Welcome

hances are you’ll be reading this before or just after you’ve been on your annual holiday – but here’s the good news; the fun days out don’t need to stop now. The summer brings with it a festival and event season right here in Kent. Plus, if you’ve been away – or simply been enjoying the sunny days here – it’s the perfect opportunity to get out and about and top up that tan. Thousands, for example, flocked to a sundrenched Whitstable for its famous oyster festival at the end of last month, as well as music festivals such as LeeFest near Tunbridge Wells. Not to mention the annual Leeds Castle Classical Concert which was a great success. And I joined the 80,000 visitors at the Kent County Show in Detling in July which was another fabulous day, showcasing all the greatest things about this great county. This month there’s everything from military shows at Paddock Wood’s Hop Farm to the open air rock show by Canadian rocker Bryan Adams in Canterbury. Speaking of which, inside this month’s edition, we take an in-depth look at his career ahead of his headlining performance – his first ever show in the county. While we’re on the issue of stars, we also profile Eva Green – the Bond girl turned superstar who is perhaps best known now for her role in Sky’s Penny Dreadful. Did you know she spent some of her childhood right here in Kent? Turn inside to find out more. We’ve also got special features on gardens and bathrooms, plus the ideal starting point if you’re planning to tie the knot soon, with a wedding section too. And while you’re enjoying this month’s edition, I’d like to send out a very special thank you to all our advertisers – without whom we would not be here. We continue to grow as a result of them and we work hard to keep serving up a product they want to be associated with. So enjoy this edition, enjoy the summer weeks, and enjoy this fabulous county of ours.

(EVERYTHING HE DOES)

He Does For Us

HE’S SOLD MILLIONS, GIVEN AWAY MILLIONS AND NOW HE’S PLAYING RIGHT HERE IN KENT...MEET BRYAN ADAMS

CELEBRITY STORY

F

or those who can remember the summer of 1991, a certain Canadian rock star was impossible to avoid. Bryan Adams was everywhere...his song (Everything I Do) I Do It For You was released in June and climbed its way to the top by July 1st. And there it stayed, stubbornly refusing to budge for a colossal four months. It was only drowned out by the smashing of records as it became the longest ever UK number one single for consecutive weeks at the top. And for 16 weeks he stayed. It is a record which remains intact to this day and in the fast-paced world of single releases it is hard to see its remarkable feat being matched any time soon. It sold, in the UK alone, in excess of 1.8million copies. And you weren’t safe from Adams in the cinema either. The song was plucked from the soundtrack of Kevin Costner’s blockbuster Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves. Between them they dominated sound and vision. Yet to think that Bryan Adams is something of a one-trick pony would be to sell a remarkable career hideously short. In fact, unlike many other performers whose one big hit dominates and colours the rest of their career, Adams almost shrugged off its success and continued to do what he had been doing for years before and ever since – simply delivering some classic rock tracks. From the raw early sound of his eponymous debut in 1980 to the classics Cut Like A Knife and, in many’s eyes still his greatest album, 1985’s Reckless, to 1996’s 18 Til I Die and plenty more in between and since, he has racked up dozens of hits across a career which stretches back to 1976. And he has toured relentlessly – selling out the O2 Arena in London earlier this year.

mmm 11

During his career he’s sold close to 70 million records worldwide and, perhaps his most impressive feat is coming across as a regular, kind-hearted, human being. A rarity in the world of superstars. He’s an accomplished photographer too. Not to mention a family man – he has two daughters with longtime partner Alicia Grimaldi, 35, who is a co-founder and trustee of his charity foundation. But for many in the county this month marks a day to remember, when he steps out for the latest open air show at Canterbury’s Spitfire Ground St Lawrence. Normally the home of Kent County Cricket Club, it is fast developing a reputation for bringing classic acts to Kent. Earlier this year Simply Red performed in the footsteps of the likes of Madness and Elton John. Touring his latest studio – his 13th, Get Up! - it is sure to be a huge success with a set list likely to include hits such as Run To You, Heaven, Can’t Stop This Thing We Started, The Only Thing That Looks Good On You Is Me, Somebody and, of course, that monster hit from 1991. What many will not be aware of, though, as he steps out on to the stage is that the 56-yearold is far more than your average rock star. Over his career he has donated millions of dollars to good causes. A vegan since he was 29, he’s also a fierce supporter of animal rights movements. He has his own charity – the Bryan Adams Foundation – which he established in 2006 with the aim of transforming the lives of thousands of people. It was set up shortly after the tsunami disaster which struck southern Asia and aims to provide financial grants to support projects committed to bettering the lives of other people. Its goal particularly is to advance education and learning opportunities for children and young people worldwide, believing that an education is the best gift that a child can be given. a CELEBRITY STORY

I had difficulty with it and used to argue with my manager all the time about some of these press things that would come up. I would shun the limelight completely and didn’t really want to be out there. Laughing at it is key; if you can laugh at yourself, you never cease to be amused. Continued from page 11

Adams provides the funds. He’s been romantically linked, in the past to the likes of super model Elle Macpherson and even Princess Diana – but refuses to discuss any of it. “My love life,” he explains, “is no one’s business but my own.” It’s tough not to like this guy. “I really wanted to be a working musician. The craft was everything to me. To be a celebrity — I couldn’t think of anything more cringeworthy,” he says looking back at his career which started when he famously signed his first record deal for the grand total of $1 (a cheque he still has), but agreed, to allow the then-budding songwriter to “get a foot in the door” of the highly competitive music industry. “I had difficulty with it and used to argue with my manager all the time about some of these press things that would come up. I would shun the limelight completely and didn’t really want to be out there. Laughing at it is key; if you can laugh at yourself, you never cease to be amused.” Today he lives, primarily, in London and has dual British and Canadian citizenship. A return to his family’s roots you could say. Born in November 1959 in Kingston, Ontario, both his parents were British. They emigrated to Canada before having their two sons. His father served both the British and Canadian armies and his early life was spent following his father’s postings as a diplomat, which saw him spend time in Portugal, Austria and Israel. Disrupted by his globe-trotting, he left school at 15. Two years later he was working in and around the music scene of Vancouver, Canada.  CELEBRITY STORY

Hen Party Weekend Ideas

A

restorative spa weekend could be just the ticket to comfort a busy bride to be, let yourself and others be impressed by a selection of treatments, a nail bar, gym and pools. They can offer sumptuous meals, afternoon tea and plenty of wine, make sure there is a cocktail bar too. In an party-like atmosphere, set up a perfect day of total relaxation and chitchat by the pool.

Afternoon tea experience

Treat yourself to endless rounds of dainty sandwiches, exquisite cakes and biscuits and pretty teas and coffees are supplemented with nibbles in a comfortable and traditional environment. Make sure you book with a restaurant or hotel that specialises in afternoon tea with a scrumptious menu.

White water rafting

If throwing yourself and your bridal team down the rapids is something you think you could all bond over, or your bride-to-be is a fitness enthusiast, then perhaps a white water rafting package could be the perfect hen party choice. While not everyone will jump at the chance, it definitely tops the list as a memorable day out.

Flower arranging workshop

After all the bouquet samples you’ve undoubtedly become acquainted with in the lead-up to the special day, it’s only natural to develop an interest in the art itself. Gather the bridal team either in the comfort of your own home or at your hen party hotel suite for a lesson in flower arranging. You can pick the flowers and the type of arrangement you want to create – and if you’re planning ahead can even create a personalised

wedding bouquet. A fun hen idea that’s also future mother-in-law proof.

Charter a yacht

Crystal-clear waters and white sand beaches, an ideal place anyone would fancy spending your hen weekend. Charter a yacht with your best friends, a great place to go to would be Sardinia. Where you can set sail around islands with the warm sun, enjoy snorkelling and have lunch on the deck. Then head back to shore for a cocktail. mmm

Jewellery to last a lifetime T

he world of bridal jewellery this year is promising to be a familiar one with the most popular trend of last year, vintage, promised to continue. Lace bridal dresses and the frequent use of pearls will continue to grace couples as they say their vows, but the catwalk trends are slowly changing and here’s some of the hottest new looks for the year ahead.

Art Deco

Think geometrics, especially amongst rings. Inspired by “The Great Gatsby”, one of the most popular films towards the end of 2013, statement earrings and quirky patterns will be sure to adorn the aisles this year.

Champagne

Not so much the drink - although we can probably guarantee that this will be included somewhere in the wedding - it’s the colour that we are talking about. Dresses, bracelets and necklaces are taking on a minimalist approach and a deeper champagne colour for this year.

Motifs

In the form of animals and flowers, motifs are said to be popular this year with their inclusion in a lot more of the minor details of the wedding. mmm

Hot Summer Wedding Trends

S

ummer is a popular time for weddings, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with the summer wedding tradition standbys. mmm gives you some fresh ideas for your summer celebration.

Dynamic Colours

Bright hues are popular for summer weddings. But if you try to use too many colours in one space, you might wind up with a look that’s more carnival than nuptial. Think sophisticated brights. Sticking with just two hues will keep your space unified. Rather than splashing colour all over your reception space, use one dynamic colour for a strong statement, think all-pink centrepieces or bold orange table linens. This holds especially true for your centrepieces: Instead of multicoloured centrepieces, use alternate single-colour floral arrangements for a pulled-together look.

Laid-back Music

It’s summer, so why not lighten the ambience a little? A pianist or string trio will do the trick if you’re having a formal cocktail hour, but to really embrace the season, think about alternative summery music styles. Create a laid-back vibe during your cocktail hour and dinner with steel drums or a singer accompanied with a ukulele. For the reception, heat up the evening with sultry sounds -- we love the idea of incorporating classic swing or big band music to add a fast, upbeat tempo to the evening.

New Themes

Basic beach or garden themes are classic for the summer. Instead of a generic setting or theme, take the personal route. Think of your favourite summer hangouts when planning your theme. Rather than just any beach, bring in elements specific to the beach you remember as a child. If it was a cabin in the woods, go for a mountain theme. Another idea: Honour your honeymoon destination. If you’re having a garden wedding but honeymooning in Hawaii, add orchids to your bouquets or fill the bottoms of your centrepiece vases with black lava rocks.

Natural Centrepieces

Cut citrus fruit is a tried-and-true favourite for summertime centrepieces, but other options out there are more unexpected and just as visually appealing. Love fruit but want something new? Have your florist use hollowed-out watermelons as a centrepiece container for a casual look that’s fun and seasonal. Another option is to go natural and green with your containers. Incorporate wooden vases or pedestals with grass or moss to give centrepieces a textured, natural feel.

Beyond Wedding Cake

White wedding cakes are popular for every season, and of course, chocolate always reigns for groom’s cakes. But with cake bakers nowadays offering so many delectable flavours and fillings, why not try a seasonal selection? Get inspired by the summer flavours you loved as a child. Think fresh strawberries and whipped cream filling for a strawberry shortcake-style wedding cake, or a citrus-infused filling like Key lime, lemon, or orange vanilla butter cream that honours a summertime fruit.

Eco-Friendly Favours

Classic summer favours like flip-flops and drink koozies will always satisfy, but why not give back to the planet while you give back to your guests? Eco-friendly favours are bigger than ever, particularly if you’re taking advantage of natural beauty and marrying outdoors. One idea: Give guests locally grown herbs planted in recyclable glass jars or tin cans. Dressed up with ribbon or paper in your wedding colours, they’re gorgeous and good for the earth. Beyond plants, you might also consider donating to a local charity for a wedding favour idea that never goes out of season.

Wine Smoothies

Your guests will definitely want something cold and frosty, but margaritas and daiquiris can be had at any summertime bar. Instead, go for a libation that’s a little out of the ordinary. Wine smoothies are cold, frosty, and pack less of an alcoholic punch than margaritas. Perfect for your cocktail hour and as a signature drink for the evening, ask your caterer about serving one of these concoctions. A wine smoothie consists of a fruity wine, like rose, blended with ice and fruits of your choice. Garnished with a couple of berries or fruit slices, it makes for a refreshing and unexpected signature sip. mmm

Hosting your wedding outdoors

S

ummer is in full bloom. The sun, the gentle breeze, the cocktails with lunch and all the barbecues, summer might be the favourite season; it may even inspire you to try hosting your wedding outdoors. Here’s everything that you’ll need to know for an al fresco wedding day.

The perfect setting

Getting married outside is a perfect suggestion. If you’re going for a free, natural and chilled theme for your big day, then an outdoor wedding is for you. These weddings aren’t stuffy and boring; they’re out in the fresh air, giving you the freedom to do whatever you like. Unlike a church ceremony, you can decorate most outdoor venues any way you want, making them some of the most versatile venues you can find. A great suggestion is getting married al fresco, all the pressure and your worries will just melt away.

Get creative

Unfortunately, in the UK you can only get married in places that have a wedding licence and too few venues have an additional outdoor wedding venue. This leaves couples with a choice to make, they can either give up on their dream of getting married in the beautiful,

lush countryside or they can get creative. They could get married in a registry office, having a ceremony with their friends and family at a later date. They also can find a venue that has one of these licenses, one such venue is the gorgeous Leeds Castle.

The perfect setting

Many outdoor venues include a wooden gazebo, a truly adorable feature. This is not only an amazing photo opportunity, but it’s also incredibly practical. You probably want to be able to see the one you love on your big day, but you might not be able to if you’re squinting from the light of the sun. The cute little gazebo can help to keep the sun out of your eyes and keep you cool in the shade! This is so much better than wearing sunglasses, because you can still stare lovingly into their eyes.

Have a back up

Summer is always shown as a time for festivals, pool parties and perfect beaches. The British Summer time, however, is just as rainy as it is sunny, so it’s important to have a back up planned. Many venues with an outdoor venue also have an indoor area, often for the reception. Before you book an outdoor venue, ask if you can use the indoor venue; hopefully it won’t rain on your big day, but you never know with the UK weather.

Enjoy the day

Whether you’re thinking about using a mystical castle, a rustic farm or an adorable gazebo, you are going to have some fantastic photos from the big day! So go forth and enjoy your outdoor wedding next summer, come rain or shine. mmm

Create the perfect wedding photos

W

e’ve all seen amazing photos gracing the pages of magazines and of course that is what we all want. So here are some tips on how you can achieve the perfect wedding photos.

Getting started

Choosing a great photographer is an obvious start. It’s important to really like their work, but also to like the photographer too as they will be with you all day on your wedding day! It can be a good idea to have a pre-wedding shoot, this will really help you get used to being in front of the camera and therefore you will be much more relaxed in your photos. It’s great to practice poses and see what works for you and just as important, what doesn’t work.

The perfect picture

Now everything has come together, you have a stunning venue, a great photographer and have practiced your posing, its time for the perfect picture. What makes amazing photos is great light. Photographers call the hour before sunset the golden hour, it’s when the light is softer and more flattering. So leave some time on your wedding day for photos later in the day, to make the most of the best light. And don’t worry about bad weather; a good photographer will create their own light!

The poser

When it comes to posing there are a few little rules that can make the difference between a good photo and a great photo. We say “If it bends, then bend it, all that means is bend your leg instead of standing up straight, bend your elbow to create a bit of space between your body and arm. Bend your head slightly to one side. All of this makes for a more dynamic pose (just like the models in the magazines).

And finally...

Then all you have to do is enjoy yourself with the person you have just married. Capturing the chemistry between you is what will make the perfect picture. For more information visit www.jeffoliver.co.uk

JAPAN

inspirational attractions

O

pen a world map and you will see the extensive Asia/ Pacific region. Almost at the very centre you will observe the Japanese archipelago stretching north to south along the edge of the Asian continent. Japan has lured an untold number of adventurers, since Marco Polo first introduced it to the world back in the 13th century as “Zipangu- the Land of Gold”. Though the Japan of today may not be a land of gold, the “Neo Zipangu” does possess powerful and magnet-like attractions: great cultural variety, colourful and inspiring natural attractions beautifully interwoven by four distinct seasonal changes, not to mention the overflowing hospitality of its people. As such Japan has recovered from the natural disasters of 2011, and is vigorously gaining in popularity as a tourist destination again which anyone can enjoy on a reasonable budget, and with a sense of complete security. This is where the past literally greets the future. This is where they both mingle. Japan has a long history of absorbing advanced cultures from ancient times, through the middle ages. Later it began to assimilate elements of western civilisation from the latter half of the 19th century. Through these influences, the country has added rich new dimensions and depth to its indigenous culture. This marvellous harmony between the refinements of everything ‘Oriental’, blended with leading edge technology and the urban lifestyle you find in Japan today is truly proof of its long and eloquent history. a TRAVEL ASPECT

THE SEASONS

No other country has the contrasting seasons that Japan enjoys: If you are undecided when to visit Japan, spring is spectacular when the plum and cherry blossom trees burst into bloom, from the first days of February when the plum blossoms debut in Okinawa, to the last days of May, when the last cherry blossoms fall from the trees of northern Japan. Spring is a time of rebirth in the name of nature and human celebration throughout the land, with numerous flower festivals being held everywhere. Spring is one of the most popular times to travel and planning and booking early is imperative. Summer is playtime in the land of nature, a season of rice planting and total greenery, summer is a

season for visiting Mt Fuji, enjoying the fireworks almost every night and the large scale festivals that will linger through into September, but by October Japan is enjoying the crisp cooler days of its distinct autumn. Autumn brings swirls of changing leaves, vivid hues of crimson, gold, bronze and yellow that paint the hills and mountainsides in carpets of colour, a wonderful time to visit. The Momji maple tree turning a blazing red is not to be missed. Winter offers not only snowfall a skier’s paradise, but sunshine and blue skies as well as cheaper prices and a quieter time to travel. www.baldwinstravel.co.uk #HolidayInspirations #ExploreBC TRAVEL ASPECT

So when it comes to inspiring ski resorts British Columbia has something for everyone, here’s our pick of some of the top ski destinations to really get your ski legs twitching:

Simply superb in every way, Whistler offers 2 great mountains with a staggering 8,171 acres of skiable terrain and a one mile vertical rise, 12 alpine bowls, 3 glaciers, over 200 marked pistes for every level of skier and snowboarder and a world-renowned ski and snowboard school.

BRITISH COLUMBIA’S POWDER HIGHWAY

Not content with a single resort? BC’s Powder Highway is absolutely perfect for combining a couple of resorts for a North American twin- or even triple centre trip. “A trip on the Powder Highway should be top of every skiers bucket list, hire a car and take the ultimate road trip through these breath-taking mountains whilst fitting in some well-earned turns along the way,” commented Julie from Ski Independence.

FERNIE

At the southernmost end of the Powder Highway you’ll find a big mountain with a small-town, traditionally Canadian feel – you can either choose to stay in the mountain village for the convenience of ski-in/ski-out accommodation, or the nearby old mining town with its cool galleries, cafés and bars. Fernie’s 2,500 acres of terrain caters for all skiers and snowboarders, ranging from the gentle groomers on the lower slopes to some fantastic steep and deep higher up.

PANORAMA

For a great value family ski holiday in North America, it’s hard to beat Panorama. Located close to the border with Alberta approximately 2hrs30 minutes north of Fernie, this expansive area of over 2,800 acres has something to suit everyone – from gentle beginners’ slopes to excellent backcountry terrain. Lodging in Panorama is particularly good for families and the ski-in/skiout Panorama Condos offer great accommodation at an excellent price, including access to the resort’s massive outdoor pool and hot tub complex.

KICKING HORSE

Further north along the Powder Highway is Kicking Horse. Advanced skiers and boarders need look no further! Over 2,800 acres of breathtaking terrain, with 4,133 feet of challenging vertical and an abundance of powder, make Kicking Horse a mecca for powder hounds. Most who make the pilgrimage here do so for the adrenaline-inducing pitches of the resort’s bowls, chutes and glades. a TRAVEL ASPECT

SLOW AND STEADY wins the race HOW TO ACE YOUR FIRST 5K RUN

f you’ve recently signed up for a 5K run, congratulations, committing to a run is often the hardest part. But even with entry secured, you might be unsure of how to prep properly before the big day. Mmm provide easy steps to help get you to the starting line with a stride in your step. a FITNESS TIPS

Continued from page 51

CHOOSE A PURPOSE

Decide on what your goal is and keep that in mind during training and the race itself. If it’s to jump-start a fitness routine or lose weight, you may not be as concerned with your finish time. But if you want to beat a personal best or qualify for another race after your 5K run, make sure your training allows for this.

STAY MOTIVATED

Whether you decide to run a 5K race with a group or find a running companion to train with, a friend can help keep you accountable. Sharing your goals and scheduling running workouts together will help keep momentum up and ensure that you stay consistent — especially during those times when you feel low.

CREATE A TRAINING SCHEDULE

Sticking with a schedule will help you stay on track without overwhelming you physically. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to train so you can increase both mileage and time while still allowing the body time to rest. FITNESS TIPS

TRAIN IN THE RIGHT GEAR

Feeling comfortable during the race, and in training, is crucial to your success. Never race in gear — especially shoes — that you haven’t tested before. Run in clothing that is broken in that you know won’t ride up or cause blisters. If you need a new pair of trainers and have time to break them in before race day, go to a running specialty store to get a gait analysis and test the shoes out on a real track. Remember the saying “cotton is rotten” when dressing to train. It makes clothes heavy, sweaty, and wet.

DON’T DO TOO MUCH TOO FAST

Keep the old saying “slow and steady wins the race” in mind while training. It’s important to not push yourself too hard, too fast - you want to avoid injury so that you can actually get to the race. A good rule of thumb is to increase your mileage by no more than 10 percent each week. Jot down your plan and increase gradually. Motivation is key, but be careful it doesn’t drive you to bite off more than you can chew.

START STRONG, FINISH STRONG

Positive visualisation will help you before the race and during. While you train, picture yourself on the track and tune out any environmental factors. The race will be full of people running right alongside you, so the more you practice this technique, the better your performance will be on the big day. Keep your eyes on the prize as you complete your 5K run and keep all of the reasons you decided to do it circling in your head. This will help you feel even more accomplished as you cross the finish line. mmm

APPLES

Apple pie, apple butter, what’s autumn without apples? It turns out late summer is helped by a basket of these amazing fruits as well. This year is a great one for Ontario apples, which means that there are plenty already available. • Health benefits: Apples are low in calories; 100 g of fresh fruit slices provide just 50 calories. They, however, contain no saturated fats or cholesterol. Nonetheless, the fruit is rich in dietary fibre, which helps prevent absorption of dietaryLDL or bad cholesterol in the gut. The fibre also saves the colon mucous membrane from exposure to toxic substances by binding to cancercausing chemicals inside the colon.

FRUITS AND VEGETABLES

health benefits LOW IN CALORIES HIGH IN VITAMINS AND MINERALS

GARLIC

Garlic is an amazing way to add flavour to your food without adding calories, and autumn is the perfect time for it. As a bonus, it’s amazingly healthy: it’s been linked to cancer prevention in medical studies. And did you know that you can grow your own garlic? Conveniently enough, autumn is the perfect time to plant it. • Health benefits: Garlic is an excellent source of minerals and vitamins that are essential for optimum health. The bulbs are one of the richest sources of potassium, iron, calcium, magnesium, manganese, zinc, and selenium. Selenium is a heart-healthy mineral, and is an important cofactor for antioxidant enzymes within the body. Manganese is used by the body as a co-factor for the antioxidant enzyme, superoxide dismutase. Iron is required for red blood cell formation.

CUCUMBERS

Smoothies are delicious and can be very healthy, but they can also be expensive. In-season field cucumbers — sometimes called garden cucumbers — are an inexpensive way to add liquid and vitamins to your smoothies. They’re also great chopped and added to your salads, of course, or even sliced and eaten with a Greek yogurt dip. • Health benefits: They surprisingly have a high amount of vitamin K, which has been found to have a potential role in bone strength by promoting osteotrophic (bone mass building) activity. It also has established role in the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease by limiting neuronal damage in the brain.

mmm 61

BABY BOK

This Chinese vegetable — related to cabbage — is easy to find year round, but it’s great when you can get it fresh. You can actually grill it, which is a great way to use this vegetable while the weather is still good for eating al fresco, but you can expect to find it fresh well into the autumn. • Health benefits: Bok choy is one of the popular very low calorie leafy vegetables. Nonetheless, it is a very rich source of many vital phytonutrients, vitamins, minerals and health-benefiting antioxidants. As in other Brassica family vegetables, bok choy too contains certain anti-oxidant plant chemicals such as thiocyanates, indole-3-carbinol, lutein, zea-xanthin, sulforaphane and isothiocyanates. Together with dietary fibre and vitamins, these compounds help protect against breast, colon, and prostate cancers and help reduce LDL or “bad cholesterol” levels in the blood.

EGGPLANT

Vegetarian? Eggplant is a great way to add some “meaty” texture to your dishes. You can slice it and grill it, or cook it for a longer period of time to bulk up dishes like curry. The season for this vegetable, which comes in several different varieties, starts in August and continues into autumn. • Health benefits: The peel or skin (deep blue/purple varieties) of aubergine has significant amounts of phenolic flavonoid phyto-chemicals called anthocyanins. Scientific studies have shown that these anti-oxidants have potential health effects against cancer, ageing, inflammation, and neurological diseases.

NECTARINES

The peach season is coming to an end, but nectarines are here and that’s a pretty good replacement. Nectarines are actually the same species as peaches — the theory is that the nectarines are grown because of a recessive allele, and peaches from a dominant allele for fuzzy skin. You can eat them as is or add them to salads or desserts. • Health benefits: Fresh nectarines carry small amounts of vitamin C. 100 g provides 5.4 mg or about 9% of dailyrecommended levels. Vitamin-C has anti-oxidant effects and is required for connective tissue formation within the human body. Consumption of fruits rich in vitamin C helps the body develop resistance against infectious agents, and helps to scavenge harmful free radicals.

EVA GREEN Casting a spell over audiences EVA GREEN HAS BEEN A WITCH, AND A BOND GIRL BUT HOW DID SHE GO FROM PARIS, VIA KENT, TO SUPERSTARDOM?

E

va Green has rather cornered a particular market in the increasingly competitive world of acting...for she is the Queen of the Dark. She may have the looks to stop a supernatural stampede at 10 paces, but the truth is the 36-yearold is ploughing a particularly fertile furrow when it comes to characters who are, well, a little odd. She was a witch in 2007’s The Golden Compass, in 2009’s Womb, she cloned her dead boyfriend, in 2012 she was another witch in Tim Burton’s Dark Shadows, and, in 2014, a femme fatale in the sequel to Sin City. And just to reinforce that image, she plays Vanessa Ives who battles forces from the underworld in Sky’s successful Penny Dreadful series. It’s an impressive rise to fame for a woman born in France but who spent part of her childhood in Kent. Yet, she is perhaps best known as a Bond girl – appearing in 2006’s Casino Royale opposite Daniel Craig’s debut as 007 – as Vesper Lynd. But even then she is – spoiler alert – a double agent. “I will have to do more normal roles because I don’t want to be put in a box marked ‘weird witch’,” she says. “But there’s something fascinating in darkness. You learn about yourself as well by going to these extremes as an actor.” a

Continued from page 67

She’s certainly pushed the boundaries in a career which began in 2001 when she secured roles in key stage productions which, in turn led to her being spotted for a role in the controversial movie The Dreamers – which involved some graphic sex scenes and nudity. “When I did that film I was not aware when I was filming it that all the questions from journalists afterwards would only be about the nudity,” she says. “I was asked all these questions about the sex scenes. I don’t know why people make such a fuss. Sometimes I feel like I’m a porn actress.”

CELEBRITY STORY

She’s certainly put that behind her, with her role helping her secure a part in Ridley Scott’s Kingdom of Heaven two years later – a movie in which she starred alongside Canterbury’s Orlando Bloom. But it was Casino Royale which sent her career into the stratosphere. Perhaps more impressive is that she has continued to pursue a career not constantly dogged by that Bond girl tag. “I got very angry when people kept asking me, ‘What’s it feel like to be a Bond girl?’,” she explains, “As if I was soup. “At first, when they approached me to do the Bond film, I thought it would be me wearing a

bikini and being beautiful, so I said I wouldn’t audition. Then they sent me the script, and I saw that Bond was falling in love with my character—that she was sensitive and full of secrets. I could understand that. “And I had to die. I die in a lot of movies. I don’t know why—it’s one of the unusual things about my career. I guess it’s a big rehearsal for the inevitable.” Born in Paris – moments before her twin sister – acting was very much in her blood. Her mother was Marlene Jobert, a successful French actress who encouraged her daughter not to follow her into the profession. Explains Green: “She was a very, very successful actress who, at about 40, gave it up for writing children’s books and raising her children.” Her mother’s hey-day was in the late 1960s and early 1970s when her roles included appearing opposite Charles Bronson in Rider in the Rain. Adds Green: “She lost the desire. She knew that it’s a very tough profession and was worried that someone as gentle as me wouldn’t be able to deal with it. “She’s kind of appalled by what I do. Sometimes I get so worried about a part she’ll say, ‘don’t stress,’ but there was less competition in her day. She’ll discuss a role and we run through lines. She thinks acting is a terrible business and it’s true that it’s hard to depend on the judgment of other people all the a

time. You have to not take it personally, to be strong. “If I listened to my mother’s advice, I wouldn’t do anything. I tell her the story and she’s like: ‘Oh God! Why are you doing that?’ Why can’t you play something normal?’.” A naturally dark blonde – she has dyed her hair black since she was 15 – she attended the American University of Paris, an Englishspeaking institution, and spent time during her childhood at homes in Ramsgate, London and Ireland, before returning to Paris for drama school. It provided the platform from which she launched her hugely successful career. A career which has also seen her pick up lucrative model endorsements for the likes of Emporio Armani, Christian Dior and Lancôme. Since she was in her early 20s she’s lived in London – and while still considering France her homeland, she admits she now “even dreams in English”. a

As for her private life... well she likes to keep it just that. The tabloids have linked her in recent months with the director Tim Burton. “When people first meet me, they find me very cold...I keep myself at a distance, and I think that’s why I’m so drawn to acting. It allows me to wear a mask. “I guess people would be surprised to find out that I am a bit of a homebody. I do not like clubbing or going to wild parties. After a day of shooting, I love to come home and relax by the fire with a glass of wine and a good book. Boring, huh?” As for the future, she insists a permanent move to Hollywood is not on the cards. “My ambition,” she reveals, “is just to find a good script.” With her reputation now well established, chances are it will find her. mmm

CHOOSING A SHOWER

You can either have a shower over the bath or in a standalone cubicle. The key is to first consider the size of your bathroom. Modern technology in respect of the shower is now at the forefront. Function is as important as design.

CHOOSING A BATHROOM SINK AND WC Basins come in a vast array of shapes, sizes, materials and designs. They can be mounted on pedestals, stands, vanity units, counter tops, wall hung, inset or semi-inset. Likewise WCs come in all shapes, sizes and configurations.

BATHROOM STORAGE

Space is very often at a premium as bathrooms tend to be small. When planning a bathroom makeover, consider how much storage space you will need. Many brands offer a wide range of flexible storage solutions, but if your bathroom is a particularly awkward space

you could consider asking a local tradesman to build something bespoke for your bathroom. A vanity unit will give you instant cupboards for example. You may also use any recesses or windowsills for shelf storage, and storage baskets or wire racks for the corner of the bath to help keep toiletries tidy. a

A fresh coat of paint, for example, goes a long way in giving a dowdy bathroom the facelift it needs, especially when using current colour trends. Specialist tile paints can also give you a new look without the hassle and expense of re-tiling.

BATHROOM ACCESSORIES

Consider buying new curtains or blinds, perhaps adding a new shower curtain or panel or even putting down new flooring. Replacing the mirror and/or door handles can also make a difference, as can seemingly small touches such as new hand towels. GARDENING Summer late summer DISCOVER THE KEY THIS AUGUST TO SUCCESSFUL PLANTING IN YOUR GARDEN

W

ater thoroughly once or twice a week rather than little and often - this encourages plants to put down roots in search of water rather than coming up to the surface. Remember, though, that containers and hanging baskets need watering every day also sometimes even twice a day if it is hot and windy. For recently planted large shrubs or trees, leave a hose trickling around the base for an hour. The same goes for established plants in very dry periods - pay particular attention to camellias, rhododendrons, azaleas and hydrangeas which will abort next season’s flowers if they get too dry. Mulch around the roots when moist to help avoid this. Recently planted hedges are best watered with a trickle hose a length of old hose punctured with little holes left running for an hour or so. Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this must be kept clear or grass will prevent essential moisture getting through. Mulching with bark or compost will help. Water is a precious commodity - instigate good practices such as using kitchen and bath water (as long as it is neither too dirty, greasy nor full of detergent) for watering, collect rainwater in butts (available from the centre) and investigate ways to recycle water for your irrigation. Avoid using tap water for lime-hating plants such as camellias, rhododendrons and azaleas - they will not thank you for it! The key to successful planting, whether it be a shrub, tree, perennial or bedding plant is to water in well. Soak the rootball in a bucket until no air bubbles come to the surface, dig the planting hole, fill with water and allow to drain away. Place the plant in the hole, fill with soil, firm gently and water well with a watering can - this will give the plant a huge advantage over one planted with a dry rootball in a dry hole and watered only on the surface. a

• Water tubs and new plants if dry. • Deadhead faded flowers to encourage more and prolong the flowering period. • Cut back delphiniums to encourage second flush of flowers and give them a feed after cutting back. • Summer is also the best time to tackle perennial weeds when they are growing. Either by digging out or applying a weed killer, which can be more practical, especially for larger areas. • Mulch around shrubs, roses and trees to help prevent moisture loss and suppress weeds. • Pinch out leading shoots on chrysanthemums and helianthuses to encourage bushy plants. • Leyland cypress hedging can be clipped as necessary during the growing season. • Start collecting seed for plants you wish to grow next year such as calendula, love-in-the-mist and poppy. • Fill gaps in borders with annuals. • Prune June flowering shrubs like philadelphus and weigela after flowering. • Liquid feed containers. • Check for green fly and black fly on young shoots or stems.

HOW TO KEEP YOUR

home cool this Summer EXPLORE ENVIRONMENTALLY FRIENDLY ALTERNATIVES TO AIR CONDITIONING

s the temperature rises, so does the cost of cooling your home, especially if you use an air conditioner. It is the best way to keep your home cool during the summer and to help keep the temperature down, but there are other options that don’t raise your energy bill quite as significantly. You may be cooling your home, but the fossil fuels you’re burning in the process are only making your summers hotter. This summer, leave the air conditioner in storage and try these environmentally-friendly alternatives instead.

A

FANS AND CEILING FANS

If you’re looking for ways to beat the heat, a ceiling fan can be a great investment for your home. This one appliance can make a room feel 6 or 7 degrees cooler, and even the most power-hungry fan costs less than £10 a month to use if you keep it on for 12 hours a day. Useful fans make it possible for you to raise your thermostat setting and save on air-conditioning costs. They don’t use much energy, but when air is circulating it feels much cooler. Ceiling fans are best, but a good portable fan can be very effective as well. Make sure to remember that even mild air movement of 1mph can make you feel three or four degrees cooler. Also make sure your ceiling fan is turned for summer, you should feel the air blown downward.

CURTAINS SHADES OR BLINDS

Install white window curtains, shades, or blinds to reflect heat away from the house. Close blinds, shades and curtains facing the sun to help keep the sun’s heat out and help fans or air conditioners cool more efficiently. Always remember that the best way to keep your home cool is to keep the heat out. SUMMER HOMES

INTERNAL HEAT

The most common sources of internal heat gain are: appliances, electronic devices, and lighting. Be aware from where the heat is coming. If you have air conditioning be sure to use it wisely. Don’t put lamps, televisions or other heat-generating appliances next to your air-conditioning thermostat, because the heat from these appliances will cause the air conditioner to run longer. The heat they produce will make it think your house is warmer than it really is, and your system will work harder than it needs to. Unless you absolutely need them, turn off incandescent lights and heat-generating appliances. Replace incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescences; they produce the same light but use a fifth as the energy and heat. Also try to avoid heat-generating activities, such as cooking, on hot days or during the hottest part of the day. If you are cooking, use your range fan to vent the hot air out of your house. By reducing the amount of heat in your home, you will have to use less energy to cool it. mmm

LUXURIOUS SUV Range Rover Evoque RANGE ROVER EVOQUE HITS FIVE YEARS OF UK PRODUCTION

T

he world’s most recognisable and luxurious compact SUV, the Range Rover Evoque, reached a historic milestone today as it celebrated its fifth year of production at Jaguar Land Rover’s advanced manufacturing facility. With over half a million sold globally in more than 180 countries since 2011, the Range Rover Evoque – driven everywhere from Madrid to Manila – is Land Rover’s greatest sales success story. It is also Land Rover’s most efficient model, thanks to its British-built Ingenium engines which offer class-leading CO2emissions of just 109g/km and impressive fuel consumption of 68mpg.

MOTORS SECTION

The Range Rover Evoque has become a non-stop British success with 24-hour production at the Halewood plant. Since the first Evoque rolled off the production line on July 4th 2011, sales have increased five-fold from just over 22,000 in 2011 to more than 108,000 in 2015 – with a new Evoque now rolling off the production line every 170 seconds. At the same time, the workforce has also trebled to more than 4,000, with 1,500 recruited specifically to support the launch of this record-breaking vehicle in 2011. Over the past five years, employees have clocked up more than three million night-shift hours, consuming 668,000 cups of coffee, half a million eggs and 125,000 slices of toast to keep energy

levels up during an eight hour shift. A total of 1.7 billion Evoque parts have been fitted in the Trim and Final assembly area, travelling over 2.5 million miles of conveyor system. Jaguar Land Rover associate Ash Milburn joined Halewood shortly after the launch of the Evoque: “I started as an Apprentice at a very exciting time for the company. The Range Rover Evoque has been hugely successful; it has brought a lot of positive changes to Halewood and has contributed immensely to the success of Jaguar Land Rover, as well as boosting the whole UK automotive industry,” he said. Globally, the Evoque has picked up nearly 200 awards over the last five years. Jaguar Land Rover has invested £600 million at the Halewood plant since 2010 to support the Range Rover Evoque (2011), Land Rover Discovery Sport

(2014) and the Evoque Convertible (2016). The Evoque is also the fastest selling Land Rover of all time, accounting for one in four Land Rovers sold around the world in 2015. Local production also started in China in 2015, and more recently, announced in Brazil. The Range Rover Evoque is available from £30,600 on the road for the 2.0 litre eD4 six speed manual. mmm

MERCEDES-AMG GT R

M

NEW TOP-OF-THE-RANGE SPORTSCAR ercedes-AMG continues to grow and is expanding the top end of its product range with the introduction of the new AMG GT R. “Our sportscar and performance brand AMG has its roots in motorsport and, ever since its formation, has repeatedly faced up to the competition on the racetrack. These genes are particularly prevalent in the new AMG GT R. Boasting a wealth of technological innovations, the new top-of-the-range model is proof of the close collaboration between our constructors of racing cars and road-going vehicles,” states Professor Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG, responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development. 

Aerodynamics engineers and designers worked together more intensively than ever during development of the new AMG GT R. The AMG design idiom of “Dynamic Presence” forms the basis for the far more expressive overall appearance and the very distinct look. Form follows function, and function supports form: All elements have an inherent technical benefit and contribute to the enhanced driving dynamics, while the aerodynamics experts have made the designers’ wishes a reality. This networking even resulted in an innovation that now has a patent pending.

The low-slung front section and the forwards-inclined radiator grille create a distinctive “shark nose” impression and make the car appear to sit lower on the road. At the same time, this shape lowers the vehicle’s backpressure point, enhancing the flow of cooling air and the car’s aerodynamic performance. The more V-shaped arrow-like appearance of the front end also enhances the dynamic looks, thus embodying the uninhibited forward thrust of the AMG GT R even before it moves. A front fascia featuring a completely MOTORS SECTION

new-look jet-wing design (based on the A-wing) emphasises the feeling of width and lends the car a more road-hugging appearance. In terms of their shape, the large outer air intakes in the front fascia are reminiscent of jet engines. They ensure that the increased cooling-air requirements of the AMG GT R drive system are met. For this reason, they sport two aerodynamically shaped horizontal fins in place of meshes and as a result route the airflow to the radiators without loss. a

Continued from page 102

A special engineering feat is the completely new active aerodynamics profile, which is concealed almost invisibly in the underbody in front of the engine. At a speed of 80 km/h in RACE mode, this carbon component, weighing only about two kilograms, automatically moves downward by about 40 millimetres and changes the airflow considerably. This process results in what is known as the Venturi effect, which additionally “sucks the car onto the road and reduces the front-axle lift by around 40 kilograms at 250 km/h. The driver can feel this in the steering: the AMG GT R is even more precise to steer when cornering at high speed and exhibits even better directional stability. Especially during fast cornering and under high lateral acceleration, the AMG GT R delivers far more agile response with clear steering-wheel feedback while remaining easily controllable at all times. This innovation was developed using computer simulation at first and then optimised during many hours in the wind tunnel. The results were confirmed in extensive test drives, including on the North Circuit of the Nurburgring. The new-look aerodynamics profile is barely visible on the underbody and thus blends in harmoniously with the overall silhouette. mmm

CRASH EVENT of Goliath aircraft AUGUST 27TH, 1923 WAS TO BRING AN UNEXPECTED DISASTER TO EAST MALLING. ROBIN J BROOKS LOOKS BACK AT AN INCIDENT THAT SHOOK THE ENTIRE VILLAGE

B

y the early 1920s civil aviation had become widely accepted and many people were taking the opportunity to travel by air. One of the more widely used routes was the Paris to London (Croydon) route, which passed through the Kent airspace and it was one of the scheduled aircraft flying this route that came to grief on the fateful day. Despite the fact that it was high summer, August 27th, 1923 was a damp and squally day. At East Malling the showers were accompanied by a south westerly wind making it very miserable. Around 5.15pm with low cloud beginning to increase in density, the sound of a very low aircraft was heard by the village residents. It appeared to be circling and from the sound of its engines was in some kind of trouble. Minutes later a crash was heard and then silence. The local policeman was alerted and quickly cycled to Upper Joy Farm from where the crash had been

heard. Arriving at the farm entrance he came across some wreckage together with a group of very frightened people, some of whom were obviously seriously injured. The realisation came to him that this was the scene of a major air accident. The aircraft that had crashed was a Farman Goliath registration F-AECB. Owned previously by the Compagnie des Messageries Aeriennes it had passed to the French Air Union in January 1923. It had been built at the works of H and M Farman and had been in regular use on the Channel service since July 11th, 1923 with total flying hours of less than 100. The pilot, Mons J J Denneulin, was very experienced having been a wartime member of the French Air Service and had been employed on the Channel service since May 1921. With the six passengers aboard, the aircraft left Le Bourget airport near Paris at 12.45hrs on the 27th landing about one and a half hours later at Berck to take on board three more passengers.  LOCAL HISTORY

112 mmm Continued from page 111

Leaving Berck at about 14.45hrs, the weather appeared to be deteriorating with squally showers every now and then. Flying over the Channel and picking up the English coastline at Hythe, the pilot was forced to adjust his height due to increasing cloud. Approaching Lympne airfield just inland from Hythe, a change in the engine sound developed whilst the instruments in the cockpit told that the port engine was overheating. Mons Denneulin decided to land at Lympne to see just what the problem was. Landing safely the mechanic attended the faulty engine and found that the radiator was leaking. This was not considered serious enough to ground the aircraft and after a temporary repair and refill of the radiator, the aircraft left Lympne at 16.47hrs with both engines sounding and working satisfactorily. Climbing to a height of 1,500ft the Goliath approached Maidstone from the south intending to overfly and cross Biggin Hill to land at Croydon airport. Suddenly whilst flying at about 65 knots at an altitude of 2,000ft and with no warning, the starboard engine failed completely with the propeller coming to a standstill. Over East Farleigh the Goliath began to lose height and Mons Denneulin realised that he had to land somewhere or fall out of the sky. Hoping to have the power to reach either Marden or Penshurst landing grounds with the other engine running on full power, the pilot realised that he could not keep the aircraft in level flight. Coming down even lower he saw a large field on East Malling Heath. With the mechanic, Mons J Morin, sending a wireless transmission to

Kent business news ALL’S WELL THAT ENDS WELL The 400th anniversary of the death of England’s greatest playwright and poet William Shakespeare has special resonance for a lawyer from Sevenoaks. The £19m project to create a Shakespearean playhouse and education centre, is a key element in the regeneration of Prescot – the only English town outside London to have had a purpose-built indoor playhouse in Elizabethan times. The Bard is believed to have worked in the Merseyside area when writing for a troupe of players called Strange’s Men who performed in Kent and London before an outbreak of the plague forced them to tour the provinces. The troupe was named after its patron Lord Strange, later the Fifth Earl of Derby, whose ancestral seat was Knowsley Hall. Ten years after his initial involvement Peter Scott’s work is set to come to fruition, with planning permission granted not just for the theatre but also a linked education centre as well as pledges of £5m from the Chancellor of the Exchequer and £6m from Knowsley Council. “This has been a complex cultural and educational regeneration project that required not just legal expertise but also an understanding of the workings of both local and central government,” said Peter. “There have been many false dawns but it appears we are finally on the verge of turning the vision into a reality.”

MAIDSTONE FARMER SHORTLISTED FOR M&S ‘FARMING FOR THE FUTURE’ AWARD Oli Pascall, from Salmans Farm in Maidstone, made it onto the shortlist of this year’s prestigious M&S ‘Farming for the Future’ awards. Oli has been nominated for the Young Producer award for his production of sweet blackberries and raspberries. Salmans Farm is a 50 acre site in Kent which required complete regeneration when Oli began running the site in 2014. Thanks to the hard work and effort that Oli put into developing the site with innovative, irrigation techniques, within just two years, the farm is now producing four times the volume of sweet blackberries, year on year. Judges were impressed with how Oli has dramatically improved the production levels of the old soft fruit site, his willingness to develop and trial new growing techniques and methods, and his enthusiasm to learn and develop his career in the soft fruit sector. M&S Farming for the Future is a programme of initiatives which champions sustainability and innovation. The programme is designed to help farmers identify opportunities for improvement, increase their profitability and provide a sustainable supply chain that can continue to deliver quality and innovation for the long term. JENNY TACKLES ITALIAN HILLS TO HELP CHILDREN WITH DISABILITIES A Kent mother of two who took up cycling to help with the pain of arthritic knees, is taking on an endurance challenge for the children’s charity she works for that will really put the therapy to the test. Jenny Hawkins, 36, from Kings Hill, will cycle 320 miles in just four days through the heat and hills of the Italian lake district to raise money for Tree of Hope, a charity that supports children who need specialist treatment and therapies not available on the NHS. It’s a big undertaking for someone who underwent surgery five years ago after years of pain, only to discover that the cartilage in her knees was depleted because of years of bone on bone wear. Jenny found that cycling was an important part of her recuperation. “For me, cycling is the best form of physio. My knees are good when cycling because I build up muscle that supports the kneecap. It’s really beneficial.” It’s not only her knees that will be put to the test on the gruelling ride from Milan to Verona. Temperatures are likely to be in the upper twenties, with high UV levels when it is sunny but a fair chance of rain at least some of the time. “I work with families that are desperate to help their children but find it so difficult to raise the funds to pay for the treatment, therapy or equipment they need. Although I am there supporting them every day, I wanted to do something extra.”

MAIDSTONE MAN WINS PRIZE AT DOG PHOTOGRAPHER OF THE YEAR COMPETITION The Kennel Club has announced the winners for its annual Dog Photographer of the Year competition. Now in its tenth year, the competition received almost 13,000 entries from a staggering 90 different countries. Jamie Morgan from Maidstone, Kent has been selected as the winner of the competition’s ‘Portrait’ category. After 15 years, Jamie gave up his electrical business following an industrial accident to start his dog photography business, Hound Dog Photography. Upon winning a category in the biggest canine photography competition in the world, Jamie said: “Having grown up in a farming family in beautiful Kent, the outdoors has always had a place in my heart. After a long period of running a hectic business, it was time for a lifestyle change and in 2015 I started training and working as a dog photographer.” Rosemary Smart, Kennel Club Chief Executive said: “The entries for this year’s Dog Photographer of the Year competition were some of the best we have ever seen. Choosing the winners was an incredibly challenging task and we commend every photographer who entered. Each of the winning photographers, beautifully captured the essence of their canine subjects on camera, demonstrating how important dogs are to us in every walk of life. The winners showed great technical skill and we look forward to seeing more work from them in the future.”

CHARITY LAuNCHES A NEW CAMPAIGN TO TAkE NOISE OFF THE MENu IN kENT Eight out of ten people have left a restaurant, café or pub early because of the noise according to a new survey from Action on Hearing Loss, with the charity launching a nation-wide campaign for a quieter dining experience. The online poll that surveyed both people with and without hearing loss, showed that 81% of respondents had difficulty holding a conversation because of the high level of environmental noise. They were also united (91%), in saying that they will not make a return visit to a place where the noise levels were too high. The high level of background noise, which includes noise made by other diners, noise from the kitchen and background music was also responsible for over a quarter (27%) of all respondents receiving the wrong order during a meal out. Paul Breckell, Chief Executive Action on Hearing Loss says: “Through our campaign we want to help the restaurant, café and pub industry to create a more welcoming dining experience for all customers. Whether you’re out for a meal with friends, or if you’re on a date you should be able to enjoy it without having to repeat yourself, raise your voice or receive the wrong order due to high levels of background noise. “There are 11 million of people in the UK with hearing loss so, financially, it’s a no-brainer for the industry to help make dining out even more enjoyable and accessible. Three-quarters of people believe that restaurants, cafés and pubs have become louder in the last five years and we look forward to working with the catering industry to help take noise off the menu.”

Last year we rescued 27 people and gave vital safety advice to over 90,000 members of the public. “When you arrive at the beach, familiarise yourself with the red and yellow flags. These will mark the safest place to swim. Depending on tides and the weather, this area may change daily, so speak to a lifeguard if you have any questions. “If people do get into difficulty, our lifeguards are highly trained to help people in and out of the water. HUGE DEMAND PROMPTS PUB TO EXPAND GLUTEN-FREE FOOD The Duke of Edinburgh in Barming near Maidstone has expanded the availability of its 100% gluten-free menu, in response to overwhelming customer demand. The traditional Shepherd Neame pub introduced food for the first time in March this year, following a £130,000 refurbishment. Licensee Adam Phillips teamed up with Chef Paul Larcombe, and the pair came up with the idea of a gluten free menu as Paul’s three-year-old daughter Layla suffers from coeliac disease. It has proven a huge success, with customers regularly travelling down from London and across Kent to eat at the pub. National magazine Gluten-Free Heaven featured it as the ‘Hottest Place in Town’ in its April issue, and celebrity Chef Phil Vickery has supported the pub on Twitter. The pub has also received 890 likes on its Facebook page, with 4.9 out of 5 stars from reviewers. Paul, who lives in Ashford, said: “There just aren’t enough restaurants or pubs out there catering for people with gluten allergies. We are one of only two places in Kent with a 100% gluten-free kitchen, which means customers can order anything from the menu without any fear of cross-contamination. It is a huge comfort, particularly for parents like me with children who suffer from coeliac disease and can experience bad reactions.” The pub’s gastropub-style menu features a variety of dishes to be enjoyed in a tapas style, such as mini fish and chips, garlic and lime marinated chicken skewers, and mini pork and apple burgers. A selection of dishes is served on the Duke’s Sharing Tapas Platter, and there are also oven baked flat breads with a variety of toppings available.
