BIOGRAPHY
To be in between is to be betwixt, among, amidst and amid. Interstices, the spaces in between brushstrokes, interest me. For 20 years as an abstract painter their interactions, spatial visual shifts and illusive meanings have suggested and invited contemplation. I am moved to paint harmonic fields of these charged spaces. In these fields I find associative meanings or rather they find me. Each painting is a unit or part of something larger and unfolds its context in the making. Initially intentional in process these paintings are guided, emotive and intuitive. Through painting I attempt to approach the universal and the unknowable even though I accept it as an impossibility.
With a similar and specific construct of self-imposed limitations, each painting is created as one in a series of three. This opens up rather than constricts possibility for me. My painting process is simple. With each series I impose initial rules and start all the canvases the same. The size canvas I will stretch is determined as its orientation. The color ground is selected and the brushstroke is chosen. I simultaneously drip paint on all three works and embrace the feeling of powerlessness and the haphazardness as the drips slowly begin to paint the canvases. I consider the vertical and the horizontal. Each work is then worked individually to completion with applications of calligraphic gestural brushstrokes. Learning to be patient, peaceful and perseverant is vital as I trust my imposed process. Through this method, unified layers result forming complex optically charged harmonic fields.
In our otherwise chaotic and random world there is in my view a universal order of truth and light that connects us all. There is something both pure and perfect about this assumption that moves me to paint. Each work reveals a personal assertion of truth and engages me like no other. They transport, test and surprise me with their realm of possibility and specificity. Associations by the viewer of rose windows, tapestries and architecture may be asserted. For me it is about being in the painting and being on the very edge of knowing. I am pleased these works confront one to see not just look.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
The works of the 2024 Minnesota State Fair 113th Fine Arts Juried Exhibition in my account is a reflection of the creative truth of artists living in Minnesota. There is a Northern sensibility and a contemporary mix that is exciting here. Whatever the motivation there is an undeniable innovation in the work. Although this is not a themed exhibition it represents what and where Minnesota artists are in the present.
This body of work came to me in all directions. These artists meet the criteria of being masterful but their level of mastery spoke to me beyond the realm of materials. The sheer variety of approaches is impressive. Each artist is speaking to you in a singular voice. Do not walk away from this exhibition without hearing, seeing and feeling what is being said. Some works are sublime in beauty, others evoke memory, others seem impossible to decode. It is complex and sometimes not easy but always worth your time.
Extend an arm and meet these artists half way and be changed as I have been. The most an artist could ask for is that they made their voice heard and tomorrow their work will linger and soften the world or engage you to change it and that it lingers in your memory and you wonder why.
BETH THOMPSON
Class 2: Sculpture
BIOGRAPHY
Beth started working with clay in high school and continued to in college. She worked as a production potter for her high school ceramics instructor for two years. Beth received her Bachelor of Arts from Bemidji State University in graphic design/technical illustration, with a minor in business. Later she founded her own publishing company and created several magazines serving the northern Minnesota real estate industry. After selling the company, Beth moved to Minneapolis and got back into ceramics by taking classes at the Northern Clay Center, where she has been a studio artist since 2017. She studied with sculptor Beth Cavener at Studio 740 in Helena, Montana, from 2017-2021. Working under her direction as her assistant, she learned the entire process by assisting in all aspects of making Cavener’s work. Now she works full-time in her studio at Northern Clay Center and her home studio making work for exhibition and on commission.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
This year’s body of entries was a diverse mix of sculptural style, genre, subject and materials used. This diversity made my comparative decisionmaking very difficult. After spending many hours with the virtual entries, I chose the 21 works that best represented the criteria I was looking for. I was interested in quality of composition, the complexity, the use, choice and mastery of material, quality of construction, craftsmanship and its overall presentation. When viewing the works of art virtually, they needed to present themselves in an interesting or intriguing. Additional views were helpful to get an idea of the entire form. I ranked the works based on my subjective opinion on the items mentioned above. Many were just great works that showed the mastery with the material and are beautiful pieces overall.
SUYAO TIAN
Class 3: Watercolor/Gouache/Casein/Tempera
BIOGRAPHY
Suyao Tian is a professional artist based in the Twin Cities, Minn. She currently serves as adjunct faculty at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. She is the founder and owner of Viewpoint Gallery, an executive board member of Art Buddies and board member of the Northeast Minneapolis Arts Association (NEMAA). She earned her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Central Arkansas and her Master of Fine Arts from the Minneapolis College of Art and Design. In her professional artistic career, she works as an independent curator and water-based media abstract painter. She is represented by the Claire Oliver Gallery in New York City.
Her paintings have been featured in numerous group and solo exhibitions both nationally and internationally. Her paintings have been permanently collected by museum, institutions and renowned collectors, such as the North Dakota Museum of Art, the University of Minnesota and more. In the commercial art arena, she has worked with prestigious companies such as Target, Room & Board, MSP International Airport and BOND International Design Agency, among others.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
I seek artworks that bring a distinct voice, through a new perspective, subject matter or a personal and unique approach. The artist should demonstrate a strong desire and drive to create work that is not only skillful and innovative but also meaningful and impactful.
The artwork should convey a clear and compelling theme or message, engaging the viewer on a deeper level and prompting reflection, discussion or an emotional response. The visual impact of the piece is crucial; it should be striking and engaging, inviting thoughtful interaction. This requires a high level of technical proficiency, including mastery of materials, skillful application of techniques and meticulous attention to detail. Additionally, the presentation of the artwork is essential. It should be well-presented, enhancing the overall viewer experience.
TERRENCE PAYNE
Class 4: Drawings/Pastel
BIOGRAPHY
Terrence Payne is an American artist from the Midwest, currently residing in Minneapolis, Minnesota. He has exhibited his artwork in galleries, universities and museums throughout the United States, and his work is part of private, museum and corporate collections worldwide. Terrence's art has received critical acclaim and recognition from various publications such as Beautiful Decay, Juxtapoz, Dwell Magazine, Bust Magazine, It's Nice That, The Jealous Curator, Boooooom and the Minneapolis Star Tribune. In 2002, Terrence founded Rosalux Gallery, the longest-running artists' collective in Minneapolis, which has helped over 80 Minnesota artists achieve their artistic ambitions and further their studio careers. Terrence has been a leader at Rosalux since its inception.
Terrence Payne's art revolves around the theme of community and how people's relationships with each other shape their identities and actions. Using playful yet sophisticated oil pastel drawings, Terrence creates archetypical portraits of various individuals that, when put together, represent different segments of communities and their relationships. He uses a visual language that is easy to understand, along with refined organic forms, patterns, text and costumes to create a connection with his audience based on shared experiences. Terrence unifies his work using a single pattern to identify the overall theme of the community, allowing the figures, objects and narratives to define the individuals within it. The humorous and empathetic allegories in his creations may leave more questions than answers, but they undoubtedly offer entertaining comforts for his audience.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
Ever since I arrived in Minnesota in the mid-1990s, I have heard artists here speak of the Minnesota State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition with complete awe and reverence, often calling it "a big deal." I have been fortunate enough to participate in and attend many of the annual exhibitions since then, and I have come to agree that it is indeed an awe-inspiring event. Each year, I have been impressed by this exhibition's unique character, I always find myself drawn to the distinctive charms that this exhibit delivers year after year.
The artworks submitted this year were no exception to this long tradition of excellence. It was difficult to narrow down the selections for display this year, as the expressive and earnest points of view showcased were of exceptional quality. The works I selected stood out because of the evident joy the artists had in creating their art, which left a lasting impression on me after viewing their drawings. The selections I made represent a diverse range of individual points of view, reflecting the variety that one would expect to encounter at the fair. However, they are all linked together by the artists' love of their craft and community pride.
GWEN PARTIN
Class 5: Printmaking
BIOGRAPHY
Gwen Partin is a printmaker, drawer and book artist working from her studio in the Northrup King Building in Northeast Minneapolis. She received her MFA in printmaking from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco, and her Bachelor of Arts in studio art in printmaking and drawing from Sonoma State University. She is currently a member of Form + Content Gallery. Her work has been in numerous one-person and group exhibitions (including the Penny George Institute for Health and Healing at Abbott Northwestern Medical Clinic; Catherine G. Murphy Gallery, St. Catherine University; the Katherine E. Nash Gallery, University of Minnesota) and has work in both public and private collections. She was a graphic designer, illustrator and educator preceding an early retirement to pursue her art practice full-time.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
My primary criteria for selection were mastery of technique, design and visual intrigue. I also looked at the following as guides for my selections. I’m excited when I see the printmaking medium stretched a little beyond its boundaries or in unique ways new to my eye. I’m intrigued when techniques are combined, making challenges for the artists and viewers alike. Formal aspects of color, composition and form must come across as a whole visual experience and be thoughtfully considered. I gravitate toward the pieces where I can tell how much work a person put into it with their own hands, be it drawing on a lithostone, carving a huge wood block or wiping a printing plate, versus using mechanical production methods.
SUSAN FEIGENBAUM
Class 6: Ceramics/Glass
BIOGRAPHY
Susan Feigenbaum is a ceramic artist and educator based in the Twin Cities. Her sculpture is shown in exhibitions, galleries and year-round at the Northrup King Building in the Northeast Minneapolis Arts District. She has received commissions and awards in local, regional and international juried exhibitions. Her public artwork is featured in a permanent installation at the Eden Prairie Outdoor Center. An exhibit of Susan’s current work will open October 2024 in Terminal 1, Gallery F4, at the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport.
Susan is a four-time recipient of an Arts Learning Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) and brought clay learning adventures to residents in senior communities. She is a graduate of the Minnesota New Institute for Ceramic Education (MN NICE) professional certification program, received a Jerome Project Grant for Ceramic Artists, was awarded an Artist Initiative Grant from the Minnesota State Arts Board (MSAB) and taught at the Eden Prairie Art Center. She has been a juror for public sculpture programs, art exhibitions and served as an MSAB grant review panelist.
As a student, Susan began her lifelong interest in art at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Awarded an academic scholarship to the University of Illinois, she majored in graphic design and later moved to the Twin Cities to build a business. Initially, clay was an escape from the computerized world of graphic design. Making ceramic sculpture is now her primary pursuit.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
It was a rewarding experience to jury the entries in the 2024 ceramics and glass class. Making selections for the exhibition was a difficult task as there were many excellent entries and I only wish I had been able to include more work.
While reviewing the entries, I based my decisions on the overall quality, skill and creativity displayed in the artwork. I looked for the mastery of materials and techniques, a sense of purposeful intent and confidence in execution, the interaction of forms with space, composition, surface detail and use of color.
Beyond the success of technical elements, I found enduring qualities in pieces that transcended first impressions and brought me back many times for more reflection. Each successful work expresses the artist’s unique vision, the clear communication of a concept, and often quite simply, the artist’s joy in the creative process. Thank you all for creating and sharing your art.
TIA KEOBOUNPHENG
Class 7: Textiles/Fiber
BIOGRAPHY
Tia Keobounpheng (b. 1977 Virginia, Minn.) is a multidisciplinary artist of Finnish and Sámi descent based in Minneapolis, Minn. Her abstract “unwoven” tapestries break apart traditional craft methods as a means of practicing decolonization as a white woman in America. In 2000, she earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in architecture from the University of Minnesota and has spent more than two decades exploring at the intersection of design, craft and art. Tia earned Artist Initiative and Creative Support Grants from the Minnesota State Arts Board in 2017/2020/2021, Next Step Fund Grants from the McKnight Foundation through the Metropolitan Regional Arts Council in 2018/2023 and a Folk Art and Cultural Traditions Grant from the American Scandinavian Foundation in 2023. Her solo exhibition REVEALING THREADS at the Minneapolis Institute of Art (Mia) was on view July-October 2023. Tia’s work is part of the permanent collections of Mia, The Minnesota Museum of American Art, The North Dakota Museum of Art, the University of St. Thomas and numerous private collections in Minneapolis, Milwaukee, New York City, Washington, D C , Miami, Albuquerque, Lake Tahoe and Los Angeles. Her large-scale custom commission was installed at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., in August 2024.
CRITERIA STATEMENT
When it comes to art, I think there are some measures that apply universally to all types of art, the first being: The work spoke to me, made me feel something, pause or inspired curiosity. Materials, technique, composition, color, movement, expression all lend themselves to distinct artistic voices in every medium. So, all of those criteria also apply to textiles/fiber. The general challenge fiber artists face is navigating the long-standing division of art and craft. With the Creative Activities Building just down the road, filled with the most technically skilled examples of traditional fiber work in the state, fiber artists applying to the Fine Arts Exhibition have the extra unique challenge of distinguishing their fiber work for the Fine Arts Center The distinguishing criteria for me, when judging this year's work, was concept. I wanted to be able to recognize that the work was driven by a conceptual idea, perspective or statement... in addition to the other factors.
BRETT KALLUSKY
Class 8: Photography
BIOGRAPHY
Brett Kallusky is a professor and chair of the Art Department at the University of Wisconsin-River Falls where he teaches photography.
He has been the recipient of two Minnesota State Arts Board grants, a Fulbright Grant to Italy, and a Fulbright Travel Grant. He has been a finalist for the McKnight Artist fellowship several times and his work has been exhibited regionally, nationally and internationally in solo and group exhibitions. Kallusky has been a regular portfolio reviewer at SPE (Society for Photographic Education) national conferences since 2012 and is now a member of the national Board of Directors of SPE. His most recent book, Landfill: Elegy for the Santa Maria Valley, was published in 2022 by George Thompson Publishing.
He lives and maintains his studio practice in Minneapolis, Minn
CRITERIA STATEMENT
I spent nine hours reviewing 939 submissions with the task of narrowing them down to 112 accepted works.
When reviewing the submitted photographs for the MN State Fair Fine Arts Exhibition I found it relatively easy to pick the strongest, initially. Those were photographs with thoughtful compositions, excellent technical skills in terms of color balance or tonal range, lighting, and compelling content. It was relatively easy to reject the works that lacked those qualities too. I spent the most time digging into the last 40 accepted photographs.
There were easily another 80 submitted photographs that met the criteria, but had one or two minor flaws that did not work in their favor in such a competitive exhibition

ARTISTS
DAYS
This special exhibition provides a window into the practicing artists’ studio to see the labor of art-making in action. Great art objects rarely tumble out as perfect, crystalline, materpieces, but rather are the result of hours of intense activity, reworking, deliberation, and research. We invited the twelve participating artist to use their time in our gallery as a twelve-hour working studio day. In addition, they have all set aside time during this working day to actively interact with our viewers: this may be talking about the piece they are working on specifically, speaking about their past work or practices, or simply fielding questions. Each artist’s day is self-contained.
As media and practices vary from artist to artist, expect each day to be unique.

SUNGHEE MIN
Currently based in the Twin Cities, Sunghee Min is a metal artist who specializes in public art sculptures. Sunghee Min was born in and grew up in rural South Korea and later moved to San Francisco, Calif to study sculpture and installation art at the Academy of Art University. After graduating in 2000, she established her art career as a metal artist in San Francisco's Bayview Arts District. Since moving to Minnesota in 2016, she has been focusing on making public art. Her work is rooted in process and can be described as minimalist, abstract and geometrical. Using manufactured metal sheets, bars and other shaped products in steel, stainless steel and aluminum, she builds her objects cumulatively by jointing smaller parts into a larger structure. Sunghee’s sculptures are constructed solely by herself, utilizing structural elements to build volume with minimal material in order to keep her process sustainable. Geometry is the theme that ties Sunghee’s work. She uses geometrical shapes for their simplicity and universal familiarity. With Sunghee Min’s specialty in large-scale metal sculptures, many of her works have been displayed in public outdoor exhibits across the Midwest.
TAMARA AUPAUMUT
Tamara Aupaumut is a self-taught multidisciplinary artist living on Mni Sota Makoce. She descends from the Stockbridge-Munsee Band of Mohican Indians, the Oneida Nation and the Brothertown Indian Nation. Aupaumut's intuitive, contemplative and experimental creative process involves applying a variety of contemporary and traditional Native disciplines to execute her concepts, with her cultural heritage and ancestors being an integral force behind her research and artistic work. She is a recipient of a 2020 Mitakuye Oyasin Award and a 2022 Next Step Fund. Tamara is working on a collection of multidisciplinary works, This Land Is My Body, that speaks to the healing connection between the land and our bodies.
STANLEY LEONARD
Inspired by nature and wildlife, Stanley Leonard, uses traditional techniques to create limited editions of hand-carved woodcut relief prints.
LINDSAY DOYLE
Lindsay is a natural ink artist who creates her own inks from botanical, industrial or organic substances that are found in wild and domestic places. These inks are then used to create abstract paintings that celebrate the intersections of art, nature and science. Through her experimentation she becomes more curious about colors and materials in the world around her, along with the chemical reactions they create when combined together. Natural inks are living inks and can shift in color over time due to their sometimes fugitive lightfast properties. Lindsay is fascinated by the fickle nature of these inks and views her work as playful experiments. Lindsay lives and works in Minneapolis.
MANDY PEDIGO
Mandy Pedigo is an artist based in Hopkins, whose work intertwines with the rich tradition of textiles, exploring themes of time, identity, history, memory and our connections to land and nature. Having moved to Minnesota in 2022, her migration to the water-rich lands deeply influences her art. Her pieces layer the familiarity and warmth of traditional crafts into contemporary expressions, reflecting on the essence of home and comfort in time-honored practices. Inspired by her great grandparents’ immigration from Finland and Sweden, Mandy's work echoes her family's deep love and connection to nature, blending historic bonds with new ones formed in Minnesota. Using weaving, quilting, embroidery and dye-work, she honors the histories and cultures of textiles, often linked to undervalued women's work. Mandy's art includes intimate abstracted aerial maps and miniature landscapes, exploring both familiar and uncharted places. Mandy holds a Master of Fine Arts, a Master of Arts in Education, and a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology. Her dedication and talent have earned her many accolades, including grants from the Handweavers’ Guild of America and the Surface Design Association.
RUSSELL HAMILTON

He worked as an assistant professor of art at Wayne State University, associate professor in the College of Arts and Creative Enterprises at Zayed University in Dubai/Abu Dhabi in the Unites Arab Emirates and currently as an associate professor at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design (MCAD).
KAO LEE THAO
Kao Lee Thao is the visual artist and 3D animator behind Inner Swirl. Her work is infused with an expressively fluid style, connecting our surroundings to patterns and motifs echoed throughout human existence.
As a Hmong American artist, she is balanced between two worlds; it is in these collisions that unique forms emerge. She is the first Hmong woman born in Minnesota who began her journey as her mother crossed the Mekong River escaping the jungles of Laos while cradled in her mother’s womb. Her family fled to America in 1976 with only $5 in their pocket to begin a new life. Due to persecution, Hmong women hand-sewed the written language with natural elements into costumes and traditional patterns keeping it a secret. While the written language has been lost, the patterns and customs still remain. Her abstract work is a symbol of her journey in America united with Hmong textiles and the symbology behind them. With every stroke she leaves behind a window into her soul, hoping to spark inspiration in others to transport viewers to a world of fantasy, reminding us not to forget imagination nourishes life.
MIKE WELTON
Since receiving a Bachelor of Arts in graphic design and then working as a desktop publisher I have naturally developed a sense of design with type and an appreciation for its connection with an audience. I have always painted from a nostalgic sense and recently from a personal and storytelling perspective.
Signs are also a way to connect to my audience using just one word, presenting it though style and color to convey a person’s past or experience. Many of my signs are from trips to other cities. In my most recent “Queen/-Queer” series. I took a photo out of Phoenix of an old “Queen Filter” sign that was all in white. I then transformed it by color and letter changes to express a whole other sign.
ARECA ROE
Areca Roe is an artist based in Mankato, Minn. She uses photography as well as video, sculpture and installation to explore the interface between the natural and human domains. Roe is an associate professor of photography and video at Minnesota State University, Mankato and a member of Rosalux Gallery, an artist collective in Minneapolis. Her work has been featured on several websites, including Lenscratch, Colossal, Slate, Juxtapoz, WIRED, National Geographic and Fast Company; as well as in print magazines Der Spiegel Wissen, Le Monde and The New Territory. Her work recently became part of the permanent collections at the Minnesota Museum of American Art and the Minnesota Historical Society. Roe has received several grants and fellowships supporting her work, including the Minnesota State Arts Board Artist Initiative Grant and the Art(ists) on the Verge Fellowship.
JIMMY LONGORIA
Jimmy Longoria, heralded as the vanguard of the Chicano Aesthetic in America's heartland, is a beacon of artistic excellence. He is the sole Chicano/Latino/Hispanic recipient of the esteemed Bush Foundation Artist Fellowship in Fine Art, showcasing his exceptional talent and creative vision. Honored with the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. “Living the Dream” Award, Longoria's dedication to social justice shines through his art, catalyzing positive change. His masterpieces adorn the sanctums of influential leaders, from U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor to Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, and Chicano art connoisseurs such as Cheech Marin. Within the Minnesota State Capitol, Longoria's works support the empowerment of the offices of Attorney General Keith Ellison and prominent state senators, symbolizing the fusion of art, culture and governance for a more inclusive society.
KATHARINE EKSUZIAN
Katharine Eksuzian is a ceramicist inspired by natural motifs. She strives to understand and depict the symbiotic relationships of our environment and the importance of its protection. As a self-taught artist, intense research and a literal hands-on approach to the clay medium has been essential. Her work is driven by a respect for nature and attention to intricate detail. With a focus on ecological themes, she creates scientifically accurate to-scale sculptures that are consciously crafted and completed in a high-fire soda kiln. Eksuzian holds strong beliefs in hand crafting each sculpture entirely out of clay to fully reflect the fragile nature concepts. Being an artist, there is always a need to create. Being able to do it in a way that has a positive impact is the true challenge and is the foundation of her work
LISA STAUFFER
Lisa received her Master’s in Design from the University of Minnesota and studied illustration at Parson’s School of Design. She works primarily in pastel, teaches painting workshops and competes in plein air painting competitions. She can be found painting all around town and far beyond.
