Dear friends of MOCA: What a year of milestones! Thank you for joining the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) as we celebrate our 39th anniversary and recognize this year's Legacy Awards Honorees: The Tsai Family, from Long Island, New York, whose family members Erh-Ping Tsai, Cynthia Chuang, and Sue Tsai are acclaimed for their excellence in the arts; beloved Hong Kong American actor and director Tzi Ma, whose most recent films include appearances in The Farewell, Netflix's first martial arts original series Wu Assassins, and Disney's forthcoming live-action Mulan; The Honorable Mae Yih, an Oregon State Senator and the first Chinese American elected state legislator; Jess Ting, M.D., an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery, who helped Mount Sinai establish its Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery, and philanthropist and entrepreneur Michelle Koo Hayashi, who captured Dr. Ting's journey and aided in the public understanding towards the transgender community as producer of her heart-warming documentary Born to Be. This year marks the 150th anniversary of the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad. In honor of this occasion, MOCA initiated MOCA SPIKE 150: Running Forward with Our Stories—a cross-country relay with over 1,500 runners from around the U.S. running 150,000 miles and sharing 150 stories. Through its acclaimed exhibitions and programs, MOCA continues to be one of the top 20 museums in NYC as cited by Condé Nast Traveler. This fall, MOCA has two exhibitions on view: Gathering: Collecting and Documenting Chinese American History and The Chinese Helped Build the Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America. MOCA's programs serve over 50,000 children, students, and adults, allowing them to visit and learn about Chinese American contributions to the American narrative—a history that resonates deeply with all Americans and the Chinese diaspora. museum of chinese in america (moca) The Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) engages visitors in an ongoing and historical dialogue, in which people of all backgrounds are able to see American history through a critical perspective, to reflect on their own experiences, and to make meaningful connections between the past and the present, the global and the local, themselves and others. MOCA began in 1980 as the New York Chinatown History Project, a community-based organization founded by scholar John Kuo Wei Tchen and community activist Charles Lai, to promote knowledge and understanding of the history and contributions of Chinese Americans. Today, MOCA is a national cultural anchor and a global destination. On the border of Chinatown and SoHo in New York City in its Maya Lin-designed home that was recently highlighted by Architectural Digest as one of Lin’s most memorable designs, MOCA preserves, presents and explores the diverse history, heritage and culture of people of Chinese descent in the United States through innovative exhibitions, educational initiatives, and public programs. MOCA is one of more than 44 museums and cultural institutions in the five boroughs that provides eligible IDNYC cardholders with free one-year memberships.

HONOREES GENERATIONAL LEGACY AWARD THE TSAI FAMILY Erh-Ping Tsai and Cynthia Chuang are lifelong jewelry and ceramic artists dedicated to communicating and expressing their love of nature through art. Their creative practices cross the boundaries between ceramics, metalworking, painting, sculpture, and horticulture. In 1993, ErhPing Tsai was named American Outstanding Craft Artist. They also founded Jewelry10, where they leverage their artistic and technical skills to create nature-inspired masterpieces. Erh-Ping Tsai and Cynthia Chuang met at the National Academy of Arts in Taiwan before emigrating to the U.S. to study at the Parsons School of Design. Their home in Long Island represents the significance of their everyday life and is fundamental to their artistic creation: an elaborate, curated and constantly evolving expression of appreciation and love for nature. Tracing the roots of her inspiration to her family's values, Sue Tsai, daughter of Erh-Ping and Cynthia, is an artist and designer born and raised in New York. Her striking creations of vibrant acrylic on canvas and mixed media sculptures reflect an impressive crossover of fine art, fashion, and pop culture. Her pop surrealism style has infiltrated into the music industry, creating major collaborations with stars such as Rihanna, TI, and Wale. Sue Tsai's creative talents and on-going entrepreneurial ventures have brought her partnerships with global brands in product design and curated events. In her recent debut collection of PUMA x SUE TSAI, she used her signature style to tell a story of flowers gone wild, rising up to take the planet back from humanity. 11

HONOREES LEGACY AWARD MICHELLE KOO HAYASHI AND JESS TING, M.D. A native New Yorker, Jess Ting, M.D. is an Assistant Professor of Plastic Surgery at Mount Sinai, where he completed the hospital's first gender reassignment surgery in 2016 and advanced his clinical specialty to the surgical care of the transgender and gender nonbinary community. Following Dr. Ting's groundbreaking practice, Mount Sinai established the Center for Transgender Medicine and Surgery (CTMS). Dr. Ting's team has performed more than 400 operations to date, making CTMS as one of the first programs in the United States to offer multi-specialty transgender care in one location. After receiving his undergraduate and graduate degrees from the Juilliard School of Music, Dr. Ting attended medical school at the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons. Documenting Dr. Ting's journey, philanthropist and entrepreneur Michelle Koo Hayashi has aided in the public understanding towards the transgender community as producer of her heart-warming film Born to Be. Directed by Tania Cypriano, this documentary chronicles the evolution of an uncharted medical process, alongside the emotional and physical metamorphoses of some extraordinary patients. The world premiere was held at the 57th New York Film Festival 2019. Ms. Koo Hayashi was born in Taiwan, raised in Japan, and emigrated to the U.S. in 2011. She was the CEO of a Tokyo-based real estate investment firm, and founder of an online wedding planning company in Taiwan. She has been a board member of nonprofits in Taiwan and Japan, and since relocating to the U.S., has been a board member of the Museum of Chinese in America and the China Institute.

HONOREES LEGACY AWARD TZI MA

Tzi Ma is a beloved Hong Kong American actor and director. Having started his career in New York City in 1973, Mr. Ma has an impressive number of theatre and film credits and has worked with many renowned directors and playwrights, including fellow MOCA Legacy Award recipient David Henry Hwang in his 1979 Obie Award-winning FOB and 2001 Broadway revival of Flower Drum Song. Mr. Ma's most recent films include appearances in Arrival, Meditation Park (Best Actor Nomination from the Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television), Pali Road (Jury Award, Outstanding Contribution to Diversity in Film), The Farewell, Netflix's first martial arts original series Wu Assassins, and Disney's forthcoming live-action Mulan.

HONOREES LEGACY AWARD THE HONORABLE MAE YIH, OREGON STATE SENATOR

The Honorable Mae Yih is an internationally esteemed and admired legislator who made history 43 years ago when she won a seat in the Oregon House of Representatives as the first Chinese American elected to a state legislature anywhere in the United States. As a revered public official, Ms. Yih served 26 years in the legislature after she had served on the board of two local schools for 13 years, a total of 39 years of outstanding public services. Ms. Yih's many accomplishments in the State of Oregon include introducing and helping to pass legislation that created a sister-state relationship between Oregon and Fujian province in China. She has made a significant impact in the development of U.S.-China relations for more than three decades. Her book, titled East Meets West: A Bridge to Understanding, Friendship, Trust, Peace, and Prosperity Between My Mother and Adopted Countries, shares her experiences and powerful lessons that she learned from life in China, America, and public services.

Mary HL Chen is a Managing Director and Senior Banker in the Global Families Group at J.P. Morgan. The Global Families group serves J.P. Morgan’s most sophisticated international and multi-jurisdictional clients from New York. Ms. Chen leads a team of professionals advising clients who are predominantly based in Asia on a variety of matters – including asset allocation and investment portfolio construction, capital and liquidity strategies, and wealth transfer opportunities and implementation.

GALA CO-CHAIR Patricia Pei Philanthropist

Patricia Pei joined the Board of Directors of the Museum of Chinese in America (MOCA) in June 2009. She was associated with E. V. Thaw for many years, retiring in 2018. Ms. Pei has had over thirty years’ experience in advising and helping form collections for individuals and museums. She is a collector of 18th and 19th century European drawings and watercolors, 19th century oil sketches and Contemporary Chinese ink. Ms. Pei is also currently the President and Founder of the American Friends of the Shanghai Museum and also a member of the Board of the American Friends of M+. She is also a member of The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Asian Friends), The Morgan Library and Museum (Patron) and the Asia Society, (Patron’s Circle). Ms. Pei received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Barnard College, Columbia University.

GALA CO-CHAIR MAYA LIN artist, designer and environmentalist

Maya Lin is an artist, designer and environmentalist who interprets the natural world through science, history, politics, and culture. Lin created her first work, The Vietnam Veterans Memorial, as a 21-year-old undergraduate at Yale University. The design redefined the concept of a monument and stands as one of the most powerful memorials of our time. The Memorial also reveals the elements of art that have defined Lin’s remarkable career in sculpture, earthwork, design, and architecture. Lin has created seminal art and architectural works, such as the groundbreaking four-acre earthwork for the Storm King Art Center and the 11-acre A Fold in the Field for Gibbs Farm in New Zealand. Currently, Lin is working on the new Neilson Library at Smith College, a major outdoor art installation at Princeton University, and What is Missing?, a multi-sited memorial dedicated to raising awareness about species loss and climate change. Lin’s artwork has been featured in numerous solo exhibitions at museums and galleries worldwide, with works in the permanent collections of the National Gallery of Art; The Metropolitan Museum of Art; The Museum of Modern Art; The Smithsonian Institution; The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art; and the California Academy of Sciences, among others. A member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Lin has been profiled in TIME, The New York Times Magazine and The New Yorker, among many other media outlets. The 1996 documentary about her, Maya Lin: A Strong Clear Vision, won the Academy Award for Best Documentary. In 2009, she was awarded the National Medal of Arts, the nation’s highest honor for artistic excellence. In 2016, President Barack Obama awarded Lin the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, praising her for a celebrated career in both art and architecture, and for creating a sacred place of healing in our nation’s capital.

Cindy Cheung was born to mostly Cantonese parents in Inglewood, California and grew up in the suburban cul-de-sacs of La Palma (just one palm). Her mother is a retired software engineer, her father is a retired sociologist and her brother is an architect and drummer. She attended UCLA, receiving a B.S. in Applied Mathematics with a Specialization in Computing which led naturally to her career as an actor. TV and film work includes: FBI, Blindspot, New Amsterdam, High Maintenance, Thirteen Reasons Why, Obvious Child, Mistress America and Children of Invention. On stage, she has performed Off Broadway at Playwrights Horizons, the Vineyard and the Public Theater. She holds an  MFA from A.C.T. and lives in Brooklyn with her husband, novelist Ed Lin, and their son.

CO-EMCEE ED LIN

Ed Lin is a native New Yorker of Taiwanese and Chinese descent. He is the first author to win three Asian American Literary Awards. His eighth book, the young adult novel, David Tung Can't Have a Girlfriend Until He Gets Into an Ivy League College, will be published in spring 2020. He holds degrees in Mining Engineering and Journalism from Columbia University. He lives in Brooklyn with his wife, actress Cindy Cheung, and son.

MOCA SHOWCASE P.S 124 THEATRE CLUB

P.S. 124 Theatre Club, consisting of 4th & 5th grade students in the fall (with 3rd graders joining in the spring) was formed in 2010 with the support of Freddie and Myrna Gershon from Music Theatre International and Baayork Lee from National Asian Artists Project (NAAP). The students learn from professional directors and choreographers from NAAP each year to compete at the Junior Theatre Festival (JTF) in Atlanta, GA. Their participation at JTF has garnered trophies and awards each year for Outstanding Production, Excellence in Ensemble Work, Excellence in Acting and Excellence in Dancing. This year's Theatre Club will be performing excerpts from Disney's The Lion King KIDS directed by Kyle Garvin, Hannah Balagot and Erin Young, Music Director at P.S. 124. Students include: Ken Aida, Olivia Chan, Leilani Colon, Angie Guo, Jocelyn Kung, Leah Kusactay, Ava Lam, Chloe Lam, Josephine Lee, Ashley Mui, and Angelina Lu.

MOCA SHOWCASE Gold Mountain Gold Mountain is a love story set against the backdrop of a pivotal event in America's history, the construction of the first transcontinental railroad. The original musical celebrates the striving immigrant spirit, the redemptive power of love and the ultimate nobility of self-sacrifice. Jason Ma (Writer) is the son of a paper son, and a grateful descendant of a long line of those who were able to persist, overcome, and succeed on their way to becoming Americans. He wrote book, music, and lyrics for Gold Mountain and is a recipient of the ASCAP Foundation’s Cole Porter Award for his work as a composer/lyricist, the first person of color to receive this honor. He is also an actor who has been seen on Broadway and Off-Broadway stages, in regional theaters, and many international venues.

Ali Ewoldt (Yook Mei in Gold Mountain) recently completed more than two years as Christine Daaé in The Phantom of the Opera on Broadway. Her other credits include: Cosette in Les Miserables (Broadway, National Tour), The King and I (Broadway, Tour, Lyric Opera of Chicago), Maria in West Side Story (National Tour, International Tour, PCLO, The Muny), Luisa in The Fantasticks (Off-Broadway) and Philia in A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Concert/symphony work includes Feinstein's/54 Below, Alice Tully Hall, The Town Hall, Canyon Ranch, NY Pops at Carnegie Hall, American Pops Orchestra, Houston Symphony and Boston Pops with Maestro Keith Lockhart. Ali's TV/Film credits include The Michael J. Fox Show, Yield, and the short film Mia. She has a BA in psychology from Yale University. Jonny Lee Jr. (Lit Ning in Gold Mountain) Past credits include Lit in Gold Mountain for Spike 150 and NAAP/ Prospect Theatre’s Ignite series at the Times Center, Thuy in Miss Saigon, Ito in Mame, Bobby in Company at the Oguma Playhouse, and Henry in Next to Normal. As a writer, Jonny co-wrote the music, lyrics, and book to the new musical Welcome To Shoofly which was presented at the ASCAP/Dreamworks workshop. He also co-wrote and starred in the musical web-series, City of Dreams, which has been featured in The New York Times, USA Today, Stage17.tv, Playbill, and Broadway World.

Auctioneer C. Hugh Hildesley MBE

Hugh Hildesley joined Sotheby’s in 1961 and played an integral role in Sotheby’s formative years in New York. From 1964 to 1970, Hugh was the first Head of the Old Master Paintings department in New York, going on to form Sotheby’s Appraisal Company in 1970. From 1973 to 1976, he was responsible for the Jack R Dick Sale of Sporting Paintings in London, a record-breaking sale that sparked a renewal of interest in this area of collecting. As Senior Auctioneer, he has conducted some of Sotheby’s most prestigious sales, including the Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Sale, the Sale of the Property of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor and the Barry Halper Sale of Baseball Memorabilia. Hugh trains Sotheby’s new auctioneers and conducted 60 benefit auctions in 2009, raising over $15 million for charitable purposes. He has lectured widely on the art market and is author of The Complete Guide to Buying and Selling at Auction. He is Acting Chairman of the American Associates of the Royal Academy Trust and is a Fellow of the Royal Society of the Arts. Educated at Sherborne School, Dorset, and Brasenose College, Oxford, Hugh studied Dutch and Flemish Old Master Paintings at the Rijksbureau Voor Kunsthistorische Documentatie in the Hague. 25

EXHIBITION ON VIEW

October 17, 2019 - March 22, 2020 Gathering: Collecting and Documenting Chinese American History is MOCA's Fall 2019 exhibition that tells the origin story of historical societies, museums, and organized projects that document and make public the history of Chinese throughout America. This first-of-its-kind survey exhibition is part of our year-long initiative to commemorate the contributions of Chinese railroad workers in the completion of the Transcontinental Railroad 150 years ago. The exhibition showcases the breadth, depth, and investment of organized documentation and collection of Chinese history in America. Through this project we hope to expand the dialogue, strengthen connections, and increase collaborative work among these organizations. For Gathering, MOCA will be working closely with 1882 Foundation and its 50 Objects Project, through the Tenement Museum’s Your Story, Our Story digital platform. EXHIBITION ON VIEW The Chinese Helped Build the Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America April 23, 2020 - September 13, 2020

The Chinese Helped Build the Railroad – The Railroad Helped Build America is an historical exhibition that traces the Chinese contribution to the construction of the Transcontinental Railroad. Starting in 2012, photographer Li Ju visited sites along the route of the Transcontinental Railroad. This exhibition presents historical photographs with Li’s contemporary images of significant railroad sites to resurrect these stories and honor the achievements of the laborers. The exhibition is organized by the Adrian and Monica Yeung Arima Fund, Li Ju and the Chinese Railroad Workers in North America Project at Stanford University.

Upcoming Exhibition Godzilla vs. The Art World: 1990-2001 April 23, 2020 - September 13, 2020

Godzilla vs. The Art World: 1990-2001 will examine the work of Godzilla: Asian American Art Network, which launched a generation of young artists and curators. It catalyzed a needed political and aesthetic conversation at a critical time in the histories of alternative arts, “multiculturalist” politics, and the shifting Asian diaspora. And it produced a body of exhibitions, collaborative projects, critical writing, and connections that reshaped the contours of American art. This exhibition will be the first ever to focus on the art and legacy of this seminal group. It will include key artworks from the founders, as well as members such as Tomie Arai, Skowmon Hastanan, Arlan Huang, Byron Kim, Paul Pfeiffer, Athena Robles, Lynne Yamamoto, and Zhang Hongtu. The exhibition will also feature the contextual materials like Godzilla newsletter, which printed criticism and postings by members, as well as documentation of exhibitions that the network organized.

Oregon State Senate October 28, 2019 Dear Friends at the Museum of the Chinese in America, Thank you for the opportunity to add my voice to those congratulating and thanking the Honorable Mae Yih for her extraordinary achievements and life of service in Oregon. I wish that I could join you this evening at the Museum of Chinese in America Legacy Gala in New York. I hope that you will accept this letter in my absence. Senator Yih was first elected to the Oregon House of Representatives in 1997 after serving on local school boards. In 1982, she became the first Chinese American in the nation to be elected to a state Senate and she was eventually elected to serve as Senate President Pro Tempore. Senator Yih made her mark as a fierce, principled leader demonstrating a passionate dedication to the needs of her district and constituents. Her legacy includes several landmark accomplishments including strengthening the establishment of strong sister-city relationships in China and championing the effort to preserve Oregon’s beautiful covered bridges. Even after her retirement, Senator Yih remains engaged in the community as a leader and volunteer. Senator Yih’s list of accomplishments and achievements in Oregon is long. However, the affection and esteem in which she is held by our community is what speaks most clearly to who she is as a neighbor, leader and friend. Her legacy will endure for generations, and her influence on the mid-Valley will not be matched. The Honorable Mae Yih is an Oregon treasure. Her recognition at tonight’s celebration has been earned many times over.
