lorious 28 degree weather and a green freshly mown field greeted 5 teams keen to compete in the second Grass Rat race event at AAC this year. This event is flown to MAAA 2.5 cc Rat Race Rules but without the ROG requirement, although there was only one model entered that required hand launching. The models were similar Clarkson A Rat variants or Goodyears. Heats were 10 minutes and the final, normally
Mainly need the cowling parts that are around the engine. Will accept other parts also. Will consider purchase of the whole kit if separation of parts is not possible. This is to rebuild of my late Dads Tigermoth, which has seen better days. Unfortunately the Cowling and other ABS parts have suffered over the years. VALE
KENNETH YOUNG
The aero-modelling world has lost one of its oldest members, Kenneth Young, aka Ken, who passed away on the 16th October 2015. Ken was a life member of Skyhawks, a keen 92 years young, flying up until the last few months of his skyward journey. He flew model planes back when a servo cost a small fortune then progressed into full size planes, with a passion for gliding. Ken along with his son even build a full size experimental plane at home in the back shed. His yearning for modelling started again at a young 85 years, joining Skyhawks and enjoyed flying anything that would bounce and recover, unfortunately as he was perfecting his flying and enjoying the mate-ship of his club, Ken’s health went south, and could only watch is beloved planes flying. His love of anything that flew and interesting conversations will be sadly missed. 20 minutes, was reduced to 10 minutes. Whipping is allowed and for safety all pilots must wear wrist strap, so hand changing is not allowed. Every team had the opportunity to fly two heats. The day started at 9.30 marking out the circle and getting some practice in .The racing started promptly at 11 and the first two up heat saw good close racing that would be the norm for the day.The finalists agreed to a 10 min final due to the warm conditions. World Champs mechanic Mark Poshkens as pilot teamed with ace flyer Murray Wilson on the oily end were off to an almost instant start. Duncan who had been drafted in to fly for Mike Davies as team members had been doubling up, took the handle without a practice flight, and guided Mikes MVVS powered Rat model smoothly into the air. Jeff and Peter were not far behind with a refurbished Parra in a Rat model, all pilots were soon sweating it out in the heat as a whipping battle took place. Mark and Murry needed extra pit stops but with Mark’s Nelson on song and his strong arm flying style, superior airspeed and error free pit stops saw them lead throughout. Duncan put his arm to work to help the MVVS, but at the take off after the pit stop, inadvertently tripped the shut off so lost time restarting. Jeff and Peter were going well until a split
fuel line sent the Parra lean, slowing tem down and finally forcing them out 2 minutes from the end, bad lucks but that’s racing. Mark and Duncan pushed on even harder with Jeff now on the ground and at the end were only 7 laps separating the two teams. If only Bainbridge / Davies had not had an unfortunate shut off it might have been a different story! Let’s hope Mark and Murray replicate their Grass Rat success in Perth at the World Control Line Championships next May. Previous World F2C Champs Rob Fitzgerald and Mark Ellins were watching and Adelaide Aeromotive chief David Burke put in an appearance. All entrants had fun and took their models home in one piece after a great day’s racing which is always a good result. ONKAPARINGA RADIO AERO MODELLERS Scale Day at Sanderston Field
Sunday 15th November provided us with a clear blue sky and a brisk breeze - you know the sort, where everyone present waits for someone else to fly to see how they fare. ORAM played host to the Scale Society(SASOSA) for their annual Fun Fly event and all attending were treated to a freshly cut air field which was beautifully green thanks to recent rains. The Club was able to show off our Club House with its freshly painted and insulated new roof, and sliding doors giving access to tables and chairs in the BarBQ area. Some of the models which were observed were Focke Wulf 190, C 47 Transport, Focker D VIII, PC 9, Diabolo, Space Walkers, Pitts, SBach, Piper Cub and Scale Ugly stik (??) It was quite an experience for many ORAM members who are normally used to flying one at a time as a result of our small membership. Our much improved and extensive facilities should improve any new members OK, its an hour and ten minutes from the Start of the South Eastern Freeway or 50 minutes frfom Tea Tree Gully, but the drive is always interesting and in spring time with all the green fields and masses of roses is a very pleasant journey. Our retiree members fly when wind and the day are nigh perfect with Saturday/Sunday being the preferred day for the workers. Some interesting scenes and models from the days enjoyment:

HOLDFAST MODEL AERO CLUB
A
s a result of the demise of my last project (pseudo vintage model), I decided it would be prudent to build a proven design rather than risk another “home brew” effort. Trawling the internet for plane designs, as one does, I came across a kit that ticked all the boxes for me. It was a retro design from the 1970s, called “Smoothie”, which had that vintage/sporty look that I was after. It was essentially a sport aircraft intended for a 40/46 size glow engine. The kit was originally released by Balsa USA in the 1970s, and apparently because of its popularity it was re-released with a Ken Whenham’sPitts doing its thing and delighting all at number of updates to cater for modern systems. Yes, I had the field.
to have it: out with the credit card and email an order through to the US of A. Ten days later it arrived; a box of various bits of die-cut balsa, plywood, hardwood and some hardware. The box also contained two sets of instructions; the current set comprising 32 pages, and the original of 4 pages from the 1970s which was included for “entertainment”. It was interesting to compare the rather cursory original to the latest version. My intention was to power the model with an electric motor rather than a glow engine. The plans were drawn for glow power so I had to make some changes to accommodate the outrunner, speed controller and li-po battery pack, as well as allowing for enough cooling air to flow over the electrics and

All parties enjoying a beautiful BarBQ for lunch. Our grateful thanks to all who assisted in cooking, those providing salads and the ladies who set it all out and collected the cash. Finally a big thank you to all club members and the members of SASOSA who made this day the success that it was.

out the bottom of the fuselage. A bit of thinking, drawing on graph paper and the theory was sorted. Hopefully the theory will prove correct when the time comes! Surprisingly the top hatch was more than adequate to facilitate battery changes; New Rules F1D Team Trial no need to take the wing off, just undo one screw, too easy. rganising club of the Trial was Adelaide Aeromodellers. In the meantime I ordered a 46 equivalent electric motor, 70 Members were out in good numbers to assist on the amp speed controller and a couple of 4000 mAh 4S Li-Po day and the flyers were all very appreciative of their efforts. batteries. Fortunately I had a new 6 channel receiver in my Club Secretary Peter Anglberger asked early on about what sort of times to expect and I said I thought anything over 10mins would be pretty good under the new rules (higher weight and less rubber). New F1D flyer Alex Secara made a spectacular early flight under the 9m ceiling (Cat 2). His model dodged and threaded through the girders like a sparrow in a food hall. He landed with 9:19 – a big personal best. Max Newcombe put up an 8:51 and my own first flight was 9:36 – making 10mins look like a reasonable target. That is until I checked the leader board and saw that the wily Sean O’Connor had quietly recorded a very impressive 12:30. We’d noticed the Victorian floating his model over the heads of the competitor’s preparation tables where it seemed to be hanging around for a long while (cue jokes about hot air rising). Anyway, he followed this with a 10:36. So all-of-a-sudden 10mins was no longer going to be a winning score. My own parts bin, so that would be ideal; no extra cost. I thought it times were going backwards and Max also was struggling to prudent to hold off building the fuselage until the electrics were get going. Meanwhile, Mr F1L (Jack Metcalf) had started testing delivered because I needed their exact dimensions to make

sure they could fit inside the modified internals. Although the dimensions were available online, I wanted to be sure the items were as advertised and avoid unnecessary surgery once the firewall and battery tray etc. were glued in place. Just as well I waited because the advertised dimensions did not include the prop driver, which would dictate where the firewall should be placed. While waiting for the electrics to arrive I started building the wing. First task was to read the instruction manual, twice, to make sure I could identify the appropriate pieces (which were not marked). Most of the die-cut wood was easily identified, only a few items needed to be measured to make sure the correct one was to be used. Just as well I have imperial tools and rulers as the Americans are yet to convert to the metric system (if they ever will!). A couple of the parts were not quite the size specified in the manual, but that was easily resolved. Anyway, the fully symmetrical wing went together easily. I decided not to have any dihedral, preferring a straight wing. I was quite pleased with the result, no warping or banana bends, got to be happy with that. To be continued… John Jefferson

his F1D ‘Hybrid’. It looks a lot like one of his F1Ls, but with a larger wing chord and smaller motor. It’s F1D-legal, but without the rolled fuselage and built-up prop. The new rules weight of 1.4g (up from 1.2g) has allowed for a few new ideas to be trialled – and with times of 7-8mins he looked to be enjoying himself and getting a good share of the air. Alex Secara, continued to work away, also with consistent times of 7-8mins. Less than his first flight, but staying clear of the girders. Alex is originally from Romania, but has lived in Australia for many years and is very excited to find that we also fly indoor Down Under. Finally I managed a better time with an 11:53, but the next flight had no climb at all and I took it out of the air at two mins to go back and ponder about what to do with my last flight with time now running out. Sean seemed to be in two minds about going again, but

just enough to catch up to Sean, going on to land at 13:05. The F1L battle was going on in parallel. Mine was destroyed trying to get it out of the ceiling. Mr F1L worked away steadily and got the result. Well done, Jack! Thanks again to Adelaide Aeromodellers and to MASA for supporting this national event to be held here in SA. A fine perpetual trophy – the Boyd Felstead Memorial Trophy – was created by David Putterill for the event. The design is based on a Felstead F1D prop blade design. Photo credit: Stephen Kittel.
in the end he went for it and we watched on to see if he would push his advantage even further. But instead, disaster struck. His full-wound motor detached from the rear hook as he was preparing to launch and disintegrated the model in his hands. With half an hour to go I wound hard and blew up my motor – fortunately not near the model. With a second motor, higher torque, a little more pitch on the VP launch setting, and off it went. This time it climbed well – but not all the way to the ceiling and the prop was turning nice and slow. At about 11mins it was still well above the floor – and had done

Post script: Battle of the bulge One of the last tasks to do before arriving at the venue was to fill up a helium balloon at the party shop. These are used on the end of a line to steer or rescue models in trouble. I was in a bit of a hurry by now, so I had what I thought was a good-sized balloon and asked for it to be filled. The balloon guy raised his eyebrows and asked did I have a big car? Actually I don’t have a big car, but didn’t want to debate or delay any further, so I said yes, yes, of course. When I took the three-foot balloon out to the car, I realised it was going to be a close thing. But I got it in ok and was on my way. Arriving at the venue, I started to unpack, only to find
that on that warm afternoon the balloon’s contents had started to expand and the rubber had stretched… making the balloon just enough bigger to be well stuck inside. Defeated by physics once again! (Picture provided.) Luckily I had the encouragement and helpful advice of a departing group of teenage basketballers to guide me, and eventually it squeezed loose. At the end of the day, the balloon was donated to Jack’s grandkids. As Jack was struggling to squeeze it into his car, another club member said: You know I think it might fit in my car... Just then it exploded. Onlookers commented: Well, it will now…

he contest at Constellation on the 29th of November started with Vintage Glider and a steady sea breeze in the morning made flying very pleasant. The designs up to the end of 1950 are mainly of British origin, the exception being the “Thermic” design by Frank Zaic in the US. The model was flown by Dave Markwell and is a pod and boom fuselage design, the model shown in the photo (centre back) being held by Dave. It was decided to show all the models flown together in the photo and many are over 10 foot span. After World War 2 in the UK the free flight glider event had a 5 minute max and in the wind the models would travel a long distance and the larger models could be seen for a longer time. Same if if they got into a thermal, the larger could be seen at greater height and timing stipped if the model was unable to be seen.
Best performance was by Bill Btitcher flying his all red “Sunspot”, seen left, front in the photo, he obtained the only 6 minute max off the winch on the day. Bill won the event after 4 rounds flown with the writer second, flying his 104 inch span Lulu, top left in the photo. The model was built by the late Ian White about 1990 and first flown at the Waikerie Nats. The model was checked by the late John Pond from the US and I remember flying Thermal Glider at the event, against Stu Richmond from the US. Third place was Chris Britcher, to the right of his father Bill, Chris was flying an enlarged Frog Prince. In 1949, the glider rules changed to the Nordic A2 class with models about 4 feet span and 3 minute max times. The Lulu design Continued page 10

Electric Day 17th January 2016 Expecting a large turnout for the annual electric day the club has installed new wiring and charging facilities. A fireproof bench has also been provided close to the flight line so you can easily check on the charging process. This is a 240-volt service so you will need a power supply if you only use 12 volts. Switch on time is 9am and any manner of electrical propulsion is welcome and any type of aircraft may be used.
As always please be careful when arming your aircraft as we do not have microsurgery facilities on site. A BBQ lunch, coffee and cool drinks will be available. So why not come out for a day at Connie and magically convert electrons into fun.

was this size and became a very popular F/F design, as it is very easy to build. Rod Spurrier took the photo of the Vintage Gliders and also provided the BBQ lunch for the flyers. After lunch the wind was now too strong to fly Gordon Burford diesel 2.5cc event. I have included a photo of the most popular Burford model in South Australia at the present time, this being the “Crescendo” F/F by Ron Draper in the UK. The model won the FAI World Champs in 1956 for Ron and he was using an OS Max 1 glo engine of 2.49 cc, the first major contest win for a Japanese engine. This gave a great boost to the OS Company and the engines became very popular in Europe and the rest of the world. here are days when the “Model Flying Gods” shine on a club and Sunday November 29th was one of them for NMAS. It was our annual Military & Civil Scale Day and apart from a top day weather wise, we had a great group of pilots (approx. 35 from all over the state) and I believe over 60 models all up on display. Thank you to all of the participants from NMAS. Military Master this year was won by Andrew Vigar with a top scale model SE5A built from scratch. Well done Andrew. Best civil scale was won by Paul Kumela with his Wilga (Only its mother could love it Paul) which now flies very well after all of its engine teething problems. Pilots choice went to Matt Jamieson with his Eindeker which won Military Master last year and the MASA encouragement award went to Howard Wall with his well finished Piper tomahawk from the Airsail kit. Well done to all of you. Our Sponsors once again did us proud with donations for our raffle and once again we thank Super Cheap Hobbies,
raffle tickets, days like this don’t happen and we should all be thankful for that help. I know that every other club that puts on a public event such as this would agree with me here. Some of the days highlight included a superb 3D helicopter demonstration by Hamish Scott which simply defied belief. He did two demos for the crowd and I still cannot understand how anything can stand up to the antics and manoeuvres that he performed. David Traino from the Adelaide Multi rotors Pilots club spoke about and demonstrated FPV flying, and Garry & Brett Oakley did a glider tow and release. Greg Leigh flew his Turbo Prop PC21 complete with smoke which also proved very popular with the spectators. In general there was a lot of great flying done throughout the day from 10am to 3pm with only a couple of minor incidents all day. Hopefully there is room for the editor to include some of our photos from the day in this month’s magazine. For a comprehensive range of photos, go to our web site at www.nmas.info and check out the gallery. See you at the field SNOOPY

Control Line Great weather and 5 well prepared teams made for a fantastic day’s racing at the AAC Grass Rat event on November 7th. A report has been submitted to for inclusion in the December MASA newsletter. On November 29th the F1D team trial was held at the Gardens Recreation Centre. There were 5 entries in the F1D (indoor rubber power free flight duration) team trial and also 5 entries in the F1L support event. A full report has been submitted to the MASA Newsletter editor for inclusion in the December edition. The contestants have asked me to pass on their sincere thanks to MASA for the financial support in covering the cost of venue hire and the perpetual Boyd Felstead trophy presented to the winner of the team trail. I would also like to acknowledge the outstanding effort by Tim Hayward Brown in organizing this event. Tim spent many hours searching for and then securing a suitable venue plus handling all of the administrative duties required to hold the trial. On the day of the event he arrived very early to set up the processing equipment and ensure the venue was ready. He provided the score sheets and score board then acted as Contest Director. Somehow he found the time and energy to not only compete but win the F1D event and the Boyd Felstead trophy. Well done Tim! Thanks also go to the AAC volunteers who assisted with processing, time keeping and score tabulating. A number of MASA members spectated and were impressed by these amazing indoor free flight models. The venue was very well suited to this event and the day was a great success. Peter Anglberger Secretary Adelaide Aeromodellers
