We are very serious.

See what Klaipėda has already delivered!

LIQUEFIED NATURAL GAS TERMINAL

For more than 20 years, Lithuania has had a single supplier of natural gas and paid the highest gas price in Europe. After certain political decisions were taken, the only liquefied natural gas terminal project in the Baltic States was commissioned in Klaipėda within only two years in cooperation with South Korean and Norwegian partners. The LNG project has resulted in a drop in gas price of approximately 30%, created a gas market and turned Lithuania into a gas exporter.

NORDBALT UNDERWATER POWER LINK

Following the decommissioning of the Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant in 2009, electricity prices in Lithuania were the highest in the region, and the country turned from an electricity exporter into an energy island and importer. The NordBalt underwater power link with Sweden, which was set up in Klaipėda in 2014 and put in operation in 2015, has reduced electricity prices by 20%, connected Lithuania to the Scandinavian power market and opened up opportunities to purchase wind and hydro energy from Scandinavia thus fully embracing the infrastructure of the Kruonis Pumped Storage Plant.

FORTUM COMBINED HEAT AND POWER PLANT

In 2011, when heating prices in Lithuania increased dramatically, the construction of the first combined heat and power plant combusting household and non-dangerous waste in the country was started in Klaipėda. Finland’s Fortum invested over EUR 125 million in the project. The plant was launched two years later and now produces 40% of the heat consumed by the city. The price of heat currently paid in Klaipėda is the lowest among the other main Lithuanian cities.

KLAIPĖDA SEAPORT

Seaport is a generic term; however, in Lithuania it is often capitalised as it is the second name of Klaipėda. Klaipėda Seaport has always been Lithuania’s window to the world, and nowadays, with 58,000 direct and indirect jobs, and 6% of the national GDP, the port is the soul of the entire seacoast region, and one of the main economic engines of the country.

Continually upgraded, an ice-free port of Klaipeda is a source of inspiration to meet and cope with new challenges!

Arvydas Vaitkus, Director General of Klaipeda State Seaport

‘In terms of the cargo turnover since 2016, Klaipėda Seaport has been an absolute leader among the ports of the Baltic States. To remain competitive we need to plan today for a decade ahead. A growing and developing seaport means wider opportunities for the city, business, science, and investment, which also means new jobs, and additional revenue for the city and the State budgets’.

The FEZ currently hosts 27 companies, which have invested about EUR 600 million (85% of which is foreign direct investment), generate EUR 1 billion in revenue, employ 1 in every 20 Klaipėda residents and produce 2.5% of Lithuania’s total exports and 3% of the country’s GDP.
