ith full hearts we look back at the year that was 2013, another year added to the history of MidAmerica Nazarene University.

“Be alert, be present. I’m about to do something brand new,” proclaims the prophet Isaiah. “It’s bursting out! Don’t you see it?” We do – we see it.

Memories. Accomplishments. Milestones.

We see renewed commitment to excellence in the burgeoning numbers of Honors Program students and pre-professional student accomplishments.

While each year is filled with things that make it unique, we also recognize the constants. Students, faculty and staff continue to witness the hand of God at work each day at MNU. Poignant questions about the intersection of faith and life. Challenging academic study that sparks debate and conversations about grace. Everyday situations where we witness the transforming work of Christian higher education.

We see new academic leadership at the highest level – evidence of God’s perfect timing and provision. We see faculty working together to create new academic programs.

highlights CAMPUS UPDATE Dr. Mary Jones, Ph.D., joins the university as Provost and Chief Academic Officer. New academic programs are added for traditional undergraduate and graduate students: → Middle Level Science Education → Master of Science in Management → Master of Education in Adaptive Special Education → Post-MSN Nursing Certificates The School of Nursing and Health Science benefits from a $84,980 grant from the John W. and Effie E. Speas Memorial Trust. These funds, along with a $150,000 gift from Olathe Medical Center, are used to double the usable space of the Nursing Skills Lab in Cook Center.

The School of Education adds another significant achievement with alumna Dyane Smokorowski (’07) earning the 2013 KS Teacher of the Year award. The 2013 Olathe Mayor’s Christmas Card features artwork by junior Ashley Rogers, a graphic design major in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Associated Student Government (ASG) hosts approximately 130 student leaders for Nazarene Student Leadership Conference.

MNU Night at Sporting KC

MNU’s Office of Alumni Relations adds MNU Night at Sporting KC, a sell-out event. The alumni ski trip and Great Wolf Lodge event also have record attendance.

Master of Arts in Counseling - graduates in School of Behavioral Sciences and Counseling earn a 100% pass rate on the national counselor exam. MNU’s Honors Program for traditional undergraduate students graduates its first four students. The graduates completed bachelor’s degrees in just three years and all were accepted into graduate programs.

in photos At the beginning of the year, junior accounting major Michael Fast lands his dream job setting up radio equipment at Super Bowl XLVII in New Orleans (1). Pioneer Pete is introduced at halftime of the final home basketball game in February (2). Weeks later the Pioneer men’s basketball team advances to the quarterfinals (3). In April, the President’s Honors gala raises more than $450,000 for student scholarships in a single evening (4), and later thirty students from MNU’s sports management program facilitate a Fuel Up to Play 60 Rewards Training Camp at Arrowhead stadium (5).

We celebrated with nearly 700 students during graduation weekend in May (6). In July, the School of Nursing and Health Science receives a $100,000 grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (7), and Dr. Mary Jones, Ph.D., joins MNU as Provost and Chief Academic Officer (8).

An entirely new MNU.edu website launches in August (9), and more than 400 students, faculty, staff and community members participate in the Blaze Prayer Walk at the start of the new academic year (10).From California to New York, people tweet and share the inspiring story of MNU’s own Frances Wood, who returned to college at age 82. Her honorary “Granny Homecoming Queen” award goes viral and winds up on the Today Show (11). Fall also brings the popular MNU Alumni BBQ competition, a highlight of Homecoming weekend (12). MNU’s own Rebekah Bruton (‘14) charms audiences as Annie Oakley in the Department of Fine & Performing Arts production of “Annie Get Your Gun” (13).
