Q1: Tell us about yourself, When did you start photographing? & who/what inspired you to pick up a camera? Through art I fell in love with photography, I’ve been going to art schools since I was a kid studying fine arts and through drawing I began to understand how light works. I became obsessed with the ‘chiaroscuro’ technique found in paintings during the Renaissance era but I realized that with a camera I’d have a faster and more accurate outcome. Q2: Where do you get your ideas/inspiration for editorials you shoot? Life, Social Issues, Fairy Tales, Culture, History and Pinterest. Q3: If you had a chance to shoot any model who would it be and why? Joan Smalls! We are both from the same geographic region and she has put Puerto Rico on the map in the fashion industry. Working with major publications and the world’s best known designers and brands. Not only she represents the island but as an Afro-Latina I feel like she will understand my answer to the last question... Q4: Where do you see yourself in 5 years from now ? I see myself as an Art Director of some sort. Q5: Tell us about your unique style in photography, What kind of camera do you prefer using, lighting preference? What do you look for when selecting a model for a project? I still use a 5d Mark ii, Natural Lighting all the way. Trying to break away from strobes lately. What do you look for when selecting a model for a project? I seek for imperfections! Anything that breaks away or defies society’s standards of beauty. Something different and unique that gives character to the subject. Freckles, Diastema, No eyebrows, Bushy Eyebrows, Red Heads, Afros, Dreadlocks etc. What others might consider ugly, I tend to find fascinating. Q6: For all the young photographers out there who are starting their journey into the fashion world, what advice do you have for them in getting their foot into this very competitive industry ? I am still asking myself that question actually but the only advice I can give is to always find time to create work for yourself only and no one else. Just to simply feed your creativity. Do something you care about. We are artists before anything else and the love and effort you put into something will show and others will start to notice. Social Media is a powerful tool, use it to your advantage. Q7: What was your inspiration for this editorial? A very personal one! I wanted to celebrate the beauty of curly hair, ethnicity and mixed raced models in a fantasy land of afro fairies and endless summer. But this ethereal beauty story has a deeper meaning to me. Growing up I was constantly bullied for looking different and often heard references towards my hair texture as having “pelo malo” or “bad hair”. It is a commonly used term in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean to describe those with tight curls or coarse hair. There is no such thing as bad hair! The word is used Behind every so often to the point we have somewhat become desensitized to the subject and we seem to have forgotten the hateful aspect of it. The origin of the term is racist and it is created to beIittle those editorial who have stronger African traits amongst Latin Americans. These negative comments made me there is a believe that my standards of beauty where incorrect therefore I had to try and correct them by photographer chemically straightening my hair for many years. For this reason among other social issues we behind every constantly face in today’s world, I decided to discard society’s forced ideals of beauty and embrace my hair at it’s natural state. Surprisingly, working in the fashion industry has actually inphotographer stilled confidence in me when I see models that are different and have a unique look get those jobs there is a story with top designers and walk in the best fashion shows in New York and Europe. It almost makes me think that we are moving forward. But there is still so much more to be done and we still need more models of color in the industry especially in South Florida which seems to be moving at a lower pace than the rest of the industry. You usually tend to hear: “There is no market in Miami for that.” or “There are no clients for their type of look.” Perhaps there is an issue geographically speaking that delays the process. Maybe the Latin influence who still treats racism as a “taboo” or is it simply just a residuals from our Southern past that still exist? modelstopiamagazine.com

Q1. Lia, What do you enjoy doing on your free time when you aren’t modeling ?

I love anything and everything to do with the ocean. From surfing, snorkeling, or searching for sea glass, you can always find me at the beach. I also love learning new songs on my guitar and singing. Another passion of mine is acting. My academics are a major priority to me as well. I also enjoy sports. I go running or to the soccer field whenever I can. I love being surrounded by my amazing friends and family. Q2. Lia Goodman, In my eyes one of the most adorable upcoming models, now represented by Elite Models. Do you see the modeling industry changing when it comes to height? Yes. I’ve seen that the industry doesn’t focus as much on height alone anymore. I believe that models now have a voice, and it can play a big role in their careers. Q3. How did you get discovered? who scouted you? tell us the story? I was scouted by the amazing agency director Erin Lucas and booker Susy Schwartz from Elite Models Miami through Instagram, and I met with the team right away. They’re all such incredible people, and I’m very excited to see what the future holds for me. Q4. Who is your favorite model? My favorite model is Lily Aldridge. She has achieved so much in her time, making a name for herself since the very beginning. Her beauty is timeless and Lily continuously excels in any form of work she does, both fashion and lifestyle. Q5. Are you up for a new challenge in this very competitive industry ? Yes! I’m always ready for new challenges in the industry. I believe that you can achieve anything you set your mind to as long as you’re willing to work for it. No matter what happens, you never give up and always try your best. One of the most important things to remember is to always yourself. Q6. What is your greatest strength?

My Dear Summer

My greatest strengths would be my determination and passion for the industry. My love for the camera and everyone involved is never ending. I will always strive for what I want to achieve and won’t stop until I’ve accomplished my goal.

That Mauve Mood: Tales from a Stylist

Make Your Mauve By Victoria Story

hat a beautiful, sunny day, although quiet by Wynwood standards. I arrive early to set-up my collection, greeted by photographer, Virginia Story who is staging the space. A variation on mauve will be the thread that connects each of the day’s looks. Pulling together the flow, I started with my favorite piece; the one that jump started my inspiration for the collection. A Mauve duster. Secretly I was envious of the model that would be wearing it, being too short to pull it off myself. Living vicariously through her would be satisfaction enough though. Our model, Lia Goodman, walks in. And immediately, it was all about that hair. Another reason to live vicariously. Curly, wild, and absolutely gorgeous. I’m excited that her striking beauty is going to compliment the vision for the collection perfectly. We quickly get her set up with makeup artist Nika Dernis, who runs with the Mauve theme, creating a stunning palette, accentuating Lia’s eyes and lips. She tames Lia’s hair with a front swooping braid, which comes back to its natural free state later in the shoot. Virginia clicks away, transitioning from dreamy shots of Lia flaunting vintage styles, to sporty, almost-action like imagery. We then take it outside, where the streets of Wynwood have begun to come alive. We use the grit and graffiti murals peppered throughout the streets as contrasting background to Lia’s glamorous style. A sequin jacket, tulle skirt and hair beckoning to wherever the wind calls it, becomes my favorite shot.

This summer her youth is of her advantage, she is not too young to take on commitment and a loving relationship - and not too old to consider rejecting the love that takes her over. Just as much love, the peonies bow to her grace so gently: this summer is the time of her life, time of her love... Love... Love! Young, yet not foolish but in her youth with her eyes wide open, sincere in her nudity, ready to surrender not to anything else than hearing the gentle whisper of her soul to let go of everything that would have ever hold her back from loving as deeply as she does, ecstatic in the playfulness of these maiden dreams of life that are fulfilled by the sight of her loved one: the true love. Q3. When you’re not busy modeling, what are some of your favorite activities? Spend time with friends, play sports, go to concerts and listening to music. Q4. Do you eat nutritiously ? How often do you exercise or go to the gym? What’s the secret of staying healthy? Most of my meals are homemade by my mom so she controls the ingredients and makes them as healthy as possible. When traveling I try to eat a lot of fruits and salads with lean protein like fish or chicken. During volleyball or tennis season I condition every day and during the offseason I do cardio and kick boxing. Q5. How would you describe your style? I know this might not be the right thing to say as a model but I don’t have a specific style. I change up and don’t follow a specific type. Just wear what I think looks good. Q6. Was modeling always on your radar? Or did you have other plans for your future? do you have other plans for your future? I always watched modeling shows but it wasn’t on my radar till recently. While I enjoy modeling it will most likely continue to be a side gig while I attend college. Q7. How are you able to balance school and modeling? do you see both being beneficial for your future or is modeling more of a side gig for you? Both are beneficial. Modeling can help with my work ethic while school can help me in any career including modeling.

The awareness of the world around is just the moment in that reflection of the sky, clear blue without a cloud in sight. “ L i l i a n ” I hear the chattering of voices calling my name. I’ve woke, seemingly trapped in this abandoned home. Clear windows shine a bright, June light showcasing a dirty floor, however I cannot actually see through them. Each door knob leads me cold, I have been wandering these halls for what seems like decades. Chills run down my spine knowing the chattering never stops. I don’t know how I became stuck, or for how long but, there are memories here encrypted in dust. They speak of a love, a youth that no longer exists, perhaps it never did. Each day that passes for me here I spend searching, though I fear I’ll never find my escape. I have no memory of anything upon my arrival, no recollection of my past before waking up on a cold cement floor. These walls hold me, accepting we’re both lonely. Maybe this house is all I know. Ahead of me lies a big, red door- one I have never seen before. As I reach for the handle, I’m surprised it turns. I had believed this entire house was empty, now with exceptions of this cluttered room. I find myself rummaging through a box of documents, old bills addressed to someone I do not know. A newspaper clipping on top of torn clothes dates June 3rd 1924. The paper reads “Small Town Girl Goes Missing” further details, along with the photo are scribbled over- almost with hate. I wonder what anyone would keep these horrific things for. At the bottom of the box lies a golden mirror. After clearing the dust I find myself obsessed, out of breath as I stare unashamed into beautiful emerald eyes. For the first time, I’ve been able to see them for what they are

since they were jaded with lies. Interrupted- by the sound of broken glass, I’m careful to investigate. I sneak down the stairs, it must be about dawn, as I watch a hand reach through the broken window to unlock the door. “Lilian? We found her!” I cannot see where the voice is coming from. Only a bright sun, and I am free. (c) M’Kala

Q1:What is Piscine90? Tell us more about your brand.

Piscine 90 are backpacks coming from another universe; A precious blend of art and fashion. As for my creations, I always try to find original and precious materials. I’m definitely more into quality then quantity. I have a huge respect for craftsmen and that’s why I decided to produce my pieces in a Parisian Atelier even though relocating elsewhere would make the whole process cheaper and lighter. I accept the challenge with conviction. My motto is original creations, good workmanship , while having an ethical and stylish image at an affordable price. I slip good Karma into the bags ;) Branding is also highly important to me, it’s why I surround myself with photographers that are full-fledge artists and not from fashion grounds. They bring something unique, personal and singular. You should go check out the works of Rebekka Deubner whom has been with Piscine90 since the start and Jehane Mahmoud that both help Piscine90 to bloom and twinkle. Q2: How did you come up with the name Piscine90 ? What’s the story behind the name? Piscine means pool in French. And the design of my backpacks is inspired by the bags teens from iconic 90s that we’ve all taken with us to exercise or to the swimming pool. I had a revelation one day in a hallway that was next to a coat hanger :)). I adore this name, it imposed itself on me. And it represents the brand really well: profoundness mixed with a sense of fresh sexy fun with a hint of quirkiness. Q3:Where do you get your inspiration for your designs ? I have different sources of inspirations. I love observing materials! And I adore when it merges with nature, now that is an exceptional and endless source of inspiration For example on the PVC Blue and Orange Bags one can see some 3D details on the material, such as rocks in Marseille or strange fish from Guadeloupe. The see-through transparent backpack evokes the sheer limpidity of a jellyfish and the beautiful suggested rays of sunlight reflecting in the sea. As for the Capsule collection, Rebekka Deubner suggested the idea of fabric that lightens up, It’s important to listen to your friends. Q4 : At what point did you realize that becoming a designer is a real career path? Wow that’s a tricky question. I always have a hard time with the term “designer”. I’d rather have the “young creator” label. I don’t quite feel like a designer because that’s just one facet of the work I do. I shape the brand image, realize and edit the videos for my brand... The bags and their design are only the tip of the iceberg. And if I wanted to speak about the term career, in a way that corresponds best to me; I would say that I build universes and express convictions through precious objects. Q5: Do you think you’re a atypical bag designer ? When I look at your work I see something special. I do think the term “special” applies. My career path is definitely not ordinary. I did many different things before I decided to set up the brand: literary studies, Beaux Arts, interior design, costumes for cinema and theatre. I even restored royal armchairs. I’m 30 years old by the way. For photoshoots we always choose places and people with whom we have affinities for, and who have a story to tell in their way of being; I’m very drawn to profound and special people, to certain places, certain things that are innately different. There must be a soul behind the face. I hope you sense that in my work and that I transmit something positive offbeat and sexy with a touch of humor. Q6: Do you approach thing from a conceptual point of view when you’re designing ? The concept of PISCINE 90 resides in the association of art, love and fashion. Q7:Have you always had passion for color? I just asked my mother and apparently, yes, I’ve always loved colors. Color is an incredible thing! What really gets me going is color combined with matter! Take the exact same color and put it on different types of materials and you’ll see how different it looks each time. Especially if one adds a particular type of light. The nuances of color has infinite possibilities, such a daze! I find that so interesting that it makes me almost as excited then dizzy. I probably have kept my enthusiasm from when I was a kid. In french we say « garder son âme d’enfant » which means « to keep your inner child soul ».

hereâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s nothing more to hold on to than the end of the cigarette, slowly burning till the spark lit burns the fingers and leaves them bare and naked. The smoke seduces me to look at her differently, as she was myself. What I feel for her I feel for myself: love that embraces the brazen, the weeping yet sharp edges. The blank white arouses the tones underneath, the grey smoke still twirling in the air like a calling, like a calling for an adventure, affair or a party that in its all causality lasts till the daybreak. The tones laying beyond the paper white and the black of ink vary and draw as edges, so sharp and real that her, I, am drawn in lines to keep me together. The color the world is today in the dark moon rising. Her, I, the question of me and her imposes a deep night that I feel like I would feel for it for myself, like her would encouraging the words that prove I am: me, she is: herself: she is me: me is I: I am a force, a wild drive, an unattainable passion flourishing. The jail cell bird outside the cage: free and brave, different like a melody. Unlike others, her, I am playing not being played. The sound of the cage turning me, her, I, in is like the moon dropping to the black ink and the paper white. In this quiet the bird doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t go unnoticeable: the drive is fierce, the passion and bravery of her, I, me are unheard of.
