In line with many events in 2020, Halloween was a low-key affair with a small gathering of “haunting enthusiasts” gathering to mark the occasion. Far Left: Savannah Veber, Alexis Bishop and Destiny Veber and left: Jeurge Veber and Marie Maroney got creative in costuming to ensure that Halloween did not go unmarked.
Children’s Book Week attracts budding authors across the region
Themes of family stories and resilience resonated in the annual First Five Forever’s Children’s Picture Book Competition held by Rockhampton Regional Libraries as part of recent Children’s Book Week celebrations.
The competition called on writers and illustrators of all ages to create a picture book suitable for young readers aged 5 years and under. Stories about chooks, colours, pets, siblings, family outings and superheroes featured, with colourful and creative illustrations used to extend the storyline. Communities Spokesperson Councillor Drew Wickerson said that authors and illustrators performed exceptionally well under difficult COVID-19 restrictions.
“Our normal picture book competition generates hundreds of entries each year with lots of wonderful concepts developed and crafted for young readers. This year, creators had to move into a digital space to upload their entry for our judges. Library staff were able to help with some of the technical issues associated with uploading the entries, which was invaluable,” Cr Wickerson said. “The response to this year’s competition really highlighted the enthusiasm for literacy in our region. Congratulations to our competition winners, across all ages, on your outstanding efforts.” Early literacy advocate and competition judge Lindell Lutton said the competition entries were of a very high standard with a range of beautifully told and presented stories. “It’s exciting to see the calibre of the next generation of authors and illustrators in the region. Don’t forget that your local library has hundreds of wonderful picture books to inspire you if you are interested in writing and illustrating for young readers,” Ms. Lutton said.
Comics and Graphic Novels Galore @ Your Library
Many adults have fond childhood memories of hoarding a well-thumbed stash of comics in a box under the bed or in a bookcase.
Fast forward a couple of years (or decades!) to the next generation and chances are they may have also discovered the clever storylines and inspiring artwork of graphic novels as well as comics. If you have grown up loving comics, then you are in for a treat at your local library. Library members of all ages will find something to love in the new online suite of over 1055 titles available via RB Digital (Graphic Novels/Comics), from Disney Comics’ beloved characters and stories such as Frozen, Lion King, Star Wars and Mickey Mouse to Marvel Comics’ Captain Marvel, Spiderman and The Avengers. Other publisher brand favourites such as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Transformers, Hellboy, My Little Pony, Peabody and Sherman are sure to inspire and delight, as will classic comic brands such as Disney, Marvel, IDW, and Dark Horse.
Fine tune your selection in RB Digital to comics written in English or Japanese Manga, for different reading levels and over 22 genres. There is literally something for everyone. If you have a yen to read a real book, then take your pick from nearly double the amount of graphic novels in the physical book collections for adults, teens and children. There are over 3200 graphic novels to choose from across all library branches in the Rockhampton Regional Library Service. In the words of the iconic comic book writer, editor, publisher and producer Stan Lee, The experience of reading a printed comic book will never change, but now, thanks to the digital age, there are many different ways to enjoy the same story. Digital comic books, of course, can be interactive in many different ways, allowing the reader to feel like a participant in the story. Drop into your local library branch and find out more about how you can access these fantastic resources. Remember that membership of our Living, Learning, Libraries is free!
