This emblematic Barcelona building is home to the Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya and showcases the most important art movements on the national and international stage.


The essence of medieval art The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya houses the best collection of Romanesque mural painting in the world. Together with the splendour of Gothic art, it provides a fascinating tour of medieval art. 1123 consecration of the church of Sant Climent de Taßll, in the Pyrenees 1920 to stop them from being exported and to preserve the painting, the murals were removed from the interior of the church and taken to the museum. The paintings from the apse are the Museu Nacional’s masterpiece



The modernity of Modernisme Barcelona is the capital of Modernisme thanks to Gaudí and his architecture. The Museu Nacional d’Art de Catalunya keeps his interior designs as well as the pictorial work by Casas and Rusiñol, two artists who travelled to Paris and brought back with them the novelties of the times, such as using posters for advertisement. Modernisme became Catalonia’s distinctive artistic movement. 1890 Casas and Rusiñol amaze the audience from Barcelona with an exhibition that will mark the start of Modernisme in Catalonia 1897 the cafe-restaurant Els Quatre Gats opened. It was often to be visited by Casas, Rusiñol, Utrillo and Picasso and was the very centre of the Modernista movement in Barcelona

From the times of Gaudí to the 1950s Gaudí and Jujol revolutionised the decorative arts with their innovative designs for the interiors of the homes of the Catalan bourgeois. They are two of the main exponents in the collection of Modern art, which continues with rooms on the Spanish Civil War and the post-war period. 1883 Antoni Gaudí started to work on the project of his life: construction the Sagrada Família 1936 the political propaganda during the Spanish Civil War will bring about new artistic techniques, especially photography 2014 the Museu Nacional becomes a centre of reference for Modernisme in Barcelona and Catalonia
