Welcome What a busy month we’ve had as we’ve made the most of the last throes of summer. First the Olympics gripped us all and wasn’t it an enormous success for Team GB and indeed Britain as a whole? As if that wasn’t enough the British Transplant Games were hosted in Medway at the end of the month - did anyone enjoy the opportunity to cheer on these brave athletes on our doorstep? And now we have our final feast of sport as the awe inspiring Paralympians complete their time competing in the Olympic arena. But sport wasn’t the only achievement - our talented young people celebrated some truly impressive A-level and GCSE results that saw Kent bucking a national trend. Our young people are a truly talented group that we should all be proud of and we hope they’re as pleased with their efforts as we are. Of course, we can’t mention exam results without remembering that this month is the start of the
new academic year. Yes, another new year begins for the young people and the rest of us go back to our term time routines - even if you don’t have children it’s hard to miss the change to traffic in the morning! Here at mmm we can’t believe it’s September already, where does the time go? This issue we have a variety of features to help you relax and forget about time passing. Fashion guru Laura Bailey shares her top ten tips for ensuring you’re always looking your best, even when forced to wrap up warm. We also bring you a selection of travel ideas, home tips and a look at some impressive businesses - there’s a real mix of interests to keep you entertained as the nights draw in. And, of course, we celebrate a talented young person with our cover feature on young singer Pixie Lott, a young starlet who has no trouble getting herself heard. Why not follow in her footsteps and get yourself heard? Write to us and tell us what you think of Maidstone, Medway and anything else that captures your imagination. We look forward to hearing from you.

HERE are some people who are just destined for success, pre-ordained to emerge from the shadows and enjoy their time in the spotlight. And for Victoria Lott it became apparent she was going to be a bit special not long after she learned to walk. Already nicknamed Pixie by her mum due to being “such a tiny, cute baby” it quickly became apparent to both her parents and onlookers that she had a musical talent pulsing through her veins. Because little Pixie Lott was destined for great things.
Getting her big break at the age of just 14, Pixie Lott burst onto the music scene and grabbed the world’s attention thanks to her amazing voice and bubbly enthusiasm
“People would hear me signing at school, or at family parties, and go up to my mum and tell her she should do something with me,” the singer explains, “that's when we realised I had a good singing voice.” The question for her parents
was what to do next. The family lived in Chislehurst, deepest Kent commuter belt, the young Pixie being raised on a diet of her parents' record collection, featuring the likes of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. “My mum told me I'd been singing

a Lott of talent
since I was in my cot. But the funny thing is that I'm from the least musical family ever. “I certainly wasn't born with musical genes.” Few can have imagined that little Pixie would follow the divas she once sang along to to the very top of the British charts – scoring a string of number one hits and selling more than a million copies of her debut album. It all seems a long time since, at the tender age of five, she was taken to stretch her vocal talents each weekend at the Italia Conti Associates Saturday School. There she would discover that
not only did she have a very real talent, but that she enjoyed performing, loved being on the stage and loved singing. Her dreams of becoming a pop star were born. Pixie had enjoyed a comfortable upbringing, her father a stockbroker and her mother able to devote her time to raising her family. They would enjoy family holidays abroad and skiing during the winter. By the time she was 11 she was enrolling – on a scholarship – at London's prestigious Italia Conti stage school – the starting point for so many embarking on a career in show business.
She explained: “To get into the school I had to be able to dance and act, so my mum took me every night after school to different dance lessons to make sure I would pass the audition. Thank goodness it all paid off.” However, this only focused young Pixie when it came to where she wanted her career to go. She explains: “The thing is I really love the pop side of things, and Italia Conti is definitely focused on musical theatre, which I wasn't so keen on.” By the time she was 13, her family decided to uproot from Kent, relocating to Brentwood a

a in Essex. But this did not stop her relentless pursuit of success. While at stage school she found herself landing roles in the likes of West End show Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at the London Palladium, at 14 she was recording vocals with former Pink Floyd superstar Roger Waters on his Ca Ira opera, and appearing in the BBC's celebration of the Sound of Music. But her big break lay in the pages of an industry newspaper. Explains Pixie: “There was an advert in The Stage and it read: Looking for next hot diva. The age bracket was for 15-16. But I was only 14 at the time. My mum wasn't at all keen on it and thought it might be a big con. But I insisted she take me. So I went along to the audition, where there was an enormous queue of girls, and just lied. I told them I was 16. All those taking part had to impress the man on the hunt for the next big thing. That man, David Sonenberg, liked her so much he became her manager. From there on in it was something of a rollercoaster for the youngster. While still studying for her a

a GCSEs, she found herself attracting attention from songwriters in both the UK and the States. Her manager got her to record songs and before she knew it she was flying out to the US as her profile as a hotly-tipped star in the making spread. Just a year later LA Reid, the Grammy-award winning producer and songwriter, flew to London to meet the teenager after hearing one of her demos.
Explains Pixie: “When my mum said he was flying in I didn't even know who he was. “But I was still at school so I had to pretend to have a dentist's appointment so I could sing for him at his hotel. My school didn't realise what I was doing.” Reid was suitably impressed and Pixie was soon flown over to the US to work with a number of songwriters. But her reputation would see her and Reid split before her debut album was a

a released as a bidding war for the schoolgirl saw Mercury Records clinch her signature and with it the rights to her first album. School had to be told. And she left – but not before a string of straight As in her GCSEs. Dumb blonde was never something you could level at her. Hugely, overpoweringly ambitious and confident, well, there was more of a case to answer. Her first single Mama Do was released in June 2009; Pixie was just 18. It flew to the top of the UK charts. The potential was turning into reality. Her second single Boys and Girls followed the Mama Do route to the top three months later. Debut album Turn It Up would sell more than a million copies and spawn five consecutive top 20 singles. Pixie elevated herself onto pop's top table and last year unleashed her second album – Young Foolish Happy – with lead-off single All About Tonight going straight in at number one. It will not be the biggest surprise to learn she is keen on pursuing some acting roles, while she even managed to make an appearance at the Olympic Games in London last month, performing at the North Greenwich Arena – the O2 Arena under regular circumstances – to entertain the audience at the gymnastics. Remarkably, Pixie Lott is still only 21. She has achieved so much already – we suspect her appetite for success remains undiminished. mmm

Model and writer Laura Bailey shares some style tips Balenciaga's comic-print sweatshirts are a great purchase for autumn. Keep your eyes out for the vintage equivalent - I stumbled on a basket full of 70s classics sweatshirts on Portobello Road yesterday. Mixing print and brocade is a favourite look of mine. I often pair my favourite old Miu Miu print skirts with a bit of Stella McCartney brocade and a pie-crust blouse. My classic Burberry trench coat, which I bought years ago in New York, is one of my first 'grown-up' purchases and is a staple for autumn/winter rainy days. I like to wear it combined with a scarf in my hair as I walk in the park, channelling Ali McGraw or Lauren Hutton. I love to wear a hat in winter, and my old battered black Phillip Treacy trilby is a trusty favourite. This season, I plan to treat myself to a wide-rimmed, floppy hat, which is an effortlessly glamorous accessory and goes with everything. I like to mix a bit of sportswear into my look, such as a sweatshirt with a pair of hi-top trainers. It gives any outfit a contemporary, laid-back look. Now, thanks to Stella McCartney, old favourites such as blue mascara and dazzle dust are making a comeback. These were probably the first items of make-up I ever bought back in the day, and I'm (almost) ready to go there again. Definitely a big look for autumn. I've always been a bit afraid of purple, but thanks to Christopher Kane's autumn/winter show, and Chanel’s darkest indigo nail varnish, I’ll definitely be embracing the dark side this autumn. Cropped boyish trousers with a vintage print blouse are a winning combo, teamed with a brogue or lace-up boots. Celine, Margaret Howell and Stella

McCartney are my favourite designers for trousers. I love borrowing my boyfriend’s clothes. A few items of (extra-small) menswear, such as a little blazer or an oversized shirt, create a really sharp, defined effect. I'm even stealing my son's navy school socks now, too. I find myself drawn to the very English Miss Marple or Miss Moneypenny silhouette. You can create this look with an A-line skirt and little tweed jacket, finish it off by sweeping your hair up into a twisted bun. Erdem and Miu Miu both have a great selection of sensible skirts this season. n Laura Bailey is contributing editor to British Vogue and cultural ambassador for the British Fashion Council. Laura is a brand ambassador for a number of popular designer names. She is also an ambassador for McArthurGlen’s Ashford Designer Outlet Fashion Month campaign. Throughout September McArthurGlen’s 250 plus fashion brands across all seven UK centres (including McArthurGlen Ashford!) will receive more than 1,000 new pieces daily – meaning there will be plenty of enviable fashion steals that tick the AW12 trend boxes. During the month-long campaign, Ashford Designer Outlet will hold exclusive style evenings hosted by style consultant Deborah Eastlake taking place on 13th, 20th and 27th September. Shoppers will also have the chance to pick up one of the limited edition Designer Outlet Fashion Bags throughout the month – exclusively designer by Holly Fulton.

Travel tips from your Local Award Winning Travel Agency Beating jet lag . . .
Jet lag is worse when you move from west to east because the body finds it harder to adapt to a shorter day than a longer one. Here’s a couple of suggestions you may wish to try: n If you do not eat on return overnight flights from the States until you return home for up to 16 hours from departure, it helps with jetlag – this has been tried and tested by Linda from our Baldwins Travel Maidstone office... and it works! n Including a stopover in your flight will make it easier to adjust to the time change, and you'll be less tired when you arrive. Take advantage of any short airport transits to have a refreshing shower or swim in the terminal, if possible. n Dehydration can intensify the effects of jet lag, especially after sitting in a dry aeroplane cabin for many hours. Avoid alcoholic and caffeine drinks (such as coffee, tea and cola), which can disturb sleep. n During your flight, try to create the right conditions when preparing for sleep. Eyeshades and earplugs may help you sleep. Regular exercise during the day may also help you sleep, but avoid strenuous exercise immediately before bedtime. n The cycle of light and dark is one of the most important factors in setting the body’s internal clock. Exposure to daylight at the destination will usually help you adapt to the new time zone faster. We hope this gives you a few ideas on how to beat jet lag and make the most of your holiday!
The land of
the eternal blue
The beautiful coastal resort of Bodrum, known as ‘the land of the eternal blue’, has everything you could wish for in a perfect summer escape. Maryanne Cook, Kuoni’s content editor, heads to Turkey to find out more.
34 mmm
A
S with many costal resorts, the plan on the agenda is relaxation and in Bodrum, that sense of being seems to be flowing through the very bones of the local fishermen, the shop-keepers and even the bar-tenders, such as those of Gumbet’s vibrant Bar Street. Although many live by this sense of well-being, hoteliers and their staff ensure the highest in standards of service, as
competition is getting fierce! Situated on Turkey’s southwest coast, Bodrum resides in the district of Mugla, along the turquoise waters of the Aegean Sea, where you can dive amongst sunken shipwrecks, kayak, wakeboard or Jet Ski along the lapping waters, hold on for dear life on banana boats or simply relax in the sun on a pedalo. Stay at the Rixos Premium Bodrum, one of the region’s most popular hotels for luxurious and spacious
accommodation, a fantastic range of watersports includes many of the above, as well as a wonderful collection of restaurants and bars. For the sun, sea and sand worshippers, Türkbükü offers uninterrupted views of verdant rolling hillsides, passing yachts on the azure waters and an array of high-end beach resorts, offering impeccable levels of service throughout your stay. Enjoy the Macakizi for barefoot beach house luxury or the Divan Bodrum Luxury
Hotel for a private beach with jetty and peaceful views over Türkbükü. Turkey itself is bursting with history, culture and a deep sense of pride as traditions pass freely through generations. The remains of Bodrum’s history can be seen in Bodrum Marina, where you will find the Castle of the Knights of St. John, built with the stones that were once a part of The Mausoleum of Halicarnasus, known as one of the seven wonders of the ancient world.
The Marina is also home to a collection of quaint cobbled streets, each leading to a string of contemporary cafés, where you can stop to watch the world go by, alongside small shops selling a range of leather goods, silver and clothing: an ideal spot to practice your haggling skills, but don’t be offended if some shopkeepers won’t play along! Tourism is Bodrum’s main source of income, and our disposable cash is an important part of the Turkish
mmm 35
economy. Be sure to visit the Marina on a clear night, where you can see the lights on the Greek island of Kos flickering in the distance. Stay at the Marmara for spectacular views over the Marina. Architectural characteristics of Bodrum are part of its rich history: no building can exceed two floors in height, nor should it be any other colour than white, taking great influence from Greece. Because of this, the area is expanding, allowing the larger hotels to cover more ground, making the region seem a lot bigger than it really is. The Aegean Sea is the source of Bodrum’s main ingredient in local cuisine: seafood. Prepared in both traditional and contemporary dishes, the amazing tastes and textures from the variety of dishes that Bodrum has to offer will never disappoint. The Kempinski Hotel Barbaros Bay offers a cool sea breeze in their al fresco restaurant, offering a fantastic variety of Mezes followed by delicious locally sourced produce. Travel a short distance to the traditional fishing village of Gümüşlük to get a taste of homemade cooking. Not only popular for its cooking skills, Gümüşlük is also known for its handicrafts, in particular, intricately decorated lanterns made from the hollowed skin of a butternut squash. Listen out for the locals describing these novelties as decorated cucumbers! So when you’re struggling for an all-round destination for couples, friends and family, think beautiful Bodrum: one of Turkey’s few remaining resorts to maintain its traditional history, beauty and golden sands. Tell me more… Rixos Premium Bodrum is a luxurious lifestyle resort with its own private island, exclusive jetty and private beach. There are six restaurants, a Mojito bar, nightclub and a beautiful pool; plus, The Royal Spa is the epitome of luxury with an indoor pool, Turkish bath and Jacuzzi. There’s a diving school, watersports, aerobics and yoga, plus kids’ club and entertainment. mmm

Second Coming beliefs
A 46 mmm
LITTLE over 100 years ago, if you had cast your gaze towards Chatham Hill there, perched above the town, you would have seen the walls of a quite remarkable structure being built. It was planned to be both practical and a point of worship. A building which would attract those from around the world who shared a set of beliefs. Its roots were based in the beliefs of a woman from Devon who genuinely believed she was mentioned in the Bible and would be the mother of the Second Coming. Death would see the building work draw to a halt. It would take until the 1960s until the shell of the building was eventually demolished. This is the remarkable story of Jezreel's Tower – a folly in the true sense of the word. Its origins are to be found in the story of Joanna Southcott, a woman
born in 1750 and raised in a small village in Devon. A domestic servant, at the age of 42 her religious life would change forever when she declared herself in possession of supernatural gifts. These were delivered by a series of prophecies she dictated, all in rhyme. When she then declared herself the woman mentioned in Revelations in
the Bible (“and she brought forth a man child, who was to rule all nations with a rod of iron”) she found herself collecting a number of followers. By the time she entered her sixties she lived in London and had tens of thousands who believed in her. At the age of 64 she declared she was pregnant and the Messiah was her child.
mmm 47
Her due date came and went, no child appeared. She was declared dead two months later; her followers only releasing her body after it began to decay – convinced she would rise from the dead. Her death in 1814 did not bring an end to her cult, however. Her followers, known as Southcottians, continued. Key to their beliefs was that Southcott had trusted them with a box of prophecies which were only to be opened after her death, only at the time of national crisis and in the presence of all 24 of the Church of England's bishops; Joanna Southcott's Box. Meanwhile, in 1851 James White came kicking and screaming into the world, son of a warehouse superintendent, and, by 1875, enlisted in the British Army. He joined the 16th Regiment of Foot based in Chatham. Shortly afterwards he became hooked on the teachings of Southcott and fascinated by the box featuring the prophecies. Since her death a number of key supporters had continued to preach her message – among them John Wroe who had developed groups of supporters across the UK, including one in Chatham. Keen to learn more, White joined the Southcottian sect of Christian Israelites, calling themselves the New House of Israel. He became heavily involved, changing his name to James Jezreel and persuading followers he was a messenger of the Lord. When his military service came to an end in 1881 he opted to devote all his time and efforts to his church – and set about building a headquarters worthy of its perceived significance in his eyes. Acting, he said, on a revelation from God, he chose the commanding position of Chatham Hill. The plans were ambitious – a church at its heart, around the perimeter would be shops and accommodation for an international college using Southcott's teaching at its heart he had established in his home in Woodlands Road, Gillingham. It would be the perfect venue for the Jezreelites who now proclaimed him.
The building, initially to be a perfect cube, would rise 120ft high with engravings on the outer walls. It would stand as a shining example of what Jezreel was convinced was a major religious breakthrough. Key was a structure capable of accommodating 5,000 and protecting the followers when judgement day came and fire rained down from the heavens – hence the insistence the the building was to be made of non-combustible materials. Work was due to be complete by January 1, 1885. Unfortunately for Jezreel, however, he had fallen victim of the phrase 'do as I say, not as I preach'. Despite followers being banned from drinking, Jezreel himself was a heavy drinker and by the end of 1884 he fell ill. He would die in March 1885. Again, his followers expected his resurrection. Again, they would have their faith shaken. James Jezreel was just 45 when he died. His body buried in an
unmarked grave in Grange Road cemetery in Gillingham. His wife continued his work with the building, however, and work finally got under way in September 1885. But costs for the building were soaring and by the time she died from peritonitis in July 1888, aged just 28, the building remained incomplete. Follower numbers had dramatically dwindled too. The unfinished tower, Jezreel's Tower, or Jezreel's Folly as it was also known, would, however continue to stand into the next century. It would never be completed. It changed hands several times but was eventually demolished in 1961. As for Joanna Southcott's box, well, it is understood to remain in the possession and in a secure location of loyal followers. It is believed, however, she predicted the end of the world in 2004. mmm

Fiat
Two new Abarths unveiled
FIAT’S legendary Abarth brand has unveiled two new high-performance models to its line-up in the UK. As one of the few marques which packs an emotional clout as well as aesthetic one, the new additions form part of a shake-up of the range offered. The famous Scorpion brand has given an overhaul of the original Abarth 500 line-up and to mark the occasion two new versions of the sporting hatchback and convertible are making their way into showrooms – the 595 Turismo and the 595 Competizione. Both cars will come as standard with a 160bhp version of the
turbocharged 1.4 T-Jet engine. The original Abarth 500 will remain as an entry-level model, though a new colour, and extra standard equipment has been added, while the on-the-road price has been reduced. All three new versions will be available in manual form or with Abarth’s MTA (Manual Transmission Automated) semiautomatic gearbox. “When the ground-breaking Abarth 595 SS was created in 1964 it established itself as a genuine performance car and a force to be reckoned with on and off the circuits,” says Ivan Gibson, head of
Abarth in the UK. “It is therefore fitting that our two new versions revive the great 595 brand in the form of the Turismo and the Competizione. “While the Abarth 500 is positioned as an entry point for customers to gain access to the brand, the 595 models will now allow customers to progress or renew their Abarth experience and will also attract new drivers to the marque.” The Abarth 500 will be available from between £13,975 to £17,175. The Abarth 595 Turismo from £17,725 to £20,925.

Special edition IF ever you needed proof of the influence of online social networks on the biggest brands, then look no further than Citroen's latest variation
on a popular model. The Citroën C1 Connexion special edition was influenced by thousands who used an app via Facebook to configure a version of the popular car. And the French brand is boasting it is the first production car in the UK to be created in such a way. More than 24,000 configurations were submitted through Citroën’s Facebook page to create the special edition. Members of the public were invited to
visit a virtual ‘factory floor’ to choose what the model should look like and what features it should have. The final design of C1 Connexion was created from the most popular configuration. The name badge that features on the car was also designed by a Citroën Facebook fan. The C1 Connexion is on sale now with three or five doors, priced at £9,495 and £9,845 respectively. Based on the C1 1.0i 68 manual in VTR trim, the C1 Connexion will also feature 14" alloy wheels, dark tinted rear windows, Caldera Black metallic paint and Scarlet Red exterior and interior detailing.

Work starting Chatham Waters
Work is set to begin next year on transforming another part of Chatham's former dockyard area, with a £650m overhaul of a 26-acre site. Chatham Waters is the brain-child of Peel Land & Property and, after working closely with Medway Council, in July it was given the nod by planners. The scheme will provide an employment-led mixed-use redevelopment of the site of approximately 1.9 million sq ft
including a commercial heart incorporating office space, education facilities, an ‘EventCity’, and a hotel alongside apartments and townhouses, plus landscaped public areas and a foodstore. The development has the potential to create approximately 3,500 jobs. The outline planning success follows two years of discussion with Medway Council and a public consultation in September 2011, where Peel showcased plans for the regeneration of the site and met with residents to gauge the public’s opinion.
The findings from the consultation revealed 90 per cent of those questioned were in support of the scheme and more than 95 per cent were assured it would give the area a huge boost. James Whittaker, development director at Peel, said: “We’re delighted Medway Council has approved outline plans for Chatham Waters. “It will regenerate and breathe new life into a significant area of the dockland and give the region a real economic boost. We hope to start building on the site next year."

BUSINESS Spending FSB
The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has called for councils to adopt a greater understanding of procurement spend with small firms in order to help boost the local economy. Councils spend £88 billion per year on procurement. Yet with many not knowing where or what size of business they are trading with, communities are losing out according to new research from the FSB. The organisation polled all local councils to see how and where they spend their money. The survey revealed many councils indicating
that over half their procurement spend went to small and mediumsized businesses. However, of the 148 local authorities to respond, the FSB found more than a third (38 per cent) do not actively record the location of their spending and almost half (49 per cent) don't know the size of business they trade with. An FSB spokesman said: “With the average annual spend per council which responded to the poll at £185 million, they have huge spending power. “The FSB believes councils must be more aware of what they spend and how they spend it to maximise the benefits to the communities. As research shows that money spent with local businesses stays within the local economy - having positive
effects for those areas. “Effective and responsible procurement can benefit both small firms and the local economy by creating new jobs, keeping existing ones and creating new businesses. “The majority of councils claimed to have initiatives to support small businesses. But if councils want these to be effective, they need to at least know what they are doing to meet their goals. “We want to see more accurate and public recording of spend so that it can properly inform strategy and decision making. This will help embed and understand the link between procurement and local economic development.” The FSB is now calling on councils to introduce measures to
the central part of the hotel, was called Elsfield House and built in 1839 on ground which then formed part of the estate. Hollingbourne is so called from the Old English words ‘holling’ running and ‘bourne’ stream. The property’s fascinating history includes being the home to a number of significant persons from the community, as well as a number of decorated soldiers who made their names in conflicts in bygone years. By 1934 the house was owned by Thomas Cook, who had changed its name to the Great Danes Road House. From that
date onwards it has been a hotel. The original Road House consisted of the main building, two small cottages and a riding stable. After 1934 it changed hands and the Castle Bar area and rooms were added. In 1963 the Rank Organisation purchased the hotel and added a restaurant and banqueting areas, the swimming pool and 64 bedrooms. The hotel attracted many notable visitors including the Beatles, who stayed whilst filming scenes for their movie Help. The hotel was later taken over by Allied Lyons and run as an Embassy hotel until Jarvis Hotels purchased it in June 1990. In 2001 Jarvis Hotels partnered with Ramada and 10 years later, it became the Mercure Maidstone. In more recent times, famous guests have included Ant and Dec, Melinda Messenger, and Jeremy Clarkson and the Top Gear

Roger House, Kent and Medway FSB regional chairman, said: “We are pleased so many councils took part in the research. It has allowed us to build a good picture of what is going on. However, we were surprised that so many aren't being more proactive in terms of how they record their spending. “Knowing where spend is going, as well as what type of businesses are getting contracts, would help councils focus on improving their procurement processes and ultimately boost communities.”

GADGETS Logitech Skype
SKYPE’S growing popularity for video and voice calls over the internet has just received a shot in the arm with a new device which allows TVs to get into the act too. The Logitech TV Cam HD plugs into any highdefinition TV set with an HDMI input and using a Wi-fi connection picks up your web access to allow you to chat face-to-face from the comfort of your living room. Using a bundled remote controller, the Logitech TV Cam HD lets you call anyone using Skype on any

platform, whether they are on their smartphone, tablet, HDTV or computer. Just sign into Skype with your existing Skype name, or create a new account on your HDTV, and you are a few clicks away from making a Skype video call from the comfort of your couch. You can also use Skype on the Logitech TV Cam HD to call landline or mobile numbers using your account’s Skype Credit or calling subscription. Joerg Tewes, vice president of Logitech’s digital home business group: “Because of the size of the TV screen and the quality of the video, the new Logitech TV Cam HD with Skype brings a whole new social element to the living room, helping you feel like your family and friends are right there with you. It’s a transformative experience.” The device hits stores this month and will cost around £179.
NOT so long ago, if you wanted to pay for movies on your TV, Sky really was the limit. The pay-TV giant had deals in place with all the key studios and in the face of little competition comfortably held off the challenge of rival digital platforms and their smaller-scale package of on-demand and pay-per-view titles. But 2012 has seen choice expand and two players emerge on the scene who threaten Sky's dominance. And, what's more, given the embracing of different platforms, accessing movie services has never been easier or cheaper. With many homes now featuring a Playstation 3 or Xbox 360 nestled beneath the TV, or indeed a TV with a network cable connection, a couple of joystick wiggles or remote control trips through the menu list leads you to being able to access their respective libraries with monthly charges of around £6-7 a month, it's hardly breaking the bank either.

JUST splashed out hundreds on a new highdefinition TV safe in the knowledge you're at the cutting edge? Then perhaps it's best you don't read on... Because no sooner have we embraced HDTV, bought the TV set, and the set-top box, and model the proverbial t-shirt, look who lurks around the corner. During last month's Olympic Games Japanese broadcaster NHK tested its Super Hi-Vision – in short a super-powered HD set. Working in partnership with the BBC and the Olympic Broadcast Service, the Games' in-house TV production company, Super Hi-Vision boasts images 16 times the resolution of existing HD. The images were beamed to a select audience – some theatres in London and screenings in Washington in the US and Tokyo and Fukushima in Japan – a nation no strangers to pioneering the latest developments. Those fortunate enough to catch a glimpse of the images were
NHK
impressed Super Hi-Vision too – with the level of viewer immersion and clarity of image drawing much praise. The good news for those now staring at their flatscreen and already feeling it's old hat, is that the technology is still a good few years from being in a position to be rolled out commercially and, better still, at first it is likely only to be used for large screens rather than in the home. But they've said that before haven't they?
Rather than the old-school method of posting DVDs to and fro, today it's all about streaming movies direct into the home. Netflix and Lovefilm are now involved in a mighty battle for market share – with the smart money suggesting the Amazon-owned Lovefilm likely to emerge triumphant, at least in the UK marketplace. Especially if the long-awaited Kindle Fire finally emerges and utilises the link as its key movie port of call. And that was further boosted earlier this summer after it clinched a deal with the Miramax studio allowing its line-up to include the likes of Sin City, a selection of Quentin Tarantino's movies, and Martin Scorsese's There Will Be Blood. What's more an increasing number of TV box sets is strengthening the proposition for those not wanting to commit to Sky's long-term contracts and premium rates. The winner will become a major player – the loser will face a battle for their very survival.
