The Frances Richards Aldridge Danley Maestro dell’ Opera Conducter’s Chair

Frances Richards Aldridge Danley developed her love for Opera at the early age of six when her mother, Frances Norquist Aldridge, took her backstage to work with props for Mobile Opera performances. This introduction spurred a life-long passion for ensuring that our community was able to enjoy a world-class opera experience. Fran served the Mobile Opera Guild (Mobile Opera’s auxiliary organization) in many key roles including, committees for the Madame Rose Scholarship Competition, Transportation, Long Range Planning, Nominating, and Advisory Committee. She served as Corresponding Secretary, President-Elect and in 1997, President of the Guild. Despite all of her many roles, Fran most fondly recalls the 30 years of working props backstage for numerous performances. We are grateful for her service and proud to name the conductor’s chair in her honor.

Fury and Pathos: Seductive Women in Opera featuring

SUZANNE MARIE LOMMLER Mezzo-soprano,Suzanne Lommler’s voice has been described in the Chicago Tribune as “dark and alluring” as the sorceress Melissa in Handel’s Amadigi with Haymarket Opera in Chicago: “Lommler’s ...sorceress all but burned up the stage…” This past year brought her debuts in the title roles of both Carmen for Opera Kelowna (British Columbia), and Xerxes for Haymarket Opera. Other recent engagements were with Orchestra Iowa for Bach’s Mass in B minor; Grinnell College as soloist in the Mozart Mass in C minor; the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Symphony; and the woodcut motion picture Kharmen, by Jay Bolotin. Suzanne has also sung roles with Pittsburgh Opera and the Hamburger Kammeroper (Germany). Her New York City debut was as Annio in La Clemenza di Tito, conducted by Julius Rudel. She sang in recital at the Handel House Museum (London); in Hamburg’s Opernsalon series; with the Edinburgh Quartet, Kansas City Symphony, Cincinnati May Festival, Bloomington Early Music Festival, Spoleto Festival (Italy), Cincinnati Opera, Portland Opera Repertory Theatre, Florida Grand Opera, Utah Festival Opera, Garsington Opera, the Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Ravinia Festival’s Steans Institute, and the Tanglewood Institute. Originally from Maine, she received her Master’s degree in Vocal Performance from the Manhattan School of Music and Bachelor’s degree in Vocal Performance from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music.

BERNARD MCDONALD Bernard McDonald’s upcoming and recent engagements as conductor include: Opera Kelowna, British Columbia; Opera Theater of Pittsburgh; the Pittsburgh Opera; Bay View Music Festival, Michigan; the Dutch National Opera Academy; and the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (RSAMD). His debut at the Kennedy Center in Washington, DC, was on piano, in recital with mezzosoprano Marietta Simpson and tenor John Aler. Professional training at the Merola Program of the San Francisco Opera led directly to an invitation to join the music staff of the New York City Opera. He was subsequently Head of Music and Chorus Master at the Florida Grand Opera in Miami. As Chorus Master of Glyndebourne, he worked with a host of internationally renowned conductors, including Sir Simon Rattle, Sir Charles Mackerras, and Vladimir Jurowski. He has worked with the Aspen Music Festival and School, the New National Theatre Tokyo, the Netherlands Opera, the Netherlands Radio Choir, the Indianapolis Symphonic Choir, and the Central Iowa Symphony. He has been on the faculty of the RSAMD and CCM. A native of Scotland, his studies include piano performance at the RSAMD; opera at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, London, and the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM); musicology at the University of Glasgow; and a doctorate in conducting from Indiana University. Program Notes “Crude furie degli orridi abissi” from Serse by G.F. Handel

Serse, King of Persia (portrayed by a mezzo) was planning to marry Romilda. However, Romilda (who doesn’t like Serse) manages to marry her true love Arsamene, Serse’s brother. A lot of intrigue and confusion has gone into this, including a letter purported to be from Romilda which is actually written by the princess Amastre, Serse’s jilted fiancée. The interference in his plans arouses Serse’s frustration which he explains throughly in this aria (“Rise, ye furies, from baleful abysses”).

“Nobles seigneurs, salut!” from The Huguenots by G. Meyerbeer

In Les Huguenots, Meyerbeer depicted religious fanaticism and sectarianism causing bloody civil division. In this scene, the page to Queen Marguerite, Urbain, arrives in the company of the Catholics to give Raoul an anonymous letter, saying that the noble lady that gave the message to him has finally chosen a love. Queen Marguerite hopes to bring the Catholics and Protestants together by a marriage of prominent members of each party but the scheme fails. (“I salute you, noble sirs”).

Intermezzo in A Major by J. Brahms

The second of The Six Pieces for Piano, Op. 118, some of the most beloved compositions of Brahms’ piano works. It was completed in 1893 and dedicated to Clara Schumann. While an intermezzo is typically an instrumental piece separating two Acts or Scenes of a larger work, this intermezzo earns its name from its contemplative nature. It would be easy to picture it in between the Acts of an opera.

“Ch’io mi scordi di te? ...Non temer, amato bene.” by W.A. Mozart

A concert aria, written for Nancy Storace, probably for her farewell concert from Vienna on 23 February 1787 at the Theater am Kärntnertor. Mozart himself very likely played the obbligato piano part as he recorded in his diary on December 27, 1786: “for Mlle Storace and me”. He performed it again with Josepha Duschek on 12 May 1789 in the Gewandhaus in Leipzig. (“Will you forget me... Fear not my love”).

The Intermezzo from Cavalleria rusticana by Mascagni

This is one of the most recognizable operatic pieces without words. It occurs in roughly the middle of the one-Act opera and while it does not specifically advance the plot, it sets the stage for the tragic encounter to follow. The 1930s and 1940s radio show, Symphony of the Rockies, used it as a theme song, broadcasting to NBC affiliates over radio station KOA in Denver to make it a familiar tune to Americans.

Habanera from Carmen by G. Bizet

“L’amour est un oiseau rebelle” (“Love is a rebellious bird”). There is hardly a more recognizable operatic aria than Carmen’s first Act teasing about the nature of love. From one translation: “A heart in love is quickly burned. It knows no law except its own desire. If I should love you and you spurn me, I’m warning you - you play with fire!

Séguedille from Carmen by G. Bizet

This is the name of a traditional dance (“Sequence”) that is the basis for Carmen’s aria in Act I in which the gypsy heroine seduces her would-be jailor, the soldier Don José, into setting her free. He has to take her place in jail and while he does meet up with Carmen later, the relationship is not a happy one.

“Qui d’amor”from Ariodante by G.F. Handel

Princess Ginevra is to marry Prince Ariodante (a pants role). She rejects the Duke of Albany who accuses her of being unfaithful. Ariodante attempts suicide and Ginevra is condemned but saved by a duel that mortally wounds the Duke, who confesses the false plot, reuniting the lovers. Here Ariodante sings of how all nature speaks to him of love.

“Dopo Notte” from Ariodante by G.F. Handel

The duel is under way and a new champion appears. He is Ariodante who declares Ginevra innocent. Dalinda admits her part in the plot and news arrives corroborating the scheme. The King pardons Dalinda and goes to find his daughter. Ariodante jubilantly hails a new bright day dawning after the oppressive darkness .
