MANNY LAGOS SPORTING DIRECTOR
Born: June 11, 1971, in St. Paul, MN Previously: Minnesota United (Head Coach)
ML
Manny Lagos was appointed as the first Sporting Director in club history in January of 2016. Lagos was previously the Head Coach of Minnesota United, taking the helm in 2010, and accrued a 7852-59 record in his six seasons, including winning the 2011 NASL championship. The youngest of eight children, Manny began his professional career as a member of the Minnesota Thunder, where he played for seven years along side his brother Gerard while being coached by his father, Buzz, who founded the team. He scored 29 goals with the Thunder and in 1994 was named the USL MVP as he netted 18 goals while providing nine assists. Prior to leaving to play in MLS, he and his brother were inducted into the USL Hall of Fame.
Lagos is a two-time winner of the NASL’s Coach of the Year award, given to the best coach in the league as voted on by the media. His first came in 2011, when he led Minnesota from barely making the playoffs to win the Soccer Bowl. He earned the award again in 2014 as United won both the Spring and Combined Season Championships. In his final season, Lagos put together the most successful offensive team in the modern era of the NASL, scoring a record 55 goals. He led the squad to the postseason for the fifth time in six seasons, qualifying by virtue of having the best remaining record, not including the Spring and Fall Champions. Now entering a new role with the club, Lagos will focus on building a team that will be able to compete in MLS. The core of the team was built under his leadership the past few seasons, and now he is looking to add top talent to the roster.
New S tadi u m NA SL
He retired from professional soccer in June 2005. He entered the administrative side of the sport in January 2006, when he assumed the role of Director of Soccer Operations for the Thunder, where he emphasized youth development. An occasional broadcaster, he served as color commentator for XM Radio during the 2006 World Cup.
U. S. Open Cup
During the inaugural MLS season in 1996, Manny joined the NY/NJ MetroStars. He went on to play for five MLS clubs in his career: the MetroStars, Chicago Fire, Tampa Bay Mutiny, San Jose Earthquakes, and Columbus Crew.
Med ia I n fo
Lagos also received attention at the national level as a member of the 1992 U.S. Olympic team. He scored the winning goal in a 3-1 victory over Kuwait, the U.S. team’s only victory of the tournament. He also had three appearances for the National Team under the leadership of legendary coach Bruce Arena.

CARL CRAIG HEAD COACH
CC
Born: June 11, 1971, in Newcastle, England Previously: Minnesota United (Assistant Coach)
Carl Craig joined the Minnesota coaching staff in early March 2010 after a long history coaching youth soccer in Minnesota. He acted as the Assistant Coach of the club under Manny Lagos for six seasons before taking over the helm in 2016. Craig grew up in Newcastle upon Tyne playing in the Newcastle United and Sunderland youth systems. Due to several injuries, he never made it to the professional level as a player. He remained in the Newcastle area, playing bass guitar in a punk rock band, before once again returning to soccer. He obtained full licensing through the English FA, USSF, and UEFA A license. He also gained licensing with the Dutch KNVB and the Italian Soccer Federation.
After the financial collapse of the Thunder, Craig was invited to join the staff of the newly formed NSC Minnesota Stars as a parttime assistant coach, with Lagos, and now retired player-coach Kevin Friedland. Craig quickly became a favorite among fans and players alike, inspiring the Stars to back-to-back appearances in the Soccer Bowl, winning it all in 2011. He remained on staff following the rebrand to Minnesota United. He became a full-time member of the coaching staff in 2014 and has been a key part of player development and building United’s roster. Now as Head Coach, Craig will look to build on the recent success of the club, with the ultimate goal of returning the Soccer Bowl Trophy to Minnesota.
New S tadi u m NA SL
Craig became involved with the Minnesota Thunder as a volunteer at tryouts, but was not a part of the staff.
U. S. Open Cup
He was also head coach of lower division clubs Twin City Phoenix of the Premier Development League and the Minnesota Blast of the National Premier Soccer League.
Med ia I n fo
Craig moved to the United States in 1994 after getting involved in Educational Sports Programs, now Coerver Coaching. He has coached for many Minnesota associations, including Eden Prairie Soccer Club, Minneapolis United, Westside FC, Wings Soccer Club, Shattuck-St. Mary’s, Minneapolis South High School, and Richfield High School.

Minnesota United have added Venezuelan youth international Bernardo Añor on a season-long loan from Sporting Kansas City during the 2016 preseason. Añor came up through Caracas FC academy, the most successful club in Venezuelan history. He came to the U.S. in 2007 to play college soccer with the University of South Florida and was named a Freshman All-American. After an injury his sophomore year, he returned to lead USF to an appearance in the NCAA College Cup. The winger signed with the Columbus Crew in 2011 to begin a fouryear term with the team. His tenure began with sporadic playing time, before becoming a lineup regular in 2013. He blasted in 12 goals for the Crew and had three assists before transferring to Sporting Kansas City in 2015. He made 13 appearances for Sporting in his first season with the club. Añor represented Venezuela at the youth level, playing for both the U15 and U20 National Teams.

Banks, a pacey midfielder with excellent distribution, joined Minnesota prior to the 2015 season after playing with the Rochester Rhinos. The 26-year-old spent his college career with University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, where he received several accolades. In 2009, Banks was named the Horizon League Player of the Year and the following season was an All-League First Team and All-Great Lakes Second Team member. During college, the Milwaukee native also played for the Madison 56ers of the NPSL and Chicago Fire Premier of USL PDL. Banks was selected eighth overall in the 2011 MLS Supplemental Draft by Toronto FC before signing with Rochester. He was named Rookie of the Year by the team after an impressive first season. In 2012, Banks led USL PRO with eight assists and was named Rochester’s Most Valuable Player. He was again named MVP in 2014 after netting a career-high nine goals and providing three assists. Banks made 78 appearances while scoring 17 goals for the Rhinos. J.C. is the son of former U.S. National Team defender Jimmy Banks. Jimmy had 36 appearances for the U.S., including the 1990 World Cup. Both J.C. and his father have played for the Milwaukee Wave of the Professional Arena Soccer League.

Calvano has been a mainstay in the Minnesota back line for the past two seasons. His experience and leadership have led the Loons to back-to-back playoff appearances and helped develop the younger players on the team. He has been named to the NASL Team of the Week three times during his first two years with Minnesota. His performance in 2014 earned him a spot in the NASL Best XI.

After three years in Germany playing for MSV Duisburg and Fortuna Düsseldorf, Tiago made the move to Australia, where he played with the Newcastle Jets from 2011 to 2012. He was a big part of the Jets’ 2011 campaign but was transferred prior to the 2012 season to Sydney FC. Calvano had less of an impact with Sydney, as his playing time was reduced significantly from previous years.
U. S. Open Cup
Calvano moved to Europe in 2004-05 to play with FC Barcelona’s reserve team. After two years in Spain, he moved to the Swiss top-flight team BSC Young Boys, where he played for three years, recording 86 appearances.
Med ia I n fo
A veteran central defender who joined Minnesota United in the 2014 season, Tiago Calvano added another critical piece towards building a championship-caliber roster. The 33-year-old is a 6-foot-2 central defender who began his playing career in 2001 in his native Rio de Janeiro playing for Botafogo, a club playing in Brazil’s Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.

Cruz was traded to DC United prior to the 2012 season and played half a season with the club before once again being traded to the Philadelphia Union. He was a key part of the Union lineup, making more than 30 appearances for the club in both 2013 and 2014. Cruz played a part in Philly’s 2014 U.S. Open Cup run, ending in a runner-up finish to the Seattle Sounders. In 2015, Cruz went out on loan with FK Bodø/Glimt in Norway’s Tippeligaen. He made 16 appearances and scored twice as the team finished ninth in the league.
H i sto r y New S tadi u m NA SL
He was drafted 31st overall by the Houston Dynamo in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft and made his professional debut on March 29th of that year. Cruz made 54 appearances for the Dynamo and scored four goals, one of which sent his team to the 2011 MLS Cup Playoffs.
U. S. Open Cup
Cruz was on the radar of U.S. Soccer from a young age, playing for the U17 National Team at the 2007 U17 World Cup. He once again represented his country in 2008 and 2009 with the U20 National Team. When he wasn’t training with the U.S., Cruz played two years with the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, winning conference Newcomer of the Year his freshman season. The winger also spent the 2008 season with the Des Moines Menace, where he shared the field with current Loon Justin Davis.
Med ia I n fo
After several years in MLS, Cruz joined Minnesota in February of 2016. Precision and powerful shots have made Cruz a deadly attacking player. Threading impossible passes across goal and bending shots from distance, he causes confusion in the back line and is not afraid to take defenders on. He is an unselfish player, providing nearly equal amounts of assists and goals in his career.

After an outstanding career as an attacking player in college, Justin Davis made the transition to left back as a rookie with Minnesota in 2011, quickly nailing down the starting job. Davis’ transition into defense has given United a dynamic option at outside back, as Davis and his right-sided counterpart Kevin Venegas make frequent forays forward to join the attack. Davis was one of the top defensive players in the NASL in 2015. He was the highest-scoring defender in the league and was once again named to the NASL Best XI. Davis is currently the club leader in minutes played, logging over 12,000 minutes for United. Davis has spent his entire professional career in Minnesota, after playing amateur soccer with the Des Moines Menace. He and Andrei Gotsmanov are the only remaining members of the 2011 Soccer Bowl winning team. He is one of seven players on Minnesota’s current roster who have made the NASL Best XI in their careers, and one of the three who have had the honor multiple times.

After training with the club through most of the season, Gotsmanov signed with United during the 2015 Fall Season. The 29-year-old played four seasons with the Creighton Bluejays before being drafted 24th overall in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft by the New England Revolution. Later that year, he signed with the Minnesota Thunder. Despite making only one appearance for the Thunder, Gotsmanov stayed in Minnesota to join the newly formed NSC Minnesota Stars. He was a regular in the lineup through 2010 and was a key part of the 2011 Championship team, scoring a crucial goal in the semifinals. Gotsmanov has several ties to Minnesota beyond previously playing for the team. His father Sergey, a legendary player for the Soviet Union national team and four-time Belarus Footballer of the Year, and brother Sasha have both played for the Minnesota Thunder in their careers. During his two years with the Stars, Gotsmanov has scored three goals and had six assists in 44 appearances.

Ibson was loaned back to Flamengo on a three-year deal. At the time, Flamengo was sitting in a relegation spot, but Ibson helped spur the team to complete an incredible comeback and finish third in the league. For his performance, Ibson was selected to the Brasileiro Série A Team of the Year. He was a regular starter and put up a career-high 15 goals in a season in 2008. His total scoring tally reached 22 by the time he left the club in 2009. The midfielder made the long journey to Russia where he joined Spartak Moscow late in the 2009 season. Ibson had a spectacular 2010 season, which included two goals in the UEFA Champions League against Slovakian side MŠK Žilina. Ibson finally returned to Brazil in 2011, and over the next three years, played for Brazilian giants Santos FC, Corinthians, and once again returned to Flamengo. In 2015, Ibson was one of the key weapons in the midfield for United, building from the back and distributing the ball up the field to create chances. He was one of United’s top scorers that year.

After training with the youth squads of Flamengo in Brazil, Ibson joined the senior team in 2003. He was joined by fellow Loon Juliano Vicentini the following season, where the midfielder made 44 appearances and scored six goals for the club. During the 2004-2005, season he transferred to Portuguese giants FC Porto, becoming a featured part of the lineup in league play. He made his first UEFA Champions League appearances with the club and through 2007 made a total of 56 appearances while scoring twice.

The 32-year-old specializes in the attacking role in midfield, getting forward to take advantage of short clearances and to crash the net along with the forwards. As his career has progressed, Ibson has been adapting to a more defensive role.
Med ia I n fo
Ibson signed with Minnesota prior to the 2015 season after an already impressive career with clubs across Brazil and Europe. He was one of the top point-producing midfielders in the league last year and was a big part of Minnesota’s transitional play.

Jordan was signed by Minnesota after trialing with the team during the 2014 preseason. Like several of his teammates, Jordan played for Creighton University before being drafted in the 2012 MLS SuperDraft by the Philadelphia Union. Though he never appeared in MLS, Jordan did see time with the Union’s affiliate team, the Harrisburg City Islanders, in the USL. Jordan was used as a holding midfielder, aiding in the transition from defense to offense when winning the ball. When he joined Minnesota, Jordan filled in as a mainly defensive player, joining Juliano Vicentini in the midfield. Jordan acted as a great set-up player, providing three assists in his first year, getting two in one match. Jodran has done much of the yeoman’s work in the midfield, providing lots of hustle to win the ball defensively and build the attack. Not afraid to put his body on the line, Jordan is one of the hardest-working players on the pitch.

The younger brother of former Minnesota vice-captain Brian Kallman, Brent is an up-and-coming member of United. He brings pace to the club’s central defense, a needed skill to track down speedy attacking players. He played collegiately at Creighton University before signing for his hometown club in 2013. Kallman has been working his way into the lineup and is expected to play a big role for United this season. Kallman made eight appearances for Minnesota last season and tallied his first professional goal last fall. He brings youth and raw talent to an experienced Minnesota defense and will be looking to make a more permanent place for himself in the starting XI. His height allows him to win aerial balls with ease, helping protect Minnesota’s goal and create chances on offensive set pieces.

The Fort Lauderdale Strikers signed Laing prior to the 2011 NASL season, bringing him on as a defender. Laing led the Strikers on a strong run in the regular season and made a push in the playoffs that landed them a spot in the Soccer Bowl where they were defeated by Minnesota. Laing played two years with the Strikers, netting two goals in 44 appearances. Laing then traveled north to sign with FC Edmonton for the 2013 season. Another solid defensive year earned him the honor of Team MVP, voted on by supporters. Starting a season of transition for Laing, in 2014 he made the switch from defense to midfield. It proved to be an excellent fit as he led the Eddies with seven goals and was second in the league in assists with six. 2015 was another banner year for Laing, who was a top-ten goal scorer in the League and tied for second in assists. He was the only player not on a playoff team to be named to the Best XI that year.

Laing joined Minnesota in December of 2015 as the team began preparation for the 2016 season. The 27-year-old has played in every NASL season since the modern-era league formed in 2011 and is the only player to be named to the NASL Best XI three times. He is tied for 15th and tied for third in all-time goals and assists, respectively.

Standing at 6’3”, the young defender possesses lots of raw talent and has the pace to close down attacking players. He has shown to be valuable for set pieces as well, getting to several balls during the preseason tournament in Portland, and netting a goal against the Vancouver Whitecaps. The Jamaican grew up in Kingston playing for Harbour View, one of United midfielder Lance Laing’s former teams. He played one year in the Premier Development League with Reading United before signing with the Sounders in 2014. Lowe was loaned to Sounders 2 in the USL for the 2015 season. He helped the club reach the playoffs in its first season, with Lowe appearing 17 times, scoring a goal and providing an assist. He was also apart of Sounders 2’s U.S. Open Cup run, defeating Kitsap Pumas and Portland Timbers 2 before falling to Real Salt Lake in the Fourth Round. Lowe first played with United on trial during the 2016 Simple Invitation, a preseason tournament hosted by the Portland Timbers of MLS. After an impressive performance, which included a goal against the Vancouver Whitecaps, he joined Minnesota on loan from Seattle.

Daniel Mendes joined United on loan from Kalmar FF of the Allsvenskan (Swedish Premier League), before the 2014 season. Mendes then extended his stay by signing a contract with Minnesota during the 2014 Fall Season. Before playing in Sweden, Mendes learned his craft in the youth academies of Corinthians (in his native São Paulo) and Juventus. He is a proven goal scorer, with 55 goals in 165 games in Sweden, mostly with Kalmar. His accomplishments include scoring the fastest goal ever scored in the Allsvenskan, at 6.4 seconds. He earned a reputation as a super sub, scoring all his goals while at AIK off the bench. Mendes, along with Miguel Ibarra and Christian Ramirez, combined for 37 goals in 2014, which was more than six NASL teams scored total. He remained a starter in his second season with the club, playing off of the defensive backs to open up the flanks and serve balls into middle.

Ndjock signed with United after trialing with the squad during the 2015 preseason. He perfected his craft working through Lille’s youth program in France. He then joined the team’s reserve squad, Lille II, before traveling to Turkey to play with Antalyaspor. To get more playing time, Ndjock was loaned to Fethiyespor, where he was a regular starter. His performances with the club got noticed by the Cameroonian National Team, earning him a spot on the 2014 FIFA World Cup roster. Ndjock’s sweeper keeper style and distribution has allowed United to play higher up the pitch and sustain offensive pressure. In his first year in Minnesota, he was able to keep the Loons in many games by pulling off impossible saves and commanding his defensive area. Ndjock’s awareness and physical abilities will continue to be huge assets for United in the upcoming season.

Perez joined United during the 2016 preseason. He established himself as a solid backup for the Orange County Blues of the USL during his time with the club, filling in as the starter for an extended period in 2014. The 6-foot-4 keeper is a massive presence in goal and has a powerful kick that gives him incredible range for distribution of the ball. He has had a very unique journey to Minnesota, spending much of his career as a punter in football. After playing goalkeeper through high school, Perez was asked to kick for the school’s team. He quickly found success and received offers to play for more than 20 Division 1 programs. Perez ultimately chose to attend UCLA, where he set school records with 286 punts and 12,220 career punting yards. Perez had short stints with both the New England Patriots and the Miami Dolphins in the National Football League (NFL) before returning to soccer in 2012. After playing a year with the Pali Blues, he signed with the Orange County Blues in 2013, known at the time as the LA Blues. Perez made a handful of appearances in his first season, including an Open Cup match against Chivas USA of MLS.

Minnesota United bolstered its record-setting offense by signing Brazilian forward Stefano Pinho prior to the 2016 seasoj. 2013 saw Pinho make his first trip to the U.S. to participate in the MLS Combine. He was the top striker at the Combine and was drafted by the Colorado Rapids in the 2013 SuperDraft, but was unable to reach an agreement with the club. In 2014, Pinho was once again loaned out, this time to MYPA in the Finnish Veikkausliiga. He found his scoring touch with the club, netting 11 goals in 20 appearances, which he would carry over to his next loan move with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. Pinho made a name for himself in the NASL last year during his time with the Fort Lauderdale Strikers. His 16 goals led the NASL last year and earned him the 2015 Golden Boot for most goals during the season. With seven assists on the year as well, Pinho proved to be a vital part of the Strikers success, which led to him receiving the 2015 Golden Ball Award as the league’s most valuable player. Pinho was also honored with a spot in the 2015 NASL Best XI and made the Team of the Week seven times while being named Player of the Week four times.

Pitchkolan established himself as a leader in Minnesota when he took the role of team captain in 2013. After winning the 2012 regular season championship with the San Antonio Scorpions, Aaron Pitchkolan signed with Minnesota in January 2013, giving United options in both central midfield and central defense and years of experience across the American professional soccer landscape. Last season he mainly fulfilled his duties on defense, pairing with Tiago Calvano at centerback. Pitchkolan’s aerial ability protected the United goal, helping the team earn seven clean sheets last season. Pitchkolan has played all cross the top levels of American soccer. He was drafted in the second round of the 2005 MLS Supplemental Draft by FC Dallas. He played five years with Dallas, making 68 appearances and scoring five goals. He was traded to the San Jose Earthquakes midway through 2009. He found success in the second division, playing nearly every match for the Rochester Rhinos in 2010, leading the team to the regular season title. Pitchkolan was a key part of the Puerto Rico Islanders in the inaugural NASL season, helping his team to a semifinal appearance.

With four years of MLS experience, Speas signed for United in February of 2016. The attacking midfielder added considerable depth to Minnesota’s already potent offense, but also offers valuable defensive play. Speas had an impressive college career, winning the NCAA College Cup in back-to-back seasons with the University of Akron in 2010 and University of North Carolina in 2011. His game-winner in the 2011 final earned him the College Cup MVP award. Speas developed in the Columbus Crew academy and, in 2012, he signed a Homegrown Player contract with the club. He made his professional debut on the final day of the 2012 season, with a 2-1 Columbus win over Toronto FC. Speas made 41 appearances for the Crew over his four seasons with the club, scoring two goals and providing four assists. The 25-year-old also gained international experience early in his career. He was part of the U.S. Soccer Residency program and made 10 appearances for the U17 National Team in 2007. He was also called in to train with the U18 and U20 National Teams.

Joining the team in 2012 as a midfielder, Venegas has proven to be a versatile piece of the Minnesota lineup. Initially starting out as a left-side midfielder, but Venegas made the transition to a right back. Though he plays a more defensive role, he still has significant influence on offensive play. Kevin Venegas left a lasting impact on the North American Soccer League by winning the Goal of the Year Award in 2012 with his first career goal. Capable of playing on either wing or on defense, Venegas possesses a powerful right foot. He has been the main outside right defender for United since 2013, giving his team extra offensive options as well as great tracking and defensive prowess. Venegas continued his pairing with Justin Davis as outside defenders in 2015. He tied the club single-season assist record and scored two key goals to secure points for Minnesota. Venegas has been one of the fastest members of the squad in recent years, with a bit of flair to fake out opponents.

Brazilian midfielder Juliano Vicentini joined Minnesota United during the 2014 preseason from São Paulo Audax Sports Club. A veteran with experience in Brazilian and Italian leagues, Vicentini was brought in to provide leadership and creativity. Vicentini used years of experience to control the midfield for United every time he was on the pitch. His defensive role allowed him to distribute the ball to all areas of the field. He is not afraid to pull the trigger from distance, having scored several spectacular goals from long range, forcing the opposition to constantly be on its toes when he has the ball.

After helping Minnesota to a runner-up finish, he returned to Orlando where he led the Lions in assists during the 2013 season and the championship. Watson returned to Minnesota prior to the 2014 season. His 2015 campaign was cut short due to a torn ACL in the Spring Season, but he is fully fit for 2016.
U. S. Open Cup
Watson played with Orlando City for several years, playing against the Minnesota Thunder and Stars. He earned a caustic reputation with Minnesota fans, but acrimony became devotion when Watson spent a loan stretch with the Stars in 2012.

Hailing from Arlington, Texas, Watson has extensive experience in just about every part of the American soccer pyramid. Drafted in 2005 by Real Salt Lake of Major League Soccer (MLS), Watson has played and scored in each of the top four U.S. soccer leagues, as well as internationally with the United States U17 team.

DR. BILL MCGUIRE OWNER
Dr. McGuire completed medical school at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston after completing his undergraduate studies at the University of Texas. As Chairman and CEO of United Health Group, Dr. McGuire grew the health care company from $400 million to more than $70 billion in annual revenue. Before Dr. McGuire purchased the team, Minnesota soccer was in jeopardy. After the NASL took over the team in 2011, the team won the league’s first championship, but was still on the verge of folding. Then-league commissioner David Downs reached out to Dr. McGuire to save the team. Interested in seeing the team for himself, Dr. McGuire and now-club President Nick Rogers attended several games, culminating in the home leg of the 2012 Soccer Bowl. Inspired by the atmosphere and excitement of the fans, Dr. McGuire purchased the team following the 2012 season. McGuire began grooming the team for success, using inspiration from a visit to Bayern Munich, one of Germany’s top clubs, to guide his course of action. The following March, the team was rebranded as Minnesota United FC. McGuire went to work to build the team not only to survive, but to thrive on and off the field, expanding the front office and building partnerships with local businesses. As the team’s accomplishments began to pile up, McGuire began working toward building an MLS franchise. He brought together an ownership group made up of Twins owner Jim Pohlad, Timberwolves owner Glen Taylor, and Carlson board member Wendy Carlson Nelson. The group began working with MLS to bring United to the highest level of the game in the U.S., and secure the future of soccer in Minnesota.
New S tadi u m NA SL
Showing his commitment to the community, Dr. McGuire‘s philanthropic efforts include donations to the Guthrie Theater, Walker Art Center, and Gold Medal Park.
U. S. Open Cup
Dr. McGuire and the ownership group have continued to raise the profile of the club and its community by building a privately funded, soccer-specific-stadium. The new stadium will revitalize the area, bringing in new corporate, retail, and residential spaces. The stadium will be completed for the 2018 season in the Midway neighborhood of St. Paul.
Med ia I n fo
On March 25, 2015, MLS awarded Minnesota United the league’s 23rd franchise. For McGuire, it was an emotional moment to see his team go from the brink of folding to the top league in North America in just two years.

Front-Office Staff
NICK ROGERS PRESIDENT
Nick was named President of Minnesota United FC in January 2013. The Maryland native earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Maryland before obtaining his Juris Doctor degree from the University of Minnesota Law School. A passionate soccer fan and avid Liverpool supporter, Nick was the driving force behind Dr. McGuire’s takeover of the team in January 2013, believing in the potential for top-tier professional soccer in Minnesota. Since taking over the team, Nick has grown the front office from four full-time employees to more than 40, created partnerships with other cities, and led the team to tremendous growth in attendance. Under Rogers’ leadership, the team has been as successful off the field as it has been on it. United has increased total attendance by 50 percent each of the past three seasons, selling out nine of its 16 home matches in 2015. The efforts put forth by Rogers and the front office have raised the profile of soccer in Minnesota, drawing global attention to the club. Rogers looks to build off the base of the success of the past several years as the club prepares for MLS. While the team plays what might be its final season in the NASL, Rogers is overseeing the transition to the first division of American soccer and getting ready to open the team’s new soccer-specific stadium in St. Paul.

HISTORY OF MINNESOTA SOCCER
History KICKS, STRIKERS, AND THE NASL The story of pro soccer in Minnesota began in 1976 with the arrival of the Minnesota Kicks in the original NASL. The Kicks quickly became the NASL’s most successful team, boasting an average attendance of 23,121, winning the Western Division, and finishing as the runner-up in the Soccer Bowl – all in the team’s first season. The Kicks were a dominant force in the NASL, becoming the first team to win their division four straight years and making the playoffs every season. Minnesota posted some of the top attendance numbers each season, peaking with an average of 32,775 in 1977. The team began to have financial troubles in the early 1980s, forcing the team to cease operations in 1981. The NASL returned to Minnesota with the relocation of the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in 1984. The Strikers played in the final NASL season before competing as an indoor team for several seasons.
RETURN OF PRO SOCCER It would be eleven years before a professional team competed in Minnesota again. The Minnesota Thunder, an amateur team from 1990 to 1994, joined the United States International Soccer League (USISL) in 1995. The Thunder won its division and reached the final in each of its first two seasons. The league rebranded to the United Soccer Leagues in 1999, and the change brought about new success for Minnesota. The team won the division and league title in 1999 and repeated the division title but fell in the league final in 2000. Following the 2009 season, the Thunder left the USL to form the reinstated North American Soccer League the following year, but the team folded in November of 2009.
L’ETOILE DU NORD Though the Thunder folded, soccer remained in Minnesota with the formation of NSC Minnesota Stars. The Stars competed in the provisional USSF D2 in 2010 before joining the NASL for its inaugural season in 2011. Despite being a league-owned club with

the smallest payroll in the league, the Stars won the 2011 Soccer Bowl and returned to the final in 2012 where they lost in penalty kicks.
Minnesota had another impressive year in 2015, scoring a record 53 goals. United was as successful off the pitch as it was on it, selling out nine home matches, including a friendly with Club Léon of Liga MX. The club made the playoffs for the fifth time in six years, but once again fell in the Championship Semifinal in extra time.
NA SL
The following off-season was another time of transition, but this time it was not a rebrand. On March 25, 2015, Minnesota United was announced as the 23rd team in Major League Soccer. Though the change will not be immediate, it was one that provided something rare to pro soccer in Minnesota: security.
U. S. Open Cup
2014 saw United’s investments in the future pay off. After winning the Spring Championship, Minnesota continued its dominance of the league and finished with the best overall record that season. The 2014 season featured record crowds at NSC Stadium for United victories over Mexico’s U-21 national team and Swansea City of the English Premier League, but came to an end with Minnesota being eliminated in the semifinals by Fort Lauderdale.
Med ia I n fo
Following the rebrand, the team added top NASL players to complement the returning core of the Stars roster. The first season saw the team struggle to come together on the pitch, finishing sixth and fourth in the Spring and Fall Seasons, respectively.

NEW STADIUM
New Stadium A NEW HOME FOR SOCCER IN MINNESOTA On February 24, 2016, Minnesota United FC unveiled stadium renderings for the new home of Major League Soccer in Minnesota. The approximately 20,000-seat stadium will boast the latest in amenities and technology while also being sustainably designed to minimize environmental impact and energy usage. Construction on the new facility is expected to be complete in time for the start of the 2018 MLS season. Minnesota United will finance the estimated $150 million stadium, with it becoming publicly owned when construction is complete. This world-class venue will not only offer fans an iconic professional soccer experience, but also provide our team with the necessary tools to establish themselves as a top-tier professional soccer club. This facility will be the cornerstone of professional soccer throughout our state and the North.

NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE
About the NASL NORTH AMERICAN SOCCER LEAGUE Minnesota United FC plays in the 12-team North American Soccer League (NASL), which also includes the Carolina RailHawks, FC Edmonton, Fort Lauderdale Strikers, Indy Eleven, Jacksonville Armada, New York Cosmos, Ottawa Fury FC, and the Tampa Bay Rowdies. Miami FC, Puerto Rico FC, and Rayo OKC joined the league in 2016 as expansion teams. The league continues the legacy of the original NASL that operated from 1968 through 1984. The league brought soccer to North America on a large scale for the first time, exciting thousands of fans each week with iconic teams and big-name players such as Pelé and Alan Willey. Three teams, the Strikers, Rowdies, and Cosmos, all have their roots in this era of the league, forming rivalries during that time that are alive and well today. The league was founded in 2010, with the first season taking place in 2011. Carolina, Ft. Lauderdale, Minnesota, and Tampa Bay, along with Montreal Impact (who later moved to MLS), Puerto Rico Islanders (who folded in 2012), and Atlanta Silverbacks (folded in 2015), were the founding members. The league added nine expansion teams over the five seasons, with the San Antonio team folding in 2015, to reach the current roster of clubs with plans for future expansion. The league began with a traditional regular season followed by playoff structure for the 2011 and 2012 seasons. Minnesota was able to reach the final in the first two seasons, winning the Soccer Bowl, the NASL’s championship, in 2011. In 2013, the NASL adopted a split-season format, dividing the year into the Spring and Fall Seasons, with the champion of each season meeting in the Soccer Bowl. This format was modified in 2014 by adding The Championship, the NASL’s four-team postseason tournament. The Championship contains the Spring and Fall Champions along with the two teams with the best remaining overall record from both seasons.
The past few seasons have seen the league raise its profile dramatically. With the resurrection of clubs from the original NASL and an influx of new owners who are dedicated to growing the game, the league has increased its quality both on and off the pitch. High-profile players, including Spanish legend RaĂşl, Ibson, and Freddy Adu, have given the league international exposure.
New S tadi u m NA SL
The 2016 season will continue to use the same spli- season format of the previous two seasons. The Spring Season will run from April through June, followed by a two-week break, and the Fall will pick up in July and go through October. The Championship will take place in early November.
U. S. Open Cup
2015 saw Minnesota challenge for a title once again, making the playoffs by finishing third in the Combined Standings. The team scored more goals than any team in modern NASL history, but fell short on winning the Spring or Fall Championship. United fell to the Ottawa Fury in extra time in The Championship Semifinal.
Med ia I n fo
Minnesota won the 2014 Spring and Combined Season Championships while setting the league record for most points in a season with 55. They scored 47 goals, with 37 of those coming from Christian Ramirez, Daniel Mendes, and Miguel Ibarra.

LAMAR HUNT U.S. OPEN CUP HISTORY
U.S. Open Cup HISTORY AND FORMAT Founded in 1914, the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, known as simply the U.S. Open Cup, is the oldest soccer tournament in America and the third-longest-running open soccer tournament in the world. The tournament follows a single elimination knockout format and consists of clubs from MLS, NASL, USL, and many amateur teams from across the country. The tournament lasts nine rounds, running from April to September. The 2016 tournament will be the 103rd edition of the Cup and will feature a record 92 teams. More teams are added from higher up the soccer pyramid as the tournament progresses, starting with adult club teams in the preliminary rounds. Local and regional amateur teams qualifying from USCS, USASA, and USSSA will enter in the first round. Teams qualifying from national amateur leagues, the NPSL and PDL, will join in the second round to play the winners of the first-round games. The winners move on to play teams from the third-tier USL, then NASL the following round, and finally MLS. Pairings are based on geographical location until the fifth round, where teams are then divided into groups of four from which matches will be drawn. Following this, the bracket is set for the remainder of the tournament. The champion receives a $250,000 prize and a berth in the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League. The runner-up is awarded $60,000 and the team that advances the farthest from each division, besides MLS, will receive $15,000. Sporting Kansas City of MLS is the reigning champion after defeating the Philadelphia Union in the final to claim its third title. The Chicago Fire and Seattle Sounders have the most titles of teams currently in operation, with four each. Bethlehem Steel and Maccabi Los Angeles each won five cups while they were active, the overall record for the competition.
