t seems strange that only on one day a year do we collectively show appreciation to our nearest and dearest. Surely, you’d think, that’s something worth doing all year round? But whether you think Valentine’s Day is just a cynical marketing ploy by the greeting card companies to make us part with hard earned cash after a January of watching our spending, or a chance to spoil those with whom we share our lives, it remains a rather special event. So inside this month’s edition you’ll find a host of Kent’s finest places to visit for a romantic day out, hotels for a getaway or restaurants in which to wine and dine your beloved. And much more besides. Best of all, if you’re single, everything works just as well with your friends or family. So if you’re not in a relationship – and let’s face it plenty of us aren’t – you can enjoy them just as much. To mark February 14’s love theme who better to feature than two of the entertainment world’s most desirable personalities? First up we have Scarlet Johansson – star of the Avengers and a host of other major movies. She’s been a success since a child and everything points to her success continuing for years to come. Then we have Damian Lewis. A British actor who conquered the American TV audience with roles in Band of Brothers and, most memorably, Homeland. Both have filmed in Kent in recent years – and both are, I’m sure, the sort of people many of us would like to find ourselves on a blind date with! But perhaps the best thing about Valentine’s Day is what it represents in the year. The dark cold winter is nearing an end, and the blossom and blooms of spring are just around the corner and if you are planning to use this romantic period to pop the question, inside we have a wedding section to inspire you to make your big day extra special. In fact, when Marvel – now owned by Disney – announced its upcoming movie releases and there was no Black Widow movie, it sparked angry scenes from fans and an online campaign to demand she be given her own feature. It may well be a little latent sexism in the superhero world that deters Marvel from extending her character, but for Johansson, her career will not be adversely affected either way. And Kent has seen both sides of the actress’ talents. To be more accurate, Dover Castle has seen both sides. In 2008 she was at the iconic location to shoot scenes for the acclaimed The Other Boleyn Girl (which also filmed at Penshurst Place and Knole Place in Sevenoaks), while just two years ago she was back there with Captain America, Iron Man and the Hulk to shoot scenes for the second Avengers movie, Age of Ultron. That was a shoot which

or someone who is only 31, it’s fair to say Scarlet Johansson has achieved more in those few short years than many double her age. Not only has she won critical acclaim for roles which demonstrate her versatility as an actress, but she’s also ensured she is one of Hollywood’s most bankable box office stars. In addition to that, she’s recorded two albums – admittedly to rather limited commercial success and mixed critical reaction. And should she ever look over at her bank balance (she’s worth an estimated $55m (£38m)) or glance at her awards shelf and still feel at something of a low ebb, then she delivers when it comes to glamour too. She has the distinction of being the only woman to be chosen twice for the title Sexiest Woman Alive by Esquire magazine (in 2006 and 2013) and the Sexiest Celebrity in 2007 by Playboy magazine. What’s more, she has become one of the few leading actresses capable of sustaining the lead role in major action movies – something previously only achievable by the likes of Angelina Jolie. But courtesy of her growing reputation as Marvel creation the Black Widow in the Avengers movies and their associated spin-offs, Johansson’s star power helped the sci-fi romp Lucy pull in ten times its budget when released in 2014.

But although just 31, Johnasson is no stranger to the movie game, having landed her first role at the age of just nine. She had been bitten by the theatrical bug early. Born in 1984 in New York – her father was a Danish-born architect, her mother a movie producer and film buff. “My father barely made enough to get by,” she’s explained. “We moved house every year and finally

we settled in a housing development for lower-middle-income families. “We went to state school and depended on programmes for school lunches and transport. “But I was a big song-and-dance type of kid - you know, one of those kids with jazz hands. I liked to improvise and do weird vocal exercises,” she admits. When she was just eight years old, she appeared in an off-Broadway production of Sophistry with Ethan Hawke before going on to study at Manhattan’s Professional Children’s School where she received her theatrical training. Yet despite her fame, and all the attention which goes with it, she guards her private life fiercely. What is known is that previous boyfriends include Jack Antonoff, guitarist in the band Fun – they met when both attended that theatrical school in New York – and her co-star in the movie Black Dahlia, Josh Hartnett for two years. In 2007 she met Canadian actor Ryan Reynolds and they married a year later – moving into a £2.8m

home in Los Angeles together. Two years later, however, they had split, and were divorced by 2011. A brief relationship with Madonna’s former husband, Sean Penn, gathered headlines but no longevity, and she had a two-and-a-half-year relationship with advertising executive Nate Naylor. But she is now settled down after starting to date Frenchman Romain Dauriac in late 2012 – another advertising agency executive. In 2014 she gave birth

to their daughter, and the couple wed later that year. “It is strange for him adjusting to the spotlight,” she admits, “it’s a huge adjustment for anybody. I’m not adjusted to it, and I hope I never am, in some ways.” And her brush with the public has, at times, been rather odd: “I’ve had people come up to me on the street and be very inappropriate, or in really private settings, like the hospital or whatever. “It never ceases to amaze me, but there’s a feeling

Enjoying a great reception H

ere are a number of tips to ensure you can add some great finishing touches to your wedding reception...

Make your reception extra special and enjoy a beautiful party venue with a little bit of effort and some imagination. Make sure to set a budget Set a budget and prioritise. Make a list of everything you want, to help prevent you over spending. If you love live music then your budget will need to consider having a live band and two courses instead. Simple means elegant Place settings can look just a beautiful with a simple fresh flower as they do tied with ribbons and intricate beads. If you try to do complicated decorations yourself, you’ll find you are tied up until midnight the day before your wedding, putting yourself under too much additional pressure.

Start your planning early Start planning your reception as soon as you can. Get the larger things out of the way sooner, like finding the perfect venue and this will give you a bit more breathing space for the smaller tasks and those enjoyable finishing touches. Ask for help You don’t need the worry of arranging something with no idea of how to go about it. Consider hiring a wedding planner who can co-ordinate the day for you, from finding and booking the venue, flowers and table decorations, to transport and catering. Wedding planners work closely with you so they can make sure you get everything you want, and it will provide that extra reassurance. Also don’t be afraid to delegate to help take the pressure off you and your fiancé. Make

sure you keep a check of those you’re delegating to and make sure they are making progress with those things. Your day, your way Make sure you have your wedding your way, and not someone else’s. It is easy, and sometimes very helpful to get opinions from your friends and family, you mustn’t forget whose wedding it actually is. Make sure you do what is right for you.

Create a first impression The entrance will create a first impression for your reception and guests. Make sure to use flowers and topiary or line your entrance in silk, but whatever you do, make sure your guests get a great first and lasting impression.

Choose enjoyment over etiquette Don’t get buried with etiquette – receiving lines and getting the order of the speeches right are not the be all and end all.

Consider lighting carefully You don’t have to stick to conventional lighting for your venue. Getting the right ambience to suit your theme is key, so consider candlebras, tea lights and fairy lights to create a moody, yet romantic feeling. Consider how you’ll illuminate your reception when the lights go off at night or for any areas outside.

Taming your timings Keep an eye on your timings. Ideally you should have a maximum of about three hours from the ceremony to sitting down for your meal. If you try to stretch this time you may find that some of your guests get tired and emotional, or even a little bored.

Making your receptions sparkle Fireworks are defiantly a beautiful addition, and can allow your photographer to get some romantic snaps of you and your fiancé and with your guests. Sparklers are also a fun way to entertain children and create light painting images.

Reduce your responsibilities You should ask a member of the bridal party to take control on the day to help lessen the pressure. They can then liaise with the venue, caterer and entertainment as the last thing you should and want to be thinking about is whether the DJ knows where he is going.

Add those extra finishing touches Add a few extra finishing touches to make your reception even more fun and enjoyable. Personalised favours, a table magician or caricature artist will go down a treat.

Keeping children occupied Make sure you keep the children entertained. Goody bags with crayons and colouring books are ideal for the dinner table, and you could hire an entertainer for an hour or two – perhaps a magician or a face painter.

Enjoy yourself And last but not least, your wedding day is meant to be the best day of your life and if there’s a small hiccup – like the beautiful weather you were sure you’d booked failed to materialise – then c’est la vie; the most important thing is celebrating your marriage with loved ones.

Ten dos and don’ts to pay attention to

ou’ve got the dress sorted, now it’s time to think about wedding beauty. We’ve put together these 20 bridal make-up tips

Use individual eyelashes – they’re a brilliant way to make your eyes stand out and look far more subtle than a full strip. Go for differing lengths to create a really natural fluttery look and nestle them in between your natural lashes rather than fixing them on top.

Do: Make sure you have your trial at least three weeks, but no more than five weeks, before your wedding. If you plan on using fake tan for the big day, have a test run before your make-up trial so that your artist can see what colour your skin becomes with the tan.

Wear a white t-shirt if you’re having your make-up test in a store so that you can see how the make-up looks against a pale colour and take a picture of yourself in day light (with no flash) to see how it looks before you purchase anything.

Emphasize your eyes by brightening any darkness under them with corrector and concealer.

Bring references to your make-up trial. Start looking for images of makeup that you really like and bring them with you on the day. Try to identify what it is you like about the make-up in the image and take into account that if you have the skin colour of Dita Von Teese then the make-up of Kim Kardashian won’t necessarily compliment onto you.

Remember that bridal make-up needs to have enough colour to compensate for the whiteness of the dress. There’s a big difference between everyday clothes and a wedding dress, so there should be difference in your make-up, too. Start by making sure your skin looks even and smooth, and then add colour to your cheeks and lips to give them a glow.

Focus on the most important elements of your look, such as beautifully natural-looking skin, softly groomed brows and feathery lashes. If you get these basic factors right the rest of your make-up will fall into place.

Research application methods as they might differ slightly from your everyday make-up routine. For example, if you prefer to line with a shadow, make it last longer by applying it with a slightly damp eyeliner brush.

Don’t: Have your make-up test done anywhere with overhead fluorescent lighting. If you have a professional make-up artist coming to your home, arrange a time when it’s still daylight outside. Let a make-up artist hijack your look. For a lot of people, their wedding is a time when they can really take pleasure in having someone else do their make-up, there can be a temptation to just indulge in the experience and take on all sorts of suggestions from the make-up artist.

Trowel it on. It’s a total myth that your makeup has to be plastered on for the photographs. Lots of wedding photography is done in natural light, and if you choose a heavy base the make-up will look obvious. In terms of flash, you just need to ensure that your ‘T’ Zone is matte and that can be achieved with fine translucent powders and blotting powders.

Go for anything too trend-led. It’s worth bearing in mind that you’ll have to live with photos from your wedding for the rest of your life, so it’s best to avoid statement looks and opt for something more classic; that glittery eyeliner you saw on a Parisian catwalk might look beautiful and modern now, but chances are it’ll look tired and dated in twenty years’ time.

Be scared of going a bit brighter. Neutral, brown, and pale lip colours can look washed out in photographs, so choose a lipstick that’s one or two shades brighter than what you would normally wear. If you typically wear dark lipstick, use that as the base, and apply a brighter pink on top to give the colour a lift. Pinks, roses and plums are all great, classic choices for brides.

Just apply make-up to your face. Instead, extend down your neck and over your shoulders if necessary, this will ensure you face is not a different colour or even texture to your body. Everything should look

uniform to create the most natural look possible. An easy way to blend uneven skin tones together is to use a light fake tan.

Forget to decide what kind of maintenance you’d prefer for the day. For example, are you happy to check you’re looking okay throughout the day, or do you want to just forget about your make-up once it’s on? Waterproof mascara is an obvious requisite, but it’s also worth considering cream eyeshadows that really set - you can be sure they’ll stay where you put them.

Go too dark on the eyes. Define your eyes by applying colour in the crease, but avoid using a shade that’s too dense, as it can detract from the eyes themselves. Go too glossy or too matte. It’s best to avoid lipsticks at either end of the texture scale; too glossy and they’ll only last five minutes whilst too matte and they may leave your lips dry and cakey by the time it’s the moment to kiss your groom. A moisturising, satiny finish lipstick is best for a wedding - this kind of formula will keep your lips looking their best and will wear off the most evenly and naturally; several thin layers, blotted between applications will give the most long-lasting finish.

Rush. Allow at least 45 minutes to an hour for make-up application on the wedding day.

So what’s the secret? Visit a good quality store, where you feel comfortable and take the time to try on a variety of styles and colours. Sure, it may be traditional for a man to wear a grey morning suit if he’s not opted for top hat and tails, but there are no rules. If he feels more comfortable in navy or black, then he’ll relax and enjoy the big day, so ensuring he exudes the confidence every groom needs. After all, he’s got a long wait checking his watch at the end of the aisle - there’s only room for one latecomer on the biggest day of your lives...

ettina McCue from our Baldwins Travel Tonbridge branch travelled to South Africa as part of a small select group of travel agents last September with one of our specialist tour operators, Premier Holidays, to take in a game reserve experience, the garden route, Winelands and Cape Town. Flying to Port Elizabeth on board South African Airways from Heathrow terminal two, the evening flight was a great choice as it gives the opportunity to sleep during the journey, and with only a one hour time difference (two in our winter time) you can feel refreshed and ready to go on your arrival into the Rainbow Nation. On landing in Port Elizabeth that morning the group were collected and driven up to the Kariega Game Reserve on the Eastern Cape, around an hour and a half north-east of Port Elizabeth. The reserves here are all non-malarial so a great choice for families too. There was such a friendly welcome offered by the team at the luxurious Settler’s Drift Lodge, one of the reserve’s four lodges which offer a unique, five star safari experience. With one hour to get settled into the stunning open plan lodge rooms, Bettina was soon out on the two and a half hour evening game drive taking in the amazing wildfife and stunning scenery, complete with a stop in the wilderness for a glass of South African wine and a lovely tapas-style picnic. This certainly was a great

aperitif for the superb evening meal back at the lodge topped off with nightcaps around the Boma (a camp fire enclosure). The small time difference meant getting up for the early morning game drive which didn’t seem too much of a hardship, especially as it included an exciting boat trip along the Bushman’s River before the jeep safari. During the morning adventures the group ticked off lions, elephants, zebra, antelope, springboks, giraffe and many other animals in their natural habitat – an amazing experience. Bettina also managed to get to view the other three lodges within Kariega’s 10,000 hectare reserve - all of which remain luxurious yet offer alternative options for the more budget conscious traveller. On leaving the Ukhozi Lodge after a well needed lunch the trip took the group south west to the start of the famous Garden Route. Through the Tsitsikamma National Park with its amazing Storms River Bridge bungee jump and viewpoint and onwards to Plettenberg Bay to see the stunning Plettenberg Hotel - standing proudly on the rocky headland overlooking the coastline’s pristine beaches. This beautiful area is just 30 minutes away from Knysna where the group stayed overnight. It is truly a spectacular drive into Knysna with the views down across the famous lagoon and the small but bustling quayside with its shops, bars and restaurants. a

The sunrise over Knysna was amazing and breakfast on the terrace of the Belvidere Manor was a treat under clear blue skies. The overnight stay had been so comfortable in this private estate of fantastic self-catering individual cottages overlooking the west shore of Knysna’s spectacular lagoon. This relaxing retreat is a bird watcher’s paradise and is ideal for couples or families who want spacious accommodation, complete with a lovely little pub and restaurant on site. Driving the Garden Route is so easy, the roads were calm, the drivers courteous and the scenery breathtaking so it’s a must to take your time, stop for photos and to take it all in. The coastal route took us further west towards Cape Town looking out over the amazing sand dune-lined beaches which are popular for shark cage diving and whale watching. Mossel Bay was another beautiful seaside town to spend time in, with a lovely long white sandy beach to enjoy a leisurely lunch on and then stroll along the seafront to the shops and visit the museum. The next overnight stop was Hermanus overlooking the beautiful Indian Ocean - home to thousands of southern right whales. The whale migration season here runs from July to November with frequent boat trips sailing out to Walker Bay. Bettina spotted both whale cows and calves swimming slowly together, right alongside and even underneath the boat during the thrilling three hour excursion - a real highlight of the trip which we can thoroughly recommend to all our customers. On leaving Hermanus there were scores of locals and tourists enjoying their own land-based whale watching; spotting the beautiful mammals from the cliffs along the coastal route. Just a one hour drive inland and over the mountain pass we arrived in the Winelands of Franschhoek and Stellenbosch - two stunning towns very famous for wine production in South Africa. This is the perfect place to enjoy an afternoon with an indulgent lunch and wine tasting, trying with a range of South Africa’s finest grapes. That evening the group stayed at the Oude Werf - South Africa’s oldest and most historic hotel (dating back to 1802) and very centrally located for exploring everything that Stellenbosch has to offer. After a fantastic evening meal at the 300 year old Lanzarac Manor Hotel & Spa the group were all sad to be saying goodbye to the winelands but excited about heading onwards to Cape Town, just a 45 minute drive away! Stopping at the centrally located Townhouse hotel for a quick coffee and hotel inspection, the group were then able to set out exploring the city’s famous V&A waterfront area to experience the sights, the shops and the atmosphere as well as checking out the many local bars and restaurants dotted around the marina. Some of the best hotels in Cape Town are also located here and Bettina made all her friends jealous as she got to spend time lunching at the amazing five star Cape Grace. A short distance away, driving out of the V&A and past the famous Cape Town stadium there is the slightly quieter Sea Point Promenade where some customers prefer to stay in calmer surrounds at hotels like the Winchester Mansions. This lovely hotel overlooks the Ocean and out to Robben Island where Nelson Mandela was held prisoner for 27 years. No visit to Cape Town is complete without a trip over to take in a tour hosted by former political prisoners like Zozo who walked the grounds with our group and retold the most amazing stories of his five years there with Mandela. This tour is a captivating and most amazing history lesson - a completely moving experience. a TRAVEL FEATURE

Sailing back across from the island to Cape Town it was amazing for the group to watch as the layer of cloud (known as the ‘tablecloth’) lifted off Table Mountain to reveal the most spectacular views. They say when you visit, if at any time the mountain appears clear then take to the cable car as soon as possible as the cloud cover is so unpredictable. So the decision was made and the group were rewarded with clear and breathtaking panoramic views to all sides over Cape Town and beyond and some truly memorable photographs. Other experiences to complete this fabulous visit to South Africa and Cape Town included time in

very cosmopolitan and exclusive seaside suburb of Camps Bay staying at the magnificent Twelve Apostles hotel. From there it is only a one hour journey to Boulders Beach in Simon’s Town to see the famous African penguins playing from the wooden boardwalks, and another 30 minutes on to the Cape of Good Hope. You can take in both within an organised excursion for those who do not want to drive in and around Cape Town itself. A final evening at a traditional supper club show and sundowner drinks on the V&A Waterfront seemed the perfect way to spend a final night in South Africa. What will you do on yours?

DRINK WATER

First and foremost, drink water before you eat to fill you up more, you might not actually be hungry, but you might be thirsty. Drink water if you’ve eaten unhealthily too, it will help flush toxins out. Try and drink water in general, because being hydrated will make you feel good both inside and out. It’s always handy to carry a large bottle of water everywhere with you so you can continue drinking water rather than energy or fizzy drinks.

EXERCISE TO SUPPORT, NOT STRAIN, YOUR HEART We often believe that exercising more and faster is better. However lower-intensity exercise is healthier than exercise that’s high stress and high intensity. Overdoing high intensity workouts will do more harm than good to you and your body. Take your time not to overdo workouts and make sure not to strain yourself. Take time to relax and rejuvenate surrounded by nature. Stress is bad for the heart. At least once a day, if you can, go outdoors and connect with nature. Breathe in fresh air and feel the sun on your skin. Doing anything outside, whether it’s taking a walk or sitting in the park, signiﬁcantly reduces stress hormones and lowers blood pressure, which beneﬁts your heart.

STAY MOTIVATED

To stay committed, you need to be focused. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to change your habits. You must undertake diet and exercise changes to please yourself. What’s going to give you the burning drive to stick to your plan? Make a list of what’s important to you, to help stay motivated and focused.

EAT MORE HEART-HEALTHY FOODS

There are certain foods that are heart protective because they contain omega 3 and other healthy fats, critical vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytonutrients that help keep heart tissues healthy. Here’s a partial list of foods you should eat more of: salmon, ground flaxseed, oatmeal, black or pinto beans, raw almonds, walnuts, and brown rice. Among the many heart-healthy fresh fruits and vegetables, that are especially beneficial are included: orange vegetables, spinach, broccoli, tomatoes, asparagus, orange fruits and blueberries.

GET 6-8 HOURS OF SLEEP AT NIGHT Some studies have found that getting too little or too much sleep is bad for the heart, increasing one’s risk of heart disease. However, there’s another good reason to work on getting the right amount of sleep.

THE BENEFITS of eating porridge

orridge, a warm breakfast cereal akin to Scottish cuisine, is oatmeal that has been boiled and prepared slowly until a thick consistency is reached. As this grain derivative packs a generous amount of nutrients, it makes a good addition to a meal plan or an adequate substitute for unhealthy fare.

A cup of cooked porridge contains about 4 grams of fibre. Men should try to consume at least 30 grams a day, while women should eat 20 grams. Adding berries, seeds and nuts to the porridge increases its fibre content.

ENERGY

Carbohydrates are macronutrients needed for optimal brain function and energy through the course of the day. Porridge contains a high amount of complex carbohydrates, which get digested at a slow pace, unlike simple carbs. This gives you lasting energy. A 1-cup serving contains just over 27 grams of carbs. Adding fruit, honey, brown sugar or milk to your porridge will boost the carbohydrate content of your meal and increase the calories. Milk also contains a moderate amount of protein.

OXYGEN TRANSPORT

Iron is used for the production of myoglobin and haemoglobin, which join forces with red blood cells to carry oxygen to the muscles and all other areas of the body. Porridge has a generous amount of this mineral. One cup contains about 14

milligrams. Women aged 19 to 50 should get 1,000 milligrams, but women ages 51 to 70 should get 1,200 milligrams. One cup of porridge contains about 187 milligrams. By preparing your gruel with milk, you will boost the calcium content of the meal.

IMMUNITY BOOSTING

Vitamin A is a fat-soluble vitamin that the body needs for vision, cell and tissue growth and reproduction. It is also an antioxidant, which helps destroy free radicals and reduce the risk of chronic disease. A 1-cup serving of porridge supplies more than 1,450 international units of vitamin A. The recommended daily value of this vitamin is 3,000 international units for men over 19 years old and 2,300 international units for women in this same age group.

ach vegetable has a prime time when it’s at its seasonal best. Some are great for over half of the year; others only hit their peak for a month. Either way it means extra flavour, extra crunch, extra juiciness—all super-fresh and great value. Find out what’s in season this month and how to bring out its best.

LEEKS

If you haven’t ever tried preparing leeks, February is the month to experiment; this vegetable is at its best during the coldest months of the year. Similar to asparagus in texture, the leek is related to the onion, but has a milder flavour. Leeks can be roasted or baked, with a touch of lemon juice, as a side dish, but they also do well in omelettes, fritatta and soups.

CAULIFLOWER

There is more to create with cauliflower than just a cauliflower cheese. A few other options include lightly steaming or roasting a cauliflower. If you enjoy Indian food, try adding cumin, turmeric, chilli or ginger to bring out the flavour, or prepare a creamy soup. You can do this by pureeing cooked cauliflower with vegetable stock and milk and stirring in crumbles of your favourite blue cheese.

TURNIPS

The right preparation makes all the difference. I definitely prefer smaller turnips, which are sweeter and tenderer than the larger ones. You can slice off the skin, cut the turnip into small chunks and add to a casserole or curry. Or you can shave the vegetable raw and add it to salads. If you prefer to roast turnips, you need to know that their flavour intensifies during cooking, so you don’t want to cook them for too long.

Method • Preheat the oven to 200ºC, gas mark 6. e live in an era where perhaps the finest drama being delivered on a regular basis comes not from the stage or even the big movie screen, but courtesy of an explosion of superlative television programmes. The rise of the box-set – both in stores and on-demand – has given popular shows an extended life span that rivals that of their silver screen companions. And among the likes of Game of Thrones, 24, Breaking Bad, Mad Men and House of Cards sits Homeland, a show once named as President Barack Obama’s favourite. What’s more it is that rarest of treats in the UK – a show still available via a good old freeto-air terrestrial channel. Channel 4’s ability to cling on to the show – unlike, for example, its capitulation with Lost when Sky’s

deep pockets lured the bizarre drama to its paid-for Sky One channel – has ensured the widest possible audience for a show which drew the curtain on its fifth season in December. But although – spoiler alert – Damian Lewis has long since left the show, he remains perhaps ever entwined with its co-star Claire Danes as the face of Homeland. As Nicholas Brody – the US Army sergeant freed from capture in the Middle East (just whose side is he on?) – his on-screen performance saw both he and Danes bombarded with award nominations and both walk away with Emmys. a

As the roles kept rolling in on both sides of the Atlantic he married, in 2007, actress Helen McCrory – perhaps best known for her theatre work, she’s also been Narcissa Malfoy in the final three installments of the Harry Potter films, in addition to parts in The Queen, Hugo and Bond ﬂick Skyfall. The couple already had a daughter and a son on the way. “She is incredibly generous and happy for me. She’s phenomenal,” Lewis says of his wife. An OBE for services to drama in 2014 added the final ﬂourish to a quite remarkable career thus far and one which shows no signs of slowing just yet. Which, for his millions of fans, is just the way they want it. mmm

“My parents were incredibly inclusive,” he recalls. “They discussed boarding school with us and said if we didn’t like it we could go to a day school. But I was a pretty manic kid aged seven. I kept getting into trouble. I actually wanted to get away.” And after a rocky start, he enjoyed the freedom and the opportunities. “Each summer we staged a Gilbert and Sullivan operetta. It was all so English. I used to sing the solos. I had a sweet treble voice.” At 16 he decided he wanted to pursue a career as an actor, even forming his own theatre company. He attended the Guildhall School of Music and Drama – where class mates included Ewan MacGregor and Daniel Craig - before joining the Royal Shakespeare Company. But it was his role in Jonathan Kent’s Hamlet that brought him to the attention of movie director legend Steven Spielberg – then searching for the cast for his big budget Second World War drama Band of Brothers that he was putting together, alongside actor Tom Hanks. The 2001 show would catapult Lewis into the big time as he portrayed Richard Winters – one of the lead roles. And one which would land him a Golden Globe nomination. Being handed the role itself proved something of a whirlwind. He read for the part in London and 48 hours later was in Los Angeles meeting Tom Hanks. “I met Tom Hanks on the Friday and he was very enthusiastic but I didn’t think I’d got the part so I went out on the town with a mate until five in the morning. “Then at 8am I get this phone call, that wakes me up, from the casting director telling me Spielberg wants to meet me. I had four showers but I still felt drunk.” Returning to the UK and his now global celebrity, he appeared a number of times as guest presenter on Have I Got News For You. CELEBRITY FEATURE

One of the prize trees at Emmetts is a giant Wellingtonia which is thought to be the tallest tree in Kent. The great storm of 1987 which devastated the area felled many large trees including 80 foot Oaks and Beeches, but it did at least open up unobstructed views over the Weald of Kent as far as the North Downs in one direction and Crowborough Beacon in the other. There is a pleasant enclosed rock garden that has recently been restored. In the spring there are carpets of Daffodils, azaleas and the bluebell woods, followed in the autumn with a splendid display of colour from the many varieties of trees and shrubs. But there is something to see at most times of the year, the views alone make a visit worth while.

vivid orange Lamborghini Miura – arguably the most famous Lamborghini in the world, no less – is making a bid for Italian glory as teams of classic cars line up for a unique Six Nations contest at the London Classic Car Show to find the world’s leading car producing country. The Miura, chassis number 3586, is the actual car used in the opening scene to 1969’s The Italian Job film. Although apparently written off in an Alpine tunnel, the car in fact was undamaged and sold to a customer after filming… the actual wreck that was pushed down the mountainside in the movie by the mafia-controlled bulldozer in fact was another Miura that had already been badly damaged in a crash.

The legendary Lamborghini will join Ferraris and Fiats, Lancias and Maseratis in the Italian squad as they take on teams from Great Britain, France, Germany, Japan and America. The winning team will be decided by the hearts and minds of visitors to the show, to be held at the ExCeL centre in London’s Docklands. As 2016 marks the 50th anniversary of the Miura and the centenary of the birth of company founder Ferruccio Lamborghini, its appearance for the Italian squad is highly appropriate. More cars are being added in the movie and being announced via the show’s social media platforms. When the show opens its doors on Thursday, 18th February, a total of 60 cars – ten from each nation – will line up on the extended Grand Avenue, the a

Richard Hearne with family and friends after being seen on ‘This is your Life

Show. This was the ﬁrst of many appearances which gradually commanded massive audience numbers as the Americans warmed to his slapstick humour. By now his character was universally known all over the UK and America. In 1959 he was the subject of the TV programme ‘This is your Life’. Friends and family gathered at the BBC studio to reminisce over a lifetime of laughter provided by Mr Pastry. In 1963 he became president of the Lord’s Taverners charity, a show business organisation that provides help and support to underprivileged children. During his presidency he raised money to provide eleven special hydrotherapy swimming pools for disabled children as well as supporting many other projects. For this charitable work he was awarded the OBE in 1970.

For many years Richard lived with his wife Yvonne and two daughters at Platt Farm, a 15th century property in the village of St Mary Platt. The house had fallen into disrepair resulting in Richard undertaking a period of renovation. He soon discovered many hidden treasures such as open hearth ﬁreplaces and a wealth of oak timbering. After several years of hard work the building was classiﬁed under the title of ‘Buildings and Monuments of Historical Interest’. This meant that it was protected by law from any structural alteration or demolition. It was in the shadow of this beautiful house that the Hearne family held many garden parties during the summer in aid of the charities. They were attended not only by family and friends but also by familiar faces from show business.

Richard Hearne alias Mr Pastry lived a rich and full life. When he died on August 23rd 1979 the world of entertainment mourned his passing. To many children and adults of that period, he was one of the funniest men on stage and screen. He was laid to rest in the churchyard of his local church St.Mary’s Platt beneath the shadow of a large tree. His memory lives on through his ﬁlms of which he made many. TURNER CONTEMPORARY SMASHES ITS ANNUAL VISIT TARGET TWO MONTHS AHEAD OF SCHEDULE Turner Contemporary has reached its annual visit target for 2015-16, two months ahead of schedule. Between 1st April 2015 and 17th January 2016, Turner Contemporary has achieved a total of 352,204 visits to the gallery. Risk attracted 81,103 visits, making it the gallery’s most successful autumn exhibition since opening year. The exhibition has helped Turner Contemporary achieve nearly 1.9 million visits since opening in April 2011. As the first major UK exhibition to explore risktaking in art, Risk encapsulates the ethos of the organisation. Turner Contemporary is a place where innovative projects, risks are taken and dynamic new ways of helping visitors to see the world differently are developed. Victoria Pomery, Director of Turner Contemporary, said:“Turner Contemporary continues to bring large numbers of new visitors to Margate. As we celebrate our fifth anniversary year in 2016, it’s remarkable that our pioneering vision all those years ago has transformed Margate and East Kent. The gallery’s fifth anniversary year programme continues to be ambitious with a series of extraordinary exhibitions, new commissions, events and activities. BUCKMORE PARK UPGRADES FOR 2016 Buckmore Park Karting is undertaking a major circuit upgrade for 2016 with the installation of new purpose built Champion Products foam barriers and extended tarmac run-off areas and improved drainage. Along with upgrades to the timing system, track lighting, on-track cameras, video screens and track maintenance equipment, Buckmore Park has appointed new caterers, the Pit Stop Catering Company, to supply an improved first rate service to corporate clients, racers and visitors alike. As well as improving safety at the track, the objective is to improve the overall image and racing experience at the famous venue. MUM FULFILS LIFELONG DREAM BY TAKING ON LOCAL PUB A Maidstone mum has fulfilled a lifelong dream by becoming licensee of her local pub, The Dragoon. Clare Parslow, 56, officially took over the Shepherd Neame pub in Sandling Road, Maidstone. Clare, who grew up in Maidstone and attended South Borough Girls School in the town, has worked in pubs for more than 20 years, after starting out behind the bar at The Dragoon.

She said: “The Dragoon was the first pub I ever worked in, so it holds a lot of memories for me. Bar work was great while my children were growing up as it was flexible, and I loved the social element of it, particularly meeting new people. I had always dreamed of running my own pub, and now my children are older, aged between 17 and 36, I thought it was the right time to do something for myself. When I heard The Dragoon was available, it seemed the perfect opportunity.” Clare said: “It was quite daunting, as although I have worked in pubs for years I have never run one before, but Shepherd Neame provided lots of help and I took courses on areas such as cellar management and health and safety before moving in. My husband Geoffrey has been a huge support, and I have also been made to feel really welcome by the customers, which is lovely. BRITISH SIDECAR CHAMPION ON TRAIL TO SUCCESS AT DISCOVERY PARK Ryan Charlwood is already a household name for fans of high octane superbike racing having being part of the team which retained the British Sidecar Championship title at the world famous Silverstone track last autumn. And with his new online pre-booked parking business Parking More, this ambitious 27-year old entrepreneur from Dover is now seeking to bring that same level of success to Discovery Park. The web-focused company currently has a team of four but Ryan intends to grow to 16 staff within 12 months and establish the firm as a key employer in the area for young people – giving them the opportunity to develop digital skills. “We soft launched the company in December, but from this month we’re really going hell for leather in terms of getting our name out there and get bookings for our customers and save them money too,” Ryan said. “I’d left a job last summer with the market leader for airport parking with the intention of focusing on my superbiking as a career but realised I could put my experience to good use by going it alone. “And so while I still intend to keep my hand in – not least because we’ve just signed a new contract with Kawasaki – that will remain my side line and hobby as I build up Parking More at Discovery Park. “We already have access to 100 parking sites around the UK with customers able to use our fully responsive website to click and book from a choice of airport and town centre sites. “One of the things we will offer customers – in addition to savings on their parking – is a trust guarantee that we check each and every car park to ensure it meets the standard they expect.” As for the reasons for selecting Discovery Park, Ryan said it was the site’s wow factor that drew him back to a site he had known well as a child with his father owning a haulage business close by. “I knew Discovery Park well and decided to go in and have a look to see if it would be suitable for my business. THE HISTORIC DOCKYARD CHATHAM’S CHIEF EXECUTIVE IS APPOINTED ONE OF THE NEW DEPUTY LIEUTENANTS OF KENT Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust’s Chief Executive has been appointed as one of four new Deputy Lieutenants of Kent - each of them honoured for their positive contributions to the County and the Nation. Mr Bill Ferris OBE DL has been involved with and led a number of heritage and tourism projects in Kent over the past 26 years. He has operated in Tunbridge Wells, Dover and Canterbury as well as nationally; and has been Chief Executive of Chatham Historic Dockyard Trust since 2000 where the strategy of “preservation through re-use” has transformed the most complete dockyard of the age of sail into a world class visitor attraction and thriving residential and business community. Bill has served on the Visit Kent Board for a number of years and has only recently stepped down as chair of the national Association of Independent Museums with more than 1000 members. Viscount De L’Isle MBE said: “In making these appointments we are further strengthening a team of men and women who share their great experience, in helping me support The Queen and her family throughout the ceremonial county of Kent”.

Mr Ferris said; “It is an absolute honour to be recognised for my positive contribution to Kent – and comes as quite a surprise! Big Cat Encounter

Enjoy a tour of the beautiful sanctuary during which you will see and learn about a diverse cross section of the cat family. You will also get up close and personal with some of the cats and even have an opportunity to hand feed one of them.

Ranger for the Day

Spend the day helping our rangers to prepare meat and assisting with feeding time, and maybe an enrichment feature for the cats, as well as an opportunity to feed one of the cats. You will see and learn about the various species throughout the day. An excellent day for those who want to get involved and go behind the scenes at the Sanctuary.

Big Cat Adoption

Adopt a WHF cat and choose one of the adopters afternoon during the year to come along to our beautiful sanctuary to meet your adopted family member as well as the other cats. You will receive a certificate and adopters pack too, this explains about the conservation work and endangered species we aim to support .

Photographic Workshops

You will be tutored on how to take amazing photographs of our stunning cats, we at WHF are proud to be the UK's â&#x20AC;&#x153;Centre of Excellence for photographyâ&#x20AC;? in both big and small cats. We are the largest collection in the UK, housed in enclosures aimed to give a natural look for first class photographic opportunities.
