Summer is over, school is in, and I look forward to some cooling trends in the weather as we escape the last few months of record-breaking heat. At this time of year, however, things at the Modesto Chamber are still heating up.
MESSAGE FROM THE CEO / CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD
This month we will be hosting our 56th Annual Harvest Luncheon on Sept. 15, and tickets are still on sale. This great event raises money for the Chamber’s Voss-Berryhill MJC Ag Scholarship Program. Kent Kushar, a technology and industry strategy expert, will be our speaker. Our annual Oktoberfest celebration is on Oct. 13, and the Disney Institute corporate training is on Nov. 1. Please look for more information on these events in this issue.

We hosted our annual State of Business & Education last month, and we had great presentations from several speakers about what is currently going on in the County when it comes to education and workforce readiness. Some of these presentations are on our website for your viewing. Finally, our Board recently commissioned a survey of our membership that focused on the value of membership, the job we are doing, and what is most important to you, our members. Thank you to those who took the time to complete it. As we do a deep dive into the results, we will be addressing our responses to this data in the coming months here in these pages. So stay tuned! | P

Improving health in the community in more ways than one By Daryn Kumar, Memorial Medical Center Chief Executive Officer Having grown up in Modesto, it is a privilege to be the CEO at Sutter Health’s Memorial Medical Center (MMC), where our notfor-profit mission is to improve the health and well-being of those in the communities we serve. Combining the expertise of our clinicians, employees and volunteers with the latest in medical technology and training, we can positively impact our community. We offer services and programs not available elsewhere, and those previously offered only in larger cities. For example:

cord injury or amputation is a tough decision; but it is critical to the patient’s overall outcome and return to their daily life. A comprehensive therapy program, like those featured at the HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Modesto, can include physical, occupational and speech-language therapies. Customized patient treatment plans are designed to help patients regain lost function of walking, talking, swallowing, and grasping large and small items. Inpatient rehabilitation also prepares patients to return to performing daily activities such as bathing, cooking and cleaning. Patients receive 24/7 care by registered nurses and frequent visits by physicians who are specialized in the area of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

WORK IN PROGRESS a series spotlighting some of our area’s most innovative and successful companies
LET THEIR FAMILY TAKE CARE OF YOURS By: Noel Daniel This fall will bring some amazing news for those looking into senior community care. El Rio Memory Care, a Koelsch Community, is making its debut at last. In fact, they’ll be having a public Grand Opening on Nov. 8 from 4 to 7 p.m. And there’s no doubt it will be a masterful addition to the area’s senior communities. “We custom design and build our communities with a distinctly residential character,” said Mary Keaton, Executive Director. “The grounds feature peaceful gardens, activity areas, a beauty and barber shop, a shady courtyard, and a walking path—all in a secured environment. Every aspect of our community has been planned to help your loved one feel comfortable and at home.” Along with excellence in care, El Rio Memory Care Community will offer full meals, vibrant mental and physical activities seven days a week, scheduled social outings on a wheelchair-accessible bus, and regular family engagement opportunities. With over half a century of experience caring for seniors, you can be certain the Koelsch family will take great care of yours. They have both Short Stay Respite and Hourly Care Programs that will allow your loved one a temporary stay during which they receive all services available. These include nutritious meals and snacks, 24 hour on-site licensed nursing and a full activities program. Short Stay Respite and Hourly Care Programs are offered seven days a week for your convenience.
“El Rio understands the importance of 24 Hour On-Site Licensed Nurses,” said Keaton. “While some communities use nursing assistants or trained-on-the-job med-techs, we have Licensed Nurses onsite 24 hours a day. Our Licensed Nurses are more qualified to distribute medications and monitor reactions, manage respiratory issues and monitor oxygen, recognize changes in conditions, make key decisions in emergency situations, monitor diabetic care: injections, glucose levels, skin care, nutrition, and podiatrist visits.” If your loved one is just in the beginning stages of Alzheimer's, Dementia, Memory Care, or needs more one-on-one care, El Rio Memory Care Community will be the perfect alternative to a skilled nursing environment. Trained professional staff and licensed nurses will be onsite 24 hours per day, 7 days a week to meet the specific needs of each person and remain committed to bringing dignity, respect and the highest standards of service to all of our 'family members'. Whether for a short respite stay or for a lifetime, our family will take care of your family. El Rio wants to ease the challenges that families who are caring for loved ones with memory loss will face. They offer in-house support groups for family-caregivers as well as facilitate strategic relationships in the community to inspire their family of residents.
