BA (Hons) Fashion Art Direction

Volume 1. / 2018

Foreword This publication supports the inaugural showcase of work by graduating students from the Fashion Art Direction course that commenced in 2015/16. This showcase allows us the opportunity to share work produced by all levels of study. The programme for Fashion Art Direction aims to explore ideas that anticipate change, trend and lifestyle supporting the generation and development of visual fashion concepts and outputs. The images displayed highlight these aspects and show the potential for Fashion Art Direction as a key stakeholder within the fashion industry as well as other creative and socio-political contexts. Final year students have researched and investigated diverse themes ranging from happiness, positive relationship with food and the body to dystopian/ utopian societal concepts and fashion sustainability. These have been explored through a broad skill set spanning art direction, collaboration, curation, illustration, photography, moving image, styling and set design. The breadth of this work reflects currency with the changing landscape of how fashion is designed, communicated, consumed and extended. Lesley Raven

Second year Throughout 2017/18, Level 5 students have undertaken a series of projects designed to engage with both industry and the relevance that Fashion Art Direction has in culture and society. Independently made publications were launched at the Whitworth Art Gallery, i-D magazine set a brief exploring the students’ relationship with the North of England, followed by a project exploring the impact of Brexit on fashion. Collaboration is also at the core with one project requiring students to source graduate collections from around the UK. This preceded a major Manchester School of Art fashion presentation produced by Level 5 Fashion Art Direction showcasing the work of L5 Fashion Design. The students are finishing the year with a Unit X exhibition at Manchester Art Gallery. Adam Murray

First year Current first year students have explored ways of working independently, collectively and collaboratively. The Guerrilla Fashion Show represents a collaborative project in which Fashion students designed and constructed garments and Fashion Art Direction produced and directed the finale show, marketing and documenting the whole process. The show took place in Manchester city centre, showing the ambition and confidence of our students to make a mark on the local environment during their studies. Lesley Raven
