Susan Thurston-Hamerski, author, adult education manager, curator of sculpture at the Arboretum Grab a pair of snowshoes and follow Susan on a guided winter-wonderland walk to the Arboretum’s Harrison Sculpture Garden. You’ll be impressed by the world-class sculpture collection that includes work by Louise Nevelson, Barbara Hepworth, and Mimo Paladino. Winter adds her own embellishments to the amazing sculptures created from a variety of materials, including stone and metal. With the addition of three sculptures in fall 2014, this collection is now complete and promises to change how you view nature and sculpture. Carlyn will explain the process, materials, and tools needed to create a work of art with carbon dust. You’ll be encouraged by the “tricks” she will show you as you learn how to capture the dimensions and textures of botanical specimens and create field sketches. Join this very popular walk through the winter wonderland of the Arboretum. Matt will begin with a show-and-tell about some of the Arb’s collections, including bird eggs, nests, and more. Then he will lead you outside to track animals and identify trees and plants in the midst of winter. You’ll learn more about their history and mystery, then return to the Visitor Center for a warming cup of hot chocolate.
