TOOL TRANSFORMATION The guidelines for this Sophomore Studio project were to create a transformation of your tool from thing to place in a series of 7 drawings. In each 12” x 12” ink drawing the scale doubles and different techniques specified for each are used.
This project began with the exploration of a tool with a mechanical part through drawings and sketches. With my selected ice cream scooper I decided to zoom into the sphere and emphasize the shading on the inside. My scene gradually morphs from the ice cream scooper to the desert (more specifically Morocco) where camels are trekking. The choice of transforming into the desert was to create a contrast that would illuminate the purpose of the tool. I wanted to convey the environment well, so I focused on how I used pointillism and shading techniques to communicate the texture. To end the collection with a sense of irony and continuity, I included the bowl of ice cream in the last drawing. Tools used CM

For this assignment, I was inspired by photographs of the desert. Morocco has been a long time place of inspiration for me. To make sure I had a good understanding of the area and the proportions of camels, I utilized the Internet to find helpful images.

This project was very time-consuming and challenged me to meet my high quality expectations within the time period. First, I developed my concept of transforming from ice cream scooper to camels in the dessert. Next, I did many rough drafts to layout how I wanted my transformation to progress. After settling on the transformation, I used a light table to lightly trace my drawings onto Bristol Board. My drawing experience prior to this project was mainly in graphite where I have the flexibility to erase if necessary. Working with ink on this series challenged me to be very intentional every time I put my pen to paper. That being said I feel that my craft was my strength with this project. The first and last two drawings were the most effective in my opinion. The transformation in the

third, fourth, and fifth was weaker than I would have liked. It takes more effort to follow. Overall, I was pleased with how I communicated the environment I created, and especially how the camels turned out.

COLOR STUDY
The color study exercises were creating a grey scale, color wheel, and 11-step de-saturation scale. The objective was to gain an awareness and undersanding of color interactions and the properties different colors have.

Images I took on the Blue Ridge Parkway of North Carolina
After painting a grey scale and colorwheel, I created a 11-step de-saturation scale using two complementary colors taken from our color wheel. I chose to
Color Study
create my scale from orange and cyan-blue. The falls colors of the North Carolina mountains were my inspiration for this color choice.
Mallory Short 15
My process was consistent for the grey scale, color wheel, and de-saturation scale. I mixed paint using a palette knife and painted swatches on Bristol board. I cut out the swatches with the handy tool pictured above. Once I had narrowed the swatches down I attached them with tape and mounted them on Bristol Board.

PATTERN GENERATION This Sophomore Studio project was an exercise in motif design, pattern generation, and color study. It built off the previous assignment to paint an 11-step de-saturation scale of two complements on the color wheel.

There were a range of criteria the collection of six patterns had to address - equal value, equal intensity, one color to look like two, two colors to look like one, and two warm cool contrasts. Each 18 by 18 sheet of Bristol was painted with acrylic paint. My process for this project began with me designing my motif, patterns, and color combinations in Adobe Illustrator. Once I had selected my patterns I used a laser cutter to trace the patterns on Bristol Board. For the painting process, I used two different methods. I hand painted some and laser cut painter’s tape for painting on others.

The most difficult aspect of this project for me was efficiently painting the plates. If I were
to start this project over again, I would spend more time on the front end experimenting.

For the collection, I wanted to achieve balance with complex and simple patterns. I did not explore as many color options as I could have. The reasoning behind this was to adhere to this same principle of a collection. Even though, I did not branch out with the colors, I was pleased with how they read. The color scheme while very

Even with a single motif there are unlimited possibilities. I look forward to playing with pattern generation more in the future.

ILLUSTRATOR EXERCISES The illustrator portion of studio was very informative. Over the course of the semester we learned how to use the pen tool, gradients, gradient mesh layers, transparencies, the brush tool, and much more. Learning how to use clipping masks, and understanding layers was essential for my final project. The violin and leaf were my favorite exercises I did. I used the pen tool and gradient mesh to create them.

MEDALLION POSTER The objective of this project was to design a poster-formatted image that incorporates repeat medallions and tells a story in concept. I used original photographs to illustrate the creative vision of a musician. That musician happens to be my younger sister. The poster was composed in Adobe Illustrator and then printed out at 60 by 40 with a plotter.

Of all my studio projects this semester, I prefer this project. I think I broke more out of the box with this more abstract concept and composition. My tendency was to want to use the basis of my Illustrator exercise violin drawing and create a beautiful composition out of it. I spent the majority of time while working on this project splitting my time between five posters I was torn between. They ranged in concept from entering the door to your future to a modern interpretation of the hear, see, and speak no evil monkeys.
Medallion Poster
These are the medallions I created. I primarily focused on two forms. I experimented with how color and composition could enhance the visual impact of the medallion repeat. For my final, I ended up using the blue gradated medallion on the bottom left and adjusting the color to create two horizontal borders.
Mallory Short 29
I came up with the concept of doing a modern rendition of the hear, see, and speak no evil monkeys. My idea was to create a modern parody of the saying using a laptop, headphones, and a cellphone. I struggled to acheive the look and aesthetic I wanted.
Taking my initial drawing of a violin done for an Illustrator exercise, I experimented with overlaying medallions to see what kind of composition I could form.

The photograph of my sister
Clipping masks applied to photos of my sister’s instruments
I found the photograph of my sister going through an old flash drive. This unedited image I took three summers ago. It had stood out to me as being very striking when I took it originally. Coming across it again I decided to experiment with it for my medallion poster. Her gaze is intense and pulls you in. Having that gaze printed on a large scale only enhances this effect. The cool intensity of her gaze I chose to represent with blue tones. I experimented with including more colors, but I decided on a monotone composition, because it makes
Mallory Short 31
more of an impact on the viewer. The other reason behind using the monotone color scheme was to mask the original coloring of the photographs. The photography of my sister had a fluoresecent green coloring coming off the lamp as you can see in the picture.

ERROR MESSAGE: Cannot be flattened I struggled with the many transparent layers and clipping masks of my image. Downsizing the file to send to the plotter took a good deal of effort. I continuously encountered issues with flattening the file. I gained some new knowledge of file compression in the process. I got my file down to size and the print turned out. I enjoyed seeing my work at such a large scale. It ended the semester off on the right note.
