Making Spirits Bright Holidays at the Arboretum take on a special glow. This year, the natural wonder of the season is accentuated with the traditional splendor of the Arboretum poinsettia tree and the luminosity of the Great Hall of Trees. Plus, the outdoor holiday décor and winter trails beckon. Whether indoors or out, there is an aura of nature-inspired beauty.

HOLIDAY BRIGHT! The Arboretum is a bit brighter this holiday! Enter the holiday zone: LED lights on buildings and outdoor trees. Delight in the shimmering, and nature-inspired, Great Hall of Trees. Be amazed by the Land of Gingerbread. Make merry with the music of the holiday. Decorate the Cafe tree with your personally-styled ornament or hanging art. Give a gift from the Arboretum Gift & Garden Store – whimsy for home, wild for backyard and outdoors, and yummy treats.

DECEMBER 2015/JANUARY 2016 • VOL 34, NO. 7 Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Magazine is published seven times a year by the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum Foundation, 3675 Arboretum Drive, Chaska, MN 55318-9613, 952-443-1400. The magazine is a benefit of Arboretum membership. No portion may be reprinted without permission from the Arboretum. The information published in this magazine is not necessarily endorsed by the University of Minnesota.

This holiday is extra sweet, you might say, with the reprise of the “Land of Gingerbread” display. Thanks to the talented bakers from around the community for sharing their artistry and whimsy. The special events and weekend fun bring holiday music, Santa (including the new Breakfast with Santa), gift-giving and the return of the popular “Sunday Suppers.” Whether you are a first-time visitor, member or long-time Arboretum friend, this is a special place to celebrate the season. As director of your Arboretum for the past five-plus years, it has been a wonderful adventure and honor to grow a bright and more beautiful future, to be enjoyed this season and treasured for generations to come. Happy Holidays and see you at the Arboretum!

A Message from Brian Buhr Dean of the College of Food, Agricultural and Natural Resource Sciences-University of MN Arboretum Director Ed Schneider will begin a new position in January as chief executive officer of the Botanical Research Institute of Texas in Fort Worth, Texas. Ed has served as Arboretum Director since 2010. Under his leadership, visitorship has grown to 402,000 visits this past fiscal year. The Harrison Sculpture Garden, grand entry garden and gatehouse, Tashjian Bee and Pollinator Discovery Center, and Hsiao-Ho Chinese Garden Walk have been added among others. A capital campaign is expected to raise $60 million by 2016. I want to thank Ed for all that he's accomplished. Peter C. Moe has been named Interim Director and will start in December to ensure a smooth leadership transition. Pete has served as director of operations and research at the Arboretum since 1991. He is a graduate of CFANS and past instructor in the Department of Horticultural Science. Along with collections growth, Pete has been at the core of land acquisitions at the Arboretum, adding forest, wetlands and farmland to showcase conservation and research for visitors. We're delighted that he will bring this experience and vision during this transition. The search for a permanent director will begin early 2016.

Sculpture Garden in Winter – Simply Magical! The Tenth in a Series on Arboretum Gardens/Natural Areas Barbara DeGroot Public Relations Specialist The stark and peaceful winter landscape is a perfect backdrop for viewing the bold and provocative artworks in the Arboretum's Harrison Sculpture Garden.

(Crucifixion)" sculpture in vibrant blue, black, red and yellow. Both works seem to come alive against the monochrome winter landscape.

Dramatically rising from the snow-covered lawn leading to the High Point overlook, these 26 amazing sculptures by world-renowned artists have the power to engage passersby and walkers in any season – but especially so in winter.

If you haven't seen the sculpture garden in a while, take a moment to view three new pieces that were added in 2014 – Rene Kung's "Stone Harp" and "Stone Arch" − you can walk right through it! − as well as Antoine Poncet's lyrical "Fugue Procession." (Sculpture Garden paths are cleared in winter.)

This is a great time to strap on some snowshoes – or hiking boots – and venture out to the Sculpture Garden, which is located roughly half-way along Three-Mile Drive, just east of the Crabapple Collection and west of the (in-progress) Hsiao-Ho Chinese Garden Walk. One of the great joys of winter at the Arboretum is hiking on a Three-Mile Drive blissfully free of vehicular traffic (except for Arboretum vehicles). Another option is to take the shoveled paths up from the Wildflower Garden. As you walk, the only distractions are the rustling of random squirrels, the chatter of wild turkeys and the cheery chirp of chickadees and cardinals. When you approach the sculpture garden, feast your winterweary eyes on a blast of color − Philip King's "Wayzata Reel 2006," a lively abstract expressionist piece with bold curves in brilliant yellow, red and green. Farther up the hill, check out Barbara Hepworth's Mondrian-inspired "Construction

Meandering among these works, you'll be buoyed by Granlund's joyous "Swimmers," energized by Goseyun's fierce "Spirit Dancer," whisked up into thin air by Kung's "Song for Five Voices" and mystified by the oblique but engaging "Night Song" by Paladino. And that's just a sampling. How fortunate we are to have these masterpieces in our midst! Making your retreat to the Arboretum Visitor Center, no doubt you'll find yourself looking with new eyes upon the landscape and appreciating Nature's own sculptural artistry in the winter landscape. Learn more about the Arboretum artworks by joining a winter hike to the Harrison Sculpture Garden with art curator Wendy DePaolis on Sunday, Jan. 3 from 10 to 11 a.m. Register at www.arboretum.umn.edu/artsclasses.aspx.

Winter Pruning: Even our Trees and Shrubs Need Haircuts! Leslie Yetka Horticulture Education Manager

Winter is a great time to be thinking about the woody plants in your landscape... namely your trees and shrubs. The lack of leaves, coupled with cold temperatures, makes it a perfect setting to give them the haircuts they need to grow healthy and strong next year. Consider these tips:

•M ore frequent pruning that removes smaller diameter branches is better than less frequent pruning that removes branches that are too large. • Branches being removed should be no more than one-half the diameter of the trunk or stem you are cutting back to. • Don’t prune in fall as this encourages new stem growth that will be injured in winter. • Don’t make pruning cuts that make branch stumps. • Proper pruning technique minimizes development of decay inside trees. • In general, prune shrubs that bloom early in the spring immediately after they’ve bloomed and not in the winter to avoid removing early set buds.

Terrariums: Gardens for all Seasons Saturday, Dec. 12, 9:30 a.m. – noon $75 members/$90 non-members

Many Ways To Enjoy Winter Outdoors At The Arboretum Greg Lecker Minnesota Master Naturalist Volunteer A crystal clear blue sky spreads overhead above a draped earth that is clean and white. The new snow sparkles in the bright sun. It’s a good day to visit the Arboretum. Crosscountry skiing, snowshoeing, or simply walking or jogging – there are several ways to embrace the winter world.

structure and essence of a tree lies in the form. Other treats await: red crabapple fruit and the red fruit of many other plants, frost-tipped evergreens, animal tracks, cool blue shadows curving over the bounding ground, and the magical rare gift of hoarfrost.

Three-Mile Drive and asphalt paths are regularly cleared and sanded. Do wear footwear with traction soles and tread carefully. To avoid runoff that would harm plants, salt is not applied.

Winter outdoors at the Arboretum is invigorating and beautiful at the same time. Come enjoy it at your pace soon!

A step up from a winter stroll is a showshoe hike or a cross-country ski circuit. At least 8 miles of trails are available for each sport. To inquire about trail conditions, call 612-625-9793 or visit the Arboretum’s home page, www. arboretum.umn.edu. The Arb rents out snowshoes; and snowshoe hiking allows quiet travel through deep snow. To work up more of a sweat, bring your cross-country skis. The reassuring company of the ever-present Black-Capped Chickadee reminds one that if that little guy (or gal) can get out and thrive throughout the winter, surely we can embrace the special gifts of the season. Deciduous trees, without their cloak of leaves, express a tracery that extends above the dark trunk. On one hand, the lack of deciduous leaves hides one sign that allows close-up tree identification. However, the

Join naturalist Matt Schuth for a quick show-and-tell about some of the Arboretum's fauna and flora. Then, bundle up as he leads you outdoors to track animals and identify trees and plants in their winter form. Many have made this winter walk with Matt one of their holiday and year-end traditions. For more, and to register, go to www.arboretum. umn.edu/classesonthemove.aspx.

MIKI HUNTINGTON

How long have you been an Arboretum member? Ever since moving to Minnesota in the summer of 2011. My in-laws, Karen and David Huntington, have been long-time members as well and gifted a membership to me and my husband!

How long have you been a volunteer and what are your duties? I started with special events (such as Taste & Toast, Gala in the Gardens and the Pancake Breakfast). That first fall, I was introduced to delicious Minnesota apples – Honeycrisp and SweeTango® – and decided to volunteer for the "Apple Harvest" Field Trip to learn more...and I was hooked! I spent two summers with the Urban Garden program. I currently volunteer weekly at the Gift & Garden Store. Why do you like to volunteer at the Arboretum? Because of the wonderful people! It's so rewarding to work with students in the Field Trips programs and nice to interact with visitors and fellow volunteers as well! The Arboretum staff is terrific and we are always appreciated as volunteers; there is no shortage of acknowledgment for our contributions, ranging from kind words of thanks to invitations for the annual volunteer BBQ and dinner! The Arboretum is a fun place to volunteer and I look forward to being a part of this delightful community for years to come! What is your favorite place or garden at the Arboretum and why? My absolute favorite places are the snowshoe trails in winter after a heavy snow! It's so peaceful and quiet with gorgeous views and challenging trails! My favorite garden changes with the seasons – we are so fortunate to have the Arboretum to enjoy any time of year! If you would like to find out how you can become an Arb volunteer, go to www.arboretum.umn.edu/how_to_volunteer.aspx.

Blue Jays – Beautiful And Beneficial Matt Schuth Naturalist In 1766, Jonathan Carver wrote: "The blue jay can scarcely be exceeded in beauty by the winged inhabitants of this or any other climates." The blue jay’s iridescent blue feathers spattered with black and white, and its ebony-feathered neck yoke make this bird easy to identify. Southern folklore said the blue jay was yoked to a plow by a sparrow – creating the black ring around its neck. Blue jays are usually in raucous flocks of six or more, but become very quiet and secretive when nesting. Blue jays do rob other bird’s nests, but this predatory action is limited. They are in fact, one of the most beneficial bird species on Earth. Blue jays are major consumers of gypsy and tent moths, as well as hairy caterpillars, which few other birds consume. They can hold up to six oak acorns in their throat pouch, and by burying more than they retrieve, are recognized to have spread the great eastern oak forest about 400 yards

northward every year. Interestingly, researchers believe the evolution of the acorn size is based on the size of the blue jay’s mouth. Blue jays do migrate, with more northern birds often replacing those we see in our backyards in the summer months. The Cherokees said if you soaked a blue jay feather in water and gently brushed it over a sleeping child's eyes, the child would be an early riser. A story many parents could appreciate! Blue jays are one of the most photographed birds during an Arboretum winter. WINTER PROGRAMS & EVENTS... DECEMBER Tuesday, Dec. 1

“South Wind” Photo by Paul Granlund

“Mountain Mirage” Photo by Paul Granlund

The Grace of Granlund At the Arboretum The late artist, Paul Granlund, an American sculptor with Minnesota roots, was renowned for his figurative works of molded molten bronze. His artistry, spanning more than 50 years and characterized as an “offering of grace” is featured in four gardens at the Arboretum. The Granlund sculpture "Mountain Mirage" was installed in the MacMillan Hosta Glade Garden this past October. This sculpture, donated by Betty and Whitney MacMillan, was originally commissioned for a special wedding anniversary. Replacing the Granlund sculpture “South Wind” (with artist inscription number ‘10’) donated by Tom and Jane Nelson for the Nelson Shrub Rose Garden, and then surreptitiously stolen in April; the Arboretum is purchasing the Artist’s Copy of South Wind II from the Granlund family. This was the first “South Wind”sculpture cast by Granlund. Along Three-Mile Drive, at the Harrison Sculpture Garden, the buoyant “Swimmers” sculpture by Granlund, is part of the international collection of 26 sculptures generously donated to the Arboretum by Alfred and Ingrid Lenz-Harrison in 2013. The first Granlund sculpture at the Arboretum was a gift from the artist to the Arboretum in 1973. “Winter and Summer Nymphs” is located at the Morgan Terrace gardens, behind the Snyder Building. The artist often compared the pouring of bronze to the experience of flying: "I still get a few more heart beats per minute each time it's done." The Arboretum is grateful for the opportunity to share Granlund’s heart-felt and nature-inspired artistry with visitors for generations to come.
