SOAR is designed for active adults, age 55 and over. Each activity or trip requires a substantial amount of walking and/ or physical exertion. Program participants should be in good physical condition and consult with their physician if they have any concerns before registering/participating in an activity. Also, since these programs are held rain or shine, participants should plan to dress accordingly. Every effort will be made to accommodate individuals with disabilities on each trip. However, due to the historic nature and outdoor adventure components of many trips, this might not always be possible. Please call the SOAR Trip Coordinator at 240-777-4926 to discuss your individual needs/concerns. Recreation also offers a less strenuous travel program, the new FEET (Family Entertainment and Exciting Trips) program for all ages. Individuals seeking this less strenuous travel program should review the upcoming trips listed in the “Guide to Recreation & Park Programs or contact the FEET Coordinator at 240-777-4933.

Non-County residents must pay an additional $15.00 per person per trip.

On many of our more popular trips you may see more than one date listed. You may sign up for the date you desire. However, if there are not enough registrations to meet our minimum requirements, you may be called and asked to switch to another date or placed on a waiting list. You will have the option to decline and have a credit placed in your Recreation account or request a refund. You must provide all of the information requested on the registration form. You may not list “guest as your traveling companion. If you are traveling with one or more friends, please submit a separate registration form for each of them. (Spouses can use one form). You should put all of the registration forms in the same envelope if you want to travel together. Again, partially completed registrations may go unprocessed or be delayed while we request more information, and since all trips are filled on a first-come, first-paid basis, any delays may cause you to be placed on a waiting list. THURSDAY, OCTOBER 22 Leave: 8:45 am,   Return: 4:00 pm

A NEW TOUR! Come and explore this exciting scene with our “Spies Tour” guide, Carole Bessette, a well-known and veteran Washington, DC registered tour guide. A number of areas in Washington, DC are now being publicized as “urban revival stories’” with the influx of large numbers of young professionals. A region that perhaps showed the way for these success stories is the area southeast of the U.S. Capitol known as “Barracks Row.” The oldest commercial area in the city, it flourished due to the presence of the Washington Navy Yard and the Marine Barracks, with their large numbers of workers. Time and political/social/economic changes took their toll – until an exciting revitalization began 20 years ago, and was recently fueled by the Washington Nationals new stadium. We will walk past historic homes and churches, explore the hidden alleyways, learn more of John Philip Sousa (he did more than write music), and enjoy the wide array of shops (Eastern Market) in this vibrant area! Lunch, on own, at Union Station.

SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 7 Leave 6:30 am, Return 7:30 pm

Enjoy a day exploring the well-known ‘Fallingwater’ the home designed by Frank Lloyd Wright. Fallingwater is the name of the house that is built over a waterfall. Mr. Wright, America’s most famous architect, designed the house for his clients, the Kaufmann family. Fallingwater was built between 1936 and 1939, instantly became famous, and today it is a National Historic Landmark. Why is it so famous? It’s a house that doesn’t even appear to stand on solid ground, but instead stretches out over a 30’ waterfall. It captured everyone’s imagination when it was on the cover of Time magazine in 1938. Please note: there are over 100 steps in the home on six levels. We also tour Kentuck Knob, that was designed on a hexagonal module – a small, one story Usonian house. Usonian, meaning affordable for the average American, was a signature design of Frank Lloyd Wright. Both Dramatic and serene, the house, situated just below the crest of the hill, appears almost part of the mountain itself and stands 2,050 feet above sea level. Our trip includes transportation, tour admissions of the homes, their surrounding grounds and a lunch voucher for the Café @ Fallingwater.
