Matt’s Media Tips 12-17 Ok - just where have you been? I know, I know - two weeks have gone by and no Matt’s Tips and Tricks! I apologize for the break in continuity. I was on the road for the past three weeks in-a-row and somehow time just got away from me. But I’m back...from outer space...sorry “I Will Survive” just popped into my head for some strange reason. So without further ado, let’s get back to it! We’re right in the middle of the holidays and many of us have been giving and receiving gifts, wrapping up new ones, and gearing up for some quality time with friends and family. So this week I’d like to give you a few things to put into your virtual instructional stockings. But here’s the thing. Everything that I’m going to share with you in the space below is from our community. They’ve all shared their resources with you by becoming DEN Stars and uploading their work to Discovery Education. Consider them their gifts to you. I found them by clicking on the DEN Assets link found in the lower left hand corner of your Narrow My Results box under the BY SOURCE section. Here are a few of my favorites: Lindsay Hopkin’s QR Code Presentation in both PDF and PPT. Check out this cooler than cool presentation that will provide you with everything you every wanted to know about QR codes. She reveals just how fun and easy they are to create and include in your instruction. I also love Lindsay’s Using Twitter To Summarize activity. It uses tools like Twitter and a Faketweetbuilder to summarize an encyclopedia article on the Boston Tea Party, summarizing the important events, then rewriting the events as tweets from the perspective of Samuel Adams. Nancy Sharoff’s Beat the Teacher (RTF File) is a variation of Making Words by Patricia Cunningham. Over the years she has modified and streamlined the process. The lessons are on

individual sheets which students cut out (no more losing letter tiles!), the fact, as the teacher, she plays just as hard with her kids to win which lends just the right amount of competition to the game. Last year, her students (2nd grade) earned 324 points! That meant they came up with 324 MORE words than she did during the course of the game. And they earned a pizza party at the end of the year! Susie Austin’s Digital Poetry Guides includes Rubrics (XLS) Handouts (PDF), Photostory Tips (PDF) and Podcast instructions (PDF) to help you and your students create digital stories and poems. What a great toolkit to have in your bag of tricks! Carleen Beard’s Virtual Museum includes great ways for students to create layers /organization of their information. Whether you want them to describe various topic items, compare and contrast items, show cause and effect, etc, they simply creatively "create floors" for each item they wish. She includes walk-through videos and links to more resources. Deborah Thonus’ Nine Finger Multiplication Trick is an easy to use and understand video that demonstrates how to multiply by nine using just your fingers. Allison Shook’s Math Resources for Common Core Grades 6-8 is a link to a fantastic Livebinder full of materials to support implementation of the common core curriculum in mathematics for grades 6-8. Ruth Manlandro’s Washington D.C. Virtual Field Trip includes a lesson plan and rubric around a challenge - planning a visit to our nation’s capital. Students have to research and gather information on the many monuments, museums, and other attractions to visit in Washington, D.C., create a travel brochure, project a budget and more. Max Brook’s The Digital Classroom - It’s Everywhere! includes a PowerPoint that explores how educators AND their students can use Discovery Education’s video, imagery, audio, and more to explore their curiosity and deliver that “a-ha!” moment. We'll also examine how Discovery Education’s interactive Builder Tools can be used to easily customize lessons that allow students to process information through multiple modalities 24/7 from any web-enabled device, anywhere! And last but not least I wanted to leave you with a specially created holiday card for you. Please click here to access and enjoy! http:// corporate.discovery.com/holiday-card/2012/ I wish you all the very best of holidays and a happy new year! Matt Monjan @monjan
