ARBORETUM COMPREHENSIVE CAMPAIGN On September 11, 2016, more than 200 people came together to celebrate the success of the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum's Comprehensive Campaign and to dedicate the new Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center. Central to the success of the Arboretum’s ambitious $60 million comprehensive campaign was the leadership of Arboretum Foundation Trustee and Campaign Chair Jeannine Rivet. At the September 11 event she reflected, “The Arboretum Foundation Board of Trustees was and is resolute in wanting to preserve an environment of discovery and renewal... and ensuring that what we love about the Arboretum would be there for our children and grandchildren. It is this experience of the human connection with nature and outdoors that has been at the heart of the Arboretum Campaign. To witness the outpouring of support and generosity is astounding. It was extremely important to work together as a community and make a difference for future generations."

"In a singular way, the Arboretum paints a picture of the University of Minnesota’s mission: It harnesses the U’s knowledge and research expertise, it drives discovery, it prepares students to make a difference, and it engages with the community by attracting and inspiring thousands of visitors. And philanthropy plays a critical role. Donors — like all of you — are an important and celebrated part of our more than 70,000 donors who make gifts to the full range of what we do at the University of Minnesota each year." – President Eric W. Kaler

The day was a memorable one for so many including the Tashjian family who were represented by three generations. Their leadership and vision honors their parents Harry and Alice Tashjian. The Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center solidifies the Arboretum’s leadership on this critical issue. Together, so much was accomplished during the five-year Comprehensive Campaign that has grown and expanded the beauty and community impact of the Arboretum.

ENSURING ACCESS TO ARBORETUM FIELD TRIPS FOR ALL STUDENTS Reaching 28,000 students from nearly 200 schools from around the Twin Cities, the Arboretum’s Field Trip Program had a lasting impact on the students it served. Through hands-on experiences, students used all of their senses – so that what they saw, heard, touched, and smelled boosted their learning and inspired them to make more discoveries back in their classrooms. The Arboretum offered 20 high quality curriculum topics that align with Minnesota Science Standards. Gifts from many generous donors made it possible to offer scholarships to 7,500 students to help overcome the opportunity gaps in science access and help students achieve their full potential.

28,000 CHILDREN EXPERIENCE AN ARBORETUM FIELD TRIP Students came from schools across the Twin Cities Metro and beyond. The generous support of many donors to the Arboretum’s Annual Fund provided 7,500 scholarships! With 20 high quality curriculum topics that align with Minnesota Science Standards to choose from, teachers rely on the Arboretum to enhance classroom learning. A common theme is echoed in teacher comments: “I always have high expectations from the Arboretum and I was not disappointed. Lessons are developmentally appropriate and the variety of activities provided is great!”

gifts above MEMBERSHIP... LEON SNYDER HERITAGE SOCIETY Individuals who have made commitments of future support to the Arboretum are honored as members of the Leon Snyder Heritage Society. Gifts from Heritage Society members include bequests in their wills and living trusts, beneficiary designations in life insurance and retirement plans, and life-income and other splitinterest arrangements such as charitable gift annuities, charitable remainder trusts and lead trusts. In many cases, these gifts afford substantial tax advantages for donors. Friends of the Arboretum who have made or are considering such gifts are encouraged to share their plans with us (in confidence, of course) so that we may recognize and thank them during their lifetimes and, if they wish, discuss with them what they would like their gifts to accomplish. Q & A with donor Beth Gilbertsen Betts who shared her Arboretum story with 150 attendees at the Leon Snyder Heritage Society Luncheon. How did you first get connected to the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum? "A friend invited me to an education class. I was pleased with the quality of the course. I was going crazy for gardening at the time. I thought, there is a jewel out here that I don't know much about!" Tell me about your first gift to the Arboretum and why do you give? "First I became a member, and then I bought a bigger membership. Then I thought, ‘why don't I give?’ I love this place. I do my little bit to make it better." Beth made a planned gift to support the future of the Arboretum. "The money I invest will help educate people. I get something back as a donor to the Arboretum. Giving brings me joy!"
