With the nights now drawing in, the explosion of light and sound can bring a little colour and excitement back to our days...just that it seems to last for weeks doesn’t it?

t’s a rare opportunity to get the chance to learn how to dance in the company of perhaps the two most famous ballroom performers in the country, but next year there’s an opening to do just that.

Because at the Mercure Maidstone Hotel, the glitz and glamour of Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag will waltz in for a very special evening.

Not only do those attending get to learn to dance with the stars in a 50 minute workshop, but they then can enjoy a fourcourse gala meal and watch the dance duo perform their breathtaking ballroom showcase up close and personal.

For Anton it will be a return to a county in which he was raised – having first discovered the delights of dancing at the age of 14 whilst born and bred in Sevenoaks.

The appearance will come hot on the heels of their spring 2017 nationwide Swing Time tour, which will be touring UK theatres from January through until April.

Featuring such classic tunes as I Could Have Danced All Night, I Got Rhythm, Guys and Dolls, Moondance and Strike Up The Band, the duo are already rehearsing in between Anton’s appearance on the current series of Strictly Come Dancing.

The top rated show, which culminates with a grand final at Christmas, has shown no signs of its popularity declining in what

is the final year with Dartford’s Len Goodman as head judge (a role, coincidentally, many believe may go to Anton next year).

Viewing figures are already up on last year, with more than 8.5 million viewers tuning in.

Anton, 50, who has appeared on all series of the show, was this year partnered with actress Lesley Joseph – best known for her long running role in comedy Birds of a Feather.

Erin, 41, who’s been in 10 series, sat out this year’s show.

And for Anton, the joy of being on the annual TV extravaganza remains as compelling as ever.

“I’ve been the luckiest of all the professional dancers,” he says, “by having the most interesting and lovely ladies to dance with over the years. a

On Strictly, we’re just making a television show – the person I’m dancing with can’t dance, they’re doing their best and we’re not going to win the world championships. At a professional level, I expect things to be great.

“If I hadn’t danced with Ann Widdecombe that would have been my loss because she was a joy – such a scream, and fun to be with.

“I wouldn’t have missed those wonderful moments, like throwing Judy Murray across the floor, and our routine with her as Cruella de Vil accompanied by two Dalmatian dogs.

“And, for heaven’s sake, Jerry Hall’s a living legend and also hilarious. I’ve enjoyed every second of it all.

“That’s my goal when I partner someone on Strictly, that they’ll have a nice time and enjoy it. If they do, of course, it helps them give a good performance, but for me, whatever their result, I want them to look back and say, ‘I had a great time’.”

And while Erin can focus her time on the upcoming tour – she and Anton have been selling out arenas for years – she admits she still has much to prove.

“As a performer you always want to prove - and improve – yourself; you need challenges. I spent many years competing worldwide before taking part in Strictly which had a competitive buzz all of its own.

“Every series brought the fresh challenge of training my celebrity dance partner to dance the best they possibly can.

“I’m always busy touring and teaching with appearances and presenting, even designing dance costumes - it’s a full time job all year round.”

Erin met Anton Du Beke in 1997 and the pair have danced together ever since. Born in New Zealand, she started dancing when she was just 3 years old. Like so many, she began with ballet before progressing into ballroom, Latin and jazz. a

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. A radiant and healthy skin reflects a healthy body. These basic tips will help you to retain your skin’s lustre.

Solution: Put aside all your rich foundations and switch to tinted moisturisers. Avoid powders or mineral based products. Always apply a lip balm before wearing a lipstick and remember ‘less is more.’

Christmas Grotto, Hempstead Valley Shopping Centre 19th November On Saturday 19th November, Father Christmas will take up residence in his traditional grotto, which will then be open every day until Christmas Eve. Children can look out for a magical toy shop and toy soldiers, among the many enchanting grotto characters.

For every child attending the opening of the grotto on Saturday 19th November, there will be an opportunity to receive a free chocolate treat. Entrance to the grotto to visit Father Christmas costs ÂŁ4.50 per

he newly discovered Kitty-inBoots story will be read out loud for the first time by Patricia Routledge, actor and official Beatrix Potter ambassador, to groups of lucky prize-winning school children on Wednesday 7th December as part of the ‘The Tale of Christmas at Leeds Castle’ which marks the 150th Anniversary of Beatrix Potter’s birth.

Leeds Castle is inviting Year Three primary school classes to take part in this special prize draw by entering on the Leeds Castle website to win an exciting festive trip on 7th December (closing date to enter was 21st October). The children will sit down to a fireside reading in the Castle Library with Ms Routledge and see the wonderful illustrations by Quentin Blake that accompany the story. MULLED Wine

N

othing fills a home with Christmas spirit like the aroma of mulled wine on the stove. Cinnamon, orange peel, allspice, cloves, pink peppercorns and ginger are some of our favourites. Similar to a warm Sangria, there are many ways that this can be prepared and rules don’t apply as strictly compared to other cocktails, so have some fun with it. You can use fresh fruits or dried, but a great way to share with friends is to make mulling spice gift packs. Then all they need to do is add some wine, sugar and brandy and they are off to the races.

Mulled Wine Ingredients

2/3 cup of honey or sugar 3 cinnamon sticks 8 to 10 cloves 2 tablespoons ground ginger (can be substituted with allspice) 1 orange, peeled and sliced (keep the peel to add zest for taste) 2 ounces of brandy (optional) Combine the ingredients (except the brandy) in a large pot over low to medium heat and warm carefully. Keep below a simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring frequently. Despite its Hungarian name, ‘forralt bor’ (boiled wine), it’s important not to boil the wine, as the boiling point of alcohol is lower than that of water so by the time it comes to a boil both its alcohol content and wonderful aroma will be gone. Finally stir in the brandy, serve hot and enjoy.

INGREDIENTS Victoria sponge 200g sugar 200g soft butter 4 eggs 200g self raising flour 1tsp baking powder 2 tbsp milk Italian meringue 225g caster sugar 100ml water 4 egg whites 1tbsp glucose DELICIOUS RECIPES

METHOD OF HOW TO COOK Victoria sponge • Beat all the ingredients together until you have a smooth batter.

• Then spread onto a tray so the mixture is about 1cm deep.

• Bake for 20 minutes until the top is golden brown and springs back when pressed.

• Leave to cool on a rack and then cut into discs.

• Sandwich raspberry Jam in between the layers.

Italian meringue • Beat the egg whites to stiff peaks.

• Heat water and sugar together to make a stock syrup. 121ºC.

• Carefully pour over the syrup on the egg whites, incorporate and leave to chill.

• Place the sponge sandwich in the centre of the plate.

• Place a scoop of ice cream on top.

• Pipe the meringue from the base to the top and the colour the meringue with a blow torch and serve.

INGREDIENTS 1 tbsp olive oil, plus extra for brushing 1 onion, chopped 2 cloves garlic, chopped 2 tsp ground cumin 250g pack Waitrose duchy organic cooked beetroot 400g can Waitrose duchy organic chickpeas, drained and rinsed 125g fresh white breadcrumbs 1 essential Waitrose free range egg, beaten 200g pot Waitrose tzatziki, and mixed salad, to serve DELICIOUS RECIPES

METHOD OF HOW TO COOK • Heat the oil in a large frying pan and cook the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened.

Stir in the cumin and cook for a further minute.

• Preheat the oven to 200ºC, gas mark 6. Pat the beetroot dry on kitchen paper and roughly chop.

Place in a food processor with the onion mixture, chickpeas, breadcrumbs and egg. Whizz together to make a firm paste.

• Using damp hands, roll the mixture into 20 evensized balls and place on a non-stick baking sheet Brush lightly with oil and bake for 20 to 25 minutes until crisp and heated through. Serve warm with tzatziki and mixed salad.

• These will keep for 2 days in the fridge, and are just as good eaten cold as leftovers.

• Please serve and enjoy.

THE HEXENTANZPLATZ

It is less than half the height of the Brocken, but this mountain plateau is equally mysterious. The name translates to ‘witches’ dance floor’ as it was believed to be the site of an Old Saxon cult. Even so, it is scenically beautiful and lies high above the Bode gorge. You can reach the top of the plateau via the gondola lift, which runs from the tiny village of Thale and offers panoramic views.

S

ometimes it feels as though the distribution of talent has been, well, just a little over generous to some people.

Take Emilia Fox. Since she first took to our television screens she has been a regular sight – renowned for her acting ability and her beauty.

She has starred in period dramas – Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth (her major TV debut in 1995) – she’s taken on the highly acclaimed lead role of Dr Nikki Alexander in BBC hit drama Silent Witness, comedy drama in the revival of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) with Kent’s very own Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, and she’s even taken to the wild with born survivor Bear Grylls in one of his celebrity-heavy reality TV survival shows.

What’s more she can speak fluent French and German. Oh, and she plays the cello, piano and even the trumpet.

And, now, at 42, she has comfortably taken her place among one of Britain’s most famous thespian acting families. She may even eclipse them.

Her father is Edward Fox, star of the classic Day of the Jackal, her mother actress Joanna David, vice president of the Theatrical Guild. Her uncle is the actor James Fox and her cousin the popular Laurence Fox – best known for being the former husband of Billie Piper as he is as side-kick to Kevin Whately in the ITV detective series Lewis.

She was always born to be a star, many would argue, but she has certainly earned her place at TV’s top table. But she admits the famous name can have its drawbacks.

“It becomes much more of a challenge to be seen in your own right,” the motherof-one explains. “That’s why I always liked going to America, because there were no preconceptions of who you were. People weren’t expecting your mum or dad to a

walk through the door. You were just taken at face value.

“I’ve always been brought up to stand on my own two feet and not rely too heavily on everyone else around me. My parents instilled a really good work ethic from when I was little – if you want to have money to spend on holidays, you earn it.

“So I’ve always been someone who wanted to be able to survive by myself, but I think you have to let down the barriers a little bit – let other people in.”

With recent roles including filming in Kent for the second series of Sky One’s success Anglo-French thriller The Tunnel: Sabotage, her personal life has not been as apparently straight forward as her career.

Engaged to Charing Heath’s Vic Reeves back in 2000 after the pair fell for one another during filming for Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), five years later she was married to Jared Harris, son of actor Robert Harris. But she suffered a miscarriage two years later and by 2009 it ended in divorce.

A year later, she was pregnant with the child of her relationship with actor Jeremy Gilley. Little Rose was born later that year, but her relationship with Gilley was over the following year.

“Being a mum is quite simply the most important thing in my life and the best and most rewarding thing of my life so far,” she reflects. “Being with Rose makes getting older better and better and better and my priorities are different.

My life now is about family.

Work life is important but it’s a secondary thing and that makes me more settled with who I am.

I’m much more able to sit down and be at one with myself, but I’d be lying if I said I’d found the perfect balance. It’s always a juggling act, but it’s just that you get better at the juggling.

“Your twenties are so focused on work and being all around the world, then suddenly your thirties are about working out the home life and now I’m 40 I just love being able to go to work as well and finding that balance.

“My life now is about family. Work life is important but it’s a secondary thing and that makes me more settled with who I am. I’m much more able to sit down and be at one with myself, but I’d be lying if I said I’d found the perfect balance. It’s always a juggling act, but it’s just that you get better at the juggling.

“Am I a workaholic? I think that’s still there, but having a child puts things in a different order. You choose work in a different way. I’ve been very lucky. I’ve done little bits here and there and had lots of time at home during the last series of Silent Witness. It was much more weighted in the boys’ favour so I got to be at home more.”

Silent Witness has ensured her household name status and with the series returning earlier this year, it continues to pack viewing figure clout.

“I have loved the crime genre since I was little. I grew up reading Agatha Christie novels and Sherlock Holmes, and

watching Inspector Morse and Cracker.

“I still remember the first time I saw the film Seven. So being asked to be part of Silent Witness was a dream come true.

When I got the part I watched all the Amanda Burton episodes [she replaced Burton as the main lead] so that I got to know the show, and I loved that it had crime-solving and the science, where you learn something. I consider myself very lucky to be working and doing something I truly enjoy and am interested in.

“Silent Witness is a crime-solving show with a difference because it is so focused on solving the crime through the body.

That’s interesting because you get to learn about forensic science as well, so you see not just the solving of the crime, but how it is solved and all the medical knowledge, science and technology used in that process. I also think there was an appreciation for the format of the show, which is much rarer now, in that it is more satisfying having the story completed over two consecutive nights.”

With both the star and broadcaster so at one with the show, it seems almost inevitable she will return to it soon.

CLEAN OUT THE GREENHOUSE

Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring.

Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners.

For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!

DRAIN AND LAG

Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.

PREPARE SOIL FOR NEXT YEAR

For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier.

For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms.

If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

PLANTING

Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes.

Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed. mmm

RHS GARDEN WISLEY Christmas spectacular

HS Garden Wisley in Surrey will be holding a fantastic programme of events throughout November and December to delight visitors young and old.

Back for a second year, Christmas Glow (1st December – 2nd January 2017) promises to be bigger, brighter and better than ever. Designers of cultivated illumination, Jigantics will be creating a captivating light installation with giant, botanically inspired blooms, set to spark the imagination. This event offers the ideal opportunity to enjoy the atmosphere of the festive season in a beautiful garden setting.

There will be even more gigantic blooms to discover than last year, as visitors get the chance to wander through the garden, as well as seeing all the natural Christmas decorations. In addition, we will also be lighting up some of our own magnificent Wisley trees, including the liquidambar on Seven Acres West Lawn, giant redwood around the Pinetum edge and the Scots pine in the Loggia.

Wisley is open every day except for Christmas Day Monday – Friday from 10am – 6pm (8pm throughout December) Saturday – Sunday (including Bank Holidays) from 9am – 6pm (Closes 4:30pm 30th October 2016 – 12th March 2017).

The Glasshouse will be decorated in the style of a magical gingerbread lodge complete with colourful floral displays of poinsettias and seasonal plants such as Christmas cactus and bromeliads. There will also be an exhibit of the Wisley Citrus Collection in The Glasshouse Gallery.

The lake surrounding the Glasshouse will be illuminated with lanterns, offering magnificent views. There will be a special Light Switch On ceremony at 6:30pm on 30th November with a late-night Christmas shopping evening. A special parade is also planned by Jigantics, who have been working with local schools to create and design paper lanterns from tissue paper and willow.

The garden will operate extended opening times during the month of December until 8pm (last entry 7pm) to allow visitors time to enjoy their visit, grab a bite to eat or browse the fantastic range of gifts on offer in the Wisley Plant Centre and Gift Shop.

CHATHAM HOSPITAL PLEDGES TO BECOME dementia Friendly

Baldwins Travel Group was recently named as ‘Leisure Agent of the Year 2016’ by Advantage Travel Partnership. Advantage Travel Partnership hosted its first ever awards ceremony on Friday 30th September to recognise success among members and suppliers. An independent Chatham hospital has pledged to become dementia friendly, by joining Medway Dementia Action Alliance (DAA). As a part of this initiative Spire Alexandra Hospital will introduce the use of a butterfly identification marker to signify when a patient has dementia. As well as this, visitors and patients will be accompanied by a trained individual throughout the duration of their visit, in order to receive the support they often need. The hospital is working to ensure patients with dementia are allocated longer clinic appointments, with the appointment to take place at the start of the clinic, and thus reduce waiting times.

Ann Hughes, Clinical Governance Lead for the hospital, said: “We are excited to be working with Dementia Action Alliance, to share resources and networking with other businesses to ensure our hospital is a safe, less threatening environment for those living with dementia or learning difficulties. We also aim to support staff members who are carers for, often elderly, relatives who have dementia.”

The Duke of Edinburgh in Barming near Maidstone has been shortlisted for Best Pub restaurant in the national FreeFrom Eating Out Awards.

The Shepherd Neame pub launched a 100% gluten-free menu in march this year, which has been a huge success, with customers regularly travelling down from London and across Kent, and support from celebrity Chef Phil Vickery on Twitter. its Gastropub-style menu features a variety of dishes to be enjoyed in a tapas style, such as mini fish and chips, garlic and lime marinated chicken skewers, and mini pork and apple burgers. A selection of dishes is served on the Duke’s Sharing Tapas Platter, and there are also oven baked flat breads with a variety of toppings available.

The Duke of Edinburgh is one of eight independent pub restaurants across the UK shortlisted for the honour in the FreeFrom eating Out awards, which recognise excellence among establishments catering for allergic, Coeliac and ‘freefrom’ customers.

Licensee Adam Phillips said: “We are delighted to be shortlisted for this national award. SILVER MEDAL FOR TREE OF HOPE CYBATHLETE

A disabled man supported by Tunbridge Wells charity, Tree of Hope, has returned from the world’s first Cybathlon with a Silver medal for Great Britain.

Using bionic assistive technology that enables him to pedal despite being paralysed, Johnny Beer, from Aylesbury, saw off competition from nine different countries in the qualifying rounds of the FES bike race.

The event in Zurich, Switzerland, showcased technology that helps people living with disabilities cope more effectively with daily life. Despite his eventual success, Johnny says the first few hours in Zurich were a nightmare.

“There were so many problems after arriving it looked like it was going to be a complete disaster.

Luckily, the BerkelBike team persevered, resulting in me smashing my personal best and winning a Silver medal. Thanks for all the great support from everybody; it’s been one heck of a week.”

Johnny, 21, was paralysed in a trampolining accident five years ago. His extraordinary commitment to staying fit and active is supported by fundraising through Tree of Hope that helps him pay for pioneering training sessions at Neurokinex, based in Watford.

FURLEY PAGE MAKES A BIG IMPACT AT PLOUGHING MATCH A bomb scare failed to spoil the fun as law firm Furley Page welcomed guests to its marquee at the 72nd East Kent Ploughing Match at Grange Farm, Mill Lane, Nonington, near Canterbury.

In addition to its annual laser clay competition, this year Furley Page teamed up with The Hawking Centre from Doddington Place Gardens and guests were entertained by a birds of prey flying display, terrier racing and ‘have a go’ archery. A highly competitive laser clay competition ended with Paul Abbott claiming the highest score. Unexpected drama was provided when an unexploded mortar shell was discovered during the ploughing match. Police and a bomb disposal team were called and a controlled explosion was carried out.

Kent place names, field names and surnames will be discussed at a conference at Canterbury Christ Church University on Saturday 12th November (2016).

Some of today’s Canterbury place names remind us of orchards, fields and meadows that disappeared many years ago.

Solly’s Orchard is now a garden at Greyfriars Chapel; miller’s Field, beside the river Stour, is now mostly covered by a car park; Beverley Meadow, St Stephen’s, is now a public park.

Chapman’s Meadow, on the Pilgrims’ Way, is still unspoilt but is threatened by a vast 4,000-homes garden suburb, the biggest planning application in the city’s history. It will cover an area of farmland larger than the city centre. in maidstone, Fairmeadow, where the town’s fairs were held, is now a multi-lane highway to the m20.

Examples like these will be cited by Dr Paul Cullen, an authority on English place names. Originally from Pluckley and Canterbury, Paul is now a research associate at the University of the West of England in Bristol and is also known as folk-punk musician Paul Carbuncle.

NHS REFUSAL To FUND SPECIALIST CARE IS RISKING LIVES AND WASTING MILLIoNS IN SoUTH EAST

October saw the launch of three and four bedroom detached homes at Heron Fields, in Sittingbourne, Kent, a flagship development from Westerhill Homes and Hyde New Homes. Local Kent family man, Adam Phillips, an electrician, has already purchased one of the three-bedroom homes and recently moved in with his wife, young son and new-born baby.

Adam Phillips said: “We are so impressed with everything at Heron Fields. Having the chance to live and work in such a superb location and within the perfect home to raise our family - we just had to sign up there and then. We are so lucky to have the playing field close by as well. It will be perfect for my son and I to have a kick-around in when he is a little older.”

A group of disability campaigners from the South East have criticised local NHS bosses for ignoring calls to invest in specialist care for people with muscular dystrophy.

NHS providers have refused to fund a single, vital ‘care advisor’ role in the South East, a decision which is costing the taxpayer £6million a year on avoidable hospital admissions. The lack of coordinated care is only leaving patients vulnerable to severe health complications.

Sulaiman Khan, from Woodford Green, East London, has congenital muscular dystrophy, while Andy Robertson, 35, from Canterbury, has limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Both conditions cause severe muscle-wasting and weakening.

Care advisors provide practical and emotional support for families affected by muscle-wasting conditions. They also offer advice and information, and educate other local health professionals.

Shockingly, there are no care advisors based at the eight specialist neuromuscular centres in London. These centres provide healthcare for around 9,000 people in London, as well as a further 5,000 in the South East area.

This compares to four expert care advisors for 6,000 people in the South West, three for 6,000 in Yorkshire and the Humber and three for 5,000 people in the East Midlands.

In July, an in-depth report from Muscular Dystrophy UK revealed 40% of hospital admissions could have been prevented had patients had access to better coordinated care.

23% oF PARENTS IN THE SoUTH EAST ARE STRESSED ABoUT HALF-TERM With half-term fast approaching, although the kids might be excited to have some time off, 1 in 5 parents find the break stressful due to the associated costs – both for childcare and keeping the kids entertained. According to the latest research from Equifax, parents pay on average £144 for childcare during half-term and £179 on keeping their children entertained. This brings the average total to £323 for the week - over £60 per day.

The holiday appears to be taking its toll on parents in Scotland the most, with 32% saying they are stressed out about the cost, followed by 29% of parents in the South West and 23% in the South East.

The cost of keeping the kids entertained also comes at a price and, again, parents in the North East are some of the biggest spenders with 18% having to pay out up to £200. Parents in the North West are also having to dig deep, with nearly a quarter of those living in the region spending up to £150.

“The cost of half-term is clearly taking its toll on parents, with an overwhelming 62% saying that the cost of school holidays is increasing year on year,” said Lisa Hardstaff, Equifax credit information expert. “It is only the first half-term of the academic year, yet it is interesting to see just how quickly the costs can add up. In previous research we found that parents had to find an additional £300 to kit their child out at the start of new academic year.”

CHARITY CALLS FOR SCHOOLS IN KENT TO CLOSE GAP FOR DISADVANTAGED PUPILS National education charity, Achievement for All, is calling for schools in Kent to implement its schools programme after an independent review by PwC revealed that disadvantaged pupils from schools supported by the charity are closing the achievement gap with their peers in reading, writing and maths.

A review of 25 schools supported by the Achievement for All Achieving Schools programme between 2011 and 2015, indicated that pupils with special educational needs (SEN), those eligible for Pupil Premium funding and low attainers consistently made progress at a higher rate than expected for their year groups. One school reported that it had moved out of the bottom cohort in the country for maths into the top 25 per cent.

Achievement for All is focused on raising the aspirations, access and achievement of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities.

The charity’s Achieving Schools programme aims to create better life chances for children and young people, and provide a solution to break intergenerational poverty. Achieving Schools is a two-year whole school improvement framework aimed at helping the one in five children who are falling behind at school.

The programme is delivered directly into schools by Achievement for All coaches - education specialists who have an extensive background in the sector.

PwC’s review shows that the Achieving Schools programme has reached 2,547 schools since the charity began five years ago, with nearly 100,000 children directly benefitting from the programme.

HALCYON DAYS of flight AVIATION HISTORIAN ROBIN J BROOKS REFLECTS ON A PERIOD WHEN BRITAIN REALLY DID RULE THE SKIES AND GRAVESEND FIGURED VERY PROMINENTLY IN THE ACCOLADE.

ention the name Gravesend Airport and most memories reflect back to the Battle of Britain when it was a fighter command station. Long before this however, the airfield was home to a company producing racing planes designed to bring glory to an industry that had mainly manufactured fighting aircraft during World War One. The story really begins during that conflict when Australian born Edward Wikner Percival had travelled to Britain and joined the Royal Flying Corps. He was assigned to No. 60 Squadron in France in 1917, where he honed his flying skills before transferring to No. 11 Squadron and seeing service in the Middle East.

It was whilst serving in Egypt that he designed and built his first aeroplane based on the Bristol F.2B. With the Armistice Percival was appointed to the Air Ministry as a test pilot but not happy with this, he left to form his own aviation company in partnership with Lieutenant

Commander E B W Leake. In 1932 he set up business in the former British Aircraft Company premises owned by Jimmy Lowe-Wylde in Maidstone (See July 2015 issue) and began to manufacture the first of his designs known as the Gull series.

The Percival Aircraft Company, as it became known, soon found that the production of this series of aircraft was too large for the Maidstone premises. It was necessary for Percival to contract work out to George Parnall and Sons of Yate in Gloucestershire. This arrangement lasted for two years until 1934 when an opportunity came to move the company to the new airport at Gravesend. With all the legal requirements completed the setting up of the new factory went swiftly ahead.

It was not long before Percival turned his thoughts to the King’s Cup Air Race and just how he could adapt one of the Gull series to win. In a few weeks he designed and built a small, single engine, low wing monoplane of wooden construction. It was powered by a 165hp Napier Javelin 1A engine with the first flights taking place in a

March 1934. Exchanging the Javelin engine for a Gipsy Six engine, Percival entered the aircraft, G-ACND, for the King’s Cup race of July 13th, 1934. Sadly he failed to find a place despite a speed of 191mph and disillusioned, he bought the aircraft back to Gravesend and promptly dismantled it.

Undeterred, Percival built the Mew Gull Mark II G-ACND which after its first appearance at the Hendon SBAC show was re-engined with a French 180hp Regnier engine. With this the aircraft was entered in the French Coupe Armand Esders, a race of 1,046 miles. Averaging a speed of 188mph, it won the premier award. Returning to Gravesend the French engine was replaced by the usual Gipsy Six but on subsequent flights, the Gull was flown by Count de Chateaubrun, the Percival representative in France. Unfortunately he acquired the reputation of being the only pilot to bail out of a Mew Gull when he was forced to abandon G-ACND due to a blanket of fog.

By now the company was firmly established at Gravesend Airport.

Two hangars had been constructed to accommodate the Percival works and with an increasing workforce, production of the Gull series gathered pace. Edgar himself, apart from being around the factory most times, was busy arranging entries to most of the air races of the day. A noted and well respected character, he could always be recognised due to the fact that he chose to fly dressed in a lounge suit topped by a Trilby hat. Consequently he became known to all as ‘the hat’!

September 1935 saw Percival enter his third Mew Gull G-AEKL (this was the first production aircraft) in the King’s Cup Race managing a respectable 4th place. Later in the year the Folkestone Trophy Race gave him a 7th place and with two more Mew Gulls coming off the production line, this was encouraging enough for Percival to enter the aircraft in the Schlesinger African Air Race in 1936. The three aircraft chosen were G-ADKL flown by Tom Campbell Black, ZS-AHM for Major A Miller and ZS-AHO for Captain S Halse. Tragedy

was to strike before the race started when Campbell Black was involved in a taxiing accident at Speke Airport and was sadly killed. The other two aircraft were also beset by problems caused by fuel and earth getting up into the Spats or wheel housing.

None of this however was to deter Percival from racing his Mew Gulls and over the next year or so there were wins at the Newcastle Race when Charles Gardner reached a speed of 221mph and Alex Henshaw won the Folkestone Trophy Race at a speed of 210mph. In 1937 all three Mew Gulls were entered for the King’s Cup Air Race with wins for two of them.

By this time Gravesend and Percival were becoming well known throughout the aviation racing world. This fame also attracted many personalities to fly the Gull range from Gravesend. In 1933 Charles Kingsford Smith flew a Percival Gull Four named ‘Miss Southern Cross’ from England to Australia in the record breaking time of 7 days, 4 hours and 44 minutes. Miss Amy Mollinson (Johnson) left Gravesend on May 4th, 1936 in a Percival Gull Six setting a new world record for a flight to South Africa and back followed by Miss Jean Batten from New Zealand who flew a Percival Gull from England to Australia in October 1936. With his production of the Gull series and the fact that Gravesend Airport was becoming a starting point for breaking records, Edgar Percival began to look around for a less crowded site. He chose Luton Airport in Bedfordshire and with the move completed by 1938 Gravesend was set to become a fighter command airfield for the RAF. Percival went on to design and build the rugged little Proctor aircraft which saw service at many wartime airfields. In 1944 the company was taken over by Hunting Aircraft and although Edgar Percival did form a new company, the halcyon days of flying were long gone. Very little remains of Gravesend Airport today, the site being swallowed up by the Riverside housing estate but the Mew Gull, G-AEXF, is seen at many air displays as part of the Shuttleworth Collection. mmm By ROBIN J BROOKS

he Movember Foundation is the leading global organization committed to changing the face of men’s health. This is achieved by challenging men to grow moustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.

The Movember community has raised over $550 million, and has funded more than 800 programmes to date.

This work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems.

Men and women sign up online to grow or support only the moustache. Men start November 1st clean-shaven and grow their moustache for 30 days, getting friends, family and colleagues to donate to their moustache-growing efforts.
