elcome to this very special festive edition of mmm which we hope will bring a little added glitter to your Christmas preparations. After weeks of avoiding getting pulled into the build-up to the season – which seems to get earlier every year – we hope you’ll find inside plenty of inspiration to make sure you have a magical time. You will find a host of great ideas for the perfect gifts, ways to decorate your home in style and plenty of plans to keep the children entertained too. And don’t worry if you haven’t started your shopping yet; we are fortunate in Kent to be surrounded by a glorious selection of independent and major retailers stocking a fabulous wide selection of goods to everyone’s tastes. We should all be sure to support our local traders at this all-important time of year. While you are perusing the shops this season, we hope you’ll find time to sit back and relax with mmm. Inside this issue you’ll also find a little star dust too – with special features on the model daughter of Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. Georgia May Jagger has proved she has got what it takes to stand on her own two feet with a dazzling career already for one so young. What’s more inside this issue you can win some fabulous prizes courtesy of a competition with our friends at the Ashford International hotel and Baldwins travel. We’ve got spa passes and iPads to give away. In addition, we take a look at funny man Julian Clary who has just announced another stand-up tour in the county next year. Of course, this Christmas will be particularly poignant. I write this in the immediate aftermath of the tragedy in Paris – an event which left me, like the rest of us, so terribly upset. Perhaps at this time of year in particular we should be sure to fully appreciate what we have; our loving families and friends. We should all go that extra mile this year to reach out to everyone we know to make sure we don’t take them for granted; be that with a gift, a card, or simply a smile. Life can be so fragile. Christmas is the perfect time for us all to come together and celebrate being a part of each other’s lives and remember how very lucky we are. And where better to do that than in Kent – a beautiful, awe-inspiring county which boasts so many things to see, do and enjoy. So make sure you have a festive season to remember and have a very happy Christmas. We’ll see you in 2016!

W

See you next month! Rasa

GEORGIA MAY JAGGER Like a Rolling Stone HOW GEORGIA MAY JAGGER HAS EMERGED FROM THE SHADOW OF HER FAMOUS PARENTS TO BE ONE OF THE WORLD’S MOST IN-DEMAND MODELS

S

ome people are simply born to become stars. And if celebrity is deep within your very genetic make-up it is an inevitability. So it is little wonder that Georgia May Jagger has now established herself as one of the latest era of supermodels – combining glamour, celebrity and the backing of the world’s biggest brands. The youngest daughter of Dartford’s Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger and the forever glamorous Jerry Hall, at just 23 she has modelled for the likes of Chanel, Versace, Vivienne Westwood and Rimmel. She even joined the likes of Kate Moss and Naomi Campbell in front of a global audience of hundreds of millions to celebrate British fashion at the closing ceremony of the 2012 London Olympic Games. But she’s also only too aware of the benefits her famous family bring and the opportunities they have created – in addition to some dropdead gorgeous biology. “Without question my mum has opened doors for me,” she reflects, “and I am very grateful for everything she and my dad have done for me. “My mum always says not to take yourself too seriously and don’t dress for other people.  CELEBRITY FEATURE

WHAT’S ON AND WHEN

“My dad taught me how to have a life, too. He is someone that is so recognised, but he does manage to keep his life private and he’s passed that on to me.” It would be terribly unfair to suggest her career is purely based on her heritage, yet there is no denying the name hasn’t hurt. At just 22 she had earned enough money from her own career to be able to buy her own house. So much, so young…and so much more to come. “I get asked what I want to do in the future every day, which is crazy,” she reflects, “ I’m only 23 and I’ve been working for eight years. I’d like to work in the fashion industry but not as a model. Hopefully I’ll do photography and I’ll be designing stuff in the future. We’ll see.” Born in 1992, she is the third of the couple’s four children born after Elizabeth (born in 1984), James (1985) and before Gabriel (1997). CELEBRITY FEATURE

She grew up in the family’s home in Richmond Hill, in London, and was just six when her parent’s long relationship ended in divorce in 1999. Since then, her parents have continued to generate headlines on a nearly weekly basis but Georgia May seems to enjoy the lifestyle which her parents’ continued success delivers. She admitted taking in several of the Stones’ shows on their recent world tour. She said: “We’ve had a lot of fun in the crowd pit shaped as a tongue. We actually took Taylor Swift in there and that was the first time she’d been in the crowd at a concert for ages.

“People don’t really recognise me and I’m quite good at going out incognito without any make-up.” Splitting her time between London, New York and frequent trips to the likes of Australia, she is fast racking up the sort of air miles of her parents. She’s also having to get used to some of the drawbacks of such a jet-set lifestyle. “My mum told me that by doing a job like this means you miss out on some personal events, like birthdays and weddings, but you get over it.” Her relationship with her parents remains tight. Earlier this year she and her mother holidayed together in the south of France, being snapped enjoying the beach at St Tropez. While the family unit may have fractured, they have all taken steps to ensure none drift too far away, and being together remains important. Her mother Jerry Hall explained: “Even

though Mick and I were divorced, we’ve tried hard to make a healthy environment for our children. Things we’ve been very strict about are good manners and thoughtfulness to others. We’ve always had meals with them, so they have always interacted with adults and people from different walks of life, so they are able to make conversation – I think that’s a great skill to teach your children. “Having famous parents was challenging for our kids. I’d come from some modelling job all made up and they’d say, ‘Mum, why can’t you just, like, wear jogging clothes when you pick me up from school?’. But I think they picked up a strong work ethic from Mick and me. “My children are very close to Mick’s other children, my stepchildren. Mick has a son with another woman, after me, so the whole family is very, very close, and I’m close with the mothers. “I think family is really, really important. It gives you a good foundation, a lot of strength. It’s really important to me that there is not conflict in the family. We have big Christmas get-togethers; with all the mums and all the children and it’s wonderful. One big blended family.” 

It’s certainly a very modern one. But you cannot help but respect that Jerry Hall and Mick Jagger – two of the most instantly recognisable figures in the world today – remain so intent on protecting the unity of family, despite all the complications and relationships which pop up along the way. For Georgia May, the future looks as bright as ever. At 23, she has the world at her feet and a host of top contracts. She remains the face of Rimmel London’s advertising campaigns, and last year appeared in an international campaign for German jewellery firm Thomas Sabo. She may have originally caught the attention due to her famous parents, but Georgia May Jagger has more than proved she can stand on her own two feet. mmm

MULLED WINE guaranteed spirit raiser

MULLED WINE 2/3 cup of honey or sugar 3 cinnamon sticks 8 to 10 cloves 2 tablespoons ground ginger (can be substituted with allspice) 1 orange, peeled and sliced (keep the peel to add zest for taste) 2 ounces of brandy (optional)

N

othing fills a home with Christmas spirit like the aroma of mulled wine on the stove. Cinnamon, orange peel, allspice, cloves, pink peppercorns and ginger are some of our favourites. Kind of like a warm Sangria, there are many ways that this can be prepared and rules don’t apply as strictly compared to other cocktails so have some fun with it. You can use fresh fruits or dried but a great way to share with friends is to make mulling spice gift packs. Then all they need to do is add some wine, sugar and brandy and they are off to the races.

Aromatic mulled red wine £30.00 Marks and Spencer

Tesco mulled wine £21.00 Tesco

Combine the ingredients (except the brandy) in a large pot over low to medium heat and warm carefully. Keep below a simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring frequently. Despite its Hungarian name, ‘forralt bor’ (boiled wine), it’s important not to boil the wine, as the boiling point of alcohol is lower than that of water so by the time it comes to a boil both its alcohol content and wonderful aroma will be gone. Finally stir in the brandy, serve hot and enjoy.

Luxury lemon, pecan and Amaretto mince pies

Method • Sift the plain flour into a mixing bowl and stir in the icing sugar, cinnamon, and ground almond. Rub in the butter until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs. • Add the yolk and milk and combine to make a soft dough. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for half an hour. • Chop the pecans into small pieces and mix into the mincemeat with the Amaretto. • When the pastry has chilled, roll out on a floured surface to a 3mm thickness. Use a fluted cutter and cut out 36 rounds. Grease three 12-holed patty tins or bun tins and line each with a pastry circle.

• Add half a dessertspoon of mincemeat to each and put in the fridge for half an hour to chill. • Beat the softened butter with the caster sugar, selfraising flour, eggs and lemon zest until well combined. • Put about half a tablespoon of this sponge mixture on top of each mincemeat tart. • Place in a preheated oven, 180oC, for 13 to 15 minutes until the sponge is lightly golden and springs back when gently pressed. Leave to cool. • When cold, mix the lemon juice with the icing sugar and drizzle over the top of each mince pie cake. Then ready to serve. Toasted marshmallow, chocolate

almond brittle and peanut butter ice cream

Ingredients Marshmallow 120g egg white 455g caster sugar 200g water 50g glucose 4 bronze gelatin leaves 50g corn flour 50g icing sugar Peanut butter ice cream 100g caster sugar 100g egg yolk 250g double cream 250 full fat milk 50g peanut butter Chocolate paint 50g cocoa butter 50g dark chocolate Almond brittle 100g toasted flaked almonds 100g caster sugar 50g butter 50g water

Method For the marshmallow • Whisk the egg whites to a soft peak. Boil the sugar, water, vanilla and glucose over a moderate heat to 121°c and then add the softened gelatin to melt. Slowly add the sugar mixture to the whisking soft peak egg whites, once all the sugar has incorporated, continue to whisk until the mixture begins to cool down. Then transfer the ‘meringue’ mixture to a lined container with the icing sugar and cornflour mixed onto it. Once cool and firm, turn out and portion into rectangles dusted again with the icing sugar and corn flour mix. For the peanut butter ice cream • Place the milk and cream into a heavy-based pan and bring to the boil. Remove from the heat. Whisk the egg yolks and sugar together in a bowl until pale and fluffy, then slowly whisk in the milk and cream mixture until well combined. Return the custard to a clean pan and cook over a medium-low heat for 5 to 6 minutes, until it thickens enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon. Whisk in the peanut butter and set aside to cool completely. Pour the custard mixture into an ice cream machine and churn according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Spoon into a freezer-proof plastic container and chill in the freezer until ready to serve. Remove from the freezer five minutes before serving to soften. For the chocolate paint • Melt the cocoa butter and chocolate together over a bain marie and leave in a warm place to keep melted. For the almond brittle • Boil the sugar, butter and water until a toffee caramel colour, pour over the toasted almonds, then allow to cool and set. Carefully break the brittle to get shards of almonds. To serve • Brush the chocolate paint across the plate, providing an area to build the dessert on. Blow torch the marshmallow lightly to get a toasted effect and flavour. Assemble the other garnishes over and around the marshmallow for a playful presentation. Recipe from: The Swan

Baked goats

and spinach cheese tart

Ingredients 4x individual tart cases or one 12” blind baked short crust pastry case 6x large shallots 500g fresh baby leaf spinach 120g x goat’s cheese log (sliced in four ) 1x egg yolk 250ml x double cream 1x bunch of fresh chives. 120g seasonal leaves 100ml of your favourite salad dressing 25g sesame seeds

Method • Finely slice your shallots, cook on a low heat, without colour in a thick-bottomed pan. • Whilst the shallots are cooking slowly, mix the egg yolk and double cream together, season with rock salt and cracked black pepper. • Finely slice your chives and add to the egg mixture, stir and refrigerate. • Bring a small pan of water to the boil and add your spinach, submerge the spinach into the water for 30 seconds. • Remove spinach, with a slotted spoon, and add to a bowl of iced water. • Remove the spinach and squeeze between your fingers to remove any excess, visible water. • Place the spinach in a bowl, and set to one side. • Divide the shallots, between the four pre-baked tart cases, and spread evenly across the bases. • Take the spinach, and divide evenly on top of the shallots, ensuring that it all touches the sides. Season. • Now take a piece of the goats cheese, and break into four, place these four pieces on top of the spinach and repeat with the other three cases. • Pour over the egg and chive mixture until each case is full. • Bake the tarts for 10 minutes on 210°c or until golden brown. • In a small frying pan, gently grill a hand full, of seasame seeds until lightly golden, and warm. • Serve, straight from the oven on a selection of dressed mixed salad leaves with a drizzle of salad dressing, and sprinkle with a few freshly sliced chives and toasted sesame seeds. GOODWILL TO ALL MEN true meaning of Christmas THE EXPRESSION ‘OH, IT WILL ALL BE OVER BY CHRISTMAS’ WAS THE THOUGHT OF MANY IN 1939. ROBIN J BROOKS LOOKS BACK AT FIVE YEARS OF WARTIME CHRISTMAS

T

Joy at last as the people celebrate all over the country

he message of Christmas is one of goodwill. Easy in these times of peace but in times of war this philosophy did not come easy. By December 1939 Britain had been at war for over three months. Not that it would appear so, for with very little evidence of enemy action, this was the period known as ‘the Phoney War’. Life carried on as normal with every town and village in Kent preparing for what some thought could be the last ‘normal’ Christmas for years to come. With no rationing in place there was however no shortage of commodities or food. The local farmers were busy with turkey, chicken and goose sales whilst shop tills were ringing every day. The only apparent drawback was that the blackout had been introduced thus denying people the privilege of seeing Christmas tree lights in the windows of the houses. Although the government had asked the public to curb the urge to spend more money than usual, this went unheeded as hotels became fully booked and restaurants reported increased trade. The two voids in many households were however the absence of a father or son who had already joined the military and could not be home and the

fact that many young children had already been evacuated to other parts of the country for their own safety. In the latter instance however with no apparent danger appearing, many had returned home by Christmas only to be evacuated once again during 1940. By the time Christmas was celebrated that year, the season was to prove entirely different. With the Battle of Britain won by the autumn, the enemy turned its tactics to bombing the towns and villages of the country and especially Kent, the nearest county to London. This was the first real wartime Christmas and with rationing introduced during January, life for the civilian population was becoming very hard indeed. It had become a daily struggle with ration cards, endless queues and shortage of food. Butter, sugar, bacon and ham were the first to go on ration followed in March by all other meat products. When it came to bread it was the universally unpopular ‘national wheat-meal loaf’ that replaced normal bread. The government dictated that there was to be no waste, failure to comply would result in prosecution as one local housewife sadly found out. The local newspapers said it all.  HISTORY FEATURE

50 mmm

‘ A housewife was today fined a total of £10 for feeding the birds with stale bread. She was told that this could have been put to better use by making a meal such as bread pudding and thus helping the war effort. It is hoped that this fine will prevent others from breaking the law’. With restrictions such as this, Christmas 1940 was a subdued affair. Heavy snow fell in Kent turning the countryside into a magical fairyland. Sustaining heavy bombing since the beginning of the blitz, the weather at least bought a respite over the festive period. Cards were still sent to family and friends though many were of the home made variety. With rationing beginning to bite hard, the year was a continual struggle to make ends meet. People were encouraged to ‘dig for Victory’ by turning their lawns into vegetable patches and the appearance of posters advertising the ‘Spitfire Fund’ all helped to keep up the morale of the public as they came together to ‘do their bit’. It was also the year that the black market began to flourish with plenty of non-rationed food available but at a price. Would 1941 see an improvement in the situation or would it get worse? March saw the ‘Lend / lease bill passed in America

enabling Britain to receive US goods on a ‘pay later’ agreement. With the first arriving in May, it did nothing to prevent the rationing of clothes and all retail goods which took effect immediately. It became a case of ‘make do and mend’. Rationing had reached its height by December 1941 when a family was allowed just 3 oz of cheese, 4 oz of jam and preserves, 2 pints of milk and approximately 3 eggs. In addition there were no turkeys, gin, sherry, chocolate or fruit with cigarettes and tobacco in very short supply. One positive thought as the year drew to a close was that we were not alone anymore in the fight against tyranny. With the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbour in December, 1941, the Americans had entered the war. Soon the expression ‘over here, over paid and over sexed’ began to be heard as the US Forces arrived and made the greatest impact on Britain for decades. Apart from attracting the fair sex they also brought nylon stockings, canned fruit, chocolate and other commodities that were not available in the UK even on the black market. They also introduced very glamorous Christmas cards which appeared so much better than those made at home.  Even the enemy suffered from rationing at Christmas

HISTORY FEATURE

52 mmm

mmm 53

By 1942 two luxury commodities had been added to the ration list. Soap and sweets were restricted to 4oz of household soap and 2oz of luxury soap per month and, a disaster for children, sweets were rationed to 12oz per month. The Ministry of Food, ever willing to help, came up with the following suggestion:- ‘A Christmassy sparkle is easy to add to sprigs of holly or evergreen for use on puddings. Dip your greenery in a strong solution of Epsom Salts. When dry it will be beautifully frosted!’ However for those not wanting to cook on Christmas Day there was cheap food provided by a chain known as ‘ British Restaurants’. With over 2,000 of them open by September 1943, the public were able to enjoy satisfying meals. At the same time it was estimated that only one family in ten who were spending Christmas at home would taste turkey. The magazines that were available included instructions for making pretty bookmarks and calendars to give as presents. Despite the hardship, the season of 1943 did give hope that the war was going in the right direction and that just perhaps, it ‘might all be over by Christmas’ 1944. The year however dispelled any thoughts that this might be true. Despite the fact that initially spirits were elevated with the news that the Allies had landed in France on June 6th, 1944, and that the enemy was being pushed back into Germany, the later news that the Ardennes offensive had seen many thousands of soldiers die on both sides saw hopes fade swiftly away. The arrival of the V1 ‘doodlebug’ and the V2 rocket campaign further exaggerated thoughts that the war was to continue for at least another year. Perhaps the one light on the horizon was the fact that the Ministry of Food announced Christmas treats with extra rations over the festive period. Sadly however, this did not include alcohol but the most industrious of the populace resorted to making their own wine with anything they found that would ferment! As 1945 dawned a sense of optimism prevailed with the announcement of the death of Adolf Hitler in April. The last days saw a struggle for Berlin, eventually ending with the city under total Russian control. With the surrendering of all other German cities, it was announced on May 8th 1945 that the war was over. At last VE day had arrived. Euphoria swept through the country and no more so than in Kent. Christmas 1945 was still under rationing control but the joy of realising that finally the death and killing was over brought untold joy. Once again the pleasure of sending Christmas cards and the feeling that the season did herald the feeling of ‘goodwill to all men’ meant that the war was well and truly over even though rationing for the housewife was to continue until the 1950s. However those who lived through those six years of wartime austerity came to appreciate the true meaning of Christmas, something that is perhaps lacking a little in the 21st century. “I just don’t feel the need any more. It was a daring thing to do back then, now it’s not.” Born in 1959 in Surbiton, Surrey, his father was a policeman and his mother a probation officer. He admits there was a lot of laughter in the house

and that he enjoyed his childhood. “My mother didn’t want me to be a typical bloke. I was never badly behaved as a child, but I became subversive and theatrical,” he says. “My father was somewhat bemused but my mother positively encouraged it. “I feel that my mother deliberately shaped me to be the person I am. “I was an effeminate child and it was obvious to most people [that I was homosexual] – people would call me gay when I was at primary school. When I had my first national newspaper interview, the headline was ‘Gay Clary’. I was a bit taken aback, but my parents said they liked it.” That theatrical side would lead him to seek to pursue a comedy career – stepping out in various guises in the alternative comedy scene that would spawn the talents of the likes of Rik Mayall, Adrian Edmonson, Ben Elton, Jennifer Saunders, Dawn French and Harry Enfield. Until as the Joan Collins Fan Club – the act which featured Fanny the Wonder Dog - he was picked up by Friday Night Live. From there he would start a slow but steady climb up the entertainment ladder. He first co-hosted a short-lived ITV game show in 1989 with the late DJ and presenter Mike Smith, called Trick or Treat, before hitting his stride with Channel 4 game show Sticky Moments with Julian Clary. He would return to the BBC for All Rise for Julian Clary in 1996 and has fronted a number of shows, TV adverts and appeared on panel shows. In 2004, he took part in the BBC series Strictly Come Dancing, finishing third with his partner Erin Boag – a move which showcased him to a new 

audience and helped catapult him into the mainstream. Since then, it appears he is rarely off our screens. In addition, he has penned a number of books. Yet the success has not come without some heartache. In 1991 his boyfriend Christopher died from AIDS, which claimed the lives of so many in the 1980s and 90s. It was a traumatic time for the star, who spent nine months nursing him prior to his passing. “I just think I’m lucky to be here,” he says now, “having lived through the decades I have and the fact that some of my friends are no longer with us. “The doctors did their best [with Christopher]. They threw all these drugs at him. But they didn’t really know what they were doing in those days - and I think he knew that. I am cross that he couldn’t have had the medication that is available now.” Today, however, he is happy with his partner of the past 13 years, Ian. And next year he embarks on yet another stand-up tour – the chance for those with whom he shares the county of Kent to witness a remarkable and warm performer do what he does best. Julian Clary’s The Joy of Mincing tour calls at Tunbridge Wells’ Assembly Hall Theatre on April 22nd and Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre on April 24th. Tickets are on sale now. mmm

HISTORIC, POETIC, ICONIC Sissinghurst Castle Garden THE BACKDROP TO A DIVERSE HISTORY AND WORLD RENOWNED GARDEN

S

issinghurst Castle a refuge dedicated to beauty. Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson fell in love with the Castle and created a world renowned garden. Vita Sackville-West, the poet and writer, began transforming Sissinghurst Castle in the 1930s with her diplomat and author husband, Harold Nicolson. Harold’s architectural planning of the garden rooms, and the colourful, abundant planting in the gardens by Vita, reflect the romance and intimacy of her poems and writings. Sissinghurst Castle Garden was the backdrop to a diverse history; from the astonishing time as a prison in the 1700s, to being a home to the Women’s Land Army. It was also a family home to some fascinating people who lived here or came to stay. The vast panoramic views from the top of the Tower, show the working farm and the 450-acre wider estate. In the early 1930s views of Sissinghurst Castle Garden reveal that buildings were sited amidst a working farm. Orchards were present behind the tower and the woodland was much denser. The farmland around was used to grow wheat, graze livestock and grow fruit and hops. Sissinghurst Castle’s past is a complicated one; spanning many centuries, monarchs and uses. Here’s a brief glimpse into the past of one of the most intriguing places in the Weald of Kent.

Vita often wrote of Sissinghurst: ‘The heavy golden sunshine enriched the old brick with a kind of patina, and made the tower cast a long shadow across the grass, like the finger of a gigantic sundial veering slowly with the sun. Everything was hushed and drowsy and silent but for the coo of the white pigeons.’ Vita’s work room was in the Tower. It was where she spent much of her time writing. In 1940 Vita wrote to Harold: ‘The only nice thing that comes out of war is that we now have a guard on top of the tower. In a steel helmet and rifle he looks most picturesque over the parapet.’

The Sissinghurst Castle estate is 450 acres of beautiful Wealden countryside. Looked after by a team of rangers, it’s a fascinating place to spot native wildlife all year round. It is a joy for walkers and horse riders alike. The tenant farmer, farms the land and rears Sussex cattle and Romney sheep. Take a look behind the rose garden gate on Thursday afternoons 2pm – 4.30pm in September and October for a glimpse into the new growing area in the nursery. This new area has three main roles, a flower garden, a trial area where varieties of perennials are grown and a biennial growing area – this is where foxgloves, verbascums and wallflowers are grown from seed. These are planted in the autumn, grown on over winter for planting out early the following spring. The gardeners will be working in this area on Thursday afternoons so the public will be able to observe, talk to them and ask questions. NATIONAL TRUST

LEEDS CASTLE GOES QUACKERS TO HELP LITTLE GEORGIA Any parents will know how distressing it can be when your little one loses a favourite toy. During a visit to Leeds Castle with her mum on the 26th October, poor 16 month old Georgia Milne from Maidstone lost her beloved cuddly duck ‘Ducker’ somewhere in the 500 acres of grounds. Ducker was Georgia’s first ever toy, bought whilst on a family holiday. She last remembered playing pooh sticks with him on the bridges as they made their way back through the Woodland Walk and towards the car park. Quick thinking Mum, Liz Milne took to Twitter to appeal to Leeds Castle and our visitors in the search to #helpfindducker. Staff at the Castle were alerted to be on the lookout for

Ducker around the grounds, but sadly it appears as if he may have migrated for the winter. Unable to find Ducker, Leeds Castle invited Georgia and her Mum back to the Castle this week to give a new home to Ducker’s long lost cousin ‘Quacker’ – on the condition that they keep an eye on him when playing pooh sticks in the future. Liz said: “I shared the missing Ducker poster on Twitter hoping he would be handed in. Ducker meant so much to Georgia so it was very kind and so lovely of Leeds Castle to replace Ducker with Quacker. We will definitely look after this one much better.” Leeds Castle CEO Sir David Steel said: “All of us at the Castle have been thrilled to home Quacker with Georgia. With many thousands of children of all ages visiting the grounds that week, my hope is that Ducker has also found a good home with an equally devoted custodian.” Annual tickets to Leeds Castle cost £24 for adults; £21 for seniors and visitors with disabilities (carer goes free); £16 for children (under 4’s free). Annual tickets are valid for 12 months so you can pay once and visit all year round. Pre-book online before you visit and save 10%.

Gavin Tyler, managing partner at Cripps, said: “This is an excellent performance and to receive such recognition in so many specialist areas is proof of LOCAL NEWS

our position as a leading South East law firm, serving clients in London, Kent, Surrey and Sussex – one that can match and better the offering of many national players.” Particularly notable in the guide is the regional strength of the Cripps corporate and commercial division, which is described as a “high-quality team delivering high-quality work”, adding “the exceptionally large team has sector specialisms in healthcare, advertising and technology”. This weekend saw 700 of the toughest men, women and even children (8 years and over) take on the first Commando Series, a 6km/12km 15 obstacle and endurance challenge at Hever Castle in Kent. Tackling exact replicas of the obstacles used by the Royal Marine Commandos at the Training Centre in Devon, participants showed their true grit and determination to make it across the wild terrain course. The course included the harsh grounds of the Castle’s surrounding forest and took in the unique caves and challenging waterways. Authentic Commando Instructors were on-hand at each obstacle ready to give participants help or encouragement, whether they wanted to ‘just get around’ or be ‘treated like a commando’. The course record for the fastest time, taking two laps of the route was set by Dean Stattmann

from London, in an incredible one hour 25 minutes. Dean totally immersed himself in the experience by also taking on the overnight survival and bivouac experience, sleeping outside in the grounds and learning the guiding principles of survival. Another ‘recruit’ Richard who travelled from Bournemouth to attend the event said, “The event created a great sense of community with everyone helping each other out, the Commando Instructors were tough but the obstacles were fun and the course was brilliant.” Some of the more well-known obstacles included the dreaded Sheep Dip and a 30m neck deep wading pool but wannabe recruits powered through each test with the help of Royal Marine Commandos stationed at each stop. All the finishers made it to the top of the last obstacle, the 12ft wall, conquering the biggest test of all. Each and every finisher was then rewarded with a Commando Series finisher dog tag. Blind runner, Alison Mead and her guide GB athlete, Roz McGinty completed the entire course together finishing all the obstacles with the courage of true commandos. Roz says,“Who knew so much mud and water could be so fun. The Commando was simply awesome; tough, wellorganised with a fab variety of obstacles.” LOCAL NEWS

WIND BAND TAKES A MUSICAL TRIP AROUND THE WORLD Kent Schools Wind Band treated family and friends to a varied programme of wind band music on Sunday (November 1st) taking them on a musical journey around the world. The concert was the culmination of a three-day course run by Kent Music at the Thorndyke Arts Centre in Rochester.

The course for school age students included intensive sectional work with professional musicians alternating with full rehearsals under the expert leadership of Graeme Vinall. Course manager Phill Hyde said: “This was a really productive and intensive course allowing students to enjoy and benefit from performing with like-minded musicians from around the county. The progression and development in three days by the group was truly impressive.”

DYNAMIC PROPERTY AGENT LAUNCHES IN KENT Britain’s newest entrant into the property sales market is launching in Kent. YOPA has recruited Barry Attree to lead its push in the Bromley, Dartford and Medway areas of the county, and Philip Brown to cover Tonbridge. Between them they have over 45 years’ experience in the industry. YOPA CEO Daniel Attia said: “We know that people across Kent want to get the best possible price for their property, are looking for a 24/7 estate agent with the latest technology and they’re fed up of being ripped off by excessive estate agent fees. “Now vendors can spend the money we save them on something else – like a holiday, a new car or smart furniture for their new home. Our winning combination of local property managers and easyto-use web property marketing platform frees our local experts to accurately value your property, create quality details and negotiate the best price for you. The days of the old-fashioned high street estate agent that closes at 5pm are firmly over. We can offer a slicker, faster, more efficient service with the customer at the heart of everything we do.” LOCAL NEWS

ELEGANT NEW LOOK FOR THE SWAN INN Historic 19th century pub The Swan in Maidstone has reopened following an extensive £80,000 refurbishment. Work at the traditional town centre pub, owned by Shepherd Neame, included redecorating the bar area, including introducing a new back bar display and wood effect flooring. A log burning stove was installed in the snug area, which now has flagstone flooring. The toilets have been completely refurbished, and new lighting and decorations have been introduced throughout the pub. The pub exterior has been repainted, with traditional sign writing, and its walled garden has been refurbished. The pub also has a new licensee, Anna-Marie Snell from Larkfield, who moved in at the start of September. Anna-Marie, 32, worked in pubs for

several years before taking time out to be a full-time Mum to her four children, aged from three to 13. She said: “I was ready to get back into work, and started looking around for pubs in the area. As soon as I walked in The Swan, I knew it was the right one. It had a really friendly atmosphere, and was in a great location. I also liked the idea of taking over the pub after the refurbishment work, as it gave me a clean slate which I could put my stamp on.” Anna-Marie will be running the pub with her partner Aaron Chamber, along with her sister-in-law, brother and Mum. She said: “Our aim is to ensure the pub is at the heart of the local community. Children and dogs will be welcome and we have lots of events and live entertainment coming up for customers to enjoy. It is my first time as a licensee, but I have lots of pub experience, and am confident that with the support of my family, we can ensure The Swan goes from strength to strength.” Shepherd Neame’s director of retail and tenanted operations Nigel Bunting said: “The Swan is a great traditional local, and we are really pleased with the results of the refurbishment project. We look forward to seeing Anna-Marie and her family maximise the pub’s full potential.” LOCAL NEWS

MEDWAY YOUNGSTER

selected as mini comedy star

A

young Medway student has recently been selected and filmed a role for the BBC, playing the part of a young Russell Howard. He is a comedian and television and radio presenter, best known for his TV show Russell Howard’s Good News and his appearances on the topical panel TV show Mock the Week. The comedian is currently filming his Christmas special called Gert Lush and needed a youngster who could play a mini version of himself. Nathan Stone, age 11, who attends part-time theatre school Razzamataz Medway, was selected for the role and has recently finished filming with the comedian. The filming took place in Uxbridge and Nathan was even given his own trailer. “It was an amazing day and he took everything in his stride,” says Mum, Jadie Stone. “It was a long day with lots of waiting around but Nathan thoroughly enjoyed every minute of it. Razzamataz Medway has made him into the confident little actor that he is. He loves every minute of Razzamataz and is disappointed when a Saturday is not a ‘Razz day.’ Going to Razz really enhances his life in so many ways.” Gert Lush is a 60-minute special on BBC 2 about Russell taking his girlfriend to meet his family in the West Country. The filming all takes place in a house and Nathan explained it was a bit of a squeeze getting all the actors and production crew in.

“Working with Russell Howard was great,” explains Nathan. “Off camera he was really friendly and fun to talk to. The rest of the cast were also really friendly and I learnt so much about the whole filming process. The production company were great and sent me a thank you card for working with them.” As well as acting with adults, Nathan had to master working with animals as he explains: “I acted with a dog called Gizmo, who was a rescue dog but has now gone into acting; he even has his own agent. In one of the scenes with Gizmo, I had to hold the actual video camera that the crew used and run with Gizmo from actor Neil Morrissey. It was really heavy and I had to have dog biscuits in my pocket to get Gizmo to stay by my side.” Nathan has been a regular at Razzamataz Medway for the last four years. During the Saturday sessions, he learns dance, drama and singing and covers the whole spectrum of performing arts from classic West End musical theatre to street dance, pop singing and acting for camera. This diverse training is turning Nathan and his fellow students into versatile performers. Students get lots of opportunities to perform at Razzamataz Medway, something that helps to build on their confidence and social skills. The fun classes are for all children whatever their background or ability and there is a strong focus on keeping fit and active, having fun and making friends. Classes start at age two and go on to 18 and there are regular special guest workshops for students of all ages. Classes in Medway are every Saturday during term time at Mid Kent College on Medway Road in Gillingham.

Clairvoyant Ali is an International Clairvoyant and Psychic Teacher. She works from her shop called The Guiding Angels in Herne Bay, Kent where she gives face to face readings for celebrities and locals. Ali has over 20 years experience and will teach anyone who wishes to develop their own skills.

Tarot reading for December birthdays:

Star Signs that fall under December are: Sagittarius (23rd November – 23rd December) and Capricorn (24th December – 20th January)

A typical Sagittarian likes to be in control of their own lives and the lives of others as they are the ones who can do things far better than anyone else and that’s why no one else will do! (Or so they think). They can sort out issues that other people shy away from as they like a challenge and thrive under pressure. A typical Capricorn likes the very best of everything in life. They have the good ideas but prefer someone else to do the hard work. They are born to lead or born to make decisions about leading. They are great at counting their money and getting organised with work schedules. LOVE Sagittarians – You feel like you could reach for the stars and get whatever you want but the reality is that you feel a little stuck in a rut and you need to see that freedom is yours for the taking if you really want it. I see that security is a big factor in your life, so you may be wiser to leave things as they are for now, unless you really have had enough! Capricorns – You have an independence about your personality that sometimes confuses others of your need for them to be in your life. You have been enjoying the fun and happy times but there is a strong urge for you to be alone or to draw away from the busy side of life. Finances / Work Sagittarians – The wheel of fortune is turning and it’s going in a new direction for the better. I can see that you are breaking free from restrictions and people / situations holding you back. It’s time to focus and put your directions into motion. You are completely ready for this success so enjoy the ride! Capricorns – The sun is out in your life well metaphorically speaking! I can see that you have had the strength to carry on with a plan that wasn’t really making progress the way it should or there have been some hold ups. Now it’s paying off and you need to pour yourself your favourite tipple and celebrate the good news! Well done!

DecemberHoroscopes Capricorn 24th Dec – 20th Jan Love/Family: You are enjoying the love energy around the family and close friends at this time. I can see that it’s the little things in life that are pleasing you and not the bigger gestures. There are some close to you though who look for the label before appreciating the gesture! These people can create a boredom feeling around you and a need for your own space. Work/Finances: There is a really good outcome over finances around the end of this year and all is looking good. There is one project ending and another just starting. I see legal or official paperwork around you as well, that will acquire a great deal of attention in January 2016. Aries 21st March – 20th April Love/Family: Peace, tranquillity and happiness. Love and togetherness, harmony and singing songs around an open fire with loved ones and family. Actually the reality is a chaotic family life with friends coming to gate crash your celebrations and there is a need for you to escape into a dark corner and relax. Work/Finances: I see more documents around your work / finances and a need to get something sorted out. These documents are related to events in October / November 2015. I can see that you are getting organised now and things are moving forward. Cancer 22nd June – 23rd July Love/Family: You are bridging the gap between yourself and someone who you had lost communication with and this is now becoming easier and you realise what the misunderstanding was in the first place. You have been thinking the worst and this is now out in the open and you are feeling very happy with the situation. Work/Finances: I can see changes in your environment and there is chaos and confusion over whether you or someone close to you will be changing from one area to another, either in work or in their personal life. Either way there is a sense of reorganisation and getting decisions made that are not just best for one person but best for all people involved. Libra 24th Sept – 23rd Oct Love/Family: You are not happy with a person who is very needy at the moment and you are aware why they are throwing their toys out of their pram as well. You know that the attention isn’t on them but on other people at this time and they don’t like it. You can see that this person is not the team player you need them to be at Christmas time and so you have to treat them like a child. Work/Finances: I can see that this spoilt, selfish character is also affecting the money side of your life too and this is really getting to you. You are going to have to switch off and ignore them to a certain degree otherwise they will spoil your Christmas and that isn’t fair.

Aquarius 21st Jan – 18th Feb Love/Family: Fun, joy and happiness is mostly what is around you but there is a strong energy of a person trying to interfere with this good feeling. Someone close to you needs to back away and allow you to be happy, plain and simple. Work/Finances: I see travel plans and a motorway. I see having to be good and not take the mickey out of everyone and everything. You are biting your tongue and having to do the right thing. Be careful when you start to relax that the naughty you doesn’t come out and upset the balance. Taurus 21st April – 21st May Love/Family: You are trying something different in life with a new friend who is leading you astray but not in a bad way in a playful way. You need to have some fun as things have been a little too stagnant. You are ready to get to know your own personality again after missing out on a certain part of yourself as you have locked it away, it will be back and you are having lots of fun! Work/Finances: I see tickets or official papers linking to travel / moving / change in your life that takes you away from you home and onwards to something exciting and new. I see travelling up a motorway and a need to get things done in an official way. I can see you signing a contract or documents / forms and sending them off. Leo 24th July – 23rd Aug Love/Family: You feel like you have everything that you wanted but there is a sense of what you wished for isn’t enough. You need more from life. It may not necessarily be someone else’s fault but it still feels the same. I can see that these emotions may be due to you not having enough to distract you and it may help to find your own life and your own happiness. Work/Finances: Has life felt like one big financial and emotional test? Are you looking for tranquillity and fun now and a little less drama? Well it’s time to throw out the old and concentrate on the new wishes. Why don’t you set aside some time to start some “Affirmations – making statements that aren’t yet true but will then become reality?” Scorpio 24th Oct – 22nd Nov Love/Family: Do you feel like your life seems to be unfair right now and that life isn’t going your way. This can be that you have got so much going on that you don’t seem to allow yourself to chill out even at this time of year. I can see that you need to take off your responsibilities and do something crazy and fun. You need laughter and lots of it. Work/Finances: A property needs some work done to it and you have to work double time to get it sorted. Please be careful with keys as there seems to be an issue with you losing them or misplacing them. I can feel that you are trying to get your home straight and orderly but there is always something else that draws you away and makes you busy. You need a rest even though you have just had one.

mmm 97

Pisces 19th Feb – 20th Mar Love/Family: Someone connected around the family is sulking and another person connected to this situation is not allowing time to resolve this matter. In the meantime there is an atmosphere and you are not happy about it. I see that this frustration will eventually make you tell people some home truths and this will then create a turning point within the dispute. Work/Finances: You are going straight to the heart of the matter linking to work finances. You are turning your life around and it is showing on the outside. I see new beginnings that turn out to be very lucrative and security is all around you. You feel blessed in many areas of life and your opinions throughout this year have been listened to as you do talk the truth and you do make sense to a lot of people.

Gemini 22nd May – 21st June Love/Family: There are happy moments around you in great abundance at this time but there are issues of unhappiness and this isn’t something that you can just block out and pretend doesn’t exist. I feel that you just need to let the emotions good or not so good wash over you and you can and will deal with each one as best you can. Work/Finances: Stop just talking about all the changes you are going to do and going to develop and going to finish and start doing it. You have the three of swords which means deal with it! You are going to the heart of the matter and dealing with any issues that have been holding you back or any issues that are going to take things to a new positive level of happiness. Virgo 24th Aug – 23rd Sept Love/Family: There is security around you at this time and you feel very happy with what is happening in your family / friendships. I can see that you have all made an effort to make this time a happy one and you love what this time of year represents. Work/Finances: A boost of confidence is coming your way and you will have planned this so well that you have nothing to worry about. You feel organised and focused in your personal life and in your financial one. I can see sunshine and happiness and a wonderful feeling of looking forward to the summer and what you have planned. Sagittarius 23rd Nov – 23rd Dec Love/Family: Letting the cat out of the bag so to speak will enlighten everyone and there is a sense of jaws dropping around the room. You will be able to move through life in a clearer way now that it’s all out there. Don’t worry about other people’s reactions as some of them already knew on the quiet but didn’t like to say. Work/Finances: A work colleague from the past will be contacting you again and making plans to meet. There is another agenda linked to them that they are not telling you about. All will be revealed to you and it’s your turn to have your jaw drop!
