small screen too – most recently in the comedy alongside Derek Jacobi on ITV, Vicious – which met with somewhat contrasting critical reviews. And it seems he has no regrets over making the leap from stage to screen. “It’s easier to go from theatre to film than the other way round,” he explains, “In film you’re absolutely loved and cossetted and cared for. In film your director makes your performance. In theatre you’re carrying it all. But films appeal to me because I’m still intrigued by how to do them. I’m so pleased that I seem to be able to act in films, not waving and shouting too much, just to be heard in the gods.

“Friends tell me I used to always ask them why I was not in films,” he says. “Well, looking back, I know why now. It’s because my acting was so inappropriate for films. My professional pride was in being able to deliver a performance that would impact on people sitting in the gods as much as to people sitting in the front row – which would often alarm the people in the front row, particularly critics, who thought I was overacting. I wasn’t overacting to the people over there. But people would come to see it and think, we don’t want this guy in our movies.” In fact, while it would be easy to assume McKellen – knighted in 1991 – has been lighting up the big screen for decades, it was in fact only in the 1990s that he made a major transition to cinema. Prior to that, stage was his love. From his first performance in 1959 in Henry VI – alongside the likes of Terry Nunn and longtime friend Derek Jacobi – he began professional work two years later, before touring in regional theatre and finally reaching the West End. a

In 1965 he was part of Laurence Olivier’s National Theatre Company at London’s Old Vic, and during the 1970s and 80s he became one of the London stage’s best known and most admired performers. But it was in the following decade he started picking up more major movie roles and has never looked back. He was in the Da Vinci Code, and nominated for an Academy Award in 1998’s Gods and Monsters – an achievement he repeated as Gandalf in Lord of the Rings. So how has he found the leap to being instantly recognisable? “Because Gandalf and Magneto are rather imposing characters,” he explains, “people don’t take advantage of you. They’re a little bit in awe, in a way that they wouldn’t be if they saw a friendly face from Coronation Street. People on television have trouble with fame, because audiences think they’re their mates.” And he’s played some unusual roles since. Most notably in real life, perhaps, becoming an ordained minister for the Universal Life Church so he could preside, in 2013, over the marriage of his friend and fellow actor, Patrick Stewart – best known for his role in Star Trek: The Next Generation and the X Men movies. McKellen himself is a confessed atheist – the Universal Church one that believes only in doing ‘what is right’. a

A long-time campaigner for equal rights for the lesbian and gay communities, he admits for many years he kept his sexuality a secret – only ‘coming out’ publicly in 1988 at the age of 49. “I regret and always shall that I didn’t see the significance of coming out at a much earlier date because I think I would have been a different person and a happier one. “Self-confidence is the most important thing that anybody can have. You don’t have that if part of you is ashamed or hiding something. “I think up to that point, I had been using acting as a disguise - somewhere where I could express my emotions, and draw attention to myself in a way that I didn’t particularly want to do in real life. “Acting became not about disguise, but about telling the truth. And my emotions became much freer. I was able to act better as I think you are able to do any job. Everyone’s better if they’re being honest. “I have been reluctant to lobby on other issues I most care about – nuclear weapons (against), religion (atheist), capital punishment (anti), AIDS (fund-raiser) because I never want to be forever spouting, diluting the impact of addressing my most urgent concern; legal and social equality for gay people worldwide.” Today, Sir Ian McKellen is a much loved elder statesman of the acting profession – but one with a ready wit and a youthful approach. As a consequence, it would not be a surprise to see his remaining years deliver yet more memorable performances which stand the test of time. mmm

• Dig in a 5cm or more layer of compost or well rotted manure into your beds to prepare for the growing season. You can also work in a general purpose fertiliser such as pelleted chicken manure or fish, blood and bone. • Apply a layer of mulch around your perennials, trees and shrubs before the hot weather arrives. Use organic matter such as well rotted manure. • Feed trees, shrubs and hedges with a balanced, slow-release fertiliser by lightly forking it into the soil surface. Roses are greedy plants and will greatly benefit from feeding as they come into growth. • Lift and divide perennial plants now to improve their vigour and create new plants for your garden. • You can start to move evergreen shrubs and trees now, provided the soil isn’t frozen or waterlogged. • Plant summer-flowering bulbs such as Lilies, Gladiolus and Ranunculus into beds, borders and containers. • Forced flower bulbs such as hyacinths and daffodils, which have now finished flowering, can be planted outdoors in garden borders. • If any of your garden plants will need supporting this year, put the supports in now so the plants can grow up through them. Adding supports afterwards is difficult and may damage the plant. • Check any tree ties to make sure the tie is not cutting into the trunk. Loosen any that are tight to allow the trunk room to expand. • Prune your Penstemons now - cut all the old shoots back to the base provided there is new growth at the bottom of the plant. If there are no new shoots at the base, cut just above the lowest set of leaves. • If you haven’t done so already, finish cutting back any dead foliage left on your perennials and ornamental grasses to make way for new growth. • Check that your container plants are not drying out - warm weather will quickly affect soil moisture levels. a

LOCAL MAN WHO MADE MEDICAL HISTORY RUNS MARATHON TO SAVE MORE LIVES Norman Grimes, 57, from Gravesend is becoming a lifesaver for the second time as he prepares to run the Virgin Money London Marathon for blood cancer charity Anthony Nolan. Joanna had aplastic anaemia and was given weeks to live before Norman was found to be a match through the newly established Anthony Nolan register. Norman went on to meet Shirley Nolan, who founded the register, and his pioneering transplant experience was featured in medical journals. Norman, a leadership trainer, is now training to run his ninth marathon for Anthony Nolan in April. He said: ‘I was very privileged to be a donor at the very beginning and it’s given my life an enormous amount of meaning – no matter what else I do I know I’ve made a difference to someone. I’m hoping to raise £2,000 by running the marathon to help

recruit as many people as possible to the Anthony Nolan register.’ Kirsty Low, head of events at Anthony Nolan, said: ‘Norman is one of our original lifesavers and has gone on to become a dedicated fundraiser for the charity. This year, Norman will be running to save lives, mile by mile. ‘The money he raises will help us recruit more people onto the donor register to make sure we can find a match for everyone who needs a transplant.’ Norman has previously run eight marathons in London and Paris, raising an estimated £12,000 for Anthony Nolan. He added: ‘I think the support from Anthony Nolan is stupendous. The marathon cheer groups are amazing - when you’re nearly at the end and dead on your feet you see an enormous group of people cheering for you. It’s wonderful and the encouragement makes all the difference.’

DOVER MP VISITS REGENERATION PROJECT Regeneration was on the agenda in Dover when local MP Charlie Elphicke visited Barratt Homes’ Aylesham Village development to see how work is progressing on the new garden village. Barratt Homes and Persimmon Homes are building 1,210 new homes together with community facilities and improved transport links as part of the overall plans for Aylesham Garden Village. Original plans for the village were drawn up by renowned architect Sir Patrick Abercrombie, who was the advocate for the then popular ‘garden city movement’. During his visit Charlie Elphicke was given a tour of the site and learnt more about the overall plans for the development which has already proved successful with buyers in the region. Already the entire first phase of Barratt’s homes have been sold off-plan, which the house builder’s

24-HOUR FUND-RAISING MARATHON IS RIGHT ON CUE A fleet administrator at Swale Heating has organised and played in a 24-hour pool marathon to raise money for Kent, Surrey and Sussex air ambulance. Josh Barker chose the charity after the air ambulance saved the life of a friend involved in a car crash. He and seven other friends played pool non-stop at their club in Rushenden, Isle of Sheppey, raising almost £1,450 in sponsorship from families, friends and colleagues. They played doubles for the whole 24 hours, using two pool tables, and Josh says there were times it was difficult to keep going. “The main struggle was lack of sleep but also just being on our feet for 24 hours. We had lots of Red Bull to keep us going!”

It is the first time Josh has ever taken part in a fund-raising event but says this was an important cause. “When our friend was involved in the car crash, if it wasn’t for the air ambulance rushing him to hospital, he probably wouldn’t have made it so we decided to raise the money for that reason.” Family-owned Swale Heating – the South East’s largest independent heating installer – has a tradition of encouraging fund-raising among its staff and of supporting the local community. Sales Manager Luke Mantoura says: “Swale Heating recently won an award for helping young jobless people on Sheppey and a group of our ladies in the Contracts Department completed Race for Life last year. APPLY FOR A SHARE IN GRANT FUNDING Organisations across Kent are invited to apply for grants worth £200 to £25,000 from one of the country’s oldest charities. The Rochester Bridge Trust has opened a new round of grant schemes for 2016 and welcomes applications related to heritage structures; history and agriculture; the River Medway; and civil engineering, including education projects. Bridge Clerk Sue Threader explained: “The Trust’s main purpose is to provide crossings of the River Medway, however, when funds allow our trustees are able to offer a range of grants. “We particularly welcome applications to fund well-planned projects from sound and wellgoverned organisations. “In the past, these have ranged from supporting a primary school’s construction club to providing funds towards Medway Aircraft Preservation Society’s ongoing restoration of the Short Scion Floatplane.” Applications are welcome from areas associated with the Rochester Bridge Trust: the historic county of Kent; Hassocks in West Sussex; Springthorpe, Somerby and Corringham in Lincolnshire; and Holme and Conington in Cambridgeshire.

NO. 500 SQUADRON Royal Auxiliary Air Force IN THE FIRST OF TWO ARTICLES ROBIN J BROOKS LOOKS AT THE PAST HISTORY OF NO. 500 (COUNTY OF KENT) SQUADRON, ROYAL AUXILIARY AIR FORCE A Vickers Virgina over Kent

t was at Manston on March 15th, 1931 that the squadron was formed. It carried the privilege of bearing the first number ever allocated to a Special Reserve Squadron together with the official badge bearing the white horse of Kent and the Latin inscription ‘Quo Fata Vocent’ meaning ‘whither the fates may call’. Within weeks the first of several Vickers Virginia bombers and two Avro 504N trainers arrived to be greeted by the Mayors of Margate and Ramsgate. Firmly established, an intense recruiting campaign began to attract Men of Kent and Kentish Men to join the squadron. By January 1st, 1933 the manpower strength had increased sufficiently to allow the first summer camp to take place at Tangmere in Sussex. Returning to Manston the squadron co-operated in exercises with the local territorial army units as rumbles of another war with Germany became prevalent. 1938 saw a deterioration in the international situation. The squadron were put on a war footing and left Manston to go to Detling near Maidstone where they would be stationed until 1941. They re-equipped with the Avro Anson, a twin engine reconnaissance/light bomber aircraft. With conversion to the type beginning immediately, it was none too soon as September 1939 approached and the talk was of total war. The personnel of the squadron listened on Sunday

September 3rd to the wireless as the Prime Minister, Neville Chamberlain stated: ‘I have to tell you now that no such undertaking has been received and that consequently this country is at war with Germany’. The Anson’s were armed and bombed up ready to carry out some of the first bombing attacks on the enemy held harbours along the French coast. Though the aircraft were obsolete and far from practical for the job intended, the crews carried out their duties in bad conditions to the best of their ability. The weather was the main enemy and with Detling sitting on top of the North Downs, fog was often the problem with returning aircraft finding difficulty in locating the airfield. The Christmas of 1939/1940 saw one of the worst winters ever. With snow and ice being the main problem it was difficult to fly any sorties. The first few months of 1940 saw many incidents resulting in the loss of aircraft and crews, one of the worst being over the night of May 30th /31st. On that night an Anson was forced to return to Detling when the bomb release mechanism refused to work. Landing with a bomb load was very dangerous and with one engine stopped through lack of fuel, this danger was amplified. Problems also became apparent with the undercarriage forcing the pilot to crash-land the aircraft on its belly. It was a bad landing, the impact of which killed the navigator. As the aircraft burst into flames two of the crew a HISTORY FEATURE

managed to get themselves out but realised that the pilot was unconscious in his seat. Hearing the crash Corporal Daphne Pearson, a medical orderly, pulled on her Wellington boots and rushed to the crash scene. Realising that the pilot had not got out she entered the cockpit, released the straps and pulled Pilot Officer Bond away from the aircraft. Minutes later the bombs on board exploded just as Corporal Pearson jumped into a ditch and placed her tin helmet on the pilots head. But for her heroism Pilot Officer Bond would have lost his life. For this act of bravery she was awarded the Empire Gallantry Medal which was later exchanged for the George Medal. With the Battle of Britain raging overhead and the threat of an invasion to come in the autumn, the work of 500 Squadron increased to include mine spotting in the Channel, escorting shipping together with attacks on known German barge positions along the French coast. One of the highlights for the squadron that year was when the Anson’s were fitted with extra machine guns. These were placed along the fuselage to fire through the glazed windows with supports manufactured by the Maidstone company of Tilling-Stevens. Later in the year at the instigation of the armament officer, Flight Lieutenant Harold Jones, a very large 20mm cannon was installed in the middle of the fuselage. When fired rearwards it was said it added at least another five knots to the speed of the Anson. August 13th, 1940 saw a devastating raid on Detling in which the squadron lost many personnel and several aircraft. A large force of JU87 ‘Stuka’ dive- bombers attacked the airfield at around teatime causing several hangars to burst into flames at the same time as a direct hit on the semi-sunk operations room killed several personnel including the Commanding Officer of Detling, Group Captain Edward Davis, when a piece of concrete pierced his skull. In addition 67 men and women were killed with over a hundred injured. It became known as Detling’s blackest day. There were moments of bravery by the WAAF’s with Military Medals going to Corporal Josie Fairclough and Sergeant Youle. 1941 saw much of the damage of the previous year renewed. In April the squadron converted to the Bristol Blenheim and moved to Bircham Newton in Norfolk. Accepting responsibility for North Sea operations they took on the additional role of air sea rescue at the same time attacking the German freighters that were hugging the Dutch coast. A conversion from the Blenheim to the American Lockheed Hudson took the squadron in to new realms of armament. With fixed twin .303 machine guns in the nose, twin .303 machine guns in a dorsal turret and one .303 gun in a ventral position plus a top speed of 246mph, success for the squadron took a leap forward. In March ‘B’ Flight were detached to Limavady in Northern Ireland to help combat the U-boat menace whilst the rest of the squadron moved to Stornaway in the Outer Hebrides. now became the main duty of the squadron but a move to St Eval and then Portreath in Cornwall heralded a change as the aircraft were painted white to suit the environment in which they would now be carrying out operations. On November 5th, 1942 500 Squadron said goodbye to England and nine white Hudsons flew from Portreath to Gibraltar to commence operations over North Africa. Further deployments took the squadron to the Mediterranean and Italy with 500 seeing the end of the war whilst part of the Desert Air Force. On August 25th, 1945 the Air Officer Commanding Desert Air Force, Air-Vice Marshall Whitford paid a visit to the squadron and congratulated them on playing a decisive part in defeating the enemy. This ended a cherished career during which members of the squadron were awarded three Distinguished Service Orders – 21 Distinguished Flying Crosses and one Bar to a DFC – one George Cross – nine Distinguished Flying Medals and 25 Mentioned in Despatches. Although the war was over, it was announced that No. 500 (County of Kent) Squadron, Royal Auxiliary Air Force would re-form as part of the peace-time air force and would be based at West Malling in Kent. In June 1946 the squadron became a night fighter unit equipped with the De Havilland Mosquito NF30. On August 14th, 1948 they received the first of the Gloster Meteor jet powered aircraft being the first squadron to do so. The role now changed to that of a day fighter unit as they now became known as ‘the weekend flyers’. War reared its ugly head once more in 1951 when the Korean crisis erupted and in common with all the other auxiliary squadrons, 500 were called up for six months full time service. When it was established that the situation was not as originally envisaged, they returned to their weekend flying. With Sir Anthony Eden accepting the role of Honorary Air Commodore, 1954 was a significant year when the squadron won the coveted ‘Cooper Trophy’. This was an annual award given to the auxiliary squadron which had shown the greatest overall efficiency throughout the year. In 1955 and 1956 they won the ‘Esher’ Trophy’ for the best squadron but sadly this did not change the mind of the government of the day when it was announced that all the auxiliary squadrons would be disbanded by March 1957. It was a bitter blow but holding their heads high, a unique ceremony was held at Maidstone Army Barracks on Saturday September 21st, 1963 when the squadron was re-mustered for one day to receive the Standard from Sir Anthony Eden. The Standard was then paraded through Maidstone High Street to All Saints Church where it rests today. The squadron may have disappeared from the Royal Air Force Order of Battle but it will never be forgotten. HANAMI BLOSSOM FESTIVAL, BROGDALE COLLECTIONS, FAVERSHAM, 16TH APRIL Visit the Hanami Blossom Festival in Faversham to picnic under the blossom, tour the orchards, view the traditional Japanese tea ceremony and enjoy Japanese drumming. Spot them to the far left and right of the property’s woods which are also bursting with other wild flowers from wooden anemones, red campion Greater stitchwort and cookoo flower to common violet, white and red dead-nettle and yellow archangel, all trying to establish themselves before the tree canopy closes. Before the bluebells emerge, the woodland lays down a dapple carpet of wooden anemones. These are low lying white or pinkish petal-like sepals, which close overnight to protect them from the frost and open again in the gentle spring sunlight. In the garden, made world famous by its creators Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson, the wall flowers, tulips and narcissus are ablaze in the cottage garden and along lime walk. On March 14th 2016 fish sourcing company Chapman’s held a launch event for their new processing facility in Borough Green. Now 25 years old, Chapman’s are the premier fish sourcing company in the South East. They have forged close connections with local fishermen to collect catches straight from the boats, transport it to Borough Green and move it on to their clients within hours. Thanks to their consistent delivery, high-quality product and responsible sourcing policy they now serve some of the most prestigious restaurants in the South East and London.
