After that fabulous summer, it seems a shock to the system when the cooler, wetter weather makes a return doesn't it? But the autumn months are a glorious time – as our landscapes turn from the green of summer to the array of yellows and oranges as leaves change colour and begin to fall from the trees. Personally, I find it one of the most invigorating times of the year. Certainly the change in seasons was clear at London Fashion Week, when some remarkable outfits were given their first showing, amid the normal array of celebrities. We feature some of them inside this issue. I'm sure I'm not alone either in changes at home; my daughter is leaving the family home to start her university career. If you've been in this situation before you'll know what a mix of powerful emotions it elicits! However, as the nights draw in it does mean one of my favourite times of the year, Halloween, is just around the corner – and inside this issue we bring you some of the most spine-chilling local real life ghost stories. They're not for the faint-hearted! Elsewhere in this issue we have a special focus on two of our favourite stars – first is Chris Evans, who spent several years at the peak of his fame living just outside Maidstone. We take a look at his truly remarkable career. In addition we cast the spotlight on one of the county's most talented musicians – Jools Holland. He too has demonstrated outstanding longevity and is perhaps as famous today as he ever has been. You may also remember that back in August we ran a fabulous competition with our friends at Fremlin Walk in Maidstone – you can see just how the winner got on inside; very many congratulations to her! I hope you enjoy this edition of MMM as much as we did putting it together

Chris Evans
He’s a famous DJ, television personality and king of the breakfast show. We chart the career of this unique character...
A
T the peak of his fame as Radio 1's Breakfast Show presenter, Chris Evans pushed his employers over the edge. As he escaped to his luxury home in Wateringbury, just outside Maidstone, the nation's media in hot pursuit, his ego had perhaps reached the point of no return. Convinced he was bigger than the
BBC station he worked for, he made one demand too many and the exit door beckoned For many, the drama of early 1997 seemed to potentially signal the end of Evans' remarkable rise. But his departure from Radio 1 was no end – merely the closing of another chapter in what has become a truly remarkable career which has seen him become both hugely
influential and fabulously wealthy. Certainly his ego had been allowed to rampage unchecked for too long during his Radio 1 era, but Chris Evans is no fool. Aware of losing the public support he craved, he took a stride backwards and allowed both he and public to have a break from his public persona. It wouldn't last long though. Although he may not be the a

“He formed Ginger Productions and became king of his own castle- and cemented himself as one of the UK’s most successful presenters” young, influential, buck he was back in the 1990s, today he remains in the mainstream – presenting the likes of the popular One Show on BBC One and hosting the Radio 2 Breakfast Show – filling the shoes of the legendary Terry Wogan. In short, he has proved adaptable and reignited his love affair with the British public. No wonder either. His talent was obvious from an early stage. A love of radio and an early embracer of the 'zoo' format – a studio full of copresenters to play off and involve – which was proving a huge hit in the US, he was in the right place at the right time. After rising through the ranks of local radio Chris was beginning to make a name for himself first with gigs behind the microphone at London station GLR and in front of the camera on fledgling satellite network BSB. In 1992 he had his first experience of national radio when he secured a Sunday afternoon slot on Radio 1 for six months.
But his talent was attracting attention, he was lured away from GLR by Virgin. His Saturday morning show seemed destined to launch him into the big time. But Chris Evans is nothing if not unpredictable. And just three months into his Virgin contract he quit when he was approached to host a new show on national TV. It would prove to be just the sort of risk worth taking. The show was Channel 4's Big Breakfast – a newcomer to the morning TV schedules designed to attract a younger audience. Along with Gaby Roslin, Chris Evans was a runaway success as its main presenter. His lively style, ready wit, and ability to know just what the viewer wanted and was
thinking, saw the Big Breakfast win millions of viewers and elevate Chris to a major personality. He fronted the show for two years – eventually quitting to pursue other interests. Again, it was well timed. He formed Ginger Productions and became king of his own castle. His first offering was the hugely popular Don't Forget Your Toothbrush – a show which saw the audience become the stars and cemented

Chris as one of the UK's most successful presenters. Its format proved popular too. And Ginger Productions made a fortune by selling it internationally. It seemed inevitable at the time that he would be lured back to radio, however. The BBC had long been linked with the star, and with a desperate desire to capture a 'cooler' audience, who better than Chris Evans to do the job?
He was unveiled in April 1995 and swiftly set about adding millions to the listener figures – although not without controversy. He knew headlines created a buzz, and used his power and audience to keep the show constantly in the spotlight. But by the end of 1996 the cracks were beginning to show. His nights out were becoming legendary and his demands on employers growing. When he demanded Fridays off to present his new show TFI Friday on
Channel 4 it was the straw which broke the camel's back. After failing to turn up for a show he disappeared – taking refuge at his home in Wateringbury. Crisis talks took place but it was the end of his love affair with Radio 1. Early in 1997 he parted company with the BBC. By November of that year he was back behind the mic – this time on a big money deal at commercial rival Virgin. a
With Joss Stone on BBC Radio 2
Remarkably, a month later he had spearheaded a takeover of the entire radio station – spending £85m to secure it from Richard Branson amid speculation Capital Radio were about to secure it. It underlined just how powerful Chris had become with his financial and business clout. The year 2000, however, was to be a major turning point in the star's life – both professionally and personally. After years of being seen as a lad out drinking with friends that included the likes of fellow DJ Danny Baker and footballer Paul Gascoigne, Chris met someone who would have a profound impact on his life. Billie Piper had been a pop starlet – the latest teenage sensation who enjoyed hits such as Because We Want It. And at the tender age of 17 she
would meet and fall in love with the TV and radio presenter. Famously, after their first date, Chris turned up on her doorstep with a little present. She remembered in her autobiography how he knocked at her door and handed her an envelope: “There were some car keys inside, and a note. “I held up the key. That unmistakable rearing yellow horse dangled from the ring. Parked outside was a silver Ferrari covered in red roses. Inside and out. “I didn't have a clue what to do. What is the etiquette when presented with a racing car? I said: 'Thank you'. “He said: 'You're welcome', and then rode off on his bike. It was the most bizarre morning of my life. The most ridiculous thing of all was, I couldn't even drive.”
While love blossomed, he also sold his Ginger Productions for a staggering £225m. Now he was talented and had the money to invest. Perhaps understandably, his relationship with Billie became all encompassing, while his career took one of its now predictable apparent nose-dives. By the end of 2000, TFI Friday was cancelled, while the following year he was sacked by Virgin for failing to turn up for work. He sued them for unfair dismissal, and lost. After setting up another production company in 2002 – UMTV – a string of failures led him to take a step out of the limelight. What's more, his relationship with Billie Piper was suffering too. After a wedding in Las Vegas in 2001 – Chris's second, having previously married Carol McGiffin – a

the pair separated in 2005, eventually divorcing in 2007. The couple remain close, however. It was 2005 his career was revived in the public eye as he returned to the BBC with a show on Radio 2 and as presenter of the Brit Awards. From taking over the drive time slot, his remarkable rise to the top reached a peak in 2010 when he took over the breakfast show from Terry Wogan. By the end of the year he was presenting The One Show, on Fridays, alongside Alex James. Still with a bit of an edge, he is now a more controlled presenter, aware of the limits expected of such mainstream, prime-time slots. And as his career seems to have finally settled down, his private life has too. Competing with his love of cars – he is the proud owner of one of the most expensive cars in the world after splashing out more than £10m on a 1963 Ferrari 250 GTO in 2010 – is his new family. He married pro-golfer and occasional model, Natasha Shishmanian in 2007 - ex-wife Billie was among those in attendance – and the couple have two sons. Given he is only 47, Chris Evans has perhaps had one of the most remarkable media careers of anyone in the UK. He may have quit his Kent home not long after leaving Radio 1, but his impact on the cultural scene has been remarkable over the last 20 years – and it shows no signs of ending quite yet. mmm

Meet the lucky Sandra Thompson, and now a very spoilt, pampered and styled, mmm competition winner Sandra Thompson was sitting in her local hairdresser reading a copy of Maidstone & Medway Magazine when her eye was drawn to a competition run by Fremlin Walk to win a Style session with a Style Advisor, a pamper session and shopping to the value of £250! Despite never having won a competition before, she thought she might just enter and see what happened. So imagine her delight when Fremlin Walk staff rang to say she had won! Sandra was able to take advantage of this fabulous prize recently and spent an entire day at Fremlin Walk checking out the shops and restaurants before spending time with the Style Advisor Hannah Longworth browsing the stores and picking out a fantastic new season’s capsule wardrobe. Sandra described her day as follows, “I was treated to morning
coffee at Pret a Manger while we got to know one another and so that Lucy from Fremlin Walk could ascertain what I wanted to spend my prize money on, and then on to meet Hannah my personal shopper. While Lucy and I perused the goodies on offer in the shops Hannah was busy looking for items of clothing that met my criteria for ‘a capsule wardrobe’. “Then I had a makeup makeover with Estee Lauder (a favourite of mine) in House of Fraser and then on to lunch in Chimichanga where I ate my fill from the superb menu. Next was my nails where a brilliant transformation from housewife to vamp was performed by Tracy of Nails inc in House of Fraser who pampered me with a superb manicure. “Then back to the shops where I tried on the clothes that Hannah and Lucy had picked for me. I now have a modern, capsule
wardrobe in the new seasons colours which matched the criteria I had asked for, including from stores such as Oasis, H&M and Zara which I had not previously tried. I had an amazing day and will live on this for a long time. Thank you so very much for giving me this opportunity. And I still have a voucher for House of Fraser left to spend!” Lloyd Wright of Fremlin Walk said, “It was a delight to meet and treat Mrs Thompson to a full day’s pampering and shopping, especially as she wanted to update her look so she could show her husband, children and grandchildren that she was still stylish and looked good. We were happy that we were able to do this for her and look forward to hearing how her new wardrobe has been received by the family. Thank you to all the stores which took part in making her day so special.”

The Music Man From musician to television personality, Jools Holland truly is a great pioneer of the music industry. But where did it all start? mmm finds out...

THERE can be few personalities who have demonstrated such a versatility, while maintaining their credibility, as that of Jools Holland. From keyboardist with multi-million selling band Squeeze to fronting perhaps the hippest of all terrestrial TV shows, The Tube, to trying his hand at comedy and even appearing before the Queen. In fact, he's so close to Prince Charles and Camilla he has often been spied at the couple's Highgrove home. What's more, his star shines as brightly today as perhaps it ever has; nearly 40 years after he started out in his career. He continues to perform to sell-out shows around the UK, he fronts radio shows, and his regular BBC TV show Later... is the music programme every performer wants to secure a slot on. He's even managed to secure a senior position within Kent's hierarchy – serving as Deputy Lieutenant of the county and has lent his support to the campaign against a multi-million pound international airport hub being located in the Thames Estuary. No small effort for a man who is still a relatively sprightly 55 and showing no desire to slow down. But then he does have a good reason to see the area remain
untarnished by the inevitable concrete jungle such a development would surely usher in. Since 2006 Jools has owned the manor house within the ruins of Cooling Castle just six miles north of Rochester. It is particularly convenient since the closure of BBC Television Centre which saw the relocation of the Later... show to Maidstone Studios. Preferring to keep his private life just that, it is perhaps fitting he lives behind the tall turrets of the historic site. So what does he make of the remarkably privileged circles in which he now circulates? "I have friends who are in the posh category and some who are in the not-at-all-posh category,” he explains, “and some who you would find it very hard to get any sort of handle on. But I am lucky to have any friends, of course.” Certainly he made plenty of friends by backing the anti-airport campaign. Should any development ever get the go-ahead, it would be inevitable Cooling Castle's calm

surroundings would forever be tarnished. Backing the bid, he said: “If this magical area protected by law and international agreement, is not safe from threat of development, I fear no corner of England is safe." Not that he doesn't occasionally run foul of local authorities. In August, it was revealed he had to apply for retrospective planning permission for a castle-style wall built around his swimming pool at the castle. A spokesman for Medway Council explained: “The works that were carried out were undertaken by the owner on the assumption that planning permission was not required. a
"He was subsequently advised that this was not correct and submitted a planning application." But in terms of controversies, Jools is no stranger. His very first professional recording session was with a group called
Wayne County and the Electric Chairs, and their charmingly titled ditty F*** Off. That was in 1976. Just seven years later, when he found himself co-host of the legendary Channel 4 music show The Tube, he found himself making headlines for all the wrong reasons. Filming a live promotional clip to plug that evening's show, he managed to blurt out the phrase 'groovy f*****s'. The prewatershed slip of the tongue would cost him dear – he was dropped from the show for six weeks and even received a letter from Mary Whitehouse – renowned for her relentless campaign against the slip in standards on TV and radio. “She wrote to me,” he remembers, “saying 'if you do this, standards will
drop'. I wrote back saying 'I absolutely agree with you. It was a slip of the tongue but you've got a point'. And she was quite right.” The Tube was where he gained huge cross-over success, leaping from the world he had previously inhabited – music, to national TV. Having been born in Deptford, in 1974 he was a founding member of the group Squeeze. They enjoyed hits in 1978 with the likes of Take Me I'm Yours, and then huge success with the following year's Cool for Cats and Up the Junction. But Jools – born Julian – wanted to explore more personal avenues and after releasing a host of solo material split from the group in 1982. Ironically, it would be the making of him. He auditioned for a new music TV show for the then-new Channel 4. The Tube. His co-star would be Paula Yates – partner of Boomtown Rats' star Bob Geldof. He remembers his audition: “Paula and I were really appalling. We were supposed to introduce a band we liked and do a fake interview with a student who was there. Paula ended up calling the student work-shy and slapping him. And I pretended to introduce some dead people, and mimed dragging them across the floor of the studio.
“It was a shambles, it wasn’t funny, it was rubbish.” Yet there was something about the shambolic behaviour which appealed to programme makers. Adds Jools: “We thought we were being hired because of our talent and professionalism, whereas in fact it was because we were completely shambolic amateurs.” It was a winning combination. The show was perfectly timed; singles sales were booming, and there was no real alternative to the squeaky clean diet of pop served up in the familiar surroundings of the BBC's Top of the Pops. Among the acts The Tube helped break were Frankie Goes To Hollywood – who with their singles Relax and Two Tribes would prove both, arguably, the most memorable act of the 1980s and the most controversial. After The Tube he even starred in a six-part series with pal Roland Rivron, Groovy Fellers, which saw them on a slightly bizarre tour across the UK with Rivron a Martian and Jools his guide to life on Earth. But despite all his presenting work, Jools never veered far from his love of music – and performing life. It remains his first love. He explains; “When you're young you have got to play what you love and love what you play. And then, when you are grown up, you have
got to play what you mean and mean what you play. “And you should realise you are probably going to make no money and be completely ripped off by people, but that to go on playing might be so enjoyable that it doesn't matter." He tours relentlessly with his Rhythm & Blues Orchestra – frequently featuring star turns from the likes of former Fine Young Cannibals frontman Roland Gift and soul singer Ruby Turner. His shows have frequently featured stints at Rochester's Castle Concerts series. He was also one of the starstudded line-up who performed in the grounds of Buckingham Palace for the Queen's Jubilee. And, of course, his Later... TV show continues to pull in big crowds each week, while attracting some of the biggest names in the industry. While he may spend lots of his time at his south west London home – next to his recording studio – there is no denying he has grown a special bond with Kent. Which ensures an extra boost to the county's rich cultural mix. mmm

ROM learning to ride to studying their behaviour, to taking part in the various sports – either racing or even polo – the majesty of equestrianism is showing no slowing down, despite some tough challenges. It would perhaps be easy to think that the departure of Kent's one and only major racetrack from the calendar was an extensive blow. But while there is no denying that Folkestone's problems – the track has effectively been mothballed while its owners ponder what to do with the site after it failed to deliver the revenues required – have had an impact on the local economy and meant top quality racing is no longer in the county, there is much still on our doorstep. Less than an hour from the county's borders is the splendour of Ascot, while even closer is Surrey's Sandown Park. And Lingfield Park is just a short hop over the border of Kent. Thousands will make the pilgrimage to watch the leading thoroughbreds and jockeys go into battle on the turf and over the fences in pursuit of glory. And with attending the races as much about the social aspects – the fashion, food and networking – it's easy to see why many don't mind making the journey. But the love of horses extends far
beyond the thrills and spills of the racetrack. The desire to control the beasts by learning how to ride them remains a huge temptation for young and old alike. All of which continues to fuel riding schools across the county. Among them is the Coldblow Equestrian Training Centre in Thurnham, near Maidstone. Clara Pilkington, joint proprietor, explains: “There have of course been horses at Coldblow Farm for many hundreds of years. “We, the Pilkington family, purchased the farm in late 1998. The farm was somewhat derelict having been run as an intensive poultry meat production unit and heavy goods vehicle premises in the 1990s. “Initially we kept our own horses on the farm and gradually built up a small livery business. The main farm business is now self-catering holiday accommodation. “We established Coldblow Equestrian as a licensed riding centre in September 2007 and it has built up over the past three years. Our primary business is to offer career training but we do cater and welcome the leisure rider. “Our young riders are so keen they have recently persuaded us to start up an After School Club as well as their Saturday lessons. “Every school holiday we have to a

organise sleepover camps too. “As soon as we judge our students and clients to be ready we encourage them to hack out and also take part in competitions such as dressage and show jumping at a nearby competition centre.” In Rochester is the Knightsplace Farm Equestrian Centre. It provides riding lessons, training and activities for all abilities. A spokesman explained: “We are committed to introducing as many people we can to the joys of riding, whether it is just for fun, fitness or competition. “Our facilities cater for juniors and adults, staffed by a professional team dedicated to teaching of a high standard.” Of course, buying your own horse
is not a particularly cheap option. From both the initial cost of buying to ensuring you have sufficient land or stabling – or indeed can afford to pay elsewhere for the treatment of your animal. Many stables, therefore, will allow you to develop strong relationships with animals in their care or even have a joint ownership plan in place. Then, of course, there is a more educational approach to handling horses. Hadlow College, near Tonbridge, has established itself as the county's powerhouse in developing land management skills. It now offers a host of full and parttime equine courses. A spokesman explains: “By studying a equine course at Hadlow
College, you can become part of an industry which, with approximately 900,000 horses and two million riders in the UK, constantly needs well trained and devoted individuals to give expert care and tuition. “Our equine courses take full advantage of the facilities we have. These include stabling for over 60 horses, cross-country routes and an international sized arena. “You will learn how to correctly care for horses, examine horse behaviour and develop your riding ability. “We also offer a degree in equine management in partnership with the University of Greenwich. This degree provide a number of skills which give options for future careers, either in the equine industry a

or self-employed running their own business. “They represent an ideal progression route for people interested in equine-related jobs or working with horses directly.” Or maybe polo is more your thing? Kent, perhaps surprisingly, doesn't have many opportunities to play the sport. Yet, just over the border, is Sussex Polo – which features members from across the county, including Maidstone and Medway. A spokesman explains: “The club was formed in 2002 by Duane and Sallie Anne Lent after a family holiday to a polo ranch in Argentina inspired them to try and recreate the more informal and relaxed atmosphere they found there combined with the competitive farm polo that Argentina is so famous for. “They wanted to encourage and build a new style of polo community that is more inclusive in a sport that has historically been perceived as exclusive to the large majority. Thus the club’s motto: ‘More new blood, less blue blood!’ The club welcomes new members at any point throughout the season and is perceived as the true home of low goal polo in the south east guiding and inspiring both new and novice players in their polo adventure.” Whatever form your interest in horses, the opportunities are perhaps more varied today – and designed to suit every pocket – than ever before. mmm

Eggplant Rollatini
Method: Heat a little olive oil in a heavy saucepan. Add the garlic and saute gently for one minute. Add the tomato paste and cook for one minute. Add the rice and cook for about a minute more. Start adding the warm broth and stir the risotto. Every time the rice absorbs the liquid, add a couple more ladles. Keep stirring for about 25 to 30 minutes. Take the risotto off the heat and add the cheese. Transfer to a bowl and let cool before assembling rollatini. Slice the very ends off the eggplant. Slice the
eggplant into 1/4 inch slices. You should have 5 slices for a large eggplant. Salt the slices heavily and place in a colander for about one hour. Rinse the salt off the eggplant and press with paper towels to dry. Heat a grill or grill pan on the stove. Make sure it's hot before beginning. Brush the eggplant slices on both sides with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill
on both sides until you have nice grill marks and the eggplant is pliable. Place a little marinara sauce in the bottom of a small baking dish. Place some risotto all along the eggplant slices and roll up and place seam side
Ingredients: For the Risotto: 1 clove garlic, minced 1 tablespoon tomato paste 1 cup arborio or carnaroli rice 4 cups light beef broth (or vegetable broth), heated 1/3 cup grated parmesan For the eggplant: 1 large eggplant olive oil marinara sauce
down in baking dish. Top with marinara sauce. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes covered. Remove cover and bake an additional 10 minutes. Serve with grated parmesan cheese.

Whether you are travelling on Business or Leisure, here are some useful tips for you to consider… • Make sure your passport has at least six months' validity from your planned date of return to the UK. Carry extra passport photos in case your passport is lost or stolen and you need to replace it while you're away. • Roll your clothes when packing. No creases and more clothes fit into your suitcase. •When printing or receiving travel documents, itineraries, confirmation emails, and maps, move them immediately into a coloured, transparent envelope. It’s easy to grab on your way out the door to the airport, and easy to find in your bag. The envelope also becomes a handy place to store receipts. • Bring a travel adapter with you. Most of the time a hotel has travel adapters you can use, but bring one with you to be sure. • Make a travel check list. Then you’re sure that you don't forget something. Don't want to make one of your own? You can find general travel check list on the internet or you can download a travel check list app for your mobile or tablet.

S we start to say goodbye to what has been a record making summer with high temperatures, and say hello to the inevitable winter, with the shortening of days and the colder temperatures, skiers and snowboarders amongst us start the day dreaming of winter vacations, slopes laden with snow and the first chairlift to ensure fresh tracks that we all long for. When it comes to a great winter ski vacation most of us require; great accommodation, good food, an extensive ski area for all abilities, good après ski activities including bars, and for those night owls amongst us a selection of good clubs to see us in to the early hours. The resort of Sestriere in Italy has all this and more. Sestriere is one of Italy’s premier ski resorts, hosts of the 2006 Winter Olympics and located in the massive Milky Way ski area. This
Away To Sestriere high altitude resort is great even in the later Easter holidays, due to its higher altitude based ski runs and town centre location. With a vast terrain of excellent skiing available on your door step, plus slope side ski storage, you won’t find a better option for stress free skiing and boarding Sestriere started it’s ski history back in the 1930’s when Giovanni Agnelli (founder and owner of Fiat motor cars) developed the town for the specific use as a ski resort for his workers of the Fiat factory in Turin. This resort is located in western Italy, half way along the border separating Italy and France in the Piedmonte region about 100km west of Turin, 3 hours drive west of Milan and 3 hours drive south of Geneva in Switzerland. The town of Sestriere, set at an altitude of 2,136 feet is located just over 1 and a half hours transfer by coach from Turin airport and a
short two hour flight from Gatwick, so you’re in resort before you know it. With excellent ski and board hire available at great rates, with equipment that is of excellent standard and last year’s models at worst, you don’t need to worry about lugging all your kit abroad if you’re looking for the perfect stress free and easy ski break. The town has a variety of great evening and day time activities for those ski free days or evenings looking for some après fun. Whilst Sestriere sits on a sunny plateau with north-west-facing slopes, it also enjoys guaranteed snow cover thanks to both the altitude and one of the world's most extensive snow making operations. Fishing in Kent
Take a weekend fishing trip this autumn, as Kent has some great angling opportunities to have a great catch! S an island nation, it is perhaps inevitable that we remain firmly attached to our most primal huntergatherer urges when it comes to what lurks within the waters which surround us. Kent, bordered on three sides by water, is perhaps more prone than most areas to become obsessed with casting off and catching some of the magnificent variety of fish which swim around us. And with river, reservoir and sea fishing opportunities all around, it is hard to escape what remains the UK's best-loved sporting past-time. Recent statistics suggest one in five people in the UK (20%) have gone freshwater fishing over the last decade and that figure shows no signs of slowing. Lured by the prospect of absorbing the natural beauty of our surroundings and the calming prospect of a day spent quietly contemplating beside the river bank, even the economy's woes can do nothing to dent it. Certainly Kent is blessed with some of the finest fishing opportunities – especially when it comes to sea fishing. Few would argue, for example, that the waters around Dungeness are rich in a range of species – and can make an ideal destination to catch something for the table as well as simply for fun. A spokesman for Sea Angler magazine explains what can be caught there: “Bass are caught in the summer and autumn. There are also pouting, mackerel, scad,
A
eels, dogfish and soles in summer. “From October onwards the whiting, pouting, dabs, dogfish and flounders arrive in bigger numbers. There is always a chance of cod because of the venue's proximity to deep water. “Gutted black lug is the best bait, with a whole squid or a small live whiting the alternatives for big bass or cod.” Many opt for the coast along the north Kent shore – from Whitstable, through Herne Bay and onto Thanet, where sea anglers are a regular sight. And there's just as many working their way down the coast with popular spots along Deal, Walmer and then through Dover, Folkestone and Hythe. The only problem for the budding sea angler may be where to cast off. But never fear, the internet is full of anglers keen to spread the word and share their favourite spots with others in the fishing community. In fact checking online is the best place to net the latest updates on where the best fish can be found at different times of the year. Of course, if sea fishing isn't for you, then there are plenty of other options. There are many fisheries keen to welcome you. Hawkhurst Fish farm is just one of many. A spokesman explains: “With four main angling lakes, it is the perfect location for the big fish hunter, match angler and the pleasure angler alike. “There are huge carp in three of the lakes

and plenty of them for the specimen hunter. “On the other hand, the match angler has a long narrow lake ideal for pole fishing and full of average sized carp with the odd tench and golden orfe to fill most keep nets. “We also have three junior course ponds suitable for both children and adults of all abilities, with tackle available to hire.” Those who venture to Bewl Water have also been kept busy in recent years. A spokesman explains: “Over the last two years Bewl Water has provided the best sport ever in its 35 year history with rod averages consistently hitting record highs. “Top quality fish have come to the net every week including superb homereared hard fighting blue trout for which Bewl has become renowned. “With water level remaining high we are looking forward to a great autumn of trout fishing.” Bewl Water remains one of the county's most popular trout fisheries, with the opportunity of hiring boats and a wide variety of permits available. Across its 770-acres it operates 54 boats and bank fishing is available on more than half of the lake's 17-mile shoreline. The spokesman adds: “Bewl Water's beautiful Wealden surroundings and intricate shape appeal both to those who like the intimacy of secluded and sheltered bays, and to those who appreciate the huge expanses and panoramic views experienced only on the larger stillwater fisheries.” With such competition to attract anglers, there has never been a better time to take up the sport and join the many thousands across the county who already partake in the past-time. What's more, the specialist angling shops – normally staffed by enthusiastic anglers – are ideal places to get all the advice you need, whether you are a complete beginner to a more experienced fisherman. In fact, Kent could not ask for a better array of opportunities, across all varieties of fishing. mmm

Jacksons Fencing news, topical treats and more... mmm 57
I remember that in my September page I was hoping that we would all be enjoying an extended or Indian summer, with glorious weather throughout the early autumn and beyond…
I think we’ve actually done very well. After what can only be described as an abysmal and very late spring, we’ve had a super summer, one of the best I can remember for a good few years. I don’t want to seem greedy, but I really wouldn’t mind just a little bit more golden sun through October, this would at least help to soften the blow of the
coming of the long, dark nights! With winter and icy mornings in mind, can you imagine not ever having to scrape your windscreen again? It’s a foreign concept to those of us who don’t keep our car in a garage, but it’s one of the benefits of a new product that Jacksons have just launched – the Car Port. Based on a heavy-duty version of our pergola system we have designed a single and double configuration with polycarbonate sheeting for the roof. So if you have the space you could enjoy not having to scrape your windows again, plus it protects your car from harsh sun and the worst of the winter elements, for a fraction of
the cost of building a garage. For more info visit your local page www.jacksons-fencing. co.uk/ashfordlocal Something else you can find on the local page are the results of the photo competition that we have been running over the last few months. We invited you to send in photos of your Jacksons products with your family or pets etc. I must say I’ve
thoroughly enjoyed receiving the emails, not just the pictures, but the really interesting and lovely comments that accompanied them, including some of the whackier titles! You can find a link to the page with the winning photos and visit the gallery online to see the entries, there are some wonderful images there. Thanks to everyone who sent photos in.

Audi A3 Convertible
Sleek new compact class soft-top adds easily accessible wind-in-hair driving pleasure to all-new A3’s long list of attributes
mmm 69
The soft top The new A3 Cabriolet has a soft fabric roof that is stretched over a lightweight kinematic mechanism made of magnesium-steel, and it complements the car's design perfectly. At the press of a button, the top opens or closes electrohydraulically in less than 18 seconds at speeds of up to 31mph. When retracted, the top – folded into three layers – rests in a tray that barely affects luggage capacity, which is 287 litres (10.14 cubic ft). The acoustic soft top has a glass rear window and is available in black, grey and brown - its roof liner can be specified in black or lunar silver. The fully automatic acoustic hood has a thicker inner foam layer which further reduces the already low interior noise level of the A3 Cabriolet. A wind deflector and head-level heating for the front seats will be available from the options list. An active rollover protection system consisting of two spring-loaded plates that are recessed into the body protects the occupants in case of a rollover accident.
Body The new Audi A3 Cabriolet is around 50 kilograms lighter than the previous model, despite its larger size and improved comfort – the kerb weight of the entry-level version is just 1,365 kilograms. Even taking into account its special reinforcements, which deliver high torsional rigidity, the body-in-white with its aluminium bonnet weighs 30 kilograms less than previously. Weight was also significantly reduced in the interior and in the engine, contributing to best-in-class figures which bear testament to the Vorsprung durch Technik brand’s intensity of focus on lightweight construction principles. Interior Elegant lines, clean surfaces and typically uncompromising quality also mark out the interior design of the new Audi A3 Cabriolet. The instrument panel is lean and low, with a gently curved frontal section and a centre console angled slightly towards the driver. The large, round
air vents with their ‘jet design’, the electrically retractable 5.8-inch colour monitor complemented by the Driver’s Information System with efficiency and rest recommendation assistants, the control panel for the air conditioning system and the three-dimensional trim strips help to maximise the air of premium class sophistication. So, too, do features such as the optional lighting package which for the first time includes a touch-sensitive switch for the reading lights. The cabin offers enough space for four adults, and the seatbacks of the two rear seats can be folded down to create a wide through-load area. The steering wheel and seats are new designs, and the new electromechanical parking brake is operated by a button on the centre console. Depending on which of the three trim levels – SE, Sport and S line – is chosen by UK customers, the seats are finished in either cloth or a combination of cloth and leather, with full leather and an Alcantara/leather mix available on the options list.

4G with Three
The Three network joins the superfast mobile internet service IF YOU need a super fast connection on the move to do business, your 4G options have taken a big boost. This month sees the Three network join the race for customers trading up to the service which is some five times faster than the conventional 3G service. And that means speeds the equivalent of many home connections. EE (Everything Everywhere) had a head start in the market to secure a primary 4G market share, and it was joined at the end of August by O2 and Vodafone. EE has already expanded its network to cover both Maidstone and
Medway, in addition to Kent towns Ashford, Sevenoaks, Tonbridge and Tunbridge Wells. Rikki Lear, regional manager for Kent and Sussex at EE, said: “The expansion of 4G mobile broadband services is great news for customers in the county. “Residents and businesses can do more on the move around the region, sharing content, streaming from the web and working online, no matter where they are.”

Gold Winning Travel
A south-east Javelin train is named after Olympic rower HIGH speed rail firm Southeastern has named one of it’s Javelin trains after gold-medal winning London 2012 rower Katherine Grainger. She is the latest star from last summer's Games to receive the accolade. She met staff at London's St Pancras International station recently to officially unveil the engine, which will run the high-speed route across Kent. Dr Grainger's gold medal was one of the most emotional – after winning back-to-back silver medals in the 2000, 2004 and 2008 Games, this was seen as her last chance to succeed. Speaking at the unveiling, Dr Grainger said: "It's crazy! I love it! It's all so surreal. I can't wait to take my mum for a trip on my train. Thank you to Southeastern, this is a huge honour." Southeastern's engineering director, Wayne Jenner said: "Southeastern's high speed service played an important part in the success of the London 2012 Games, and to honour this we've named the fleet of trains after some of Britain's greatest-ever Olympians. We took the train naming to an employee vote, and Katherine was a clear choice. "Her accomplishments - representing Great Britain in four consecutive Olympic Games and countless World Championships are nothing short of inspirational. We're only too pleased to permanently honour her on the side of a Javelin train.”

BUSINESS Improvements to Newham Court Shopping Village
A unique complex is being designed, all around a brand new Waitrose supermarket NEWNHAM Court Shopping Village is set for a multi-million pound overhaul after plans were unveiled to transform it into a major retail hub. The complex, close to junction seven of the M20, is currently dominated by Notcutts and a host of small retail units,
in addition to a pub and restaurant. But in the new ambitious project outlined recently, it would be transformed into a shopping park focused on food, fashion and gardening. And at its very heart would be a Waitrose supermarket.
Commercial property developers Land Securities, who are behind the scheme, says bringing in Waitrose will create some 180 jobs. In addition, discussions are at an “advanced” stage with a leading department store about taking a unit within the new scheme. Notcutts will remain part of the mix – being moved to a new garden centre within the development. Land Securities are bringing forward the plans for the site, first opened in 1983, as it is “now in need of regeneration”. A two-day public consultation took place in September, prior to the submission of a planning application to Maidstone Borough Council. Chris Ward of Land Securities said: “We are delighted to be working on this exciting regeneration proposal and thrilled to have already secured such a quality tenant as Waitrose. “We are confident that our proposals represent a fantastic opportunity to enhance the shopping experience that Maidstone can offer both residents and visitor as well as making a significant investment and major job creation in the local area.”

This is Halloween! mmm 77
It’s the spookiest time of the year, and when living in a county with such a rich and gruesome history as ours- there are always great tales to sink your teeth into. So join us as we indulge in a few of our favourites...
I
F YOU'RE looking for something to go bump in the night this Halloween, you need look no further than within the borders of this very county. From ghostly activity in some of Kent's oldest buildings, to spooky tales of ghostly women walking in front of cars and terrifying stories of a winged beast, there's plenty to send shivers down your spine. You can put that scary film you were about to watch back in the box and settle down to some of the most frightening stories we at mmm could find. Don't have nightmares now...
The Ghost of Blue Bell Hill Of all the stories which haunt the county, perhaps this is one of the most infamous. The tale has slight variations, but all will make you think twice about driving along the main road which links Maidstone and Medway; Blue Bell Hill. The common thread to all stories is of motorists being shocked when a young woman suddenly appears
from nowhere and walks straight into the path of their car. Convinced they have struck a pedestrian, the frantic motorist leaps out of the car only to find no trace of any woman and no damage to their car. In 1969 a Rochester motorist claimed to have seen two women step in front of a car only for the vehicle to pass straight through them. Five years later, in perhaps the most famous incident, Maurice Goodenough had his tale reported by the News of the World when he had what he described as the most “terrifying moment of my life”. a
“Walking home after a night out three teenagers reported seeing a man-like figure with wings appear in the undergrowth”
He struck a young girl who walked in front of him as he drove along the road. He jumped out to find her laying injured in the road. He covered her body with his coat and attempted, in vain, to flag down passing cars. Frightened to move her, he drove to the nearest police station and reported what had happened. When crews reached the scene, however,
they found nothing but the coat. There was no sign of blood, no damage to the car. Despite nationwide appeals, no-one ever came forward to shed light on the mystery. It was put down to being another appearance by the Blue Bell Hill ghost. And in 1992, bus driver Ian Sharpe, 54, reported how a woman stared straight into his eyes before walking into the path of his car. Convinced he had hit her, he got out and searched under the car and on the verge, only to find nothing. Only when he reported the incident to the police, and a search found nothing, did it become apparent it was another sighting of the Blue Bell Hill ghost. But where did it all spring from? The popular theory is it relates to a
1965 car crash in which three women died. One, it is claimed, was on the eve of her wedding. It is her distressed ghost which haunts one of the county's busiest roads for ever more.
The Hythe Mothman Dating back to 1966, the Mothman is a legend born in West Virginia in the US where a number of sightings were made in Point Pleasant. Sightings continued until 46 people were killed when the local Silver Bridge collapsed, allowing a legend to spring up that the two incidents were related. More recently a movie was made – the chilling Mothman Prophecies – based on a book which in turn was based on the apparently true story. Yet three years earlier, in November 1963, there is a recorded sighting of the so-called Mothman – a man with ten-foot wings and red, a
glowing eyes – rather closer to home, in Hythe. Walking home after a night out three teenagers reported seeing a man-like figure with wings appear in undergrowth, while five days later someone else spotted a strange flying creature, and tracks were found nearby. It remains unexplained to this day.
Dover Castle The historic monument has stood overlooking the Channel for centuries; protecting our shores for many years. Little wonder, then, that its walls are said to be teeming with unexplained phenomena. There are tales of a sobbing woman in a red dress and the bizarre sightings of the lower half of a man's body. Perhaps most spine-tingling is the tale of the headless drummer – said to be a youngster who was ambushed and his head cut off.
Pluckley It is impossible to discuss Kent's history of ghosts without mention of Pluckley – long since dubbed the
most haunted village in Britain. There are so many tales of bizarre goings-on that police are forced to step up patrols and frequently issue warnings to ensure crowds of ghosthunters don't all descend on the village for Halloween. There's the Red Lady who is said to rise from her grave outside the church of St Nicholas, and the White Lady – a relative who also comes back to the land of the living. Derring Woods has acquired the nickname the Screaming Woods after claims that at night you can still
hear the wails of those who have got lost over the years and died. In addition there are said to be the ghost of a colonel who committee suicide, a highway man who once prowled the area and even a horse and carriage. In short, the place is awash with ghosts and ghouls. Of course, ultimately it comes down to just what you believe in. It can't, after all, simply be a useful way of keeping visitors flooding into the little village during the quieter autumnal months... could it? mmm
