elcome to the October edition of mmm magazine – your indispensable guide to autumn in this great and inspiring county of ours.

We were rather blessed, in the end, with the summer weren’t we? It may have taken a long time to arrive, but to still be enjoying sizzling temperatures in September made it all worthwhile.But now, with the nights drawing in, our focus switches from heat and sunshine to the glorious onset of a season which is vibrant in colour as nature readjusts in preparation for the winter ahead.

There’s also that delicious thrill of the temperatures dropping and our homes becoming cosy and more welcoming than ever before. Not to mention log fires in cosy inns and restaurants for perfect days and nights out.

But here’s one way to warm yourself up this year – simply flick through the pages of this month’s magazine. It’s packed with all the latest fashion and features you have come to expect.

This month we focus on Joan Collins, a star of distinction and a timeless classic. She remains supremely glamorous and continues to be such an inspirational character.

Inside we feature the work of David Jason – surely one of the most loved of all British actors. Who could ever forget his memorable role as Pop Larkin, enjoying what seemed like an endless summer right here in Kent? Little wonder Pluckley still remains a popular tourist draw as people continue to flock to experience the real life world of the Darling Buds of May. But surely the role we all remember him by is as Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter. A man always on the look out for a few bob and creating some of the most memorable moments in television for generations.

The cast’s trip to Margate for a Christmas special continues to hold a very special place in the heart of its millions of fans.

Somewhere Del would have loved to have been was Salon Privé, held at Oxford’s majestic Blenheim Palace which I attended recently. Packed full of glitz and glamour, it pulled in crowds attracted to the opportunity to see up close some of the most amazing luxury and exclusive motor vehicles. It really was a fabulous day out. Or ‘lovely jubbly’ as Del would have said.

With Halloween lurking at the end of the month, we promise you plenty of treats with no threat of a trick inside this month’s edition of mmm. And, as ever, we’d love to hear from you with your views and opinions.

hen it comes to stars with staying power, then it’s hard to look much further than Joan Collins – a woman who first took to the stage in the 1940s and continues to this day.

Now 83, she is relishing her role as the elder stateswoman of the entertainment industry – taking cameos in such movies as the big screen outing of comedy’s Absolutely Fabulous – and on October 5th rounded off a UK tour of theatres discussing her life and times in front of a sell-out audience at Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre.

career was synonymous with sexy roles which showed off her natural assets, and, in truth, it has never really left her. Find another octogenarian with such style and you’ll be doing well.

Now a dame, having been knighted in 2014, she remains a svelte size 10 and remains determined to keep looking her best.

“I watch my weight because I’m quite bosomy so if I don’t, I just look like a lump,” she admits, “I don’t count calories and I eat healthily, but I eat dairy. I don’t believe in all this no fat thing.

“I have always worn sun protection, and have kept my face away from harmful rays since I was 20.

‘You should see me when I wake up in the morning; my face is so white, it’s like a sheet.

‘I’m a chocoholic – but I believe that moderation is the key.

“And I will never define by style by my age – I’ll wear a leather skirt, even a bikini, if I want to. Clothes are my passion and I adore them.”

And that approach has meant she continues to defy age and look almost permanently as the world remembers her the most – as the devious Alexis Carrington Colby in US soap sensation Dynasty; an

extravagant show which, along with Dallas, dominated the world’s screens during the excessive 1980s.

Not that clothes have always played the biggest part in some of her most notorious roles, such as the 1970s hit The Stud and The Bitch – both films based on books by her late best-selling novelist sister, Jackie Collins.

Jackie, who sold more than 500 million copies of her books, died in 2015 after a seven-year battle with breast cancer which she had kept hidden from the public. 

Explains Joan: “I still have not processed it totally and I think that grief, great grief, is something that takes a while to process. You never get over it, you just learn to live with it.

“People loved her and there was a tremendous outpouring of grief from the public after she died.”

For Joan, her career started young.

Born in London in 1933, she grew up during the war years and made her theatrical debut at the tender age of nine when she secured a role in A Doll’s House and went on to learn her craft at the acclaimed Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Her parents certainly influenced her career.

Her mother was a dance teacher and nightclub hostess, while her father was an agent to the stars, working with the likes of The Beatles, Tom Jones and Shirley Bassey.

By the time she was 17 she inked a deal with the Rank film studio and in 1951 appeared in Lady Godiva Rides Again – a movie most notable today for both her debut and an early role for the legendary Diana Dors.

She appeared in a string of movies, including the final ‘Road’ movie of the classic double act of Bob Hope and Bing Crosby, Road to Hong Kong in 1962.

And she admits she’s seen a lot of changes in the world since those early days.

She says: “The world was a pretty good place for my generation in the sixties, seventies and eighties, even into the mid-nineties.

“Then there was 9/11 and it’s all gone to rack and ruin. I worry for my grandchildren.”

But it was the role in Dynasty which she secured in 1981 which would make her a household name around the world.

And it was a character she says she based on a certain US presidential candidate, explaining: “I based Alexis on Donald Trump - Alexis is very tough in business.

“I met Donald around that time.

And she’s tipping her old pal for victory, adding: “We need a really strong leader of the free world, who’s going to crack down on terrorism - however that’s done.

“I have certain ideas but I’m not going to talk about them because they’d be politically incorrect.”

Certainly her life has rarely been dull – with her love life making the headlines as much as her movie roles.

Married five times, she has three children and three grandchildren.

She has been married to Percy Gibson since 2002.

One of her headline grabbing romances was with Bill ‘Bungalow’ Wiggins, however they never made it up the aisle, he was a property developer who now lives with his wife in a farmhouse near Leeds Castle.

At 83 she shows no signs of slowing down or, quite honestly, acting her age. And quite frankly, would we want her too? mmm

HALLOWEEN TALES OF

supernatural phenomena

I

f you’re looking for something to go bump in the night this Halloween, you need look no further than within the borders of this very county.

From ghostly activity at some of Kent’s oldest buildings, to spooky tales of ghostly women walking in front of cars and terrifying stories of a winged beast, there’s plenty to send a shiver down your spine.

You can put that scary film you were about to watch back in the box and settle down to some of the most frightening stories we at MMM could find. Don’t have nightmares now...

THE GHOST OF BLUE BELL HILL

Of all the stories which haunt the county, perhaps this is one of the most infamous.

The tale has slight variations, but all will make you think twice about driving along the main road which links Maidstone and Medway; Blue Bell Hill.

The common thread to all stories is of motorists being shocked when a young woman suddenly appears from nowhere and walks straight into the path of their car.

Convinced they have struck a pedestrian, the frantic motorist leaps out of the car only to find no trace of any woman and no damage to their car.

In 1969 a Rochester motorist claimed to have seen two women step in front of a car, only for the vehicle to pass straight through them.

Five years later, in perhaps the most famous incident, Maurice Goodenough had his tale reported by the News of the World when he had, what he described as the most “terrifying moment of my life�.

He struck a young girl who walked in front of him as he drove along the road. He jumped out to find her laying injured in the road. He covered her body with his coat and attempted, in vain, to flag down passing cars.

Frightened to move her, he drove to the nearest police station and reported what had happened. When crews reached the scene, however, they found nothing but the coat.

There was no sign of blood, no damage to the car. Despite nationwide appeals, no-one ever came forward to shed light on the mystery. It was put down to being another appearance by the Blue Bell Hill ghost.

And in 1992 bus driver Ian Sharpe, 54, reported how a woman stared straight into his eyes before walking into the path of his car.

Convinced he had hit her, he got out and searched under the car and on the verge, only to find nothing.

Only when he reported the incident to the police, and a search found nothing, did it become apparent it was another sighting of the Blue Bell Hill ghost.

But where did it all spring from?

The popular theory is it relates to a 1965 car crash in which three women died. One, it is claimed, was on the eve of her wedding. It is her distressed ghost which haunts one of the county’s busiest roads for ever more. a

THE HYTHE MOTHMAN

Dating back to 1966, the Mothman is a legend born in West Virginia in the US where a number of sightings were made in Point Pleasant.

Sightings continued until 46 people were killed when the local Silver Bridge collapsed, allowing a legend to spring up that the two incidents were related.

More recently a movie was made – the chilling Mothman Prophecies – based on a book which in turn was based on the apparently true story.

Yet three years earlier, in November 1963, there is a recorded sighting of the so-called Mothman – a man with ten-foot wings and red, glowing eyes – rather closer to home, in Hythe.

Walking home after a night out three teenagers reported seeing a man-like figure with wings appear in undergrowth, while five days later someone else spotted a strange flying creature, and tracks were found nearby.

It remains unexplained to this day.

DOVER CASTLE

The historic monument has stood overlooking the Channel for centuries; protecting our shores for centuries.

Little wonder, then, that its walls are said to be teeming with unexplained phenomena.

There are tales of a sobbing woman in a red dress, the bizarre sightings of the lower half of a man’s body.

Perhaps most spine-tingling is the tale of the headless drummer – said to be a youngster who was ambushed and his head cut off.

HALLOWEEN FEATURE

PLUCKLEY

It is impossible to discuss Kent’s history of ghosts without mention of Pluckley – long since dubbed the most haunted village in Britain.

There are so many tales of bizarre goings-on that police are forced to step up patrols and frequently issue warnings to ensure crowds of ghost-hunters don’t all descend on the village for Halloween.

There’s the Red Lady who is said to rise from her grave outside the church of St Nicholas, and the White Lady – a relative who also comes back to the land of the living.

Derring Woods has acquired the nickname the Screaming Woods after claims that at night you can still hear the wails of those who have got lost over the years and died.

In addition there are said to be the ghost of a colonel who committed suicide, a highway man who once prowled the area and even a horse and carriage.

In short, the place is awash with ghosts and ghouls.

Of course, ultimately it comes down to just what you believe in. It can’t, after all, simply be a useful way of keeping visitors flooding into the little village during the quieter autumnal months could it? mmm

HALLOWEEN IN KENT

Halloween at Kent Life, Maidstone 22nd - 31st October

Little monsters are guaranteed plenty of ghostly goings-on this half-term at the Kent Life Heritage Farm’s Halloween Spooktacular, from October 22nd to 31st.

The award-winning attraction, near Maidstone, invites you to brave the snakes, spiders and scorpions in Creepy Cuddle Corner, take a terrifying tractor ride and search for friendly ghouls on the wooden hunt.

For something a little less chilling, test your artistic skills with daily pumpkin carving and craft activities and find out who’s the ghoulish of them all in the daily fancy dress competition. Kent Life is also a fun and safe place to go trick or treating, so come and knock on the doors of its frightening farmhouses and historic homes and find out who’s lurking behind them! On October 28th and 29th, there’s after-dark fun from 5.30 to 8pm with the Family Frights by Night, when the whole family can join a spooky guided tour of the historic houses. that continued success is about more than professional pride as he described the Fort’s status: “Fort Amherst is a registered charity, and so along with the many volunteers who work hard to help raise funds, I do my best to keep making the event bigger and better to keep the grounds open free of charge and to continue vital restoration work.”

All the energy poured into ensuring a horrific time is had by all seems to be paying off, with rave reviews leading to an ever increasing popularity. This is a welcome challenge for the Fort’s Marketing Manager Ross Friday, who is a long term fan of the Fort’s Halloween Horrors, having been a regular visitor for the last 20 years! He explained the unique situation in which he finds himself stating that: “It’s a very unusual situation to be so heavily involved in an attraction with which I associate so many memories - even if those memories are of being terrified! Every year I promise I won’t put myself through it again… and every year I do. I have tried other similar events, but have not been able to find the same intensity anywhere.”

When asked about the enduring appeal of Fort Amherst’s Halloween Horrors, Ross speculated that “it

could be due to the volunteers who make it what it is - they’re not here for wages, but because they love what they do and I think that enthusiasm makes all the difference. I also wonder if the Fort’s genuine history and atmosphere plays a role - the area includes an ancient Saxon burial ground and is heavily researched by paranormal investigators who regularly report unexplained phenomena, and so the Fort’s genuine history serves to add to the imagined horrors of Halloween”.

ROLEX’S Deepsea Challenge TO THE DEEPEST REACHES OF THE OCEAN

rue to its passion for underwater exploration, Rolex took an active part in the historic DEEPSEA CHALLENGE expedition of film-maker and explorer James Cameron (Titanic, Avatar ) in partnership with the National Geographic Society. On 26th March 2012, the expedition’s submersible descended 10,908 metres (35,787 feet) to reach Challenger Deep, the deepest point in the world’s oceans located in the Mariana Trench, south-west of Guam in the Pacific Ocean.

The DEEPSEA CHALLENGER carried an experimental divers’ watch, the ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE, on its robotic manipulator arm. The timepiece worked perfectly throughout the dive at extreme pressures, confirming Rolex’s position as the leading brand in waterproofness.

ECHOING THE HISTORIC DIVE OF 1960

Both James Cameron’s expedition and the ROLEX DEEPSEA CHALLENGE directly echo the bathyscaphe Trieste’s historic dive on 23rd January 1960, the first and until 2012 the only manned dive to the deepestknown point in the Mariana Trench. On that exploit, an experimental Oyster model, the DEEP SEA SPECIAL, was attached to the hull and accompanied the Trieste into the abyss. It reached the record depth of 10,916 metres (35,814 feet), returning to the surface in perfect working order, a feat that remained unrivalled for more than half a century.

James Cameron was thrilled at the additional opportunity to take a 1960 DEEP SEA SPECIAL with him

in the cockpit of the DEEPSEA CHALLENGER: “As soon as I got into the sub, I found a special place to attach the ‘Old Lady’, the sister of the watch that went down 52 years ago on the Trieste. She kept me company on the dive to the most remote place on this planet, and was my good luck charm.”

WEIGHT TRAINING AND CARDIO TRAINING FOR WOMEN

This is your warm up. To make it easier note the effort level required on specific days of the workout routine: • At a 6/10 effort level, you should be breathing steadily, but deeply, and be able to speak a full sentence with little difficulty.

Remember to cool down afterwards, decreasing the speed every 2 minutes until you are sufficiently cooled down. Your warm up and cool down count towards the total cardio time.

This female workout plan is composed of 5 days of training: • 5 days of weight training.

People often use the word toning to say “I want to get muscle, but not too much”, and they think that doing long repetitions will provide them with this toned body.

largely caused by your nutrition, in addition to your workouts.

WOMEN MUST AIM FOR 10-12 REPS TO SHAPE BODIES

Now you know that if you want to get fit, you will have to work these muscles effectively. In order to do so, you will have to aim for a recommended rep range of: 1012 reps. This is the best rep range to achieve a good definition to your muscles.

When looking at body weight exercises that do not require weights, the rep range can be increased. Since you are not limited by a set amount of weight, you are simply going through the motions of the exercise (flexing and relaxing the muscles) which requires less effort but can be very effective in strengthening and toning the target muscles.

The rep range can also be increased in warm ups. When warming up, less weight should be used.

The point of a warm up is to get the muscles and joints active and accustomed to the motion you’ll be doing at a higher weight to reduce the risk of injury.

REST TIME BETWEEN EACH SET AND EXERCISE

If you want to get toned your body will need to recover between each set and exercise.

So rest 30 seconds - 1 minute between sets and 2 - 3 minutes between exercises.

Leave at least one day between each of your full-body machine weightlifting sessions. If you’re just starting out and know that you have a slower recovery system, rest for two days.

More rest is better than not enough rest, so make sure you’re fully recovered and feeling great each time you step into the gym.

As long as you get in at least two workouts per week, you will start seeing fitness improvements and more lean muscle mass.

umpkin, garlic, leek, pomegranate and sweet potato are all popular ingredients during the winter months, when hearty dishes provide us with comfort as the temperature outside drops.

Read on to find out more about this season’s bounty of healthy fruits and vegetables.

Pumpkins are native to North America and are commonly used as glowing Jack-o’-lanterns on Halloween. The flesh inside the thick shell is delicious and can be enjoyed roasted, boiled and mashed with butter, or added to casseroles, soups and curries.

When selecting a pumpkin for eating, the smaller sizes tend to be tastier.

The British season for pumpkins runs between October and December, making it an ideal ingredient in hearty dishes, such as this pumpkin lasagne. Pumpkin keeps for several weeks if stored in a cool, dark, well-aired place; but should be eaten within a week once cut.

PUMPKINS

Pumpkins are extremely healthy and an excellent source of fibre. The seeds of a pumpkin can also be used and contain healthy levels of magnesium.

Instead of buying ready-to-eat pumpkin seeds you could try preparing your own. Simply scoop out of the pumpkin, clean, boil for ten minutes to soften and then bake in the oven at 120°C/100°C Fan/Gas 1/2 for around 45 minutes.

Vegetables, like fruits, are low in calories and fats but contain good amounts of vitamins and minerals. All the GreenYellow-Orange vegetables are rich sources of calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, beta-carotene, vitamin B-complex, vitamin-C, vitamin-A, and vitamin K. As in fruits, vegetables too are home for many antioxidants. These health benefiting phyto-chemical compounds firstly; help protect the human body from oxidant stress, diseases, and cancers, and secondly; help the body develop the capacity to fight against these by boosting immunity.

Additionally, vegetables are packed with soluble as well as insoluble dietary fibre known as non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) such as cellulose, mucilage, hemi-cellulose, gums, pectin...etc. These substances absorb excess water in the colon and help its smooth passage out of the body.

POMEGRANATE

Pomegranate’s jewel-like seeds are great in salads, rice dishes or desserts such as Pavlovas and fruit tarts – release the juicy jewels by cutting the fruit in half, hold over a bowl and hit with a wooden spoon. You can then discard the skin and bitter white membrane. Pomegranate is believed to have originated from Iran and is now widely grown throughout the Mediterranean, US, Middle East and India.

The fruit has grown in popularity over the years because it is full of antioxidant vitamins. It also contains high levels of vitamin C, which is important for maintaining healthy skin, teeth and bones.

The sweet variety of pomegranate sold in the UK varies in colour from deep red to yellow with a blushed pink skin.

Pomegranates yield delicious sweet juice which can be extracted by putting the seeds in a sieve and pressing lightly with the back of a spoon – take care though, as the juice will stain clothes. Pomegranate seeds are very versatile and can be used to add flavour to sweet and savoury dishes. Try adding to salmon and spinach salad, ice cream and sorbets or simply as a juice.

SWEET POTATOES

Sweet potatoes aren’t actually related to ordinary garden potatoes. They have a lighter, fluffier texture and count towards your 5-a-day.

Sweet potatoes, or ‘yams’ as they are known in North America, are native to tropical regions of the Americas.

The flesh of sweet potatoes varies in colour from bright orange to cream and purple, making dishes such as sweet potato and spinach curry really stand out.

Sweet potatoes are an excellent source of carbohydrates, while they are also rich in fibre and vitamins A, C and B6.

The sweet, lightly spiced flavour of sweet potato makes it an ideal vegetable to get children eating their 5-a-day.

A HEALTHY DIET When increasing the amount of fruits, vegetables, and legumes you eat, be sure to eat them in place of less nutritious foods, not in addition to them.

Many fruits, vegetables, and legumes are also rich in nutrients, such as vitamins A and C, folate, and potassium.

When shopping for fruits and vegetables, choose an assortment of different types and colours to provide you with a variety of nutrients.

LEEKS

Leeks are easy to prepare for cooking, simply trim off the tough green tops and roots. Slice lengthways, then rinse under running water to remove any dirt. Dry with kitchen paper and slice.

Add to soups, pasta, savoury tarts, pies and stews, or fry gently and serve as a side dish.

Although related to garlic and onions, leeks have a much subtler and sweeter flavour and can be used for tasty sides with hearty autumn and winter dishes.

Just like their two other family members, leeks contain many of the same minerals and vitamins which have proven health benefits.

Smaller leeks are often more tender and have a sweeter flavour, making them ideal for use in dishes such as leek risotto.

It is important to prepare leeks well as soil can get trapped between the layers of leaves. If slicing, place in a colander and hold under running water to remove any dirt.

Leeks can be cooked easily in a number of ways, from boiling and steaming to sautĂŠing and poaching.

HOW MUCH DO I NEED?

GARLIC

Garlic is one of the most important ingredients in any kitchen and is a staple of Mediterranean and Asian cooking. Just peel cloves and add crushed, chopped or sliced to stir-fries, soups and stews.

Garlic, just like onions, is a member of the lily family.

It’s known as one of the best medicinal plants, credited with having an ability to lower cholesterol and blood pressure.

Folklore even claims that garlic has the ability to ward off vampires and other evil spirits! These garlic mushrooms on toasted French bread are a great way to use up garlic cloves, Garlic can be easily peeled by laying the blade of a large knife on top of the clove and the pressing down hard with the heel of your hand to loosen the skin.

For simple homemade garlic bread, toast some French bread or ciabatta on a griddle pan before rubbing the clove on it and then brushing with olive oil.

FRUIT To gain the maximum benefit from fruit, eat it fresh and if the skins are edible, eat them too.

Dried fruits and fruit juices count towards your five a day. Use them in moderation, though, because fruit loses most of its natural fibre in the juicing process and dried fruits lose most of their vitamin C. Try to eat two or three portions of fruit every day. One portion equates to 80g.

VEGETABLES Balance your vegetable intake between the orange/red and green varieties.

The more colourful your choice, the healthier it usually is.

As an easy rule, the darker and brighter the colour of the vegetable the more vitamins, minerals and fibre they usually contain. For example, spinach contains more nutrients than lettuce.

Make sure you balance the more starchy vegetables like corn, butternut squash, pumpkin, peas, root vegetables and sweet potatoes with less starchy vegetables like courgettes, green beans, spinach, broccoli and cauliflower.

METHOD OF HOW TO COOK • Heat the Bertolli in a large frying pan and gently cook the bacon for 5 minutes until crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and set aside.

• Add the courgettes to the hot pan and cook for 10 minutes, stirring from time to time until tender and golden. Add the garlic, rosemary and crispy bacon, and cook for a further 2 minutes.

• Meanwhile, cook the pasta in a large pan of water for 8–10 minutes until tender. Drain and return to the warm pan, off the heat. Add the courgette and bacon mix, cream and cheese, and toss well together until the pasta is coated.

METHOD OF HOW TO COOK • Finely chop the shallot and slice the mushroom. Strip the leaves from the thyme stems and halve the tomatoes.

• Put the pappardelle in a large saucepan and cook in salted boiling water according to packet instructions.

• Meanwhile, in a medium saucepan, heat the olive oil and gently sweat the shallot and mushrooms with the thyme leaves until soft.

Add the cream and wine and simmer for a few minutes.

• Stir in the pesto and tomatoes and heat for another minute more.

• Drain the pasta and put back into the saucepan with a little

of the pasta cooking liquid and the mushroom sauce. Crumble in the goat’s cheese and stir through. Serve sprinkled with the chives.

Sailing along one of Europe’s iconic waterways aboard one of these charming vessels is surely the most relaxing and sublimely comfortable way to enjoy the continent’s grand cultural cities and ever-changing scenic panoramas. There is no need to pack and unpack more than once, and moorings invariably place you at the heart of the action, just minutes’ walk from shops, bars and restaurants. No wonder river cruising has been growing hugely in popularity in recent years.

For cruise holidays, there is something to recommend every significant river in Europe, from the Oder to the Volga, the Seine to the Douro, but two in particular stand out for the sheer breadth of attractions that they offer.

The Rhine, winding its way 830km northeast from the Swiss Alps to the North Sea, has been a ‘history-maker’ for millennia – as the barrier between Celtic and Germanic tribes, the backbone of the Frankish, Carolingian and Holy Roman Empires and, later, as the much disputed border between France and Germany.

Though the river begins as a raging torrent plunging through steep mountain gorges and over waterfalls, it stabilises into the peaceful and beautiful ‘heroic Rhine’ of literature and legend,

dotted with fairy-tale castles and picturesque vineyards. This enchanting section, the Rhine of the Lorelei, the nymph who lured fishermen to their deaths with her singing, and Siegfried, who slew a dragon on its shores, forms the focus of the majority of cruises.

The Danube, the longest European river outside Russia, rises in Germany’s Black Forest and flows almost 3,000km to the Black Sea, through no fewer than 10 countries, including Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Slovakia, whose capital cities stand on its banks. Another important highway of antiquity, the Danube was famed as the long-time frontier of the Roman Empire and, as such, the cultural influences to the north and south can be markedly different. Its majesty has inspired great works of literature and art, including the 16th century Danube school of landscape painting and, of course, music, most notably Johan Strauss’ waltz On the Beautiful Blue Danube. Though its waters may not always be as vividly blue as that music has its visitors expect, the Danube still presents the most romantic and captivating way to travel between Central and Eastern Europe.

On both rivers there is plenty of choice for holidaymakers of all budgets, from great value 3* vessels to extraordinary deluxe floating palaces. Food on board is generally excellent, freshly prepared and inspired by the regions cruised, and many operators will also routinely include complimentary wine

Explains Jason: “It was just a TV show, with the simplest of set-ups: two brothers, Derek ‘Del Boy’ Trotter and his younger brother Rodney, living with their grandfather in a South London tower block and making their way, very unsuccessfully, as market traders. Yet how its tentacles reached out.

“In 2011, I met a former Army sergeant called Liam Byrne who told me how, on a mission in Afghanistan, one of his tight unit of men had been killed and they

were all so distraught that he didn’t know how to pull them back together.

“Then he remembered that his wife had packed some things to cheer him up in the event of bad times. At the bottom of his bag he found some Pot Noodles and a copy of The Jolly Boys Outing, the Only Fools And Horses Christmas Special from 1989.

“They boiled up the Pot Noodles, they put on The Jolly Boys Outing and watching those wally-brains on screen, being ridiculously British on a trip to Margate, somehow lifted the morale of those battered lads out of the dust.”

ave you ever been in a room that just feels right?

Nine times out of ten, it’s because it has a simple design that functions well. But creating a simple design is harder than it looks — particularly in bedrooms.

Why? Because every bedroom absolutely has to have a bed in it. And beds are big and ungainly, and dictate the placement of every other object in the room. But if you’re lucky enough to be planning a bedroom from scratch or remodelling an existing bedroom, you can control the other elements and create a space that’s both practical and looks great.

Because the bedroom is one of the simplest rooms in the house, it’s often overlooked. One of the first steps to a great bedroom design is having an efficient and well-designed floor plan that gives you everything you want — no matter how much space you start with.

SIMPLE CIRCULATION

Try to keep your circulation on one side of the room. Hotels do a great job of this. There’s a reason 90 percent of hotels have the same floor plan: because it’s simple and it works. Circulation plans become a little more challenging with en suite rooms or bedrooms that have doors to the outside.

To save on space, pay attention to where you locate the bathroom and wardrobe area in your bedroom.

Rooms that have bathroom or wardrobe access before the sleeping area require a longer hall. If you organize the circulation so the bathroom and wardrobe are accessed through the sleeping area, you don’t need a separate hall, and you can add the circulation space into the room to make it feel larger, too.

FOCUS ON THE VIEW

A bedroom always feels nicer when the first thing you experience is a pleasant view out the window — as opposed to a view looking straight at the bed. If you’re designing a new bedroom or reworking an old one, try to come up with a layout that focuses on the vista — whether it’s something as stunning as a lake or as simple as your garden. a HOME INTERIOR

KEEP PRIVACY IN MIND It’s always nice when you can leave the bedroom door open without forsaking all of your privacy. A small hallway can provide separation from the family room.

Try to avoid designing a layout in which you look directly into the bedroom from a more public space, like a lounge, kitchen or family room.

CONNECT WITH THE OUTDOORS While this might not be feasible in all climates, connecting a room with the outdoors is a great way to make the space feel larger and admit more natural light. If your bedroom is on the ground floor or is on the second storey and has an adjacent terrace, adding a set of French doors can instantly increase visual space.

CONSIDER THE FURNITURE LAYOUT Your bedroom’s architecture should take your furniture into account. Bedroom floor plans usually have a bed wall — but what about dressing tables, bedside tables, chest of drawers, TVs, chairs and a desk? GARDENING October THE AUTUMN CHILL SETS IN

lthough we had some warmer days over September, the autumn is now definitely here for real, and it feels colder. It’s a beautiful time of year, with the trees changing colour. Sometimes it may seem pointless raking, when the wind blows even more leaves onto the lawn, but just think of all the lovely leafmould you can make! It’s also time to start preparing for early frosts.

TIDY BORDERS

Keep on weeding and have a gentle tidy up in your borders but do try to resist the temptation of a thorough spring clean. Leave seedheads for the birds if you don’t want to collect them and as much cover as you can bear for wildlife who will appreciate the winter shelter.

Fallen leaves can be left to rot down (or collected for leaf mould), however diseased material is another matter; make it a priority to clear and burn it to prevent pests and diseases overwintering courtesy of your kind hospitality! Put the rest of your garden rubbish (apart from woody stems) in the compost.

GARDENING SECTION

START YOUR COMPOST

If you haven’t already done so, start your compost going by buying a bin or building a partially enclosed area for a heap. It is vital to replace the goodness in soil after a hefty growing season and autumn produces masses of garden waste that will put invaluable organic richness back into the ground for next spring.

Add a variety of different materials; spent vegetable and bedding plants, herbaceous leftovers, thatch, moss and cuttings from the lawn, weeds (but not the roots unless they have been through a shredder), hedge clippings, kitchen peelings and tea bags are ideal.

Turn once a week or so if you can and NEVER add diseased or pest-ridden material (such as diseased rose petals - heinous culprits) to your compost - it is a warm and welcoming nirvana for unwelcome guests who will reappear with a vengeance next year! Onto the bonfire with them without a qualm.a

PREPARE SOIL FOR NEXT YEAR

Your soil is your most precious commodity, so start digging in compost, manure and as much organic matter as you can lay your hands on to replace the goodness in it. The earlier you start the better, especially if your soil is heavy. It can be left in a pretty rough state over the winter when the elements will break the clods down, making spring planting infinitely easier!

WATERING

Hardly an issue at the moment! However, do keep an eye on your pots and containers in dry spells and check for wilting leaves before it is too late; all plants that keep their leaves continue to transpire, so should not be allowed to dry out completely.

Ensure trees or shrubs planted in the last couple of years on lawns or in areas of rough grass have a circle of clear earth around them - this should be kept clear to allow moisture to get to the roots. Mulching with bark or compost will help.

PLANTING

With the ideal planting conditions of autumn (warm moist soil), now is the time to plant container grown shrubs, trees, fruit bushes, perennials and bulbs. Even in damp conditions it is worth checking that the rootballs of shrubs and trees are adequately moist when planting - heavy rain will not necessarily penetrate a rootball that has been allowed to dry out, so if it feels light, plunge into a bucket of water before planting.

CLEAN OUT THE GREENHOUSE

It really is worth cleaning out your greenhouse thoroughly now your greenhouse crops are over; it will prevent pests from hibernating and leaping into action next spring.

Wash the windows inside and out to allow maximum light in over the winter and scrub all benches, fixtures and glazing bars with disinfectant, making sure you hose the whole place down really well, especially dark and dusty corners.

For effective fumigation, move all plants outside, shut the windows, light a sulphur candle in the middle of the floor, (retreat at speed!), shut the door and wait until the smoke and fumes have completely dispersed several hours later. Your greenhouse should now be pest free!

RAKE FALLEN LEAVES

Don’t waste fallen leaves (except those perilous rose leaves and evergreens, which take too long to rot down) - given time they decompose into fabulously rich leaf mould - aka ‘nature’s soil conditioner of choice’!

Rake up fallen leaves and throw them into a simple frame to make leaf mould (black bin liners spiked with air holes will also do if you can bear the visual offense - but remember to dampen the leaves first).

If left to linger on the lawn for long, the grass will turn yellow. Leaf mould takes about a year to mature (2 in the case of oak leaves), makes a great top dressing for woodland plants such as rhododendrons and is an excellent and FREE home-grown substitute for peat. mmm GARDENING SECTION

The new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman uses the same highly tuned engine as the John Cooper Works Hatch and Convertible models. The 2-litre unit features the latest MINI TwinPower Turbo Technology and Valvetronic fully variable valve control on both the intake and exhaust camshafts. To effectively realise the increased output of 231 hp between 5,000-6,000rpm (up 39 hp on the standard Cooper S engine), the John Cooper Works Clubman uses a modified turbocharger made from a particularly heat resistant material. A correspondingly larger intercooler is also fitted, which contributes to an increase in torque to 350 nm which develops over a particularly wide band from 1,450-4,800rpm. Increasing the boost pressure is teamed with a lower compression ratio thanks to the use of modelspecific pistons. Unsurprisingly, the cooling system has also been upgraded to cope with the increased heat generated by a more powerful engine, and now features a second coolant radiator found in the left-hand wheel arch. Finally, a sports exhaust helps to reduce the engine’s backpressure and also gives the John Cooper Works Clubman a sporty sound familiar from other models in the John Cooper Works range.

ADVANCED GEARBOXES AND AN ALL-WHEEL DRIVE DRIVETRAIN

With the new John Cooper Works Clubman, MINI is for the first time combining its most potent engine offering with its ALL4 all-wheel drive system. The result is the most efficient possible deployment of the available power, providing very strong acceleration in all conditions.

The considerable power and torque of the 2-litre turbocharged engine is fed through either a six-speed manual gearbox or an 8-speed sports Steptronic transmission. The manual gearbox offers ideally spaced ratios, a model-specific gear lever and short shift mechanism for rapid gearchanges, and also features an engine speed adaption facility via a gear sensor for the smoothest possible downshifts. Carbon friction linings for the synchronising rings add to the inherent efficiency of this lightweight, easy-to-use gearbox.

SUSPENSION AND BRAKING

Naturally, the suspension and braking set up of the new MINI John Cooper Works Clubman has been upgraded to match its increased performance. As with the other John Cooper Works specification MINIs in the range, the John Cooper Works Clubman features a firmer suspension set-up, in this case specifically tailored to the Clubman’s wheelbase and weight distribution.

Variable Damper Control is available as an optional extra, offering a choice of two set-ups for the electronically controlled dampers, which can be accessed via the MINI Driving Modes, a standard feature on the John Cooper Works Clubman. SPORT mode

provides the most dynamic driving experience, while in MID and GREEN mode the damper characteristics support a more comfortable driving style.

The standard Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) also includes Dynamic Traction Control (DTC), Electronic Differential Lock Control (EDLC) - which acts as an electronic locking function for the front axle differential - and Performance Control, which assists agile turn-in when taking bends at speed. SOuTH EAST RESIDENTS COuLD LOSE £43 IN HOuSING BENEFIT A WEEK A proposed cap on Housing Benefit could see the South East’s supported housing residents asked to make up a shortfall of more than £43 a week to pay rent. According to figures from the Starts at Home campaign, roughly 4,600 people could be affected in the first year alone. The Starts at Home campaign aims to highlight the importance of supported housing, a diverse sector made up of schemes that provide extra care and support ranging from women’s refuges and specialist dementia accommodation to veterans’ services. On 1st September, housing associations are taking part in ‘Starts at Home Day’ – a day of campaigning to celebrate supported housing across England. In the South East, there are more than 55,000 living in this type of housing, nearly three quarters of whom are older people. The estimated £43 a week shortfall in Housing Benefit would mean that these groups need to find more than £2,200 a year to cover their rent.

Nish Kumar is set to tour the uK with his fifth solo show ‘Nish Kumar: Actions Speak Louder Than Words unless You Shout The Words Real Loud’. This follows a month long run at the Pleasance Courtyard Cabaret Bar in August, where the show premieres.

The tour takes in 40 dates and starts on Saturday 1st October in Maidstone at The Hazlitt Theatre and culminates on 12th December at London’s Duchess Theatre. DAME BARBARA WINDSOR DBE CALLS ON THE PEOPLE OF WEST KENT TO SuPPORT THE POPPY APPEAL Actress Dame Barbara Windsor has joined forces with The Royal British Legion to urge the people of West Kent to volunteer their spare time during this year’s Poppy Appeal campaign.

Dame Barbara accompanied poppy volunteers to launch the Legion’s Poppy People campaign – a national recruitment drive for Poppy Appeal volunteers.

Dedicated and enthusiastic volunteers in West Kent and surrounding areas, are being sought to form part of The Royal British Legion’s army of fundraisers for this year’s Poppy Appeal.

Each year more than 350,000 poppy volunteers are needed across the country to raise much-needed funds to support current and former Armed Forces personnel, and their families.

The Legion is looking for people of all ages and backgrounds to help run the Poppy Appeal in local communities across the nation.

Volunteers are being sought across West Kent, in particular in Gillingham, Rochester, Maidstone and Bluewater.

Officially launching this year’s Poppy People campaign, Dame Barbara said: “I’ve been a strong supporter of The Royal British Legion for many years now, and I’ve taken part in many events like this in support of the Poppy Appeal.

“It’s a charity and cause which is close to my heart, and I feel a tremendous debt of gratitude to servicemen and women for protecting our country. It’s only right that we show our appreciation and support at this time of year.”

HOuSEBuILDER RAISES A CuP TO NEW TEAROOM Staff from Barratt Homes visited a different building site in Aylesham this week to find out how their money is helping to create a community hub for the future.

The housebuilder, which is building new homes at its Aylesham Village development nearby, is supporting a project to bring a new tearoom to the village. The mission is being driven by local volunteers, who have raised £48,000 in just over two years and their hard work has paid off, with construction of the new tearoom well underway.

Set behind the parish council offices in Milner Crescent, the footings were laid last month and the building could be complete and serving food and drink by Christmas.

to raise such a huge amount towards its construction in just over two years is testament to the community spirit here in Aylesham. We are very proud to support such a successful and worthy project and hope the new tearoom brings enjoyment to everyone who uses it.”

Mandy Mills, lead volunteer for the project, added: “The pop up tearoom and shop received great support from the village and beyond but sadly we can only run them twice a week, which is why we’re excited to soon have a permanent base.

The Barratt Homes donation will go towards our build costs and will enable the village a permanent place where people can meet and buy food and refreshments at reasonable prices.”

The new tea room has been well supported by a number of other local businesses, with Fineview Landscapes, Ovendens and Harwood Building Control all among those lending their skills to the construction project.

An astounding show of support for a Tunbridge Wellsbased charity means nearly £10,000 has been raised for ill and disabled children through a single event.

More teams chose to raise money for Tree of Hope than for any other charity at the Dragon Boat Festival at Bewl Water, near Lamberhurst. The specialist children’s charity had six teams paddling on their behalf, including M&S, local businesses Southpaw and Infinity, friends of Tree of Hope staff and two families who are being supported by the organisation.

Fundraising manager, Emma Bourne, says they had so many people involved that there was, in effect, a Tree of Hope village at the event.

“It was absolutely amazing. Each of our teams set up eye-catching stalls with a raffle, fabulous cakes and facepainting. In fact, the M&S team won the £100 prize for best stand and donated that money to Tree of Hope as well.

“The four teams being sponsored directly for Tree of Hope raised almost £7,000 between them and the two families were sponsored for their own campaigns.”

T

he film ‘Saving Private Ryan’ tells of one son who was returned to his family after the Second World War whilst sadly his brothers perished. The late 1700s saw the return of all three brothers of a Sevenoaks family who fought in the ‘Seven Year War’.

On a high ridge along the outskirts of Sevenoaks stands an Obelisk overlooking an exclusive housing estate that bears the name ‘Montreal’.

Forever associated with the family name of Amherst, both are set deep in the recorded history of Sevenoaks. The legacy and story began with the first Jeffrey Amherst. A Kentish lawyer by

profession, Jeffrey died in 1750 having fathered seven sons and two daughters.

Of the sons, Jeffrey, John and William entered into the army and over the years were to become inseparable. The father had acquired great wealth during his lifetime, using this money to acquire large areas of land upon which he had built a large mansion calling it ‘Brooks’.

Much of the house was constructed from materials obtained from the demolition of the hospital of St John the Baptist, which was situated in an area of Sevenoaks now known as St. Johns.

The house was built by a builder named Culpepper and over the intervening years, the estate grew to considerable size as further land was acquired. a LOCAL HISTORY

Jeffery Amherst, the first son, was born on January 29th, 1717 at the ancestral home of Brooks. Followed by his brothers, he grew up in a military household becoming page to the Duke of Dorset then living at nearby Knole House in Sevenoaks. It soon became obvious that Jeffery was destined to join the military and in 1735 aged 14, he became an ensign in the Grenadier Guards.

Quickly rising through the ranks he was to prove very able at military strategy, so much so that he soon obtained the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. This was a time of troubles in Austria which eventually became known as ‘The War of Austrian Succession’. Many European powers disputed the succession of Maria Theresa to the throne of Austria upon the death of her father, Emperor Charles IV in 1740. The dispute ran to a war between Austria, supported

by England and Holland, and Prussia supported by France and Spain.

During this period, Jeffery became an aide to General John Ligonier seeing action at the Battle of Dettingen in June, 1743 and the Battle of Fontenoy in May 1745. Further actions were the Battle of Rocoux in 1746 in which Jeffery became aide to the Duke of Cumberland who was the commander of the British forces.

Ten years later he was in Germany where, in 1756, he was appointed commissar to the Hessian Forces. With the threat of a war between England and France, he was instrumental in a The Obelisk commemorating the brothers reunion

arranging the transportation of thousands of Germans to south east England in an attempt to stop a French invasion. In the event the French did not invade and with a rise in rank to Major General, Jeffery joined Brigadier General James Wolfe who was preparing to lead a British attack on Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island in June 1758.

This signalled the start of the ‘Seven Year War’.

Appointed commander-in-chief of the British Army in North America, Jeffery led an attack against the French troops on Lake Champlain. On September 8th, 1760 he led an army down the St Lawrence Ricer and captured Montreal ending the French rule in North America.

Knighted in the same year, Jeffery Amherst became the 1st British Governor General of the Territories that eventually became Canada. Holding this post till 1763 he returned

triumphant to England. He returned to his birthplace at Riverhead in Sevenoaks and quickly had the old family home of ‘Brooks’ demolished, building in its place another stately home calling it ‘Montreal’.

It was here that he continued to live whilst serving as commander-in-chief of the British Army from 1772 till 1795. Made a Baron in 1776, he became known as ‘Baron Amherst of Holmesdale’.

His two brothers, William and John, had also fought with distinction in the army.

With the ending of the British/French wars, all three were re-united at Montreal. To commemorate this joyful occasion, a granite Obelisk was erected within the grounds of the house upon which was scribed the achievements of the brothers. On the north facing side the following was cut:

“To commemorate the providential and happy meeting of three brothers on this their paternal ground on the 25th January 1764 after six years glorious war in which the three were successfully engaged in various climbs, seasons and services”. On the east facing side is recorded the following: OUISBOURGH Surrendered, and six French Battalions Prisoners or War, 26th July, 1758.

NIAGARA Surrendered 25th July, 1759.

QUEBEC Capitulated 18th September, 1759.

On the south side is inscribed – Dedicated to that most noble Statesman during whose administration Cape Breton and Canada were conquered and from whose influence the British Arms derived a Degree of Lustre unparalleled in past ages.

On the west side is inscribed: FORT LEVI Surrendered 25th August, 1760.

ISLE QU NOIX Abandoned 28th August, 1760.

TICONDEROGA Taken possession 26th July, 1759.

MONTREAL Surrendered, and with all Canada, and ten French Battalions laid down their arms. The 8th September, 1760.

CROWN POINT Taken possession 24th August, 1759.

ST JOHN’S, NEWFOUNDLAND Retaken 18th September 1762.

LOCAL HISTORY

With the death of Earl Amherst in 1925 Montreal House was sold to Mr. J Runge of Kippington Court.

Finding no use for the mansion, it was demolished in 1933 with the rest of the estate being sold off some years later to become the fine housing estate we see today.

The Obelisk remains in the garden of one of the houses in Marlborough Crescent whilst the Summer House, a folly of the Amherst era, continues to steadily crumble.

It has recently come to light that the Obelisk was not the inspiration of Jeffrey but of William, one of the younger brothers.

Currently under discussion with English Heritage as to its legal owner, it stands as a memorial to at least one family reunited after war. mmm By ROBIN J BROOKS

The Romans had a significant impact on the area in which we live – including building the first bridge at Rochester – and now members of the public can find out more in a free lecture.

This free lecture, given by Kentish historian and author Simon Elliott, will explain more about this fascinating time in Medway’s history.

Mr Elliott said: “Many people know about the large towns established by the Romans, but what they don’t realise in many instances is where the materials needed to construct these urban developments came from. In the South East, including London, that material came from ragstone quarries near the River Medway.”

The talk, entitled The Romans on the Medway, will take place at 7pm on Thursday, 6th October, in the Guildhall Museum, Rochester. Please note, there is no step-free access to this first-floor venue.
