Summer is waiting in the wings at the Arboretum. While June 21 marks the official summer solstice, signs of our most anticipated season have already burst on the scene. Starting with summer gardens, look for more than 30,000 annuals in showy variations of pinks with tones of reds and shades of soft yellows and tints of greenery. Summer fun brings the magic of child’s play and wonders of outdoors together in the imaginative sculptures of “Nature Connects: Art with LEGO® Bricks” by artist Sean Kenney. Our summer exhibit offers a whimsical tribute to nature, as each sculpture, consisting of thousands of LEGO bricks, is a nature-inspired creation. No matter what your age, the allure of building with LEGO bricks is timeless! The exhibit also includes a build-your-own…bring friends and family to the Community LEGO Brick Builds, held on alternate Saturdays throughout the summer. Summer afternoons, described by writer Henry James as the two most beautiful words in the English language, are reserved for you to explore the gardens, the trails and the outdoors. Whether hiking, riding on the free Circulators or taking in the Tram tours, we’ll see you at the Arboretum! Note: We are very pleased to announce David Matteson as Director of Retail Operations and Visitor Services. David brings to the Arboretum experience in program management, service operations, strategy and business development. His Arboretum assignment will be to develop strategic and operational plans to increase earned revenue to support the Arboretum, including Visitor Services, Meeting Rentals and Events, Gift Store and Apple House, Gate House, Café, and Marketing and Communications.

Square Foot Gardening

The Best in Flavor – The Highest in Yield In today’s culture, gardening provides sustenance for the stomach…and the soul, with, for many, a challenge to grow in a limited space or urban backyard setting. Landscape gardener Ted Pew maps out a super grid of Home Demo garden beds, — a vegetable tapestry of multiple varieties growing side-by-side.

TOTALLY TOMATOES! Stop by the Teaching Garden (behind Oswald Visitor Center) for all things tomato. The popular snack fruit is the star, offering ideas for your home garden. Colors range from red to purple to creamy white. Sizes grow from minis to softball dimensions. Flavors vary from sweet to tart to acid-y for whatever strikes your palette.

HIGHLIGHTS: • Garden for Small Spaces/Salads: 15 lettuce varieties planted alongside chard and herbs on 1' grids • Intensive Garden 2: look for 110-1' squares of bok choy, carrots, shallots, strawberries, artichokes, kohlrabi and herbs • Intensive Garden 3: look for 52-1' squares with tomatoes at center, surrounded by peas and beets

Colleen Vanderlinden, $21.95; "Midwest Fruit & Vegetable Gardening" – planting, care and harvesting for growing the best edibles. An invaluable resource and the next best thing to having a Master Gardener as your neighbor! Katie Elzer-Peters, $22.99; and "Blue Potatoes, Orange Tomatoes" – children’s gardening book promotes the delight in growing colorful plants that can be harvested for the family table. Rosalind Creasy, $7.95 – all available in the Gift Store (612-301-7619).

More highlights next month. Track and share garden stories at arboretum.umn.edu/gardensofeatin.aspx.

“Connecting with Nature” has taken a very literal meaning in the Arboretum’s gardens this summer! The colorful exhibit, “Nature Connects: Art with LEGO® Bricks,” features 13 displays of large, nature-inspired sculptures made from LEGO bricks. Continuing through Aug. 30, these impressive sculptures – interspersed throughout the Arboretum gardens and collections – are the creation of renowned artist Sean Kenney. (www.seankenney.com)

Photos Courtesy of Sean Kenney

A FEW FUN FACTS ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: • The tallest sculpture is the hummingbird at 76" high, and made from 61,107 bricks. • The longest and widest, at 96" x 96," is the dragonfly. • The peacock was constructed from the most bricks – a whopping 68,827! • For pure whimsy – you can’t beat the Birdbath, complete with birds, bees and a hungry squirrel. Community LEGO® Brick Builds are scheduled for Saturdays, June 13 and 27, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. and alternate Saturdays throughout exhibit. Come and build LEGO bricks together to support special community themes. Open to all visitors with Arboretum admission and members.

It’s Good To Be The Queen! Matt Schuth Naturalist The exuberant calls of robins and red-winged blackbirds are familiar harbingers of spring. A quieter and less noticed one is the humming of honeybees gathering nectar from pussy willow blooms. The buzzing and bouncing of honeybees on willow catkins is an early movement in Mother Nature’s spring symphony.

Colony collapse disorder has had a devastating effect on bees. With engaging and timely education and outreach programs to beekeepers and visitors, the new Tashjian Bee & Pollinator Discovery Center at the Arboretum will be a leader in determining the causes of bee decline and how to stop it. The bee center is slated for opening in mid-2016.

Honeybees are non-native to the U.S. – first brought to America in 1638 by John Smith, who wanted to provide 'sweets' for the colonists.

Read more: "Pollinators of Native Plants" – local author includes information on pollination, types of pollinators, pollinator conservation as well as pollinator landscape plans. Heather Holm, $29.95; and "Natural Beekeeping" – offers guidance on raising bees using a holistic method aimed at hive health. Ross Conrad, $34.95.

Some fun honeybee facts: It takes 40,000 bee loads of nectar to produce one pound of honey. A productive colony can add 70 pounds of honey a week to their hive. A pound of clover honey represents the distilled nectar of 8.7 million flowers. A queen bee can lay up to 3000 eggs in a day. When the queen lays an egg she can determine the sex and kill any possible rivals. Queen bees can sting many times while sterile, worker females sting only once. Males (drones) cannot sting and are killed after mating. The average life span of a worker bee is three months. The almond industry uses 1.4 million colonies of bees, approximately 60 percent of managed hives in the U.S.

For kids: "Beauty and the Bees" – using a fairy tale theme, this book educates children about the value of bees in the garden landscape. Aaron Burakoff, $9.95; and "Honey in a Hive" – helps children learn how these fascinating insects live and work together in complicated societies to create honey. Anne Rockwell, $5.99. – all available in the Gift Store (612-301-7619).

“CONNECT WITH NATURE” AT THE ARBORETUM THIS SUMMER! Leave your car in the parking lot and hop on one of our hip, snazzy batteryoperated, solar-powered Circulator vehicles. It's a free ride (Thurs.-Sun.) and you can take your pick of several destinations – from the Sculpture Garden and Maze Garden to Home Demo Gardens and Learning Center! Each of those areas accesses wonderful pathways to new Arboretum discoveries. If a guided tour is more to your liking, the Trumpet Creeper Tram is always a popular choice. Just $5 a ticket with several departure times to fit your schedule. Of course, our close-in Arboretum gardens provide a great excuse for a lazy day summer stroll! Photo by Mark MacLennan

ARBORETUM CAMPAIGN

Gift Store Renovation

Barbara DeGroot Public Relations Specialist

Visitors will soon see a more visible terrace entrance to the Gift Store, enhanced display areas and more natureinspired products and merchandise selections. As part of the Gift Store’s new look, popular categories such as botanic-themed jewelry, home décor, and glass collectibles will expand, and favorites such as gardening books and supplies, children’s merchandise and Minnesota-theme products will still be featured. The resized floor plan will make the customer checkout area more central. Construction is scheduled to be completed by summer’s end and is funded by a generous gift from BJ Dahlberg as part of the Arboretum Campaign initiative of the Arboretum Foundation.

Visitors on the Wurtele Bog Boardwalk on Green Heron Pond will notice some exciting changes to this popular Arboretum destination.

You make a difference! To support the Arboretum Campaign with your gift, donate at the Oswald Visitor Center; go online at www.arbcampaign.org; call the Development office at 612-301-1263; or mail a gift to: Arboretum Campaign, 3675 Arboretum Dr., Chaska, MN 55318.

Efforts are under way to enhance the visitor experience by creating along the walkway several enhanced flowering "communities" of plants that emphasize native wetland and bog species, especially those that were present in pre-European settlement times, according to Tom Brinda, Arboretum horticulture manager. "Using a few rare remnant southern Minnesota bogs as a guide, we want to create a walking experience that expresses the beauty of the native wetland plants of this ecological niche," said Brinda. He emphasizes that these plants are selected for their ecological appropriateness. Landscape gardener Rich Gjertson and crew will plant them in masses and groupings that will provide contrasts in color, texture and bloom throughout the four seasons. The natural beauty will be enhanced by the planted additions. Just a half-mile long, the Bog Boardwalk is truly a special experience. Green Heron Pond, its adjacent marsh and bog represent three naturally occurring ecosystems in Minnesota that are part of the state's geologic and landscape heritage. The bog itself is one of the southernmost glacial ‘potholes‘ – an area where a large chunk of glacial ice remained before it finally melted. The bog harbors living sphagnum (peat) moss and it even boasts trees growing on a 10-12-ft thick mat of old roots, with open water beneath them! The bog improvements are made possible through the generosity of donors Angus and Margaret Wurtele. Make the bog boardwalk one of your "must-sees" this summer as you connect with nature! Read more: "A Naturalist's Guide to Wetland Plants" – a non-technical guidebook to the ecology of freshwater wetlands in Eastern and Central North America. Donald D. Cox, $19.95 – available in the Gift Store (612-301-7619).

Early Summer Garden Tips

2015 ARBORETUM AUXILIARY ANNUAL PRIVATE GARDEN TOURS Sunday, July 12, Tuesday, July 14 and Wednesday, July 15

Perennialized daffodil and tulip foliage should be retained as long as possible. Though unsightly in June, those leaves are the ”food factories“ to make new flower buds for 2016 and to store energy for the next season. Review the placement of these in the garden. If it is necessary to plant annuals on top of the bulbs or water them all summer, you may damage or rot the dormant bulbs during July and August. Dig up as foliage dies and replant in a well drained and sunny location in early September for best longevity. Staking perennials should be started in late May or early June. As the stems rapidly grow and expand, place welded wire frames around the plants before they are full height and width. This way the plants will grow into and through the frames, making them disappear from view at maturity. Pea staking is an older, European style method of placing sturdy cut tree branches alongside a perennial clump. The expanding plant will grow through this natural stake. Another way is to insert bamboo stakes (or 2 x 2 posts for very large perennials) around the perennial’s root system. As the stems grow, wrap twine around the outside of the clump to contain the branches within the stakes. With a season’s practice and experimentation, you will find the best method to match your garden and skill. The plants’ flowers will be supported throughout the summer’s rain and overhead irrigation. Come to the Slade and Spiegel perennial gardens at the Arboretum to see these styles demonstrated this summer season.

Come tour with the auxiliary in airconditioned motorcoaches followed by Sunday brunch or weekday lunch buffet, which will be served on the Morgan Terrace outside the Snyder Building. Once again, the Auxiliary has discovered four lovely gardens from vintage fun to formal. Each garden owner has designed retreats that show their creativity, love and whimsy for others to enjoy. Online information and registration available at www.aboretum.umn.edu/ auxiliarygardentours.aspx. Call 612-625-9865 with questions or to request hard copy reservation form.

RESERVE YOUR FUN IN THE SUN! Let the Arboretum help you soak up the warmth, sights and smells of summer with an outdoor party! Picnic shelters are the perfect location for hassle-free gatherings; family reunions, graduations, birthdays or company picnics. Shelters are close to gardens, children’s play areas, walking paths and main buildings. They are enclosable, have electrical outlets, serving areas, with parking and bathrooms nearby. Bring your own food* or let Arboretum Catering do the work to provide tasty picnic menus! *Other catering providers and alcohol not permitted Contact Reservations today!
