Jump The Battery Put every accessory off; small or big. Put off all the lights. It is an extremely important point. Get the battery down. Remove the ground cable or negative cable first which is black in color. You can see the negative sign on the ground terminal. The power terminal will have a positive sign. Clean the terminals with a cleaning brush and a mixture of baking soda and water to neutralize the acid. Do not forget to wear a mask and eye protection to avoid any contact with acid. Remove the caps and check the water level. Add distilled water to refill it. Don’t overfill the battery. If you have a ‘maintenance free’ battery, then you can’t see the acid level. It takes around 12 hours to fully charge a battery if the voltage is below 11.85 and the charge rate is 5-amp. It takes 6 hours if the charge rate is 10-amp. The time depends on the open circuit voltage and cold cranking amp. If the battery doesn’t charge after putting it on charging for a stipulated time, then it is perhaps dead. You have to replace it with a new one.
