How did this show get started?

The concept of Beat Out Cancer began one evening in 2011 as I sat thinking about my mom, Kit Huller, who had recently lost her battle with Ovarian Cancer. I was reflecting on her and how much light she had brought to this world through her friendships, her generosity, and her attitude about life, and I decided that I wanted to do something to honor her that would help keep other special people like her from leaving this Earth too soon due to the awful disease we have come to know as cancer.

As I thought about my mom and brainstormed ideas, I remembered how supportive she was of my drumming when I was growing up. Day after day as I beat on my drums, she would always have something nice to say to keep me going. Whether I had a rehearsal at the house, a gig across town, or was just beating on the drums along with my favorite Rush song, she was always there, smiling and supporting me. That’s just who she was.

The Beat Out Cancer Club and Georgia Has Talent is my way of remembering my mom and giving back to a world that has given me so much. It’s also a way to support local drummers and other musicians and performers the way my mom supported me. It’s a show full of music, where the various performers voluntarily audition and come together for a common cause.

My heartfelt thanks goes out to all of the volunteers who helped to make this show possible. Thank you so much for enabling my vision to become a reality. Whether you are part of the show, a volunteer working behind the scenes, a spectator, donor, or many of the above, thank you so very much. I could not have pulled this off without the amazing support of so many. Your loyalty to this cause, hard work, and generosity has truly been remarkable, and I know the money we raise tonight will be worth it all.

Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show. And don’t forget to use the restroom before we start -- we’ll be taking a whack at cancer for about 2 hours (with an intermission) Our wonderful silent auction will conclude right after the show! Be sure to place your bids for some of the fantastic merchandise! Thanks for being here to help us Beat Out Cancer while showing off that GEORGIA HAS TALENT!
