Knock and Break Wear Sensors Mobiletron have recently launched ranges of knock and break wear sensors. Almost 100 new parts cover over 5000 vehicle applications. Knock Sensors A knock sensors primary function is to ensure that you’re getting as much power and fuel economy as is possible from your engine. It does this by detecting incorrect detonation or pinging from the engine. A knock is when engine ignites the fuel and air mixture too early. This is otherwise called pre-ignition. This information is then sent to the ECU (Electronic Control Unit). Once the ECU has received this signal, the unit corrects the ignition parameters for example delaying the spark to protect the engine from possible damage. Miss detonation is due to either bad fuel, ignition problems or timing. In case of detonation the engine vibrates at a well defined frequency of usually between 5-8 KHz which is usually unique per engine. The sensor is fitted directly to the side of the engine block, usually by a threaded sensor type or with a bolt through the sensor itself. There are usually 1 sensor per 4 cylinder engines and 2 sensors for 6 and 8 cylinder engines. Knock Sensor failures The main symptom of a faulty knock sensor is drivability problems. This is usually a lack of power and some hesitation from the engine this will also increase fuel consumption. What causes knock sensors to fail? Knock sensors are very sensitive and can be easily damaged, making them instantly worthless. Corrosion from condensation is another common cause of failures. If the knock sensor fails it can seriously damage the engine, as continuous pre-ignition can cause fracture in the pistons.

INDUSTRY NEWS Diesel car sales to plunge again this year. The worst is yet to come for diesel cars which will see their sales continue to plunge, a study has warned. Aston University predicts they will account for just 15% of the UK market by 2025, down from a 50% peak.

UK car sales see first drop for six years New car sales fell for the first time in six years last year, with demand for diesel cars plunging by almost a fifth. The figure was down 5.7% from 2016, while diesel sales fell 17.1% as higher taxes and pollution fears hit demand. CO2 emissions from new cars increased for the first time in 20 years, up 0.8% on 2016. Source: BBC News
