PROJECT SYNOPSIS Al-Warraq Ventures is a Startup and Innovation Hub, the area’s bustling heart of everything youth. It is a welcoming place to look up and get inspired from future shapers and entrepreneurs, whilst giving back to the community and preserving pre-development urban features.

DESIGN MORPHOLOGY The project is designed on an 8x8 grid which aligns with the old agricultural grid that was originally existing. The masses of the project are simple and pure, and the plans were designed in a modular manner, that maximizes legibility and space usability.
USERS AND THEME Al-Warraq Ventures aims to serve as a startup hub for entrepreneurs, as well as a community hub for the general youth of Al-Warraq Area and Greater Cairo. The hub offers a diversity of events and services, and therefore, any interested individual is also considered a user. 10

WHAT ARE THE MAIN DESIGN FEATURES THAT HELPED ME ENVISION THE PROJECT? The project features three interconnections, one connecting the scalable startups building with the auditorium, a second connecting the startup incubator with the auditorium, and a third connecting the startup incubator with the community hub.
INTERCONNECTED
One important characteristic in the project is the fact that what happens inside is almost always seen from the outside. This is intended to add to the project’s modern image, and inspire its users.

In addition to the radial grid, the project upholds the predevelopment agricultural grid that was already existent, in an effort to preserve part of the original fabric of Al-Warraq. Also, the project features an existing structure used as a birds tower.
CONTEXTUAL
The users of this project’s typology, essentially, are entrepreneurs in specific and youth in general. This has lead to the design decision that a vibrant atmosphere must be delivered, and this is done through the building’s interiors.

Three startup prototypes are designed so as to be more inclusive, and accommodate for the different needs, according to the financial capabilities of each startup.

The interior design of the project is no different from its main theme: Youthful. This is achieved by using colors that have a positive effect on the user’s energy and perception, and by using materials that are modern and chic. Bright paint colors motivate the user to work and get creative, but at the same time, their percentage is moderate so that it isn’t distracting or triggering. Warm materials such as wood and beigetoned paints are used so as to balance the aforementioned bright colors. Marble and vertical wall studs are also used as accents so as to add a fancy touch to the interior.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
CONTEXTUALITY The project will be responsive and coherent with its context in terms of urban fabric. A dynamic skylight for the project would be in harmony with its surrounding minarets and authentic structures. This project thrives to Revive the old city of El-Fustat, which had served as the original capital of Egypt, and a religious hub, throughout Egypt’s history. The council chamber is located so as to be the morphological center of the axes of archaelogical sites.
COMMUNITY INTEGRATION This building is going to be designed in a way that is both iconic and modest, to enhance community integration and social interaction, in an approach to fulfill the human social needs of democracy, dignity and equality. This has been reflected on the design by framing the different focal points present around the site, and preserving the transparency to give the people their right to rule their own city.

an environment of transparency and collective participation. This city hall aims to let the general public participate in the political process, and have a say in the decisions that affect their lives. The amphitheatre allows for a more casual setting, which could be used in less-formal events, and enhance the participation and engagement of the general public.

CONTEXTUALIZE This project aims to challenge the convenetional approach of fencing that has become popular in Egypt and doesn’t necessarily add any value but xenophobia. Instead, The premisis will

boast a minimal set of street furniture and landscape that will serve the general public, which is a better approach to enhance the safety and security, rather than a fence that would
promote exclusion. The public is welcomed at such areas for gatherings, conducted by the elders, to raise awareness, and evoke a sense of purpose and responsibility in the seniors.
ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO ENGAGE A small kindergarten will serve the kids of the area, and the elders will be engaged in teaching. The elders will take care of the green walls, roof gardens, and many other design elements.

The brief for this project was to pick an Egyptian designer, study briefly their personality, and then design their living space. Amna Elshandaweely came as a great pick for me because of how authentic her work is. It’s full of fabrics, colors, concepts, which would enrich the design.

INDUSTRIAL & TROPICAL The brief for this project was to pick an authentic Egyptian product, and imagine if it were to open a boutique store in the North Coast of Egypt. Lolita, the Egyptian market name for ice pops, was a great fit to the location, as well as a product that most people recall from their childhood. 50
