Dreams Behind the Lens Sakshi Singh sakshisinghjsr@gmail.com
Our happiness, our sorrows, our success, our failures, our destiny is our own. If we have the courage to dream then the responsibility to fulfill it lies on us. We are the makers of our own destiny. True to these words Vicky Roy, a celebrated professional photographer shaped his own life, turning it on its head. Born in an impoverished family in the village of Purila, West Bengal, Vicky was handed over to his maternal grandparents at an early age of two and a half as his parents did not have the means to feed him. Vicky had no resources whatsoever to reach the heights that he dwells in today.
Cover Photo Home Street Home © Vicky Roy
In 1998, at the age of eleven, Vicky fled from his home and reached Delhi. To get through the days Vicky worked as a rag picker at the railway station for almost a year and later worked at a road side restaurant or a ‘dhaba’. Vicky was rescued by the “Salam Baalak Trust” in 1999 and was enrolled in school. Vicky struggled with his studies and seeing that he lacks interest in academics his coordinator suggested Vicky to opt for a career which caters to his interests.

Dream Behind the Lens The ‘eureka’ moment for Vicky was when a British photographer asked him to assist him in a photo shoot. He studied photography at the Triveni Kala Sangam and later apprenticed under the portraitspecialist photographer, Any Mann. Hailing from the streets himself Vicky captures subjects with such sensitivity and understanding which is evident in his work. In 2007, he hosted his first solo exhibition titled, ‘Street Dreams’, at the Indian Habitat Centre, supported by British High Commission. In 2008, Ramchander Nath Foundation nominated Vicky for a mentorship program by the U.S. based Maybach foundation. Vicky was selected to photo document the reconstruction of the ‘World Trade Center’ in New York. Out of numerous applications from all over the world, Vicky was among the chosen four participants and the only one from South Asia. This was a six-month residency program. On his return and with the experience he had gained in his years abroad, he hosted his second solo show in Delhi.

7 He then also participated in the National Geography photography reality show and was on the show till the 9th episode. Vicky saw his life change on such an enormous level that he hardly had time to imbibe it all. His first monograph ‘Home Street Home’ was published by the Nazar Foundation and was released at the second edition of the Delhi Photo Festival in 2013. He was also awarded the ‘MITMedia Lab’ Fellowship in Boston to study photography in the year 2014. Vicky was listed in Forbes Asia’s- ’30 under 30 lists’ in the art category. Vicky Roy is an epitome of determination and what a man can achieve if only he dares to dream. From obscurity to a celebrated professional photographer Vicky’s journey is an inspiration for those who desire to break prejudice and live their life their way. Vicky feels one’s work defines oneself and what he is and what he can be. For young and aspiring photographers Vicky has only one message- ‘There is no shortcut to success.’ Vicky feels that resilience and perseverance are very important traits in any field. Vicky advices the young photographers if inclined towards photography or any such vocation for that matter one should learn it with patience and eagerness. Years should be invested to learn the nuances of the trait and above all, the faith in one’s dream should never be lost. http://mographito.com

Low light images on your iPhone Mike James mike@smartphonephotographytraining.com
I
am excited – low light photography has always been one of the biggest challenges for us photo enthusiasts. Technological advancements in the later models have now enabled us to attempt photos, previously not even contemplated. Great photography is not about the technology. It is about identifying a photo opportunity and learned visual literacy to creatively communicate the intent of the image. However, if you find yourself taking photos at night or just love this type of photography like I do – then the later iPhone models are worth the investment

Get the most out of the standard iPhone camera
Apple have made the iPhone so simple to use, that it hides some of it’s best features that provide some manual control. Third party camera replacement apps extend the iPhone capability even further! For now, let’s get the most out of your standard iPhone camera.

19 Our objective is to capture the subject within a sufficiently lit and detailed scene, without the grainy artefacts or blurry movement. These tips will get you started: •Stabilise the iPhone on a tripod or resting against a steady object •If practical reposition the subject to a location, offering improved lighting •Where practical, avoid capturing movement in a low light setting •Tap the screen to focus – the iPhone can struggle in low light due to lack of contrast in the scene in low light •At times it is best to avoid swiping up on the screen to increase brightness. This can introduce more grain and can make bright spots irrecoverable in editing •Take the photo without touching the screen – earphones, timer or Bluetooth remote •Turn off HDR on iPhone models in 7 PLUS or earlier. The later models have a faster processor to avoid motion blur between each blended capture

20 Live Photos Previously, when I present to large groups and go through the features of the iPhone and arrive at the point of explaining Live Photos – I would say it is gimmicky and a waste of time. Now, after the iOS 11 update – WOW, I cannot recommend it highly enough. Live Photos and apps available exclusively on iOS, prevent me from exclusively using an Android Samsung smartphone camera. It works amazingly well for static objects in a low light setting! Open the photo in the Photos app and swipe up on the photo to reveal the Effects options. Tap on Long Exposure and Done. This process removes the majority, if not all the grainy, and speckled artefacts referred to as ‘noise’ – typical of a low light image. You can also trim the start and end of a Live Photo and Long Exposure. Tap Edit to reveal the video film strip. Drag either end to trim the start and finish times of your long exposure. This is handy to remove (trim out) a person who appears at either the start or end of the Long Exposure. Tap Done to save.
We are living in an exciting era of computational photography. The Long Exposure Effect, blends and averages the series of images captured in Live Photos together to produce one image. Grain is randomly positioned in each image and unlike a constant subject in the image – is averaged and almost completely removed! The iPhone then passes the image through their noise reduction algorithm to produce an amazingly improved image.

21 Camera replacement apps Using a manual camera replacement app like Procamera or ProCam 5, quite often yields the same result as your standard iPhone camera in low light! This is because, each manual setting has a maximum and once you hit the highest ISO or the slowest shutter speed – there is no turbo button to increase the settings. These two apps, however provide some extra features that start to introduce us to ‘computational photography’.
ProCam 5 ProCam is one of the camera replacement apps that provide the most manual control and computational photography techniques available in an iOS app. The iPad Pro standard camera can capture images at the maximum shutter value of 1/17 and a high ISO of 2000. The Night Mode in ProCam 5, allows you to choose a slower shutter of 1/8, 1/4 or 1 second depending on the iPhone/iPad model. If you are using a tripod – there is a better option in the app called Slow Shutter. Tap on Slow Shutter to reveal capture options: Low Light, Light Trail and Motion Blur. This feature automatically captures a series of images (similar to Live Photos) and blends them together. Depending on capture option selected, the algorithm will produce a different result. Each option will capture images at a minimum ISO resulting in less noise and blend the images together, further reducing more noise!

22 •Motion Blur produces results similar to the Long Exposure effect, now available in Live Photos. It blends and averages the series of images, to produce a single image. This is my favourite option for low light photos, using this app! •Low Light mode will do the same as Motion Blur and gradually brighten the image the longer you leave it capturing the scene in Bulb mode. In this mode, tap the shutter button to start the capture and again to stop. •Light Trail mode blends the image similar to motion blur. However, any pixels that are brighter than the average tone in the scene will remain and not be averaged and removed. This produces those stunning light trails of vehicle lights passing through a scene.

ProCamera This app has a Low Light mode and fantastic in-app purchase available that is worth the cost of less than a cup of coffee named Low Light +. Once you select the camera mode, tap the hamburger icon to enter Settings. In Low Light mode, there are more options available than Low Light + including shutter speed and ISO control and priority modes. This is because Low Light + intelligently assess the scene and will capture the required number of images to create
/mographito /mographito
mographito@gmail.com
http://mographito.com
23 Now, the best tipAnother in-app purchase in Pro Camera is HDR (High Dynamic Range). When you tap on the settings icon, tap through the presets to LowLight HDR. This app captures a series of images based on the principles of HDR – it captures an image to capture all the details in the brightest part of the scene, another for the darkest part of the scene and at least one more inbetween referred to as the mid tones. If the scene is quite dark, a tripod icon will appear warning you that one is required. This is going to test if you are not too over-whelmed so far by this article! The darkest image in this HDR capture will itself, be a series of images blended together. It is then blended with the brightest image and mid tone image. The app then applies a noise reduction algorithm before producing one image! How is that for computational photography. The results of a night time cityscape can be quite extraordinary compared to the auto photo straight out of the iPhone camera.

24 RECAP Hopefully that article was not a TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read). If you skipped through to this part – here is the summary: •Choose somewhere that offers the most light •Stabilise the iPhone and avoid subject movement if practical •Avoid the 2X on the 7 Plus and 8 Plus models •Tap the screen to focus and avoid swiping up to brighten the image too much •Trial turning off HDR on earlier model iPhone if you notice movement blur •Use the Long Exposure effect in Live Photos to take incredible low light images •Camera app ProCam has a Night and Long Exposure mode •Camera app ProCamera has a Night and Low Light HDR mode

Professional Photos with your Cell Phone. Alex Almeida Fotรณgrafo alexalmeidaphoto@gmail.com
Only
a DSLR camera makes quality photos, or is it possible to make quality photo with your mobile phone? This is a recurring question for many people. It is a fact that a DSLR camera will make quality photos and are essential for some types of work, for example: photographs for marriage, advertising and large events. For this type of equipment, it will require a high investment power. But I have great news. Your cell phone, which is in your pocket or in your hand, can make high quality photos and are suitable for many situations, for example: on your holiday trip and street photography. Knowing how to use your phone, you can generate photos similar to DSLR cameras. Another attraction that your cell phone offers you is the edition of the photos on the device itself, and with internet access, you can share incredible photos in minutes. Mobile photography has become so important that many photographers around the world are winning awards with this modality. So, if you like to take photos, knowing how to use the functions of your cell phone and the basics about photography, your electronic companion will be enough to record great moments.

30 1ยบ Tip - Check the phone memory Before leaving to take photos, make sure you have enough memory available on your phone. If your memory is full, you will not be able to take photos. Make a backup of your photos in clouds, such as iCloud, Dropbox and Google Drive.
2ยบ Tip - Know the camera settings Be curious and explore the settings a lot. Find out how you can get the most out of your camera. Check the best way to use the focus and whether the camera's resolution is at maximum. 3ยบ Tip - Clean the lens Keep your camera lens clean at all times. When using the phone daily, it is common for the camera lens to become dirty. Therefore, keep the lens clean at the time of taking the photos, thus, you will have sharper and more quality photos. Also avoid any accessories that could obstruct the camera lens.

31 4ยบ Tip - Use the camera behind Try to use the rear camera more, as it has more megapixels than the front camera. Photos taken with the rear camera will bring much more quality to your photos. But if you are going to make a self, use the front camera without fear. 5ยบ Tip - Strong Arms Not shaking your arms is very important for the quality of the photos. Always look for a comfortable and stable position to hold the phone. 6ยบ Tip - Light Always give preference to natural light and use the cell phone flash only if the light in the room is not enough. If you want more detailed photos, avoid light being behind the object being photographed, because when the light is behind you will see only the silhouette of the object. But if the expected result is just the silhouette, keep the light behind the object. 7ยบ Tip - Do not use Zoom Never use the digital zoom of your phone because it only increases the size of the photographed objects and cut the edges, thus limiting your options for editing the photos. Make your photos without zooming in, and if you need to make any cut, do this in editing. 8ยบ Tip - Edit and use filters After you take the photo, and you want to edit it to leave it an image show. The hint is, use and abuse the editing apps, many cell phones already come with a native editor, or you can download an editor from app stores. After these valuable tips, now just practice. I am sure that soon you will be making wonderful and unforgettable photos during your tours and trips. And do not forget to share your photos here with Mo Graphito on our Facebook page.

Creativity was something I always struggled with. Surprisingly, we are all capable of creating WOW photos. Some of us simply need to learn basic photography theories to tap into that elusive talent and then practice. That is what is so awesome about the technology in our phone cameras - we can ignore the technical stuff and just get out there and have fun experimenting.
Learning how to see photographic opportunities and the techniques behind why some photos just work - allowed me to be more photography literate. I now see beauty in the ordinary and confidently capture and visually communicate the story behind special moments and experiences. This has now become a real passion.

35 We have a thriving supportive, encouraging and engaged community of likeminded photo enthusiasts in our Facebook group and on Instagram – both searchable under @smartphonephotographytraining Each week, in the spirit of photography education, I post a new theme to capture new subjects, learn new techniques and share out ideas. At the end of the week, I create a collage of your images shared – which always looks stunning and is a highlight of my week. In the post, I share the #PeoplesChoice winners – which are the most liked and commented photos and articulate my thoughts on why these particular images have been so engaging and captured our attention.
Many in the group have either attended a workshop, joined me email list or participated in my free course at https://smartphonephotographytraining.com/freecourse. In this five video series, I cover: smartphone camera specific tips and techniques, how to create a WWO photo, how to become more creative, how to set up and structure and image, lighting, black and white photography and basic video techniques. That is me, nice to meet you and please feel free to join our community and reach out to myself anytime at Mike@smartphonephotographytraining.com http://mographito.com
