May Surprise! Launching a Real Producers platform in a new market is a difficult task. First, you must gather the content for the magazine by meeting with and interviewing multiple top agents and managing brokers. Next, you must secure enough advertising partners to at least break even before going to print. We live in a very conservative community and many businesses are leery of anything new. I heard many comments like, “We think this is a great and genius idea, but we want to wait until you go to print.” In other words, they were saying, “We want to see if you make it to print.” Well, I did go to print in April 2020! And I must say that I was immensely proud and excited to reach that important milestone. May surprise! The pandemic hit and most businesses have put a hold on spending marketing dollars until they see what happens with Covid-19. Fortunately, for you, the lockdown has not affected real estate to a great degree. As I speak to various top agents in the market, I repeatedly hear that they are still remarkably busy. Hope you are, too. Mobile Bay Real Producers magazine has been mailed to the top 300 agents in this market each month beginning with April. Unless a top agent gave me their home mailing address when I met with them, the publication is being mailed to the brokerage office where they work. This has been a hiccup because many of you never went to your office during the month of May and much of June. I have spoken to a few people who did not see the
8 • August 2020
magazine until mid-June. If you prefer to have the publication mailed to your home, please email your address to Robert.orso@realproducersmag. com or text me at (251) 209-3868.
By now, there should be a lot more buzz about Mobile Bay Real Producers, but no doubt, the lockdown has affected the reach. The feedback I have received thus far is positive and I am extremely proud of the content we have produced for those featured in the four issues so far. If you, as a top agent or broker, have any feedback, I would love to hear from you. Nominations of those you know to have a great story are welcomed as well. Who do I focus on as potential advertising partners? It is simple. The main candidates are referred to me by you, the top agents. These are the businesses that you regularly refer your clients to. Lenders, Title Companies, Home Inspectors, Remodelers, Service Providers, you get the idea. If you would like to send me your most trusted vendors, I will meet with them to figure out if Real Producers is a good fit for them and if they are a good fit for Real Producers. This will help me grow the magazine and enable me to include more interesting articles about your peers and real estate in general. Please visit my Mobile Bay Real Producers Facebook page. We will be posting updates and digital copies of the publications.

CHRIS KING
top producer By Jill Clair Gentry Photos by Cornerstone Photography
OF ROBERTS BROTHERS Mobile’s real estate King says the key to success is working with everyone
Chris began his career in real estate at just 22 years old.
Chris King is real estate royalty.
Chris focused on young buyers at the beginning, and many of those clients have hired him again and again as their lives have progressed.
He’s been the Top Producer at Roberts Brothers since 1995 with sales last year of over $22,000,000 in closed transactions. Chris says the key to his successful 34-year career is that he loves what he does and loves people. He truly enjoys getting to know every person he interacts with—buyers, sellers and other agents. “I work with everyone—whether it’s the first-time homebuyer or customers buying second vacation homes on the Bay,” Chris says. “I work with all price ranges and all people. The diversity is what has made this job fun and interesting for 34 years.” Chris has developed a niche for finding buyers the perfect home, and he usually has five to 10 buyers on his client list. “Many agents become listing agents after being in the business for a long time, but I still enjoy getting out there and searching for the right house for my clients,” Chris says. “I think it’s fun to load clients in my car, get to know them and find that perfect house. It’s especially rewarding to work with first-time homebuyers. Purchasing that first home is truly a memorable experience, and fortunately, in Mobile, we have such a good, affordable market for them.” His only rule when working with young buyers: if you’re old enough to buy a home, you can’t call him Mr. King—just Chris.

“It was my first real adult job, which was rare in those days,” he says. “I was the youngest REALTOR® in Mobile then, and for several years after that. It took me two years to get my first listing.”
“A lot of those early clients are customers for life,” Chris says. “I’ve seen clients through births, divorces and tragedies. I sold many clients their first home, then helped them expand into larger, more expensive homes and then downsize to smaller ones to fit their needs depending on their stage of life. At this point in my career, I’m now selling to grown children of my early clients.” Most agents make at least one brokerage move throughout their career, but Chris has worked for Roberts Brothers continuously since 1986. “I drank that yellow Kool-Aid from Day 1, and I’ve never switched,” Chris says. “Roberts Brothers has been so good to me. I’m on my third generation of management, and they’ve all been great.” Much has changed in the industry since Chris began his career. He’s seen technology come into play and has watched markets rise and fall. Regardless of all the changes, Chris maintains that successful agents stick to the basics: hard work and maintaining good relationships. “It’s imperative to not to look at a client like a onetime transaction,” he says. “No matter how much or little money you make, if you get that customer on your side, they’re your billboard.”
Mobile Bay Real Producers • 11
All agents understand the importance of relationships, but Chris is a people-person at his core and genuinely sees every client as a friend whom he enjoys spending time with and helping. “As much as I love finding the right house for a buyer or selling someone’s home, I regret not seeing my clients as much after closing,” Chris says. “I have a vested interest in them. They really do become my friends.”

man from Fairhope who became a great friend and mentor.
When you are grateful for it, the results you achieve for those around you reach even higher.
“David is like a father figure for me. We talked a lot about real estate because he worked in development. So I heard a lot about his experiences there,” Kyle remembers. “As a result of our conversations, I got really interested in real estate.”
Someone who knows all about that is Kyle Malmay, a REALTOR® with Roberts Brothers Real Estate. When you talk with him, you instantly feel the genuine passion and thankfulness he has for his life and career as he follows through on his commitments with gratitude. “My guiding principle is doing what I said I was going to do,” Kyle explains. “I want to do more than what I’ve promised. Never less.” A Career Comes Into Focus That kind of approach to work and life has served Kyle well throughout his time on the planet. Born and raised in Zwolle, Louisiana, Kyle moved to New Orleans when he was in his early 20s to pursue his passion for film. “I had a great time following my interest in the film industry,” he recalls. “I worked on a wide range of productions on the crew side, doing everything from lighting, and script continuity to work as a production assistant. I moved to New Orleans at that time because it was a really good environment for film with the tax credits that the state had at the time. I had a lot of great experiences on set.”

Rewarding Path Through Life During that same time, Kyle met the man who would become his husband, Austin Poole. Their relationship grew closer, they married and then moved to Mobile, where Austin had grown up. Kyle’s interest in real estate continued to be strong. David had introduced Kyle to Johnny Roberts, of Roberts Brothers Real Estate. “Johnny is a truly great guy. I met with him, and decided to get my license,” Kyle says. “To begin with, it was a very slow burn. The business is all about connections and people you know. Unfortunately, I didn’t know anyone here except for my husband’s family.” The transition was tough. But Kyle’s commitment was tougher. “I did a lot of leg work in those early days, holding open houses for other agents and anything else I could,” he says. “I kept at it, and soon the seeds I had planted started sprouting…and then it went to a very rapid pace…and there’s been no slowing down.” Putting the Pieces Together One of the greatest sources of pride Kyle has in his work comes from his natural abilities as a problem-solver. sales volume numbers have grown by at least $1 million over his previous year’s total. He started strong in his career, as well…earning Rookie of the Year honors during his first 12 months in the business. In 2019, Kyle finished the year ranked among the top 30 agents in the company. Away from work, Kyle and Austin enjoy a wide range of pursuits. One is visiting Dauphin Island and spending time on the beach and in the waves with their 90-pound German Shepard. Every day, Kyle approaches his work with a deep sense of thanks. And that starts well before the workday.
“I start every day with gratitude. I’m always trying to keep that mindset of being grateful,” Kyle emphasizes. “That guides the rest of my day. I’m a very grateful guy. I recognize that I’ve been blessed and that I’m surrounded by a great group of people at my company and my office.” At the end of the day, Kyle continues to grow by following the basics in life.

Kyle does. And his clients feel a deep sense of gratitude, as well.
“There are a lot of problems to solve in real estate. In fact, I’d say there are more things that can go wrong than go right. There’s always something,” he points out. “But, even though it can be quite stressful in the moment, I enjoy the critical thinking skills that are required.” The relationships that have come have also been rewarding. “I enjoy the relationships that I’ve built. When I moved here, I knew one person. Now, as I look back over the last three years, I’ve met many people, and I’ve found that I’m receiving referrals,” Kyle says. “That is an amazing feeling being at the point where the people who I’ve worked with over the past couple of years are giving my name to others. That means a lot.” Commitment and Impact Kyle’s results demonstrate his commitment, growing year by year. In fact, each year, his 16 • August 2020

nization. Last year, the company donated a total of $16,000 to CMN. The makings of a great broker Prior to her career in real estate, which began in 1996, Cathy worked in the mortgage business. “I realized I wanted to move into the sales side of real estate after an experience I had with this little old lady who I had to decline,” Cathy says. “I worked and worked on it for six months and finally got her approved, and she cried. She wanted this little condo so badly. After that, I decided it would be more rewarding to show people the homes of their dreams rather than tell them they can’t have it.” That experience in the mortgage industry has been invaluable to Cathy as an agent and a broker.
Cathy Matter, managing broker of RE/ MAX Partners in West Mobile, believes a successful brokerage requires happy agents. She works enthusiastically to keep her 36-member team energized, and it seems to be working. Last year, RE/MAX Partners closed over 648 transactions worth $106 million. Investing in agents “A great deal of the time, my agents are out in the field working hard for their clients,” Cathy says. “My job as the broker is to keep them up-to-date on technology, marketing strategies and creative ideas. And I try to always make sure our agents are having fun.” Cathy plans elaborate office parties, and sales meetings always feature excellent food and prizes.

time,” she says. “We try to do things as a family instead of just coworkers. We have barbecues, crawfish boils and spend weekends together in Orange Beach. We’re a very close team.” Mike and Debbie Gautreaux have been agents with RE/MAX Partners for 25 years and have always had great experiences with their brokers, but they say Cathy takes her role to the next level. “Cathy is very responsive to any requests for assistance of any kind at any time,” Mike says. “She is constantly working on numerous events to bring camaraderie and boost morale in our office. In addition, she is extremely experienced in all aspects of real estate. She goes above and beyond anything we could expect from a broker.” Cathy also believes working together for the greater good bonds a team. Each year, RE/MAX Partners hosts a charity golf tournament benefitting Children’s Miracle Network, and every agent donates a portion of each transaction to the orga-
“As an agent, you really have to know how financing works,” Cathy says. “You have to present the offer so everyone knows exactly what they’re getting into.” Cathy encourages her agents to develop strong relationships with mortgage lenders and to communicate with them throughout the process so there are no surprises and no delays. In 2013, Cathy began working as the managing broker of Property Management for RE/MAX Partners, managing its residential and commercial rental properties as well as 13 homeowner associations. In 2018, she became managing broker of RE/MAX Partners’ Real Estate Sales Division while also maintaining her role on the Property Management side. Mobile Bay Real Producers • 19
“We never have a slow day here,” Cathy says. “I work morning until night, sometimes into the evening. I love the fast pace, and I love helping people.” Working at RE/MAX Partners of Mobile Cathy loves the advantages she can offer agents through her brokerage. “First of all, the brand recognition of RE/MAX is a huge asset to our agents,” Cathy says. “RE/MAX is very well known to people moving here from other areas of the country. We also have an amazing referral network and lead generation technology.” Agents also benefit from the experience of the team as a whole.
Each agent shares the mindset that long-term relationships and integrity trump quick sales, so the team is devoted to customer service and holistic solutions. Newer agents enjoy mentorship from experienced agents, and everyone is willing to share ideas and solutions. “We tend to attract more experienced agents, although I have been getting a lot of inquiries from newer agents,” Cathy says. “Our agents have such a wealth of knowledge and have been doing this so long that there’s always an agent around to lend a helping hand, collaborate or counsel. With everyone working together, we can usually get things solved with everyone happy at the end of the day.”

THE
Myrick AGENCY By Dave Danielson Photos By Sam Whitt Photography
Independent Impact Many hands can make a task much easier to complete — especially when those hands are pulling together in the same direction. That’s the feeling you get when you sit down with the professionals at The Myrick Agency to discuss protecting the most important things in your life. When you work with the Myrick Agency in Foley, you instantly realize you’re in the hands of caring, seasoned professionals with agents Miranda Bennett, Ed Bennett and Andrew Hesse. Needs Meet Solutions The Myrick Agency handles a full spectrum of insurance needs to cover your home, condo, townhouse, investment properties and more. The Myrick Agency also helps its clients with other insurance needs, including providing flood coverage. All of that expertise is directed toward meeting your clients’ needs. “One of the benefits we provide to our clients is the fact that we are brokers. We look at their needs, and then we shop it around. We don’t have to turn anyone away, whether they have horses, or they live in a flood zone, or have other special needs,” Miranda says. “No matter what, we have something for everybody.” Ed takes pride in the effort — and the results. “It really comes down to the fact that what we’re doing is we’re helping our clients get the best policy they can get, and getting it for the best value,” Ed says. 22 • August 2020
The team at the Myrick Agency takes its role seriously — including when it comes to supporting the real estate deals that can hang in the balance. “We really enjoy what we do when it comes to the real estate side of our business, working with both the agents and future insureds,” Andrew says. “I like to get in there and do everything I can to make this part of the transaction smooth and easy. It’s nice to be part of something like that. When people buy a house, it’s the biggest transaction of their lives. Being part of that is really fun.” An Open Door That process begins with communication. “We specialize in making our real estate partners’ job easier. They can get in touch with us at any time. We understand there are going to be times when they have a buyer on edge, and insurance is pivotal. That’s why we offer a very quick turnaround time. We typically get a quote back that same day,” Miranda emphasizes. “Another thing that separates us is we give our personal numbers so that if our partners or clients need us, they can get us. That’s huge.” True teamwork lives here, with a comfortable family atmosphere. As Ed says, “We’re all here to help the customer, no matter whose customer that is. The servant spirit is key. We’re all here to help meet the need.” Andrew agrees, saying, “At the end of the day, it’s the customer that matters the most. If someone needs something when one of @realproducers
us is away, that’s what we do. We feel good that, when we leave, that we take care of everyone who needs to be taken care of.” “I really like working here. There’s no one else that I would rather do this business with than these guys. We have an amazing thing here that I don’t take for granted,” Miranda smiles. “I’m very grateful.” Family Foundations That family feeling is at the center of the team’s world away from work, as well. Miranda and Ed are married, forming a solid partnership in life and in business. They have five children, and their free time is filled with their kids’ events and family gatherings. They also have a passion for hunting, boating and fishing. Giving back is central, too, with their support going to groups such as the Women’s Care Medical Center. Andrew and his wife have twin girls who just graduated from high school. They’re preparing to leave for college this fall. In their free time, Andrew and his daughters enjoy traveling together. As part of that, they’re also a big football family, following their favorite team on the road for away games. Supporting the community is a big part of life, with the Hesse family supporting pet rescue and transportation efforts.
For the clients who get the protection they need at a value that makes a real budgetary difference, the work of the Myrick Agency team is remarkable. As Miranda says, it starts with the basics. “I think we look at it as treating others the way you want to be treated. So we do what we can to go the extra mile to help the people we work with,” she says. “Whenever a customer is buying a home, it can be a stressful time. I don’t want what we do to add to that,” Ed says. “We want to make it as easy as possible, and for them to know we have their best interests at heart.” As Andrew says, “We always work to return calls as quickly as possible and then follow through until the need is met. For us, it’s not just about quoting people a price. We make sure we’re here for them to help them with whatever they need.” For More Information About the Myrick Agency: Website: www.myrickagencyfoley.com Phone: 251-923-4873 Email: FoleyOffice@TheMyrickAgency.com

FAQ
ABOUT THIS MAGAZINE
We realize that Real Producers is a new concept here in the Mobile/Baldwin area, and some of you may be wondering what it’s all about. That is why we have created an “FAQs About This Magazine” page. Here we will answer the most commonly asked questions around the country regarding our program. My door is always open to discuss anything regarding this community – this publication is 100 percent designed to be your voice! Q: Who receives this magazine? A: The top 300 agents in the Mobile and Baldwin
County markets. We pulled the MLS numbers (by volume) from January 1, 2018-December 31, 2018. We cut the list off at number 300, and the distribution was born. For this year’s list, the minimum production level for our group is on pace for $4.5 million in 2019. The list will reset at the end of 2020 for next year, and continue to update annually. Q: What is the process for being featured in this magazine? A: It’s really simple – every feature you see has
first been nominated. You can nominate other REALTORS®, affiliates, brokers, owners, or even yourself! Office leaders can also nominate REALTORS®. We will consider anyone brought to our attention because we don’t know everyone’s story, so we need your help to learn about them. A nomination currently looks like this: You email us at robert.orso@realproducersmag.com with the subject line, “Nomination: (Name of Nominee),” and explain why you are nominating them to be featured. It could be they have an amazing story that needs to be told – perhaps they overcame extreme obstacles, they are an exceptional leader, have the best customer service, or they give back to the community in a big way. The next step is an interview with us to ensure it’s a good fit. If it all works out, then we put the wheels in motion for our writer to conduct an interview and for our photographers to schedule a photoshoot.
realproducersmag.com
Q: What does it cost a REALTOR®/team to be featured? A: Zero, zilch, zippo, nada, nil. It costs
nothing, my friends, so nominate away! We are not a pay-to-play model. We share real stories of real producers. Q: Who are the preferred partners? A: Anyone listed as a “preferred partner” in the
front of the magazine is a part of this community. They will have an ad in every issue of the magazine, attend our quarterly events, and be a part of our online community. We don’t just find these businesses off the street, nor do we work with all businesses that approach us. One or many of you have recommended every single preferred partner you see in this publication. We won’t even meet with a business that has not been vetted by one of you and “stamped for approval,” in a sense. Our goal is to create a powerhouse network, not only for the best REALTORS® in the area but the best affiliates, as well, so we can grow stronger together. Q: How can I recommend a preferred partner? A: If you have a recommendation for a local
