How to Use Essential Oils Safely

Our Essential Oils are highly concentrated liquids that may be harmful if not used correctly. Oils are used in many different ways including medicines, skin and hair treatments and perfume. Essential oils should never be used undiluted on the skin. Follow our simple steps to safely enjoy the many benefits that aromatherapy can offer. 1. Some oils can cause allergic reactions. Test on a small area of skin before using a new oil. “What is a skin or patch test?” A patch test should be carried out before using any new product. Simply place a little of the essential oil mixed with a carrier oil onto the skin of the inner arm. Check after 24 hours. If there is no itchiness or adverse reaction then it's fine for you to use. 2. Some essential oils should be avoided during pregnancy (these include Basil, Cedarwood, Cinnamon, Clary sage, Clove, Juniper, Lemongrass, Peppermint and Rosemary) or if you have any health conditions. Be sure to read about any safety precautions associated with the essential oil you want to use. 3. Less is More. Essential oils are highly concentrated and you may need just one drop. There’s no need to add more when you don’t need too. 4. Hazardous Essential oils. Not all essential oils are suitable for use in aromatherapy. 5. Essential oils should not be taken internally. A consultation with a professional aromatherapist should be made to find out more. 6. Never let children use Essential oils without an adult present who understands how to use them. 7. Keep away from Animals & Pets. 8. If any Essential oil spills mop up immediately with paper towels. 9. Do not eat, drink or smoke whilst handling Essential oils. 10. Essential oils are flammable – keep away from naked flames and hazardous areas. 11. Always store in a cool, dry place away from heat and direct sunlight. Always use original containers. Avoid contact with polished surfaces and plastic. If in any doubt, consult your physician or qualified aromatherapy practitioner.

Methods of Extraction & Storing Essential Oils

There are 3 main ways of extracting essential oils from aromatic plants. These are expression, distillation and extraction.

Expression

This method is only used on citrus fruits. The essential oil in citrus fruits in close to the surface of the peel and are easily obtained be squeezing and finely puncturing the peel.

Distillation

The Distillation process involves heating the plant material until a vapour is formed, then cooling the vapour until it becomes liquid. In water distillation, the plant material is covered by water and heated in a vacuum sealed container. This method protects the oils as they can not overheat. When the condensed material cools down, the water and essential oil is separated. The water that is separated in this process is also used and is marketed as floral waters (hydrosol). Steam Distillation uses steam under pressure to swiftly extract the essential oil. The hot steam helps to release the aromatic molecules from the plant material and the molecules of these volatile oils then escape from the plant material and evaporate into the steam. The steam which then contains the essential oil, is passed through a cooling system to condense the steam, which forms a liquid from which the essential oil and water is then separated.

Solvent Extraction

For the most delicate plant material, such as flowers, and for those containing only small amounts of essential oil, solvent extraction processes may be used. The main advantage is that this method is gentle. The maceration extraction method soaks the flowers in hot oil, which ruptures the cell membranes, this is then absorbed into the oil. The oil is then cleared and decanted. Our Essential Oils: 100% pure, therapeutic grade essential oils suitable for use by therapists. Suitable for making cosmetics, massage oils, soaps and candles as well as for use in the home. Concentrated blend ideal for use in oil burners and saunas. Supplied in an amber glass bottle with tamper evident cap and integrated dropper. Essential Oils General Safety Guidelines: STORAGE Keep lids on and integral droppers in place. Always keep in Original Bottles. Keep out of the reach of Children and Pets. Store out of Direct Sunlight at normal room temperature. USE Not for Internal Use. Do not use on Skin Undiluted. If you have a medical condition particularly pregnancy, blood pressure problems or seizure conditions then please see medical advice before using any essential oil. Essential Oils are not an alternative to medical care – always seek help from a medical practitioner. Do not stop taking any medication unless on the advice of your doctor. ALLERGIES AND SENSITIVITIES Always do a patch test before using the oil on the skin. If irritation occurs discontinue use.
