elcome to the November edition of mmm which you will probably be reading with the sound of fireworks exploding all around you! With the nights now drawing in, the explosion of light and sound can bring a little colour and excitement back to our days...just that it seems to last for weeks doesn’t it? There are lots of great organised displays taking place where you can enjoy a hot drink while you admire the pyrotechnics and I, like many others, will be joining the crowds to have a memorable evening out. Now, just to bring you back down to earth, but – whisper it – there are just a little over six weeks to go until Christmas...and that means there’s no better time to start your planning for the festive season. Inside this edition we’ve got details of a number of special events designed to get you in the mood for the season of goodwill. And, of course, we’d urge you all to pay special attention to our advertisers’ messages – they can be relied upon to offer some great inspiration for gifts; from fun-packed nights out to traditional and sometimes unusual present ideas. With most people just two pay days away from Christmas Day itself, there’s no better time to start your preparations. I’m sure you don’t need reminding that it’s so important to support our local shops and traders at this crucial time of the year. So rather than going online, why not make a day of it in our town centres? You can enjoy the thrill of seeing the items you want to buy, enjoy a coffee and a meal, and then not have to worry about your items arriving in the post. While you’re planning your shopping trip, we think we’ve got plenty to keep you entertained. Here at mmm we’re all very excited about the prospect of seeing Strictly Come Dancing’s glamorous duo Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag when the two make a special appearance at the Mercure Maidstone Great Danes Hotel next year. Inside we take a look at the wonderful pair and their remarkable success so far and how you can get tickets to watch them in action. They’ll even give you some tips on how to improve your footwork! Anton is certainly no stranger to Kent as he grew up in Sevenoaks, so the the show should be a very happy homecoming. In addition to that, we have our normal dose of fashion, business and leisure for you to read and enjoy. So we hope you enjoy mmm this month and please don’t hesitate to get in touch ahead of our fun-packed special Christmas edition.

dancing into our hearts Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag are putting on a show not to be missed right here in Maidstone next year

t’s a rare opportunity to get the chance to learn how to dance in the company of perhaps the two most famous ballroom performers in the country, but next year there’s an opening to do just that. Because at the Mercure Maidstone Hotel, the glitz and glamour of Anton Du Beke and Erin Boag will waltz in for a very special evening. Not only do those attending get to learn to dance with the stars in a 50 minute workshop, but they then can enjoy a fourcourse gala meal and watch the dance duo perform their breathtaking ballroom showcase up close and personal. For Anton it will be a return to a county in which he was raised – having first discovered the delights of dancing at the age of 14 whilst born and bred in Sevenoaks. The appearance will come hot on the heels of their spring 2017 nationwide Swing Time tour, which will be touring UK theatres from January through until April. Featuring such classic tunes as I Could Have Danced All Night, I Got Rhythm, Guys and Dolls, Moondance and Strike Up The Band, the duo are already rehearsing in between Anton’s appearance on the current series of Strictly Come Dancing. The top rated show, which culminates with a grand final at Christmas, has shown no signs of its popularity declining in what

is the final year with Dartford’s Len Goodman as head judge (a role, coincidentally, many believe may go to Anton next year). Viewing figures are already up on last year, with more than 8.5 million viewers tuning in. Anton, 50, who has appeared on all series of the show, was this year partnered with actress Lesley Joseph – best known for her long running role in comedy Birds of a Feather. Erin, 41, who’s been in 10 series, sat out this year’s show. And for Anton, the joy of being on the annual TV extravaganza remains as compelling as ever. “I’ve been the luckiest of all the professional dancers,” he says, “by having the most interesting and lovely ladies to dance with over the years. a

On Strictly, we’re just making a television show – the person I’m dancing with can’t dance, they’re doing their best and we’re not going to win the world championships. At a professional level, I expect things to be great.

Continued from page 13

“If I hadn’t danced with Ann Widdecombe that would have been my loss because she was a joy – such a scream, and fun to be with. “I wouldn’t have missed those wonderful moments, like throwing Judy Murray across the floor, and our routine with her as Cruella de Vil accompanied by two Dalmatian dogs. “And, for heaven’s sake, Jerry Hall’s a living legend and also hilarious. I’ve enjoyed every second of it all. “That’s my goal when I partner someone on Strictly, that they’ll have a nice time and enjoy it. If they do, of course, it helps them give a good performance, but for me, whatever their result, I want them to look back and say, ‘I had a great time’.” And while Erin can focus her time on the upcoming tour – she and Anton have been selling out arenas for years – she admits she still has much to prove.

“As a performer you always want to prove - and improve – yourself; you need challenges. I spent many years competing worldwide before taking part in Strictly which had a competitive buzz all of its own. “Every series brought the fresh challenge of training my celebrity dance partner to dance the best they possibly can. “I’m always busy touring and teaching with appearances and presenting, even designing dance costumes - it’s a full time job all year round.” Erin met Anton Du Beke in 1997 and the pair have danced together ever since. Born in New Zealand, she started dancing when she was just 3 years old. Like so many, she began with ballet before progressing into ballroom, Latin and jazz. a

PROTECTING YOUR skin this winter STAY SMART AND PROTECT YOUR SKIN THE RIGHT WAY THIS WINTER SEASON

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. A radiant and healthy skin reflects a healthy body. For glowing skin include in your diet lots of green vegetables and fruits to get the required level of vitamin B and minerals. Omega 3 and 6 are fatty acids which are emerging as one of the most important components for proper skin hydration. In fact, deficiency of these essential fatty acids causes a peak in dry and itchy skin along with brittle nails. Good sources of omega fatty acids are oily fish as well as nuts, avocados, flaxseed, green leafy vegetables and legumes. While we often do so much to care for our skin we may miss out on the most basic thing—drinking enough water. This is one of the simplest, yet best things you can do for your skin; along with giving your body undisturbed sleep of 7– 8 hours each night. Caffeinated beverages exacerbate dry skin and should be avoided. Green tea, coconut water and fresh fruit juices help to replenish and rehydrate, so enjoy them liberally.

E45 lotion for very dry skin

FEED YOUR SKIN

AVOID SOAP

A soap’s pH level is usually more than 9, while the skin’s pH is 5.5. This high pH causes the skin barrier to breakdown, exuding water, lipids and nutrients. This contributes to dryness and irritation. Excess usage of soap can even result in rashes known as ‘irritant dermatitis.’ No soap on the face, is an absolute. Solution: Opt for moisturising washes. Body washes’ pHs are more balanced than soaps. Also, try to look for washes that include ingredients known as natural moisturising factors. a BEAUTY FEATURE

MAKE-UP TIPS FOR WINTER

TOP TIPS FOR WINTER SKIN CARE

• Chapped lips are the number one

Changing trends and seasons are always refreshing, however winter poses the worst challenge for the skin and not to mention make-up. These basic tips will help you to retain your skin’s lustre. Solution: Put aside all your rich foundations and switch to tinted moisturisers. Avoid powders or mineral based products. Always apply a lip balm before wearing a lipstick and remember ‘less is more.’

problem in winter. Refrain from licking your lips to moisturise them at all times. It will make them even drier. Keep a chap-stick or Vaseline handy just in case. • Use products that are versatile and provide moiturisation as well as sun protection. • Physical exfoliation like using a pumice stone to shed dry skin is a‘no-no.’ Chemical exfoliation with products having lactic acid or using a home-made milk pack is preferable. • Fabrics like wool can aggravate irritation. Opt for lighter winter-wear versus your usual woollens but if you must, layer cotton apparel under your woollens. • Any inflammation, redness, itchiness or flakiness should not be overlooked. Do visit a dermatologist immediately. • Moisturise and moisturise again.

MOISTURISE

Olay 7-in-1 anti-ageing moisturiser and serum

Most people bathe, rub their skin dry with a towel and then get dressed. This process ensures that the water from the shower / bath doesn’t penetrate the skin, resulting in a drier epidermis. Solution: The correct post-bath regime should be to first pat the skin dry, instead of rubbing. Then, use a body lotion generously immediately after bathing to seal in the moisture. The body lotion does not need to be expensive but effective. It should contain at least five per cent urea for optimal water binding, as well as essential natural moisturising factors. Hands and feet require special care, particularly during winter, since they have the thickest epidermis and as mentioned before, urea-based products work the best for these regions. a

ENVIRONMENT MATTERS

GO THE MILKY WAY

Trying out hand-picked home remedies every now and then might actually bring you closer to the soft, supple skin you desire without burning a hole in your pocket. Solution: Keep aside 4 – 5 tsp of raw milk every morning before boiling it to brew your tea/coffee. Add a few drops of rose water to it and dab this mixture over your face and body. Leave it for about 15 minutes and then rinse with cold water.

Garnier miracle sleeping cream

Dry cold air, wind and even the central heating, deprive the skin of its moisture, leaving it dry and rough. To simply increase the moisture in the air, humidifiers are recommended. Although, having a hot shower may feel desirable it can aggravate the moisture loss from the skin. Swap steaming hot showers with a lukewarm bath or just reduce the time that you expose your skin to piping hot water. Five minutes is more than enough to enjoy your shower and protect your skin from over-drying.

FITNESS TIPS to inspire you this month CHECK OUT OUR COLLECTION OF WORKOUT TIPS TO HELP IMPROVE YOUR FITNESS ROUTINE

WORK OUT IN THE MORNING

You’ll boost your metabolism for the day. If you wait, something else will come up. It’s all too easy to find an excuse not to hit the gym at the end of a long day — and while you may feel groggy in the morning, you’ll be surprised how quickly a jog will wake you up. Not only does it pose the advantage of getting your gym routine out of the way, but a morning workout will also give you a healthy adrenaline kick. This will keep you awake more than any amount of coffee intake.

DON’T STARVE YOURSELF

Fasting won’t do anyone with serious toning and weight loss goals any favours. Cutting a substantial amount of calories from your diet will slow your metabolism, making the dieter feel deprived. This typically ends in a binge eating session and subsequent weight gain. Rather than cut calories so drastically, try eating smaller meals on a more frequent basis throughout the day. Kaehler also recommends that you eat slowly: Count to ten after each bite. Are you hungry, or are you just eating for the sake of eating? Give your body and brain time to decide. FITNESS TIPS

DO MORE THAN JUST CARDIO

One of the biggest fitness mistakes women make is just doing cardio. Cardio alone can enable you to look thinner however it will not add to your body’s overall definition. In other words, you’ll wind up smaller but completely lacking in muscle tone. To avoid this problem, try incorporating some strength workouts into your cardio routine. Pilates is a great way to feel the heat, especially when compounded with definition-building squats and lunges. With enough variation in your routine, you’ll see noticeable changes within weeks.

DON’T WATCH TV ON THE TREADMILL OR ELLIPTICAL

People who go to the gym should avoid being distracted by the screen in front of them. You don’t work out as intensely, which means you burn far fewer calories than if you go hard for that same amount of time. Turn off the TV and get more results out of your precious minutes at the gym! You can strain your neck. When you’re on the treadmill, you really need to face forward with your head, your heart, and your hips all lined up But if you’re looking down at the screen—or even if you’re looking all the way up if your treadmill doesn’t have its own TV and you’re watching one on the wall—you aren’t looking straight ahead.

mmm 41

CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE

Your body is very smart; it will adjust to any workout routine in six weeks, so you’ve got to switch things up. This doesn’t mean a complete overhaul of your routine every week: Simply make minor adjustments and tweaks to maintain your body at a peak level of strength.

MAKE TIME FOR FITNESS EVERY DAY

Doing a little bit all the time is so much better than doing a lot once in a while. A consistent routine — no matter how insignificant it may feel — will give your metabolism an ongoing kick in the right direction. Set your daily workout goal at a reasonable measure and time, so that you don’t feel overwhelmed by the need to race to the gym; a little bit done consistently will go a long way.

STRENGTHEN YOUR MIND AND BODY WITH YOGA

Working out isn’t always about self-punishment and a “no pain, no gain” mentality: It can also serve as a retreat from the stresses of everyday life. If you’re considering taking a day off from your usual routine, yoga is a great way to keep the body and mind active, while also reducing the risk of overexertion and injury. a

FITNESS TIPS

Continued from page 41

FOR FAST RESULTS, TRY INTERVALS

If you alternate your cardio — biking, running, whichever suits you best — at your normal pace with just a minute or two or all-out quickness, you’ll be burning fat faster than ever. Intervals can be especially effective when combining strength and cardio: Try doing ten minutes of cardio, then adding three or four strength and conditioning moves to your regimen — think lunges or bicep curls. mmm

Artisan Christmas Gift Fair, The Canterbury Tales 26th - 27th November

Christmas at Hever Castle 24th November - 23rd December For one weekend only the Canterbury Tales will be opening its doors free for all guests to come and enjoy the Artisan Christmas Fair. It’s time to start your Christmas gift shopping as you step back in time to medieval England to browse the various stalls. Canterbury Tales look forward to welcoming you to the medieval fair! Souvenirs were as popular then, as they are nowadays, with badges made of tin, lead or pewter which were sold as a visible sign of a pilgrims journey. Why not take your own pilgrimage to the Canterbury Tales and see what trinkets you find. N.B. Please note - The Canterbury Tales visitor attraction will only be operational at the Gift Fair on 26th/27th November. It will not be possible to take the usual tour. MULLED Wine

N

othing fills a home with Christmas spirit like the aroma of mulled wine on the stove. Cinnamon, orange peel, allspice, cloves, pink peppercorns and ginger are some of our favourites. Similar to a warm Sangria, there are many ways that this can be prepared and rules don’t apply as strictly compared to other cocktails, so have some fun with it. You can use fresh fruits or dried, but a great way to share with friends is to make mulling spice gift packs. Then all they need to do is add some wine, sugar and brandy and they are off to the races.

Mulled Wine Ingredients

2/3 cup of honey or sugar 3 cinnamon sticks 8 to 10 cloves 2 tablespoons ground ginger (can be substituted with allspice) 1 orange, peeled and sliced (keep the peel to add zest for taste) 2 ounces of brandy (optional) Combine the ingredients (except the brandy) in a large pot over low to medium heat and warm carefully. Keep below a simmer for 20 to 25 minutes, stirring frequently. Despite its Hungarian name, ‘forralt bor’ (boiled wine), it’s important not to boil the wine, as the boiling point of alcohol is lower than that of water so by the time it comes to a boil both its alcohol content and wonderful aroma will be gone. Finally stir in the brandy, serve hot and enjoy.

From the top left: Mulled Wine, Tesco, £21.00. Aromatic Mulled Red Wine - case of 6, Marks and Spencer, £30.00. Mulled Wine Sachet, Hotel Chocolat, £5.00. Mulled Wine Gift Set, Very, £20.00.

SILVERSEA

ready to take flight

A

Silversea offer inspirational cruises to over 800 destinations. They will unveil their new flagship Silver Muse in April 2017

longtime favourite on everyone’s bucket list, a luxury cruise is the stuff that dreams are made of. But there is luxury and ultraluxury — while the former may take you from destination to destination in comfort; the latter will take you there in style. Banish all thoughts of wave machines and theme nights; ultra-luxury is all about understated elegance and a huge destination choice. From white gloved butler service to exquisite fine dining with a large complimentary wine list, ultra luxury is where it’s at these days. However travel savvy you are, there are undoubtedly many places that you still need to go, not to mention things that you still need to see. And the best thing about an ultra-luxury cruise is that you can tick off ten countries in ten days, each one better than the last. Choose from iconic destinations such as the romantic and spectacularly beautiful Portofino in Italy, perhaps spotting a star or two of the celebrity kind while you’re there. Playground of the rich and famous Monte

Carlo is always a firm favourite too, where the mega-yachts outnumber the moguls at an easy ratio of ten to one. You can try island hopping in Greece, channelling your inner Bardot in Saint Tropez, strolling Las Ramblas in Barcelona or visiting UNESCO sights in Croatia. The freedom to do everything – or nothing – is all yours. Just go to bed in one place and wake up in the next. But while visiting the Mediterranean in all her glory is not to be missed in the summer, where does one travel in style during the winter months? Why, the Caribbean of course! With so many islands in the Caribbean Sea it would be impossible, not to mention costly, to try and visit them all and to choose between the gentle sounds of reggae in Grand Turk, the slick French influence in St. Barts or the paradisiac flour-like beaches in Antigua would be a crime. Can’t choose which one you prefer? Take them all. And if one day you don’t want to get off the ship — after all, travelling in style and having every whim catered too can be so tiring — then sipping a Tequila Sunrise by the pool with a TRAVEL ASPECT

Continued from page 71

the soft breeze on your shoulders has a certain seductive quality too. If between the Med and the Caribbean your wanderlust is still not satiated, you’ll be pleased to note that more and more people are taking a longer break to visit farther flung lands. In fact, the old adage that cruising has lost its charm and glamour and only takes you to tried and tested destinations is simply not true. Ultra-luxury cruise companies are seeing a tremendous rise in young couples who are interested in visiting places that traditional methods of holidaying don’t really cover. Silversea’s Circle South America cruise for example not only offers guests privileged entry into national parks such as Machu Picchu, Torres del Paine and Iguazu Falls but covers almost every aspect of a huge continent that would be impossible to see otherwise. From the Panama Canal to Ushuaia – affectionately known as the last city on earth, cruising definitely offers people a new perception of travel. The romance of the seas, constant pampering, off-the-beaten track ports and a hassle free holiday –what’s not to like?

DIAMOND RAIL

Winter rail adventures

I

t’s not everyone’s favourite time of year and who can blame them, especially with the weather here in the UK. Last year was exceptionally wet and windy (yes, that’s when the Met Office started naming storms –all 11 of them), while other years have seen the whole country grind to a halt with just a dusting of snow. And when it does snow properly we end up with wet slush and waterlogged gardens. On top of that we have the short days and long nights to contend with, seasonal flu to avoid, heating bills to pay – the list goes on. But the truth is... winter can be beautiful. You just need to go to the right places. Diamond Rail Holidays are specialists in the travel industry and their extensive collection features a number of itineraries that embrace the magic of winter. Think snow-covered mountains, alpine air and evergreen forests, remote villages, roaring fires and hearty meals. Here’s a closer look at some of the amazing destinations they visit and the experiences you can enjoy:

THE SWISS ALPS

If you’re searching for a winter paradise, you’re sure to find it in the Swiss Alps. Skiing, hiking, climbing, sightseeing, TRAVEL ASPECT

relaxing – these mountains cater for all kinds of activities and draw visitors from around the world. The railways are particularly special. Not only are they punctual and reliable, they take you places that no other form of transport can, passing through untouched landscapes that leave you totally in awe of nature’s beauty. Even the towns and cities in the foothills offer breathtaking scenery together with that distinct alpine atmosphere.

INTERLAKEN

The town of Interlaken is tucked away in the Bernese Oberland between the glassy waters of Lake Thun and Lake Brienz. Looking down on the town are the mighty peaks of the Eiger, the Mönch and the Jungfrau, which are the starting point for many an adventure. It’s a setting like nowhere else and the perfect base for exploring the region.

THE OBERALP PASS

Standing over 2,000 metres above sea level, this mountain pass is one of the most spectacular roads in the world. The massive amounts of snow here can cause it to close at anytime, even in mid May, but that doesn’t stop the Glacier Express. This shiny

red train cuts through the heart of the Swiss Alps and reaches its highest point at the Oberalp Pass regardless of the snow.

THE AUSTRIAN ALPS

If Julie Andrews warbling on a mountaintop is your only experience of the Austrian Alps, you need to do something about it. This stunning region brings together the magnificent alpine scenery with a unique culture centred on the traditions of farming, cheese-making and woodworking. One of the best ways to get around is aboard the little trains that crisscross the mountains, giving you the opportunity to visit different resorts, meet different people, enjoy different views, and form your own opinion of the Austrian Alps.

THE ZILLER VALLEY

Hugged by the Zillertal Alps with the Ziller river tumbling along its floor, this valley is made up of a wonderful mix of landscapes. The local folk music group Schürzenjäger – who are known way beyond the local borders – started out here, but it’s the views that most come to see. From the skiing town of Mayrhofen to the Ziller Valley Railway, there’s plenty to enjoy.

This secret mountain range spreads across the middle of Little Trains of Germany and is characterised Austria Winter Magic by its thick forests and mining | 5 days from £769 | history. It may not have the Departs January to March and popularity or exposure of December 2017 other mountains in Europe, but it will feel oddly familiar for this is the place that gave rise to some of the most well-known childhood fairytales. Hansel & Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Rumpelstiltskin, Tom Thumb, and many more started out here. Rumour has it that this is also where some of the treasures stolen during the Second World War are hidden.

THE BROCKEN

At 1,142 metres, the Brocken is the highest peak in the Harz. It has featured in art, literature and is the focal point of Walpurgis Night, when witches are said to gather on the mountaintop. Broomsticks aside, the best way to reach the summit is with a ride on the Brocken Steam Railway. This heritage line is frequented by polished trains that climb the mountain under pillars of steam and reveal a magical white landscape to eager passengers. a

WHY THE WORLD has fallen for Emilia Fox

S

ometimes it feels as though the distribution of talent has been, well, just a little over generous to some people. Take Emilia Fox. Since she first took to our television screens she has been a regular sight – renowned for her acting ability and her beauty. She has starred in period dramas – Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth (her major TV debut in 1995) – she’s taken on the highly acclaimed lead role of Dr Nikki Alexander in BBC hit drama Silent Witness, comedy drama in the revival of Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased) with Kent’s very own Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer, and she’s even taken to the wild with born survivor Bear Grylls in one of his celebrity-heavy reality TV survival shows. What’s more she can speak fluent French and German. Oh, and she plays the cello, piano and even the trumpet.

And, now, at 42, she has comfortably taken her place among one of Britain’s most famous thespian acting families. She may even eclipse them. Her father is Edward Fox, star of the classic Day of the Jackal, her mother actress Joanna David, vice president of the Theatrical Guild. Her uncle is the actor James Fox and her cousin the popular Laurence Fox – best known for being the former husband of Billie Piper as he is as side-kick to Kevin Whately in the ITV detective series Lewis. She was always born to be a star, many would argue, but she has certainly earned her place at TV’s top table. But she admits the famous name can have its drawbacks. “It becomes much more of a challenge to be seen in your own right,” the motherof-one explains. “That’s why I always liked going to America, because there were no preconceptions of who you were. People weren’t expecting your mum or dad to a

walk through the door. You were just taken at face value. “I’ve always been brought up to stand on my own two feet and not rely too heavily on everyone else around me. My parents instilled a really good work ethic from when I was little – if you want to have money to spend on holidays, you earn it. “So I’ve always been someone who wanted to be able to survive by myself, but I think you have to let down the barriers a little bit – let other people in.” With recent roles including filming in Kent for the second series of Sky One’s success Anglo-French thriller The Tunnel: Sabotage, her personal life has not been as apparently straight forward as her career. Engaged to Charing Heath’s Vic Reeves back in 2000 after the pair fell for one another during filming for Randall and Hopkirk (Deceased), five years later she was married to Jared Harris, son of actor Robert Harris. But she suffered a miscarriage two years later and by 2009 it ended in divorce. A year later, she was pregnant with the child of her relationship with actor Jeremy Gilley. Little Rose was born later that year, but her relationship with Gilley was over the following year. “Being a mum is quite simply the most important thing in my life and the best and most rewarding thing of my life so far,” she reflects. “Being with Rose makes getting older better and better and better and my priorities are different.

My life now is about family. Work life is important but it’s a secondary thing and that makes me more settled with who I am. I’m much more able to sit down and be at one with myself, but I’d be lying if I said I’d found the perfect balance. It’s always a juggling act, but it’s just that you get better at the juggling.

CELEBRITY STORY

mmm 81

Continued from page 79

From the film The Tunnel 2

“Your twenties are so focused on work and being all around the world, then suddenly your thirties are about working out the home life and now I’m 40 I just love being able to go to work as well and finding that balance. “My life now is about family. Work life is important but it’s a secondary thing and that makes me more settled with who I am. I’m much more able to sit down and be at one with myself, but I’d be lying if I said I’d found the perfect balance. It’s always a juggling act, but it’s just that you get better at the juggling. “Am I a workaholic? I think that’s still there, but having a child puts things in a different order. You choose work in a different way. I’ve been very lucky. I’ve done little bits here and there and had lots of time at home during the last series of Silent Witness. It was much more weighted in the boys’ favour so I got to be at home more.” Silent Witness has ensured her household name status and with the series returning earlier this year, it continues to pack viewing figure clout. “I have loved the crime genre since I was little. I grew up reading Agatha Christie novels and Sherlock Holmes, and

watching Inspector Morse and Cracker. “I still remember the first time I saw the film Seven. So being asked to be part of Silent Witness was a dream come true. When I got the part I watched all the Amanda Burton episodes [she replaced Burton as the main lead] so that I got to know the show, and I loved that it had crime-solving and the science, where you learn something. I consider myself very lucky to be working and doing something I truly enjoy and am interested in. “Silent Witness is a crime-solving show with a difference because it is so focused on solving the crime through the body. That’s interesting because you get to learn about forensic science as well, so you see not just the solving of the crime, but how it is solved and all the medical knowledge, science and technology used in that process. I also think there was an appreciation for the format of the show, which is much rarer now, in that it is more satisfying having the story completed over two consecutive nights.” With both the star and broadcaster so at one with the show, it seems almost inevitable she will return to it soon. Ensuring the Fox name burns brightly. mmm CELEBRITY STORY

WINTER warmth

mmm SELECTS FIVE OPTIONS TO HELP KEEP YOUR HOME WARM AND COSY

FIREPLACES

Fires during the long winter months provide a function beyond the practicality of providing warmth; staring into the flickering flames offers a rare chance to reflect and think. In today’s world, we are used to filling our rooms with noise and distraction. We don’t give ourselves the chance to sit down and quietly reflect; fires provide the right environment to do just that.

Increasingly, people are suffering from seasonal affective disorder (SAD) as the winter months last longer and longer. The dark, cold days can impact heavily on your mood as the days get shorter. Fires are a great way to counteract SAD, make us feel cosy, comfortable and instinctively at peace. A fire, family and good food are enough to turn your home into a haven of comfort and pleasure during winter. Warm and inviting fires can transform a room into a welcoming retreat, to battle the worst of the winter chills and literally light up a room. a FIREPLACE FEATURE

WOOD BURNERS

When it comes to energy efficiency, wood burners can help reduce your energy bills if installed correctly. A wood burner is mainly effective in smaller homes where it can heat up each room a lot faster. You may find heating your home by burning wood will help you get closer to nature, as well as saving those extra pennies each month. You’ll improve your green credentials too, as burning logs from sustainable sources is almost carbon neutral. Remember that an unlined chimney will need lining and that you can use a twin-walled external flue. Bear in mind that you will need space for wood storage.

GAS FIRES

The style of gas fire suitable for installation is determined by chimney design. They are another traditional option for your home, but they can give your home a newer and fresher look. Built in gas fires are designed to fit a variety of fireplace openings, they can be available in a diverse range of styles and sizes. From the breathtaking collection of Studio gas fires to the hearth-mounted Inset gas fires; creating a snug area in your home has never been so rewarding.

RADIATORS

With so many designer radiators on the market today, it can be easy to forget that energy efficiency also matters. Modern radiators are often sleek and aesthetically pleasing, but don’t overlook how energy efficient they are. When choosing radiators for your home, be sure to ask plenty of questions about their efficiency and running costs to make sure that the radiators you choose will give you the most usable heat for your money. Modern radiator designs are much more efficient than their predecessors. Time was - when you were thinking about how effective your heating system would be - you would focus on choosing a boiler with the best specifications. Now, the right radiators are every bit as vital. Choosing good quality radiators that have been designed with performance in mind is an important consideration when looking at your home heating.

UNDERFLOOR HEATING

Underfloor heating can help keep floors and rooms warm and offer a space-saving alternative to radiators. It can sit beneath pretty much any type of floor, including stone, tile, wood and carpet. There are two main types of underfloor heating: electric underfloor heating, which is also known as a dry system, and water underfloor heating, namely a wet system. mmm

WINTER GARDEN preparations

L

SEASONAL TOP TIPS

eaves are falling rapidly, and wind and rain are on the increase. Tender plants (such as bananas) will need protecting from frost, gales and freezing rains. Move plants into the greenhouse, or into a sheltered spot, but if you can’t, it is worth wrapping plants or pots in situ. Remember winter can be a tough time for birds in terms of water and food, so keep supplies well topped up.

TIDY BORDERS

Cut down herbaceous stems and clear the tatty remains of annuals, but do leave a little cover of the perennials that fade relatively elegantly. They will provide winter interest as well as some much needed wildlife shelter - ladybirds especially appreciate winter quarters and will repay your hospitality by disposing of aphids in industrial quantities next year. Leaving sodden debris and fallen leaves around plants will only encourage pests and disease. a

CLEAN OUT THE GREENHOUSE

Clear out the greenhouse, wash pots and trays, clean, mend and oil your tools and throw away anything that is beyond hope or reasonable repair! Cleaning your greenhouse thoroughly will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring. Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners. For really effective pest elimination, fumigation is the ticket. Move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be delightfully pest free!

DRAIN AND LAG

Save yourself untold irritation and expense by draining and lagging standpipes, outdoor taps, irrigation lines and water pumps in advance of sudden hard frosts.

PREPARE SOIL FOR NEXT YEAR

For beds that lie bare in winter, carry on with the winter digging until the soil is too hard - use compost, manure, leaf mould in fact as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier. For text book soil improvement, you should add a layer of organic matter and dig it in by turning over spadefuls so it is buried below the surface. If this seems too much like hard work, just mulch the bed and leave the rest to the worms. If your soil is thin or heavy clay, just fork it over now; too much digging on the former will bring up infertile matter from below whilst great chunks of wet clay will remain rock solid over the winter and become nigh on impossible to break up next year.

PLANTING

Plant bare-rooted trees, shrubs, hedging and roses as well as fruit trees and bushes. Soak the roots in a bucket of water for an hour first and protect against frost and wind if exposed. mmm

SEAT LEON greater design NEW SEAT LEON RECEIVES SUBTLY UPDATED DESIGN WITH GREATER ELEGANCE AND DYNAMISM

S

EAT is continuing its relentless product offensive with the unveiling of the New Leon, ahead of its launch in early 2017. The latest incarnation of the Barcelona-based brand’s best-selling model already has a multi-award-winning recipe , blending key ingredients of comfort, technology and quality, with emotional design and driving pleasure. The successful “Leon formula” is now having a drop of extra technology and design added to the mix. Without a doubt, one of the main reasons for the current Leon’s success has been its striking and high quality design, so, for 2017, some subtle changes have been added. SEAT Design Director, Alejandro Mesonero Romanos, affirmed: “The Leon is a very attractive model and it isn’t necessary to change its image,

only reinforce it, refresh it. The objective is to harmonise all parts of it, in particular the front and the rear, with the sides of the car.” For that reason, the front and rear have sharper, more assertive lines than the current model, with incisive lateral lines that are less distinct at the front and rear. The intention has been to emphasise this sharp image, achieving it with a more coherent look. It is noticeable especially in the new bumper design. Another goal was to increase the perceived size of the car, stretching the grille an extra 40mm in a richer chrome, like that more traditionally found on more expensive, larger cars. The character has also been reinforced as much inside as outside in terms of quality. It is worth noting too, that the new Leon is also even quieter than a MOTORS SECTION

before. Inside the car, the ambient lighting LEDs’ intensity can be regulated as the driver wishes from the newly designed eight-inch screen, which eliminates the need for many of the buttons and dials on the current model. Following the launch of the Ateca with such a vast range of driver assistance systems, it’s now the Leon’s turn to take onboard the latest technological developments. For example, Traffic Jam Assist, a function that offers great comfort in traffic with frequent and intermittent stops. Thanks to the combination of Lane Assist and ACC, in traffic jams the car manoeuvres, accelerates and brakes automatically within the limits of the

system. Up to 37 mph, the system provides assistance with speed while keeping the car in the correct lane. Another added feature is the Pedestrian Protection System which recognises vehicles, as well as pedestrians, ensuring that safety is paramount both in the city and on the motorway. Further new systems include Traffic Sign Recognition, Blind Spot Detection, and the most advanced parking assist technology with both bay and parallel parking, Emergency Assist and High Beam Assist. The camera and navigation systems have been improved too, to now recognise a higher number of traffic signs. The New SEAT Leon also includes a new centre console with an Electric Parking Brake.

mmm 111

The new SEAT Leon will be offered with five trim levels at UK launch: S, SE Dynamic, SE Technology, FR and the new XCELLENCE. The new highlight is the latter with its distinctive upmarket feel, including luxurious upholstery, extensive trim elements and multicolour ambient interior lighting. On the outside, it gleams with a chrome design front grille. The New SEAT Leon’s range of Euro 6 compliant engines satisfies a wide range of needs. The TDI engine range begins with a 1.6 90 PS and goes up to the 2.0 184 PS, plus, it includes a new 1.6 115 PS powertrain. In terms of petrol power, the New Leon’s options range from 110 to 180 PS, with a new 1.0 litre TSI three-cylinder 115 PS for the UK being the latest addition.

As well as this, visitors and patients will be accompanied by a trained individual throughout the duration of their visit, in order to receive the support they often need. The hospital is working to ensure patients with dementia are allocated longer clinic appointments, with the appointment to take place at the start of the clinic, and thus reduce waiting times. Ann Hughes, Clinical Governance Lead for the hospital, said: “We are excited to be working with Dementia Action Alliance, to share resources and networking with other businesses to ensure our hospital is a safe, less threatening environment for those living with dementia or learning difficulties. We also aim to support staff members who are carers for, often elderly, relatives who have dementia.”

The event in Zurich, Switzerland, showcased technology that helps people living with disabilities cope more effectively with daily life. Despite his eventual success, Johnny says the first few hours in Zurich were a nightmare. “There were so many problems after arriving it looked like it was going to be a complete disaster. Luckily, the BerkelBike team persevered, resulting in me smashing my personal best and winning a Silver medal. Thanks for all the great support from everybody; it’s been one heck of a week.” Johnny, 21, was paralysed in a trampolining accident five years ago. His extraordinary commitment to staying fit and active is supported by fundraising through Tree of Hope that helps him pay for pioneering training sessions at Neurokinex, based in Watford.

Kent place names, field names and surnames will be discussed at a conference at Canterbury Christ Church University on Saturday 12th November (2016). Some of today’s Canterbury place names remind us of orchards, fields and meadows that disappeared many years ago. Solly’s Orchard is now a garden at Greyfriars Chapel; miller’s Field, beside the river Stour, is now mostly covered by a car park; Beverley Meadow, St Stephen’s, is now a public park. Chapman’s Meadow, on the Pilgrims’ Way, is still unspoilt but is threatened by a vast 4,000-homes garden suburb, the biggest planning application in the city’s history. It will cover an area of farmland larger than the city centre. in maidstone, Fairmeadow, where the town’s fairs were held, is now a multi-lane highway to the m20. Examples like these will be cited by Dr Paul Cullen, an authority on English place names. Originally from Pluckley and Canterbury, Paul is now a research associate at the University of the West of England in Bristol and is also known as folk-punk musician Paul Carbuncle. LOCAL NEWS

KENT ELECTRICIAN FINDS THE PERFECT FAMILY HOME

NHS REFUSAL To FUND SPECIALIST CARE IS RISKING LIVES AND WASTING MILLIoNS IN SoUTH EAST

October saw the launch of three and four bedroom detached homes at Heron Fields, in Sittingbourne, Kent, a flagship development from Westerhill Homes and Hyde New Homes. Local Kent family man, Adam Phillips, an electrician, has already purchased one of the three-bedroom homes and recently moved in with his wife, young son and new-born baby. Adam Phillips said: “We are so impressed with everything at Heron Fields. Having the chance to live and work in such a superb location and within the perfect home to raise our family - we just had to sign up there and then. We are so lucky to have the playing field close by as well. It will be perfect for my son and I to have a kick-around in when he is a little older.” Set on the fringes of open countryside, Heron Fields is a new development of 2, 3 and 4 bedroom terraced, semi-detached and detached homes with landscaped gardens at Great Easthall. The properties have access to a multitude of recreational pursuits and leisure activities, with large playing fields close by. Kings Cross St Pancras is accessible within an hour direct from Sittingbourne station, just 2.5 miles from Heron Fields. With the first phase of the development nearing completion and over thirty residents already calling it home, Heron Fields is a growing community with a number of well-established schools nearby, such as Murton Infants, alongside Independent and Grammar Schools, with both Borden CoE, Rodmersham Primary School and Estlands School rated Outstanding by Ofsted.

A group of disability campaigners from the South East have criticised local NHS bosses for ignoring calls to invest in specialist care for people with muscular dystrophy. NHS providers have refused to fund a single, vital ‘care advisor’ role in the South East, a decision which is costing the taxpayer £6million a year on avoidable hospital admissions. The lack of coordinated care is only leaving patients vulnerable to severe health complications. Sulaiman Khan, from Woodford Green, East London, has congenital muscular dystrophy, while Andy Robertson, 35, from Canterbury, has limb girdle muscular dystrophy. Both conditions cause severe muscle-wasting and weakening. Care advisors provide practical and emotional support for families affected by muscle-wasting conditions. They also offer advice and information, and educate other local health professionals. Shockingly, there are no care advisors based at the eight specialist neuromuscular centres in London. These centres provide healthcare for around 9,000 people in London, as well as a further 5,000 in the South East area. This compares to four expert care advisors for 6,000 people in the South West, three for 6,000 in Yorkshire and the Humber and three for 5,000 people in the East Midlands. In July, an in-depth report from Muscular Dystrophy UK revealed 40% of hospital admissions could have been prevented had patients had access to better coordinated care.

23% oF PARENTS IN THE SoUTH EAST ARE STRESSED ABoUT HALF-TERM With half-term fast approaching, although the kids might be excited to have some time off, 1 in 5 parents find the break stressful due to the associated costs – both for childcare and keeping the kids entertained. According to the latest research from Equifax, parents pay on average £144 for childcare during half-term and £179 on keeping their children entertained. This brings the average total to £323 for the week - over £60 per day. The holiday appears to be taking its toll on parents in Scotland the most, with 32% saying they are stressed out about the cost, followed by 29% of parents in the South West and 23% in the South East. The cost of keeping the kids entertained also comes at a price and, again, parents in the North East are some of the biggest spenders with 18% having to pay out up to £200. Parents in the North West are also having to dig deep, with nearly a quarter of those living in the region spending up to £150. “The cost of half-term is clearly taking its toll on parents, with an overwhelming 62% saying that the cost of school holidays is increasing year on year,” said Lisa Hardstaff, Equifax credit information expert. “It is only the first half-term of the academic year, yet it is interesting to see just how quickly the costs can add up. In previous research we found that parents had to find an additional £300 to kit their child out at the start of new academic year.”

CHARITY CALLS FOR SCHOOLS IN KENT TO CLOSE GAP FOR DISADVANTAGED PUPILS National education charity, Achievement for All, is calling for schools in Kent to implement its schools programme after an independent review by PwC revealed that disadvantaged pupils from schools supported by the charity are closing the achievement gap with their peers in reading, writing and maths. A review of 25 schools supported by the Achievement for All Achieving Schools programme between 2011 and 2015, indicated that pupils with special educational needs (SEN), those eligible for Pupil Premium funding and low attainers consistently made progress at a higher rate than expected for their year groups. One school reported that it had moved out of the bottom cohort in the country for maths into the top 25 per cent. Achievement for All is focused on raising the aspirations, access and achievement of vulnerable and disadvantaged pupils, including those with special educational needs and disabilities. The charity’s Achieving Schools programme aims to create better life chances for children and young people, and provide a solution to break intergenerational poverty. Achieving Schools is a two-year whole school improvement framework aimed at helping the one in five children who are falling behind at school. The programme is delivered directly into schools by Achievement for All coaches - education specialists who have an extensive background in the sector. PwC’s review shows that the Achieving Schools programme has reached 2,547 schools since the charity began five years ago, with nearly 100,000 children directly benefitting from the programme.

HALCYON DAYS of flight AVIATION HISTORIAN ROBIN J BROOKS REFLECTS ON A PERIOD WHEN BRITAIN REALLY DID RULE THE SKIES AND GRAVESEND FIGURED VERY PROMINENTLY IN THE ACCOLADE.

M

ention the name Gravesend Airport and most memories reflect back to the Battle of Britain when it was a fighter command station. Long before this however, the airfield was home to a company producing racing planes designed to bring glory to an industry that had mainly manufactured fighting aircraft during World War One. The story really begins during that conflict when Australian born Edward Wikner Percival had travelled to Britain and joined the Royal Flying Corps. He was assigned to No. 60 Squadron in France in 1917, where he honed his flying skills before transferring to No. 11 Squadron and seeing service in the Middle East. It was whilst serving in Egypt that he designed and built his first aeroplane based on the Bristol F.2B. With the Armistice Percival was appointed to the Air Ministry as a test pilot but not happy with this, he left to form his own aviation company in partnership with Lieutenant

Commander E B W Leake. In 1932 he set up business in the former British Aircraft Company premises owned by Jimmy Lowe-Wylde in Maidstone (See July 2015 issue) and began to manufacture the first of his designs known as the Gull series. The Percival Aircraft Company, as it became known, soon found that the production of this series of aircraft was too large for the Maidstone premises. It was necessary for Percival to contract work out to George Parnall and Sons of Yate in Gloucestershire. This arrangement lasted for two years until 1934 when an opportunity came to move the company to the new airport at Gravesend. With all the legal requirements completed the setting up of the new factory went swiftly ahead. It was not long before Percival turned his thoughts to the King’s Cup Air Race and just how he could adapt one of the Gull series to win. In a few weeks he designed and built a small, single engine, low wing monoplane of wooden construction. It was powered by a 165hp Napier Javelin 1A engine with the first flights taking place in a

March 1934. Exchanging the Javelin engine for a Gipsy Six engine, Percival entered the aircraft, G-ACND, for the King’s Cup race of July 13th, 1934. Sadly he failed to find a place despite a speed of 191mph and disillusioned, he bought the aircraft back to Gravesend and promptly dismantled it. Undeterred, Percival built the Mew Gull Mark II G-ACND which after its first appearance at the Hendon SBAC show was re-engined with a French 180hp Regnier engine. With this the aircraft was entered in the French Coupe Armand Esders, a race of 1,046 miles. Averaging a speed of 188mph, it won the premier award. Returning to Gravesend the French engine was replaced by the usual Gipsy Six but on subsequent flights, the Gull was flown by Count de Chateaubrun, the Percival representative in France. Unfortunately he acquired the reputation of being the only pilot to bail out of a Mew Gull when he was forced to abandon G-ACND due to a blanket of fog. By now the company was firmly established at Gravesend Airport. Two hangars had been constructed to accommodate the Percival works and with an increasing workforce, production of the Gull series gathered pace. Edgar himself, apart from being around the factory most times, was busy arranging entries to most of the air races of the day. A noted and well respected character, he could always be recognised due to the fact that he chose to fly dressed in a lounge suit topped by a Trilby hat. Consequently he became known to all as ‘the hat’! September 1935 saw Percival enter his third Mew Gull G-AEKL (this was the first production aircraft) in the King’s Cup Race managing a respectable 4th place. Later in the year the Folkestone Trophy Race gave him a 7th place and with two more Mew Gulls coming off the production line, this was encouraging enough for Percival to enter the aircraft in the Schlesinger African Air Race in 1936. The three aircraft chosen were G-ADKL flown by Tom Campbell Black, ZS-AHM for Major A Miller and ZS-AHO for Captain S Halse. Tragedy

was to strike before the race started when Campbell Black was involved in a taxiing accident at Speke Airport and was sadly killed. The other two aircraft were also beset by problems caused by fuel and earth getting up into the Spats or wheel housing. None of this however was to deter Percival from racing his Mew Gulls and over the next year or so there were wins at the Newcastle Race when Charles Gardner reached a speed of 221mph and Alex Henshaw won the Folkestone Trophy Race at a speed of 210mph. In 1937 all three Mew Gulls were entered for the King’s Cup Air Race with wins for two of them. By this time Gravesend and Percival were becoming well known throughout the aviation racing world. This fame also attracted many personalities to fly the Gull range from Gravesend. In 1933 Charles Kingsford Smith flew a Percival Gull Four named ‘Miss Southern Cross’ from England to Australia in the record breaking time of 7 days, 4 hours and 44 minutes. Miss Amy Mollinson (Johnson) left Gravesend on May 4th, 1936 in a Percival Gull Six setting a new world record for a flight to South Africa and back followed by Miss Jean Batten from New Zealand who flew a Percival Gull from England to Australia in October 1936. With his production of the Gull series and the fact that Gravesend Airport was becoming a starting point for breaking records, Edgar Percival began to look around for a less crowded site. He chose Luton Airport in Bedfordshire and with the move completed by 1938 Gravesend was set to become a fighter command airfield for the RAF. Percival went on to design and build the rugged little Proctor aircraft which saw service at many wartime airfields. In 1944 the company was taken over by Hunting Aircraft and although Edgar Percival did form a new company, the halcyon days of flying were long gone. Very little remains of Gravesend Airport today, the site being swallowed up by the Riverside housing estate but the Mew Gull, G-AEXF, is seen at many air displays as part of the Shuttleworth Collection. mmm By ROBIN J BROOKS

Since Movember’s humble beginnings in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia when 30 men grew moustaches, Movember has become a truly global movement, inspiring more than 4 million men and women to participate across 21 countries. The Movember community has raised over $550 million, and has funded more than 800 programmes to date. This work is saving and improving the lives of men affected by prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health problems. Men and women sign up online to grow or support only the moustache. Men start November 1st clean-shaven and grow their moustache for 30 days, getting friends, family and colleagues to donate to their moustache-growing efforts. CHARITY FEATURE

The Movember Foundation’s vision is to have an everlasting impact on the face of men’s health. This is achieved by getting men to grow moustaches during Movember (the month formerly known as November) to spark conversation and raise funds for prostate cancer, testicular cancer and mental health. Together with the Movember community over $550 million has been raised, and has funded more than 800 world-class programmes in 21 countries.

Men (also known as Mo Bros), with their new moustaches, become walking, talking billboards. Similar to a run or walk for charity, they use their hairy ribbon to spark conversations around the often ignored issue of men’s health and seek to raise funds to support the work of the Movember Foundation. Movember’s not just for men. Women who support men’s health, known as Mo Sistas, are an important part of Movember’s success. They get involved in the same way as men, except they don’t need to grow a moustache. They sign up on Movember.com, start a team, recruit the men in their lives to participate, donate, fundraise, plan and participate in events. Most importantly they rally the men in their lives to join the movement, grow moustaches and have important conversations about men’s health. Meaningful strides have been taken toward achieving many goals, but there is more work to be done. Each of the causes they support remains in desperate need of further funding, and continue to be issues that men are often uncomfortable discussing.
