FRESH STARTS!

By Shae Tsiknaris, 3X AHIA Creative Master Cutter of the Year

Welcome to my second blog for The Mocha Hair Magazine! I hope you enjoyed the last one. Can you believe we’re already well into the year? It has been very busy for me, with the usual chaos of getting the kids sorted with their school supplies. If you’re still ticking off the school list, let me recommend Officeworks they’ve been fantastic! Fun fact: New Year’s Day is an excellent (and quiet) time to shop there. Who knew?

The holidays also brought some unexpected excitement. My little poodle Maltese cross, Milo, gave us a moment we’ll never forget. Milo is 17 years old yes, I know, but he’s still a puppy at heart, despite his tiny size. One afternoon, I left some chicken schnitzels defrosting on the bench. When we got home, Milo greeted us with his usual over-the-top enthusiasm, running around in his pyjamas. But then, out of nowhere, he bolted under the bed and grabbed something, and dashed outside.

The kids started screaming, “Mum, look!” To my horror, I discovered that Milo had swiped our defrosting schnitzels! This wasn’t just a small pack this was the bulk family pack. Milo had eaten half of them and cleverly stashed the rest under the bed . At first, I was furious, but then I couldn’t help but admire his ingenuity. He looked so proud of himself, thoroughly enjoying his gourmet meal while the kids had to settle for something else that night!

Life at the Salon

The beginning of the year tends to bring a calmer pace to the salon steady yet a bit sporadic. I’ve enjoyed this time, reconnecting with my beautiful clients and making changes happen for them. A lovely surprise was seeing Elena, a friend I met at an Alfaparf cutting seminar in Melbourne last year. She visited Brisbane for a few days and trusted me with her hair. It was such a joy thank you, Elena! Another moment that stood out for me was helping a client’s sister, who is currently recovering from cancer treatment. Her hair is starting to grow back, and I gave her a short pixie style that softened her delicate features and boosted her confidence. It’s moments like these that remind me why I love this industry. Helping someone regain their confidence and seeing that smile it’s priceless. We’re so lucky to be a part of our clients’ journeys.

Fresh Starts and Changes

The beginning of the year always feels like a fresh start. Whether it’s committing to a diet (I’ve been trying to tone up for five years now still working on it!) or making a big change with their hair, this season inspires transformation. Lately, I’ve had a lot of guests request bold, short precision cuts from bobs to shaggy pixies. I love working with their natural texture and movement, often surprising them with just how much they have.

One guest, who’s been with me for four years, recently came in and said, “Right Shae, I want to go platinum blonde and pixie short.” I laughed and said, “Sure, let’s do it!” But as I moved her hair around, admiring its natural beachy waves, I suggested we keep it long for now, add texture, and brighten her colour instead. She loved it! I told her, “Enjoy this look now we can always make a change next time.” That’s the beauty of hair it’s ever evolving.

Family Milestones

This year is especially exciting for our family. Our eldest started high school at the same school Chris and I went to. It’s such a special moment to see our little star follow in our footsteps.

Award Season Buzz

As I mentioned in my last blog, award season is almost here! My mind is buzzing with ideas excited, nervous, and ready to push myself creatively once again. I thrive on trying something new, challenging myself, and staying a little unsatisfied. It’s that perfectionist streak that drives us to grow.

To everyone entering the awards, I wish you the best of luck. What will be, will be but don’t forget to enjoy the creative process along the way.

Until next time,

Shae x
