Telemedicine transforming the world of healthcare

Introduction The World Health Organization describes telemedicine as, delivery of health care services , especially when the distance becomes a critical factor. The healthcare professionals make use of the information and communication technologies in order to exchange prescription for diagnosis, treatment and the prevention of diseases or injury. It is also used for the purpose of further research and evaluation in the field of medicine.

Challenges Ahead 1. Lack of uniformity 2. Critic’s perspective 3. Acceptance to change 4. Patients don’t trade quality for convenience 5. Government support

Lack of uniformity With the rapid growth and acceptance of telemedicine technology, still lot of questions and challenges revolve around its stability. The regulations for carrying out telemedicine practices still vary from state-tostate. Different guidelines have been put up by different countries as well as physicians. The question of uniformity still remains one of the biggest factors concerning Telemedicine.

Critic’s perspective Some critics still question the efficiency and quality of services that are being provided through virtual consultation practices. The authenticity and reliability of online programs raise many eyebrows. Â

Acceptance to change Biased preference towards the conventional method of consultations still remains a big taboo in the mind of a majority of the population. They still prefer having a face-to-face doctorpatient consultation.Â

Patients don’t trade quality for convenience With the fastest growing Telemedicine service, it connects consumers with various medical experts on phone, video calls or e-mails. Generally, such consultations are for nonemergency issues such as colds, rashes or allergies. But a majority still relies on face-toface consultations while sitting in the doctor’s room. This mindset is still a challenge which will take normal course of time for its acceptance.

Government support When it comes to taking the matters in hand by the government, there are certain limitations to handle private sectors. But since the telemedicine technology is still at its primary stage, it requires more acceptance and support on behalf of the government. Only government has the funds and the power to help it survive and grow.

Changing scenario The time is not far when telemedicine practices would be considered just another way to consult a health professional. Like remote monitoring has immense potential to gather clinical data from multiple patients simultaneously. Such practices need to be supported and promoted in order to revolutionize the field of medicine. Helping patients who have limited access to decent medical facilities can bring a change in the health statistics and promote healthy living.
