Welcome ike plenty of other parents and grandparents, this time of year brings with it rather mixed blessings. After the start of the summer being defined by final exams for A-Levels or GCSEs and August the revelation of the results, September delivers the inevitable outcome. Whether that is the prospect of a new school, college course or apprenticeship, many of us have the sometimes painful experience of waving off our sons and daughters as they embark on a university course. Of course, there is the delight in seeing them secure the place on the course they want, and the sense that they are on a stepping stone in the transition to adulthood, but few would deny there is a wave of emotion which crashes over you at the thought of your child entering the big wide world without you. If you’re in that boat right now, I share the highs and lows with you! It seems just like the other day when they were knee high to the proverbial grasshopper, and now they’re bidding farewell as they start a course at the other end of the country. It’s as much a transition for the parents as it is the child. Hopefully this edition of mmm will give you plenty to keep your mind off affairs of the heart – at least for a while. Inside we’ve got our normal blend of fashion, features and food to keep you entertained and give you plenty of ideas. There’s everything from how to start your own vegetable garden, to healthy eating, fitness and even a special focus on Scotney Castle – a beautiful National Trust classic house in Lamberhurst, near Tunbridge Wells. It is the perfect combination of splendid architecture and heritage both inside and out. So plenty to enjoy. As ever, we always welcome your feedback on the magazine and love to hear from you. Enjoy this edition and here’s hoping we enjoy a bit of an Indian summer this year.

NATALIE PORTMAN IS FAST BECOMING ONE OF HOLLYWOOD’S MOST POWERFUL FIGURES, THE FORCE IS WITH HER… ith some very limited exceptions, appearing in a Star Wars film when young is rarely a ticket to greater success. More often than not, it pigeon-holes the actor and guarantees only a place at conventions for those with a keen passion for their favourite science fiction creation. But not when it comes to Natalie Portman. In fact, it could be said she is

W

second only to Harrison Ford in not allowing the enormous hype which washes over the world when a new Star Wars movie hits the cinema screen to drown any hope of future success. She was just 16 when filming began on Star Wars: The Phantom Menace – the first of the three prequels which laid out the story of Darth Vader’s creation and set the groundwork for the classic trilogy released between 1977 and 1983. Certainly she had a role like few others can ever claim. Cast as Padme Amidala, she was to be the mother of both Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia – plus be the inspiration behind Anakin Skywalker’s descent to the ‘dark side’ and his re-birth as the terrible Lord Vader. She appeared in all three of the prequels – all of which met with a very mixed critical reception. Yet despite that, the Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith did not see her choice of roles, going forward, restricted. Although, she admits, it very nearly did. “Everyone thought I was a horrible actress,” she revealed after the first movie was released. “I was in the biggest-grossing movie of the decade, and no director wanted to work with me.“ It was only thanks to the positive words of director Mike Nichols who had worked with her on the play The Seagull that she was taken seriously. A reputation further enhanced by the film Anywhere But Here in which she starred alongside Susan Sarandon. It was a challenging role which would secure her a Golden Globe nomination for best supporting actress. a

She had leapt over the hurdle of the curse of Star Wars and she would not look back. Since then she has been nominated twice for an Academy Award – winning in 2011 for her role in the stunning Black Swan – in addition to two Golden Globes and a BAFTA. Her list of movie credits include everything from blockbuster Marvel superhero Thor movies, historic drama The Other Boleyn Girl – filmed extensively in Kent, including scenes shot at Dover Castle – the colourful Mr Magorium’s Wonder Emporium, comic book translation for the big screen V is for Vendetta and the as yet unreleased Jane Got a Gun which will see her reunited on screen with Ewan McGregor, who starred with her in those Star Wars films. She has even now branched out into directing too – becoming as she does so one of Hollywood’s most respected and talented performers both in front and behind the camera. It’s been a remarkable journey for someone born in Jerusalem in 1981 to her housewife mother Shelley and Israeli gynaecologist Avner Hershlag. In 1984, aged just three, they moved to the US to follow her father who was receiving medical training. She still holds dual citizenship and has been outspoken in her views on the troubles in Israel – in particular her concern for the move to the right her country of birth has taken in recent years. She said: “I really love the United States, but I have a CELEBRITY FEATURE

to be honest and say my heart is in Jerusalem – that’s where I really feel at home.” Her love and talent for performing was apparent from an early age. At just four she started dancing lessons – with her parents turning down the chance for her to model at the age of just 10, allowing her instead to focus on acting. She recalls: “I was really ambitious as a child – more so than the other kids. I worked very hard; I knew what I liked and knew what I wanted. I was very serious in my intentions.” At the age of 12 she was selected to star alongside Jean Reno in Luc Besson’s Leon: The Professional – a role which saw her adopt the stage name Portman. And after graduating from high school she studied ballet and modern dance at the American Theatre Dance Workshop in New York and attended the Usdan Centre of Creative and Performing Arts. The roles kept coming too – with parts during the mid 1990s in the likes of Mars Attacks! and in the stage production of The Diary of Anne Frank. When Star Wars came knocking in 1997 – the first movie was released in 1999 – she had to sit out going to the premiere due to school work. Determined to not let her education suffer, “I’d rather be smart than a movie star” she once quipped, she continued to eventually emerge in 2003 with a degree in psychology from Harvard University. a

Certainly that background in dance paid off with her role as the young ballerina in 2010’s Black Swan – a role for which she had to practice dance for up to eight hours a day for six months. The plaudits and awards will have made the effort worthwhile. During those long hours of rehearsals, she met and began dating the dancer Benjamin Millepied. It was her first major romance after splitting with American folk singer Devendra Banhart. In 2010 she announced she and Millepied were engaged and in June 2011 she gave birth to their first child. The couple tied the knot in California in 2012. The two seek to keep their private life just that. Millepied is director of dance at the Paris Opera Ballet and, in order to fulfil Natalie’s desire for her children to be raised Jewish, has converted to Judaism. And, it seems, motherhood is her most satisfying role yet. “I love being a mother,” she admits. “I’m far less judgemental than I was before I had children. I love it.” She is an impressive woman – and one who is a strong role model to young women seeking to find that balance of career, education and family and delivering on all fronts. At just 34, she still has plenty of prime time left to take all aspects of her life to even more staggering heights. mmm

Emotive roar of Spitfire engine, Chatham he Biggin Hill Heritage Hangar has confirmed that ‘The Kent Spitfire’, TA805 ‘Spirit of Kent’, will once again provide an exhilarating air display at the Salute to the ‘40s event, on 19th and 20th September, at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. Kent is the only county to have its own Spitfire, originally part of a squadron purchased by the people of Kent in 1941. TO Subject to good weather, the distinctive and emotive roar of the Spitfire’s Rolls-Royce Merlin engine will be heard on both days as the pilot performs an exhilarating air display for visitors, accompanied by music and a commentary by the Heritage Hangar’s ‘Master of Ceremonies’, Robin Brooks.

Robin Brooks said: “We are proud to be associated with The Historic Dockyard Chatham and have performed at the 1940s weekend for a number of years. People have come to associate this particular Spitfire, with its distinctive ‘D-Day’ stripes, with the county of Kent and, wherever it flies throughout the UK, it is known as ‘The Kent Spitfire’. Together with what was once a great naval base and now a place of history, they represent all that is great about our country.” Visitors will begin to hear the rumble of the Spitfire’s engine in the distance as they look skyward and will see the ‘Spirit of Kent’ approach The Historic Dockyard along the line of the River Medway. Before long, TA805 will be put through its paces with low level passes and steep climbs in an impressive display. For more information please call 01634 823826 or visit www.thedockyard.co.uk

HEALTH BENEFITS of YOGA

YOGA IS SELF-HEALING THAT BRINGS FORTH HARMONY

BETWEEN BODY AND MIND

1. BRINGING INNER PEACE

2. IMPROVING OVERALL HEALTH

nner peace refers to a specific state of being mentally and spiritually at peace with enough knowledge and understanding to keep oneself strong during phases of stress. Bliss, happiness and contentment are the basic components of a peaceful mind which refers to a disposition free from the effects of stress. Finding inner peace is associated with Hinduism, Buddhism and selfrealization. Buddhism describes this peace as an experience of knowing oneself which can be achieved through yoga and meditation. Because during yoga we get more air into our lungs with each breath; we don’t have to breathe as quickly, and gradually our breathing slows down. This relaxing breathing alters our consciousness and transforms stress into peace.

here are various types of yoga asanas and benefits of yoga asanas are numerous. It provides us all round fitness, improves your stamina and reduces the problems of migraines and insomnia. Migraine is a headache that affects the nerves of the head and is accompanied by sensory warning signs like flashes of light, blind spots, nausea, vomiting and increased sensitivity to light and darkness. Insomnia is a common sleep disorder, and those who have insomnia have trouble falling asleep and staying asleep. Yoga asanas help to stretch out the muscles in your body and improves such conditions.

I

T

3. AIDING WEIGHT LOSS t has been proven that the breathing techniques that are followed during yoga help to strengthen our body and mind’s connection. It also aids us to deal with emotions that instigate stress and anxiety. Many people during the practice of yoga develop a greater sense of self-awareness. From sun salutations, veerbhadrasana, utkatasana, vrksasana, uttanasana, ardhya matsyendrasana, Badhakonasana, kumbhakasana, halasana, balasana and kapal bhati, all are important yoga asanas which can help to reduce weight. They also help tone the entire body, boost our metabolic system and help to burn fat.

I

4. BOOSTING THE IMMUNE SYSTEM oga boosts our immune system by enhancing the circulation of blood cells, decreasing stress hormones and stimulating the lymphatic system that aids to protect our body from the effects of toxins. A toxin is an antigenic poison of plant or animal origin, especially one produced by microorganisms and causes disease when present in low concentrations in the body. Yoga poses improve our breathing technique, strengthen our muscles and organs, stimulate changes in gene expression and improves our immune system.

Y

5. CONTROLLING DIABETES iabetes refers to a condition in which there is too much glucose in the blood, and it damages kidneys, nerves, teeth, eyes, feet and blood vessels which can lead to heart attack and stroke. When you follow a regular yoga schedule, your body commences responding to insulin that helps immensely in the reduction of blood glucose and it is also an excellent way to ďŹ ght stress. Effective postures of yoga for diabetes include pranayam, setubandhasana, balasana, vajrasana, sarvangasana, halasana, dhanurasana, chakrasana, paschimotasana and ardha matsyendrasana which also improve blood circulation in the arms and legs where diabetic patients mainly complain of pains.

D

Cardiovascular disease refers to conditions that involve blocked blood vessels that can lead to heart attack, chest pain and stroke. Yoga asanas can help to reduce blood pressure and potentially increase cardiac rehabilitation, lower cholesterol, blood sugar and stress hormones. The deep breathing yoga exercises help slow the breathing rate, which reduces blood pressure and soothes the nervous system that generates stress hormones.

A recent research proves that those who follow yoga asanas show a significant improvement in lung function and a reduction in asthma symptoms when compared with those who don’t follow the path of yoga. Yoga is really beneficial to our body, as deep breathing provides oxygen to our bodies and its various organs which is essential for our survival and aids the removal of waste products and toxins from the body. • Heat a little olive oil in a heavy saucepan. Add the garlic and sauté gently for one minute. Then add tomato paste and cook for one minute. Add the rice and cook for about a minute more. • Start adding the warm broth and stir the risotto. Every time the rice absorbs the liquid, add a couple more ladles. Keep stirring for about 25 to 30 minutes. Take the risotto off the heat and add the cheese. • Transfer to a bowl and let cool before assembling the rollatini. • Slice the very ends off the eggplant. Slice the eggplant into 1/4 inch slices. You should have five slices for a large eggplant. Salt the slices heavily and place in a colander for about one hour. Rinse the salt off the eggplant and press with paper towels to dry. • Heat a grill or grill pan on the stove. Make sure it’s hot before beginning. Brush the eggplant slices on both sides with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Grill on both sides until you have nice grill marks and the eggplant is pliable. • Place a little marinara sauce in the bottom of a small baking dish. Place some risotto all along the eggplant slices and roll up and place seam side down in baking dish. Top with marinara sauce. Bake at 350 degrees for 20 minutes covered. Remove cover and bake an additional ten minutes. Serve with grated parmesan cheese.

TEARS OF THE QI Clown ALAN DAVIES OVERCOMES HIS TRAUMATIC CHILDHOOD

TO BECOME STAR OF SCREEN AND STAGE

© JustinDowning for What Larks! Productions

n the middle of the 1980s a young Alan Davies headed to Canterbury to enrol on a drama course at the University of Kent. At the back of his mind he could have only dreamed it would be the first step on a career within the creative arts. He could never have imagined how it would set him on course to become a household name.

I

Because not only has he become a hugely successful stand-up comedian – an almost endless tour of venues brings him back to Canterbury’s Marlowe Theatre this November – but he has also become a team captain on one of TV’s most endearing and intelligent quiz shows and a talented actor in one of the BBC’s best-loved murder mysteries. a CELEBRITY FEATURE

52 mmm

Not bad for someone who first took to the stage to display his comedy timing in the less than salubrious surroundings of the Labour Club in Whitstable in 1988 – the year he graduated from his university course. Today, he is perhaps best known for his role as mystery solving Jonathan Creek and as the butt of many a gag on QI with Stephen Fry. Yet his past has been far from just non-stop gags. In fact, he has experienced some terrible tragedies in his life – not least his mother passing away when he was just six years old. It is something he admits that he is still struggling to accept even now, at the age of 49. Perhaps not unsurprisingly given the traumatic circumstances. His mother was aged 38 when she passed away from leukaemia. “I remember my mother being in hospital and being allowed to visit a couple of times,” he recalls, “then, without explanation, my visits were stopped. “It was only some years later that I found out that one of her doctors decided that it wouldn’t be healthy for me to see her in that condition.” All these years later, he remains unsure whether his mother was even told about the severity of her condition. Neither he nor his younger sister were told – leaving the six-year-old Alan still regretting not being given the opportunity to say his final goodbyes. “My understanding of it,” he says, “was that she wasn’t told that her illness was terminal. They decided it would be better, because she had three small children, not to tell her. “I don’t think they would have done that to a man, I think it was misogyny. Who knows what she might have done if she’d known? What she might have done for us and what she might have said to us that we would have had for the rest of our lives? I think it was a brutal act.” There was also a delay between her death and him being told she had passed away. a

CELEBRITY FEATURE

“My three-year-old sister wasn’t told. I was instructed not to say a word to her. She would keep asking me when we were going to the hospital to visit our mum and I’d have to invent some reason why we couldn’t do it that day. “I wasn’t allowed to go to the funeral. For years I had no idea whether she was buried or cremated.” The trauma around the incident so early in his young life would have repercussions as he got older – a sometimes troubled childhood, a short temper and bouts of depression. He adds: “More than 40 years on, the fact that I wasn’t allowed to grieve properly still seems crazy to me. I was angry about it for years. a

“On the 20th anniversary of her death, I was having an angst-ridden time and went back to the crematorium. I just sat in the wood and cried my eyes out.” It may explain, to an extent, his desire to perform on the stage – especially in comedy. He admits he started in it “for the applause and the attention” but that, like the classic tears of a clown, he “had been very unhappy for years”. Eventually after chatting to fellow comic on the circuit at the time, Jo Brand – a former psychiatric nurse from Tunbridge Wells – he got some counselling which helped him to cope with the scars of his mother’s loss. Not that his inner turmoil showed on stage. Just three years after that first performance in Whitstable, he was named Time Out magazine’s Best Young Comic, winning the Edinburgh Festival Critics’ Award for Comedy in 1994. His reputation gathering steam, it was perhaps ironic that his big break and the moment he was catapulted into household name status was through a relatively straight role as that of Jonathan Creek in the BBC drama of the same name. Starring initially alongside Caroline Quentin and later Sheridan Smith, the tight scripts, gentle humour and intriguing storylines made it a big hit with a strong following. He swiftly became a regular face on panel shows – culminating in 2001 by securing the role of team © Tony Briggs

captain on QI, the razor-sharp, informative, BBC2 quiz show. Although he admits he nearly pulled out of that following the BBC’s decision to shelve his popular chef comedy Whites after just one series. Looking back, he reflects: “They killed it after one series. Totally bizarre. I nearly quit QI over it. I thought they were canning Whites because they had me doing another show. “I asked, ‘Is that a factor? Can anyone give me a straight answer on that? If it is a factor, I’d rather quit QI. Will I get cast as anything else? Because QI is never off air. What if someone wanted to cast me as a serial killer, and I’d be perfect for it?’ I worried about that for a bit, and then I came to my senses. But I was quite burnt, I think everyone was quite burnt.” But while his professional life may have had some ups and downs, his personal life is now far more settled. He met the writer Katie Maskell in 2005 and two years later they were married. Today they have two children – a daughter aged six and a son aged four. So has being a parent changed him; helped ease some of those agonies he suffered? “When you have kids, they become your focus. Life becomes far more precious. “Now I’m a father, I imagine what it would be like to lose my wife to leukaemia and my two kids having to grow up without their mum. That’s the position my father was in 40 years ago.

“These days I have a huge amount of sympathy for what he had to cope with. I don’t judge him, because I know he did his best.” mmm

he odds were great; our margins small; the stakes infinite”. So wrote fellow historians after the event. In order for Adolf Hitler to carry out his plan to invade Britain, known as ‘Operation Sealion’, the fighters of the Royal Air Force had to be neutralised. Since the beginning of July 1940, it had been a daily struggle between Fighter Command and the Luftwaffe. Despite the insistence of Reichmarshall Hermann Goering when reporting to Hitler that the RAF had been cleared from the skies above Britain, nothing was further from the truth. Such was the planning of Air Vice-Marshal Hugh Dowding and his commanders that reserves were always found. After the clearance of some early morning mist, the weather for Sunday September 15th, 1940 dawned clear and bright. As the morning wore on the sun rose in a blue sky as people prepared to go to church or just to walk in the autumn sunshine, much the same as they did on August 18th. Across

T

the Channel on the German held French airfields, preparations were going on to assemble a great armada of bombers and fighters which it was hoped would bring the RAF to its knees. At the underground operations room for No. 11 Group situated at RAF Uxbridge, the night shift were leaving whilst the early morning shift took over. This room was the heart of Fighter Commands strategy in winning this particular battle. On a raised platform overlooking the large SE map table in the centre were the controllers who gave instructions to the airfields in Kent that came under the umbrella of No. 11 Group. These were Biggin Hill, West Malling, Lympne, Hawkinge, Gravesend and Manston. A team of RAF women were tasked with moving the counters when the instructions from the radar stations and observer corps were received through their headsets. Depending on the position of the counters, the controllers could then scramble the squadrons based at the airfields. It was this system that was to prove infallible.  HISTORY FEATURE

58 mmm

By 11am the room was busy with activity as plots from the various radar stations situated around the SE coast indicated that a very large formation of enemy aircraft were assembling over the French coast. Fifteen minutes later, the controllers contacted RAF Duxford in Cambridgeshire instructing them to get the Duxford wing airborne ready to meet the bombers over the Channel. The scene was repeated minutes later when Biggin Hill, Northolt, Kenley and Hornchurch were told to scramble their Hurricanes and Spitfires. In all 21 squadrons were taking to the air. As the German armada of Dornier 17s and Heinkel IIIs escorted by Messerschmitt 109s and 110s left the French coast the Chain Home radar stations at Fairlight near Hastings, Ventnor on the Isle of Wight and Dover and the men of the land based Observer Corps were sending details of the enemy aircraft to Bentley Priory and Uxbridge. Most of the formation were from Luftflotte 2 of Kampfgeschwader 76 operating from Beauvais and Cormeilles. As they crossed the English coastline at Ramsgate the ME109s were attacked by Spitfires from Biggin Hill followed by the Hurricanes of 253 and 504 Squadron who went for the bomber stream. As the air raid sirens in Kent began to wail shortly after 11.30am, many people rushed to the Anderson shelters built in the back gardens whilst others being

curious, just stood and looked up to the sky. Only at the last moment would they venture into a shelter. The fighters met the enemy aircraft as they crossed Kent and Sussex and within minutes the sky was full of aircraft exhaust trails as the conflict began. By midday the area around the two counties was littered with wrecked aircraft of both air forces. In London Buckingham Palace was the recipient of several bombs which dropped on the immaculate lawns and on the Queen’s private apartments. Luckily no members of the Royal family were at home. With the enemy raiders being attacked by more than 160 Hurricanes and Spitfires, many of them just dropped their bombs at random causing dreadful damage and loss of life throughout Kent. Sadly between 11.50am and 12.20pm eight RAF fighters were shot down by the enemy. Pilot Officer G L Doutrepont was a member of No. 229 Squadron flying from RAF Wittering when he was attacked by ME109s over Sevenoaks. After a ferocious dogfight his Hurricane crashed into Staplehurst railway station, a plaque on the station now reminding us that it was here that a life was lost. There were many others who were to lose their lives during this first raid. As the remainder of the enemy aircraft turned for home having dropped their bombs on London and Kent, the next raid was plotted forming up in France. Three waves of Dorniers and Heinkels 

totalling 150 aircraft together with fighter escort crossed the Channel at around 2pm. This time most of the bombs were dropped on East London as the enemy met with a force of 13 British squadrons. Ferocious dogfights were taking place over Kent with around nine RAF fighters being shot down. Against a numerically superior Luftwaffe the British squadrons fought for the survival of the country. What we lacked in numbers of fighters we gained in the quality of our Hurricanes, Spitfires and Boulton Paul Defiants and the skill of our pilots and ground crews. Long into the afternoon the battles raged as a last attempt was made by the Luftwaffe to clear the RAF from the skies and allow a seaborne invasion to go ahead. The Prime Minister, Winston Churchill living at nearby Chartwell, chose to pay one of his frequent visits to the operations room on this particular day. Noticing the intense atmosphere and the red lights change as squadrons were scrambled, called to refuel and re-arm and scrambled again time after time, he asked of Air Vice-Marshal Park, the commander of No. 11 Group, ‘what reserves have we?’.The answer came back ‘none Sir’. It is said that with this answer, Churchill looked very grave indeed. As evening approached the county of Kent counted the cost of such a battering. Although London was the prime target for most of the attacks, many bombs

had been dropped in haste demolishing property and causing chaos within the county. Yet throughout the raids on this day, just one civilian was reported dead in Kent. On Monday September 16th, 1940, the Daily Telegraph headlines told it all: ‘ 175 RAIDERS DOWN – ONE IN TWO DESTROYED – RAF LOSE 30’. It continued that ‘the mass attack on London and the south east had been smashed’. Though slightly exaggerated, it was a victory for the RAF. Although the Battle of Britain was to continue until late October, Hitler knew that victory in the sky would never be achieved by the Luftwaffe, despite the assurances from his commander-in-chief, Hermann Goering, that it would be. As the autumn and winter nights began to draw in, the proposed invasion of Britain was postponed several times until it was obvious it would never take place. Operation ‘Sealion’ was dead never to be resurrected. The battle was won by young men whom Churchill called ‘the Few’ and Lord Dowding called ‘his chicks’. Together with the ground crews who maintained the aircraft and the women of the Women’s Auxiliary Air Force who worked in the operations rooms, Sunday September 15th, 1940 was a day to remember and forever would be known as ‘Battle of Britain Day’. Soft furnishings

TAKING CARE OF

What are the best Ways to take care of soft furnishings?

mmm finds out! ecause of the variations of fabrics and fibres used in their construction and the reticence of many manufacturers to sensibly label their upholstery products, it often takes a professional cleaner to properly identify the most appropriate cleaning methods and products but the following will help extend the useful life of your upholstery. Vacuum at least once a week to remove grit that

B

INTERIOR FEATURE

can cause abrasion, and be sure to dust vacuum the top surfaces as often as possible. Professional cleaning is the best way to revitalize soiled fabric, but regular maintenance will help to prolong its condition. Aggressive brushing can damage some fabrics but a soft-bristled vacuum cleaner dusting brush, or the small upholstery/curtain tool supplied with most vacuum cleaners should be alright. Reverse the cushions each week after vacuuming.

mmm 63

Rearrange the furniture occasionally this can help to even out wear of the cushions, as there are often favoured locations within a room for such activities as watching television, reading etc. This will similarly affect carpet wear. Cushions and pillows filled with down or similar cushioning material should be hand-fluffed and reversed regularly to retain their original softness and resiliency. Avoid over-exposure to strong daylight - Ultraviolet light can bleach at an alarming rate and can also cause degeneration of some fibres. Though atmospheric pollution can cause the same damage, sunlight is more easily avoided. Pets and small children can damage and accelerate wear, as can metal zips and studs on clothing. New denim can transfer a lot of indigo dye and on lightcoloured fabrics the result can be hard to rectify.

D.I.Y FABRIC CLEANING

Generally the best advice is to blot spills as soon as possible and apply a clean white towel or similar, folded into a pad and place in close contact with the spot to draw the spillage from the fabric and padding. Fabric protectors will help hold liquid spills on the surface for a while, giving you more time to react, but do not think of them as armour-plating - they are too often over-sold, but nevertheless worthwhile. Finally, care of your furniture should be an ongoing process - not just something that happens for the first month. So happy cleaning! Zig zag teal bath towels available from House of Fraser

FRUIT & VEGETABLES Growing your own get active in your garden

and save money

ruit and vegetables are a good source of many vitamins and minerals, yet most of us don’t eat enough of them. People who eat lots of fruit and vegetables are less likely to develop chronic diseases such as heart disease, stroke and some cancers. That’s why it’s important to remember to have your 5 a day, and include a variety of different fruit and vegetables when you do your weekly shop. But there is another way to get more fruit and vegetables into your kitchen. Growing your own ensures you get the freshest pick of the crop, and could also save you money. Gardening is a good way to be more physically active. It also may help to relieve stress and improve your mental wellbeing. Getting children involved can be a good way to encourage them to eat more fruit and vegetables and try different varieties. It’s easier than you think, and you can do it even if you don’t have a garden or plot of land. a

JOBS TO DO IN SEPTEMBER SOWING AND PLANTING Fruit • Continue planting new strawberry beds. Vegetables • Continue to sow vegetables for overwintering, to mature next spring, including: turnip, spinach, winter lettuce, Oriental vegetables. • Plant overwintering onion sets. • Spring cabbages that were sown last month are probably ready for planting out. Cover them with horticultural fleece or netting to stop the pigeons shredding them. • Sow green manures such as crimson clover and Italian ryegrass to act as a soil improver and to cover bare areas. When dug in, they conserve nutrients and improve soil texture. PRUNING AND TRAINING Fruit • Finish tying in shoots on wall-trained fan trees. • Cut back old canes of blackberries and hybrid berries after fruiting and tie in the new canes. • Prune blackcurrants. • Spur prune kiwifruits after harvest. Problems • Watch tomatoes for blossom end rot, and other ripening problems. • Be sure to clear debris created when lifting potatoes, and take care not to damage the tubers. • Control against bacterial canker at the end of the month. • Protect grapes from wasps. GARDENING FEATURE

General Care Fruit • Harvest top fruit such as apples and pears. look for fruit falling under the tree (windfalls) to indicate which apples are ready, but also assess taste and texture to determine whether they are ready for harvesting. • Quince and medlars are also picked now. • Finish tying in shoots on wall-trained fan trees. • Order cold stored strawberry runners for delivery in winter. • Order new fruit trees, canes and bushes. • Continue to provide support for heavily-laden fruit trees and bush branches. Vegetables • When asparagus foliage turns brown, it is time to cut it down. Take care of the spines, and give the plants a good mulch afterwards. • Irregular watering can lead to problems with blossom end rot in tomatoes, splitting of root vegetables and flower abortion in runner beans. Help to prevent this by watering well during dry spells. • Keep up with watering winter squash and pumpkins - this will prevent their growth from being checked. Use stored rainwater wherever possible. • Celery can be earthed-up for the final time this month, leaving just a tuft of foliage sticking out of the trench or collar in order to blanch the stems.

Local News KeNt BUSINeSS NeWS JACK WILLS TO OpEN AT MAIdSTONE’S FREMLIN WALK Jack Wills – the British “university crowd” brand – is cementing its place on the best British high streets with a new letting at M&G Real Estate’s Fremlin Walk scheme in central Maidstone. The retailer has secured a six month trial as it extends its portfolio of over 80 stores internationally to select the best locations for further market penetration. The 3,500 sq ft store will be its fourth Kent location, with Bluewater, Tunbridge Wells and Canterbury stores already performing well. Developed on the former Fremlin’s Brewery site, the 350,000 sq ft open air, single level scheme is anchored by a 100,000 sq ft House of Fraser. The asset comprises 50 tenant units and a 760-space car park. The majority of units are let to leading national brands including Superdry, Zara, Top Shop, H&M, Boots and JD, establishing the

scheme as the region’s leading retail destination. M&G Real Estate is implementing an active management strategy to further develop the tenant line-up at Fremlin Walk as Scott Linard, director – asset management, M&G Real Estate, explains: “Prime retail destinations in major towns – like the county town of Maidstone – remain a key target for acquisitive retail operators and Fremlin Walk benefits from a reputation as the core fashion retailing hotspot for the area. This offers the town good prospects for rental growth, which drove our investment decision last year and is guiding our ongoing strategy for the asset. “With a series of other lease negotiations advancing fast, that would take the scheme to fully let, we look forward to announcing more news from Fremlin Walk over the coming weeks.”

LOCAL SpARTAN ON THE ROAd TO RECOVERY ANd pROVING AGE IS JUST A NUMBER Ian Banks-Schofield, a 44 year old military man from Kent, is preparing to prove that age is just a number as he takes on a Spartan fitness challenge this year despite a tough road to recovery following a serious car accident he was involved in 12 years ago. “The vehicle I was driving was hit by another car, spun 360 degrees and then rolled four times across the motorway and down the embankment.” Ian explains: “I suffered bad damage to my back and was unable to stand up straight for two years. It took a full two years to recover from injuries and I didn’t get back into exercise for another 10.” Ian continues: “I’m not a natural runner, and find just pounding the pavement for miles incredibly boring. I needed a challenging event, something to push me, and that’s when I discovered obstacle course races. It was this that gave me the motivation I needed to get fitter, healthier and challenge myself physically again. I came across the Reebok Spartan Races, signed up and took part in my first two races last year as part of my new journey.” As well as building up his strength, Ian started small with his fitness: “I began walking, then running short distances. I started getting off at one or two tube stops before my destination and bought an activity tracker to keep me on target to reach my goal. My partner and family were extremely supportive, and my brother and nephew will be event racing with me at Ashburnham Place.” Having well and truly got the competitive bug

back, Ian has already completed the Spartan Sprint (5km, 15 obstacles), and Spartan Super (13km, 20 obstacles) in Rome and Madrid and has set his sights closer to home for the Spartan Sprint, Super and Beast (20km, 25 obstacles) races set for back-to-back weekends at Ashburnham Place, East Sussex on the 18th, 19th and 27th September. Not content to stop there, Ian has also signed up to finish the season by racing the Spartan Beast in Barcelona, October 10th, followed by the Beast in France, October 17th. “For many people it’s the physical and mental challenge of an outdoors obstacle course race that appeals.” Ian explains: “But for devoted racers, completing all three of the Spartan distances in one season allows them a place in the coveted ‘Trifecta’ club. With the number of races I’m doing, I’m going one step further and completing what is a Triple Trifecta!”

KENT LIFE HERITAGE FARM pARK WINS AWARd FOR INSpIRATIONAL EdUCATION pROGRAMME Kent Life Heritage Farm Park, near Maidstone, has picked up its third award of the year, this time in recognition of its education programme. The popular family attraction, which is also a working farm, has won a Sandford Award, an independently judged, quality assured assessment of education programmes at heritage sites, museums, archives and collections across the British Isles. The award scheme is managed by the Heritage Education Trust in partnership with Bishop Grosseteste University, Lincoln. Judge Irene Davies, who assessed Kent Life’s education programme while observing schools that visited the site, said: “Kent Life Heritage Farm Park is a lovely little microcosm of Kent rural life. This is its unique feature and all the schools visiting on the day praised this and gave it as the reason for booking a visit. LOCAL NEWS

“The atmosphere is relaxed with children working and playing happily. All aspects of country life, from the village to the farm, are easily accessible and the children can immerse themselves in the past.” This is the third award that Kent Life has won so far this year. In April, it was named winner in the Best Customer Service category at the prestigious Museum and Heritage Awards for Excellence 2015, dubbed the Oscars of the museum world; and in June, it was named Attraction of the Year by its parent company, Continuum Attractions. In the last two years it has also picked up gold at Tourism South East’s Beautiful South Awards for Excellence 2012-13 for Outstanding Customer Service; a coveted Certificate of Excellence Award from TripAdvisor; and a ‘highly commended’ in the Best in Education category of the National Farm Attractions Network.

Medway businesses can now apply for grants of up to £3,000 to get better broadband following the news that Kent has been included in the £40m national Broadband Connection Voucher Scheme. “This is really good news for Medway businesses and another big step in getting better broadband connections across the area,” says Susan Jennings, partner and head of corporate at law firm Furley Page, based at The Historic Dockyard Chatham. “The vouchers are not just for those businesses struggling with connectivity, they can be used to boost superfast broadband to even greater speeds or they can help those businesses who are struggling to access better services. The broadband scheme, funded by government and administered by Kent County Council, covers

the costs of upgrading the connection allowing businesses to start reaping the benefits of faster speeds and better connectivity. The grant pays for the installation costs, while businesses pay any VAT charged and the monthly line rental to the service provider. The scheme is part of the Government’s Broadband Delivery UK and is a national programme running across 50 cities offering a total of £40m. This comes in addition to the £50m of funding BDUK, KCC and BT has made available in Kent to help the wider community access better broadband, including businesses and residents in a rural area. CHILdREN CHOOSE FUTURE STREET NAMES AT THE ORCHARdS Pupils from Allington Primary School have had their say in the naming of new streets at Barratt’s brand new development in Maidstone. The youngsters were invited to put forward their ideas for street names at The Orchards as part of a competition, organised by the housebuilder. Suggestions included: Nightingale Road, Bluebell Way and Snowdrop Close - and they were chosen because of their reflection on the natural world and to fit in with the theme of The Orchards. “We were hugely impressed by the creativity of the children taking part,” said Barratt Sales and Marketing Director Pam Reardon. “It was important to us that we involved local youngsters in the future of nearby streets and how they will be known for many years to come. And the response we had was wonderful. “Now our winners can sit back and watch the brand new homes take shape at The Orchards knowing they have had their say in the addresses of future residents here.” LOCAL NEWS

cotney is not one but two houses. At the top of the hill is the new house, designed by Anthony Salvin in Elizabethan style and built in 1837 for Edward Hussey III, who took the ‘picturesque’ style as his inspiration. At the bottom of the valley are the romantic ruins of a medieval castle and moat. This is the focal point of the celebrated gardens featuring spectacular displays of rhododendrons, azaleas and kalmia in May/June with trees and shrubs providing autumnal colour. The estate is open all year, offering a variety of walks through beautiful parkland, woodland and farmland.

The house was built from the sandstone quarried from the grounds of the Old Castle. It is positioned to overlook the Castle and estate and the garden was also designed and created at the same time. This meant that all the three elements: house, garden and estate would work as one in creating a perfect picturesque country home. The wood panelling and some of the significant furniture was also designed specifically for the house by Salvin which gives a lovely flow of continuity to the home. However the Hussey family were great collectors and hoarders of everything, so you will

see many influences from different generations as you walk around. From the early 18th century, British landscape gardeners had been creating gardens inspired by pictures, but by 1800 a backlash had set in. Critics considered the grassy vistas designed by Capability Brown too smooth and tidy. Scotney’s picturesque garden is a last fling in this style of gardening. The garden is like a landscape painting with drama and romance. It has naturalistic planting which is seemingly untouched by human hand. The cloudlike planting of rhododendrons and azaleas create a WHAT’S ON AND NATIONAL TRUST

a fairytale feel, with the ruins of the Old Castle at its centre. Wisteria and old English roses adorn its sandstone walls, whilst the surrounding herbaceous beds are always throwing out new colours throughout the seasons. Scotney is a gem; the views from the winding path down the hillside gardens prepare you for the Old Castle, but it is only when you walk around the moated site that it really hits you how beautiful it is. Some of that is forced; its a deliberate attempt by Edward Hussey to create a picturesque landscape, but in this case it works so well that you don’t mind if Hussey accentuated the ruined state of the medieval castle and Elizabethan manor for artistic effect. It’s rare that you will see a more wonderfully romantic English castle like Scotney Castle. The estate covers over 700 acres with wonderful viewpoints and vistas. The new house is also open to the public, where you can also learn about the history of the property and see its rooms set out in a victorian style. There are many events and activities ongoing at the castle, making it well worth a visit for a terrific day out especially for the whole family.

Emily Stone Copper Creatures, Cliftonville, Margate 10th - 24th October mily Stone creates her Copper Creatures from her workshop near Dover in Kent. Having studied art at Canterbury and then Hereford, in 2001 she started sculpting full-time, enjoying the versatile nature of copper; creating tactile forms of the essence of the subject. She has exhibited widely around Britain and since 2007 has been artist in residence at The Salutation Gardens in Sandwich. She derives enormous satisfaction from seeing people drawn to touch, stroke, or even be prickled by her creatures. The copper can be coloured and lacquered to keep those colours, which provides stunning contrasts as it ages, giving each piece an extra sense of character and spirit. Tarot reading for September birthdays:

Star Signs that fall under September are: Virgo (24th August - 23rd September) and Libra (24th September – 23rd October) A typical Virgo character is very organised. They like to plan ahead and they will always have an agenda with any situation that arises both financially and emotionally. This doesn’t make them a bad person just a person who has a keen sense of self-preservation A typical Libran character likes things to be fair and balanced in all aspects of their lives. They can be very easy to get on with as long as you don’t mind making decisions, as sometimes it takes them far too long to come to a conclusion. When they have made up their mind they can be very stubborn as they have dissected and looked into every part of the plan beforehand. LOVE Virgo - You will be drawing away from being too public with your emotions at this time. Instead you are going within yourself to find out how you feel and to build up your own self confidence. This month you are taking more control of your emotional life and plans are being made, so enjoy yourself. Libra - You are able to go with the flow a little more at the moment due to a great deal of kindness coming your way. You feel as though you have been controlled a little too much in the recent past and this is now evening out now and you feel happier and more respected by your loved ones. Finances / Work Virgo - You are shielding yourself due to confusion in a work or financial situation. You are not feeling as confident as you want to be. I can see that you should feel better as this looks very lucrative and things will work out in your favour. I see that you need to sow the seeds first though and you will need to be patient for a month or so. You will then feel the confidence that you should have now. Libra - Financial security is definitely felt at this time and you are feeling blessed with the same kindness as you have felt within your emotional life. A character close to you who hides their true emotions behind a smile is around you. I see travel plans and big wishes linked around this person and yourself. Keys will be shown to you but then taken away again for later on.

Sagittarius 23rd Nov – 21st Dec Love/Family: Life goes on around you as you are left feeling a little lost and confused. There have been so many changes that your head is spinning.
