2020
History The KIDflix Film Fest! is the longest-running kids’ film festival in Brooklyn. Presented by MoCADA since 2000, this annual, interactive program offers kids and their families access to a free, outdoor, film screening every Friday night in the month of August. The festival’s biggest highlight is its closing event, which always includes a Sing & Dance-Along presentation of The Wiz, featuring Diana Ross and Michael Jackson, and a costume contest, free popcorn, live performances, free face painting, and more. This year’s screenings, which are inspired by the theme By Any Dreams Necessary, will continue this tradition and will be presented in partnership with the African Film Festival, Inc., and the New York Council on the Arts’ Electronic Media and Film program. Due to COVID-19 and the impact on our community, this year’s KIDflix Film festival will be completely virtual (no outdoor activities).
Formerly known as The KIDflix Film Fest of Bed-Stuy!, which debuted in 2000, KIDflix was the first annual public program created by the newly founded Museum of Contemporary African Diasporan Arts (MoCADA). The Museum’s founder, Laurie Cumbo, who saw an intense need in the community of Bedford-Stuyvesant, for arts programming that both exposed children to exceptional art, and also depicted positive reflections of the African Diasporan heritage these Brooklyn neighborhoods are famous for. The KIDflix Film Fest! aims to showcase African Diasporan films of the highest quality, in order to expose children and adults to the art of film, as well as to a variety of complex and engaging stories of African Diasporan people that are sorely lacking in mainstream media. KIDflix achieves these goals by offering free, outdoor screenings in the heart of Central Brooklyn communities including Bedford-Stuyvesant and Fort Greene. In addition to film screenings, KIDflix also features live performances, face painting, and whenever possible, post-screening Q&As with the filmmakers. It is important that children not only see people who look like them on the screen, but that they also see and hear from the people behind the cameras. Over the years, The KIDflix Film Fest has introduced thousands of children and adults to exceptional films of the African Diaspora. The free, family-friendly program has screened award-winning films such as Amandla!, Brooklyn Castle, Sounder, The Trials of Muhammad Ali, and War Dance, featured internationally renowned performance groups such as Creative Outlet Dance Theater, and hosted talks with exciting emerging filmmakers such as Terence Nance (An Oversimplification of Her Beauty).

1. Gather everyday items lying around the house that you can use to make a superhero mask like an old shoe or a pair of jeans, a colored pen or marker and a ribbon or decorative string. 2. We’re going to use the pen or marker on the piece of fabric folded in half where we’re going to cut, we need to mark three places to cut: the mask shape, where you want the eye holes and a hole for the string. Use this template as a guide 3. String your yarn or ribbon through the holes to hold up your mask 4. Design your mask anyway you’d like with glitter, hand drawn art, or stickers. Make it unique to you!
