WALKS WITH MATT Gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for the science and beauty of Nature in the midst of seasonal changes. Dress for the weather and bring your binoculars. Matt Schuth has been a naturalist at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum for more than 30 years. A very popular guide, he is an expert on birds and other local wildlife as well as a keen observer of the way organisms adapt to the ever-changing conditions of their environment. NOTE: As Minnesotans know, Mother Nature can be unpredictable! What may begin as a mushroom hunt may turn into warbler watching… that is the joy and spontaneity of nature, and of these explorations. Be prepared for unpredictable weather and a possible change of subject matter based on what Mother Nature has in store for participants during this session.

GUIDED WAL KS

SUGGESTED EQUIPMENT: binoculars, magnifying glass, practical shoes for walking over uneven paths, and dress for the weather. Each Walk: Limit 40, Meet in the Ordway Parking Lot $12 member/$24 non-member, includes Arboretum admission WALKS WITH MATT: EARLY SPRING WILDFLOWERS & BIRD MIGRATION (960-04-23-16)

Saturday, April 23, 10 a.m. – noon

Search for early spring flowers such as hepatica, bloodroot, Dutchman’s breeches and trillium. Catch sight of the migrating birds of springtime and learn which birds are just passing through and those who are coming to stay for the summer. WALKS WITH MATT: LATE SPRING WILDFLOWERS, WARBLERS & WATERFOWL (960-05-14-16)

Saturday, May 14, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Celebrate the second wave of spring wildflowers such as marsh marigold, jack in the pulpit, and mayapple! Be on the lookout for the sights and sounds of early warblers, thrushes, kinglets, phoebes, waterfowl, and a variety of sparrow, and to learn about their nesting and mating habits. WALKS WITH MATT: SING LIKE THE BIRDS (960-05-28-16)

Saturday, May 28 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Learn to identify a bird “by ear.” Look and listen for the distinctive sounds of catbirds, warblers, indigo buntings and blue-gray gnatcatchers, to name a few. Let the Arb become your concert hall as you walk woodland trails listening to and enjoying the symphony of nature.

WALKS WITH MATT: BOBOLINKS, BLUEBIRDS & MEADOWLARKS (960-06-11-16)

Saturday, June 11, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Examine flowers and grasses of the open fields and woodland edges of the Arboretum, including the Western edge of the Arboretum, close to the Director’s House. In addition to seeking bobolinks and meadowlarks, participants will learn details about the Arboretum’s bluebird program and perhaps even get up close and personal with baby bluebirds. (Participants will follow Matt by car from the Ordway Parking Lot to special parking area) WALKS WITH MATT: WOOD DUCKS AND WRENS OF SPRING PEEPER MEADOW (960-07-30-16) Learn about the various birds that make a home in Spring Peeper Meadow and learn about the history and restoration of this unique site. Birds you might encounter include Eastern kingbirds, wood ducks, tree swallows, marsh wrens and more. Discover why wetland meadows are so important to our region and delight in the rich diversity found in this precious pocket of the Arboretum. WALKS WITH MATT: SIGHTS, SOUNDS & SONGS OF THE PRAIRIE (960-08-20-16)

Saturday, August 20, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Examine the unique “songs” of crickets, cicadas and katydids, with other insights into the prairie that once covered our region. The Arboretum prairie will be in its glory at the end of summer, from tall grasses to flowering plants, along with the variety of winged friends who linger into late summer, like over 400 different species of bees, most of which do not sting! WALKS WITH MATT: MUSHROOMS, MIGRATIONS & MORE! (960-09-10-16)

GUIDED WAL KS

Saturday, July 30, 9 a.m. – 11 a.m.

Saturday, September 10 10 a.m. – noon

The advent and duration of the mushroom season are the result of a seemingly mysterious combination of components along the Bog Area and Green Heron Trail. Participate in a hunt for the wide and amazing Jason Costanza/Flikr assortment of mushrooms and fungi at the Arboretum. But don’t keep your eyes on the ground too long, as birds also begin their migration at this time, and participants will be on the lookout for ducks, sparrows and shorebirds.

OR Saturday, July 30, 9:30 a.m. – Noon (100-07-30-16) OR Saturday, July 30, 1 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. (100-07-30-16-02) Peter Juhl, stone balancing artist, www.temporarysculpture.com Dazzle your friends with a new skill that looks like magic, but is closer to meditation or art. Peter will show you how to balance three or more rocks in seemingly impossible fashion without the aid of bolts, duct tape, or glue. Then he’ll guide you through the steps of “coaxing a rock into position” using principles of physics (and some patience) to create your own sculpture. You’ll leave grounded, refreshed, and able to repeat your balancing act in your own garden. You’ll never look at stones in the same way again! This workshop is designed for adults; because a general understanding of physics is discussed, suggested minimum age for this class is 12. An assortment of practice rocks will be available to use during class. Limit 24, Visitor Center $42 member/$55 non-member, includes Arboretum admission
