BEING A CREATIVE ON LOCKDOWN.
Lockdown has proven both useful and challenging for me; it has helped to strengthen relationships with friends, family and loved ones, but mostly it has helped me to turn the excess amount of free time into various fields of creativity.
OUTDOOR PHOTOGRAPHY. Many of my days on lockdown have consisted of walking to places in Manchester which I had not yet looked at in detail. On these walks, I took a lot of photos capturing things which were visually interesting to me; many of them being derelict, graffiti’d or relating to the closures of places on lockdown in some way. Previously, I had never appreciated the beauty of my surroundings as much as I do now.

FASHION ILLUSTRATION AND POTENTIAL COMMISIONS. My most recent and most personally enjoyable creative outlet has been fashion illustration. I have started off by asking people if I can draw them and have done physical drawings then edited them digitally to have more contrast and to look more smooth. Following some good feedback and also through genuinely enjoying doing this, I also plan to start commissions soon. Before doing this, I am going to thoroughly research various charities and choose one for which i will donate 50% of the money from the commisions.

STYLING AND PHOTOGRAPHY. One of my interests is styling and conducting my own photo shoots, including the makeup and creative direction. Obviously, lockdown has restricted the limits of this and due to living with my camera-shy boyfriend, my only choice of model has been myself. This particular shoot was inspired by themes of neo-futurism, dystopia and apocalypse. I tried to choose garments as similar to Gareth Pugh’s as possible, since his futuristic designs were also a main influence for the shoot.
I bleached the sweatshirt here myself in order to look like some from his previou collections. To add, the makeup and hair were heavily influenced by avant-garde and unusual runway looks. The limitations of location meant that the photos were taken next to my flat, in the very glamorous smoking area and rubbish tip. I would like to think that this added a sort of apocalyptic look to the shoot, but mainly the shoot was fun due to being so challeging to conduct and also look good at the same time.

Lockdown has felt like time is moving faster than it ever has before, but also slower than it ever has before. As a creative, I have found it hard to gain inspiration or motivation. I decided to create these self portrait images, experimenting with bold colours and graphic typography inspired by zine aesthetics I enjoy. I chose a usual household object, an orange, as a prop; I tried to make the orange seem much more exciting and vibrant than it usually would just sitting in the fruit bowl. I used this idea as an almost parallel to how although lockdown has been mundane and boring, you can try turn your experience into something more vibrant and exciting. Although this is easier said than done.

I have spent time in lockdown exploring my hometown and trying to see the beauty where I may have stopped seeing it after living here for so long. I like how on the grey and rainy days there is a small and muted colour palette you can see around the town.

NEW TECHNOLOGY Lily Taylor- @lilsfolio
During the lockdown period, I have became increasingly interested in how the state of fashion will change post-COVID19, in particular how fashion will be communicated. Announcements such as London Fashion Week going digital and gender neutral, and Gucci becoming seasonless have made me wonder how brands will still engage with their consumers and ultimately sell their products. Technology such as virtual reality and CGI are likely to be the game changer for brands rethinking their strategies. Virtual reality has already became a promeninant feature of fashion week, and CGI models such as Lil Miquela are begining to take over instagram. I have began experimenting with these two technologies and hope to use the rest of my time continuing to learn more about these practices; I would especially like to learn how to create my own CGI virtual model.

Lockdown saw the birth of FaceTime photoshoots. Inspired by @mae.productions, I was able to style, direct and photograph friends during this time through my phone- probably something I never would have done without the COVID19 cirumstances. It was interesting to see my instagram fill with similar photoshoots; seeing the creativity of people in industry despite the hard times of lockdown was particularily uplifting. Although I enjoyed shooting through Facetime, I was glad when lockdown began to ease and I was able to take photographs in person again.
