FALL 2019 Spring 2014 WELCOME TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY RECREATION TRIPS AND TOURS

SOAR is designed for active adults, age 55 and over. Each activity or trip requires a substantial amount of walking and/or physical exertion. Program participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before registering/ participating in an activity. Also, since these programs are held rain or shine, participants should plan to dress accordingly. Every efort will be made to accommodate individuals with disabilities on each trip. However, due to the historic nature and outdoor adventure components of many trips, this might not always be possible. Please call the SOAR Trip Coordinator at 240-777-4926 to discuss your individual needs/concerns. Day Trippers Ofers trips for all ages with a variety of destinations - a day trip program planned with your interests in mind. Join us for our fun, exciting trips ofered throughout each season and leave the driving to us. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. Walk the historic part of town led by a National Park Service Ranger. Hear the history of Robert Harper’s ferry service and John Brown’s raid. Ten take a guided hike to Jeferson’s Rock which Tomas Jeferson declared to be a “stupendous scene in nature”, to view the Potomac and Shenandoah Rivers crashing their way through the mountains and converging below. We are going to be entertained by Doc John, our Baltimore guide, on a tour of Port Deposit; famous for its lumber, granite and coal during the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries and, later, the Bainbridge Naval Training Center in the 20th Century. Port Deposit was the home of the famous Jacob Tome, one of Maryland’s frst self-made millionaires, as well as many other Maryland leaders. Our tour includes the homes, schools and churches of the one-half mile town along the eastern shore of the Susquehanna River known especially for the famous granite used to build many of the buildings in Baltimore and Washington. Finally, at the end of the tour we will visit the magnifcent Georgian Mansion on the secluded private estate of the late industrialist F. Donaldson Brown, Jr., President of General Motors. Donaldson Brown married a DuPont and together they built a stunning Georgian mansion, carriage house and grounds atop a rocky clif overlooking the Susquehanna River at Port Deposit. Donaldson Brown willed the estate to the University of Maryland in 1966 to be used as an educational center. We are privileged to be the guests of the estate and will have our lunch, included, overlooking the Chesapeake Bay and the Susquehanna River. 2

NEW TOUR. Take a leisurely walk through the Capitol Hill neighborhood starting with Union Station, the world’s largest building when it opened in 1907. We’ll also see the historic Columbus Circle before walking past the U.S. Capitol, Library of Congress and Supreme Court where our D.C. guide, Rick, will narrate the history and legends of these historic buildings. You may have seen them countless times, but you haven’t heard their stories. Ten we’ll duck into the neighborhood to see a War of 1812 site, a statue of Olive Risley Seward outside Seward Park and end at Eastern Market, the city’s oldest venue that still sells food with many restaurants nearby. Lunch, not included, at Eastern Market or your choice of restaurants nearby.

SAILING ON THE SULTANA, A REPRODUCED 18TH CENTURY SCHOONER, CHESTERTOWN, MD. Experience life on board as it was in the 18th century. Te Sultana is Coast Guard certifed with a professional crew. When not sailing, enjoy a guided tour of Chestertown, one of the best preserved colonial ports in America. Crab cake lunch is included.

We’ll begin the tour with costumed guides at the house/museum of Dr. Samuel Mudd, who set the broken bone of John Wilkes Booth, Lincoln’s assassin. Ten enjoy a drive through the countryside to Captain Billies restaurant for a delicious crab cake lunch, included. Ten on to Port Tobacco, colonized in 1634, where a costumed guide will share stories of that period, and we’ll walk in the footsteps of Revolutionary War leaders. We’ll fnish at Haberdeventure the colonial mansion of Tomas Stone, Maryland signer of the Declaration of Independence.

Tis year's show will feature live music by the Winfeld Parker Band. Winfeld Parker is an acclaimed singer who has performed to sold-out audiences in New York, London, Frankfort, Amsterdam, Tokyo, and the Washington, D.C. area in the last few years. Winfeld has a long history in the music business and was a singer and musician with the Temptations and Little Richard in his youth. He was recently inducted into the New York Rock ’n Roll Hall of Fame. He will headline his two-hour revue featuring his band. We hope you fnd these procedures easy to understand and follow. However, please be aware that incomplete or inaccurate registration information may delay the processing of your application, or in some cases, require us to return your application unprocessed. Fill out all of the information as accurately and as legibly as possible. All registrations that are mailed must be sent to the following address: Montgomery County Recreation, Attn: Registrar 4010 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, Md. 20902 If faxed or mailed registration forms are received prior to the frst day of registration, they will be held in a secure location and processed as frst day mail-regardless of when received. While mailed and faxed registrations will be processed as quickly as possible, walk-ins will be processed as they arrive. Full payment is required with your registration. All trips depart from and return to the Olney Manor Recreational Park, 16605 Georgia Avenue, Olney, Md. This is at the trafc light at Georgia Avenue and Emory Lane. It is accessible by both automobile and public bus. Turn onto Emory Lane, and take the second left and follow signs for Skate Park and Ballfeld #1. Unless noted, all motorcoaches are equipped with restrooms. Due to unforeseen circumstances, trip itineraries and fees may be altered. Customers will be notifed of any changes. If Montgomery County Recreation cancels a trip, changes a location or time and you cannot attend, or the program is full you will receive a full credit to your Montgomery County Recreation account or a refund. All credits will be posted to your Recreation account unless a refund is specifcally requested. All refunds will be issued to the payer in the same form (check or charge) as the payment was received. ZIP & SIP- TERRAPIN ADVENTURES, SAVAGE, MD. Trip number: 64664 Fee: $79

Saturday, September 21, 2019 Leave 10:30 a.m., Return 3:30 p.m. Join Terrapin Adventures and Te Rams Head Tavern for the special Zip & Sip event. You will glide through the forest on a 330 foot zip line. Te giant swing awaits next where you’ll ejoy 2G of exhilaration as you swing back and forth from a height of 40 feet. Afterwards, reward yourself with a beverage sampler showcasing six diferent Rams Head Tavern beers. Pick a full glass of your favorite one to enjoy. Activity level: Easy. Length: one and a half hours on the course; followed by food and drinks at Rams Head Tavern. All participants on the trip must be at least 4-feet tall, 21 years or older, and weigh between 60-275 pounds. Fee includes transportation, zip line course, giant swing, one entrée from menu at Rams Head Tavern, and beer sampler and one full glass of your choice.

“ANNIE” AT THE RIVERSIDE THEATRE Trip number: 64665 Sunday, September 29, 2019 Fee: $109 Leave: 10:15 a.m., Return: 7:15 p.m. Join us for “Annie,” starring Sally Struthers reprising her role as Miss Hannigan. Unlike most of the other children at Miss Hannigan’s orphanage, little orphan Annie believes that her parents are still alive and will one day return to claim her. So, when billionaire Oliver Warbucks ofers to adopt her, she asks him to help fnd her real mom and dad instead. Warbucks agrees, and his whopping reward for Annie’s parents attracts the attention of con artists Rooster, Lily and the wicked Miss Hannigan, who hatch a plot to kidnap Annie and take the reward. But don’t fret, this classic family musical has a happy ending for Annie, Daddy Warbucks and the whole gang. Before the show enjoy a chef-prepared three course luncheon served at your table. FALL 2019 Spring 2014 BRIDGE BUST, VETERANS MEMORIAL BRIDGE, PA. Trip number: 64666 Saturday, October 5, 2019 Fee: $59 Leave: 8 a.m., Return: 5 p.m. Te Veterans Memorial Bridge links the Columbia and Wrightsville Boroughs and it is here at the bridge that the annual Wrightsville-Columbia Bridge Bust takes place. It is only natural that a festival like Bridge Bust would pay tribute to the lifeline which helps the town and area prosper. It just so happens the tribute is a great time. Perhaps the greatest and certainly most unique aspect of Bridge Bust is its location. Trafc shuts down on the bridge for the one-day festivities. Te scenery itself is absolutely breathtaking, with crystalline water and lush autumn foliage clearly visible on both sides of the bridge. Tere are of course the shopping tents for which Bridge Bust is so well attended. Along the mile length of bridge, over 300 vendors sell arts, crafts, and antiques. Tere is something for everyone. Food vendors and live entertainment are aplenty and keep the atmosphere light. Tis is an extremely popular event drawing over twenty thousand. Crowds are to be expected. Admission cost, not included, is $2 (cash)and includes a free shuttle. Fee is for transportation only. Tis is not a rain or shine event. Saturday, October 12, 2019 Leave: 10 a.m., Return: 4 p.m. Join us for the 52nd Annual Fell’s Point Fun Festival. Fell’s Point streets will be overfowing with amazing food, artists, musicians, small businesses, family-friendly fun and more. Celebrate one of Baltimore’s best neighborhoods at a good ole’ fashioned street festival in the heart of Fells Point. Te event features two stages with live music all day, with headliner Kelly Bell Band, a kids zone with crafts and activities for our young festival-goers, café-style seating into the streets at Fells Point restaurants, tasty local delicacies, cold and refreshing beverages in an open-air festival atmosphere and craft and artisan vendors mixed with amazing brick-and-mortar boutiques and shops. Enjoy a day touring Fallingwater, the home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, America’s most famous architect. Wright designed the house for his client, the Kaufmann family. Fallingwater was built between 1936 and 1939. It instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. Te house doesn’t appear to stand on solid ground, but instead stretches out over a 30 foot waterfall. Please note: there are over 100 steps in the home on six levels. Enjoy lunch at the Fallingwater café. After your tour of the house, we will also tour Kentuck Knob. Designed on a hexagonal module, Kentuck Knob is a small, one story Usonian house. Usonian, meaning afordable for the average American, was a signature design Wright. Both dramatic and serene, the house, situated just below the crest of the hill, appears almost part of the mountain itself and stands 2,050 feet above sea level. Single mother, Doris Walker, doesn’t want her six-year-old Susan’s head flled with romantic notions. Teir neighbor, Fred Gailey, tries to woo Doris by charming Susan and taking her to see Santa Claus at Macy’s, where Doris works. Doris is not impressed, but when it turns out that Macy’s Santa may, in fact, be the real Kris Kringle, a wave of love spreads across New York City that melts even the most cynical hearts. Tis joyous, heartwarming musical is the perfect holiday treat. Running time is two hours and 20-minutes including a 15-minute intermission. Tis family friendly show is suitable for all ages.
