elcome to the January issue of mmm – and what a special edition this is! Not only is it the first of 2017, but it is also our fifth birthday and we intend to celebrate in style this month – even if we do go easy with the fizz after the festive season. Inside you’ll find we indulge ourselves a little as we look back over the first 60 editions of your favourite Kent lifestyle magazine. There’s a special feature looking back at years of our celebrity interviews – recalling some of those who have gone on to bigger and better things, and, tragically, some who are no longer with us. We certainly felt rather nostalgic looking back over all the editions we have produced – each seems like a little time capsules of life in this great county of ours. And while you may not agree with us – and feel free to send us your suggestions - we also highlight five personalities who we believe have had a significant impact in their specialist fields over the time we have been publishing. There’s even an article I’ve penned which charts my story of how mmm came to be born and some of the remarkable characters I’ve had the pleasure of meeting along the way. I can’t quite believe how quickly the last five years have flown by. What is it they say about when you’re having fun? Of course, for most of us, January is a month of catching our breath after the excess of Christmas. It already seems such a long time ago doesn’t it? We hope you all had a wonderful time and welcomed the new year in style. Also inside you’ll find plenty of inspiring ideas if you’re still seeking resolutions to enrich your life during 2017. Plus there’s all the regular features you have come to know and love – from fashion to travel, history to business and plenty more besides. So turn inside and join in our birthday celebrations – we hope you’ll enjoy it as much as we do producing this magazine each and every month. We feel confident there is no better way to get a new year under way than with a new edition of mmm.

A NIGHT OF

a thousand stars

KENT HAS PROVED A BREEDING GROUND FOR SUCH AN ARRAY OF TALENT - WE TAKE A LOOK BACK AT THOSE WE’VE FEATURED OVER OUR FIRST 60 EDITIONS

I

F mmm were a Hollywood movie, it is fair to say that the array of talent we have put before your eyes over our five years, would comfortably be the most star-studded line-up ever to grace the big screen. With all our stars having a connection to Kent – whether they grew up, filmed or performed here – we have ensured there’s always a strong link with the county. We seek to provide you an insight into the lives of some of the most remarkable characters. Our diverse array of talent has certainly seen a liberal sprinkling of stardust over our first 60 issues. We’ve featured everyone from royals,

actors, singers and dancers to comedians, designers and sports stars. All of them memorable. Our home grown stars have included Canterbury’s Paul Hollywood, the baker who five years ago was barely known. Yet today is a household name courtesy of his role as a judge on the Great British Bake Off. “It shouldn’t work,” he said of the show, “but it does. And it’s because of all the different cogs. Take one cog out and it won’t work. “Where it works, it is nostalgia. It’s something which takes people back to watching their parents or grandparents cook when they were a kid.”

Continued from page 13

He may perhaps be hoping he was wrong about the different cogs after he remained the only original cog to follow the show to Channel 4 earlier this year. In 2012 we featured Peaches Geldof – daughter of Live Aid hero Bob. She grew up in Faversham and was determined to make her own way in life, despite her famous surname. We could never have realised when we wrote “born into celebrity and a cauldron of tabloid interest, it is hard to think that Peaches will spend much time outside of the headlines” that those headlines would include her tragic early death following a heroin overdose just two years later. We added: “For now, though, her focus is on her son and ensuring his upbringing is not as fractured as her own.” Poor Peaches ironically followed her mother, Paula Yates, to a similar death. She was just 25 when her body was discovered at the home she shared with her husband in Wrotham. From Daniel Craig admitting

Catherine Zeta Jones remembering how it was filming in Pluckley, near Ashford, which catapulted her into a world unlike anything else

“” he found fame “scary” as he jumped on the James Bond juggernaut – a creation of Ian Fleming who lived in the county - to household name status, to Catherine Zeta Jones remembering how it was filming in Pluckley, near Ashford, which catapulted her into a world unlike anything else. “Everything changed after the Darling Buds of May,” she explained, “it was like one hour of television transformed my life.” To Harry Hill, who grew up in Staplehurst, confiding his time as a doctor saw him “doing 100 hours a week with no guarantee of a job at the end” prompting him to instead pursue a career in comedy. From Sevenoaks’ Anton Du Beke admitting he had his head turned towards a career in what would make him famous by the opposite sex. He explained in our pages: “One day I just wandered into a dance class full of girls and that was it. I thought, ‘Hang on! I’ll have a bit of this’.” To Maidstone’s Denise van Outen’s battle with getting older. “I do feel 20 inside,” we reported, “I think you always feel young inside. My nan was in her eighties and she still felt 19.” A sentiment we can all share. We had a very special interview with 

New Year’s RESOLUTIONS AS MEMORIES OF THE FESTIVE SEASON BEGIN TO FADE TAKE NOTE OF SOME OF OUR TOP NEW YEARS RESOLUTIONS hile many resolutions may have already hit the rocks, there’s no time like the present to make those changes you’ve always wanted to. Here are ten of the most popular...how many have you tried in the past?

W

STAY AND KEEP FIT

Well, none of us are getting any younger are we? So what better way to put a spring in your step than by improving your health? You don’t have to join an expensive gym to make a difference, of course. Taking up running only needs a decent pair of trainers, while going for a brisk walk will also get the blood pumping. And if you manage to achieve this first one, the second most popular resolution tends to follow hot on its heels.

READ MORE BOOKS

Reports of the death of the book have been greatly exaggerated. While the world may be ever more technologically advanced, the desire for a good read never dwindles. Just ask Amazon. Its Kindles – the handheld e-readers where you can buy books online and have them ready to read in seconds – have breathed new life into the industry. So no more excuses. Get motivated and read some classics now.

SAVE YOUR PENNIES

Now this really is easier said than done. Especially right now. With the constant strain from rising fuel prices meaning heating our homes and driving our cars is ever more expensive, trying to put a few pennies aside for a rainy day is more and more difficult. Especially when interest rates for savings are so low. But it can be done. And the best way is to conduct a full review of your out-goings. The chances are that by saving on the odd takeaway or a meal out you’ll soon find those savings adding up.

DO SOMETHING CRAZY

LIVE WITHIN YOUR MEANS

The most important New Year resolution for 2017 is to live within your means. Economic conditions are still difficult, and there are many people worse off than you. However, there are also many things you can do to save money and avoid debt. Look for bargain brands when it comes to buying food, bathroom, and cleaning products. One of the biggest rip offs is the toothbrush and toothpaste business. Buy the cheapest of both and you won’t notice the difference. Next look at your utility bills. Are you paying the cheapest rates for gas, electric, water, phone and internet? Switching companies, or combining two utilities with the same company can save money. To save even more, turn off the heating and wear an extra layer of clothing. Look at your travel costs; would catching a bus or train be cheaper than using the car? Research railcards and bus passes to find the best bargains.

How about seeing a bit more of the world? Take an adventure, even if it’s just a hike in your local woods. The therapeutic effects of opening your senses to the sights, sounds and scents of nature are well documented. How about giving skydiving, hang gliding, or bungee jumping a go? Make 20167a year to remember!

I enjoy running, cycling, obstacle races, teaching classes and plan on my first triathlon in the near future. To find out how I reached this within 18 months contact me or have a PT taster down here at the Village Gym, and get youself on your own journey. HI I’M JAMES...

Ever since I can remember I have been involved in competitive sports, until I had a lower back injury in my late teens that prevented me from continuing with sport. The two things that I did gain from that experience were knowing how difficult and determined you have to be to come back from an injury and also wanting to dedicate my career to helping others achieve their health and fitness goals! I specialize in weight management and weight training. Whether it’s packing on some lean muscle, reducing body fat or looking to take that first step to learning the correct techniques and form for weight lifting. I work with my clients step by step to help them get to where they want to be.

DIETING TIPS for the New Year FIND DIETING A STRUGGLE? WELL mmm IS ON HAND TO OFFER YOU SOME SIMPLE AND SAFE DIETING TIPS TO HELP YOU REACH YOUR PERSONAL GOALS

LOSE THE SALT

Sodium contributes to water retention, making you look and feel bloated. Do you eat too much salt? Probably — the suggested daily intake is no more than 2,400 milligrams of sodium (or about one teaspoon), but most of us are getting more than twice that amount. So keep an eye on your sodium intake, and that doesn’t just mean ditching the saltshaker. Hidden sources include soups, canned foods and drinks, salty snacks such as chips and pretzels and many prepackaged foods.

BUY A SET OF WEIGHTS

Two thirds of Brits want to lose weight and just 14% of us are completely happy with our bodies

It’s a one time investment you’ll never regret. Here’s why: Strength training builds lean muscle tissue, which burns more calories, at work or at rest 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The more lean muscle you have, the faster you’ll slim down. How do you start strength training? Try some push-ups or a few squats or lunges. Use your free weights to perform simple bicep curls or tricep pulls right in your home or office. Do these exercises three to four times per week, and you’ll soon see a rapid improvement in your physique.

Continued from page 37

AVOID CALORIES IN A GLASS

Scientists now know that the body does not register liquid calories in the same way it does solid calories. Drinking a grande caffe mocha, for instance, won’t make you feel satiated the way eating a bowl of pasta will. Which means that although the caffe mocha actually has a greater number of calories than the pasta, you’re still more likely to want a second cup rather than another plate of linguine. So monitor your intake of juice, soda, coffee drinks and wine. If you consume one of each of those beverages during the day, you’ll have taken in at least 800 extra calories by night time.

17%

of us cite the added cost of food as the main reason for abandoning our eating plans

EAT EVERY MEAL

Skipping meals will not make you lose weight faster. That strategy backfires because your body thinks food is in short supply, so it slows your metabolism in order to conserve energy. Over time, the result is that when you do eat, even if you consume the same foods as always, your body will be slower to use the calories as fuel, thus creating a backlog of unwanted pounds. If a hectic day makes a sit-down meal impossible, stash an energy bar or a piece of fruit in your purse or briefcase anything that will keep you from going hungry.

ADD 20 MINUTES OF EXERCISE PER DAY

If you’re on a diet, you’re probably already working out a couple of times a week. Whether you exercise or not, you can further enhance weightloss by doing a little something extra each day. Take the stairs instead of the elevator; walk to the bus, train, or all the way to the office; window-shop with your best friend rather than sit over coffee. Taking the dog out, gardening and even housework all increase the number of calories you expend. You don’t have to go for a jog to speed up weight loss. Twenty minutes of moderate exercise a day means you’ll burn approximately 700 calories extra per week.

H20, H20, H20

You’ve heard it before, and you’ll hear it again. That’s because drinking 64 ounces of water daily is one of the easiest ways to speed up weight loss. Your body needs water in order to efficiently metabolize stored fat. When you shortchange your supply, you’re likely to slow down that process, meaning it’s more difficult for you to burn calories. An easy eight glasses a day (at least!) will keep your system running smoothly. a

SPICE IT UP

Angelo Tremblay, Ph.D., Director of the division of kinesiology at Laval University, in Canada, found that eating hot peppers can boost a person’s basal metabolism (the total calories the body burns at rest). The reason? Capsaicin, a compound found in jalapeno and cayenne peppers, may increase your body’s release of stress hormones such as adrenaline, which can speed up your metabolism and your ability to burn calories. What’s more, eating hot peppers may reduce your appetite, Tremblay says, helping to curb your cravings. So spice up your stir-fried vegetables, eat low-calorie chilli or salsa, try them on salads and baked potatoes, and watch the pounds come off faster.

GET SOME SLEEP

As funny as it sounds, sleep deprivation may make you fat and not just because you’re susceptible to cases of the latenight munchies (although there’s that too). Women who get less than four hours of sleep per night have a slower metabolism than those who snooze for a full eight hours. So don’t skimp on your sleep, and you’ll be rewarded with an extra edge when it comes to shedding pounds quickly.

GO FOR AN EVENING WALK

42% of those who start their health kick on New Year’s Day will give it up within two to four weeks.

Don’t get us wrong, exercising at any time is good for you. But evening activity may be particularly beneficial because many people’s metabolism slows down toward the end of the day. Thirty minutes of aerobic activity before dinner increases your metabolic rate and may keep it elevated for another two or three hours, even after you’ve stopped moving. What this means for you: those dinner calories have less of a chance to take up permanent residence on your hips.

DON’T GO FOR THE GIMMICKS

At any given time, there are dozens of weight-loss hypes in the marketplace that claim to have the ability to take off 10 pounds in 10 days, or more. Desperation can tempt us to try anything, but we all know these schemes don’t work. Save your money, but more importantly, save yourself from the emotional pain when these gimmicks fail. Be realistic. Jump-start your weight-loss programme in ways that make sense, and not only will you be thinner, you’ll be happier too. mmm

2017 TRENDS for health and wellbeing FINALLY! THE MOMENT HAS ARRIVED: WE REVEAL THE TOP HEALTH AND WELLBEING TRENDS WE’RE GOING CRAZY FOR IN 2017

TIGER NUTS

Tiger nuts are a small root vegetable that grow in the Mediterranean and Africa. They’re a traditional food in these areas and may even have been eaten as far back as the Stone Age! Tiger nut milk is also a traditional drink in Spain. Tiger nuts are commonly found in the form of tiger nut flour – a great alternative gluten-free, grain-free flour that can be used in baking or cooking and that’s suitable for all types of diets from vegan to Paleo to nutfree. Tiger nuts are high in fibre and contain calcium, iron, magnesium and potassium, amongst other valuable nutrients. They are great when it comes to supporting the digestive system and weight loss.

ESSENTIAL OILS

Essential oils have been around for many, many years but have been a little forgotten about. Their return is in line with the 2017 theme of ‘natural’ and ‘holistic’ products. They are among the simplest natural remedies. We’re rediscovering how they can help with a plethora of modern ailments including stress and anxiety, mood, sleep, and even hormonal balance. Essential oils are gaining popularity on the beauty market too. We can see that in terms of skincare ingredients, with brands going back to basics – less is more! Essentials oils are packed with vitamins, amino acids and anti oxidants so they won’t dry your skin. Instead, they can smooth fine lines and

heal blemishes at the same time. Go for natural products, such as new What Skin Needs Hydrating Facial Serum, which combines Aloe Vera and Plantolin essential oils.

Continued from page 43

CHEWABLE PROBIOTICS FOR DENTAL CARE

People are becoming more and more concerned about their teeth and dental health. One way to help prevent against infection and the build up of bacteria is by taking probiotics in a chewable form. As well as taking care of our intestinal health, friendly bacteria also live in our mouth and help to take care of our teeth and gums too. For this reason, chewable probiotics could help to keep our oral health in check.

OMEGA 3 FROM ALGAE

Along with the 2017 trend of all things ‘natural’, there are themes of ‘environmentally friendly’ and ‘sustainability’. With this in mind, along with the rising popularity of vegan diets, the market for omega 3 from algae is only likely to increase. We know that there is a real concern about the sustainability of fish due to the over farming of our oceans. Omega 3 from algae allows us to have the benefits of the nutrient without affecting our fish stock.

CAULIFLOWER IN ALL FORMS

Cauliflower is amazingly versatile. You can pulse raw florets in a food processor to make cauliflower ‘rice’, steam it and blend to make a delicious mash, or just remove the leaves, put it in the oven and bake it whole. It’s low in carbs and calories and high in fibre, vitamin C, folate and potassium. It also contains compounds called glucosinolates, which are thought to have anti-cancer activity.

PROBIOTIC WATER

We’ve seen probiotic yoghurts and probiotic supplements of course – and even probiotic chocolate has found a niche in the market. Now probiotic water is proving popular too, as another way to naturally help our gut. Tablets are out. Different ways of getting our supplements are in. Food and drink are becoming functional – this trend is an example of how we can get the goodness of water with the added health benefits of probiotics.

Fabulous New Year Feasts FROM VEGETABLES TO VENISON, WE HAVE LAID OUT SOME WONDERFUL RECIPES FOR YOU TO CREATE THIS YEAR

COLD WEATHER FOODS

fresh produce

S

DISCOVER THE VITAMIN RICH VEGETABLES TO BRING TO YOUR TABLE THIS WINTER

parkly snowflakes, cozy blankets, rich hot chocolate… Winter has a lot going for it, but fresh produce is usually not on that list. In colder climates, eating locally through the winter can be extremely challenging. Every meal doesn’t have to revolve around potatoes and onions until April. With a bit of advanced planning and creativity, it’s possible to eat fresh fruits and vegetables with plenty of nutrients and flavour all winter long.

CABBAGE

This super and healthy, budget friendly vegetable is a close cousin to other cold weather favourites like cauliflower, Brussels sprouts, kale and broccoli. Cabbage is full of vitamins and minerals (Vitamins C and K and folate, in particular), fibre, antioxidants and anti-carcinogenic compounds called glucosinolates. Some studies claim that the spherical vegetable can even reduce cholesterol and lower the risk of cancer and diabetes. • Storage tips: Tightly wrap individual heads of cabbage in plastic and store in the refrigerator to keep fresh for up to a week. • How to eat it: Cabbage’s nutritional benefits are most pronounced when raw, so slice up a few leaves to add crunch to salads or stir fries.

ONIONS

Ideal for flavouring anything from soup to salads, to pasta or meat, onions are a yearround kitchen favourite. They might make you cry, but onions are actually pretty healthy. The unassuming vegetables are low in calories but surprisingly high in vitamin C and fibre. The oils found in onions can lower LDL cholesterol levels and raise HDL cholesterol. • Storage tips: Store onions outside the fridge (they can go soft if refrigerated) in a cool, dry place for several months. • How to eat it: Sautéed white onion spices up a flatbread pizza. HEALTHY EATING

mmm 49

CARROTS

A favourite food which is full of the antioxidant beta-carotene, a compound that converts to vitamin A in the body. Vitamin A is essential for a strong immune system and healthy eyes, skin, and mucus membranes. The orange vegetables are also loaded with vitamin C, cyanidins, and lutein, which are all antioxidants. Some studies show that eating carrots can reduce the risk of cancer and even prevent cardiovascular disease. • Storage tips: Like many root vegetables, carrots will keep in a plastic bag in the refrigerator for several weeks. • How to eat it: Bring out carrots’ natural sweetness with a side dish that combines the orange vegetables, cinnamon, orange juice, and maple syrup.

POTATOES

FRUIT AND VEGETABLE FACTS

• Beets are in season in temperate climates during autumn and spring, and are available from storage most of the year everywhere else. Fresh beets are often sold with their greens still attached. • Carrots are available from winter storage from local growers in many areas, and fresh in warmer and temperate regions. • Cauliflower may be grown, harvested, and sold year-round, but it is by nature a cool weather crop and at its best in autumn and winter and into early spring. • Onions are harvested in the autumn and then “cured” or dried a bit for storage, which is why we’re used to buying them at the supermarket.

RADICCHIO

Radicchio (pronounced ra-DIK-kio) is a member of the chicory family along with endive and escarole. Its red and white, slightly spicy and bitter leaves are loaded with vitamin C, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K. Plus, this leafy vegetable is extremely low in calories, so add it to any dish for a low calorie dose of crunch and flavour. • Storage tips: Keep it in the refrigerator wrapped in plastic for up to three weeks. • How to eat it: Sautéed radicchio adds a richness (and a good serving of vitamins and minerals) to any pasta dish.

Potatoes are starchy and high on the glycemic index, but they’re also filling, inexpensive, and boast an impressive nutritional profile including potassium, magnesium, folic acid, vitamin C, and even protein. Purple potatoes may even help to lower blood pressure and boost antioxidants. While sweet potatoes are considered a healthier choice (since they’re loaded with beta-carotene, vitamins A and C, and fibre), regular old white potatoes are still nutritious as long as you don’t fry them or mash them with lots of butter and cream. • Storage tips: Store potatoes in a dark, cool, wellventilated area for about one month. Keep potatoes away from onions and apples. At room temperature, potatoes will keep for one to two weeks. • How to eat it: Try a healthier take on the classic baked potato bar. Twice-baked potatoes stuffed with kale, broccoli, and cheddar make for a comforting meal.

Chef’s tip: Add any over ripe tomatoes you might have in the fridge to the sauce before simmering. Once cooked, the meatballs are great to eat on their own or as filling for a ciabatta bread sandwich.

COOKING METHOD • For the meat balls, put all the ingredients into a large bowl and combine. This is best done using your hands. Roll into meatballs of your preferred size. • In a large frying pan, heat the oil and brown the meatballs all over. Pop onto a baking tray and place in a preheated oven, 180C for 15 minutes. • For the sauce, heat the olive oil in a saucepan and sweat the

onion, carrot and garlic until soft. Add the tomatoes, tomato paste and chicken stock. Bring to boil and simmer for 20 minutes with the lid off to thicken. Season with salt and pepper. • To serve, combine the hot meatballs with the sauce and pour over pasta. Sprinkle over fresh basil, cubed mozzarella and toasted pine nuts.

Jerusalem Artichoke Purée • Peel the Jerusalem artichokes and place in a bowl of lemon water to stop them discolouring and oxidising. • Thinly slice the Jerusalem artichokes using a mandolin and return to the lemon water. • Strain the artichokes and pat dry using a cloth and add to the pan. • Place the butter and olive oil into a heavy base pan and heat gently until the butter starts to foam. • Cook the artichokes on a medium heat to caramelise (nut brown colour).

FIVE FOODS

To Keep You Warm And Healthy This Winter WE SPEAK TO NUTRITIONIST CASSANDRA BARNS ABOUT 5 FOODS THAT CAN KEEP YOUR WARM AND HEALTHY THIS WINTER

HOT CHOCOLATE

Hot chocolate can be good for you, as well as being a great winter warmer! Pure cocoa is actually highly nutritious, and cacao – the raw, unroasted version of cocoa – even more so. They’re rich in minerals such as magnesium and zinc, which are vital for energy and the immune system; and cacao in particular contains a wealth of antioxidant flavanols, which may have benefits for the heart and brain. For a healthier winter hot chocolate, avoid the storebought versions, which are often laden with sugar and contain very little cocoa. Instead, make your own using raw cacao powder or a raw chocolate bar, such as OMBAR raw chocolate.

GREEN TEA WITH GINGER

Try swapping your regular tea for green tea with ginger, such as Clearspring’s Organic Ginger Green Tea. Green tea is thought to boost thermogenesis – literally meaning ‘the production of heat’ – to a greater extent than normal tea, partly thanks to the flavanols it contains. This property of green tea may also help you to maintain a healthy weight, by literally encouraging the burning of fat for energy. And the flavanols have antioxidant properties too, which may benefit the skin, heart, brain and immune system. Ginger has natural warming and circulatingboosting properties and, like green tea, is thought to increase thermogenesis. Ginger is also fantastic for the digestion, and has been shown to have anti-viral and anti-bacterial activity, to help see off those winter bugs!

SEAWEED (SEA VEGETABLES)

Although it’s not an obvious warming food, seaweed could hold the secret to keeping you warm this winter. Sea vegetables are our best natural source of iodine – a mineral that’s vital for making thyroid hormone,

which controls our metabolism and body temperature. If we don’t get enough of this mineral, thyroid hormone production can slow down and we can feel the cold more acutely. Keep yours topped up by including sea vegetables such as nori, dulse or arame in your diet. They can be used to make wraps (nori), added to salads or added to soups and stews to give flavour.

PORRIDGE

What can be better than a bowl of warming porridge on a winter morning? As well as getting something hot into your tummy before you step outside, wholegrain oats break down and release their energy more slowly than a sugary breakfast cereal or a slice of toast. So they should help keep you warm – and keep your energy up – throughout the morning. They’re also a good source of vitamins B1 and B6 and magnesium, which help the body convert food to energy. I like Nairn’s Gluten Free Scottish Porridge Oats – pure wholegrain oats with nothing added. Stir a teaspoon of cinnamon into your porridge for an extra warming boost.

CINNAMON

Cinnamon is a fantastic warming winter spice that’s incredibly versatile. Try stirring a teaspoon into your porridge. Or for a delicious healthy snack, stir some into a pot of natural yoghurt with fresh berries or chopped nuts. Sprinkle it on your cappuccino, or use it to make spicy chai tea. Cinnamon may support blood sugar control, including by reducing the rise in blood sugar after a meal. So adding cinnamon to foods may help us to maintain a healthy weight and control sugar cravings – a particular benefit at this time of year!

A LOT HAS HAPPENED OVER THE FIVE YEARS SINCE mmmWAS FIRST BORN WHICH PUBLIC FIGURES HAVE BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE SINCE OUR FIRST mmm EDITION HIT THE SHELVES IN 2012? WE’VE CHOSEN FIVE CHARACTERS THAT WE BELIEVE HAVE MADE THE BIGGEST IMPACT ACROSS SHOW BUSINESS, SPORT AND POLITICS – ALL, OF COURSE, FROM THIS WONDERFUL COUNTY OF OURS.

PAUL HOLLYWOOD

Few people have enjoyed such a remarkable rise in celebrity over the last five years than baker Paul Hollywood. It was in 2011 that he first appeared on BBC2’s Great British Bake Off – a series which would grow beyond everybody’s expectations over the following years. He took the star to household name status as the show became the undisputed king of ratings – before sensationally leaving the BBC in a £75m move to Channel 4. Hollywood, who lives near Canterbury, was the only original member to follow the show across the channels and will be hoping it continues its popularity when it returns to our screens in its new home. Today Hollywood has sidelines of lucrative books and branded bread items.

ADAM GEMILI

A little over five years ago, Adam Gemili was still pondering whether a career in football was the sporting avenue for him. Today he stands as one of the world’s top sprinters having dazzled at championships and two Olympic Games. Still just 23, he announced himself by winning gold in the 2012 World Junior Championships, with a record-breaking time of 10.05 seconds in the 100m. Since then he has gone on to dazzle in the 200m too, recording the second fastest time ever by a British athlete over the distance and was the 2014 European champion. In addition, he won silver in the 100 metres and 4x100m in the 2014 Commonwealth Games. He only just missed out on success at the Rio Olympics too. What’s more he never loses sight of his Dartford roots and few would bet against him only building on his medal collection over the coming years.

MARK RYLANCE

For years Mark Rylance was renowned for being one of theatre’s most acclaimed performers, directors and playwrights. But in recent years the star, born in Ashford before his family moved to the US, has broken through into the mainstream with a string of memorable and celebrated performances on both big and small screens. His Academy Award winning

DAVID BOWIE

This month would have marked one of the world’s most influential artist’s 70th birthday. But on January 10 the world awoke to the news of his death and sparked a year of both mourning his passing and celebrating his genius. Having grown up in Kent – he lived in both Beckenham, when the borough of Bromley was still part of the county and spent time in Maidstone too – his loss was felt keenly. His last five years had seen him return from a lengthy hiatus – first with the surprising release of The Next Day, his first studio album in 10 years. Then, last year, just days before his death, his final offering – Blackstar. Critically acclaimed it would prove a fitting finale for a man whose music, fashion and art had influenced so many performers and fans alike over a career which stretched from the 1960s to the modern day.

“” he lived in both Beckenham, when the borough of Bromley was still part of the county and spent time in Maidstone too

role in Bridge of Spies catapulted him into the big time, hot on the heels of BBC drama Wolf Hall, part of which was filmed in the county. With a role in the family hit flick BFG last year cementing his status, the 56-year-old continues to prefer treading the boards in the world’s top theatres and is now one of the most in-demand performers of his generation.

NIGEL FARAGE

Love him of loathe him, there is no denying that of all of Kent’s politicians over the past five years, he has been comfortably the most influential. Which is all the more impressive given the fact that he has never served as an MP. Yet his leadership of UKIP has seen him become perhaps the most charismatic of all political leaders and one who has struck a chord with the public – many of whom had long been switched off by the Westminster elite. His relentless push to ensure Britain’s exit from the European Union may have repelled as many people as it attracted, but it ultimately bore fruit with June’s referendum result. Add to that the performance of his party in the county under his leadership – it, briefly, had only its second MP Mark Reckless in Rochester, is the main opposition party to the Conservatives in County Hall and runs Thanet District Council – it is hard to think of any single person capable of taking a party from nowhere to the top table in such a short

amount of time. For the former City trader, who lives in Westerham, another feather to his cap was added by his friendship with president-elect Donald Trump – with Farage the first British politician to meet with him following his election success in November.

“” his relentless push to ensure Britain’s exit from the European Union may have repelled as many people as it attracted

Homes and Gardens OUR AMAZING SELECTION OF KITCHEN DESIGN IDEAS AND INTERIORS ARE SURE TO GIVE YOU INSPIRATION

ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR designing your kitchen mmm DELVES INTO KITCHEN DESIGN WITH HELPFUL TIPS ON HOW YOU SHOULD CREATE THE PERFECT ONE

T

he art of designing a good kitchen isn’t so much to do with the way it looks but the way it functions. And the first step is finding the layout that best suits the space, as it is this that allows the sink, appliances and storage to all be placed in a way that makes the kitchen both easy and a pleasure to use.

mmm 71

WHAT PEOPLE LOOK FOR IN A KITCHEN To create a practical and large kitchen, it’s important to zone your spaces well. Family and guests tend to congregate to islands, so locating the hob and prep sink to the island will create a kitchen that is friendly to guests. Refrigeration and ovens are important to have close by to whoever is cooking or prepping at the island, but remember that sometimes there may be more than one user in the kitchen at a time - for this reason two sinks are beneficial. People want an efficient work space, always wanting storage, and, even if they don’t immediately realize it, they want some basic parameters to separate the wine-drinking guests from the action in the kitchen.

STORAGE SOLUTIONS

Retrofit your kitchen; helpful products can be installed into your existing kitchen, without having to start from scratch. Make life easier on yourself. If you have a smaller kitchen then think about adding shelves or rails to create space. A limited number of kitchen cupboards don’t have to mean limited storage space. Putting up open shelves can not only help you utilise empty wall space, it can become a design feature too. Store your food in pretty jars, add a few baskets, or put your favourite crockery on display. Adding ornaments, picture frames or plants will make your kitchen feel more homely. Looking for something at the back of a cabinet is not a fun task. Organise your jars, bottles and containers with pull out storage, which allows you to see everything at a glance. For the tricky corner units, install a shelving unit or carousel, depending on your preferences and the shape of the base unit. a

APPROACHING KITCHEN DESIGN

Kitchens are really the soul of the house. there not just for cooking but also for congregating, so they need to be put in the context of the home’s public or adjacent spaces. In many older houses, the kitchen tends to be isolated and often small. Today, people want a kitchen that incorporates both a workspace and a casual space for dining or even working.

DESIRABLE LIGHTING ELEMENTS IN A KITCHEN

Lighting is important in any room of the house, but is especially so in the kitchen, which is often used for many different functions. Whether you want to set the mood for some intimate dining, illuminate the space for some work at the kitchen table or shine a bright light on food preparation areas, flexibility is key to your lighting options. This means working different lighting styles into the heart of your design. Lighting should be one of the first things you consider when planning your kitchen, because it may affect the style of kitchen units and worktops that you choose. Light is absorbed by textured, soft surfaces and reflected by harder, glossy ones. So if you want to make a room feel bigger you should choose materials that will reflect light around the room. Also, no matter how effective artificial light is, most people prefer the way natural light makes their home look and feel. You should therefore take a look at your windows and try to maximise the natural light by using reflective surfaces in the places where it rests, and adding more artificial lighting options to those areas in shade. So before you start ordering those cabinets and creating your bespoke worktop, remember to consider your kitchen’s lighting.a

ADVICE FOR SOMEONE DESIGNING A KITCHEN

There’s no ideal kitchen shape, whether it’s a galley, U or L-shaped. Plan for the sink, fridge and cooktop to form a triangle, with no more than six feet between each for ease of movement. There’s no such thing as too much counter space. Choose a surface that’s easy to work on and care for, but keep in mind that grout between tiles is hard to maintain and that stainless steel will scratch very easily. Avoid reusing appliances or items from your old kitchen where possible. It may seem as if you’re saving money, but an old appliance will stick out like a sore thumb unless it matches the new environment. The biggest

mistake people make at the planning stage is not allowing for enough storage. Use every nook and cranny. Put overhead cabinets right up to the ceiling, rather than leaving a gap on top that collects dust. Make your kitchen as safe and family-friendly as possible by planning for good visibility to the backyard and indoor play areas from the cooking area. Don’t forget to plan for garbage and recycling bins. Consider whether you want built-in bins cleverly disguised behind a cabinet door, or a sleek, stainless-steel garbage container that’s positioned out of the way.

Lara, Ream Kitchen Designer in Gillingham says “The versatility of Denim Drift is everywhere. In the kitchen, utilising deep rich blues on the base cabinets or central island offers a statement piece.” Lara adds, “Warm the grey-blue colours up with soft browns from rustic timber and natural earthy colours too. The calmer greys work well in dresser cabinets.”

Denim drift is a restful shade which is relaxing in our increasingly hectic, technology-dominated lives where there is no dividing line between work and personal life. Creating a modern twist using layers and depth can work well in areas of the home where dining, home working and the living area, work seamlessly at different levels. GARDENING Top 10 jobs this month NEW YEAR, NEW GARDEN. TOP TIPS TO SPRUCE UP YOUR GARDEN FOR 2017

RECYCLE YOUR CHRISTMAS TREE BY SHREDDING IT FOR MULCH

There are several types of conifer that can be brought indoors for decorating at Christmas. Most are available as cut trees, but container grown and containerised trees (dug up with roots and plunged into pots) are also available. Remember to ask your supplier where the trees come from, and to choose a locally sourced and grown tree, or one that has at least been grown in the UK rather than abroad. When displaying trees indoors, avoid placing them too close to a fire or radiator, as this will cause excessive moisture loss and needle drop. 

CLEAN POTS AND GREENHOUSES READY FOR SPRING

Cleaning greenhouses, gutters and water butts Set aside a good day for the task, ideally in dry, calm weather, then; 1. Remove plants – a sheltered area with fleece protection is a suitable area to hold plants while cleaning is carried out 2. Brush or vacuum to remove all debris for destruction or removal from the garden 3. Clean the structural parts with disinfectant or detergent (hot solutions are often best – consult manufacturers directions for use): Hydrogen peroxide based products, often sold for veterinary purposes, are especially benign to users and the environment; Garden disinfectants, such as Jeyes fluid, are satisfactory; Specialist greenhouse cleaners, such as Just Glasshouse Cleaner and Growing Success Concentrated Greenhouse Cleaner, are also available; Domestic cleaning products may be used 4. Glazing material should also be washed inside and out, but for plastic materials test on a small inconspicuous area first to be sure the cleaning material does not damage the glazing. Scrub off any old shade paint on the outside of the glass from the summer 5. Ease out dirt trapped between panes using a flexible scraper such as plastic plant label 6.Replace broken parts such as vent controllers and draught excluders. GARDENING SECTION

DIG OVER ANY VACANT PLOTS THAT HAVE NOT BEEN DUG ALREADY

Soil cultivation or digging may be hard work but, if taken slowly, it need not be back-breaking. In fact, here we describe how it can often be omitted or at least minimised. All bare soil is suitable for cultivating (or digging). However, digging around plants is best avoided as it damages roots and so can be harmful. Soil cultivation (or digging) is mainly carried out to bury weeds and debris. This is usually followed by surface preparation for sowing and planting. Cultivation improves soil structure by alleviating compaction, plus it offers the chance to apply fertiliser, manure and lime.

REPAIR AND RE-SHAPE LAWN EDGES

In mid-spring (often late March to April), use a proprietary spring or summer lawn fertiliser at the manufacturer’s recommended rates. Feeding the lawn will increase vigour and help prevent weeds and moss from establishing. Apply fertilisers when the soil is moist, or when rain is expected. If grass loses its vigour and freshness between late spring and late summer (often May to August), repeat the application of spring or summer lawn fertiliser or apply 15g per sq m (½oz per sq. yd) sulphate of ammonia mixed with four times its weight dry soil. Mixing with soil ensures even distribution and avoids scorching the grass. Apply this mixture in cool, moist conditions and lightly water it in. As an organic alternative, use chicken manure pellets. Repeat fertiliser application a third time if needed six to eight weeks later.

INSPECT STORED TUBERS OF DAHLIA, BEGONIA AND CANNA FOR ROTS OR DRYING OUT

Cannas, dahlias and pelargoniums (commonly known as geraniums) can be lifted and stored in a semi-dormant state over winter. Where lifting and storing are not necessary, then thick, dry mulch over the crown of non-woody plants may be all that is needed for winter protection.

PRUNE APPLE AND PEAR TREES

Before getting started, remember: Take your time and stay safe - if you need to go up a ladder, consider investing in a special fruit tripod ladder that will let you get nice and close to the branches (great for picking fruit too). A sharp pair of secateurs and quality pruning saw can make all the difference.

START FORCING RHUBARB

Rhubarb needs an open, sunny site with moist, but free-draining soil as it hates being waterlogged in winter. Avoid frost pockets as stems are susceptible to frost. It can be grown from seed, but it’s more common to plant dormant crowns between autumn and spring. Prepare the ground by digging in two bucketfuls per square metre/yard of well-rotted manure, then spread out the roots and plant so the tip of the crown is just visible above the soil.

PLAN YOUR VEGETABLE CROP ROTATIONS FOR THE COMING SEASON

The principle of crop rotation is to grow specific groups of vegetables on a different part of the vegetable plot each year. This helps to reduce a build-up of cropspecific pest and disease problems and it organises groups of crops according to their cultivation needs.

KEEP PUTTING OUT FOOD AND WATER FOR HUNGRY BIRDS By putting out additional food, gardeners can make a significant contribution to supporting wildlife over winter.

MAKE A POLYTHENE SHELTER FOR OUTDOOR PEACHES AND NECTARINES

Peach leaf curl is a fungal disease of peaches, almonds, nectarines and occasionally apricots, which causes severely distorted leaves, making them fall prematurely. GARDENING SECTION

FIVE YEARS ON & THE JOURNEY has only just begun PUBLISHER AND FOUNDER OF MMM, RASA DREGVA, TAKES A LOOK BACK AT THE CREATION AND EVOLUTION OF YOUR FAVOURITE COUNTY MAGAZINE

T

hey say the mightiest oaks grow from the smallest acorns – and that has never been truer of mmm. It must have been around six years ago that the seed was planted in my mind that there was a place in the Kent market for a quality magazine aimed at the Maidstone and Medway area. It was perhaps inevitable that the working title would be mmm – Maidstone and Medway Magazine – and it proved so catchy, it would become the brand you know so well today. Looking across the county's publications, there was a trend towards titles aimed at very localised markets. I spoke and got some great advice from Nick Moore who was behind the So Tunbridge Wells title. He agreed there was scope and gave the seal of approval for my business plan. It was the blessing of a publication already in the market that swelled confidence in my plans to go it alone. Having worked in local media for ten years, I was well aware of the needs

“” If you do it from the heart, it will work Michael Watson

and demands of businesses facing some of the toughest economic challenges in recent years, so my aim was simple – deliver a quality title and make it a publication that was perfect for businesses to get their message out to the widest possible audience. The first few issues were a blur of hitting deadlines, working out page designs and lay-outs. I had some wonderful friends and previous clients who supported me and helped get mmm off the ground. To them I will always be grateful. There was one memorable moment which has stayed with me ever since. I was attending an event at the Mercure Great Danes in Maidstone where the special guest was boxer Michael Watson. You may remember he had been involved in a WBO super-middle weight title fight with Chris Eubank in 1991. He suffered terrible brain injuries during the course of the bout and defied the odds to simply survive. His tale of recovery is truly inspirational. We sat together on a sofa at the hotel and I explained I had just launched mmm. He turned to me and, speaking in a slow voice, said simply, “Rasa, if you do it from the heart, it will work.” 

100 mmm

Continued from page 99

I must admit it is something which I often take strength from. It quickly became apparent that mmm's popularity was breaking out of its Medway and Maidstone heartland. We had advertisers coming to us from Swale to Ashford and they were only increasing in numbers. So mmm dropped its geographic limitations and became a truly countywide publication. It is something we did not expect but were keen to embrace. And as our circulation grew, so did our popularity.

Everywhere I went I took copies of our magazine. A regular visitor to Goodwood for its extraordinary Festival of Speed and other events, I would mingle with the great and the good, and the magazine always drew admiring glances – even from Lord March, the founder of the festival! I brushed shoulders with the likes of Strictly Come Dancing's Len Goodman, the Small Faces' Kenney Jones loved mmm, and flashed its pages at events such as the prestigious Salon Prive at Blenheim Palace and London.

mmm 101

mmm 103

I also had a fascinating chat with Anthony Russell, grandson of Lady Baillie, the last private owner of Leeds Castle. He was lyrical about his remarkable childhood, spending time with a castle as a playground. Admittedly there was a rather embarrassing incident when I was at the Village Hotel being introduced to a gentleman who asked my name. I introduced myself and then asked who he was. There were plenty of laughs from nearby when it was pointed out that this was the guest of honour at the event – the former Arsenal and Tottenham goalkeeper Pat Jennings – one of the legends of the game and a World Cup hero!

“” Everywhere I went I took copies of mmm

Creating mmm has been something of a rollercoaster ride over the years, but the highs have always outweighed the challenges and it remains something I am immensely proud of. I hope you would agree we have grown considerably over the last five years. And this is only the start of the journey. Feedback from you will help shape our future, so please never hesitate to get in touch. We always love hearing from you. And to all those we have interviewed, who have helped us, who have advertised with us, I owe an enormous debt of gratitude. So here's to the first five years – now raise a glass to the next five! mmm

TURBO-CHARGED Ferrari 488 FERRARI UNVEILS THE 488 CHALLENGE AT THE WORLD FINALS

T

he Ferrari World Finals event in Daytona this weekend saw the unveiling of the latest model to join the ranks of Ferrari’s prestigious international Challenge racing series for clients. The 488 Challenge is the sixth model to participate in the one-make series which, in 2017, celebrates its 25th Anniversary. Since the announcement of the racing series in 1992, there are now up to three series organised on three continents. Over the years, the Ferrari Challenge has proved to be an ideal platform for drivers looking to compete in international GT and prototype championships, and an impressive number have gone on to win in

Grand-Am, IMSA, the FIA World Endurance Championship and even the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The 488 Challenge is the first ever turbo-charged model to race and is the most powerful Challenge car ever, powered by the 670 cv 3.9-litre V8 derived from the series production engine that took the overall 2016 International Engine of the Year Award. Thanks to extensive development of the car’s engine, aerodynamics and chassis, the 488 Challenge reaches new levels of performance, chopping a second off the Fiorano lap time of the preceding 458 Challenge EVO for a new record of 1’15.5”. Compared to the production 488 GTB V8,a

the Challenge’s powertrain features specific engine mapping, optimised for racing performance, and shorter gear ratios. The variable torque management has been modified to prompt the driver to shift up at the ideal moment during longitudinal acceleration, thus making maximum use of the performance characteristics of the turbo engine. The F1 DCT transmission features a new racing shift strategy which enables the car to accelerate from a standstill to maximum revs in 4th gear in just six seconds. Further improvements include a reduction in overall powertrain weight. To enable Challenge drivers to tailor the car’s handling to their driving style to an even higher degree, the vehicle control functions (traction and braking) are now governed independently thanks to the adoption of three manettinos. One is dedicated just to braking, while the other two, set either side of the steering wheel, govern the traction control and electronic differential. These two manettinos regulate the two phases of traction control, meaning they work independently on when and how the intervention activation occurs. The right-hand manettino (TC1) governs ‘when’, in other words the point

These two manettinos regulate the two phases of traction control, meaning they work independently on when and how the intervention activation occurs. The right-hand manettino (TC1) governs ‘when’, in other words the point of intervention under acceleration. The left-hand one (TC2) instead governs ‘how’, controlling the degree of intensity of torque reduction as it senses the rear wheels spin.

of intervention under acceleration. The left-hand one (TC2) instead governs ‘how’, controlling the degree of intensity of torque reduction as it senses the rear wheels spin. In such a race-oriented application, the combined action of the two regulations provides a greater integration between the driver’s expectations and the vehicle’s response, especially when referred to the varying conditions met during racing. As a result the average acceleration out of a reference bend (Monza) is improved by 11.6%, thanks to the better torque delivery controlled by the evolved traction control and differential. The most noticeable changes to the 488 Challenge compared to the production car regard the aerodynamics. To achieve the technical objective of increasing the car’s aero efficiency while respecting the design, the engineers worked closely with the Ferrari Styling Centre. The front radiator layout was completely reworked, inverting the rake so that they are now inclined towards the rear. This solution improves the air flow over the radiators in racing conditions whilst, at the same time, reducing drag. The new layout required new vents at the bottom of the bumper ahead of the wheels.

lfa Romeo announces competitive CAP residual values for the eagerlyanticipated all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia. In the UK, CAP forecast over the course of three years and 60,000 miles, the all-new Giulia will hold a competitive residual value of up to 38.2%. When compared against the competition, the all-new Giulia performs strongly, with the Alfa Giulia 2.2 JTDm-2 180 Speciale securing better CAP residual value percentage (37% based on 3 years and 60,000 miles) than rivals BMW 3 Series 320d MSport and the Mercedes-Benz C Class c220d AMG Line. This strong residual value means the allnew Alfa Romeo Giulia will be available on Business Contract Hire with a starting rental of £269+VAT per month and a competitive profile of 6+23 months and 10,000 miles pa. The top-of-the-range Giulia Quadrifoglio, powered by a new 510hp, 600Nm Bi-Turbo V6 petrol engine, with an eight-speed paddle shift automatic transmission as standard, and featuring

sector first AlfaTM Chassis Domain Control (CDC) system, also received a competitive CAP residual value of 38.2% based on 3 years and 60,000 miles. Francis Bleasdale, Fleet and Business Sales Director, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles UK, said: ‘These figures reflect the confidence the industry places on the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia and we’re delighted to not only be competing but surpassing our competitors. With eye-catching Italian styling, efficient engine and driver technologies, a perfect 50/50 weight distribution and a Euro NCAP Five Star rating – the highest score ever achieved the new Alfa Romeo Giulia is a complete choice for business and retail customers.’ Andrew Mee, Senior Forecast Editor at CAP said: ‘“With the introduction of the new Giulia, Alfa Romeo has created an interesting and credible alternative to established models from premium brands. The marque’s sporty DNA flows through the vehicle, from the long bonnet, coupe like lines and muscular rear, to the rear wheel drive. The interior is driver focusedd,

with supportive seating, high quality materials and an uncluttered dashboard. The cap-hpi gold book forecasts reflect this fresh approach, attention to detail, and relatively low anticipated registration volumes, all of which should result in the Giulia being a desirable future used car.” The Giulia range includes comprehensive interior and exterior standard specification across the range, as well as new efficient active safety systems, including Forward Collision Warning with Autonomous Emergency Brake with pedestrian recognition, Integrated Brake System and Lane Departure Warning – all of which have contributed to the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia being awarded a prestigious Five Star Euro NCAP rating, with 98% protection result for adult occupants – making it the highest score ever achieved by a car, despite the more severe Euro NCAP evaluation system introduced in 2015. This announcement follows news that the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia has won the prestigious Car of the Year accolade at the Auto Europa 2017 awards. Surpassing the competition, the all-new Alfa Romeo Giulia was recognised for its technological excellence and distinctive Italian style. MOTORS SECTION

ASHFORD’S VISITOR ECONOMY SURGES Ashford’s visitor economy continues to thrive, with research commissioned by Visit Kent showing that Ashford saw a 6% increase in attraction spend in 2015. Visits to the district rose to 4.3 million trips, with 3.9 million day trips and nearly half a million overnight trips. The total number of jobs supported by tourism rose by 3.54% to 5,482. This equates to one in 10 of all jobs in Ashford. The total value of tourism across the borough, including all visitor spending, as well as associated and indirect spending was £278 million. The tourism picture was also rosy across the county in 2015, despite the challenges presented by Operation Stack and poor weather during the summer. Kent welcomed more than 60 million visitors in 2015, and the visitor economy’s value rose to £3.6 billion. Cllr Clair Bell, portfolio holder for borough presentation, said: “Ashford’s thriving visitor economy and the value of tourism in the borough cannot be underestimated. Ashford accounts for thousands of jobs and contributes significantly to Kent’s economy. The tourism action plan that was implemented following the tourism review, along with the prestigious National Tourism Symposium, hosted by Ashford and held at Eastwell Manor last year together with the launch of the wine trail in Tenterden, have all helped to raise the borough’s profile as a tourist destination. “We have achieved a great deal and these latest figures show we are moving in the right direction.” Cllr Gerry Clarkson, Leader of Ashford Borough Council, said: “In the coming years the town will have a new Chapel Down brewery, an expanded Designer Outlet Centre as well as a boutique cinema and hopefully the Model Railway Education Centre, which will all help to put Ashford on the map as an exciting and vibrant place to experience.” LOCAL NEWS

Family businesses are the backbone of the UK economy, and new research reveals the important role family businesses play in driving the overall growth and development of the UK economy - particularly in the South East. The annual UK Family Business Sector Report, compiled by Oxford Economics for the Institute for Family Business (IFB) Research Foundation, reveals family firms are continuing to cement their position as the bedrock of the UK economy, as the sector grows to 4.7 million businesses nationwide. Family businesses in the South East account for 86 per cent of all private sector firms in the region, including businesses such as WTA Group, Osborne, CPJ Field and Reed Recruitment. Additionally, there are almost 756,000 family run firms in the South East, making up over one in 10 of all family businesses across the UK. Speaking about the new report, Elizabeth Bagger Institute for Family Business Executive Director said: “This year’s report really reinforces the immense contribution family firms make to our economy and communities - especially here in the South East, which has a buoyant and thriving family business network. Family firms are here to stay and it is crucial that their value is recognised and championed.” LOCAL NEWS

CAITLIN’S COMMERCIAL OPPORTUNITY

A schoolgirl from Kent is fronting a unique TV campaign to raise awareness of Demelza Hospice Care for Children in the South East. Caitlin Goodsell, 11, from Kingswood, Maidstone, who is herself helped by the children’s charity, recites a poem which accompanies a 30-second commercial going out in the Meridian and London region promoting the work of Demelza. The commercial has been made possible thanks to Kent-based Swale Heating generously donating £26,000-worth of their own air-time to the charity, which provides vital care to seriously ill babies, children, young people and their families across Kent, South East London and East Sussex. The heating firm is currently advertising its own services around TV favourites such as Coronation Street, Jeremy Kyle and Judge Rinder and is allocating nine of those slots a month for Demelza to use across ITV and Channel 4. Sales Director, Matthew Edwards, says they are always looking for more ways to support such a worthwhile cause. “Demelza is an amazing charity that helps families cope with caring for a very sick child or one with complex needs and we support them by servicing their heating free of charge and displaying their logo on our vans. “We wanted to give them an opportunity to tell

Hopefully it will help them reach out to more families in need as well as encourage more people to donate to their fundraising.” In addition to promoting the vital work of the Demelza, the advert prompts viewers to text to donate as the charity is reliant on community generosity to be able to provide care to families in need. Demelza Chief Executive, Ryan Campbell, said: “This is the first time Demelza has advertised on television and we are enormously grateful to Swale Heating for giving us this exciting opportunity. “It will bring our work to the attention of a wide audience and hopefully show them what a vital service we provide to families of children with lifelimiting and life-threatening conditions.” training goals and footballs so I applied for the grant. I couldn’t believe it when we got it, it was such a surprise and we are all so thankful.” The Herne Bay Wanderers aims to develop players to play at the best possible standard, in all areas, and works closely with them to improve their individual and team work skills. The club has four teams ranging from Under 5s to Under 8s. Justin Straffon, who is also an engineer and coaches the Sturry Kings’ Football Club’s Under 7s team, said: “I helped to form the Under 7s team a few years ago, which my son Tylar now plays for. There are now two Under 7s teams and we have to train indoors during the winter months, which requires special indoor footballs, which we needed to buy. “The club received the Team Sport Award grant last year which was a massive help. This year it has gone towards the new footballs, allowing us to prepare for the start of the league, so we are very grateful.” Based just outside of Canterbury the Sturry Kings Football Club has teams for various age groups playing in the Kent F.A. Youth League, and the Faversham Friendly League. Jon Moreton, a field engineer in London, who has been a member of the Rebel Runners in Medway for two years, said previous grants from UK Power Networks had helped the club become more inclusive: “I’m a keen runner with the club and am on the committee and a ‘leader in running fitness’ (LIFR).”

he story of the museum began in April 1944 when a Spitfire Mark XVI bearing the serial number TB752 was rolled out of the Castle Bromwich factory and was allocated to No. 33 Maintenance Unit at RAF Lyneham. On February 21, 1945 the aircraft was flown to No. 66 Squadron based at Linton-onOuse and given the codes LZ-F. One month later the squadron moved to a forward base at Schijndel in Holland carrying out its first operational sortie on Monday March 19, 1945 with TB752

Sent to No. 409 Salvage and Repair Unit, TB752 underwent repairs as well as being upgraded with new guns and several other modifications before being issued to No. 403 (Wolf) Squadron of the Royal Canadian Air Force. Flying from the recently captured airfield of Diepholz in Germany, four enemy aircraft fell to her guns in just the space of twelve days. TB752 also laid claim

to being the last allied ‘combat’ aircraft to have shot down a German ‘combat’ aircraft, an action that was later portrayed in a superb painting by renowned aviation artist Michal Turner appropriately titled ‘Final Victory’. At the end of the war the Spitfire was based at various maintenance units until officially declared ‘non-effective’ stock on December 13th 1954. At around this time, film makers were seeking Spitfires to feature in films such as ‘Reach for the Sky’, the story of Douglas Bader. This bought a new lease of life for TB752 when it was requisitioned to appear in the film. At the end of several months filming in which she appeared in many flying and ground scenes, she returned to ‘non effective’ stock and was flown back to RAF Manston on September 28th 1955. TB752 now began a new life as a gate guardian at the airfield, a position that was to continue until 1978 when a Medway based aircraft restoration company were looking for an aircraft to refurbish. The Medway Aircraft Preservation Society ( MAPS) Ltd began as an aircraft preservation group at Rochester Airport within the newly reformed Medway branch of the Royal Aeronautical Society. Formed in 1977 by Lewis Deal MBE, the aim of the group at that time was to attempt to bring a flying boat back to Medway in the form of the Science Museum Short Sandringham. This did not happen and the group were actively looking for another aircraft when TB752 came to their notice. By this time, and having been exposed to the elements for many years, the aircraft was looking very sad. Lewis approached the MOD about allowing MAPS to restore her and with permission granted, TB752 arrived in the workshops of MAPS on July 7, 1978. It came with one proviso required by the MOD, that the aircraft had to be returned to Manston by Battle of Britain day September 15, 1979 which gave MAPS just over one year to complete a daunting task. a

There is such a thing as a ‘good’ funeral and celebration of someone’s life. Sadly, too few people experience it. We are passionate that people in the Kent area have this, which is why I started Albany Funerals - I wanted to make sure a safe space existed where a family’s wishes take priority at a very hard time. In the last 8 years, we have grown significantly as more and more families across Kent recommend how we work to others. Our recommendation in the Good Funeral Guide and recent awards are testament to the quality, integrity and compassion we bring to every family.

Thankfully today we aren't limited in our choices by having to use our nearest Funeral Director. At a time when it’s extremely hard to think clearly, our expertise is in helping you to understand all the options available to you, so that the funeral is the very best it can be.

LOCAL HISTORY

The preservation group was broken down into three teams, all of them volunteers, to handle the engine, fuselage and wings respectively. The summer weather helped to progress the restoration at top speed but come the autumn and winter it was a different story. The winter of 1978/9 was a bad one. Heavy frost followed by intense cold and then snow made work intolerable for the volunteers. With very little heating in the workshop and difficulty in blocking the draughts that came with an old building, work continued at a somewhat slower pace. As crisis replaced crisis the date of delivery back to Manston crept even closer. However, the Rochester Air Display in August 1979 saw TB752 rolled out of the workshop for the public to see what progress had been made. She became the star of the show, but there was still a long way to go. Back into the workshop she went for work to continue including spraying the aircraft in green primer. Once this was complete, the time had come to dismantle the aircraft ready for transporting back to Manston. Upon arrival the teams had to reassemble and paint her, and with just two weeks to go before September 15, plans were formulated for the official handover. With the work complete, TB752 looked resplendent in her original RAF paint scheme with No. 66 Squadron. On the day itself over 1,000 people attended and witnessed the rebirth of TB752. Standing proud as the gate guardian of RAF Manston and later flanked by a Canberra and a Javelin, just one thought was in the minds of the MAPS members. After over 8,000 man hours working on it at a cost of around ÂŁ4,000, TB752 could not once again be exposed to the elements. It had to be housed in a purpose built building. a LOCAL HISTORY

Consultations began which included the then CO of Manston, Wing Commander Colin Campbell, the MOD and members of MAPS. The then chairman of Thanet Council, Councillor John Jones and Wing Commander Campbell launched an appeal to house Kent’s only Spitfire. The donations began to come in and soon reached £5,000. Fund raising days took place and coach companies made sure the Spitfire was included in their local tours. Two legends from the Battle of Britain, Wing Commander Stanford Tuck and Group Captain Sir Douglas Bader gave visible support for the cause which by the autumn of 1980 stood at around £18,000. This was nowhere near the required £30,000 to £35,000 but with the setting up of a ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ with various individuals and companies to cover any shortfall, work began under the capable hands of a local building company, WW Martin (Thanet) Ltd. The building was finally completed in June 1981 when it became known as the ‘Spitfire Hall’. TB752 was out of the cold and was now on view to the public. It became known as ‘The Manston Spitfire’ and during the weeks after the formal opening, no less than 17 pilots who had flown the aircraft were traced and invited to see their ‘old mount’ fully restored. Along with the aircraft, many items associated with the Battle of Britain were also on display. The opening of a shop within the building saw books, pictures, CDs and DVDs and memorabilia for sale, all of which generated income for the maintenance of the building. Later a Hurricane aircraft was refurbished by MAPS and is now housed in an additional building making the duo a permanent memorial to all those brave airmen and women who died or suffered in any way as a result of the war.

LOCAL HISTORY

Councillor John Jones and Wing Commander Campbell launched an appeal to house Kent’s only Spitfire. The donations soon reached £5,000.

Since, however, the demise of Manston airfield visitor numbers have dropped dramatically, a fact that threatens the very survival of the Spitfire and Hurricane building together with the very fine cafe known as ‘The Merlin Cafe’. Whereas previously much of the income came from tourists who arrived on coaches as part of the Thanet Tourist Trail, without the flying aspect at Manston the appeal of visiting has sadly decreased. Though there is still a military presence in the form of the Defence Fire Training and Development Centre, the fact that it was once a major fighter airfield in the defence of the country and latterly a Master Diversion Airfield for the RAF seems to have faded from the public’s mind. So too has the museum, and many have the idea that the museum has now closed its doors but this is not so. It continues as a permanent memorial to all those who ensured that today we live in a world of relative security. With the addition of a memorial garden during the 1990’s, where people can sit and reflect on the sacrifices made by the services and especially the RAF, where else in Kent could you find such a fine tribute? The Spitfire and Hurricane Museum needs your help so if you do happen to be in Thanet at any time, pay them a visit. All year entry is free and you will find a wealth of history within its walls, plus, of course, a very warm welcome. mmm By ROBIN J BROOKS

Camera at Ramsgate Music Hall 15th January The beat hammers like the pulse of a pair of lovers on the run from a gang of thugs – the sound is manic, but from it speaks a seemingly insurmountable inner strength. This arch of tension is home to Camera. Hardly any other band understands how to mutate tiny musical nuances into volcanic eruptions like they do. Camera is a motor running at full throttle, where an explosion could occur at any second. Once you have embarked on this crazy journey, you will be fascinated by the alternating current somewhere between a flash flood and roller coaster running off the rails. The cascades of sound convey a blurry image of a boundless desire to revolt, with each blink of an eye threatening to end in purgatory, yet it is damned near indestructible. The Vanishing Man at Theatre Royal Margate 21st January Simon Evans and David Aula present ‘The Vanishing Man’. This is a show about magic, but it’s not a magic show. “I’ve been able to work out, deconstruct and rebuild every trick I’ve ever seen. Directors and performers Simon Evans (magical consultant to the NT, Old Vic and Donmar Warehouse, and two-time recipient of the Close Up Magician of the Year award) and David Aula (‘The Cement Garden’, ‘Personal Enemy’, and ‘MEAT’), team up to create a time-hopping, misdirectionabusing, mind-bending examination of what really happens when a man, in full sight of his audience, simply ceases to be. Each of the category winners were presented with a unique glass trophy sculpted by Annie Ross and mounted on a base of Kentish Ragstone from nearby Hermitage Quarry, provided by Gallagher Group. These trophies were sponsored by Quinn Estates. Andrew Metcalf of Maxim, who was master of ceremonies for the evening, said: “Some very interesting projects have been highlighted by this year’s awards and all the finalists should be proud of the contribution they have made to the Kent landscape.”
