SPRING 2020 WELCOME TO MONTGOMERY COUNTY RECREATION TRIPS AND TOURS

SOAR is designed for active adults, age 55 and over. Each activity or trip requires a substantial amount of walking and/or physical exertion. Program participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before registering/participating in an activity. Programs are held rain or shine. Participants should plan to dress accordingly. Every effort will be made to accommodate individuals with disabilities on each trip. However, due to the historic nature and outdoor adventure components of many trips, this might not always be possible. Call the SOAR Trip Coordinator at 240-777-4926 to discuss your individual needs/concerns. Day Trippers Offers trips for all ages with a variety of destinations - a day trip program planned with your interests in mind. Join us for our fun, exciting trips offered throughout each season and leave the driving to us. Children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. New Tour. Get a glimpse into the busy life of Maryland Senator Cheryl Kagan during the legislative session. Watch as Senators debate a number of pressing policy issues. We will get a private tour of the Maryland State House, the oldest in continuous legislative use. After lunch, we’ll observe the Senate’s Education, Health, and Environmental Affairs Committee as they hear from witnesses on various bills. Lunch is at the Capitol Building Cafeteria, not included. Official government issued photo ID required for admittance into the State Capitol Building.

We’ll begin our day by cruising along the Potomac River and enjoying a relaxing lunch buffet, included, on the Spirit Cruise Line as we enjoy the sights of Washington with the Cherry Blossoms in bloom. The captain will narrate the many historic sites as we sail down the Potomac River. There will also be music and a DJ who will lead line dancing and play music for other types of dancing by the participants.

SPRING 2020 TOUR OF THE FAMOUS HILLWOOD MUSEUM & GARDENS, DC Trip number: 75935 Wednesday, April 15, 2020 Fee: $70 Leave: 8:45 a.m., Return: 4 p.m. An audio assisted self-guided tour of Hillwood Museum and Gardens in DC features the most comprehensive assemblage of Imperial Russian fine decorative arts outside Russia and an extensive collection of 18th century French works of art. Founded by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the 25-acre estate features magnificent gardens. Lunch menu of salad, an assortment of sandwiches including veggie, chips, chocolate chip cookie and iced tea is included.

The tour, guided by Gary Powers, Jr. will introduce you to many of the locations in and around Washington that have been associated with intelligence and counter intelligence activities. Gary will give a briefing on the Cold War and U-2 incident (his father was the downed pilot). “Bridge of Spies,� starring Tom Hanks, depicted this historic event. The tour will pass spy drops and homes of notorious players in the spy business. We will also visit the National Cryptologic Museum. Lunch at the Pentagon City Mall Food Court, not included.

Be guided through the Andrew Wyeth Studio, a 19 century schoolhouse where the artist lived from 1940 until 1961 and continued to work until he died. The studio opened to the public in 2012 for the first time since his death in 2009. Andrew was known as America’s Artist because of his prodigious work for seven decades. We’ll also tour the house and studio of N.C. Wyeth, the great illustrator who died in 1945 when he and a grandchild were struck by a train. A visit to the Brandywine Museum, which houses a permanent collection of Wyeth’s works is also part of the tour. Lunch at the Brandywine River Museum restaurant is included.

Monkeys, tigers, ostriches, zebras and many interesting creatures reside along 50 acres of zoo type settings, continuously educating and entertaining park visitors. For those who wish to get a closer look, there is a Petting Zoo filled with friendly animals. Alligators, snakes, macaws and other surprises will thrill you in the Reptiles and Exotics building. This tour will be guided by the tour director of the Harriet Tubman Museum in Cambridge, MD. We will learn about Harriet Tubman’s life and her heroic work guiding slaves to freedom on the Underground Railroad. We will visit sites that Harriet Tubman knew well and were historically significant landscapes of the Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad. We will also visit the new Harriet Tubman Visitors Center and the Harriet Tubman Museum. A delicious crab cake lunch, included, at the Canvassback Restaurant in Cambridge.

We will stroll from the back alley of Ford’s Theater where Lincoln was assassinated to the White House and many points in between for 90 minutes examining many of the sites John Wilkes Booth visited earlier that day before killing Lincoln to learn the reasons for the most famous murder in America. Guide Rick Snider is a distant relative of assassin John Wilkes Booth and co-conspirator Mary Surratt. Lunch, not included, at Hamilton’s restaurant at 15th and F Streets, NW, or any restaurant of your choice in the area.

Join historian Gary Powers, Jr. on a guided tour of the Pentagon and the “Old Guard” Caisson Platoon based at Ft. Myers next to Arlington National Cemetery. Docents will guide us on a one-hour tour through the corridors of the Pentagon. The tour dynamically highlights the respective missions of the five Armed Services. Involvement of the Caisson Platoon is an honor reserved for officers of the U.S. Military who are eligible to be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. We’ll get a special behind the scenes tour at Ft. Myers that includes a presentation by a member of the U.S. Army’s elite Honor Guard and a chance to meet and pet these beautiful horses they tend. Lunch, not included, at the Pentagon City Mall food court. Registrants will be sent security information to be filled out and returned.

We hope you find these procedures easy to understand and follow. However, please be aware that incomplete or inaccurate registration information may delay the processing of your application, or in some cases, require us to return your application unprocessed. Fill out all of the information as accurately and as legibly as possible. All registrations that are mailed must be sent to the following address: Montgomery County Recreation, Attn: Registrar 4010 Randolph Road, Silver Spring, Md. 20902 If faxed or mailed registration forms are received prior to the first day of registration, they will be held in a secure location and processed as first day mail-regardless of when received. While mailed and faxed registrations will be processed as quickly as possible, walk-ins will be processed as they arrive. Full payment is required with your registration. Non-county residents must pay an additional $15 per person per trip. Make checks and money orders payable to ActiveMONTGOMERY. Checks and money orders must include name, address, home and work telephone numbers, driver’s license number, and participant’s full name. VISA, MasterCard, American Express and Discover are accepted. Registration form must include correct credit card number, expiration date, security code, authorized signature, and authorized amount. Please read the registration procedures carefully. Also note withdrawal policy as it varies from policies listed in the “Montgomery County Guide to Recreation & Parks Programs” due to the nature and financial commitments of the program. All trips depart from and return to the Olney Manor Recreational Park, 16605 Georgia Avenue, Olney, Md. This is at the traffic light at Georgia Avenue and Emory Lane. It is accessible by both automobile and public bus. Turn onto Emory Lane, and take the second left and follow signs for Skate Park and Ballfield #1. Unless noted, all motorcoaches are equipped with restrooms. Due to unforeseen circumstances, trip itineraries and fees may be altered. Customers will be notified of any changes. Montgomery County Government is committed to complying with the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). If Montgomery County Recreation cancels a trip, changes a location or time and you cannot attend, or the program is full you will receive a full credit to your Montgomery County Recreation account or a refund. Your written request must include the participant’s name, payer’s name, address, phone number, trip number, and reason for withdrawal. All credits will be posted to your Recreation account unless a refund is specifically requested. All refunds will be issued to the payer in the same form (check or charge) as the payment was received. Refunds will be processed within two to three weeks of receipt of your written request. *This policy varies from the one listed in the “Montgomery County Guide to Recreation and Parks”due to the nature and financial commitments of the program.

The 2020 PHS Philadelphia Flower Show, inspired by the world’s exotic Mediterranean gardens, invites you to fall in love with gardening all over again. Riviera Holiday beckons you to embrace your inner romantic and create a Mediterranean inspired garden of your own. Ornate pottery and patterned tiles, a well-placed pergola and abundant clusters of scented flowers, ornamental fountains and herb parterres provide irresistible appeal along with sustainable lower maintenance, water-wise options that are both responsive to and reflective of temperate conditions. The annual Flower Show is a top destination and must experience horticultural event, attracting over 250,000 visitors annually to the Pennsylvania Convention Center, a showcase of excellence that dates to 1829. Visitors to the PHS Philadelphia Flower Show are treated to fabulous design, live entertainment, gardening how-to workshops, and lectures by experts. We will have a guided tour of Maymont Gardens and the estate where the grounds and gardens are like nothing else in the City of Richmond; expansive, unique, well-maintained and everchanging. Maymont’s grounds are diverse, with high bluffs, massive rock outcroppings, streams and ravines. Maymont’s spectacular Italian garden, Japanese garden and arboretum all date back to the Dooley’s (the owners) era and are highlights of any garden tour. We will tour the Romanesque-style mansion which was completed in 1893. The Dooley’s spent the next three decades filling its sumptuous interiors with treasures from around the world. After touring Maymont we will travel to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens which offers year-round spectacular gardens, dining and shopping. We will have lunch at the self-service Garden Café and Shop until the designated time of our guided tour of the gardens. It encompasses more than 40 acres and is home to a diverse collection of plants and wildlife. A classical domed conservatory is the only one of its kind in the mid-Atlantic. More than a dozen themed gardens include a healing garden, fountain garden, Asian valley and victorian garden.
