In 2015-16 they pledged more than$1,068,000 in new planned gifts, a significant source of support for the Arboretum. The Heritage Society is named for the Arboretum’s first director, Leon Snyder. His vision helped propel the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum to become one of the world’s leading arboretums. Speakers included Jim Beattie, Leon Snyder’s grandson, who spoke of his grandfather’s vision, and Beth Gilbertsen Betts, a garden volunteer and donor who spoke about how her values informed her decision to make an estate gift to the Arboretum. The Arboretum’s Senior Research Fellow David Bedford rounded out the program with a presentation and orchard tour focusing on more than 100 years of cold-hardy apple breeding history in Minnesota. ARBORETUM GALLERIES – INSPIRED BY “LIGHT” MASTER GARDENERS “GROWING” IN 2016 JACKIE FROEMMING Extension Educator – Master Gardener Program

Snow-covered landscapes mean University of Minnesota Extension Master Gardeners are dreaming of the next growing season. Like most gardeners, they are also reflecting on last summer’s successes and failures. But Master Gardeners get to reflect on their outstanding 2016 volunteer projects as well. This past year Master Gardeners were involved with a rain garden mentoring program in Crow Wing County, a schoolyard garden in Douglas County, a community garden at a public housing site in Ramsey County, raised bed gardens at a rehabilitation center in Winona County, and also manned an information booth focusing on native bees in Kandiyohi County. For details about these projects check extension.umn.edu/ garden/master-gardener/about/annualreport/index.html.

Master Gardeners also collaborated with the Arboretum on The Pollinator Seed Library Project, a volunteer project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation. This project had more than 80 Master Gardeners from 26 counties across Minnesota collecting seeds from native milkweed, prairie clover, and blazing star and sending them to the Arboretum. Now that the seeds have been collected, cleaned, and stored, the seed library will make them available to Master Gardeners for community projects in 2017. The best part of winter for Master Gardeners…planning exciting new volunteer projects for next year!

In the Cafe Gallery, the Arboretum Photographers Society (APS) is hosting “Seasons of Light” - the tenth annual themed print show and sale - from Jan. 9 through April 2. This juried exhibit showcases how APS members have interpreted the theme “Seasons of Light” through the photographs they have taken during the changing seasons at the Arboretum. APS members will be conducting drop-in photographer’s clinics on Saturdays during the run of the show, from noon-3 p.m. All photographs in the exhibit are for sale through the Arboretum Gift & Garden Store.
