hen Dame Maggie Smith made her stage debut, the nation was still coming to terms with the end of the Second World War. In 1952, she was a mere teenager, taking her first tentative steps into a theatrical career which would continue to rise over the coming decades. Remarkably it is now, at the tender age of 81, where she has arguably the highest profile of her career. Refusing to let the passing years slow her down, she has appeared in a host of recent movies – including The Lady in The Van. The tale, of a woman who parks at the end of playwright Alan Bennett’s London driveway in her van and decides to live there, saw her making a trip to Thanet. Almost a year before its release she braved the chilly air to shoot scenes for the film in a number of locations in Broadstairs. All rather at the opposite of the spectrum for reprising her role of Muriel Donnelly for the Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel – where much of the filming took place in sun-soaked India. a CELEBRITY FEATURE

Yet it is her role as two strong women in recent years which have catapulted her back to the A-list. First, her casting as Professor McGonagall saw her play a key role in all seven Harry Potter films – portraying the Hogwarts staff member. Adored by millions, it introduced the veteran actress to a new generation of cinemagoers. And then, just before the Harry Potter films took a bow on the big screen, she took on what is surely the most memorable role in the enormously successful Downton Abbey. As the Dowager Countess of CELEBRITY FEATURE

Grantham, it was she who injected a biting wit into proceedings, which generated the finest comedy moments and was, arguably, the only cast member who managed to steal every single scene she ever appeared in. From 2010 until last Christmas, she appeared in every series of the global success story. So was she pleased to see the back of the character? “‘It was right to stop,” she says, “It was one of those odd things – nobody knew it was going to go careering on as long as it did, and it was jolly exhausting. “But I did much less in the last few months, so I sort of faded rather nicely.”

When I started out I didn’t have any ﬁlm or television roles in mind. Not a scrap of it. I just thought it was going to be all theatre and wonderful

“ Not that you get the impression Downton was one of the most treasured of the many she has portrayed over the years. “I haven’t actually seen it,” she admits, “I don’t sit down and watch it. They’ve sent me the box set, but I haven’t viewed it. “I may watch it one day, but I know if I do I will just agonise over my performance. It’s frustrating as I always see things I would like to do differently.” It may well be that fiercely critical eye and desire to do better, that many see as so glorious which has seen her enjoy such remarkable success over the years. Her trophy cabinet boasts two Academy Awards, five Baftas and three Golden Globes and Emmys. Yet she has little time for the celebrity and fame which has come with all the success. “I have absolutely no time for it,” she admits. “I don’t feel any different to the way I felt before and I’m not quite sure what being a star or celebrity means. I am familiar to people now, which is what I was not before. “That is entirely due to the television set.” Her career has, in truth, rarely seen her out of the spotlight from that time as a 17-year-old a

when, as part of the Oxford University Dramatic Society, she took to the stage of the Oxford Playhouse as Viola in a production of Twelfth Night. Two years later she had a small role in a TV series – and two years after that she got her first minor film role. By 1958 she received the first of her 18 Bafta nominations for her role in the film Nowhere To Go. She performed opposite the likes of Laurence Olivier, Kenneth Williams. John Gielgud and Dirk Bogarde. She won an Oscar for her role in 1969 film The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie and, in 1978, for best supporting actress in California Suite. But it was the theatre she initially intended to start on her career path and stay on. She explains: “When I started out I didn’t have any film or television roles in mind. Not a scrap of it. I just thought it was going to be all theatre and wonderful.a

“Wherever I got the idea that working in film or television would not be so stressful as the theatre I do not know. The theatre might not be exactly a holiday, but it’s certainly not as exhausting as film can be. It’s an incredibly tough life.” Next to that reputation of being a hard worker there is also a perception that she is somewhat fierce. “I often hear that people have found me terrifying to work with. And, at times, I have been like that. “I’m sort of aware when I’m being difficult but it’s normally as a result of being scared. “Old people are scary and I have to face it, I am old and I am scary and I am very sorry about it but I don’t know what you do.” Married twice – first to the legendary theatre actor Sir Robert Stephens in a sevenyear marriage which ended in divorce in 1974, which saw the birth of two sons – she then enjoyed a 23-year marriage to the playwright and screenwriter Beverley Cross. He died in 1998 aged 66. Her sons are both actors. Toby Stephens, 46, is best known for his role as chief baddie in the James Bond film Die Another Day, and Chris Larkin, 48, who has appeared in a host of TV and films as well as enjoying a long and successful stage career. He changed his name in a bid to distance himself professionally from his famous parents. “God knows, they weren’t encouraged,” their mother says of their decision to follow her into the industry. “I think they sort of fought it, but I’m glad they gave in because even with all its horrors this profession is fascinating.” And the public remain utterly fascinated by her. Now 81, she has five grandchildren, battled breast cancer, and lived alone since the death of second husband. In 1990 she was made a dame. Her legacy will be great – her inﬂuence on generations of actors – and more to come - perhaps greater. mmm

Clothing is a good choice, but make sure you get the right size. Jewellery is another idea, but consider her tastes and your finances before committing to an expensive purchase. You could purchase a new bicycle and encourage her to ride it, or the latest book by a favourite author — all the better if it’s signed. If you live in a different location, something unique and exciting from your town might be a good way to put your lasting personal stamp on it.

TIPS FOR better cycling WHETHER YOU’RE YOUNG OR OLD, CYCLING IS AN ENJOYABLE AND HEALTHY WAY TO EXPERIENCE THE OUTDOORS

he development of new types of bicycles— notably the hybrid, which combines the speed of a road bike and the ruggedness of a mountain bike—has made riding easier and offers more options to suit your specific needs. What’s more, cyclists now have more places to ride. Here are ways to improve your performance, safety and comfort when cycling.

Wear a helmet Used properly, bike helmets are nearly 90 percent effective in preventing brain injuries. Choose a helmet that meets the European safety regulations. Select a bright colour and a helmet that fits snugly.

Make sure it fits you Buying a new bike? To find the right frame size for your body, straddle the bike and stand flat-footed. On a road bike, there should be one to two inches of clearance between your groin and the top tube. On a mountain bike, the clearance should be at least two inches.Your handlebars should be one inch lower than your seat top. Buy your bicycle from a reputable dealer who will help you find the right bike and fit. HEALTH AND FITNESS

Start slowly If you are out of shape, it’s best to start slowly. Pedal just 30 minutes or so a day on flat terrain for the first three or four weeks. Gradually, you can increase the intensity of your riding and your choice of terrain, adding hills for a better workout. Also, share the fun with others. Riding in a group can make the miles go by faster and motivate you to become a better cyclist.

Dress for comfort If you cycle a lot, consider wearing a pair of sleek cycling shorts. They have less fabric to wrinkle or bunch up, so there’s less chance of skin irritation. For extra protection, choose cycling shorts with special lining or padding. If you use clipless pedals, you’ll need to wear special cycling shoes with a cleat fitted to the sole; they lock into a mechanism in the pedals, holding the shoes in place. These can be a little hard to get used to, but help you pedal more powerfully and efficiently.

Go bright when in low light Avoid riding at night. If you expect to cycle in low-light conditions, wear brightly coloured, reflective clothing, and put reflective tape on your helmet and bike. Also, install a strong headlight and a strobe-type, blinking red tail light. You can attach the strobe light to your bike or your belt to make it easier for others to see you at night or when the light is low.

Use good road sense Ride with traffic, give right of way to cars and pedestrians, use hand signals and obey all signs. Communicate with drivers. That means using hand signals when you turn, staying out of drivers’ blind spots and making eye contact with drivers as it is necessary to insure that they’ve seen you. Don’t ride side by side with another cyclist. Keep an eye out for car doors swinging open, potholes and other potential hazards.

Do your best braking To exert optimal pressure, brake with your hands at the ends of the levers. For a quick stop, press your bicycle’s brakes firmly and slide your buttocks to the very back of the saddle. This will keep the rear of the bike down so that you don’t flip over the handlebars. When you are on long downhills and in wet weather, try to “feather brake” by tapping the brakes and applying intermittent pressure. In general, don’t squeeze your brakes too hard, and don’t squeeze the front brake first. Instead, apply firm pulses to both brakes. HEALTH AND FITNESS

Get in gear Don’t pedal in high gear for long periods; this can increase pressure on your knees. Shift to lower gears and faster revolutions to get more exercise with less stress on your knees. The best cadence for most cyclists is 60 to 80 revolutions per minute (rpm), though bicycle racers pedal in the range of 80 to 100 rpm.

Be traffic-savvy If you’re cycling in heavy traffic, on a narrow road or on winding downhill roads, ride in the lane with the cars, not to the side, where you’re not as visible and may get pushed off to the side. Of course, if a car wants to pass, move out of the way. Whether you think you’ll be riding in heavy traffic or light, it’s wise to attach a bicycle rear-view mirror to your handlebar, helmet or eyeglasses.

Help your muscles After a long uphill on your bicyle, don’t coast downhill without pedalling. Here’s why: As you climb up the hill, lactic acid builds up in your muscles and can contribute to muscle soreness. By pedalling lightly but constantly while you are coasting downhill—even if there’s little resistance—you can help remove the lactic acid.

Change positions Vary your hand and body position frequently. That changes the angle of your back, neck and arms, so that different muscles are stressed and pressure is put on different nerves. Avoid riding with your hands on the curved part of the handlebars for a long time. This may cramp your hands, shoulders and neck. Keep your arms relaxed and don’t lock your elbows. This will help you absorb bumps better.

THE ALETSCH GLACIER hike of a lifetime

JAMES WILSON OF SWITZERLAND TRAVEL CENTRE REPORTS FOR BALDWINS TRAVEL GROUP ON HIS GLACIER ADVENTURE’ love Switzerland, and I love rail travel in Switzerland and am very lucky to have enjoyed the vast array of scenic rail journeys and mountain excursions countless times as part of my role at STC. However, it was time for something different, something a bit more adventurous, and something that would take me out of my comfort zone. I passed through Zurich Airport as normal and jumped on the train to Bern. Changing at Bern I then started the journey to the Bernese Oberland and up to Wengen, where my adventure was to start for real. After dinner, an early night in preparation for what lay ahead. The following morning I caught the train from Wengen up to Kleine Scheidegg, overlooked by the imposing north face of the Eiger which never ceases to amaze me. Onwards and upwards to the Jungfraujoch where I would meet my guide and the rest of my group. Between the eight of us, only three had met one another before. And then the adventure starts, and our first view of what lay ahead. Safety demonstrations, harnesses, hooks, clips, ropes and crampons, and 22km of rock and ice – the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in Europe and our home for the next two days. It’s impossible for me to put into words what this felt like. I had never worn a safety harness, never worn crampons, and certainly never been attached by a rope to seven complete strangers before. And as it turned out, none of us had ever done anything like this before either, only our guide, Martin. To say Martin knew the glacier would be a massive understatement. He knew it like the back of his hand, which in itself is an amazing feat, not least because the glacier itself is constantly moving. Not only did Martin know which way to go, it was as if he had eyes in the back of his head, somehow a

sensing how each of the rest of us was getting on behind him. One after the other, a deep breath followed by a leap over the next crevasse. A wrong move and the rest of us would have to do our job; hold firm and let the rope do what it’s there for. But Martin always made sure that didn’t happen. As we approached the halfway stage and our beds for the night, something hit us and hit us hard. Not that long ago, the Konkordiahütte was reached from the edge of the glacier by a 50m staircase, bolted to the edge of the cliff. A head for heights to climb it was a must back then, but the same staircase is having extra steps added onto it every year, as the glacier melts further and further away from the hut. Martin pointed out where the staircase used to start from and that was when the reality of the melting of these mighty glaciers became apparent. We fell silent as the reality of the situation dawned on us. How much longer will the glaciers last? A sobering thought. Our overnight stop wasn’t your average Swiss hotel, although the hospitality was up there with the best of them. The day’s weather hadn’t been kind and we were all damp to say the least. That was soon to be forgotten however, as once we had hung our clothes up to dry, we were treated to typical Swiss Alpine Club-hut hospitality. Hot, plentiful food, hot drinks, and something a little stronger to put us to sleep. As the eight of us drifted off in our dormitory, the weather finally started to improve. Sunrise over the glacier was unbelievable and there was not a sound to be heard. After breakfast at 05:30, we embarked on the day’s trek to our finishing point – Fiescheralp in the Aletsch Arena. The weather allowed Martin to point out various TRAVEL FEATURE

peaks in the distance, with some of the famous 4000m peaks amongst them – Matterhorn, Weisshorn and others. It also allowed us to fully appreciate the expanse of the glacier. It may well be melting and retreating rapidly but its sheer scale is almost impossible to comprehend. It seems to go on for miles and miles and miles in every direction. Looking at the glacier from various vantage points, the moraine looks like a line of small rocks and the surface of the glacier can look smooth and serene. Up close however, the crevasses are like canyons, the meltwater streams are like raging rivers, and the rocks are actually boulders the size of pick-up trucks. It is an amazing place. As we reached the point where we left the glacier for good, and started the climb towards civilisation, every single one of us fell silent once again and turned back to look towards Jungfraujoch where our adventure had begun only the day before. It felt like a lifetime ago, simply because we had achieved so much in such a short space of time. Martin told us one last tale and we raised a glass and toasted the mighty Aletsch Glacier hoping that it will still be there for us for a long, long time to come. The ultimate chocolate brownie

• Place the butter in a Pyrex bowl and melt in the microwave. • Whisk the sugar and eggs into the melted butter and then stir in the vanilla essence. • Sieve the dry ingredients onto a plate and then beat into the egg mixture with a wooden spoon until just blended. Do not over beat or the mixture will become stringy, like a batter. • Grease a large Swiss roll tin and line with parchment paper. Pour in the brownie mixture and smooth the surface with a knife. • Bake in a preheated oven, 160ºC, for about 25 minutes until the edges are crispy and a skewer or cocktail stick comes out clean when inserted into the middle. • Cut into 15 squares and serve warm as a dessert with cream and fresh fruit, or leave to cool. • The brownies will keep in the fridge for up to a week, so it’s worth making double quantities.

Ragu with fresh Tajarin pasta Ingredients 1 pound of beef 1 pound of pork 2 tablespoons olive oil 1/3 cup finely chopped onion 1/3 cup finely chopped carrot 1/3 cup finely chopped celery 2 cloves garlic, grated 6 tablespoons tomato paste, divided (a 6 ounce can) 1 cup dry red wine, divided 2 1/2 cups beef broth, divided 2 cups crushed or puréed tomatoes, divided 1 teaspoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon ground nutmeg 1/2 teaspoon ground pepper Sea salt to taste Freshly grated Parmigiano Reggiano cheese

For the pasta: 8 egg yolks, room temperature 1 1/2 - 2 cups all-purpose flour

Method • In a large heavy pot, brown the meats over medium heat. Drain the meats in a colander to remove fat. Do not wipe out pot. Add the onion, carrot, celery and olive oil to pot and sauté on medium low heat for about five minutes. Add the garlic and sauté a minute more. Add three tablespoons of the tomato paste and let cook for a couple of minutes and then blend well. Add 1/2 cup of the wine, two cups of the beef broth, one cup of the puréed tomatoes, the oregano, nutmeg and pepper. Return the meat to the pot, stir well and cook uncovered, over low heat so that the ragu simmers, but does not boil. • Place the egg yolks in a medium mixing bowl and whisk. If you have an electric mixer with a dough hook, do this step in that mixing bowl. Add half of the flour and, either with the dough hook or a fork, mix the flour into the eggs. Keep adding more flour until you get a dough that is still a bit sticky. Turn out onto a counter and finish by hand, adding a little more flour at a time and kneading until the dough is not too dry but still a tiny bit moist - it should feel like “Play-Doh”. Wrap in floured plastic wrap and allow to sit for about 20 minutes. After the dough has rested, cut it into four pieces and run through the rollers of a pasta machine, starting at the widest setting and ending at the next to thinnest setting. Lay the sheets out on a slightly floured counter. After you make all the sheets, either roll them up and slice by hand or run the sheets through the spaghetti cutter on your pasta machine.

Place the pasta on a well floured rimmed baking sheet, toss with flour so the pasta doesn’t stick, lightly cover with plastic wrap and keep in the fridge until ready to use. •After the ragu has cooked for about 1 1/2 hours, most of the liquid should be gone. If not, simmer for 20 or so minutes more until this stage is reached. Either with an immersion blender in the pot, or in a food processor, process the ragu until the meats are finely ground. Return to pot and add the rest of the wine, beef broth, puréed tomato and tomato paste. The ragu should soak these right up. Taste the ragu and add salt to taste. Stir well and keep warm, with the lid on this time, until ready to use. Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Cook the pasta for about 60 seconds, tossing with tongs as it cooks. Remove the pasta with tongs and place right into a large serving bowl, allowing some of the pasta water to cling to the pasta. Spoon some of the ragu over the pasta and toss well, coating the pasta.

Method • Preheat the oven to 200ºC, gas mark six. Lightly butter a small ovenproof dish and place the cod fillets inside. Mix together the pesto and tomatoes and spoon on top of the fillets. Bake for 15 minutes until cooked through. • Meanwhile, cook the potatoes in a large pan of boiling water for 13 to 15 minutes. Add the peas and cook for a further two minutes until the potatoes are tender. Drain well and return to the pan.

• Add a little butter to the pan and lightly crush the potatoes and peas using a masher. Stir in the lemon zest and juice, and season to taste. • Divide the potato mixture between four plates and top with the cod and tomato-pesto mixture, spooning over any baking juices.

Do you have children that need space to play, do you plan on hosting a lot of parties, and does your living room have a large window with a great view? The function of the room should be the main influence on how you design it. If your living room has a natural focal point, such as a fireplace or a view, consider designing around it. Face the seating towards the focal point so that everyone in the room has a clear view. Add rotating armchairs so you can easily adapt the room to a space for entertaining. Some living rooms are large enough to split into two or more areas. If you have a large living room, and you need a space for children to play, consider devoting a part of the room to a play area. Keep the entryways clear. Avoid putting furniture too close to an entrance. Guests entering the room should always have plenty of clearance. Keep plants and other room accents away from the entryways as well. You don’t want your guests to have to fight past anything when coming into the room. Lighting the room Create layers of light. Don’t rely on a single source of light to brighten your living room. Try to blend several layers of light from multiple sources. Use a combination of ceiling lights, table lamps, sconces, and floor lamps to achieve balanced lighting in your living room. Pay attention to the corners. If you have a lamp in one corner, position two more in the room to try and balance the light. Use tall lights to give the impression of a higher ceiling. Install dimmer switches. Adding accents and decor Hang a mirror to open up a room. If you want to increase the visual space of your living room, consider adding one. This works especially well for smaller living rooms. Improved driving dynamics, comfort and safety The fun-to-drive qualities which were a major attraction for buyers of the fourth-generation Sportage have been honed to an even sharper degree in the new model through a combination of a much stiffer body shell, extensive suspension revisions and a new steering system. As a result, the Sportage is now even more precise and stable on the UK’s twisty country roads and more comfortable and refined on highways and motorways. In the UK, all versions have Kia’s latest rack-mounted Motor Driven Power Steering (R-MDPS). Previously, the electric motor which controls the steering was mounted half way up the steering column. With R-MDPS it is mounted directly to the steering rack. This brings sharper responses and greater precision. Kia likens it to trying to steer a blindfolded person from behind: if you direct them from the waist they are able to follow a more precise path than if directed at shoulder level. There is also Blind Spot Detection to act as an extra pair of eyes for the driver when changing lanes, and Rear Cross Traffic Alert to warn a driver who is about to reverse out of a perpendicular parking bay that there is a vehicle approaching at right angles. All models from grade 2/KX-2 have Lane Keep Assist to alert a tired driver who may be about to stray into the path of a vehicle approaching from behind; High Beam Assist to switch between full and dipped beam automatically when there are other vehicles in the vicinity; and a Speed Limit Information function within the instrument cluster. As a result, the new Sportage has earned a five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP under the ever-tougher testing regime. It was commended for its ability to protect passengers of all statures in all seats, faring especially well in a side-on impact with a pole, and scored 71 per cent for its active safety assist technologies.

A dynamic and sporty appearance With the introduction of GT-Line versions of the Sportage, there are now two distinct body treatments for Kia’s compact crossover. All have an almost a sports car-like ratio between sheet metal and glass, with narrow side windows, deeply sculpted sides and bold wheel arches encasing wheels of up to 19 inches in diameter. Sleek and rakish, the Sportage successfully incorporates the key features of an SUV in an urban-friendly, athletic and muscular package. The new Sportage is 40mm longer than its predecessor, with a 30mm greater wheelbase but unchanged width and height – dimensions which make it look even more lithe and sporty while lowering its co-efficient of drag (Cd) from 0.35 to 0.33. Every small reduction in drag helps to lower fuel consumption and emissions at speed. The front is dominated by a wide interpretation of Kia’s ‘tiger nose’ main grille featuring a chromed surround with either black diamond or high-gloss black diamond mesh. The dynamically styled bonnet is dished in the centre and features two raised ribs. At the sides, the bonnet sweeps up to cover the elongated headlamps which extend along the sides. LED daytime running lamps are standard, and the headlamps are bi-xenon adaptive units on grades 4/KX-4 and First Edition. There are recessed circular foglamps, which are underscored by two chrome blades. The steeply angled windscreen sweeps seamlessly into the low roofline and its top edge is again castellated, which is becoming something of a Sportage hallmark. MOTORS FEATURE

Internal affairs The new Sportage continues the leap forward Kia has been making with actual and perceived quality, with flush-fitting fixtures and trim, soft-to-the-touch materials and luxurious detailing. The dash is horizontal in layout and split into an upper display area containing the Thin Film Transistor instrument graphics and 7- or 8-inch colour touch-screen where fitted. The lower section of the dash is the control area, with large, softpainted buttons for the heater switches and the audio system. The touch-screen system which is standard from grade 2 upwards means the interior designers have been able to reduce the number of switches. The front of the cabin is driver-centric, with a pronounced cockpit layout and simple switches grouped according to function. This is not only more ergonomic but also safer because it reduces the amount of time the driverâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s gaze needs to be averted from the road. The centre console is angled at 7.2 degrees towards the driver for easier visibility. Visibility has been further improved by lowering the position of the door mirrors, narrowing their plastic mounts and reducing the thickness of the bottom of the A-pillars. The tailgate glass is also

taller and the C-pillars are narrower to expand the rearwards field of vision. The floor has been lowered by 40mm, making entry and access easier and lowering the hip point of occupants. A new organtype boxed accelerator pedal replaces the previous pendant type for greater comfort. Seat comfort has also been improved by studious attention to detail with the padding and side support. The pad density of the cushions has been increased, their suspension at the front edge is now fixed, the foam is softer and the spring diameters have been reduced. There are also firmer side supports, which are replicated with the rear backrest bolsters. And a softer pad is fitted to the headrests. High- and low-tensile steel frames reduce the weight of each front seat by 2.5kg and are more effective at absorbing vibrations. The five-seat cabin is more spacious thanks to the increase in wheelbase. Legroom and headroom front and rear is up to 16mm greater, while the boot capacity has risen by 26 litres (all seats in use) at 491 litres, or 1,480 litres when they are folded down. The rear seats now fold almost flat, with a barely noticeable eight-degree tilt, while the lift-over height of the boot lip has been lowered by 47mm. The two-position cargo floor leaves space for the luggage cover to be stored beneath it when not in use.

TREE OF HOPE APPOINTS NEW CHIEF EXECUTIVE Gill Gibb has been appointed chief executive of Tree of Hope, the Kent-based charity which offers help to the families of sick and disabled children in the UK who need specialist medical surgery, treatment, therapy and equipment. Her appointment comes as the Tunbridge Wellsbased charity continues to strengthen its team to offer greater support to many hundreds of sick and disabled children and their families. Tree of Hope supports fundraising to help pay for specialist medical treatment, therapy and equipment which is not ordinarily available. This includes funding treatment by medical specialists abroad, where the specific knowledge and facilities are available, in order to treat children as quickly as possible. Gill said: “This is a terrific opportunity to take the helm at one of the most inspiring and respected national children’s charities. I’m thrilled to have joined such a dedicated and hard working team and have been deeply impressed by their passion for helping poorly youngsters. “Tree of Hope is an amazing charity that helps to transform the lives of children throughout the UK and Northern Ireland. SERVICE TO MAKE IT EASIER TO APPLY FOR BANKRUPTCY From April, debtors will be able to petition for their own bankruptcy by completing an online form instead of having to go through the courts. It’s the latest in a raft of changes to the insolvency landscape being introduced by the Government and is designed to make bankruptcy easier and more straightforward – but the new service could prompt some to make rash decisions without thinking about the potentially serious consequences, warns leading south east law firm Furley Page. The new online portal will be run and operated by the Insolvency Service and, once an application has been made, it will be considered by the newly created office of the adjudicator under powers allowed by the Enterprise and Regulatory Reform Act 2013. “The intention is to make the process less stressful for individuals as they won’t need to attend court,” says insolvency specialist Richard Ludlow, an Associate and Head of Insolvency at Furley Page. “But my concern is that it will allow individuals to make applications on the spur of the moment without giving any real thought to how their actions will affect them and their families. “For some, bankruptcy is a terrifying option; others see it as the perfect solution to their money worries and a way of starting again financially. While it may write off most of your debts, so your creditors can no longer ask you to pay them, it can also have serious implications in all areas of your life and really should be the last resort,” says Richard. “Bankruptcy is a legal procedure and can affect you in several ways, from your bank account and work to your home and even your credit rating,” he adds. “It could have an adverse effect on your business and your pension and there are also implications for your confidentiality, as your bankruptcy will be published on the public register.” So are there alternatives to bankruptcy? “Yes,” says Richard, “which is why it’s vital that you seek proper legal advice before even contemplating bankruptcy. “Your personal circumstances and financial situation will all have a bearing on your decision and there are various options that can be explored. These include entering into an Individual Voluntary Arrangement (IVA) or possibly refinancing. “With the right legal approach, the issues affecting your personal finances can be resolved so that you can move forward and get on with your life.” The full extent of safeguards and processes that will be put into place to govern the new online bankruptcy service are yet to be determined, adds Richard. “But we anticipate that, initially at least, it will lead to an increase in the number of bankruptcy applications.” LOCAL NEWS

n 1925 the Supermarine Aviation Company had designed and built the S.5 monoplane ﬂoatplane. Capable of a speed of 226mph, it gained the World Speed Record for ﬂoatplanes the same year. Two years later a new S.5 won the coveted Schneider Trophy when it obtained a speed of 281mph. Later races won by the aircraft reached speeds of 407mph and ensured that the trophy remained in Britain signifying that British built aircraft were the best in the world. This success bought Supermarine to the forefront of aviation. Away from winning air races much of the work done by the company was concerned with the construction and maintenance of Southampton Flying Boats but with a company take-over by

Vickers (Aviation) in 1928, the new thinking was that the company should not concentrate on floatplanes but on fighters. By coincidence, in 1931 the Air Ministry issued Specification F.7/30 for a fighter to replace the ageing biplanes that were currently equipping the Royal Air Force. The Supermarine design team entered a drawing based on the S.5 racing planes calling it the ‘Type 224’. It was a low wing monoplane to be powered by a Rolls Royce Goshawk engine. The head of the design engineers was Reginald Joseph Mitchell. He joined the company direct from an apprenticeship and had worked his way up to reach this position, all the time wanting to design a land based plane as fast as the S.5. His opportunity came 

with the ‘Type 224’ the development of which featured the now well known ‘elliptical’ wing shape. (This was actually designed by a woman on the team, Barbara Shenstone). It was thinner than a conventional wing enabling the aircraft to reach higher speeds and better able to manoeuvre when dog-fighting. Flown on various occasions by the two Supermarine test pilots, Mutt Summers and Jeffrey Quill, the prototype underwent many months of testing including the replacement of the Goshawk engine for the Rolls Royce Merlin. By March 6th, 1936 the prototype was still just known as K5054. When the time came to actually name the aircraft, several suggestions were made with the favourite being Spitfire. When R J Mitchell heard this, it is reported that he said: that’s the sort of silly blo-----dy name they would give it’! Despite his reservations Spitfire it became and the rest is history. On June 3rd 1936 and even before the test flights of K5054 were completed, the Air Ministry placed an order for 310 examples of the fighter now known as the Spitfire. With this order the company realised HISTORY FEATURE

that it did not have the man power at Eastleigh to complete the order and so tenders went out to sub-contract part of the work. As production of the Mark 1 Spitfire got underway a new facility was opened at Castle Bromwich near Birmingham. This was the ancestral home of Morris Motors later to become the main manufacturing plant for the Spitfire. As the aircraft began to equip the fighter squadrons of No. 11 Group, Fighter Command, the group controlling the south eastern area of the UK, Biggin Hill became one of the main RAF bases to receive the new fighter. The outbreak of war in September 1939 saw the first Spitfires arrive when No. 610 (County of Chester) Auxiliary Squadron flew in from Prestwick in May 1940. By September 8th they had been replaced by 79 Squadron and by the end of the month Nos. 72 and 92 Squadrons, all with Spitfire Mark 1s. This pattern of rotating Spitfire squadrons was to continue for the rest of the war from Biggin Hill and the other Kent airfields such as Manston, Detling, Gravesend, Hawkinge and

Lympne. So many sights of the Spitfire in the skies above Kent hastened the start of a love affair between the Spitfire and the people. With the last squadron type leaving Biggin Hill in 1975, the sound of a Rolls Royce Merlin engine faded rapidly. That was until early 2000 when a local airline pilot acquired the remains of an ex RAF and SAAF Spitfire Mark 9 with the intention of restoring it to flying condition. This painstaking work took many years but in 2006 the Spitfire named ‘Spirit of Kent’ and now known as ‘the Kent Spitfire’ took to the air once again.

Today the sound of the Merlin engine is frequently heard in the skies above Kent. The restoration of this single Spitfire inspired the birth of an organisation known as ‘The Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar’, which is now resident on the ex RAF airfield and currently has five Spitfires and a Hurricane available for displays. Several other Spitfires are in various stages of restoration to flying by the Spitfire Company (Biggin Hill) Ltd. In addition the recent acquisition of a two seat aircraft gives the public the opportunity to fly in it. From a machine of war the Spitfire has turned full circle to become a purveyor of pleasure and with this the sight and sound of the Merlin engine Spitfire will be heard in the skies above Kent for many years to come.
