SOAR is designed for active adults, age 55 and over. Each activity or trip requires a substantial amount of walking and/or physical exertion. Program participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before registering/participating in an activity. Programs are held rain or shine. Participants should plan to dress accordingly. Every effort will be made to accommodate individuals with disabilities on each trip. However, due to the historic nature and outdoor adventure components of many trips, this might not always be possible. Day Trippers Offers trips for all ages with a variety of destinations - a day trip program planned with your interests in mind. New Tour. Get a glimpse into the busy life of Maryland Senator Cheryl Kagan during the legislative session. Watch as Senators debate a number of pressing policy issues. We will get a private tour of the Maryland State House, the oldest in continuous legislative use. After lunch, we’ll observe the Senate’s Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee as they hear from witnesses on various bills. Lunch is at the Capitol Building Cafeteria, not included. Founded by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the 25-acre estate features magnificent gardens. Lunch menu of salad, an assortment of sandwiches including veggie, chips, chocolate chip cookie and iced tea is included.

Be guided through the Andrew Wyeth Studio, a 19 century schoolhouse where the artist lived from 1940 until 1961 and continued to work until he died. The studio opened to the public in 2012 for the first time since his death in 2009. Andrew was known as America’s Artist because of his prodigious work for seven decades. We’ll also tour the house and studio of N.C. Wyeth, the great illustrator who died in 1945 when he and a grandchild were struck by a train. A visit to the Brandywine Museum, which houses a permanent collection of Wyeth’s works is also part of the tour. Lunch at the Brandywine River Museum restaurant is included.

Involvement of the Caisson Platoon is an honor reserved for officers of the U.S. Military who are eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. We’ll get a special behind the scenes tour at Ft. Myers that includes a presentation by a member of the U.S. Army’s elite Honor Guard and a chance to meet and pet these beautiful horses they tend. We hope you find these procedures easy to understand and follow. However, please be aware that incomplete or inaccurate registration information may delay the processing of your application, or in some cases, require us to return your application unprocessed. Fill out all of the information as accurately and as legibly as possible. All registrations that are mailed must be sent to the following address: Montgomery County Recreation, Attn: Registrar 4010 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, Md. 20902 If faxed or mailed registration forms are received prior to the first day of registration, they will be held in a secure location and processed as first day mail-regardless of when received. While mailed and faxed registrations will be processed as quickly as possible, walk-ins will be processed as they arrive. Full payment is required with your registration. Non-county residents must pay an additional $15 per person per trip. Make checks and money orders payable to ActiveMONTGOMERY. Checks and money orders must include name, address, home and work telephone numbers, driver’s license number, and participant’s full name. VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted. Registration form must include correct credit card number, expiration date, security code, authorized signature, and authorized amount. Please read the registration procedures carefully. Also note withdrawal policy as it varies from policies listed in the “Montgomery County Guide to Recreation & Parks Programs” due to the nature and financial commitments of the program. All trips depart from and return to the Olney Manor Recreational Park, 16605 Georgia Avenue, Olney, Md. This is at the traffic light at Georgia Avenue and Emory Lane. It is accessible by both automobile and public bus. Turn onto Emory Lane, and take the second left and follow signs for Skate Park and Ballfield #1. Unless noted, all motorcoaches are equipped with restrooms. Due to unforeseen circumstances, trip itineraries and fees may be altered. Customers will be notified of any changes. If Montgomery County Recreation cancels a trip, changes a location or time and you cannot attend, or the program is full you will receive a full credit to your Montgomery County Recreation account or a refund. Your written request must include the participant’s name, payer’s name, address, phone number, trip number, and reason for withdrawal. All credits will be posted to your Recreation account unless a refund is specifically requested. All refunds will be issued to the payer in the same form (check or charge) as the payment was received. Refunds will be processed within two to three weeks of receipt of your written request. *This policy varies from the one listed in the “Montgomery County Guide to Recreation and Parks”due to the nature and financial commitments of the program.

We will have a guided tour of Maymont Gardens and the estate where the grounds and gardens are like nothing else in the City of Richmond; expansive, unique, well-maintained and everchanging. Maymont’s grounds are diverse, with high bluffs, massive rock outcroppings, streams and ravines. Maymont’s spectacular Italian garden, Japanese garden and arboretum all date back to the Dooley’s (the owners) era and are highlights of any garden tour. We will tour the Romanesque-style mansion which was completed in 1893. The Dooley’s spent the next three decades filling its sumptuous interiors with treasures from around the world. After touring Maymont we will travel to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens which offers year-round spectacular gardens, dining and shopping. We will have lunch at the self-service Garden Café and Shop until the designated time of our guided tour of the gardens. It encompasses more than 40 acres and is home to a diverse collection of plants and wildlife. A classical domed conservatory is the only one of its kind in the mid-Atlantic. More than a dozen themed gardens include a healing garden, fountain garden, Asian valley and victorian garden.
