Crank the Hank: How to Spin Country Music at a Wedding Reception By Staci Nichols
Y
ou didn't know I'm 1/2 German and 1/4 Redneck? Yep. I grew up on a ranch 5 miles from the nearest store. I once slept on the sidewalk for Garth Brooks tickets, I shot my first gun in 5th grade, and I'm not ashamed to say I love honky tonkin' (i.e. line dancing & riding the mechanical bull in a country bar, usually over cheap beer or whiskey).
their toes, but they won't be out on the dance floor (based on my expertise and experience). Occasionally, the bride will tell me that 3 or 4 of her besties and herself know a few line dances from hanging out at the local country bar. Ask her for the names of the dances and what songs they want to dance each line dance to (some line dances can be done to multiple songs; others can not be). In this case, I will typically play these two or three line dances they know 5-15 minutes into open dancing as a way to warm up the rest of the crowd (the crew of besties will dance to "their" line dances sober and on a cold floor simply because "Hey, I know this one!") I usually will do their line dances back to back and knock them out right away. The only other country music I'll play during open dancing is this block: "Sweet Home Alabama," Lynyrd Skynyrd (99 BPM) into "Save a Horse," Big & Rich (102 BPM) into "Country Girl (Shake It For Me)," Luke Bryan (106 BPM). On certain occasions, I might throw in an club remix of anything by Carrie Underwood or Miranda Lambert or Lady Antebellum's "Need You Now" (if the clients can tolerate club music).
COUNTRY MUSIC IS FOR DRINKIN'
No shock that one of my specialties is country music/country line dancing (google "Country DJ" and you'll find me on page one)...so here is how I navigate the situation when a client tells you they want some country music for dancing at their reception. First, take a deep breath, smile, and relax. As DJs, we know 9 times out of 10 this is going to be like dumping a bucket of ice water on the dance floor we've worked so hard to fire up. Not to worry!
ASK IF THE GUESTS KNOW HOW TO COUNTRY DANCE 95% of the time, they do not. Ask specifically, "Do you guys know the Slappin' Leather, Tush Push, or Power Jam?" If they look at you confused, follow up with, "Two Step? Ten Step?" Still no (or mostly no)? Then I will tell the client that, yes, of course, I can play country music during dancing, BUT, in my experience, your guests won't dance to it (yes, even if it's their favorite country song). Your guests might be singing along, they might be tapping DJ Staci Nichols is based in San Diego and specializes in spinning “country fusion,” Latin/Spanish, and mainstream music. R&B is for making babies. EDM is for fist pumping. Country is for drinkin.' When do people drink? Cocktail Hour (and Dinner). And, of course, country slow songs can be squeezed in pretty easily during open dancing. But what if the couple really needs to hear more country music than just that? The last thing you want to do is try to mix blocks of country in with "real" dance music! No worries. This is my secret weapon! I ask the client if they would like to have some "traditional" wedding dance music for a portion of the time after dinner then, at some point, transition to what equates to sort of a second Cocktail Hour--what I call "Country Drinkin' Music." So, for example, the bride might want one hour of regular dancing and one hour of country. I will play the regular "go to" dance stuff then start winding it down and transitioning from that to country with some classic rock—"You Shook Me All Night Long," ACDC (126 BPM) into "Livin' on a Prayer," Bon Jovi (123 BPM) into
MO BI LE BE AT.COM ▷ A P R IL 2018
"Don't Stop Believin," Journey (119 BPM). You can even throw in "Sweet Caroline," Neil Diamond (126 BPM) or "Jessie's Girl," Rick Springfield (131 BPM). When I start the last non-country song, I will announce to please join us on the dance floor for the last dance and let everyone know I'll be playing "Country Drinkin' Music" until 10:00 PM so don't go anywhere. As much as I hate talking during dancing, this announcement is crucial.
WHAT COUNTRY SONGS TO PLAY If you even mention "Achy Breaky Heart" or "Boot Scootin' Boogie," the client is going to put on a plastic smile and slowly back out of the door, running for their lifted 4x4. These songs are dead give-aways that you don't know anything about country music or country dancing. After using the transition songs listed above, here is a good idea of the type of music I would play for a classic block of "Country Drinkin' Music" (followed by a list of poppy "country" songs for those couples who've never heard of Chris LeDeux): • "Good Hearted Woman" or "I'm a Ramblin' Man," Waylon Jennings • "Fishin' in the Dark," Nitty Gritty Dirt Band • "Thank God I'm a Country Boy," John Denver (Direct Music Service has a great beatmatchable remix available) • "All My X's Live in Texas," George Strait • "A Boy Named Sue," Johnny Cash • "If You're Going to Play in Texas," "Tennessee River & a Mountain Man," and/or "Dixieland Delight," Alabama • "Fancy," Reba McEntire (just a smidge different than the Iggy Azalea song) • "Boondocks," Little Big Town • "What Was I Thinkin," Dierks Bentley • "Girls Night Out," "Have Mercy," and/or "Rockin with the Rhythm," the Judds • "Hooked on an 8 Second Ride," Chris LeDeux • "Play Somethin' Country," Brooks N Dunn (you can Electric Slide to this one) • "Saturday Night Special," Conway Twitty • "Country Boy Can Survive" and "Family Tradition,"* Hank Williams Jr • "Devil Went Down to Georgia," Charlie Daniels Band • "Chattahoochee," Alan Jackson • "Nobody to Blame," Chris Stapleton • "Rodeo" or "Thunder Rolls," Garth Brooks • "Tulsa Time," Don Williams • "Ticks," Brad Paisley • "Kiss my Country Ass," Rhett Akins (play the Blake Shelton version for the country pop crowd below) • "I Love a Rainy Night" and "Drivin my Life Away," Eddie Rabbitt • "Chicken Fried," Zac Brown Band • "Guitars & Cadillacs," Dwight Yoakum • "Courtesy of the Red, White, & Blue," Toby Keith (if there is active military present, be sure to make an announcement thanking them for their service and ask them to come to the dance floor as the song is starting)
New poppy "country" for the city slickers (remember to play "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift during dancing as most pop country fans are Swifties): • "Body Like a Back Road," Sam Hunt • "This is How We Roll" and "Cruise," Florida Georgia Line • "Dirt Road Anthem," Jason Aldean • "It Goes Like This," Thomas Rhett • "Song about a Girl," Eric Paslay • "Parking Lot Party" and "Four on the Floor," Lee Brice • "Humble & Kind," Tim McGraw • "Drink to That All Night," Jerrod Niemann • "Little Red Wagon," Miranda Lambert (clean version) • "Head Over Boots," Jon Pardi • "Huntin,' Fishin,' & Lovin' Every Day," Luke Bryan • "Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not," Thompson Square • "Hey Pretty Girl" and "Somethin' 'Bout a Truck," Kip Moore • "Bait a Hook," Justin Moore • "Crank It Up," Colt Ford • "Bottoms Up" and "Country Must Be Country-Wide," Brantley Gilbert • "Boys 'Round Here," Blake Shelton • "Don't Ya," Brett Eldredge • "Small Town Throwdown," Brantley Gilbert/Thomas Rhett/Justin Moore • "Redneck Crazy," Tyler Farr • "Somethin' Bad," Carrie Underwood & Miranda Lambert • "C.O.U.N.T.R.Y." LoCash Cowboys • "Smoke a Little Smoke," Eric Church Then be sure to end with Toby Keith's "Red Solo Cup" into Garth Brooks' "Friends in Low Places" if grandma is still around. If you're dealing with a bunch of shirtless groomsmen by this point, be sure to throw on "Take My Drunk Ass Home" by Luke Bryan afterwards. Now if the client says, on the other hand, "Yes, we go line dancing every week. We met at a honky tonk, and most of our friends are fellow line dancers," then you tell the bride to call me because she'll need a DJ who knows which songs go with which dances and the counts to start each dance. The other 95% of the time, you have everything you need to do a 5-star job right here in this article. Yee-haw!

*During “Family Tradition,” it is customary for the DJ to do some crowd prompts during the chorus. The chorus says: "Hank, why do you drink?" DJ shouts: "TO GET DRUNK!" "Why do you roll smoke?" DJ shouts: "TO GET HIGH!" "Why must you live out the songs that you wrote?" DJ shouts: "TO GET LAID!" Trust me: The crowd will be shouting it out with you—this "family tradition" is almost 40 years old.

MOBILE MATTERS
With or Against the Stream? STREAMING MUSIC: WHAT CLIENTS, GUESTS, VENUES AND VENDORS REALLY THINK By Matt Martindale
T
he most recent "State of the DJ Industry"* survey had a statistic that was shocking: 24 percent of the music DJs play at events, such as weddings, is streamed. This includes songs accessed from public sites, (ie. Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, etc). Digging a little deeper, 5 percent of respondents say they stream 100 percent of their music at events with none on a hard
• Firmware update issues • Audio compression algorithims resulting in poor song quality, including song distortion, songs that crack, skip, and fast forward/slow down really fast, during playback • Wrong versions played because they are mis-labeled and not previewed (songs then played with inappropriate content, bad language, etc) Spotify has 159 million active users worldwide, 71 million pay a monthly subscription fee; which is about double Apple Music.
SAVING MONEY...BUT PAYING A PRICE
drive. Of those, 86 percent are single operators, with 73 percent of those single operators reporting less than $50K in total company revenue; almost all reported a decline in revenues in 2017. Could there be a correlation? Think about that... out of roughly 80 songs played in a 5 hour wedding, an average of 19 songs (admittedly, as a profession) are streamed. That leaves the DJ to take a chance on things like: • Reliability with wifi or cell phone connectivity • Frequent interruptions (buffering issues)
Streaming music doesn't just involve money. It involves time, inconvenience and other people's perception of one's own integrity (personally, and as an industry) and the quality of experience. Consumers will go for the least total cost to them personally, but do not fully assess the risks associated with the total success of their event by hiring DJs who stream music. Streaming music also devalues music from an artistic standpoint; both with the creation and consumption standpoint. Music is everywhere, on demand, and is often free. If it’s “free,” then it appears to have no value. This expectation gap is tainted by a flurry of “professional DJs” she (a prospective bride) has seen at other weddings (or on YouTube) when their music buffers, or skips at the wrong time. This experience then lowers her expectations and perception of what a quality DJ should do; and ultimately the price she is willing to pay for a DJ. (I won't get into the legality, or games music producers or labels are playing with artist compensation in this article, but rather, I am focusing on how streaming music at events is perceived by the client, guests, venues and other vendors.) To paraphrase what a colleague told me recently: "If music is difficult to obtain, then streaming rewards those DJs who are lazy or just don't care. They choose convenience over doing what's right or actually taking the time to prepare properly." True.
PERCEPTION PROBLEMS Matt Martindale has been a professional DJ and MC since 1989, performing at more than 1,600 wedding receptions since then. Along with running his award-winning, multi-DJ company, Amoré DJ Entertainment (www.amoredjentertainment.com), he has accumulated extensive entertainment experience including training in audio production, sound engineering, lighting and design, improv comedy, voice over artistry, magic, and much more.

Have you ever thought about what clients, guests, venues and vendors think about DJs who stream music at events? What about how this reflects on you as a "professional" DJ? How about the industry as a whole? I have. I've also interviewed tons of people. • "I can't believe the DJ doesn't take the time to actually prepare in advance. Instead, he relies on a 'build it on the fly anything goes' attitude and hopes it plays." (prospective bride who's friend had a DJ that streamed music) • "This tells me that the DJ doesn't want to invest in
MO BI LE BE AT.COM ▷ A P R IL 2018
their business, equipment or music. If the DJ can't even do that, where else are they cutting corners?" (prospective groom) • "He can't even get important songs right! He kept trying to play the father-daughter song, and had to do it four times." (a guest from another wedding who's niece got married) • "Why should I pay for a DJ when he's playing the same music I can get off YouTube or my Pandora account on my own?" (bride inquiry) • “It sounded so bad. It was jumbled and hard to understand any of the lyrics.” (family after a wedding they attended the week before) • "Music is free. He isn’t paying for the music, but hey, I'm not charging $1,500 to $2,000 either and then calling myself a 'professional' (air quotes). Hiring a DJ is worth about $400 to me. Just set up equipment, play the music I say, and make an occasional announcement. That's it." (prospective bride at a bridal show) On the flip side... • "It's cool he can play any song my guests request." Yes, those comments basically summarize pages of responses to the public. NEWSFLASH: DJs are subject to the quality of the stream, available bandwidth and version of the song they can find when they need it. If the venue's wifi doesn't work reliably or is overloaded, then songs buffer, stutter, stop, or skip ahead. Add in the fact that DJs frequently pull songs off of YouTube or a public source on the fly that are riddled with poor quality, bad language or inappropriate content because they weren’t previewed. To put it bluntly: The perception of a successful event is also based on the quality of the music and how it is consumed. Not only have I asked multiple guests and clients about their thoughts on DJs who stream music, but this prompted me to start asking other wedding professionals (especially venues) about what they think. I ended up with pages and pages of notes, with repeated comments like: • "Oh, the DJ we had last night was playing off his phone for the grand entrance, and he started to get texts or a call. That was really bad!" • "During the first dance (or father-daughter dance) his music was buffering, and kept starting and stopping to the point we had to move the time line around and try it again later." (heard this comment multiple times) • "The DJ's cocktail and dinner set was right off Spotify. It even had the commercials." (heard this one at least 50 percent of the time) • "DJs don't seem to care how this reflects on us (as the venue). DJs don’t really think about what this says to guests. Seriously! Haven’t you guys thought of this? It’s like serving a perfect, made-to-order steak on a flimsy paper plate with a cheap plastic fork in a 5-star restaurant, and then expecting to be paid for the 5-star experience. DJs don’t get it." • "DJs come in, demand our wifi password, then blame us and our wifi when it doesn’t play right. A lot of DJs make us look bad because they aren't prepared.”
FOR THE RECORD In case it’s not clear to some readers, this article is focusing on DJs’ streaming of low-quality music from YouTube videos, and directly from Spotify and other streaming services, especially without consideration of the quality of their wifi connection and other professional issues. While the legal issues are still being worked out (as evidenced by last year’s removal of Spotify integration from Virtual DJ, while Algoriddim’s djay app continues to offer this integration as a key feature) many DJs have successfully included streaming in their toolboxes to provide what clients/audiences want; these DJs are not the target of Matt’s investigation. Look for additional questions in the next State of the DJ Industry survey designed to clarify the difference between these approaches to music streaming for DJs. ~Ed
ensure: • IT BETTER WORK! • IT BETTER BE RIGHT! • IT BETTER BE HIGH QUALITY! If you can’t guarantee these basics, then don’t stream; especially for key events at weddings! Don’t take the risk of a major ding to your business with bad reviews. Don’t risk a hit on your reputation, or to the industry as a whole. The fact is, the client expects so much more at their event beyond what they experience at home, and it’s time the industry delivers. Yes! Prospective clients are starting to ask: “Will you stream music at my event?” So, how do you answer? * https://www.mobilebeat.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/03/State_of_DJ_Industry_2017.pdf

MIDWEEK MONEY PRESENTED BY
Trivia Sales Tune-Up By Rob Johnson A possible option is to offer a discount for longer bookings. For example, if I charge $400 a night, I may offer the client a package for 10 weeks for $3,600. I am only charging $360 a night but I now have a longer booking and guaranteed money. If you are clever, you can set this up so that even when giving the reduction, you achieve the rough sales target you are hoping for. Remember, these $300-$400 bookings are MIDWEEK MONEY and likely 2 hours or less.
GO AHEAD, CROSS THE STREAMS
A
s you prepare for the summer months and likely LOTS of weddings, mid-week trivia nights should be busy and provide you with some “summer fun money.” But how to you get to “busy.” You will have to be a sales person while running your own business. So this article will look at how to upsell your trivia services, to enhance your DJ business and create that summer fun money. The keys to this are to be prepared and to learn how to close sales without making your clients to feel as if you are hard selling them!
KEY TO THE UPSELL: TIMING The first thing you really need to consider is when to up-sell. There are two ways to look at it. If the gig is going to be a one-time event like a wedding, reunion or graduation party, then the upselling would likely need to happen at the initial stage. If the gig is the start of a long-term project, then maybe delay it until you have been in the gig for a few weeks first. Once you have built a good relationship with your client, then you can suggest additional options. If you are already providing a great service it will be easier to get them to consider other options. Rob Johnson is back writing a monthly article for Mobile Beat after taking a year or so off. The main focus is to touch on “midweek money” and how you can increase your bottom line. Rob has been the Spokesperson for DigiGames for over 10 years; he has been in the entertainment business for over 25 years and full time for 17. If you have any questions, please feel free to email rob@digigames.com or call 701-710-1657.
10
You can also boost your business by bringing in more revenue streams. For example, if you are in a bar that you know has DJ or karaoke nights, try and combine trivia with them. If your trivia has been a success then try and increase your services. If you already have the karaoke or DJ business try and add trivia to an off night. The use of technology is a great way to set yourself apart from those doing the old pen and paper shows. By now, if you have been reading this column for any length of time, you will know the benefits of using technology. You need to be selling this to your venue owners. If they have only booked a standard pen and paper night, you should show them your technology. Show it off. Have videos of you using it. Have facts and figures of how the technology has helped other customers you have. Sell the benefits of an authentic TV-style game show and make sure they understand how the technology can help them to make money. Make sure they know the technology is not limited and whatever game show systems they want to use, such as wireless buzzer systems like Trivia Cubes, Trivia Pads or Extreme Bingo from DigiGames, it will all enhance their business and increase their bottom line! If your entire business model is to host trivia nights then that is what you should be selling. If 10 weeks has gone well then try and convince them to book you for another available night during the week. Suggest themed trivia nights. If they can see that you are bringing in money and making profit on one night, then you could likely convince them to try something similar another night. The sales function of your trivia hosting business is as important as all the other elements. If you combine great trivia, a great system and superb hosting you should do great. If you are not good at selling you may find yourself with not enough gigs to live the lifestyle you want. Sales is not natural to everyone and may not come easily. It can be a hard task and it takes time and practice to get it right. When you are selling yourself and your services it should be much easier. To be successful at upselling your trivia service, start with the right product and have confidence in yourself!

1978: Musical Memories OR, WHY I BECAME A DJ By Mark Evans
“I
t was 20 years ago today...” well, not really. It was 40, and it wasn’t Sgt Pepper but it was Disco. The year was 1978 and I was in my junior year in high school. Saturday Night Fever had just been released at the end of 1977 and the movie had just hit local theaters. Disco clubs were popping up all over, and then locally, with several K of C, VFW and other halls being turned into teen discos. Every Friday night we headed down to the hall to dance the night away. But 1978 was also about rock & roll. Some of the biggest artists of the rock era, including several Rock & Roll Hall of Famers, released their debut albums that year. Add to that 1978’s offerings of jazz, Punk Rock, New Wave, R&B, Country, movie soundtracks and, well, you get the picture. The year started with the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack hitting #1 on the Billboard charts and stayed there until July. In thinking about writing this piece I thought I would keep it more DJ related and add a few personal thoughts about the music. SNF made disco a craze and everyone knew the songs, but there was also a lot of backlash to Disco from hard core rockers. Putting that aside, it’s importance is clear, since the songs on that soundtrack are still being played at our events today. “Stayin’ Alive,” “Night Fever,” “Boogie Shoes” (how many samples of that song have been done?) and “Disco Inferno” still bring people out to the dance floor. Also starting the year were albums from Warren Zevon (I can still hear people walking in the hallway howling along with “Werewolves of London”): and Gerry Rafferty with “City to City” “Baker Street,” with its wailing saxophone, was heard everywhere. Two weeks later, we started hearing
12
a new rock sound, from a guitarist like noone had ever heard before. “You Really Got Me” by Van Halen impacted the rock world and beyond. Their debut album happened on February 10, 1978 and led directly to the big hair bands of the 80s. Yet, at that same time, The Village People released “Macho Man,” and a few months later would release the mega hit “Y.M.C.A.” Of course we all thought it wasn’t that great until we saw them perform on TV and learned the moves. That spring saw the debut of Prince and his 1st solo album For You. It was just a start but we all know what that led to. Robert Palmer had a hit with “Everyday People” and Andy Gibb released Shadow Dancing, which producd several hits, including the title track, “Everlasting Love” and “(Our Love) Don’t Throw It All Away. “ On that same day another soundtrack hit the stands from the movie FM. Ok, not a great movie (let’s face it, it was pretty bad) but the music was phenomenal. Steely Dan performed the title track and artists like Boston, the Eagles, Foreigner, Bob Seger and so many others had featured hits on the album. Not a lot of new material but really a best of 1977’s music all rolled into a double album. The significance of the album and movie was that it was the time hen radio was moving from AM to FM, touting a much cleaner sound, hence the Steely Dan lyrics, “No static at all.” And then Grease was the word. The album was released April 14, 1978, two months before the movie. By the summer of 1978 multiple songs from the hit movie and soundtrack were filling the airwaves. “Grease,” “Summer Nights,” “You’re The One That I Want,” and “Greased Lighting” MO BI LE BE AT.COM ▷ A P R IL 2018
were being played everywhere. It was about that time I started to realize how music follows circular, 20-25-year trends. 50s music was hot again. Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley and Sha-Na-Na were big shows on TV. (Jumping ahead, in the 80s, Motown celebrated its 25th anniversary and music from the 60s was hot again.) But wait, 1978 DID feature Sgt. Peppers Lonely Heart Club Band. About a month later, this movie soundtrack with remakes of the Beatles’ classic hit the market. New versions of old songs included Aerosmith’s “Come Together” and the title track by the red hot Bee Gees, along with several other songs they did. Peter Frampton, Billy Preston and Alice Cooper were all featured, but one of the biggest hits from the soundtrack goes to the very hot (pun intended) Earth, Wind & Fire performing “Got To Get You Into My Life.” A very jazzy, soulful R&B version that had dance floors filled. So much more great music came to us that year: The Cars, The Police, and Dire Straits with debut albums, Bob Seger‘s Stranger in Town (featuring “Old Time Rock & Roll”), Chacka Kahn‘s “I’m Every Woman,” the Commodores, the Rolling Stones’“Miss You,” Donna Summer Live and many more. Toward the end of 1978 Al Stewert released Time Passages and the title track sums up this article. Sometimes our minds go drifting down passageways in time, and years falling into the fading light. Sometimes I can’t believe that my favorite year in music happened 40 years ago. By the end of that year, I had started hanging with DJs, and by the next year I was spinning on my own in 1979. “Time keeps on slipping...”

djay Pro 2: More Powerful Features By Mark Evans
A
lgoriddim’s award-winning flagship app, djay Pro, has gotten a major update, and there’s a lot to love about djay Pro 2 for Mac. I’ve been using djay for iPad for several years and it’s a fantastic program, especially for ceremonies, car shows, bridal shows and so forth. djay Pro is also available on Windows and Android, and even for Apple Watch at a surprisingly affordable price. This review will go over the new features that were added to djay Pro 2 for Mac. First and foremost, the learning curve on the program is amazing fast and easy. Everything is laid out beautifully and looks amazing. The interface is cleaner and has higher resolution waveforms for more precise visual cues and an unprecedented level of detail and clarity.
One of the biggest upgrades is the Automix AI. This new feature learns from human DJs by intelligently identifying the optimum outro of a song and calculates the prime fade, parameters and EQ for a seamless transition. This only works in single player mode and I had a chance to really test this out. For example, when transitioning from one 120-BPM song to another 120-BPM song it works flawlessly, which it obviously should. But what about going from 139 BPM to 110 BPM? Surprisingly it did pretty well, although it would sometimes pick a section a full 30 seconds into the song. While it’s not perfect, many DJs will really appreciate the simplicity of this feature. Using the automix feature with two decks is still impressive. Songs start out with the synced tempo and quickly go back to their original tempo for a very smooth transition. Here I was able to pick a spot 34
manually where I wanted the mix to start. Also in the settings you can choose how you want the mix, fade, EQ, filter, echo, brake and reverse. The next thing are I concentrated on was the new Track Filtering feature. Once you load a song you will see it very quickly analyze the song for BMP and key. I put this through a very rigorous test and found, for the most part, that the BPMs were very accurate, by going online and checking them against common listings. For example, djay had “Footloose” at 87 BPM, while most sites had it at 88. Songs that had a very consistent beat were very much spot on. The key readings are also pretty accurate. I ran quite a few songs through the analyzer and found almost all to be spot on. What’s most awesome about this feature is that now you can filter all songs by BPM and key to create some really amazing mixes. Working with iTunes playlist has been my preferred way of making playlist say for weddings or using Mobile Beat’s Top 200. Until now, you couldn’t make a playlist in djay. This is another new and very welcome feature that will let you make playlists on the fly inside the program. Along with this new feature you can now create a playlist from multiple sources such as iTunes, Spotify and and your file system, and it now has a split screen mode to view your songs side by side. With djay, you could previously load in videos, but now they have added the new PhotoBeat, which allows you to simply drag an album of photos into the viewer and the program will automatically mix the photos to the music that is playing. Now this is pretty slick. You load photos or albums into the photo app then go to the video section in the app and click on photos. Select an album, all photos or individual photos and drag them to the video window and hit play. The default speed was way too fast, so I set it to 4 beats, which
is the longest duration available. So the faster the song the faster the photos change. The overall effect is very cool. djay Pro 2 for Mac also added a few features including a new audio engine that offers low latency, better sound and accuracy with track analysis. It offers 3 effects per track, saved loops, 8 hot cues with custom names and colors and a list of new controllers the app will work with. It also takes advantage of the new MacBook Pro touch bar. These are just highlights of the full range of new features. For a complete list be sure to go to algoriddim.com/djaypro-mac. Be sure to download the free demo, and if you like it it’s only $49.99 for thefull version, a steal in todays market.
