The Arboretum offers a front-row view as Mother Nature sheds (finally!) her wintry coat and unfolds a tapestry of color that signals the arrival of spring. Taking color cues from the earth and outdoors, Arboretum gardeners have re-imagined the landscape with gardens and tree plantings that play to the magic of spring. Experience 37,000 tulips in every color, lilacs, crabapple blossoms, wildflowers, showy ladyslipper orchids and the green woodlands. Create memories with family and friends as you take in this wonderful show of color.

Springtime is ushering in another change in landscape—a redesigned entry (two lanes branching into three) and enhanced gateway (improved gatehouse and second attendant station) into the Arboretum. After retooling the design and construction schedule, visitors can expect to see work start in late April and continue into late July (with a break for Mother’s Day weekend). Also, spring construction will begin along Three Mile Drive for three Visitor Circulators rest stops. These improvements will help provide a better visitor experience from the moment you enter the Arboretum.

Minnesota Dwarf Trout Lily Matt Schuth Naturalist With the warming, lengthening days of April and May, one can sit in the Dayton Wildflower Garden, listen to the trickling water as it tumbles down the hillside and almost hear the forest floor move as the ephemeral spring flowers emerge through the leaf litter of the previous autumn. Amongst this wildflower renaissance is the Minnesota dwarf trout lily, one of the rarest flowers on Earth and native only to Minnesota. It occurs on fewer than 600 acres of woodland habitat in Rice, Steele and Goodhue counties. Research suggests that it evolved from the larger white trout lily about 9,000 years ago after the last glaciation. It was first collected in 1871 by Mary B. Hedges, a botany teacher in Faribault, who sent a specimen to the famous botanist at Harvard, Asa Gray. Gray named it Erythronium propullans. Propullans is Latin for “sprouting forth” which describes how the plant reproduces. Unlike most flowering plants, the Minnesota dwarf trout lily almost never produces seeds but
is spread when the underground stem of a flowering plant produces a runner bearing a new bulb. Since only about one-tenth of the plants flower annually, reproduction levels are very small in number. Without seeds to be spread by wind, animals and other means, it is easy to understand why the dwarf trout lily is endangered. The common name “trout lily” possibly comes from the purplish blotches on the leaves which resemble certain trout species. The Arboretum is one of the few places to enjoy this incredibly rare, delicate pale-pink flower – “colonies” of these area plants were moved to the Arboretum for research and preservation. The Life and Genius of the English Garden, taught by Professor Mary Meyer, will feature the planning and practice of creating a magical cottage garden based on Jekyll's color theory, just in time to inspire your own garden planting! Summer Exhibition: “Nature in Glass” The Wonders of Craig Mitchell Smith Opens May 31 If you liked our Orchid tree-topper – you are going to LOVE this summer's "Nature in Glass" exhibit! The Arboretum is proud to announce its 2014 summer exhibition: "Nature in Glass: The Wonders of Craig Mitchell Smith," comprising 32 unique and stunning glass sculptures that will adorn Arboretum outdoor gardens and collections. Each large iridescent, fused-glass sculpture will be a masterpiece, created and specifically designed by the artist for the Arboretum's unique outdoor setting. Craig Mitchell Smith has exhibited his glass artwork at botanic gardens and attractions around the country, including Disney's Epcot Center, Norfolk Botanical Garden and Dow Gardens. Prior to the May 31 opening at the Arboretum, he will display his work at Chicago's Navy Pier in March. Smith's sculptural technique involves cutting colorful sheets of glass in the shapes of brushstrokes and using a kiln as a canvas, similar to the style of a painter creating with paint. He lays out shards of glass like paint on a canvas and fires these pieces until they melt and fuse into a desired form. "The Arboretum is delighted to host the imaginative artistry of Craig Mitchell Smith this summer in our gardens. His work will showcase and complement the beauty of our plants and landscape and the gifts of nature," said Ed Schneider, Arboretum director. The exhibit opens May 31 and continues through Aug. 31. Spring Butterfly Exhibit Takes Flight May 17 Barbara DeGroot Public Relations Specialist Who doesn't delight in seeing a butterfly in flight? There's something truly magical in watching those boldly patterned wings beating rhythmically as the creature flits from flower to flower, gracefully performing the life-sustaining task of pollination. Visitors to the Arboretum will have an opportunity to view the wonder of butterflies up-close and personal when the exhibit "Butterflies: Beauty in Flight" opens May 17 and continues through Aug. 17 in the Arboretum's Meyer-Deats Conservatory. Located in the Snyder Building, the conservatory will be filled with live butterflies that are native to Minnesota, as well as common plants that sustain these pollinators. Additional features include an "emergence cabinet" showing the insects in the pupa (chrysalis) stage as they transition into butterflies, as well as signage on their life cycle. Look for butterfly-friendly "pollinator plantings" in containers and gardens. Also planned are special butterfly releases on certain days during the exhibit and Tamron will sponsor a butterfly photo "treasure hunt" with interpretive signage providing photo tips for capturing close-up butterfly images. The exhibit entry fee will be $3 for ages 3 and up; free for kids 2 and under. (Arboretum members will receive free one-time passes.) Arboretum gate admission applies. Exhibit hours will be 10 a.m.-5 p.m. (last entry at 4:45 p.m.) and, due to the nature of the exhibit, only a limited number of people will be allowed entry at a given time. No strollers please.
